NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 BMW X1. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2017 BMW X1. The contact stated his wife was driving at 35 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed to slow the vehicle down however her purse got entrapped near the brake pedal and accelerator pedal causing her to crash into the vehicle in front who was stopped. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belt failed to retract. The contacts wife collided with the steering wheel due to the impact. The contact's wife suffered chest injuries where a doctor later confirmed she had a cracked sternum. A police report was filed, and the vehicle was towed to a Collison Center. The dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
Transmission error see service provider and park with emergency brake. Seems to be a lot of faulty springs in shifter on a lot of BMW’s. This should be a recall
Car won't start up on first try anymore. Taking 3 tries. Keeps saying that there is no signal. Seems like from the bimmer forum a lot of people are having the same issue. Also saying to close the hood when the hood isn't open. It's happening every day now that the messages are popping up and the car won't start! I hope there is a recall asap. I've only had this car for a year and is has $38k miles on it! Absolutely ridiculous. These cars are to expensive to be dealing with this issue!
An Error / Warning Message occurs which states "Secure Vehicle Against Rolling" when the ignition is first activated. There is no obvious failure in parking or while driving. Only the Message which indicates that the vehicle should be service. This issue shows up rather frequently online and appears to be due to a broken spring in the gear box exchange. There is an extensive video as to how to replace the broken spring though it is rather difficult to access the spring itself, the cost of the spring is ~$5.00 USD. The Dealer Service Rep appears to have no knowledge of this issue - though his effort to offer a solution was to just bring the car in for service. Again, it was not difficult to find this issue online which appears to occur rather frequently as I can tell. Several comments have indicated that no performance issue was noted, and due to the high cost of repair (Labor Cost through BMW), no action was typically taken to resolve the issue. Please check to see if a formal recall is required to fix what appears to be a poor quality / design issue with a simple spring.
My 2017 BMW x1 with around 45,000 miles randomly pops up with a "secure vehicle against rolling" warning on my dash when I park now. After reading online, it seems to be a very common issue among BMW x1's that should be a recall.
There is a light that came on that states Transmission: secure vehicle against rolling. This is a common problem with these cars and is very expensive to fix. This is a defect in these cars and I don’t want to find out what will happen in the event that my car does roll especially my children in the car. I chose BMW because it is not only a luxury vehicle but was suppose to be safe. This to me is NOT safe.
Error message displayed: "Secure vehicle against rolling" This message is displayed due to a broken spring in the gear selector mechanism. Because of the broken spring, the car's computer cannot detect whether or not the gear selector is in park. This creates a safety hazard because the gear selector can be shifted into Drive without having your foot on the brake. Note that a very large number of BMW owners have complained about this problem on social media and in the BMW message forum. This is clearly wide scale problem that stems from a faulty design and it creates a potential safety hazard. As such, BMW should be forced to do a formal recall to correct this issue. The repair effort requires 6-8 hours of work to tear apart the center console, replace the spring, and put it all back together...at a cost of around $2,000. Consumers should not have the bear the cost for what is clearly a design flaw.
Warning on dashboard “Secure vehicle against rolling” appear when vehicle is on parking mode and hand brake on.
I took my car for a new battery. I was told I needed to replace the gear selector.at a cost of 3,000. After reading reading several post about this situation happening to a bunch of people.it should be a recall.
Code 420106: Shiftlock Solenoid: selector wrongly not locked in park. 'Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary' error message in I-drive. This is a very common issue with these vehicles, and BMW refused to help due to the labor cost involved. It's a $0.50 part and with labor the repair exceeds $2000. Essentially the vehicle does not realized if it is in park or not, and chimes at you to use the parking brake to prevent it from rolling. There are thousands of people affected by this very expensive manufacturer's defect.
I am getting a warning when I turn on the car to secure vehicle against rolling.
Warning light - Secure Vehicle from rolling Car is in Park and Brake is applied but warning light comes up
car started showing an error every time I got into the vehicle saying to "Secure vehicle against rolling. Apparently it's a common issue with the gear selector.
Error message Secure Vehicle from Rolling
"Secure vehicle against rolling" warning effecting my vehicle. Looking online, I can not believe how many others have this very same error. Bmw should do a fix recall because they want to charge 3000 dollars for a 5 dollar spring replacement.
The fix transition to "stop vehicle from rolling" light is on but it's just the warning light and is requiring a replacement of a part that is not broken.
Every time I put the car in park I get a warning, "Secure Vehicle from Rolling", when I put the car in park.
“Secure car against rolling” Message caused by failing spring that bmw appears to want >$4000 to fix while the part is only 5-6$. Appears to be a very common problem for this vehicle that needs to be addressed by bmw. Thanks
The hatch will randomly auto-close either immediately after opening, or sometimes 15+ seconds after opening where you think it's safe to load items in or out. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Others report the issue: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1392539 I had it in for other repairs and they quoted me at around $700 for repairs. Since it's intermittent, I'm not confident that's the fix and started seeing that others are reporting it. I think it's an issue BMW needs to address from a safety perspective. If you don't act fast enough and move out of the way, the hatch will hit my head and that's not enough resistance for it to stop at that point. You must push back on it with your arms to get it to stop. Some won't have the strength to resist it and could get really hurt.
Warning light comes on stating “Secure Vehicle from Rolling” when vehicle is in park. I called BMW and took the vehicle in the next morning. The BMW dealership stated the Transmission needed to be repaired shift lever module. At a cost of $2,858.40.
Vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair. The dealer mechanics diagnosed a failed engine mount bolt. Vehicle mileage is 66965. This vehicle is driven lightly and this failure seems to be premature.
I’m having an issue with the warning light saying “Secure Vehicle from Rolling“. Many other owners reporting same issue in online discussion groups and forums. Expensive fix for a recurring issue that should be subject to a recall.
Error msg indicating “secure vehicle against rolling” appeared. Also, “Transmission: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center.” Apparently from many comments from other BMW owners and mechanics the issue is common and is related to an inexpensive spring that has broken in the shifter box. It seems the broken spring prevents the electronic system from receiving a signal that the car is in Park. Also, from comments, this a very expensive repair. I’m not sure of the safety risk with this.
Transmision message warning "secure vehicle with parking brake”. “Secure Vehicle from Rolling”
- Automatic transmission gearshifter, torsion spring. - The vehicle could roll when it is parked without engaging engine break and hit other vehicles and pedestrian. - Not confirmed by the dealer yet. The service visit is scheduled. However, on the Internet, many people complaining for $2,000-$3,000 repair estimates for $10 or less torsion spring breakage. - The problem started December 5, 2021. This is a product Liability and quality issue and consumers should be able to get the actual part repair not replace the whole thing.
Warning light appears: Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error. I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous complaints by BMW X1 owners who discovered that it was a $10 spring in the shifter that dealers were charging between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. Many opted not to do the repair due to the excessive cost, a decision that could prove catastrophic for some. In the likely event that your agency is already aware of this problem, I am writing to add my name to the list of complaints in the hope that NHTSA investigates and perhaps orders a recall.
Secure vehicle against roll. This is a common issue but there is no active recall.
have a 2017 BMW X1, and have an issue with the back hatch closing on its own ( Auto Hatch Closing Feature). It can close on it's own when i walk behind it, sometimes when i am sitting on the back changing my golf shoes...I have to get out of the way before it hits me in the head. I have even tried to push up on the hatch after it starts closing and it will continue to close. It could easily close on a small child or animal and cause harm. This is the foot sensor, and it is too sensitive. IBM says they have no iDrive software ( or did not know about it) to disable this feature in the 2017 model. It is dangerous and annoying.
It appears that a component in the gear selector has failed to properly detect the gear selector position, specifically when it is in park. Even though the gear selector is in park and the parking brake is applied as indicated by lights and physically attempting to move the vehicle, there is a warning message to secure a vehicle with parking brake to prevent it from rolling. Therefore the functionality of this safety device, the warning message, has failed. The cost to repair this is extraordinary and will lead people to not have it repaired, unless it is repairable under warranty. Without repair, people will just ignore the message and then, if they were to actually leave the gear selector in neutral , have the potential for property damage or injury caused by the vehicle rolling. I believe this failure should be the subject of the recall.
I have been complaining about roughness for quite some time. Especially when are is cold. I have a 2017 X1, less than 40k and the engine mount cracked BMW Service informed me this is an known issue within BMW. Not only x1 but X2 and some X3 models. Also said the others will crack within 10-20K miles I had made the concern known about the car almost or complete stalling out to the dealerships. Link below to the video. Part was thrown away on Saturday (I am told) No warning lamps, messages. Just some roughness tough who would think engine mount issue under 40K. Due to Covid car is out of warranty by 6mos as it wasn't driven as much as it would have been under normal times. Video of issue https://api.mykaarma.com/video-walkaround/details?inspection_uuid=6174461f01a695000135cd1a&fileType=image_and_video
The contact owns a 2017 BMW X1. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the warning message "Secure Vehicle with Parking Brake" illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to drive the vehicle; however, he would engage the parking brake whenever he was parking the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the solenoid and spring had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
The air conditioning in the car after changing the air filters has a nasty vinegar smell. Hundreds of others on BMW forums complain about the same thing.
The rear hatch constantly closes on it's own when putting things in or pulling things out of the trunk. I've had my head hit by the lid or had to scramble to prevent it from hurting someone else. This is a safety hazard that BMW refuses to fix.
ROUGH IDLE UPON START UP. OCCURS DAILY. WEATHER IS NOT A FACTOR. CONFIRMED WITH COLLISION CENTER.

2017 BMW X1. The rear hatch will unexpectedly open or close on its own. This is a safety hazard for anyone standing near the hatch, especially small children.
THE REAR HATCH OF THE BMW WILL SPONTANEOUSLY CLOSE WITHOUT WARNING - CAUSING THE DOOR TO SLAM INTO ONES HEAD. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED IMAGE FROM CARFAX. THIS OPEN RECALL WAS OPENED 4/17/19 AND WITH NO REMEDY I'M UNABLE TO TRADE MY VEHICLE IN WITH A NON BMW DEALERSHIP. MY ONLY OPTION IS TO TRADE INTO THE DEALER AND THEY SELL AT AUCTION. I WILL TAKE A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS DOING THIS. I MOVED TO AN AREA LAST YEAR THAT RECEIVES A LOT OF SNOW AND ICE. MY CURRENT X1 STRUGGLES IN THOSE WEATHER CONDITIONS SO I WAS TRYING TO GET A BIGGER SUV. I CONTACTED BMW AND WAS NOT PROVIDED A TIMELINE A REMEDY WILL BE AVAILABLE AND THAT THERE IS NO WAY TO PRIORITIZE THIS MATTER. ALL I WAS TOLD IS PARTS ARE COMING IN SOMETIME THIS MONTH.
THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL (RECALL # 19V349). HOWEVER NO SOLUTION IS IN PLACE AND I'M AT RISK DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH REAR SEAT PASSENGERS (INCLUDING KIDS). THE RECALL CAME IN APRIL AND IT'S OCTOBER - WITH 6 MONTHS, NO SOLUTION HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AND NOTHING IS DONE FROM BMW.

THE TAILGATE AUTOMATICALLY STARTS CLOSING ON ME WHEN I AM LOADING OR UNLOADING. IT STARTS BEEPING SO I AT LEAST GET A WARNING BUT I HAVE TO PUT MY HAND UP AND STOP IT FROM CRASHING ON MY HEAD. I HAVE TOLD MY DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS SINCE THE FIRST FEW TIMES IT HAPPENED, BUT WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. NOTE MY FEET ARE NOT GOING UNDER THE BUMPER (AND THAT FEATURE DOES NOT WORK ON THIS CAR EVER ANYWAY). THIS HAPPENS WHEN CAR IS STOPPED AND TURNED OFF. HOWEVER ONE TIME THE TRUNK OPENED ON ME WHEN I WAS STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AT A RED LIGHT AND HAD TO GET OUT OF THE CAR TO GO SHUT IT. NOT CONVENIENT.
THE TRUNK STARTS CLOSING BY ITSELF, 100S OF EXAMPLES ON THE INTERNET FOR THIS HAPPENING.
