ENGINE MALFUNCTION. LOSS OF POWER. *TR
ON JULY 24, 2010, MY 2008 BMW 335I SEDAN EXPERIENCED AN HPFP FAILURE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEED. MY 335I (DELIVERED JULY 2008) HAS HAD LONG START CRANKS FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR. MY WASHINGTON, DC BMW DEALERSHIP HAS SAID IT CANNOT REPLACE THE HPFP UNTIL IT FAILS OR THROWS AN ELECTRONIC CODE. ON JULY 24, I WAS DRIVING APPROX 500 MILES TO A VACATION. 350 MILES INTO THE TRIP, ON I-87 AT APPROX 65MPH IN VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC, A CAR CUT INTO MY (MIDDLE) LANE. I MOVED TO THE LEFT LANE AND QUICKLY APPLIED MEDIUM THROTTLE TO KEEP UP WITH TRAFFIC. MY ENGINE STUMBLED SEVERELY AS I CHANGED LANES/ACCELERATED AND THE HALF-POWER ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR BEGAN RUNNING EXTREMELY ROUGHLY, WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND LOST SPEED RAPIDLY, IN THE LEFT LANE OF VERY CROWDED HIGHWAY. THE CAR BEHIND ME NEARLY REAR-ENDED ME. I SHUT OFF ANY ACCESSORIES (AIR CONDITIONING, STEREO, ETC.), PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN APPROX 50-55MPH ON A LONG DOWNHILL AS I MERGED OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE AND WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC. AS I PULLED OFF, THE CAR NEARED A STALL, WITH THE ENGINE IDLE JUMPING WILDLY. I TURNED THE CAR OFF. A MINUTE OR TWO AFTER TURNING IT BACK ON, THE HALF-POWER ENGINE ICON CAME ON AGAIN, ALONG WITH A SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT, AND THE ENGINE AGAIN HAD ALMOST NO POWER TO ACCELERATE AND RAN ROUGHLY. THE HPFP AND LOWER PRESSURE FUEL SENSOR WERE REPLACED BY KEELER BMW, LATHAM, NY, ON JULY 29, 2010. MY CAR HAD RECEIVED THE SOFTWARE UPDATE DURING A PAST SERVICE. I'VE KNOWN ABOUT THE HPFP PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS. BECAUSE OF THE LONG CRANKS, I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MINE TO FAIL AND HOPED IT WOULD NOT BE IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. I NOTED A RECENT ARTICLE IN WHICH A BMW SPOKESPERSON SAID THE FAILURES ARE NOT OCCURRING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. GIVEN MY EXPERIENCE, BMW NEEDS TO BE HONEST ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, IN VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC, AND FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE COME OUT WITHOUT GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE. *TR
ANOTHER HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE IN MY 2008 BMW 335I. THIS TIME IT HAPPENED WITHOUT ANY WARNING, JUST AFTER PICKING UP MY CHILDREN AT PRE-SCHOOL, I PULLED OUT ONTO A BUSY STREET WHICH IS DIFFICULT TO GET A WHOLE IN TRAFFIC. STEPPED ON THE GAS TO PULL OUT AND SPEED UP QUICKLY TO THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC (45 MPH), THE CAR STARTS TO ACCELERATE FOR ABOUT 2 SECONDS, THEN ACTS LIKE I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, GOES INTO A LIMP MODE, RPM DROP TO 4-500RPM AND THE CAR SHAKES AND RUNS ROUGH AND WILL BARELY ACCELERATE NO MATTER HOW HARD I PUSH THE GAS PEDAL. THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC HAS TO BRAKE EXTREMELY HARD TO AVOID REAR ENDING ME SINCE THERE IS NO REAL SHOULDER OR ANY TIME TO EVEN PULL OVER, THANK GOD I WAS NOT HIT AND EVERYONE ELSE IN TRAFFIC MANAGED TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY WITHOUT INCIDENT - IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY FOR THIS TO HAVE ENDED IN A 40MPH SPEED DIFFERENTIAL REAR END COLLISION WITH 2 SMALL CHILDREN IN MY CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO FEEL CONFIDENT THAT I CAN RETURN MY CAR FOR REPAIR, BUT SINCE THIS IS THE APPARENTLY REPAIRED PART ALREADY INSTALLED AND THAT EVEN THE NEW REPAIR PART THAT WILL BE PUT IN MY CAR HAS ALREADY FAILED MANY TIMES ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, I FEEL THAT BMW IS JUST PUTTING ME BACK IN POTENTIALLY THE SAME DANGEROUS POSITION TO HAPPEN AGAIN. MY FIRST FUEL PUMP FAILED AT 2000 MILES, THIS ONE FAILED AT 10000 MILES, AT THIS RATE I WILL NEED 20 FUEL PUMP REPLACEMENTS BEFORE THE 100000 MILE WARRANTY RUNS OUT AND POTENTIALLY BE IN UP TO 20 ACCIDENTS WHEN THIS HAPPENS - PLEASE REOPEN THIS CASE AND INVESTIGATE BMW FURTHER BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED! *TR
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. FAILURE STARTS OFF WITH LONG STARTS, FOLLOWED BY ROUGH IDLE FOLLOWED BY REDUCED POWER AND FAILED PUMP. HAD 4 PUMPS REPLACED. *TR
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED AFTER REPLACEMENT AND NOW THE CAR SOMETIMES STALLS AT START. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AROUND 65-70MPH, I EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. I IMMEDIATELY RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND WAS LEFT WITH 50% ENGINE POWER (LIMP MODE). LUCKILY THE DEALER WAS ONLY A COUPLE MILES AWAY, SO I IMMEDIATELY DROVE THERE FOR REPAIR, BUT HAD THIS BEEN ELSEWHERE IN THE REGION, I WOULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED. THE BMW HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED AND THE CAR HAS BEEN WORKING WELL EVER AFTER. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS INCIDENT ACCURATELY REFLECTS WHAT TYPICAL HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) FAILURES TYPICALLY PRESENT LIKE. *TR
PARKED CAR USING HAND BRAKE (STANDARD SHIFT CAR). LATER (APPROX 2 HOURS LATER) HANDBRAKE RELEASED AND CAR ROLLED INTO STREET. ON ANOTHER OCCASION, THE HANDBRAKE RELEASED 1 MINUTE AFTER I SET IT (I WAS STILL IN THE CAR AT THE TIME) AND WAS ABLE TO CATCH IT BEFORE IT ROLLED AWAY. *JS
BMW N54 ENGINE 1. SYMPTOMS BEGIN WITH INCREASING LONG-CRANKS ON START-UP. EVENTUALLY THE ENGINE PERFORMS AT REDUCED POWER, AND ULTIMATELY TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. 2. I AM ON MY 3RD HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) WITH APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES ON THE CAR IN 2 YEARS AND 2 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. APPARENTLY THE REPLACEMENT OF THE HPFP FREQUENTLY LEADS TO A PROBLEM WITH THE SPARK PLUGS, AND COILS WHICH CAUSE SEVERE MIS-FIRING AND VIOLENT SHAKING. MY COILS WERE REPLACED AS WAS A CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND AN O2 SENSOR IN BETWEEN HPFP #1 AND #2. AT TIMES THE ENGINE HAS CUT POWER WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAUSING A HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITION. 3. BMW MADE AVAILABLE A HPFP FROM A NEW MANUFACTURER (MY #2 HPFP) AND SUBSEQUENTLY DISCONTINUED THAT PART (PART # ENDING IN 943) AND REPLACED IT WITH PART # ENDING IN 933, WHICH IS A RE-MANUFACTURED HPFP (THE PUMP CURRENTLY IN MY CAR). EACH OF THE THREE PUMPS APPEARS TO BE NEARLY IDENTICAL, EACH HAS A HIGH FAILURE RATE AND NONE SEEM TO ADDRESS THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM. *TR
UPON MOUNTING NEW TIRES ON MY 2008 BMW 328I CONVERTIBLE (W/ SPORT PKG) AT BIG O TIRES IN DANVILLE, CA, THE TECHNICIANS INFORMED ME THAT BOTH OF MY REAR WHEELS WERE CRACKED, AND THEY COULD NOT MOUNT THE NEW TIRES ON THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION AT BMW OF SAN FRANCISCO, MY SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT IT WAS IN THEIR OPINION THAT AN "IMPACT" FROM A POTHOLE OR OTHER IRREGULAR ROAD SURFACE CAUSED THE CRACKS IN BOTH REAR WHEELS AND THAT WARRANTY COVERAGE IS DENIED. UPON MY OWN INVESTIGATION, I FOUND SEVERAL OTHER BMW CUSTOMERS DESCRIBE A SIMILAR CONCERN ON WWW.BIMMERFEST.COM, AS WELL AS AN INVESTIGATION PERFORMED BY THE BBC IN OCTOBER OF 2009. THE SPEEDOMETER IN THIS VEHICLE IS OFF BY 5 MPH AT 60 MPH AND PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AT HIGHER SPEEDS. BOTH THE DEALER AND BMW CORPORATION REFUSE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I HAVE REQUESTED THAT A NEW SPEEDOMETER BE INSTALLED OR THAT THE OLD UNIT BE RECALIBRATED. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SAFETY DEFECT DUE TO THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO ACCURATELY DETERMINE THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS. *TR
MULTIPLE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES ON VEHICLE STARTING AT 27,055 MILES, SECOND AT 28,711 MILES, THIRD AT 40,872 MILES. ALSO EXCESSIVE TRANSMISSION LEAK AT 35,784 MILES.(REPAIRED) SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF REPROGRAMMING SOFTWARE FAILED TO FIX THE FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEM. STILL ONGOING FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE SYMPTOMS OCCURRING AFTER RECENT DEALER SERVICE/INSPECTION. THE THIRD BREAKDOWN WAS CATASTROPHIC AND HAD TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED OFF ROADWAY. *TR
LOST ENGINE POWER DUE TO MALFUNCTIONING FUEL PUMP. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TWICE SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED IN 1/2008 - IN 4/2008 AND 5/2010. BOTH TIMES THE DEALER REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP AT NO COST. *TR
2008 BMW, ELECTRONIC DOOR LOCKS STUCK IN LOCKED POSITION, MUST OPEN DRIVER SIDE DOOR WITH VALET KEY. REMAINING DOORS STUCK IN LOCKED POSITION, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR PASSENGERS TO LEAVE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. RELATED PROBLEM IS THAT GAS CAP (WHICH LOCKS WHEN DOORS ARE LOCKED) WILL ALSO NOT OPEN. *TR
SIDEWALL SEPARATION (RIGHT FRONT) ON BRIDGESTONE SIZE 225/40R18 REO50A ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT RUN FLAT TIRE AT 20,000 MILES. THESE TIRES SEEM PRONE TO DELAMINATION. VERY POOR TREAD MILEAGE FOR HIGHWAY DRIVING. WORN OUT NOW. UTQG RATING SEEMS EXAGGERATED AS I'M NOT IN STOP-AND-GO DRIVING MODE. THESE TIRES ARE PRICED $70+ TO $90+ PER TIRE MORE THAN NON-RF TIRES AND B'STONE HAS A VIRTUAL MONOPOLY....BMW N.A. ONLY PERMITS REPLACEMENT OF THESE TIRES AND IT REALLY HITS THE POCKET BOOK. CONTACTED B'STONE CONSUMER RELATIONS AND MET A BRICK WALL AS THEY KNOW THEY HAVE YOU OVER A BARREL. WROTE THE PRES. OF BRIDGESTONE AND NOT EVEN THE COURTESY OF A RESPONSE. *TR
MY WIFE WAS ON THE FREEWAY DOING 65 MPH AND THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED, LUCKILY SHE WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO SHOULDER. TURNS OUT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP. I DID NOT KNOW THERE WERE OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM UNTIL I READ THIS ARTICLE. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. *TR
MY 2008 BMW 335I ONLY HAD AROUND 28,000 MILES WHEN I BEGAN NOTICING IT TOOK AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF TIME TO START THE ENGINE. IT WOULD CRANK FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE THE ENGINE FINALLY STARTED, ESPECIALLY IF IT WAS A COLD START. ONCE THE ENGINE WAS WARMED UP IT SEEMED TO RUN JUST FINE. IT HAS NOW BEEN IN THE SHOP 4 TIMES SINCE JAN 2010 AND I'M SICK OF IT! AM TERRIFIED ABOUT THE CAR STOPPING ON THE INTERSTATE, AMID TRAFFIC, LIKE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED IN VARIOUS OTHER POSTS! *TR
THROUGH OUT THE PAST MONTH I HAVE HAD MY CAR TOWED THREE TIMES WITH FIVE OCCURRENCES OF THE CAR NOT CRANKING AND THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN LEAVING ME STRANDED. OVER THE PAST YEAR THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS COME ON AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH FOR LESS THAN 5-10 MINUTES AT THE TIME. THE FIRST INSTANCE IT WAS TOWED BMW OF MOBILE REPLACED THE BATTERY AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF TROUBLE SHOOTING EVEN THOUGH I HAD OUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT CHECK THE BATTERY TO BE SURE THAT WAS NOT THE ISSUE. THEY CHARGED ME OVER FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THIS BATTERY. TWO DAYS AFTER THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED I HAD IT TOWED AGAIN TO BMW OF MOBILE BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT CRANK AGAIN AND THE LIGHTS ETC. WOULD COME ON. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR OVER 5 DAYS RUNNING TEST THEN STATED THAT "NOTHING WAS WRONG." I TOLD THEM THAT I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD IT TOWED IF NOTHING WAS WRONG. TWO DAYS LATER IT WOULD NOT CRANK AGAIN WHEN MY 3 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I WERE AT A LATE LOCAL HIGHSCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME. THIS TIME THEY SAID THAT IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL WIRE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE CAUSING THE PROBLEM CAUSING SOMETHING TO MELT NEAR THE FUSE PANEL($1,200) TO REPLACE). *TR

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: THE 2008 BMW 335XI I HAVE GOT ENGINE OVER HEATED WARMING SIGH POP OUT FROM CAR COMPUTER AND THE CAR LOSE THE POWER RIGHT AWAY WHILE I WAS STILL DRIVING ON THE FAST LANE ON THE FREE WAY WHICH ALMOST GOT ME IN ACCIDENT FRONT THE CAR BEHIND TWICE. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE IS ERROR RECORD SHOWING MY CAR ENGINE BEEN OVER HEATED BUT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT THAT I NEED TO CONTACT BMWNA FOR SOLUTION. I DID SOME RESEARCH ABOUT MY CAR DOES NOT COME WITH THE OIL COOLER WHICH SHOULD ORIGINAL COME INSTALL IN THE CAR SINCE THE CAR HAS SPORT PACKAGE AND BMWNA BEEN DOING RETROFIT TO MANY OTHER CARS ALREADY. I MENTION THAT WHILE BMWNA CONTACT ME BUT THEY SAID THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EVEN WITH THE CAR DID RECORD ENGINE OVER HEATED PROBLEM UNLESS I OVER HEATED THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP THEN THEY WILL CONSIDER FIXING THE PROBLEM. ALSO SINCE I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THE VEHICLE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO OD THE OIL COOLER REFROFIT FOR ME. I ASK BMWNA THEY SHOULD TAKE CARE THIS PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR IS ONLY 1 AND HALF YEAR OLD AND THE PROBLEM SHOULD BE TAKE CAR BY WARRANTY BUT THEY SAID THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX IT. THIS ALREADY HAVE SOME SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES SINCE THEY KNOW THIS CAR NEED TO BE PUTTING OIL COOLER IN ORDER NOT TO GET IT OVERHEATED AND LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING. BMWNA DID THE RETROFIT FOR FIRST OWNER BUT I GUESS THEY DO NOT CONSIDER THE LIFE OF THE SECOND AS IMPORTANT AS THE FIRST OWNER TOO. MAYBE THEY WILL STATE LOOKING AT THE ENGINE OVERHEATED PROBLEM LIKE TOYOTA WHEN SERIOUS PROBLEM START. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS CASE FOR SOME SECOND OWNER OF BMW THAT BMWNA TRYING TO IGNORE. BMW 328XI SPORTWAGON CAR POWER LOST SPORADICALLY WHILE CAR IS IN USE. 1ST TIME, CAR STOPPED AT STOP SIGN, WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PULL OFF, CAR TURNED OFF. ALL POWER LOST ONLY AVAILABLE FUNCTION - BRAKES. 2ND TIME, SAME DAY AS 1ST INCIDENT, CAR MOVING APPROX 50MPH, HIT A BUMP, ALL CAR POWER LOST. ONLY AVAILABLE FEATURE, BRAKES. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART FOR APPROX 2.5 HOURS. OCCURRED IN CONSTRUCTION ZONE, SO CAR AND DRIVER SITTING IN TRAFFIC LANE. UNSURE WHAT WAS FIXED. SUPPOSEDLY SOME PART NEAR GAS PUMP HOLE THAT LEAKED - CORROSION ON COMPUTER - REPLACED. 3RD TIME - CAR CUT OFF WHILE TRAVELING 10 MPH MAKING RIGHT HAND TURN. BRAKES WORKED ONLY. D/T LOSS OF POWER STEERING, CAR STOPPED IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE. REPLACED "FUEL/AIR INTAKE" MODULATOR? NOT SURE OF THE NAME. OLD PART WAS AT DEALERSHIP. 4TH TIME - CAR CUT OFF WHILE MAKING LEFT HAND TURN IN BUSY INTERSECTION AT APPROX 15 MPH. ENTIRE ONBOARD COMPUTER REPLACED. 5TH TIME - TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 25MPH. WHILE CROSSING RAILROAD TRACKS, CAR CUT OFF - RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY. HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. ALL REPAIRS DONE UNDER MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. PARTS MAY STILL BE AVAILABLE AT DEALERSHIP. EACH INCIDENT BETWEEN 2-4 WEEKS APART. DEALERSHIP KEPT CAR DURING LAST REPAIR FOR 6 WEEKS. STILL UNABLE TO REPAIR. REGIONAL REP CALLED AND SERVICED CAR AS WELL. NUMEROUS PARTS REPLACED AT THIS POINT, WITHOUT RESOLUTION. VERY BIG SAFETY ISSUE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. DATE OF 1ST INCIDENT 3/9/2010. DATE OF MOST RECENT INCIDENT 5/26/2010. *TR
THE FRONT OE TIRES ON MY 2008 BMW HAVE DEVELOPED SIDEWALL BUBBLES. THE TIRES ARE BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE050A, 225/40 R18. THIS IS INHERENTLY DANGEROUS. THERE ARE ALREADY SOME BRIDGESTONES WHICH THE COMPANY HAS RECOGNIZED AS FAULTY, THE ABOVE MODELS SHOULD BE ADDED TO THEIR LIST. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 BMW 335I (E90) THAT LOST BOTH HEADLIGHT WASHER COVERS WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY. THESE PARTS STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD WITH GREAT FORCE AND LIKELY HIT THE VEHICLES TRAVELING BEHIND MY CAR. THESE PARTS LIKELY LITTERED THE ROADWAY WITH DEBRIS THAT COULD CAUSE OTHER VEHICLES TO SWERVE TO AVOID RUNNING OVER THEM. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM/DEFECT WITH NEWER BMW VEHICLE (SEE BMWLAND AND E90POST WEBSITES FOR CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS). *TR
THE BRAKE SYSTEM SEEMS TO HAVE LOST ITS THREE PRESS BOOST. AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS, UPON STARTING THE CAR (2008 BMW 335XI AUTO) THE PRESS ON THE BRAKE IS STIFF. IT IS STIFF BECAUSEIT SEEMS TO HAVE LOSS THE 3 PRESS BOOST. THE BOOST THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT THE DRIVER IN CASE OF ENGINE FAILURE. NO OTHER CARE I HAVE OWNED LEAKS OUT ITS BOOST OVERNIGHT. BMW ADMITTED THAT THE BRAKE CHECK VALVE WAS BAD AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED PART. I ASKED WHAT THIS NEW DESIGN WAS AND THEY COULD NOT TELL ME. I READ ONLINE THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WHICH STARTS WITH A STIFF BRAKE PEDAL THEN IT DEGRADES INTO THE SYSTEM NOT BEING ABLE TO START THE CAR. BMW TO THEIR CREDIT IMMEDIATELY FOUND ANOTHER PART AND LOANED ME A CAR IN THE MEANTIME. THE LOANED CAR HOWEVER DID NOT SHOW THIS STIFF PEDAL ISSUE. THE NEW PART THEY PUT IN AFTER ABOUT 1 MONTH STARTED TO LOSE BOOST IN THE MORNINGS OFF AND ON. I BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY SAID THIS IS NORMAL? I"M WORRIED THAT IF I LOSE ENGINE FUNCTION GOING DOWN A HILL SOMEWHERE THAT THEY THREE PRESS BOOST WON'T BE THEIR FOR ME IF WE ALLOW IT TO GET WORSE. SUFFICE TO SAY, ONCE THE ENGINE STARTS YOU GET THE NORMAL POWER ASSISTED BRAKING; HOWEVER, THIS DOES NOT ADDRESS THE ENGINE OFF THREE BRAKE PRESS SAFETY REQUIREMENT. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 BMW 335I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING A RECURRING FAILURE IN WHICH IT WOULD CRANK FOR AN EXTREMELY LONG, UNUSUAL TIME BEFORE STARTING. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, IT WOULD BEGIN TO SHAKE UNUSUALLY AND ACCELERATE EXTREMELY SLOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,000.
THIS IS THE SECOND FAILURE OF THE HPFP IN MY 2008 BMW 335I. IT OCCURRED WHEN I LEFT WORK AND STARTED CAR AND THE CAR SHUDDERED AND THE INDICATOR SHOWED THAT THE CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE (REDUCED POWER). DROVE THE CAR TO MY CHILD'S PRESCHOOL AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. STARTED THE CAR AND AGAIN THE CAR WENT INTO LIMP MODE. MULTIPLE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP(HPFP) FAILURES. WHILE DRIVING DOWN A BUSY AVENUE THE ENGINE UNEXPECTEDLY SHUTS DOWN DUE TO THE HPFP FAILING. THIS WAS AFTER THE CAR HAD MADE 2 PREVIOUS VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPAIR HPFP PROBLEMS. CURRENTLY I AM NOW ON MY 3RD HPFP IN 2MONTHS. UNSAFE CAR TO DRIVE, ESPECIALLY IF THIS WAS TO OCCUR AT HIGH SPEEDS ON A HIGHWAY. I BELIEVE YOU HAVE RECEIVED MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ON THE N54 ENGINE IN MY 2008 335XI HAS GONE BAD TWICE IN THE PAST MONTH. MY BMW 335I ONLY HAD A FEW THOUSAND MILES WHEN I BEGAN NOTICING IT TOOK AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF TIME TO START THE ENGINE. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY EXPLAINED BMW WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM AND THEY WOULD TAKE PROPER STEPS TO ENSURE THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THEY CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP AND WHATEVER OTHER SEALS NEEDED TO BE CHANGED. CAR SEEMED TO WORK JUST FINE FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS, NOW THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS TO CRANK FOR AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF TIME AGAIN IN ORDER TO GET THE CAR TO START. I AM CONCERNED THIS WILL NOT BE PROPERLY FIXED AGAIN. TWO ADDITIONAL VISITS TO THE SHOP FOR THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES-CAR STALLED ON THE FREEWAY LOSING ALL POWER AND DEALERSHIP REPLACED INJECTORS, IGNITION COILS, SPARKPLUGS AND THE MOST RECENT CLAIM THAT THE CAR WAS LOW ON FUEL WITH 1/4 TANK! WHEN CAR DIES ALL OF A SUDDEN ON THE FREEWAY AT A SPEED OF 60+ MILES PER HOUR IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. ALEXANDER MATHIS HAS ENCOUNTERED THESE "EXACT" ISSUES LISTED BELOW IN THE CORRESPONDENCE FROM BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC. WE'VE TAKEN THE INITIATIVE TO TAKE VEHICLE BACK TO THE UNITED BMW OF ROSWELL ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS PERTAINING TO ISSUES. TO OUR AMAZEMENT, BMW ROSWELL COMMUNICATED THAT THE FUEL IN THE VEHICLE HAD TO MUCH ETHANOL IN THE FUEL TANK. THEY SAID THE BMW ONLY ALLOWS 10% OF ETHANOL IN THE GASOLINE AND THAT SOME TEST WERE SHOWING THAT THERE WAS 15% OF ETHANOL IN THE FUEL. NONETHELESS, WE FAXED OVER A COPY OF THE GAS RECEIPT WHICH CERTAINLY SHOWS THAT WE PUT 93 OCTANE GAS IN BOTH OF OUR BMW'S. WE BOTH USE THE SAME GAS STATIONS AND THE SAME 93 OCTANE FUEL. HOWEVER, THE 2006 330I SEDAN IS NOT EXPERIENCING ANY PROBLEMS AT ALL, BUT THE 335I IS EXPERIENCING THAT VERY ISSUES THAT BMW NORTH AMERICA LISTED BELOW IN THEIR CORRESPONDENCE. WE NEVER BROUGHT THIS ISSUE TO BMW NORTH AMERICA, LLC'S ATTENTION. HOWEVER, WE STILL RECEIVED A LETTER IN MAIL PERTAINING TO THESE "EXACT" ISSUES. THIS IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING TO THE CUSTOMER THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE CAUGHT UP IN AN ISSUE BETWEEN UNITED BMW ROSWELL, BMW NORTH AMERICA, LLC AND EXXON GAS STATION WHERE THE FUEL WAS PURCHASED. PERSONALLY, I JUST COULDN'T IMAGINE BMW ALLOWING THEIR VALUABLE CUSTOMERS TO GO THROUGH SUCH A CUMBERSOME AND TEDIOUS PROCESS TO GET THEIR VEHICLE REPAIRED.
