CAME OUT OF THE STORE WITH MY THREE KIDS IN 25 DEGREE WEATHER, WHEN I GOT INTO MY 2008 COBALT AND I COULDN'T GET THE KEY TO TURN!! THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND CHEVY IS DOING NOTHING TO FIX IT!! MY CAR IS AT THE SHOP AND IT IS GOING TO COST ME $408.00 TO GET FIXED, RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS! *TR
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKES 4 TIMES AND STILL HAVEN'T REPLACED THE FRONT I GET STOCK PADS AND ROTORS FROM CHEVY DEALER! AND WITHIN 500 MILES THE ROTORS ARE ALL SCORED UP AND LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE 20K ON THEM. I SEE THIS BEING A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD FOR SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT REALIZE IT BECAUSE THEY JUST REPLACED THEM! FIX THIS ISSUE PLEASE! I NOTICED THIS FOR THE 4TH TIME ON DECEMBER 1ST. I WAS BACKING UP AND IT MADE A HORRIBLE SOUND I GOT OUT TO CHECK AND THE REAR PADS ARE ALMOST GONE! I HAVE PUT MAYBE 8K ON THEM AND THE ROTORS LOOK LIKE A TIGER ATTACKED THEM, I DON'T BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS AGAIN SO SOON! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE PARKED, THE CONTACT ACTIVATED THE WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER, BUT IT WOULD NOT EMIT SUFFICIENT AIR TO THE WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE BECAUSE THE DEFROSTER WAS FUNCTIONING INTERMITTENTLY WHEN IT WAS INSPECTED. UNABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF STEERING, WHEEL CONTROL OR BRAKING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT FUEL EMITTED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND WAS AWAITING DIAGNOSES. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,950 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34,000.
HANKOOK OPTIMO 725 P205/55R16 TIRES SIDEWALL WITH EXTREME CRACKING! VERY SIMILAR TO THE HANKOOK DYNAPRO RECALL. COBALT HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE, SO MANY CONSUMERS MAY NOT BE EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM OF THIS SORT DUE TO A CAR WITH HIGHER MILEAGE (AND NEEDING A TIRE CHANGE). I HAVE CONTACTED HANKOOK AND MY NEW CAR DEALER (KENNY ROSS CHEVROLET), BUT HAS PROMISED ME NOTHING TO THIS POINT. I AM TERRIFIED OF A BLOW-OUT, AND POSSIBLE BODILY INJURY, DUE TO THE EXTENT OF THE CRACKING SIDEWALLS. ALSO, THESE TIRES ARE LEAKING AIR PRESSURE, WHICH IS A BIG CONCERN THAT IT MAY WELL BE THE VALVE STEM, OR POSSIBLY THE CRACKING OF THE SIDEWALLS. ALL FOUR TIRES ARE CRACKED EXTENSIVELY. *TR
AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING. THE LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD CAME UP "POWER STEERING" SO I WENT TO AN AUTO ZONE WHERE THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIND POWER STEERING FLUID AND IT WAS APPARENTLY AN ELECTRONIC STEERING SYSTEM. I CALLED A DEALER IN TOWN AND THEY LOOKED UP THE VIN AND TOLD ME THAT IT HAD BEEN SERVICED UNDER A RECALL. I THEN CALLED GM AND WAS TOLD THAT GM WOULD NOT COVER THE SERVICE COSTS AGAIN, MOST LIKELY. I WAS ASKED IF I HAD OWNED OTHER GM VEHICLES AND ASKED WHAT THAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT. I WAS NOT GIVEN AN ANSWER BUT THE DEALER THAT I EVENTUALLY TOOK IT TO SAID THAT IT "OF COURSE MATTERS, BECAUSE IF YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT GM IN THE PAST OR WILL NOT IN THE FUTURE WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO HELP YOU?". OBVIOUSLY THEY SHOULD WANT TO HELP ME BECAUSE IT IS A FAULTY PRODUCT AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY. I WAS TOLD BY GM THAT THEY WILL MOST LIKELY ONLY COVER ONCE ON A RECALL WHETHER THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED OR NOT??? I FOUND OUT THE DEALER WHERE THE WORK HAD BEEN DONE AND WENT TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE DEALER TRIED TO TELL ME THAT THERE WAS NO WAY IT COULD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM ON THE RECALL. I TOLD HIM THAT IT WOULD SEEM TO BE COMMON SENSE THAT IT WAS. HE ALSO SAID THAT REGARDLESS, THEIR SERVICE WARRANTY RUNS OUT IN 12 MONTHS AND IT WAS PAST. THEY EVENTUALLY FIXED IT AT NO CHARGE BUT I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT IT WAS FIXED AND THAT IT COULD VERY POSSIBLY GO OUT AT ANY TIME AGAIN. OBVIOUSLY THE RECALL DID NOT FIX ALL OF THE PROBLEMS AND THIS PART CAN FAIL AGAIN AT ANY TIME CAUSING A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
AT RANDOM THE VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY EXHIBIT ESC FAILURE, TRACTION CONTROL FAILURE, AND SEVERAL OTHER TROUBLE CODES WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY LOSING ALL GAUGE FUNCTION AND POWER STEERING. THE ERROR WILL CONTINUE TO ESCALATE CAUSING A MALFUNCTION IN THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL MECHANISM CAUSING GRINDING WHILE TURNING. THE ERROR OFTEN SUBSIDES AFTER SHUTTING THE IGNITION OFF FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 35,300.
FUEL SMELL FUEL LINE CRACKED RIGHT AT FUEL PUMP INLET. SAME PROBLEM AS RECALL #09V41900 2006 2007 COBALTS. THIS IS A FLA. CAR. *KB
I HAVE 2008 CHEVY COBALT AND IT ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT, BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW FROM THE DEALER, LATELY I CAN SMELL GAS BURNING. I TOOK IT TO A SERVICE SHOP AND THEY LIFTED IT UP AND SAID IT WAS LEAKING GAS AND THEY SHOWED ME. I LOOKED ONLINE FOR RECALLS ON THIS CAR AND FOUND IT HAD A LOTS OF RECALLS, EVEN ONE THAT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM MINE HAS(LEAKING GAS), BUT THE YEARS IT HAS ARE BETWEEN 2005-2007. I HAVE 08, BUT I FEEL IT IS THE SAME ISSUE. I KNOW THE DEALER IS GOING TO GIVE ME THE RUN AROUND, BUT I FEEL THEY SHOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM, SO I DON'T HAVE TO PAY THEM X AMOUNT OF THE DOLLARS JUST TO FIND THE PROBLEM AND THEN X2 AMOUNT OF DOLLARS THE FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
FRONT WINDSHIELD KEEPS FOGGING UP, AND NOT DURING ANY CERTAIN TEMPERATURE. DEFROST IS USED TO DISSIPATE PROBLEM HOWEVER IT IS AN ANNOYANCE. WHILE DRIVING ONE RAINY EVENING I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THIS CONDITION, AND I CONSIDER HAVING GOOD NIGHT VISION. *TR
LATE 2011 MY CAR STARTING HAVING ISSUES WITH THE RPMS GOING UP AND DOWN WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT A STEADY PACE. BY DEC 2011 MY CAR SMELLED LIKE IT HAD A SMALL FUEL LEAK; ONE THAT I COULD ONLY SMELL WHILE MY CAR WAS IDLING. SINCE FEBRUARY 2012 THE SMELL OF GASOLINE HAS GONE FROM A FAINT SMELL WHILE IDLING TO AN ALMOST UNBEARABLE SMELL THAT I CAN SMELL EVEN DOING 70+ MPH ON THE FREEWAY. WITH THE FUEL LINES NOT ALLOWING ENOUGH FUEL TO BE PUMPED INTO MY ENGINE IT ALSO DOES NOT LIKE TO START IF IT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR MORE THAN A FEW HOURS. I HAVE TO TURN THE KEY LET THE ENGINE TURN OVER A FEW TIMES, LET IT SIT, THEN ATTEMPT TO START IT UP AGAIN. CHEVY HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR COBALT'S SINCE THEY HAVE STARTED MAKING THEM IT SEEMS. THEY HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM WITH THE 2008'S THEY HAVE JUST CHOSEN TO IGNORE THAT OUR CARS HAVE THIS ISSUE AS WELL. WHEN I CALL THE DEALERSHIP THEY TELL ME THAT THE 2008 MODELS DO NOT HAVE THE ISSUE THAT THE EARLIER MODELS HAD, BUT THEY ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM FOR ME AT A COST OF $150 AND THEY CAN FIX IT AT DOUBLE THE PRICE ANYWHERE ELSE BECAUSE THEY ARE A DEALERSHIP. NO THANK YOU! I WILL NOT PAY CHEVY TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT THEY HAVE CAUSED AND REFUSE TO FIX. I DO KNOW THAT I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER CHEVY ONCE I AM ABLE TO GET RID OF THIS CAR. *TT

THE SECOND OCCASION, THE STEERING WHEEL COULD NOT BE TURNED WITHOUT CALLING A MECHANIC IN. PARENTS BOUGHT CAR FOR COMMUTING COLLEGE STUDENT . MILEAGE IS APPROXIMATELY 80,000. *TR

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE CHROME WAS PEELING OFF FROM BOTH DOOR HANDLES ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE FAILURE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRONT SWAY BAR END WAS LOOSE BECAUSE IT WAS WORN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000. UPDATED 11/17/11 *BF UPDATED 11/30/11
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE BECAME HARD TO STEER AND THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE ISSUE WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO INSPECTED VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE RACK AND PINION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 59,000.
NOTICED A FAINT SMELL OF GAS WHILE DRIVING MY COBALT ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2011. GAS SMELL GREW STRONGER LATER IN THE DAY AND, ON FRIDAY, WAS SO STRONG THAT IT WAS OVERPOWERING, EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN. UPON TAKING MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC, THEY FOUND THAT A PLASTIC SUPPLY PORT ON THE MODULAR RESERVOIR OF MY FUEL PUMP HAD CRACKED AND IT WAS CREATING A SEVERE FUEL LEAK. I HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP IN ORDER TO FIX THIS SITUATION, BUT, THREE DAYS LATER, MY CAR STILL HAS AN EXISTING GAS SMELL TO IT. ON FRIDAY WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED, I FELT LIKE I HAD INGESTED GASOLINE ALL DAY, AND IT TOOK A WHILE FOR THAT FEELING TO GO AWAY. IN ADDITION, I KNOW THAT GAS LEAKS ARE POTENTIALLY VERY HAZARDOUS AND CAN START FIRES. IN CONDUCTING RESEARCH, IT SEEMS THAT THIS PROBLEM IS CONSISTENT WITH RECALL ID # 09V419000 DATED 10/29/2009 IN WHICH 2006 AND 2007 YEAR CHEVROLET COBALTS WERE RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN SOME STATES INCLUDING ARIZONA, WHERE MY CAR WAS PURCHASED AND REGISTERED. SERVICE MEMBERS AT A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP HAVE STATED THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BECOME COMMON WITH MY YEAR COBALTS, SO PERHAPS THE 2008 COBALTS SHOULD BE RECALLED AS WELL? THIS IS A HAZARDOUS PROBLEM THAT HAS TURNED IN TO QUITE AN EXPENSIVE FIX FOR ME, AND I BELIEVE THAT IT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF IMMEDIATELY. *KB
SINCE SEPTEMBER 2011 I HAVE NOTICED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN FUEL EFFICIENCY. THE FUEL EFFICIENCY HAS GOTTEN WORSE SINCE THEN. I NOW GET ABOUT 12 MILES TO THE GALLON. TIRES ARE CHECKED AND I USE FUEL WITH NO ETHANOL. I HAVE SEEN RECALLS ON THE 2007 MODELS FOR THE FUEL PUMP AND WHY NOT FOR THE 2008 MODEL? THIS HAS BECOME A FINANCIAL NIGHTMARE. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN LOUISIANA WHERE I LIVE. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE THERMOSTAT BECAME INOPERABLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
THE REAR BRAKES CLUNKED AND SQUEAKED. TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN NOVEMBER 2011. THEY REPLACED THE PADS AND TURNED THE ROTORS. SINCE THE CAR WAS TWO MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY THE CHARGE WAS 307.40. WITHIN 30 DAYS THE BRAKES STARTED MAKING THE NOISE AGAIN BUT NOT AS OFTEN OR AS LOUD. THE SOUND HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND MORE OFTEN. INSTEAD OF A SQUEAK THERE IS NOW AN EXTREMELY LOUD GRINDING NOISE WHEN STOPPING, PARTICULARLY WHEN THERE IS MOISTURE PRESENT. THE BRAKE PADS STILL HAVE PLENTY OF MATERIAL ON THEM AND THE ROTORS ARE SMOOTH. THE NOISE IS DEAFENING IN PARKING GARAGES AND CAN EASILY BE HEARD 1/8TH OF A MILE AWAY. STOPPING DISTANCE HAS INCREASED AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT FEEL SAFE. *KB
REAR BRAKE ROTORS ARE IRREPARABLY SCORED AND WARPED AFTER 11,000 MILES, PREVENTING THE REAR BRAKES FROM WORKING CORRECTLY AND DECREASING BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS. THIS IS COMMON ON 2008 COBALT SSES. *TR

THE POWER STEERING FAILED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE ANY TURNS OR CHANGE LANES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. I GOT A BROKEN I SHAFT AFTER MULTIPLE TIME GOIN TO DEALER AN TELLING ME I WAS A WOMEN AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. *TR
THIS IS A 3 YEAR OLD 2008 GM COBALT WITH LESS THAN 35,000 MILE. I WAS OUT RUNNING ERRANDS 7/18/11. I DROVE IN TO PARKING SPOT AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN MY CAR OFF. THE KEY DID NOT TURN TO TURN THE CAR OFF NOR COULD I REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. I DROVE MY CAR TO GM DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE IGNITION CYLINDER NEEDED REPLACEMENT. I WAS SURPRISED BECAUSE THE CAR IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD AND I HAD NO OTHER PROBLEM. I HAVE OWNED TWO OTHER CARS, ONE FOR 10 YRS AND ONE FOR 11 YRS NEVER AT ANY TIME DID I HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH GETTING THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION OR PROBLEMS TURNING MY CAR OFF. I BELIEVE THAT THE IGNITION CYLINDER WAS DEFECTIVE AND SO I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR A DEFECTIVE PART TO BE REPLACED. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER MY COMPLAINT. *TR

MILEAGE, ABOUT 21,000 MILES, OUT OF WARRANTY. IGNITION LOCK SEIZED WHILE DRIVING. COULD NOT TURN OFF. WENT TO DEALER, WHO PERFORMED A "COURTESY" REPAIR. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED AT NIGHT OR OVER THE WEEKEND, WOULD HAVE HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHEN AS THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 46,950. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,946.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND STOPPED. UPON RESTART, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO DRIVE AS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
MY 2008 CHEVY COBALT LT WON'T TURN OFF THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION AND WON'T COME OUT OR TURN OFF. I WENT TO THE DEALER SHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH COBALTS PRIOR TO THIS AND IT'S THE CYLINDER IGNITION. THEY SAID THAT IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY AND IT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED, BUT IF IT HAPPENS SO MUCH WHY HAVEN'T THEY DONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT YET. IF PEOPLE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS THEN WHY ISN'T THIS TAKING CARE OF? I DO NOT HAVE 300 PLUS DOLLARS TO PUT INTO MY CAR. TO FIX IT. THEY TOLD ME I COULD DRIVE IT LIKE THAT TIL I COULD FIX IT ALL I HAD TO DO WAS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TERMINAL UNTIL I WAS READY TO USE THE CAR. WHEN I DID THAT AND WENT TO TURN THE CAR BACK ON BY BATTERY IT SAID ENERGY POWER REDUCED AND MY CAR WON'T EVEN START NOW. WHEN I CALLED TO THEM THIS THEY SAID OH YOUR THROTTLE BODY WENT BAD. BUT THEY WERE THE ONES WHO TOLD ME I COULD DO THIS. NOW I HAVE NO CAR TO DRIVE AND THEY SAID IT WOULD BE 300 PLUS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AS WELL. SO NOW IM LOOKING AT OVER 600 DOLLARS TO FIX MY CAR WHICH I DO NOT HAVE. *TR

TRANSMISSION MODULE FAILURE LEADS TO TEMPORARY POWER STEERING FAILURE. WHILE DRIVING MY 2008 CHEVY COBALT, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER STARTED MALFUNCTIONING. THE SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER, AND FUEL GAUGE ALL STARTED BOUNCING AROUND ERRATICALLY. THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER STARTED FLASHING "POWER STEERING". THIS ALL TOOK PLACE WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY AY ABOUT 60 MPH. AS I WAS TRYING TO PULL TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I THOUGHT THE POWER STEERING PUMP WENT OUT. AFTER GETTING THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURNING IT OFF I CALLED MY MECHANIC. HE TOLD ME HE HEARD OF THIS BEFORE AND TOLD ME TO RESTART THE CAR. I DID AND EVERYTHING WAS BACK TO NORMAL. I DROVE STRAIGHT TO HIS SHOP WHERE HE PLUGGED IN HIS DIAGNOSTIC CHECK COMPUTER. HE TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE TRANSMISSION MODULE AND IS A WELL KNOW PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY COBALT.
