TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 CHEVROLET COBALT. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TOOK CAR TO DEALER ON GM IGNITION SWITCH RECALL; THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR MECHANICALLY WHEN THEY TOOK POSSESSION. THEY HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT 6 WEEKS , THEY MOVED IT AROUND ON THEIR LOT BY THEIR OWN ADMISSION, DID A REQ OIL CHANGE AND WHEN WE WENT TO PICK UP THEY HAD LOST THE KEYS. WHEN THEY AGREED TO MAKE NEW KEYS, THEY COULD NOT GET THE AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCK TO WORK AND AFTER NOW 6 MONTHS OF DISCUSSIONS THEY STILL WONT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY ALTHOUGH A SECOND DEALERSHIP HAS LOOKED AT IT AND SAYS "THEY MUST HAVE SHORTED OUT THE SYSTEM CHANGING THE IGNITION OR PROGRAMMING THE KEYS" .. I NEED HELP GETTING THEM TO FIX THE LOCKS. *TR

THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE AND THE KEY WOULD NOT TURN FROM AN OFF TO AN ON POSITION IN ORDER TO START THE VEHICLE. THE KEY WAS UNABLE TO BE REMOVED. THE DEALER WAS UNCERTAIN WHEN THE PART WOULD BE AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.

UPDATED 09/15/14*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE KEY WAS UNABLE TO BE RELEASED FROM THE IGNITION. THE DEALERSHIP SUGGESTED THAT THE CONSUMER PUT HER FINGER INTO A SMALL DOOR BY THE STEERING WHEEL TO ACCESS A SWITCH THAT WOULD RELEASE THE KEY. THE CONSUMER REFUSED FOR FEAR OF BEING ELECTROCUTED. CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP TOOK POSSESSION OF CAR BEGINNING OF JUNE WITH NOTHING WRONG TO APPEARANCE OR MECHANICALLY ; JULY 18 THEY CALL SAYING THE CAR IS READY TO BE PICKED UP FROM THE WORK ON THE RECALL ISSUE FOR IGNITION SWITCHES. FIRST THEY ONLY WANTED TO GIVE US ONE SINGLE KEY WHEN WE GAVE THEM TWO WITH THE ELEC REMOTES; HOUR LATER THEY PRODUCE 2 KEY/ 2 REMOTES AND APOLOGIZE THAT THEY APPARENTLY LOST THE KEYS AS THEY HAD MOVED THE CAR AROUND MULTIPLE TIME OVER LAST 2 MONTHS....THEN WHEN KEY WILL ONLY START THE CAR AND THE REMOTES DON'T WORK AND DOOR LOCKS CANNOT BE LOCKED OR UNLOCKED; THEY TOLD US TO SCHEDULE TO BRING IT BACK TO PAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED! THE RECALL WAS ON THE IGNITION WHICH WE WERE TOLD REQUIRED THEY REPLACE IT / MAKE NEW KEYS AND PROGRAM THEM TO THE CAR AND THE DOORS.....THEY DID NOT: DEALERSHIP WAS VERY RUDE SAYING CAR IS OLD ANDMUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING ELSE WRONG WITH IT..THERE WAS NOT ! AND THAT SOMEONE HAD "SCREWED WITH AND TAKEN OFF A PANEL ON THE COLUMN"..WE NEVER WORK ON OUR OWN CARS. THIS CAR WAS PREVIOUSLY WORKED ON BY ANOTHER CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND THEY SWITCHED OUT THE IGNITION SWITCH BECAUSE OUR SERVICE REP THERE HAD HEARD OF A LOT OF PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTED IT; THIS LATEST REPAIR, WE WERE TOLD TO HAVE IT DONE AGAIN AS THEY DIDN'T KNOW IF THE RIGHT PARTS WERE USED WHEN IT WAS WORKED ON BEFORE. I EXP ALL THAT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SERVICE MANAGER ADV THEM THEY COULD CALL OR GO ON THEIR SITES ETC AND SEE WHAT WORK WAS DONE ON THIS CAR. THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE IF THEY LEAVE IT WHERE THE DOORS CANNOT BE LOCKED. MY DAUGHTER IS ONE WHO DRIVES THIS AND IS 4 HOURS AWAY FROM HOME AT COLLEGE IN WASHINGTON DC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STARTED EXHIBITING THIS PROBLEM AFTER BEING REPAIRED UNDER RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V047000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 209,000.
I HAVE HAD MY CAR SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING 3 TIMES IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS. WHEN I ORIGINALLY CONTACTED SOMEONE AT DEALER, WAS TOLD MY YEAR NOT AFFECTED. I NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION THAT I WAS AFFECTED BUT CONTACTED GM AFTER HEARING ON THE NEWS OTHERWISE. I WAS TOLD THEY CONTACTED DEALER ON MY BEHALF AND DIDN'T GET EXPECTED "FIX" DATE. I CONTACTED AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER AND TOLD THEM OF MY SITUATION- I NEED TO MOVE OUT OF STATE TO COLORADO ON AUGUST 11TH AND THIS IS MY ONLY CAR. I HAVE BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH THEM BECAUSE I NEED A VEHICLE I FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE AND DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR, BECAUSE IT HAS SHUT OFF DUE TO IGNITION SWITCH 3 TIMES, LUCKILY ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS. FINALLY, SOMEONE SAID THAT I COULD HAVE A RENTAL BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WAY THE CAR COULD BE DEEMED SAFE TO DRIVE 20 HOURS ON HIGHWAY WITH THIS HISTORY, BUT THEY STILL WANT ME TO PAY THE COST TO SHIP FIXED CAR AND ALL RENTAL EXPENSES UNTIL SHIPPED CAR ARRIVES, WHICH I DO NOT FEEL IS FAIR, AS THESE ARE COSTS INCURRED TO ME THAT WOULD NOT OTHERWISE INCURRED IF I DIDN'T HAVE THIS DEFECTIVE SWITCH. I DO NOT KNOW IF I HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER THIS SHIPPING COST, WHICH IS WHY I AM DRIVING TO DENVER IN FIRST PLACE TO START A NEW JOB, AND MAY HAVE TO PASS OFFER FOR RENTAL AND CHANCE DRIVING. I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY I WAS ATTEMPTING TO JUST BACK UP AND TURN AROUND I NO SOONER PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND JUST TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL WHEN THEY CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT STOP AND CRASHED INTO A ANOTHER FAMILY CAR WAS BEHIND ME AND BACKED INTO IT HARD. MY "SERVICE AIR BAG" MESSAGE CAME ON TODAY WHILE DRIVING AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS NOW ILLUMINATED ON MY DASH PANEL. CAME ONLINE TO FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND APPARENTLY IT'S A WIDELY KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CHEVY COBALT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY WANT A LOT OF MONEY TO FIX THIS SAFETY PROBLEM. GM EVEN ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT IT BUT MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. ISN'T THIS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE A RECALL? *JS

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START IMMEDIATELY AND WHEN THE IGNITION WAS RELEASED, THE VEHICLE WOULD SOUND AS IF IT STARTED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE WAS FUEL LEAK. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT WHEN THE IGNITION WAS IN THE ON POSITION THE FUEL PUMP GENERATED FUEL CAUSING IT TO FAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN: 12V459000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE) WAS NOT A VALID RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MPH, ANOTHER DRIVER PULLED IN FRONT OF HER AND SHE TRIED TO AVOID A CRASH AS A RESULT ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE CONTACT AND THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A BRIDGE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A TRAFFIC SIGN, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO TURN AND THE STEERING WHEEL CONTINUE TO SPIN UNCONTROLLABLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO VERIFIED THAT THE STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
LETTER FROM SENATOR GRAHAM ON BEHALF OF CONSTITUENT RE GM VEHICLE RECALL. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED ON JULY 1, 2014. THE CONSUMER STATED HE IS NOW HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE REPLACEMENT IGNITION SWITCH. GM AND THE DEALER, INFORMED THE CONSUMER, HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY $ 125 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. *JB

I HAVE NOTICED SINCE 06/20/2014 THAT I HAVE BEEN SMELLING GAS FUMES COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP AREA OF MY VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CHEVY COBALTS HAD RECALLS ON SOME MODELS, INCLUDING 2008, IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE US. WHEN I CALLED TO GET AN APPT WITH THE ALL STAR CHEVY IN BAKER, LOUISIANA TO REPAIR THE RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH THEY TOLD ME THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT A FUEL PUMP RECALL. IM VERY CONCERNED AND AGITATED THAT I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTICE OF ANY SUCH RECALLS AND THEN TO BE TOLD BY A CHEVY THAT THERE WAS NO RECALLS CONCERNING FUEL ISSUES. *TR

WAS GOING STRAIGHT AT 35MPH...SPEED LIMIT IN AREA IS 40 ANOTHER CAR TURNED DIRECTLY INTO DRIVER FRONT NEAR DOOR HINGE, CAR WENT HEAD ON INTO A STREET SIGN AND MY SHOULDER HIT THE STEERING WHEEL CAUSING A LARGE AMOUNT OF PAIN AND BRUISING, NO POWER LOSS TO THE CAR BUT BOTH SIDE AND FRONT AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *TR
DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL ROAD AT LESS THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR. ALL OF A SUDDEN WITHOUT ANY WARNING, EVERYTHING WENT HAYWIRE: I GOT A LOW FUEL WARNING EVEN THOUGH THE TANK WAS HALF-FULL, MYRIAD WARNING LIGHTS FLASHED, THE TACHOMETER NEEDLE MOVED ERRATICALLY, I LOST POWER STEERING, AND THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING VERY ROUGHLY. I PULLED OVER AND STOPPED THE CAR, REMOVED AND REINSERTED THE KEY, AND RESTARTED THE CAR. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. ALL WITHOUT THE CAR KEY ATTACHED TO A KEY CHAIN - GM'S PROPOSED SOLUTION UNTIL NEW PARTS CAN BE INSTALLED FOR THE RECALL. I DROVE THE CAR A HALF-MILE BACK TO MY HOME AND SHUT IT OFF. I RESTARTED THE CAR SEVERAL MINUTES LATER AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE - THE ONLY LINGERING SYMPTOM WAS A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I DROVE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT DAY. AS YET (2 DAYS LATER), THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM. THEY SAY THEY'RE STILL UNSURE WHETHER IT'S RELATED TO THE RECALL. I REGISTERED MY CAR FOR THE RECALL OVER 3 WEEKS AGO BUT THE DEALERSHIP HASN'T RECEIVED THE REPLACEMENT PART YET. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT DURING THE CRASH, THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE DRIVER SUFFERED A CONCUSSION, A NECK INJURY AND LACERATIONS TO THE HANDS AND FACE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. MY 21 YEAR OLD SONS CAR IS ON THE RECALL 14V047 AND 14V171. I GOT A LETTER SEVERAL MONTHS BACK THAT IT WAS ON RECALL AND OF COURSE IT IS ON THE NEWS. I GOT 2ND LETTER YESTERDAY. WHEN I CALLED LAKESIDE CHEVROLET IN ROCKWALL I WAS GIVEN A VM FOR THESE RECALLS AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD ORDER THE PART AND IT COULD TAKE UP TO 90 DAYS. MY CONCERN IS 2 YEARS AGO THIS WAS A RECALL. WE WENT TO JUPITER CHEVROLET IN GARLAND AND THEY SAID OH NO IGNITION IS FINE ITS HIS KEY. AT THAT TIME WAS A "POSSIBLE RECALL". THEY MADE HIM A NEW KEY AND CHARGED HIM $39.00. AT THAT TIME WHEN HE WENT IN YOU HAD TO SHAKE COLUMN AROUND TO GET KEY TO WORK. I AM NOW THINKING WITH ALL THE DEATHS SHOULDN'T THAT CAR BE RECALLED AND SHOULDN'T THEY BE HURRYING TO GET THEM FIXED INSTEAD OF WAITING 90 DAY. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS SITUATION. *TR

ON TWO SEPERATE ACCOUNTS, AS I MADE A RIGHT TURN AT A STOP LIGHT, THE STEERING LOCKED MID TURN CAUSING ME TO PROCEED INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. THIS COBALT HAS ALREADY HAD A RECALL ON THE POWER STEERING ASSIST IN 2010. I HAVE HAD THE CHEVROLET DEALER SHIP RUN A DIAGNOSTICS ON THE CAR AND THEY HAVE CONFIRMED 3 THINGS. THE ISSUE IS WITH THE POWER STEERING ASSIST, THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE AS THE CAR IS DRIVEN MORE AND IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND ALSO THAT THIS IS NOT WEAR AND TEAR AND THAT THERE IS NOTHING PREVENTATIVE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO PREVENT THIS OTHER THAN REPLACING THE STEERING GEAR BOX ENTIRELY. GM HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS ISSUE WE ARE HAVING AND CLAIMS THAT WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS FIX ENTIRELY BECAUSE THE FACTORY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. I HAVE ASKED THEM TO CONSIDER THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND HELP ME FIX THIS ISSUE AND THEY HAVE NOT CHANGED THEIR POSITION. IN JUNE 2014 I RETURNED MY 2008 COBALT TO RELIABLE CHEVROLET IN SPRINGFIELD, MO FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL. THE" SERVICE AIR BAG" LIGHT HAD BEEN ON FOR THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS. I HAD CONTACTED A CHEVROLET DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND INQUIRED ABOUT MY CONCERNS. I WAS ADVISED "THERE WAS NO SERVICE AIR BAG" PROCEDURES THAT WERE SERVICEABLE ON THE AIR BAGS. WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE CHEVROLET DEALER TO HAVE THE IGNITION RECALL PERFORMED, I SPECIFICALLY ASKED ABOUT THE SERVICE AIR BAG LIGHT AND WAS ADVISED THERE WAS NO RECALL ON AIR BAGS. I HAVE SEEN RECALL INFORMATION ON THE LOCAL NEWS CONCERNING A RECALL THAT INCLUDED THE AIR BAG. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN GM'S HANDLING OF THE FEBRUARY 10 AND APRIL 10, 2014 RECALLS OF 2008 CHEVROLET COBALTS. I AM A 2008 COBALT OWNER, AND I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED A LETTER NOR HAS MY UNCLE WHO IS THE REGISTERED OWNER. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED BUT DO NOT FEEL THAT IS AN ADEQUATE EXCUSE FOR NOT BEING NOTIFIED OF THIS RECALL. I WAS NOT ABLE TO ORDER THE DESIGNATED PARTS FOR REPAIR UNTIL 3 DAYS AGO, AS THE DEALERSHIP I CONTACTED IN REGARDS TO THE PROBLEM DID NOT GET BACK TO ME. I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS RECALL IS A SITUATION TO MAKE LIGHT OF. PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM THIS DEFICIENCY IN THE VEHICLE, AND I WAS NEVER EVEN INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF MY AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY CAR AND I DO NOT FEEL SECURE KNOWING THAT WITHOUT MY TAKING THE INITIATIVE TO INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM, I WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN THAT MY CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED. I ALSO FEEL THAT MY AIR BAGS, STEERING AND ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHOULD BE TESTED AND REPLACED IF THERE IS EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE THAT THEY HAVE BE INEFFECTIVE. I LOSE POWER STEERING IF MY IGNITION SWITCH FAILS, IN ADDITION TO MY AIR BAGS FAILING, FURTHER COMPROMISING MY SAFETY. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THESE DEFECTS ON MY VEHICLE, AS I HAVE NO OTHER FORM OF TRANSPORTATION BACK AND FORTH TO WORK ETC., AND THE LENGTH OF TIME IT IS TAKING FOR IT TO BE REPAIRED. OUR VEHICLE WAS SUBJECT TO THE RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SYSTEM. WE CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND WERE TOLD THAT WE NEEDED TO WAIT FOR THE PARTS TO COME IN FIRST. AFTER WAITING 8+ WEEKS WE WERE TOLD THE PARTS WERE IN AND WE MADE AN APPOINTMENT AND DROPPED THE VEHICLE OFF. WHEN WE WENT TO PICK UP OUR VEHICLE WE WERE TOLD THAT A VEHICLE, WITH THE SAME VIN # WAS ALREADY REPAIRED IN ILLINOIS. WE LIVE IN NJ AND OUR VEHICLE WAS NEVER IN IL. THE MAINTENANCE MANAGER (FREEHOLD CHEVY) AGREED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER REPAIRED BY LOOKING AT THE IGNITION SWITCH. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE VIN # ISSUE NEEDED TO BE CORRECTED BEFORE THEY CAN WORK ON OUR CAR. IT'S NOW 6+ WEEKS LATER AND OUR FOLLOW UP PHONE CALLS HAVE NOT BROUGHT US ANY CLOSER TO HAVING THE REPAIR DONE. I BELIEVE THE REPAIR SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE SINCE THEY COULD TELL THE PARTS WERE NEVER REPLACED ON OUR VEHICLE AND THE VIN # SHOULD HAVE BEEN RESOLVED BETWEEN THE DEALERSHIPS. *TR
