While driving on a highway the message power train malfunction appears on screen and engine shut off only allowing me seconds to coast to edge of road it was at night we could have been hit from behind we were able to push it further off the highway I tried restarting it over and over about 10 minutes went by it started we proceeded to get to a safer area then had it towed in to bmw dealership [XXX] then dealer called said fixed pickup on 9/10 they said it was a update problem I drove out went about 3 miles exact thing happened again and I was on a very busy city intersection with people yelling at me to go thru light I started and restarted about 8 times then I proceeded back to dealership scared to death they took the car back then it stayed this time for 21 days they said this time it was Valvetronic and Mechatronic totally 8,887.50 but under warranty my car only had 6,736 miles on it I have all the invoice if needed. Our vehicle dies while driving down the highway, twice now in less than 30 days. I drivetrain and low-power warning came on, but the car died and wouldn't start. The obvious risk is that we were driving on the highway and barely avoided being in an accident as I tried to steer us off the road. The second time we were at a park. In both instnances, the temperature was over 100 degrees and my 3 and 5 year old both got sick from overheating. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere. The dealership said "it probably just overheated, we couldn't find anything" but assure us it won't happen again. It did less than 30 days later.
Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA. A high complaint count may reflect vehicle popularity, not defect severity. Data sourced from NHTSA public records.
