The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed while making a turn, the steering wheel locked in place, and a warning message illuminated on the instrument panel stating that the power steering was disabled. The contact was able to manually pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, and then restart the vehicle before continuing to drive to the residence. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the vehicle inspected however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
I was going around a traffic circle when the power steering suddenly went out with no warning causing me to almost hit a stone wall. I received a code. Something about the steering gear and the steering position sensor. It appears to be the same problem as the 2015 Colorado has but the dealership would not acknowledge it being the case. This repair cost me over $2000.00 and almost caused a serious accident. Please get Chevy to add the 2016 vehicles to the 2015 recall. I'm guessing not enough people have died from this safety issue yet!
Power steering will stop working while driving vehicle. Light comes on and says service power steering and stabilitrak. Will correct after pulling over and turning car off and on. This has happened more than a few times and with me driving children through the mountains.
STABILITRAK AND POWER STEERING WARNINGS LIGHTS COME ON RANDOMLY WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE RESULTING IN NO TRACTION CONTROL AND LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHICH HAS PULLED ME OUT OF MY LANE OFF THE ROAD AND INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE ISSUE WAS CONFIRMED BY HIRLINGER CHEVROLET. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE RIGHT NOW BUT I AM BEING TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WASNT EFFECTED BY THE RECALL BECAUSE IT WAS MONTHS AFTER THE RECALL DATE.
I own a 2016 Chevy Colorado. Suddenly power testing was lost during driving. This has happened on 3 separate occasions now. I tow a camper with my children and fear this will result in a crash with injuries. Please look into this as it is the same problem the 2015 models had. Please have GMC issue a recall to fix this safety issue.
Infotainment screen goes crazy at random times while vehicle is in use. Screen jumps around and randomly changes, radio stations change, dashboard speed display changes screens as well. This is a very bad distraction while driving. I have video of this saved on my phone. I was able to pull over to record it yesterday (9/28/21). This problem has been happening on and off at random times for over a month. I have spoke to my dealer about it, and made an appointment for evaluation. I have also contacted Chevrolet service to see if it will be repaired at no cost as a safety issue.
On two separate occasions within a wk less than 100 miles the power steering has went out while driving. I get two dash warnings one saying service power steering the other saying service stabilitrac. I done some research and found out that gm recalled over 60000 vehicles with this exact issue for 2015 models however mine is a 2016. I’ve also seen online numerous 2016 owners other than myself having the same problem I am. I feel that this recall should extend 2016 models. My truck was purchased Nov of 2015 and currently has less than 63k miles.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist failed with the StabiliTrak warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact was able to restart the vehicle soon after failure and resumed normal driving operation. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where they diagnosed the vehicle with power steering assist failure. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and the contact was given a case number. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Power Steering message comes on...service power steering..the power steering stops working at any given time.It happened several times when I was driving and 2 times when I started the 2016 z71 colorado.Had it diagnosed at Apple Chevrolet in York,Pa.It was confirmed by the dealership as an internal issue with torque sensor and they also replaced a gear.An alignment was also done.
Driving down the road and suddenly the power steering went out. And when it goes out on this vehicle it is extra-ordinarily hard to steer, had I been in a turn I would have lost control of the vehicle. This is the 2nd time this has occurred and both times turning the vehicle off and on again fixes the issue. But this will ultimately result in a crash at some point and should be investigated with urgency.
When the vehicle is placed in Park and Ignition is turned off, the Ignition Key cannot be removed one out of eight or ten tries. It is available for inspection. My wife was running an errand after dark. She was unable to remove the Key, but did not want to leave the vehicle to be possibly stolen. This was a serious danger to her and it has also happened to me. Dealers confirm that this is a common problem, but only replace parts at my expense due to being out of warranty. The parts work for several months, then the problem reoccurs. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealer. No warnings prior to failure. Problem began at 41,000 miles.
My power steering on my 2016 Chevrolet Colorado went out on a 30mph turn and nearly lost control of my truck. As I was driving, I slowed to make a stop on a city street when there was a sudden loss of power steering. It was very difficult to steer and turn but I made it to the side of the road. The vehicle did not lose power or shut off. The message said there was a loss in power steering and to seek service. The traction control and stability track warning lights turned on. I turned off the vehicle. This problem happened about 4 months ago and had not reappeared until the last few days 06/19/2021 . Now it happen twice since. Upon restarting, the vehicle drove normal. It is a safety hazard. This is definitely a safety issue and it should be taken care of by Chevrolet. This should be forced to be repaired. This is a safety hazard for the public, the operator, and anyone riding in the vehicle. I will be bringing it to a deal in Freehold, NJ. 1 Affected Product
Power steering fails when driving down the road. Almost caused an accident the first time. Has now occured 5 times over the last 2 months in all types of weather conditions

When it first happened, I cranked my vehicle and seconds later, a chime and two messages went across my dash saying "Stabilitrack disabled." "Power steering disabled." and both were inoperable. I restarted the truck, and it ran fine. Happened again two weeks later. Then two weeks after that, it happened suddenly WHILE DRIVING down the road. Again, it worked properly after restarting, but it's started to be a constant. Now it immediately shows "Stabilitrack disabled" after starting and the power steering goes after about 10-15 minutes of driving, like clockwork. There were no lights on or any other warning indicators prior to this happening. It was a sudden issue with an otherwise unproblematic vehicle. I see there was a recall for a bad wiring harness connection that caused exactly this for the 2015 year model. Mine is a 2016 and no recall exists. I've seen a few other forum posts stating their 2016 has done this as well. I have not yet taken it to a mechanic/dealer, but that is my next action. It is available for inspection. Needless to say, this is extremely unsafe for both myself and other drivers on the road. Losing the ability to (positively) turn at an inopportune time could be catastrophic.
Key will not turn to off position to allow it to be removed when shifting to park position. Takes several attempts to remove.
2016-2020 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon diesel models have faulty DPF and DEF systems that fail within <20-60K miles. They do not warranty it as powertrain, and it is a common problem. SAFETY ISSUE: While out of state, the vehicle regenerating exhaust cleaning cycle can not properly clean the system. It then goes into limp mode. 2 dealers have tried to fix it, with no avail. Limp mode limits speed from 65mph with no power on hills, to 55, then 4mph. See this thread for how many people are experiencing problems: https://www.coloradodiesel.org/threads/dpf-regeneration.1137/page-2 Thank you, Andrew R
Today about 4:00 pm driving down the interstate my truck lost all electric dash and radio while driving stayed cranked going 70 mph around Robert Louisiana couldn’t see speed don’t know what is happening with this truck but it has several safety issues from brake assist lights that come on to radio and dash going off
2016chevyz714wd Key gets stuck in the ignition! Over and over! I’ve been to dealer/ no help there! What a nightmare! Can’t remove ignition key in parking lot to go to work! Recall and get a fix! This is a daily problem! [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated while his wife was driving 60 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact stated the "service power steering, drive with care" warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to park on the side of the road and restart the vehicle. The driver was able to drive to her residence. The contact stated he also experienced the failure a couple of weeks later. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Loss of power steering assist while driving due to poor electrical connection within steering gear assembly. This the SAME condition related to safety recall on 2015 Chevrolet Colorado under NHTSA campaign number 21V-213. Power steering failed causing extremely dangerous driving condition. GMC dealer identified problem as poor electrical connection within steering gear assembly. Dealer would not honor recall under campaign 21V-213 because my vehicle is a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. GMC dealer replaced the steering gear, including the torque sensor cover assembly - the SAME repair for the SAME condition under the recall for 2015 Colorado.
The key gets stuck in the ignition after you finish driving and you put the car in park. There is some lever that doesn't release when in park. Many, many others have reported this problem. It is very dangerous as the key cannot be turned to the off position and removed, which ends up draining the car battery and leaving the driver stranded. Some are suggesting to remove the safety lock on the ignition as the only solution to get the key out. This would allow a driver to remove the key WHILE DRIVING, which would probably result in an accident and death.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL AND STABILITY TRACK WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. MATT MAZZEI CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (1175 PARALLEL DR, LAKEPORT, CA 95453, (707)413-6418) WAS CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 62,000.
2016 colorado SERVICE BULLITEN PI1429 CANT REMOVE KEY FROM IGNITION WHEN PARKING SHIFT LEVER ISNT ENGAGING OR FULLY SEATING. THIS IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS IF AN EMERGENCY EVER AROSE OR RESPONDING TO IT...IF YOU CANT REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION THAN WHAT IS THE POINT OF EVEN DRIVING THIS TRUCK. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED IM NOT GIVING CHEVY $800 TO FIX YOUR OWN MISTAKE. PAID 30K FOR A TRUCK THAT YOU CANT TAKE THE KEY OUT OF.
WHEN TURNING OFF MOTOR, KEY GETS STUCK IN IGNITION SWITCH AT RANDOM. KEY CAN STILL TURN MOTOR OFF AND ON, BUT NOT BE REMOVED. HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR OVER A YEAR.
The key will not come out the iginiton. It takes several minutes to hours turning it back and forth to get it to finally come out. This is a true issue because it drains the battery overnight when you can not turn the key off.
AFTER FUELING, THE VEHICLE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START. AFTER SITTING FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES, THE ENGINE WILL START BUT IDLES ROUGHLY FOR A FEW MORE MINUTES. ALSO AFTER LONG HIGHWAY DRIVES, THE ENGINE WILL RUN ROUGHLY AND OCCASIONALLY STALL WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED. VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT TO DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY PURGE SOLENOID. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM IN 2015 MODELS AS DETAILED IN GM SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT LETTER #18029. THIS 2016 MODEL YEAR IS NOT INCLUDED.
PASSENGER PRESENCE MODULE FAULTY
THERE IS A LOUD ROARING NOISE WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS. IT'S LOUDER AT HIGHER SPEEDS.
MY WINDOWS DO NOW GO UP ALL THE WAY WHEN I HOLD THE DOOR BUTTON UP. THEY GO UP PARTIALLY AND THEN BACK DOWN. I HAVE TO MAKE MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO ROLL THEM UP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD NOTHING WAS WRONG. JOHN JONES GM IN CORYDON INDIANA DISMISSED THIS ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN PARKED.
I SMELL GAS INTERMITTENTLY. VERY STRONG WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS.
TRANSMISSION SHIFTING HARD AND SLIPPING IN GEAR 1 AND 2 ALSO DOWN SHIFTS HARD 2 AND 3 GEAR.
The Good Year tires that I purchased are making a high speed vibration. I feel that my safety is at high risk when I am driving on the highway. I did seek help from a independent service center. They rebalanced the tires, and one tire was replaced under warranty. I paid $65.00 out of my pocket. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacture, etc. There were no warning lamps or messages.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED MAKING THE VEHICLE UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO WOODY FOLSOM AUTOMOTIVE (1749 GOLDEN ISLES PKWY, BAXLEY, GA 31513) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE POWER STEERING UNIT NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS OF YET. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 115,000.
AFTER FILLING GAS TANK IT DOESN'T START IMMEDIATELY.ALSO WHEN TURNING OFF VEHICLE THE KEY DOES NOT GO TO OFF WHERE IT CAN BE PULLED OUT. TAKES MANY TRIES AND STEERING WHEEL APPEARS TIGHT TO WIGGLE TO RELEASE KEY. DOESN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME BUT ENOUGH TIMES TO BE CONCERNING
POWER STEERING WILL QUIT WORKING WHILE DRIVING, FIRST TIME I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE. I HAVE TO TURN OFF IGNITION AND RESTART, WILL BE OK FOR A WHILE THEN GO OUT AGAIN. VERY DANGEROUS.
Key will not come out of the ignition. Key gets stuck and will not unlock from the ignition. Repeated attempts to restart and reengage the transmission/ put into park and nothing works. This should be recalled immediately.
THE (EMISSIONS) EVAP VALVE ISSUE SEEN IN 2017-2020 MODELS THAT HAVE AN ACTIVE RECALL PUT, IS HAPPENING WITH MY CURRENT MODEL (2016), YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN SENT FORWARD FOR 2016S.
MY 2016 COLORADO IS EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE 2015 COLORADO COVERED BY GM RECALL 15595. OFTEN WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE IS LOST AND THE STEERING REVERTS TO MANUALLY STEERING AND IS VERY HARD TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND GET THE VEHICLE TO A SAVE PLACE. GM STATES THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH MANY 2016 COLORADOS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AS THE 2015. THE INITIAL RECALL APPARENTLY DID NOT COVER ENOUGH VEHICLES.
Intermittent loss of power steering while driving. Hard to turn vehicle, especially at lower speeds.
DURING ANY TYPE OF MOISTURE IE (FOG, RAIN) VEHICLE GOES INTO REDUCED ENGINE POWER MODE CODES FROM THE ECM P2122 AND P2138 BOTH RELATING TO APP. FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS IN RAIN STORM IN MOTION, APP PEDAL WAS REPLACED WITH NEW OEM PART BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I SUSPECT WATER INTRUSION FROM WIPER COWLING AFFECTING ELECTRIC HARNESS. THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT EXIST DURING DRY SEASON. AFTER MANY HOURS OF ONLINE RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM IN CHEVROLET VEHICLES.
Experiencing intermittent power steering lose while vehicle is moving. Contacted GM and got a GM diagnostics and they said that I have to replace steering rack. Same problem as other intermittent steering loss. Safety concern. I have more files but difficult to upload on current platform.
VEHICLE STALLED DUE TO BRAKING DURING STOPPING HAS BRAKE ASSIST SERVICE LIGHT ON STILL DOES THE SAME THING OTHER VEHICLES HAVE RECALLS
Starting around 9 months ago, I have had several incidents of the power steering stop working. Some of these have occurred while driving at highway speeds. The problem randomly appears and is extremely unsafe. The issue has gradually starting happening more often. Sometimes, the issue will clear after turning the vehicle off and back on. Other times, it will clear after driving for a while. The symptoms are exactly the same as those mentioned in the recall for the 2015 Colorado under recall #15595.
1ST TIME IT WAS STATIONARY, 3 DAYS LATER LOSS POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING ON 11-10 AND 11-11-20.
The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while backing out of a parking space at a very slow speed, the braking system suddenly malfunctioned and erroneously released causing the vehicle to surge backward and crash into a second parked vehicle. During the incident, no injuries were reported and a police report was taken at the scene. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the rear driver side brake caliper and brake hose were faulty and needed to be replaced. The caliper and hose were replaced and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was also contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000.
WHILE THE VEHICLE REMAINED IN MOTION TAKING A TURN ON A ROUNDABOUT, THE VEHICLES POWER STEERING AND STABILITRAK SUDDENLY TURNS OFF CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO BECOME VERY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETE THE TURN. THE SITUATION HAPPENED TWICE IN ROUNDABOUTS IN THE PAST COUPLE MONTHS. ONE OF THE TIMES THIS HAPPENED MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WHILE MY TWO YOUNG CHILDREN WERE IN THE VEHICLE. SHE DESCRIBED HITTING THE CURB, BECAUSE OF LACK OF ARM STRENGTH TO PULL THE WHEEL. THE ISSUE RESOLVES WHEN YOU CAN SAFELY PARK AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE DEALER IT WAS CONFIRMED THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH THE "STEERING GEAR PINION" AND APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE WITH CHEVY COLORADO'S. THE DEALER MENTIONED THE COST TO REPLACE THIS ELECTRICAL COMPONENT INCLUDING LABOR WAS AN UPWARDS OF 1800 DOLLARS. FOR 2015 MODEL YEARS IT APPEARS 3000 VEHICLES WERE RECALLED FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE, HOWEVER A BROADER RECALL WAS NOT EXTENDED TO THE 2016 MODEL YEAR. AFTER CONTACTING GM IT WAS EXPRESSED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER MY VEHICLE UNDER THIS RECALL AT THIS TIME. I WAS CHARGED FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF ISSUE.
WHEN TRAVELING FORWARD,OR TURNING, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS BETWEEN 20 MPH AND 40 MPH, THIS VEHICLE SHUDDERS ( 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION)AND ACCELERATION PAUSES UNTIL A LOT OF EXTRA EFFORT IS PLACED ON THE GAS PEDAL.THE TRANSMISSION THEN DOWNSHIFTS WITH A SUDDEN LURCH. THIS LEADS TO A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN INSTANT ACCELERATION IS NEEDED.THIS HAPPENS EVERYDAY AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY AND WHETHER HOT OR COLD.
POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL WHILE DRIVING CAUSING STEERING TO BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, AND POTENTIALLY EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. STABILTRAC MESSAGE WOULD BE DISPLAYED ON THE MESSAGE CENTER. IT WOULD RESET UPON TURNING OFF THE THE VEHICLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE MESSAGE POWER STEERING FAILURE WAS DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. AFTER TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE FAILURE SELF CORRECTED AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED AS DESIGNED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO CHEVROLET OF CANTON LOCATED AT 250 LIBERTY BLVD, CANTON, GA 30114, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC STEERING MOTOR AND TORQUE SENSOR WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
