WATER PUMP AND THERMOSTAT HAVE FAILED AT 63,000 MILES. THAT IS AN EXTREMELY SHORT LIFE SPAN FOR THOSE ITEMS AND FROM GENERAL RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X3. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED WHEN SWITCHING FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE SHOOK AND VIBRATED SEVERELY. DURING THE FAILURE, THE CHECK ENGINE AND POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTION INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO EDISON OPEN ROAD BMW (731 US HIGHWAY 1, EDISON, NJ) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,222.
THE MOTHERBOARD IN THE VEHICLES REAR TAIL LIGHTS AND REVERSE LIGHTS GOES BAD WHICH WILL CAUSE THE LED LIGHTS TO GO OUT. THERE IS NO WAY TO REPLACE THE LED LIGHTS WITHOUT REPLACING THE WHOLE LIGHT ASSEMBLY. THIS IS AN ISSUE AND IT IS KNOWN BY BMW. SINCE OWNING MY VEHICLE I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LIGHTS 4 TIMES. IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE MOTHERBOARD CHIP IN THE LIGHT
EXPERIENCED DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION WARNING ALONG WITH SHAKING AND LIMP MODE NUMEROUS TIMES WHICH RESULTED IN 2 REPAIRS LAST YEAR IN THE THOUSANDS ONLY TO FIND OUT IT WAS DUE TO THE CAM SHAFT BOLTS RECALL AT THE ROOT OF THE INITIAL CAUSE OF THE FAILURES THAT RESULTED. BMW WAS HESITANT TO PAY INITIALLY BUT MY HUSBAND IS A LITIGATION ATTORNEY AND ONCE HE GOT INVOLVED, THEY WERE QUICK IN DOING THE RIGHT THING. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING ISSUES WITH THE NO WARNING LIGHT SHOWING TO WARN ME OF A LOW COOLANT LEVEL. IT WAS NOT UNTIL AFTER SMOKE APPEARED FROM THE ENGINE AREA AND A BURNING SMELL THAT THE WARNING FINALLY APPEARED. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AND WAITED FOR IT COOL OFF & HAD COOLANT PUT IN, WARNING LIGHT DISAPPEARED. CURRENTLY SMELLING A BURNING SMELL AND HEARING A SQUEAKING NOISE SO HAVE A SERVICE SCHEDULED TOMORROW FOR THE VALVE HEATER RECALL AND HOPE BMW WILL ADDRESS ANY ISSUES STEMMING FROM THAT THAT MAY BE CAUSING OTHER ISSUES. ALSO TO REPORT, RARELY EVER USE THE GLOVE BOX YET THE CORNER OF THE GLOVE BOX HAS COME APART AND WILL NOT REATTACH. I SAW THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE REPORTED BY MANY BMW X-3 OWNERS AND I WILL BE EXPECTING BMW TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND PAY TO FIX THIS KNOWN DEFECT.
I CAME OUTSIDE ONE MORNING TO FIND THAT ALL MY WINDOWS WERE ROLLED DOWN, THE SUNROOF WAS ROLLED COMPLETELY BACK, AND THE DOORS WERE UNLOCKED. IT HAD BEEN RAINING HEAVILY THE NIGHT BEFORE AND THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY SOAKED. THE IDRIVE SYSTEM, RADIO, AND SEATS WERE COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. ALMOST EVERY LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD WAS ON - LOW TIRE PRESSURE, ABS, AIRBAG LIGHT, PARKING BRAKE MALFUNCTION, CEL, OIL LIGHT, AND OTHERS. UPON FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION, I DISCOVERED THAT THE CAR WOULD OPEN COMPLETELY IF I UNWITTINGLY HELD THE UNLOCK KEY FOR NO MORE THAN 3 SECONDS. 3 SECONDS HAS COST ME THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRING CONNECTORS, THE IDRIVE SYSTEM, REPLACING CARPETS, AND MORE. ON TOP OF THAT, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR ALMOST A MONTH BECAUSE OF THE TIME IT TAKES TO INVESTIGATE THESE ISSUES AND ORDER REPLACEMENT PARTS.
ALL LED TAILLIGHTS ON THE BACK OF VEHICLE ARE NOT WORKING. THE CAR DID NOT INDICATE THAT THE LIGHTS WERE OUT LIKE IT DOES FOR OTHER LIGHT FAILURES. AS A RESULT, WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE TAILLIGHT FAILURE AT NIGHT BY A CAR SPEEDING UP BEHIND US ON THE FREEWAY. THE CAR PROCEEDED TO FLASH THEIR LIGHTS AT US UNTIL WE PULLED OVER TO INSPECT WHAT WAS GOING ON. WE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO A BMW REPAIR SHOP AND THEY INDICATED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER IDENTICAL VEHICLE (2011 BMW X3) WITH EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE--ALL 4 LED TAILLIGHTS FAILED. WE THEN WENT TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM INSPECT WHAT THE ISSUE IS AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE TAILLIGHT FAILURE. THEIR REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE LIGHTS AT SIGNIFICANT COST. GIVEN THAT THEY CAN'T IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE AND ITS A PERVASIVE ISSUE WITH OTHER X3S AFFECTED, I BELIEVE THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL OF BMW AND NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY. WE DRIVE A BLACK CAR AND IT'S SCARY TO THINK WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THAT OTHER DRIVER WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION WHEN OUR TAIL LIGHTS WERE OUT...
TAIL LIGHTS WILL FAIL WITH NO WARNING LIGHT OR MESSAGE DISPLAYED IN DASH BOARD. X3'S EQUIPPED WITH HID HEADLAMPS COME WITH FOUR LED TAIL LAMPS. IN EACH LAMP, THERE IS A CIRCUIT BOARD THAT WILL FAIL DUE TO POOR QUALITY CONTROL (THE RESISTORS AND/OR CAPACITORS WILL GET DETACHED FROM CIRCUIT BOARD) , THEREFORE, THE LAMPS WILL STOP WORKING. USUALLY, WHEN LIGHTS BURN OUT, THE DASH WARNS THE DRIVER, BUT NOT FOR THIS FAILURE. THE OWNER COULD BE DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH NO TAIL LAMPS, AND IT COULD LEAD TO A REAR END COLLISION. THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE BULB BURNING OUT DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT LED DRIVER WHICH SHOULD BE REPLACED BY BMW BECAUSE IT IS FAULTY.
2011 BMW X3 XDRIVE28I. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO SAFETY RECALL NO. 17V-683 PCV VALVE HEATER AND INQUIRES IF REIMBURSEMENT WILL BE ISSUED. *AS *JS
JUNCTION BOX FAILURE. I STARTED HAVING ALL TYPES OF RANDOM ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. WIPERS COME ON AT RANDOM. DOOR LOCKS, BACK WINDOWS, AND TURN SIGNALS WON'T WORK WHEN THIS HAPPENS. I READ THAT THIS ISSUE WAS HAPPENING IN OTHER MODELS, BUT DON'T SEE THAT THE BMW X3 ITSELF WASN'T CALLED OUT. HAD THE ISSUE LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE STORED CODES WERE FOR MAIN JUNCTION BOX FAILURE OR NO MESSAGE RECEIVED FROM MAIN JUNCTION BOX. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION, ISSUE STILL HAPPENS. SOMETIME WHEN I TURN OFF THE CAR, THE WIPERS ARE STILL GOING. SOMETIMES IF I JUST OPEN THE DOOR, WITHOUT TURNING ON THE CAR, THE WIPERS WILL START TO GO.
WHILE DRIVING, THE STEERING FAILED SUDDENLY WHERE I WAS UNABLE TO STEER. IT BECAME LOCKED. IT SAID I HAD A CHASSIS STABILIZATION MALFUNCTION. THE STEERING WHEEL ALSO APPEARED. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE SYSTEM RESET AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AGAIN. IT BECAME VERY FREQUENT WHERE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED DRIVING ON LOCAL STREETS AND ON A HIGHWAY. WHEN I BROUGHT IT INTO THE REPAIR SHOP, I WAS TOLD THAT THE STEERING MODULE AND STEERING RACK WAS MALFUNCTIONING. THEY SAID THAT BMWNA DID NOT HAVE A RECALL OR FIX ON THIS ISSUE. MY REPAIR SHOP SAID I WOULD NEED TO PAY THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. I HAVE READ THAT MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD THIS CODE CLEARED FROM THE REPAIR SHOP A NUMBER OF TIMES NOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X3. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A U TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER (BMW OF LAS VEGAS, 6900 W SAHARA AVE, LAS VEGAS, NV) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DETERMINED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS PERTAINING TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V341000 (STEERING), BUT THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
BMW X3 XDRVIE35I POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTION SHOWED UP VERY FREQUENTLY WHILE I DROVE ON HIGHWAY, SHUDDERING VIOLENTLY AND I HAD TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM BECAME A SERIOUS ISSUE LATELY THAT I COULD NO LONGER DRIVE MY X3 ANYMORE. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT A LOCAL BNW DEALERSHIP AND HOPE THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 BMW X3. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT CALLED BMW OF CONCORD AT (925) 682-3577 (LOCATED AT 1967 MARKET ST, CONCORD, CA 94520) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY ONLY WOULD REPAIR WHAT WAS LISTED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 17V683000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,246.
THERE ARE 4 LED TAIL LIGHTS ON THIS MOTOR VEHICLE. 3 OF THE 4 HAVE QUIT WORKING. THE FIRST ONE BMW FIXED; THE SECOND ONE I FIXED OUT OF MY POCKET. THE THIRD ONE TO QUIT WORKING IS AWAITING REPAIR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE ALL THE TAIL LIGHTS NEED TO BE WORKING, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. IF THE OUTER TAIL LIGHT IS NOT WORKING CONSPICUITY FROM THE SIDE IS SEVERELY REDUCED, ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. BMW TAKES THE POSITION THAT THIS X3 IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY HAVE NO FURTHER RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. I TAKE THE POSITION THAT THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT AND PRODUCT LIABILITY ISSUE FOR WHICH THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE. THE LED DRIVER CIRCUIT BOARD IS DEFECTIVE, BUT BMW IS NOT WILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS A PROBLEM. THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF X3 2011-2016 WITH THE F25 BODY THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY WHEN I NOTICED THE PROBLEM BUT WAS PROBABLY IN MOTION WHEN THE TAIL LIGHT SEGMENT FAILED. FOR LED TAIL LIGHT SEGMENTS TO HAVE A 75% FAILURE RATE SEEMS EXCESSIVE AND UNACCEPTABLE. WOULD BE HAPPY TO DISCUSS THIS WITH YOU.
WATERPUMP SHUTDOWN. CAR SHUT DOWN ON HIGHWAY.
THE SUNROOF STOPPED CLOSING.I TRIED TO OPEN WINDOWS AND SUNROOF USING THE KEYFOB WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAD IT CHECKED AND THEY SAID THE FZD ROOF MODULE HAS TO BE REPLACED.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW X3. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into neutral. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was linked to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V707000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the engine and redesigned the timing gear assembly. The local dealer was contacted and confirmed the parts were not yet available. The contact called another local dealer, BMW of Northwest Arkansas (2500 SE Moberly Ln, Bentonville, AR 72712, (479)286-3012); but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 8,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PARTS WERE TO BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.
SUA. I WAS IN A FRIGHTENING ACCIDENT ATTEMPTING TO PARK MY CAR ON THE ROOFTOP OF MY 4 STORY OFFICE BUILDING. I PULLED INTO A SPACE ON THE EDGE OF THE LOT AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, I WAS ABOUT TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK WHEN THE ENGINE LOUDLY AND SUDDENLY REVVED AND THE CAR SURGED FORWARD UP ONTO A CONCRETE CURB AND RAMMED INTO A 4 FT HIGH CONCRETE RETAINING WALL. THE FORCE OF THE IMPACT TORE THE WALL APART FROM THE ROOF - MY CAR WAS STILL ACCELERATING, WHEELS SPINNING. THE BROKE WALL STOPPED BY CAR FROM COMPLETELY GOING OVER AND I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF AND GET OUT. THERE WERE WITNESSES WHO CAN VERIFY THAT I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP, BRAKE LIGHTS ON AND IT ALL HAPPENED IN A FEW SECONDS. IT WAS SO SHOCKING THAT I WILL NEVER DRIVE A BMW AGAIN.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AND THE FOLLOWING WARNING MESSAGE APPEARED: "DRIVE TRAIN MALFUNCTION NOT RUNNING AT FULL CAPACITY, REDUCE AND DRIVE MODERATELY". THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY NEEDED REPLACEMENT AND THE VANOS MALFUNCTIONED. THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC REPLACED THE BATTERY AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL A LOCAL BMW DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V176000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO START AND DUE TO BAD WEATHER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTION NOTE APPEARED. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND BATTERY WAS REPLACED. IT HAPPENED AGAIN ONE WEEK LATER. THEY REPLACED THE COILS. THE WARNING APPEARED AGAIN.
AFTER THE ENGINE WAS TURNED ON, THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED WITH AN WARNING MESSAGE OF "CHASSIS STABILITY/STEERING. CHASSIS STABILITY MALFUNCTION. TRACTION REDUCED. A CHANGE IN STEERING BEHAVIOR OR STEERING WHEEL ANGLE IS POSSIBLE. CONTINUED DRIVING IS POSSIBLE. DRIVE MODERATELY. HAVE THE SYSTEM CHECKED BY THE NEAREST BMW CENTER." RESTARTED THE CAR MULTIPLE TIMES AT WHICH POINT, THE STEERING SYSTEM FELT FINE AGAIN. AFTER DRIVING IT FOR LESS THAN 10 MILES ON CITY STREETS, THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING IN THE MIDST OF DRIVING ON THE ROAD. THE CAR WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND HAD TO COME TO A STOP ON A BUSY ROAD. TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR MULTIPLE TIME BUT KEPT GETTING THE ERROR MESSAGE "STEERING RESPONSE AFFECTED! DRIVE MODERATELY. HAVE THE SYSTEM CHECKED BY THE NEAREST BMW CENTER." IT HAD TO BE TOWED ON A FLATBED TO A SHOP AT THIS POINT. THE CAR JUST BARELY HIT 50K (50,0049) MILES AND HAD BEEN KEEPING UP WITH THE MAINTENANCE REGULARLY IN THE PAST.

CONTACT CALLED BMW AND BMW DEALERSHIP STATED THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR A PREVIOUS RECALL. CONTACT HAD A VACCUM OIL LEAK IN CAR DUE TO PCV VALVE LEAK. THE PCV VALVE HEATER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PRODUCED TO SPECIFICATIONS. OVER TIME, IT COULD DETERIORATE AND, IN RARE CASES, COULD LEAD TO OVERHEATING. SAFETY RISK IF OVERHEATING OCCURS, THEN IN RARE CASES, THIS COULD LEAD TO MELTING OF THE PCV VALVE. IN EXTREMELY RARE CASES, THIS COULD LEAD TO A FIRE.
RECALL 16V311000,DRIVE SHIFT, MY CAR HAS DEVELOP THE SAME ISSUE THE OTHER MODELS OF THE SAME YEAR WHEN THIS RECALL WAS ISSUED,HOWEVER MY MODEL X3 IS NOT ON THIS RECALL.IF DRIVE SHIFTS BRAKES IN MY CAR DOES THIS MEAN IT COULDN'T CAUSE ME TO HAVE A ACCIDENT? THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.PLEASE ADVISE.

3 OUT OF THE 4 LED TAIL LIGHTS HAVE STOP WORKING. THE CAR DID NOT GAVE ME ANY NOTICE OF THE TAIL LIGHTS FAILING. WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, I WAS STOPPED BY A POLICE OFFICER AND GIVEN A WARNING. ON FURTHER RESEARCH, THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW WITHIN THE TAIL LIGHT SYSTEM THAT WILL CAUSE IT TO FAIL. IT SEEMS BMW ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE BUT ONLY COVERS REPAIR TO CARS UNDER WARRANTY. DUE TO THIS DEFECTIVE COMPONENT I'VE ALREADY SPENT 4000+ IN REPAIRS AND STILL THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AND I'M DRIVING UNSAFELY AS I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO REPAIR FURTHER. THERE APPEARS TO BE A CHRONIC DEFECT ON BMW X3S (2011-2017 F-25 CHASSIS) OF LET TAIL LIGHT FAILURES DUE TO DEFECTIVE LED CURRENT REGULATOR CIRCUIT BOARDS. OUR X3 HAS HAD 3 OF THE 4 LED TAIL LIGHTS FAIL BECAUSE OF EXACTLY THE SAME DEFECT. SOME OF THE LED CURRENT REGULATOR BOARDS WERE APPARENTLY POORLY SOLDERED AND SOLDER JOINT FAILURE CAUSE COMPLETE OR PARTIAL LOSS OF THE TAIL LIGHTS. THE "ON-BOARD" LIGHT MONITORING SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE DOES NOT REPORT THE LIGHT FAILURE, SO THE OWNER IS USUALLY NOT AWARE THAT THE VEHICEL HAS NO TAIL LIGHTS VISABLE. ON OUR X3 THE LED TAIL LIGHT FAILURE WAS TRACED TO THE SAME COMPONENT ON ALL (3) LIGHTS. TEH CIRCUIT BOARD (LABELED VALEO B 003809.2) HAD A RESISTOR (R750) THAT WAS NOT SOLDERED PROPERLY. RE-SOLDERING THE COMPONENT FIXED THE PROBLEM AND RESTORED CORRECT LED TAIL LIGHT OPERATION. THERE ARE MANY ON-LINE REPORTS OF BMW X3S HAVING EXACTLY THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT THE WELL-KNOWN 3-SERIES AND 5-SERIES TAIL LIGHT ISSUE RELATED TO CONNECTOR GROUND ISSUES. THE X3 TAIL LIGHT ISSUE IS DUE TO POOR CIRCUIT BOARD MANUFACTURING LEADING TO EARLY FAILURES. IT IS ESPECIALLY OC CONCERN BECAUSE THE OWNER MAY EXPECT TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE LIGHT FAILURE BY THE BMW ON-BOARD MONITOR SYSTEM (WHICH WILL REPORT HEADLIGHT, TURN SIGNAL OR BRAKE LIGHT FAILURES BUT NOT THE LED TAIL LIGHTS LOSS. WHEN THE CIRCUIT BOARD FAILS, THE LED LIGHTS ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING OR PARKED WITH PARKING LIGHTS TURNED ON. THE TAIL LIGHTS ARE STILL DARK. IN MY OPINION, THIS CONSTITUTES A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE FOR ALL "F-25" BMW X3S AND SHOULD BE THE BASIS FOR A RECALL. THE (PLUG-IN) CIRCUIT BOARDS CAN BE EASILY REMOVED AND REPLACED WITHOUT REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE (EXPENSIVE) (ABOUT $340 EACH) TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY.

I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND WAS CALLED BACK BY THE AUTO PLACE AND WAS TOLD THAT, WHILE THEY WERE TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE IT HAD A MAJOR ENGINE FALIURE, RESULTING IN THEM HAVING TO TOW THE CAR AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TIMING CHAIN HAD BROKEN AND THERE WAS MASSIVE DAMAGE INTERNALLY TO THE ENGINE, VALVES HAD BEEN BENT DUE TO FAILURE. AT RESTART IT SEEMED OK, BUT THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO FINALLY GET TO MY HOUSE. STOPPING AND RE-STARTING SEVERAL TIMES. LOSING ALL POWER, BRAKES, STEERING, ETC AT EACH INSTANCE. VEHICLE WAS PLACED ON A FLAT BED AND TAKEN TO SEWICKLEY BMW THE FOLLOWING DAY. AFTER ALMOST A WEEK, THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME. I WAS TOLD IT WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. EXACTLY 2 WEEKS LATER THE SAME PROBLEMS RE-OCCURRED. AGAIN I WAS ON AN INTERSTATE AND THE LOSE OF CONTROL AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED COULD HAVE BEEN A CATASTROPHE IF AN INEXPERIENCE DRIVER WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AGAIN AND THIS TIME MORE WORK WAS DONE. THE DEALER SAID THAT THEY FOUND A BULLETIN FROM BMW THAT EXPLAINED THIS POSSIBILITY. I SAW THE BMW INFO AND IT UNDERSTATED WHAT ACTUALLY COULD OR WOULD OCCUR SHOULD THEIR SYSTEMS FAIL. IN MY OPINION, MY LIFE WAS IN SEVERE JEOPARDY WHEN THE FAILURES OCCURRED AND HAD I NOT BEEN AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER WITH CALM REACTIONS, A FATALITY IS NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION. MY WIFE WILL NO LONGER RIDE IN THE VEHICLE AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO GET RID OF IT ASAP. I CALLED BACK TO SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE HOME AS IT WAS IN LIMP MODE. CALLED BMW ASSIST AND THEY CAME AND GOT VEHICLE. ONCE AT SERVICE CENTER THEY STATED THE CLAMP HOLDING THE AIR INTAKE FOR THE TURBO HAD COME OFF. THEY PUT CLAMP BACK ON. *JS
THE PASSENGER RESTRAINT SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT BMW X3 CARS HAVE. WE HAVE THE SPORTS EDITION AND DESPITE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM THE SENSOR IN THE MAT CONTINUE TO INDICATE THE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY IF WE HAVE AN ACCIDENT DESPITE HOW SEVERE THAT ACCIDENT IS. WE HAVE CONTACTED THE BMW DEALERSHIP AND THEY PRETENDED OF KNOWING NOTHING ABOUT SIMILAR COMPLAINTS OR OF A RECALL ON THE SENSOR IN THE SEAT MAT. IT WILL COST US ABOUT 1,000 DOLLARS TO FIX. YET MOST TO ALL BMW OWNERS OF THE X3 SERIES, ESPECIALLY THE SPORTS EDITION HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
