NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
2015 Chevy Colorado power steering has been going out while driving, often on the highway. very hard to steer/turn. several times have to try to put truck in neutral, turn off the truck, turn it back on to get it to come back on... all while doing 65-70mph on the highway. I took it to my mechanic last night, and today I'm told, there has been a recall issued for this issue. Call GM and talk to them. I do, and am told after giving VIN, for whatever reasons, my specific truck is not included in the recall - and yet I fight with the wheel trying not to run off the road or slam into someone else as I try to pull over - which is what this safety recall is all about. All out of pocket expense to me and am told, by GM, even if they do later include my truck in this recall for this problem, they could reimburse me but I most likely won't get reimbursed due to age of the truck and now it has 110,000 k miles on it. WHAT?! I'm sure this is a common type of problem with recalls but for those of us who are on tight income, this is highly stressful and a major problem - for dealing with the car itself and feeling screwed over by the company/laws/whatever excuse they want to say. Truck is now in the shop and going to get fixed cause I don't want to freaking die while driving and somehow I have to figure out how to pay the thousands of dollars to fix it.
Power steering assist is occasionally lost and makes vehicles hard to manuver. If the car is turned off and restarted the problem is momentarily fixed but happens again at random.
Power steering failed several times. Last 2 incidents were at highway speeds. Their is a bulletin on this issue but no recall. Have to shut off vehicle and restart to clear issue. Dash displays power steering failure warning and to drive carefully.
My power steering system failed again while driving. The car became very difficult to control, especially at low speeds, and poised a safety concern for myself and drivers around me. I had it inspected, the service center recreated the issue and confirmed the electrical connections have failed, as outlined in the recall cited below. The year, make, model and issue is the same as the information included in campaign 21V213000, however Chevrolet refuses to include my VIN in the list of recalled vehicles.
The power steering system stopped working while the vehicle was in motion. The issue is identical to the issue noted under campaign 21V213000, and effects a 2015 model year vehicle, however my VIN was not included in the recall
Power steering went out, impossible to steer, no warning, able to force off road. H ad happened several times before at intervals would return after several minutes of car motor off. Saw at dealership originally but no answer found till yesterday when it happened again. Dealer" internal fault with steering gear".
Lost power steering twice in while traveling 70mph on interstate highway. Specifically, I lost power steering and got lights for loss of "Stabilitrak." I had to pull over to turn off the truck, and power steering returned upon turning back on the vehicle. No loss of power steering fluid was noted. This incident repeated itself exactly the same several days later. Upon taking to the mechanic, they confirmed with the following: "We've confirmed an intermittent issue with the power steering, identified by the retrieval of the C0545 code for the steering torque sensor. Upon conducting a thorough data test, we observed erratic signals from the steering wheel torque sensor. We meticulously inspected all connections, finding no issues. Furthermore, our testing revealed that the torque sensor circuits are not shorted to power or ground, and there are no instances of resistance or opens. We recommend replacing and programming the electronic steering gear assembly, as the steering torque sensor is integrated into it." Final repairs and replacement of the steering gear assembly cost approximately $2500.00
Had 3 instances of loss of power steering while driving, first time at 5-10 mph, 4/2/2024, then on way home 2 times speeds approx. 45 mph. When checked with a vehicle diagnostic machine it was learned that I had a Loss Of Power Steering Assist. I was then informed that there was a recall for the same problem in 2021, however the recall was VIN specific, and my VIN was not part of the recall, yet it is the same problem. Extreme safety hazard and I've been quoted a fix/repair will cost approx. $3,500.00. Local dealership advised me to contact GM, who then advised me to contact NHTSA. Frustrating that there was a recall, and the publication does not show VIN specificity, recall # N202325410-01. Is there any chance of getting my VIN included added to the recall VIN's that were experiencing same problem and fixed.Thank you
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at 10-45 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was a loss of power steering due to fault codes in the transfer control module, power steering control module, and front view camera module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 106,266.
Power steering failure stabilitrak failure at 144,000 miles.
This issue has been fixed two times already and the issue is still occurring. Power steering quits working while driving anywhere. Service power steering warning light comes on. I shut off the engine and then restarted the engine and power steering was restored. Sometimes this worked. Now I have lost all power steering completely. Because the vehicle has been fixed prior, I have to pay to have the parts replaced again.
Power steering quit while driving on highway. Service power steering warning came on. Pulled off to shoulder and stopped. Shut off engine then looked under hood but couldn't find anything obvious. Restarted engine and steering restored. About 3 miles from home and lost steering again making vehicle very hard to control.
Repeatedly losing power steering while driving. A recall for this problem has been issued but for some reason my vin falls outside of the recalled vehicles. This is dangerous and frustrating as the the failure exactly matches the recall description!
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the power steering function became inoperable. The contact was able to veer the vehicle to the shoulder prior to having the vehicle towed to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with power steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
my truck lost steering 3 times already and i brought to dealership twice with them telling it can't be fixed! first tine jan of 2024 and also jan of this year
The power steering assist fails mid turn. Creates safety issue when turning in parking lots and yielding turns.
While driving at highway speeds the power steering suddenly stopped working. It was definitely a safety hazard as I had all I could do to get off the road!
Sluggish or chattering, shaking transmission, at slow speeds.
Riding in Mtns and power steering light came on and lost all power steering
Random loss of power steering while vehicle is moving. Pulling over, shutting truck off and restarting usually clears up the issue. Previous recall number is 21V213. My truck does not qualify for this recall but is now having this issue.
Electrical power steering goes out at random moments. Could be driving down highway, could be sitting in park. Power steering goes out, service stabiltrak message comes up, as well as traction control out message comes up. There have been recalls for other 2015 Chevy Colorado's for power steering but mine doesn't qualify?
My 2015 Colorado is repeatedly losing power steering. Twice while driving and three times upon starting the vehicle the power steering has failed. A warning light shows on the instrument panel to service the power steering. After parking and restarting the truck I have been able to resume driving. This is a VERY FRIGHTENING AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. I learned there was a partial recall of SOME 2015 Colorados, however my truck was not included. I have an appointment with my local Chevy dealer on Monday, August 28.
While driving at any speed I lose steering assistance through electronic steering. Which makes steering very difficult. A warning comes on the dash, warning of Dangerous conditions
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact previously received notification of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V054000 (Steering), and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the recall repair was completed; however, while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel became stiff and difficult to maneuver. The power steering assist warning light illuminated. The contact turned off the vehicle, then opened and closed the driver’s side door and the steering wheel started to perform as designed. The contact stated that the front driver’s and passenger’s side low beam and the rear passenger’s side taillight failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering rack had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that a percentage of the repair cost would be covered. The failure mileage was approximately 110,372.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the messages "Service Power Steering" and "Service Stabili-trac" were displayed. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 92,000.
I lost Power Steering while traveling on an interstate. Luckily at the speed I was traveling it wasn't difficult to steer the vehicle. Once I reached my destination and at a slower speed it was extremely difficult to turn. I turned off the engine and restarted and then it was fine. But the incident has happened about 5 other times at a slower speed. The vehicle is very difficult to steer when making turns. Each turn I was lucky there was not another vehicle in the opposite lane. Otherwise I could have crashed. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they had no detail of which vehicle were involved in service bulletin 15595B. The gave me an 800# to call and was told that my vehicle was not involved. It is obvious that my vehicle should had been included. The bulletin is very vague to the dealer and the consumer. It just reads "certain vehicle".
stabilitrak Issues resulting in the loss of power steering
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving at 55 MPH, she became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, and the vehicle displayed a message reading "Electronic Power Assist Fault". The EPS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that power to the EPS was lost due to a fault with the battery. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who then diagnosed a failure with the electronic power steering assist. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V054000 (Steering) but had already been repaired under the recall and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 85,000.
Power steering cuts out and stability track are not working
Unknown other than I requested Vernon Chevrolet in CT repair my recall on January 2, 2023 but have yet to hear back
I lost power steering while driving the truck. My safety was put at risk because I lost power steering in a curve without warning. I have not had a chance to take it into a dealer yet but this has happened twice. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone yet. No warnings prior to losing the power steering just went out all of a sudden.
Power steering keeps cutting out as well as stabilitrak, after supposedly being fixed under the 2015 recall. Original recall wasn't even done properly according to the recall informational sheet. Second recall in 2021, I never received any recall letters, now dealership are saying I am out of recall warranty and want me to replace the entire steering rack assembly instead of just the torque sensor cover as stated in the revised 2021 recall, this is an inherent safety issue that has been recalled multiple times now so it should be covered or at least replaced properly.
Was in a drive thru line luckily, was pulling out to leave and light came up on dash reading “Service power steering, drive with care.” The steering wheel would barely budge. Luckily drove off to side and turned car off. Waiting a few seconds and the light went off and everything was working like normal again. This was actually the second time in a week this happened. The other time was pulling out of my driveway, so I have been lucky where this has happened. I saw some vehicles have been recalled for this, but not mine for some reason and I am having the exact isssues.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the steering wheel became firm with the power steering warning light illuminated. The contact was able to pull over the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted operated normally. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 72,000.
The power steering assist may be lost due to a poor electrical connection within the steering gear assembly. A loss of power steering, particularly at lower speeds increases the risk of a crash.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and the vehicle was difficulty to steer. The contact was able to safely drive the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with power steering unit failure. The contact was informed that the power steering unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that in 2016 the vehicle was repaired under an unknown recall for the power steering unit however, the failure occurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
Engine pain has oxidation and peeling prematurely.
Often on startup, though sometimes while driving, I will get a message on the dash to "Service Power Steering", and the steering wheel will become very hard to turn. This is not something you would want to have happen mid curve while driving as it could very well cause a crash. There was a recall on my truck model for this exact problem, but my VIN# was not on the recall and GM/Chevrolet refuses to pay for it to be fixed. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership for a diagnosis and the truck was giving them a code for "steering wheel torque sensor".
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated that the power steering service warning light was illuminated. The contact parked on the side of the road and restarted the vehicle but continued to experience the failure. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the torque sensor kit to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
Truck will have issues with misfires or rough idle. Technician advised that the truck has excessive intake valve carbon which is a known issue for 2015 - 2016 colorado and stated their is a bulletin for this know issue. However, this is not a recall even if they know this is something known that happens.
Transmision in this vehicle is the worst, and could be dangerous for novice drivers.I've read plaged problems with these vehicles and transmissions after I purchased it.Transmision jerky, shutters. You go to take off and it switches in to low gears too soon and causes the vehicle to vibrate.Sometimes slips between 4th and 5th gear. Also when giving a little bit of throttle sometimes vehicle acts like your flooring it,in rainy or icy weather can cause back wheels to spin causing fish tailing.Had it happen couple times.I've read torque converter problems, and some under a campaign have been replaced. This vehicle has low mileage for a 2015 (83,000)
Unknown- the radio changes stations without being touch and GPS is not working correctly making travel unsafe and it changes all settings without being touched like vehicle and everything that's connected to it.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while his father was driving at undisclosed speeds, the power steering assist became inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. An unknown local dealer was contacted and confirmed there was no recall coverage on the VIN for the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact about NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the local dealer for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
I lost power steering on 12/18/22. Informed by dealership that although a power steering loss is a problem that has resulted in a recall for 2015 chevy colorado trucks that this is a different problem. The power steering control module was replaced part number 84670807 sr
Engine Control module-PO442 leak detected and PO496 Evaporated Emission System Flow during non-purge. Also, Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module -1.B1425-03 Control module power circuit. When we fill the gas tank it takes multiple times to start And Stalls While Driving, almost causing accidents. We have diagnostic report by Firestone, Advanced Auto. First believed gas cap problem when started 2020-2021?Problem has become more constant to point of us not being comfortable driving far for fear of accident or getting stuck somewhere.
The contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the power steering failed to operate as needed. The contact used more than a normal effort to steer the vehicle. The contact pulled off the highway and stopped the vehicle, shifted to park(P), and turned the vehicle off and on. The contact stated that the power steering then started operating as needed. The contact stated that the steering failure became a recurring failure. The contact stated that an unknown message was displayed. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V213000 (Steering). The dealer replaced the steering gear torque sensor. The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact stated that the failure recurred. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
power steering fails intermittently, at random. sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. has failed on vehicle start, and during driving. 4wd, crew cab, long bed. according to NHTSA website vehicle has no open recalls, even though there is a recall for this (2015) make and model.
Beginning in 2018, perhaps earlier, I noticed that often when I would press the accelerator all the way, the engine would (and still does) make a sound (I’ve since learned, through many dealership interactions and internet searches, that the sound is referred as pinging or knocking from pre-detonation), and it SEEMED that the car’s computer would (and still does) electronically back off the throttle, and the rpm’s reduced in terms of speed of acceleration (sometimes the rpm’s even DECREASED as opposed to merely increasing less rapidly). This has placed myself and passengers of the car in danger by causing the car to go through intersections significantly slower than I (as well as my mother who also occasionally drives the car) would naturally anticipate, as this slow crossing through the intersection has led to many close-calls when intersecting traffic (when they have the right-of-way) almost crash into the broad side of the truck. It USED to occur I would put in any fuel with an octane rating lower than 91, but now it even happens with 91 octane fuel. The problem has been reproduced by two Chevrolet dealerships. I have taken it in many times to have them repair/replace/service parts that I thought might be causing the problem. The shop foreman at one location replicated it and said he had no idea what the cause could be. The service dept. was then in back-and-forth contact with engineers at GM over the next couple of days, and the engineers eventually suggested an oil system flush thing (which ended up not helping). It’s had oil filter changes, fuel induction service, and basically everything short of replacing the injectors or pistons. Neither the vehicle nor its components have been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. No warning lamps or messages have ever displayed in relation to the problem. My co-worker’s husband has a 2018 GMC Canyon with a V6, and says the exact same thing happens with his car.
My power steering goes out while I am driving. I noticed that there is a recall for Colorado’s that are the same year as mine for doing the same thing. But it says there isn’t a recall for my Vin number. The power steering goes out randomly while I am driving and causes my children not to be an eminent danger from suddenly being unable to turn the vehicle thank you for your time
Intermittent loss of power steering at all speeds. “Service Power Steering Drive With Care” indicated on dash. Have had it happen on start up, on the highway, and on side streets. Same issue as other 2015 Chevy Colorados, but not included in recall.
