Vehicle Safety Rankings

How to Use These Rankings

These rankings are browsing tools based on raw NHTSA record counts, not adjusted defect rates. Vehicles with higher sales volumes naturally accumulate more owner-submitted complaints over time, so a high complaint count does not by itself indicate a less reliable vehicle. Similarly, a high recall count may reflect a manufacturer's proactive response to safety issues rather than a higher defect rate. The "Top Rated" column shows vehicles that received 5 out of 5 stars from NHTSA crash testing, sorted by fewest complaints — but crash test ratings only measure performance in specific lab scenarios, not overall reliability. Click any vehicle to view its full safety profile with recall details, complaint breakdowns, and year-over-year comparisons.

These rankings are derived from official NHTSA data and represent raw counts, not adjusted rates. A vehicle with more complaints may simply have higher sales volume. Safety ratings are from NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). This site is not affiliated with NHTSA.
