THE PCM REPORTS ERROR P1518, BUT IS INTERMITTENT (THUS IT HAS NOT BEEN TAKEN IN YET INTIL IT IS MORE PREDICTABLE -IE SOLVABLE) THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE PCM REDUCES ENGINE TO IDLE UNTIL A POWER CYCLE - VERY DANGEROUS, BUT AS I HAVE FOUND OUT BEFORE INTERMITTENT FAILURES CAN NOT EASILY BE DIAGNOSED - SHOULD BE A CHECK TO RETURN POWER IF THE FAILURE IS GONE FOR A TIME.*AK
EXCESSIVE HEAT,EVEN WITH A/C ON MAX.INTOLERABLE INSIDE CAR WHILE DRIVING OR AT IDLE. SEATS AND CONSOLE HEATING UP SO MUCH THAT IT IS TO HOT TO TOUCH. POSSIBLE PROBLEM BECAUSE OF FOUR CATALYTIC CONVERTERS INSTEAD OF TWO FOR THE YEAR2000 CORVETTE. POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD AND DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING!*AK
AFTER MAKING A SHORT TRIP TO THE STORE I CAME OUT TO FIND THE STEERING COLUMN WOULD NOT UNLOCK. DIGITAL INFORMATION CENTER READ "SERVICE STEERING COLUMN". TOW TRUCK HAD TO BE CALLED. *AK REF. IN EA02-031 *CJS
EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION OF 1 QUART PER 600 MILES. DEALER CONFIRMS NO LEAKS. *AK
BRAKES WERE DRAGGING TO THE POINT OF LOCKING UP, AND ROTORS GOT REAL HOT. PULLED OVER, AND DISENGAGED ACTIVE HANDLING OF VEHICLE. DEALER WILL ORDER ALL NEW PARTS & RUN TESTS TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK
"SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" INDICATION CAME UP ON THE DIGITAL DRIVER'S INFORMATION CENTER (DIC). THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM WITH 1997-2000 CORVETTES. ALTHOUGH THE INCIDENT WITH MY CAR TOOK PLACE UPON START-UP, MEANING THE CAR WAS NOT IN MOTION, IF IT HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION, IT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT STEER THE CAR, SINCE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS. *AK REF. IN EA02-031 *CJS
1. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WEIGHTS FLEW OFF ON THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALER AFTER PURCHASE. THE REAR WHEEL WEIGHTS FLEW OFF , FIRST THE LEFT AND THEN THE RIGHT, WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, SLAMMING INTO THE INNER FENDER LINERS. THE REAR END BEGAN TO BOUNCE DRAMATICALLY, AS EACH WHEEL HAD OVER 4 OUNCES OF WEIGHTS ON THEM. WHEELS ARE THE EXTRA COST MAGNESIUM WHEELS. 2. ON A TRIP, THE GAS GAUGE SUDDENLY DROPPED TO EMPTY, FROM 3/4 FULL, AND THE DIC ALARM (LOW FUEL) WENT ON. PULLED INTO A GAS STATION, THINKING I WAS OUT OF FUEL. I COULD ONLY PUT IN 4 GALLONS! 3. STEERING COLUMN LOCK WOULD NOT RELEASE AND COULD NOT STEER CAR, BUT CAR DID START AND GO INTO GEAR ! I THINK THIS IS THE MOST SERIOUS FAILURE AS ONE MAY NOT NOTICE THAT THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WAS ON AND ACTUALLY DRIVE OFF, BUT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN VEHICLE COULD ONLY GO STRAIGHT, AS STRAIGHT INTO SOMBODY!! TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE ALWAYS LOW, WOULD NOT SHOW IF TIRES TOO LOW OR OVER INFLATED UNTIL TOO LATE AT ANY SPEED. ABS/ACTIVE HANDLING SYSTEM LIGHT ON, TURNED ENGINE OFF 1 MILE LATER LIGHT GOES OFF. CLUTCH PEDAL TOO STIFF.
WHEN DRIVING FOR ABOUT AN HOUR THE ALARM WENT OFF, AND FUEL GAUGE DROPPED TO ZERO, AS IF THE VEHICLE DID NOT HAVE GAS IN IT. IT HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY. HOWEVER, CONSUMER CONSULTED WITH CHRYSLER. THEY STATED THAT IT WAS NOT A SAFETY DEFECT, AND THAT NOTHING WOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. *AK
MY LETTER TO CHEVROLET: AS YOU KNOW, C5 CORVETTES HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK MALFUNCTIONING AND LEAVING OWNERS STRANDED. THIS HAS EVEN BEEN REPORTED TO OCCUR WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. I KNOW OF SEVERAL OWNERS AFFECTED, AND THEY HAVE H
VEHICLES BRAKES LOCKED UP, CAUSING SEVERE FLAT SPOT ON TIRES. THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY CONCERN, AS THE CAR IS NEARLY UNCONTROLLABLE AT THE TIME OF LOCKUP. THIS VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN FROM THE MANUFACTURERS PLANT IN BOWLING GREEN, KY TO LYMAN, SC, APPROXIMATELY 400 MILES, BY WAY OF NASHVILLE, TN. IT SAT IN THE GARAGE THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE NEXT WEEKEND, THE BRAKES LOCKED UP. TAKEN TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, IT REMAINED THERE FOR TWO FULL WEEKS WHILE THEY REPAIRED THE ABS SYSTEM. WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE SYSTEM AGAIN FAILED AFTER THE FIRST ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR WERE UNSUCCESSFULL. THE SECOND ATTEMPT REQUIRED PARTS THAT WERE TO BE BACK ORDERED. THE PARTS WERE LOCATED AT THE CORVETTE PLANT, HOWEVER, AND THE REPAIRS MADE. THE VEHICLES BRAKE SYSTEM NOW APPEARS TO BE NORMAL. THE LAST PART OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM, THE TIRES, HAVE NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. ONLY A "GOOD WILL OFFER" OF $75 HAS BEEN OFFERED, TOWARDS THE COST OF $1600 WORTH OF TIRES, ON A $46,000 CAR. *AK
DRIVER'S SIDE SHOULDER BELT IS OVER LAPPING AND WON'T RETRACT. A CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE IN REPAIR SHOP THREE TIMES FOR REPAIRS, AND THE DEALER COULDN'T DETERMINE THE CAUSE. DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE STEERING WHEEL IS JUMPING OUT OF THE CONSUMER'S HAND. *AK
HEARD A LOUD NOISE FROM REAR END WHENEVER A TURN WAS BEING MADE. ALSO, STEERING COLUMN INTERMITTENTLY LOCKED UP. DEALER NOTIFIED. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
WHEN FUEL TANK IS COMPLETELY FULL FUEL LEAKS FROM THE TOP OF THE VENT. PLEASE GIVE ANY FURTHER DETAILS. *AK
THEIR IS NO RUBBER ON CLUTCH & BRAKE PEDALS, FOOT CAN SLIP OFF WHEN WET OR WITH LEATHER SOLES. *ET
CONVERTIBLE TOP HAS BLACK MARKS MADE EACH TIME TOP IS PUT DOWN. *AK
TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKED FROM VEHICLE, RENDERING VEHICLE INOPERABLE. DEALER HAS INSPECTED VEHICLE, AND WILL REPLACE TRANSMISSION. MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.*AK
AUTO HAS MOLD GROWING IN VENTILIATION SYSTEM. CHEVROLET ATTEMPTED TO FIX MANY TIMES. IT IS DANGEROUS AND MAKES PASSENGERS ILL. WHILE THERE IS STILL A WARRANTY ON AUTOMOBILE CHEVROLET REFUSES TO FIX PROBLEM. CAR STINKS AND IS A HEALTH HAZARD.*AK
WHILE DRIVING, STEERING COLUMN LOCKED UP CAUSING AN ACCIDENT AND INJURY, MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED. *TT REF. IN EA02-031 *CJS
VEHICLE HAD THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS; REMOVABLE TOP SQUEAKED, DRIVER'S SIDE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE WAS LOOSE, RIGHT FRONT TURN SIGNAL FAILED, EXCESS OIL, AND STEERING/IGNITION INTERLOCK RECALL. ALSO DELCO BATTERY CABLE LEAKED ACID, CONTROL LIGHT MALFUNCTIONED.*AK
THE CONVERTIBLE TOP SQUEALED,THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE HAD COME LOOSE, THE RIGHT FRONT TURN SIGNAL HAD GONE OUT, THE VEHICLE EXCESSIVELY USED OIL, THE VEHICLE HAD A RECALL ON THE STEERING IGNITION LOCK, ULTIMATELY THE STEERING LOCKED AND THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE BEING BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE GAS GUAGE MALFUNCTIONED, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT HAD COME ON, THE VEHICLE STALLED, AND THE BATTERY LEAKED ACID. CONSUMER NOTICED AFTER STARTING VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL WAS STILL LOCKED, AND CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO MAKE ANY TURNS.*AK
WHILE DRIVING STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP. DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE LOCKING PIN ,BUT PROBLEM RECURRED.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH WARNING INDICATOR STEERING WHEEL LOCK CAME ON, AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED, AND WOULD NOT TURN. RECENTLY, THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, AND THE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN. CONSUMER TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL AND HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. RECALL 04V060000 CONCERNING ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK WAS ISSUED, BUT THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN. *AK (CONSUMER INDICATED IN FOLLOW-UP PHONE CALL WITH CHERYL TUOSTO ON 3/9/04 THAT INCIDENT OCCURRING AT 60 MPH HAPPENED TO PREVIOUS OWNER, DAVID PRITCHARD (SEE EA02-031 - GM COMPLAINT CASE # 06735883 AND ODI NOTES) AND NOT HIMSELF. LAWRENCE ONLY EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF THE COLUMN TO UNLOCK AND ONLY DROVE CAR ABOUT A FOOT BEFORE HE NOTICED "SERVICE COLUMN LOCK" MESSAGE AND SHUT OFF THE CAR. CAT
STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND DEALER TOLD CONSUMER NOT TO DRIVE. *AK
