2006 CHEVY COBALT POWER STEER FAILURE. *TR
2006 COBALT STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ONLY GOING AT 25 MPH . CAUSING IT TO HIT AN EMBANKMENT AND DAMAGING THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. *TR
MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT AT TIME IS HARD TO TURN A LOW SPEED. I TALKED TO THE DEALER ABOUT THE PROBLEM. HE SAID HE COULD NOT TELL ME IF MY CAR WAS PART OF THE RECALL OR NOT. HE ALSO TOLD ME I SHOULD BE BE GETTING A WARING LIGHTON MY DASH *CN
MY POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON. "POWER STEERING" FLASHED ON MY DASHBOARD DIGITAL SCREEN, AND THE WHEEL STIFFENED UP. THE POWER STEERING DID NOT COME BACK ON THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF MY DRIVE. NOW EVERY TIME I TURN ON MY CAR, THE POWER STEERING WORKS FOR ABOUT ONE MINUTE, AND THEN IT FAILS AGAIN. I AM NOW HAVING TO CRANK MY WHEEL TO PARK, DRIVE ON NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS, ANYTHING THAT REQUIRES SLOWER SPEEDS. I HAD HEARD THAT THERE MAY BE A RECALL, AND WOULD LIKE TO WAIT TO SEE IF THIS REPAIR CAN BE DONE FREE OF CHARGE. IT IS AN ENORMOUS INCONVENIENCE AND MAKES ME FEEL UNSAFE BEHIND THE WHEEL OF MY OWN CAR. *TR
I PURCHASED A USED 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT, IN APRIL, 2009 FOR MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE. ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2010, SHE WAS MAKING A SHARP LEFT TURN, WHEN HER POWER STEERING FAILED TO WORK. SHE STOPPED THE CAR, TURNED IT OFF, AND WHEN SHE RE-STARTED IT, THE POWER STEERING BEGAN WORKING AGAIN. SHE WAS ABOUT 35 MILES FROM HOME, AND HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE IT. I CALLED OUR LOCAL CHEVY DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN REPORTED, AND NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATING. THE POWER STEERING CONTINUED TO SHUT OFF AND ON INTERMEDIATELY MORE THAN 8 OR 10 TIMES OVER THE 35 MILE TRIP. WE TOOK IT TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2010 AND PAID $47.00 FOR A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. IT WAS FOUND THAT STEERING MOTOR IS FAILING. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUED, AND WOULD APPRECIATE A FULL INVESTIGATION BEING CONDUCTED BY YOUR AGENCY. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED AT ONCE, AS THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG COBALT OWNERS, AND, AS I AM SURE YOU REALIZE, IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
CORRECTION TO ODI 10315929. MISTYPE ABOUT ENGINE OVERHEATING - THE ENGINE OVERHEATED DUE TO A CRACKED HEAD GASKET, NOT A CRACKED MANIFOLD. *TR
ON FEBRUARY 26, 2010 AS I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT THE POWER STEERING QUIT FUNCTIONING. I COULD NOT STEER THE CAR. THE MESSAGE "POWER STEERING" APPEARED ON MY DASHBOARD. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED HE RECEIVED COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER COBALT OWNERS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. ON 2/28/10 I CALLED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM. I ASKED IF THERE WAS A RECALL AND TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE WHAT I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC. THE CHEVY REPRESENTATIVE SAID THERE WASN'T A RECALL AT THE TIME. I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT I DID NOT WANT MY RELATIVES TO HAVE TO SUE THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I HAD DIED DUE TO THE POWER STEERING FAILING WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY COBALT. THE REPRESENTATIVE SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO INSPECT THE PROBLEM AND SAID I WOULD HAVE TO PAY A DIAGNOSTICS FEE. ON 3/2/10 THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN AS I WAS DRIVING. FORTUNATELY, I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT. COINCIDENTALLY, WHEN I WENT HOME AND TURNED ON THE TELEVISION I SAW ON THE EVENING NEWS THAT CHEVY COBALTS WERE BEING RECALLED FOR POWER STEERING PROBLEMS. I AM LEARY OF CHEVY DEALERSHIPS. I PURCHASED MY USED 2006 COBALT IN 2008. IT HAD 36,000 MILES ON IT. SOON AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR I NOTICED THE ENGINE KEPT OVERHEATING TO OVER 240 DEGREES. I TOOK MY CAR TO A CHEVY DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES ABOUT THE ENGINE CONSTANTLY OVERHEATING. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS DUE TO THE PLASTIC RADIATOR OVERFLOW BOTTLE LEAKING WHEN IT EXPANDED WHEN WARM. THEY REPLACED THE PLASTICE BOTTLE BUT THE CAR KEPT OVERHEATING. OUT OF FRUSTRATION I TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER REPAIR SHOP. THE OTHER REPAIR SHOP DISCOVERED THAT THE ENGINE OVERHEATED DUE TO A CRACKED MANIFOLD. THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP FAILED TO IDENTIFY THIS AFTER THREE VISITS. I HAVE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE GEAR SHIFT AFTER 36,000 MILES AND A BUSHING AT 69,000 MILES. I AM CURIOUS AS TO WHAT THEY WILL SAY ABOUT THE POWER STEERING FAILURE AT MY APPOINTMENT NEXT WEEK. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE STEERING SYSTEM REPAIRED AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VIN WAS A PART OF THE STEERING RECALL DATED MARCH 1, 2010. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT SHE HAD TO PAY $1500 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT SHE MIGHT NOT BE REIMBURSED AND THE DEALER HAS REFUSED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE UNTIL THEY RECEIVE PAYMENT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 40,000.
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT ALL THE TIME. IT RESETS ITSELF WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF THEN BACK ON. IT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE TURNING, WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE, IT DOESN'T SEEM TO MATTER. IT WASN'T HAPPENING VERY OFTEN, BUT WITHIN THE LAST 2 MONTHS IT IS VERY FREQUENT. WHILE DRIVING CAR YESTERDAY I HEARD A WARNING BEEP..AND POWER STEERING LAMP LIGHT WAS ON DASH, I LOST POWER ASSIST AND HAD HARD TIME STEERING. I HAD TO PULL CAR OVER. TURN OFF IGNITION, RESTARTED CAR AND LIGHT WENT OFF. GOT HOME AND LOOKED ON LINE AND SAW THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT MANY COBALT OWNERS HAVE HAD. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH CHEVROLET [XXX] . AM BRINGING IT TO DEALER FOR EVAL TODAY. HAVE READ OVER 1100 COBALT OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED SAME ISSUE. *TR
I DRIVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT LT AND WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM COLLEGE MY "POWER STEERING" LIGHT FLASHED ON AND MY STEERING WHEEL IMMEDIATELY TIGHTENED UP. I WAS GOING ABOUT 65MPH ON A RT. 202 IN PENNSYLVANIA. I STRUGGLED TO GET OFF OF THE RAMP BECAUSE THE POWER STEERING HAD TIGHTENED UP AND MADE TURNING SO DIFFICULT. I WENT TO PEP BOYS TO GET POWER STEERING FLUID BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING AND ONLY THE MANUFACTURER COULD DO THE REPAIR. MY CAR JUST PASSED 45,000 MILES. I AM VERY UPSET THAT I AM BEING SO INCONVENIENCED WITH THIS BURDEN. I DID NOT PAY ALL THIS MONEY FOR A VEHICLE TO BEGIN TO BREAK DOWN PRIOR 100,000 MILES. WHEN I GOT HOME I WANTED TO LOOK UP HOW MUCH THE WOULD COST ME AND CAME ACROSS MANY OTHER COBALT OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES. I AM SO SHOCKED THAT A RECALL HAS NOT OCCURRED YET. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, I AM AN OWNER OF A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT VIN [XXX] . THE REASON I AM FILING A COMPLAINT IS IN FEBRUARY I HAD A PROBLEM WITH AN INCREDIBLY STRONG GAS ODOR FILLING THE CABIN OF MY CAR AND SO I WENT TO THE DEALER I PURCHASED IT FROM AND THEY FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP MODULE NEEDED REPLACING. THEY DID THE REPAIR WORK AND CHARGED ME A TOTAL OF $558.89 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE PUMP. I AM AWARE THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR 2006 COBALTS FOR FAULTY FUEL PUMP MODULES (RECALL #09226). I TRIED TO GET REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIR WORK SINCE MY VIN IS WELL WITHIN THE RANGE OF RECALLED VEHICLES BUT GM IS CLAIMING I HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO SO. POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO STEER AND MANEUVER. THIS IS A ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE MAY OF 2009. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT AND I AM HAVING PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. I HAVEN'T HAD A ACCIDENT BUT THE STEERING TIGHTENS UP AND BECOMES VERY HARD TO CONTROL. *TR
THERE IS NO CERTAIN EVENT THAT I CAN RECALL THAT LEAD UP TO THE POWER STEERING GOING OUT, ONLY THAT I WAS DRIVING DONE THE ROAD AND IT FELT AS THOUGH THE STEERING WHEEL HAD LOCKED UP AND I IMMEDIATELY HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. PROBABLY A HALF-MILE DOWN THE ROAD THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND HAS STAYED OFF SINCE THEN. WHILE THERE SEEMS TO BE ONLY 1200 OR SO COMPLAINTS THROUGH NHTSA, I HAVE READ PROBLEMS ONLINE THAT GO BACK TO 2007. *TR
2006 COBALT POWER STEERING WENT OUT SUDDENLY. HAD POWER STEERING REPLACED AT CHAMPION CHEVROLET YESTERDAY, 2/26/10. *TR
MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON ME FOR THE FIRST TIME A FEW DAYS AGO WHEN I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF ACCELERATING ON A CURVED RAMP TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. IT CAUSED ME TO RUN OFF THE ROAD AND WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE STEERING AFTER THAT. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT FLASHED ON THE DASHBOARD AND AT THE SOONEST STOPLIGHT I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND THEN THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. IN THE PAST FOUR DAYS SINCE THE PROBLEM BEGAN, THE POWER STEERING HAS FAILED AT LEAST TWICE A DAY. IT SEEMS TO FAIL WHEN I AM ACCELERATING AND/OR TURNING. IT HAS NOT HAPPENED AT SLOW SPEEDS YET - MAINLY ON THE HIGHWAY. IT'S VERY SCARY AND HAS CAUSED ME TO RUN OFF THE ROAD SEVERAL TIMES AND NEARLY SIDESWIPE CARS FROM LOSING CONTROL OF MY CAR IN THE MY LANE. THE SCARIEST PART TO ME IS THE SURPRISE OF THE ONSET. I'VE BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF MAKING A TURN AT EACH FAILURE AND IT CAUSES ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF MY CAR. I AM CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW FOR INFORMATION ON REPAIRING THE PROBLEM. I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2006 CHEVY COBALT LS. IT HAD 83000 MILES ON IT OR CLOSE THERE TO. YESTERDAY I WAS DRIVING WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN TO POWER STEERING WORD CAME ACROSS THE SCREEN. AT THAT TIME MY CAR LOST ALL POWER STEERING. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. IT IS AN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS A RECALL. I CHECKED AND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS. *TR

THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND VIN WERE UNAVAILABLE.
MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT IS HAVING POWER STEERING ISSUES. THE CAR HAS BECOME HARD TO TURN WITH OUT HITTING THE CURB OR ALMOST HITTING OTHER CARS, AS WELL AS PULLING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT AND GETTING OUT OF AN AMBULANCE, FIRE ENGINE, OR POLICE CAR'S WAY. THIS HAS BECOME A CONCERN TO ME AS MANY INEXPERIENCED DRIVERS I KNOW HAVE ONE, BECAUSE IT IS LIKED BY YOUNGER DRIVERS, AND THEY MIGHT NOT KNOW HOW TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT WITH THE POWER STEERING ACTING UP ON THEM. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO CONTINUED DRIVING WITH CAUTION. THERE WAS EXTREME DIFFICULTY TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,000.
PROBLEM WITH POWER STEERING. I DRIVE THE CAR AND I LOSE COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THE CAR, I HAVE TO PULL OVER IN THE 5 SECOND SPAN I GET AND TURN MY CAR OFF AND ON. THIS IS HAPPENING TO ME EVERY SINGLE TIME I START MY CAR, I LOSE CONTROL OVER THE STEERING. THIS PUTS ME AT A GREAT RISK. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY COBALT WHICH FOR THE PAST MONTH AND A HALF I HAVE HAD TWO INCIDENTS OF A POWER STEERING ISSUE. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR GOES ON IN THE DASHBOARD AND I THEN ONLY HAVE MANUAL STEERING. TODAY WAS ONE OF THE DAYS AND ABOUT A MONTH AN A HALF AGO WAS THE OTHER TIME. I AM TAKING THE CAR TO A CHEVY DEALER FOR IT TO BE CHECKED ON MONDAY BUT PREVIOUSLY I HAD IT CHECKED BY A MECHANIC BY MY HOME. THE FIRST TIME WHEN THE MECHANIC CHECKED HE COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. THE STEERING RESET ITSELF. THIS IS DANGEROUS THOUGH BECAUSE IF YOU ARE IN A TURN WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND DO NOT REALIZE THE STEERING IS OUT YOU COULD RUN INTO SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. IS THERE A RECALL ON THIS? I ONLY HAVE 40090 MILES ON THE CAR AND ITS A 2006. I NO LONGER HAVE A WARRANTY BECAUSE MY WARRANTY WAS FOR 36000 MILES SO I HAVE TO PAY FOR WHATEVER IS WRONG WITH IT. IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN DO TO FIND OUT IF THERE IS A RECALL OR GOING TO BE ONE? I WOULD CERTAINLY THINK THAT THIS SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY GM BECAUSE ITS A FACTORY DEFAULT AND NOT WEAR AND TEAR. *TR
1. CAR WAS DRIVEN FROM PARKING SPACE AND WAS ALMOST UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING. 2. FAILURE OCCURRED ONE TIME AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. 3. DEALERSHIP GAVE ME THE OPTION OF REPLACING EITHER THE ELECTRIC STEERING MOTOR OR THE STEERING MOTOR AND THE STEERING COLUMN DUE TO ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS IN THE COLUMN. ONLY THE STEERING MOTOR WAS REPLACED AND THE CAR SEEMS TO DRIVE NORMALLY. *TR
CAR HAS LOST ALL POWER TWICE WHILE IN MOTION. SECOND TIME HAD CAR TOWED TO LOCAL DEALER AND THEY HAD A NEW PROGRAM DOWNLOADED TO THE COMPUTER WHICH CONTROLS THE CAR FUNCTION. SAID IT WAS A SENSOR MIS-READING THE CAR AND HAD TO HAVE THE SOFTWARE REBOOTED. THIS IS TOTALLY UNSAFE FOR A MOVING CAR. ALSO EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH KEY IGNITION LOCK NOT RELEASING THE KEY- DIAGNOSED AS A PROBLEM WITH THE GEAR SHIFTER. MANY PEOPLE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS. THESE ARE BOTH ISSUES THE GM SHOULD OWN UP TO.
POWER STEERING WARNING CAME ON AND WHEEL BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. I WAS ON A CURVE AT THE TIME AND ALMOST WENT INTO A DITCH. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. GM DEALER SAYS THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH MANY, MANY PEOPLE HAVE DESCRIBED STEERING PROBLEMS ON COBALTS. GM SHOULD RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY. *TR
I OWN A 2006 CHEVY COBALT WHICH I PURCHASED ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO. LOVE THE CAR- HOWEVER I'VE HAD AN OCCURRENCE HAPPEN TO ME THREE TIMES NOW WITH THE POWER STEERING. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR HAD APPROX 45,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY (APPROX 55 MPH) AND THE DISPLAY ON THE DASH IN FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL READ "POWER STEERING" AND THE CAR BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND JERK. I PULLED OVER, MADE SOME CALLS, AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. I DROVE TO THE NEAREST DEALER (WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS) AND MADE AN INQUIRY- WE FIRST CHECKED FOR FLUID HOWEVER CAME TO FIND THAT IT IS ELECTRONIC AND WAS TOLD THAT IF I CONTINUED TO HAVE PROBLEMS TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE CAR SCANNED. I DID NOT HAVE ANY MORE PROBLEMS UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. ONLY NOW THE CAR HAS APPROX 80,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO GET THE CAR SCANNED HOWEVER I FELT IT WAS NECESSARY TO FILE A COMPLAINT AS IT COULD HAVE LEAD TO A SAFETY CONCERN FOR PASSENGERS IF AN ACCIDENT HAD OCCURRED. THIS MORNING I ADJUSTED THE STEERING WHEEL HEIGHT AND AGAIN WAS PRESENTED WITH THE "POWER STEERING" ON THE DISPLAY SCREEN PROCEEDED BY JERKING AND LOSS OF POWER ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING AT A LOWER SPEED (25 MPH). I HAVE DONE SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHER COBALTS HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR INCIDENTS. I WOULD SUGGEST AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MATTER AS WELL AS A POSSIBLE RECALL FOR SUCH VEHICLES OR PARTS BEFORE THIS COULD BECOME A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR DRIVERS. ON 2/19/10 WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2006 CHEVY COBALT, HER STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ON HER WHILE SHE WAS MAKING A TURN IN TOWN.. CONTACT A GENERAL MOTORS AND CHEVORLET SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THERE AS A RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING IT HAPPEN EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE UNDER 15-20 MILES A HOUR IT GOES TO MANUAL DRIVING VERY HARD TO TURNTHE STEERING WHEEL AS LONG AS YOUR DRIVING 30-40 MILES IT HAS POWER STEERING, I WAS TOLD THAT CHEVORLET HAS NOT FOUND A WAY TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM AND IT WAS GOING TO A BE RECALLED.
