WHEN ENGINE IS UNDER LOAD WITH A FAULTY FUEL PUMP, THE ENGINE WILL STALL WHILST MOVING WITHOUT TURNING MOTOR OFF. ONLY REMEDY IS TO TURN ENGINE OFF AND ON, SINCE THE FUEL PUMP WILL NOT START ITSELF BACK ON AFTER THE STALL.
I'M 26, MOTHER OF A 9 YR & 14 MO OLD. CURRENTLY, I'M UNEMPLOYED AND I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY $2,500 TO REPAIR THE FUEL PUMP THAT AUDI INITIALLY INSTALLED IN MY CAR. I WAS SO EXCITED TO BUY THIS AUDI USED 4 YRS AGO WITH 80,000 MILES. THIS HAS BEEN THE MOST COSTLY AND THE MOST UNSAFE VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED...STALLING OUT WAS NOT FUN AND VERY SCARY. AUDI DEALERSHIPS HAVE BEEN TRAINED WELL TO DENY OWNING UP TO THE CAR'S DEFECTS. IS AUDI WAITING FOR AN ACCIDENT TO HAPPEN AND PEOPLE/CHILDREN DIE? I GUESS THE COST OF PAYING FOR THE COURT COST WHEN SOMEONE DIES IS NOT A BIG WORRY FOR THE COMPANY - PROBABLY COST MORE TO HAVE THE CARS RECALLED & SAFELY REPAIRED THAN TO PAY FOR COURT & FUNERAL COST. I'M SURE AUDI HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2003 AND REFUSE TO OWN UP TO THEIR 2003 MISTAKE FLOWING OVER TO THE 2004 MODELS. IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT AUDI WON'T "STEP UP TO THE PLATE" AND HAVE A RECALL. MAYBE THE AUDI COMPANY REALLY CAN'T REPAIR THE CAR AND THE PROBLEM WILL ALWAYS EXIST? I WOULD HOPE THEY HAVE SMART ENGINEERS THAT COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. AUDI REALLY IS COMING ACROSS AS HAVING POOR CUSTOMER CONCERNS FOR OUR SAFETY. DRIVING AT 65MPH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AND THE CAR STALLED OUT. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. POWER CAME BACK AFTER A FEW SECONDS. *TR

SAME MODEL FROM PREVIOUS YEAR RECALLED FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, BUT AUDI HAS NOT DONE SO FOR 2004 WHICH IT SHOULD DEFINITELY DO! OUR CAR HAS LESS THAN 60,000 MILES, AND THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING! ALSO HAD TO REPLACE COILS BEFORE AUDI EVENTUALLY RECALLED, BUT THEY DID NOT REFUND THE FULL. *TR

I THINK AUDI SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 AUDI A4. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 50 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED A LOUD, ABNORMAL NOISE AND PROCEEDED TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,000.
I WAS DRIVING HWY SPEED LIMIT WHILE MY AUDI A4 3.0 2004 STOPPED RUNNING ALL OF A SUDDEN AND I HAD TO PUSH MY CAR ON THE SIDE TO SAFE FROM HWY TRAFFIC. I TRIED TO RESTATE THE ENGINE BUT I COULDN'T START. I FOUND OUT MY FUEL PUMP STOP WORKING BC IT WAS SHAKING AND LOST THE POWER AND SHUTS OFF BY ITSELF. IT'S CRANKING STRONG BUT NOT GETTING ANY GAS TO START SO WHILE I WAS SITTING BY THE HWY FOR 3 HOURS I RESEARCHED AND FIND OUT THAT IT IS FUEL PUMP FAILURE AS 2003 AUDI AND IT'S SHAME THAT IT'S GENERAL PROBLEM IN AUDI'S 2004 A4 AND THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THAT PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 AUDI A4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE FURTHER BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING ON FREEWAY ENGINE STOPPED WORKING WHILE IN TRAFFIC HAD TO MAKE EMERGENCY MANEUVERS TO AVOID BEING HIT BY TRAFFIC TRAVELING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. GOT TO SIDE OF ROAD WHERE CAR WOULDN'T START TOOK TO DEALER WHICH STATED THAT A NEW FUEL PUMP WAS REQUIRED. *TR
MY AUDI A4 2004 QUATTRO 1.8L CAR RECENTLY STOPPED WORKING ONE RANDOM MORNING. THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON AT ALL. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO AND AUDI SPECIALIST WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE FUEL PUMP ON MY CAR WAS BAD AND THAT IN HIS PERSONAL OPINION I SHOULD RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM AND CONTACT AUDI CORPORATE. UPON RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THE 2003 MODEL OF MY CAR HAD A RECALL OUT FOR ITS FUEL PUMP. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET OF PEOPLE WITH THE 2004 MODEL OF THIS CAR HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL PUMP. I CONTACTED AUDI CORPORATE AND EXPLAINED MY SITUATION THEY TOLD ME THAT SINCE THE RECALL WAS ONLY FOR THE 2003 MODEL AND MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THAT THEY COULDN'T HELP ME. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS ONLY RECALLED ON THE 2003 MODEL BECAUSE THEY USED A DIFFERENT PART FOR THE 2004 MODEL. WELL IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THEY USED A DIFFERENT PART OR NOT BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMPS ARE STILL GOING WIDE SPREAD AMONG THE 2004 MODEL. AUDI NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FACT THAT THE 2004 MODEL IS HAVING THE SAME FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS AS THE 2003 MODEL AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AS WELL. AUDI TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD MAKE A NOTE OF MY COMPLAINT BUT THAT'S ALL THEY COULD DO. IM STUCK IN A SITUATION WHERE MY CAR WHICH I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR AND HAVE BEEN SAVING FOR MOST OF MY LIFE NOW DOES NOT WORK BECAUSE OF A FAULTY PART WHICH AUDI WILL TAKE NO CREDIT FOR. *TR
FUEL PUMP FAILED IN 2004 AUDI A4 3.0Q. HAD CAR FLAT BEDDED FROM ABOUT 30 MILES FROM HOME. COST OVER $500 TO REPAIR + FLATBED FEES. CAR HAD 68,000 MILES WHEN IT HAPPENED. FORTUNATELY, I WAS RIGHT AT A GAS STATION WHEN IT HAPPENED, SO I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF HIGHWAY AND OUT OF TRAFFIC SAFELY. I SEE MANY MANY STORIES ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. NOW, NEWLY INSTALLED PUMP IS BARELY 4 MONTHS OLD AND MAKING LOUD NOISES. I EXPECT THIS ONE HAS GONE BAD OR IS ABOUT TO. CAR GOES INTO SHOP IN A FEW DAYS TO INSPECT THIS. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE 405 FREEWAY AT 60MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED AND SHE HAD TO GO ACROSS 4 LANES TO GET TO THE EMERGENCY SHOULDER WITH NO POWER. OTHER CARS HAD TO BRAKE HARD TO AVOID HER SO SHE COULD MOVE OVER. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE AUDI DEALER AND THEY SAID THE FUEL PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $551. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR FUEL PUMPS ON 2003 A4 AND TOLD THEM THAT MY 2004 HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY DISAGREE AND SAID THE 2004 MODELS ARE FINE AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL REPAIRS SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE THAT THEY REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE EVEN THOUGH IT'S IDENTICAL TO THE PROBLEM OF THE 2003 MODELS BEING RECALLED. THEY OFFER NO APOLOGIES AND I'M STUCK WITH THE REPAIR BILL. *TR
TL*-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 AUDI A4 CABRIOLET. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO JERK AND STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AT THE OWNER EXPENSE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 61,000.

SEEMED TO BE FIXED, TWO WEEKS LATER ON NEW YEAR'S EVE WE WERE DRIVING TO A PARTY WHEN THE CAR STARTED MAKING NOISE AGAIN AND THEN STALLED AND ALL POWER WAS LOST. LUCKILY WE AVOIDED GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER WHO INFORMED US IT WAS A FAILED FUEL PUMP. APPARENTLY THIS HAS BEEN A MAJOR ISSUE WITH AUDI A4S, AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR 2003 FUEL PUMPS. 2004 FUEL PUMP OBVIOUSLY ALSO HAS DEFECTS AS I'VE SEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND AN INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED PREVIOUSLY. *TR
2004 AUDI A4 3.0 L QUATTRO PRODUCTION DATE OCT 3, 2003. PREMATURE FAILURE OF FUEL PUMP WHILE DRIVING, NO WARNING NO SPUTTERING. IF IT HAD HAPPENED AT A BUSY INTERSECTION IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A MVA. *TR
DRIVING ALONG AT 55MPH, CAR LOST ALL POWER. I DRIFTED TO THE SHOULDER, LUCKILY THERE WAS A WIDE SHOULDER. AFTER AN HOUR WAITING FOR A TWO TRUCK I OPENED THE FUSE BOX TO SEE IF I COULD SEE AN ISSUE. FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP FUSE WAS BLOWN. REPLACED FUSE, CAR STARTED IMMEDIATELY. THIS HAS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES. DESPITE BEING UNDER WARRANTY, DEALER SAYS THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME BECAUSE THE FAILURE DOES NOT "THROW A CODE". FOR NOW I DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH MY FAMILY IN IT FOR FEAR OF GETTING STUCK, OR WORSE, HAVING AN ACCIDENT ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN AN INTERSECTION. *TR
THIS IS DUE TO THE FAILURE OF THE VTO FUEL PUMP ON AN 04 AUDI A4 MANUFACTURED DATE OF 6/2003. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THIS PUMP DUE TO FAILURE, THIS FAILURE WAS PREMATURE AND HAZARDOUS DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE PART. I WAS LUCKY AND THE FUEL PUMP DID NOT FAIL WHILE DRIVING. THE ISSUE BEGAN ON OR AROUND JULY OF 2009 WITH A WHINING SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR, THIS WAS TRACED DOWN TO THE FUEL PUMP. UPON DEALER INSPECTION AND RESEARCH MOST PEOPLE REMEDIED THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER, THIS WAS DONE ON JULY 20TH 2009 WITH A AUDI FACTORY PART PURCHASED FROM AUDI. THIS FIXED THE SOUND ISSUE UNTIL OCTOBER OF 09. THE REPLACED FILTER WAS NOT CLOGGED CATASTROPHICALLY BUT WAS NOT AS PASSIVE AS THE NEW FILTER. IN OCTOBER THE SOUND RETURNED AND KNOWING THE FILTER HAD BEEN REPLACED I NEW IT WAS THE PUMP. ON NOVEMBER 5TH 2009 THE CAR WOULD NOT START, THE PUMP WOULD NOT PRIME. AFTER INSPECTING THE TANK AND THE PUMP THERE WAS NO DEBRIS IN THE TANK NOR IN THE SURGE TANK AROUND THE PUMP. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED MORE THAN MOST CARS WITH PREMIUM 91 GAS USED THE ENTIRE TIME I HAVE OWNED IT. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 60K MILES ON IT AND HAS HAD TWO FILTER CHANGES, ONE AT 30K AND THE OTHER AT 47K DUE TO ANOTHER ISSUE AND POSSIBLE CAUSE. BUT THREE FILTERS IN A CAR THAT HAD 60K IS RIDICULOUS FOR A VEHICLE. *TR
LOST ALL ENGINE POWER DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING. DISCOVERED BLOWN FUEL PUMP FUSE. REPLACED FUSE, ATTEMPTED TO START, IMMEDIATELY BLEW THE SECOND FUSE. CAR TOWED TO AUDI DEALER, WHO DETERMINED THE CAUSE TO BE A FAILED FUEL PUMP. THE FAILED UNIT HAD 1.1 OHMS RESISTANCE, INSTEAD OF THE SPECIFIED 28 OHMS. INSTALLED NEW FUEL PUMP. *TR
MY AUDI A4 AVANT WITH THE 3.0 ENGINE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN FUEL PUMP FAILURE WHILE IN TRAFFIC. THE EVENT WAS NOT PRECEDED WITH ANY CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA INVESTIGATION # PE08027. THE PUMP FAILURE EVENT WAS SIMILAR TO THAT DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL OF THE 2003 A4 VEHICLE. THE FUEL PUMP WAS CHANGED AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH NO MENTION OF FUEL FILTER OR OTHER COMPONENTS HAVING FAILED. *TR
