ORIGINAL OWNER OF VEHICLE. BURNS THROUGH FULL OIL CONSTANTLY WHILE DRIVING. HAVE TO CARRY OIL IN CAR AND CHECK OFTEN. THERE IS CURRENTLY CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OVER THIS ISSUE AS IT IS HAPPENING WAY TO MANY CARS FOR IT TO BE A COINCIDENCE. OUR OTHER 2013 CHEVY MALIBU ALSO IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM AND RUINED THE ENGINE BEFORE CAR LOAN WAS EVEN PAID OFF. THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING.
85K MILES AND USING 3 QUARTS OF OIL WITHIN 2000 MILES. VEHICLE STALLS WHILE DRIVING. THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR ISSUES WITH 2011 AND 2012 WHERE SERVICE BULLETINS AND EXTENDED COVERAGE HAVE BEEN ADDED. DRIVING VEHICHLE AND THE ENGINE STALLS. HAD TO STOP AND RESTART. GARAGE DETERMINED IT WAS 3 QUARTS LOW ON OIL SINCE MY OIL CHANGE 2,000 MILES AGO
I HAVE A 2013 CHEVY EQUINOX, 2.4L WITH A HUGE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. MY ENGINE LIGHT IS ON, AND THE VEHICLE STALL INTERMITTENTLY IF I'M SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, AND I OFTEN HAVE CHALLENGES STARTING IT BACK UP. I PURCHASED THIS CAR ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO, AND BEING A SINGLE FATHER OF TWO, I DON'T HAVE THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES FOR REPAIRS.
DRIVERS SIDE WIPER INOPERABLE WHILE PASSENGER SIDE WORKS NORMAL. STATIONARY AND IN MOTION
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. EVER SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE OIL CONSUMPTION WAS VERY HIGH (APPROXIMATELY ONE QUART PER WEEK). THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO HENNESSY GMC/CHEVROLET (7261 JONESBORO RD, MORROW, GA 30260) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 167,522.
VEHICLE IS USING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY WELL MAINTAINED AND ONLY HAS 85,000 MILES ON IT. THE VEHICLE NOW DIES OR STALLS AND IS INOPERABLE. I HAVE NOTED HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND A PRIOR RECALL FOR EARLIER MODEL YEARS. A SERVICE BULLETIN WAS PUBLISHED BUT VEHICLE OWNERS WERE NEVER INFORMED OF THE WELL KNOWN ISSUE. I NOW HAVE A VEHICLE THAT IS WORTHLESS AFTER BUYING IT NEW IN 2013.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000.

2013 2LT EQUINOX 2.4L FWD 67000 MILES ISSUES: OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUES, USES 2 QTS + BETWEEN OIL CHANGES, STARTED AT 50K MILES, QUOTED OVER $2000 TO REPLACE PISTONS, RINGS, AND TIMING CHAIN (KNOWN ISSUE ON 2.4L ECO-TEC MOTORS, OIL AND FILTER ALWAYS CHANGED ON OR BEFORE TIME DUE WITH DEXOS 1 VALVOLINE OIL AND AC DELCO FILTER). POSSIBILITY OF BREAKDOWN, ENGINE FAILURE. RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT OF CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER DUE TO OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE: $800 FAULTY EXHAUST MANIFOLD STARTING AT 55K MILES, CRACKED, LEAKING FUMES INTO PASSENGER AREA, QUOTED $600 TO REPLACE PLUS RECOMMEND REPLACING ENGINE MOUNTS TO PREVENT FUTURE FAILURE: $1000 (KNOWN ISSUE ON 2.4L ECO-TEC MOTORS). FREQUENT HEADACHES ALL WINTER FROM BREATHING IN EXHAUST. FAULTY TRANSMISSION SHIFTING STARTING AT 50K MILES, CLUNKY SHIFTING AT LOW SPEEDS, QUOTED OVER $600 FOR FLUSH, INSPECTION, SENSORS AND SEAL REPLACEMENT. FAULTY FRONT AXLE SEAL REPAIRED AT 55K MILES FOR $300. GETTING NO WHERE NEAR THE ADVERTISED AND PROMISED 32MPG (AVERAGE OF 22 MPG ON HWY TRIPS WITH ECO MODE ON, 14 MPG IN TOWN). VEHICLE HAS RATTLING NOISE WHEN ACCELORATING. CREATING THE CAR TO ACCELORATE SLOWLY.
I HAVE A 2013 CHEVROLET EQUINOX THAT HAS 58000 MILES NOW WITH THE 2.4L ENGINE. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS LOW ON OIL. THEY WANTED TO PREFORM AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON THE VEHICLE AND STATED IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND GM IS COVERING THE REPAIRS IF IT FAILS THE TEST. WE DROVE THE VEHICLE 1500 MILES AS REQUESTED AND WHEN WE TOOK IT BACK IT DID IN FACT FAIL THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AS IT BURNED MORE THAN A QUART OF OIL IN THE 1500 MILES. WE WERE TOLD THE ENGINE HAS WORN PISTONS AND PISTON RINGS. A 6 YEAR OLD CAR THAT HAD 56000 ON IT PRIOR TO THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST HAS WORN PISTONS AND WORN RINGS? WE WERE TOLD WE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AND THAT GM WOULD PUT A NEW ENGINE IN IT. A LITTLE WHILE LATER WE WERE CALLED BACK AND TOLD OUR VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE OIL CONSUMPTION. WE HAVE SPOKEN WITH A SENIOR ADVISOR AT CHEVROLET WHO STATED TO US THAT THE CAR IS 6 YEARS OLD AND WOULD NOT LAST FOREVER. WE THEN ASKED TO SPEAK TO THAT PERSON'S SUPERVISOR WHO TOLD US THAT GM CANNOT PUT VEHICLE VIN NUMBERS IN FOR RECALLS AND THAT THEY WORK WITH THE NHTSA TO DO THAT. I'M NOT SURE IF THAT IS TRUE OF IF GM IS TRYING TO PULL ONE OVER ON ME. I ASKED TO SPEAK WITH THAT PERSONS SUPERVISOR AND WAS FLAT OUT TOLD NO. I UNDERSTAND THAT MANY OTHER CHEVROLET EQUINOX'S WITH THE 2.4L ENGINE HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE AND GM ALSO REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM EITHER. SINCE I WAS TOLD THE NHTSA WAS INVOLVED WITH THIS I HAVE NOW NOTIFIED YOU. I NOW HAVE A VEHICLE THAT FAILED GM'S OWN TEST TO DETERMINE IF A VEHICLE HAS A OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM. ONCE IT FAILED THEY SAID THE VIN IS NOT INCLUDED AND THEY REFUSE TO TAKE CARE OF IT AND DROPPED IT IN NTHSA'S LAP SAYING YOU PUTS VIN NUMBERS IN FOR RECALLS. ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. TAKATA RECALL. DRIVING CAR TO WORK, STARTED MAKING A CLINKING SOUND ABOUT 3 MILES DOWN THE ROAD I ARRIVED AT WORK. PARKED THE CAR AND OIL STARTED POURING OUT OF THE REAR MAIN SEAL. GOT THE CAR TOWED HOME. CALLED GM THEY STATED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND HAVE FIXED OVER 7 THIS YEAR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE OIL CONSUMPTION LEVELS WOULD LOWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO ADD OIL IN THE VEHICLE FOUR TIMES, WHICH RESULTED IN THE OIL LEVELS STAYING THE SAME. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BILL HOOD CHEVROLET (69020 HWY 190 SERVICE RD, COVINGTON, LA 70433, (985)-590-4102) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS ABNORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION LEVELS AND THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 136,000.
WHILE DRIVING MY SPEED SUDDENLY REDUCED AND I GOT A MESSAGE ON MY DASHBOARD THAT SAID SERVICE STABILITRACK ENGINE POWER REDUCED
CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED 2013 CHEVY EQUINOX PURCHASED IN 2015, MICHIGAN.WINTER, 2018. WHILE DRIVING, MY VEHICLE BEGAN TO LURCH WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. AT THE NEXT STOP, THE RPMS BEAN TO ACT ERRATIC, TEETERING ABOVE AND BELOW 1000. THE VEHICLE THEN COMPLETELY STALLED. THIS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES ON MY WAY TO MY DESTINATION. EACH TIME, AS I ACCELERATED, IT LURCHED AND I FEARED IT WOULD STALL OUT. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER, THEY GAVE ME A DIAGNOSTIC THAT SAID SPARK PLUGS. CAR DROVE OK FOR A MONTH. THEN A DEEP FREEZE CAME. SAME ISSUE OCCURRED. I CHECKED MY OIL (BECAUSE THESE VEHICLES HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OIL CONSUMPTION) PRESSURIZED AIR BLEW OUT OF THE DIPSTICK, IT WAS ALSO 2 QUARTS LOW--I HAD JUST GOTTEN MY OIL CHANGED 4 WEEKS PRIOR. PUT SOME OIL IN AND DROVE. SAME ISSUE. STALLED AT BUSY INTERSECTION STOP. GOT TO MY DESTINATION TO DISCOVER A TRAIL OF OIL BEHIND MY VEHICLE. GOT IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. DIAGNOSED AS A BLOWN REAR MAIN SEAL DUE TO A FROZEN PCV VALVE. THIS IS A WELL-KNOWN ISSUE WITH EQUINOXES, ENOUGH THAT THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN (14882). MY EXPERIENCE/SYMPTOMS MATCH THE CONDITION DESCRIPTION OF THE BULLETIN TO A T, HOWEVER, FOR SOME REASON, MY VIN DOES NOT FALL UNDER COVERAGE FOR THIS ENGINEERING FLAW. CHEVY KNOWS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, YET THEY STILL REFUSE TO RECALL THE VEHICLES. IN THE MEANTIME, I'M STUCK PAYING AN $1800 BILL TO GET THE REAR MAIN SEAL FIXED--WITHOUT ANY REGARD FOR THE PCV VALVE, CRANKCASE, OR OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROBLEM. SHAME ON GM.
DRIVING ON X-WAY AT POSTED SPEED (70 MPH) FAINT BLUE SMOKE FROM REAR OF CAR (REARVIEW MIRROR) OTHERWISE DRIVING OK (NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT); FEW MILES LATER ON 4-LANE AT 50MPH CLATTERING SOUND FROM ENGINE; VEHICLE STALLED AT STOP LIGHTS AND WAS DIFFICULT TO START; NURSED IT TO CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP; AS DRIVEN INTO SERVICE DEPARTMENT VEHICLE WAS TRAILING A STEADY STREAM OF ENGINE OIL; TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSIS: THE PCV (POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION VALVE)WAS FROZEN SHUT THUS ALLOWING CRANKCASE PRESSURE TO BUILD UP ULTIMATELY BLOWING OUT ENGINE REAR MAIN SEAL; LACK OF ENGINE LUBRICATION CAUSED TIMING CHAIN FAILURE AND METALLIC DEBRIS WAS FOUND THROUGHOUT ENGINE INDICATING TOTAL FAILURE AND RE-MANUFACTURED ENGINE INSTALLATION REQUIRED ($7651.87 CHARGED). BACKGROUND DATA: CAR PARKED OUTSIDE IN BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES WITH WIND TOWARD GRILLE OF CAR; SOAKED FOR ABOUT 20HRS BEFORE STARTUP AND DRIVEAWAY WHICH WENT OK; ODO MILES ARRIVING AT DEALERSHIP 81,986; VEHICLE SERVICED REGULARLY AT CHEVY DEALERSHIPS; VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN BY MY WIFE AND DID NOT HAVE ANY HARSH DRIVING CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS WAS A SAFETY RISK FOR MY WIFE WITH THE ENGINE STALLING INTERMITTENTLY AND DIFFICULT TO RESTART; FORTUNATELY COMPLETE FAILURE DID NOT OCCUR AT 70 MPH ON EXPRESSWAY. THERE WAS A GM SERVICE BULLETIN (14882) COVERING THIS SAME FAILURE SCENARIO (PCV FROZEN LEADING TO SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE) BUT GM SAYS MY VIN # IS NOT COVERED, NO EXCEPTIONS! THIS IS A PCV SYSTEM DESIGN PROBLEM NOT PROPERLY VALIDATED IN PRE-PRODUCTION TESTING; I AM A RETIRED GM ENGINE CALIBRATION ENGINEER AND CAN DISCUSS IN MORE DETAIL IF NEEDED; THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT COST ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE TRADE-IN VALUE FOR THIS VEHICLE (WITH AN OPERATING ENGINE) HTTPS://GM.OEMDTC.COM/RECALL/SB-10057977-8108.PDF
RECALL # 2025302. I AM UNABLE TO DO MY RECALL, I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP NEAR ME BONIFACE-HIERS CHEVROLET AND EXPLAINED THAT WE ONLY HAVE 1 VEHICLE AT HOME AND IN ORDER TO FIX THE RECALL I MUST LEAVE THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALER, HOWEVER THEY CAN NOT PROVIDE A LOANER FOR ME SO I CAN PICK UP MY KIDS FROM SCHOOL, THEY CAN NOT GIVE A LABOR TIME BECAUSE THEY DONT KNOW THE CONDITIONS OF THE PART. MY QUESTION IS HOW CAN I GET THIS DONE CAUSE VISIBILITY IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF DRIVING SPECIALLY HERE IN MELBOURNE, FL THAT WE GET LOTS OF RAIN. THANK YOU.
THE PCV VALVE IS CAUSING AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. DUE TO THE DESIGN IT IS TRAPPING CONDENSATION AND THROWING IT INTO THE AIR INTAKE AND OIL. OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD DAMAGE TO THEIR ENGINES DUE TO THIS FLAW. I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE STALL AND DIE ON ME WHILE DRIVING. WHEN CHECKING THE AIR INTAKE THEIR IS FLUID IN THE MANIFOLD WHICH SHOULDN'T HAPPEN IN A CLOSED SYSTEM. I'VE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM, THOUGH MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS HAVE CONTACTED THEM WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND HAVE BEEN IGNORED.
ON 2.25.19 WHILE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT MY CAR STALLED TWICE WHEN I GAVE IT GAS TO GO, THAN WHILE TRYING TO BACK INTO A PARKING SPACE IT STALLED TWICE. ON MY WAY BACK TO WORK THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AFTER A DAY OR TWO IT WENT OUT. TODAY 3.5.19 ON MY WAY TO WORK I WAS DRIVING AND THE LIGHTS DIMMED AND THE RADIO TURNED OFF FOR ABOUT A MIN. OR SO AND WHEN IT CAME BACK ON IT WAS LIKE I HAD JUST STARTED THE CAR. AFTER GETTING GAS I STARTED MY CAR AND BEFORE I PUT IT IN GEAR IT STALLED OUT, RESTARTED IT AND IT KEPT STALLING ABOUT 6-8 TIMES THAN FINALLY I TURNED IT ON AND IT DIDN'T HESITATE OR THE DASH LIGHT DIM SO I PUT IN GEAR AND IT DROVE OK BUT I WAS WORRIED THAT IT MIGHT STALL WHEN I WAS MAKING A TURN OR IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION IF YOU ARE DRIVING AND YOUR CAR JUST STOPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2011 EQUINOX FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM AND IF SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS ON OTHER YEARS 2010-2016 NOTED THEN THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON ALL THESE YEARS AND GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED. I NOTICE THAT UNLESS THERE A NUMBER OF DEATHS INVOLVED THESE DEALERS/MANUFACTORS DON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT FIXING THESE PROBLEMS. WE SPEND LOTS OF MONEY ON THESE CARS AND WE SHOULD'T HAVE TO WORRY IF WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT IN THEM WITH OUR FAMILIES. THE TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED IT HAS BEEN IN GEAR OR WHILE I AM PUTTING IT IN GEAR. THE 2011 RECALL 11195A.
VEHICLE RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND EXPERIENCING HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION. ENGINE WAS CLICKING WHEN ACCELERATING AND JERKING BACK AND FOURTH WHEN SLOWING TO A STOP. DEALER STATED IT WAS CLOGGED PCV. A RECALL 14882 STATES THIS EXACT ISSUE CONCERNING 2010-2014 CHEVY EQUINOX WITH THE ECOTEC 2.4L ENGINE. THE DEALERSHIP AND CHEVY CUSTOMER CARE BOTH STATED MY VIN WAS NOT UNDER THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE SAME EXACT ENGINE AND MODEL SO I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. TOTAL COST WAS APPROXIMATELY $900. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND CHEVY NEEDS TO COVER THIS AND REIMBURSE FOR THE COST. I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION AND A CASE NUMBER WITH GM ON THE MATTER.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A DISTRACTION WITH ONE SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD BEING FLOODED WITHOUT A WIPER. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,000. THE VIN WAS INVALID.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AND INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. A LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000. CONSUMER RECEIVED A LETTER STATING THAT VEHICLE IS COVERED UNDER A SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT FOR EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION DUE TO PISTON RING WEAR ISSUES. *DL
EXCESSIVELY RAPID OIL CONSUMPTION DEFECT RESULTED IN ENGINE SHUTDOWN AND MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE. OIL PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM DID NOT FUNCTION (E.G., NO OIL PRESSURE LIGHT INDICATOR). ENGINE BEGAN KNOCKING, THEN VEHICLE LURCHING AND STALLING WHEN TRANSPORTING TO MECHANIC JUST BEFORE ENGINE FAILURE. REPAIR REQUIRES ENGINE REPLACEMENT (>$5000). JOINT IN WIPER CORRODED ON DRIVERS SIDE. DRIVER HAD JUST STARTED THE CAR AND NEEDED TO USE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS DUE TO RAIN.
DRIVING MY 2013 CHEVY EQUINOX WITH UNDER 60,000 MILES DURING RAIN/SNOW AND WIPERS QUIT UNEXPECTEDLY CLOSE TO HOME. YET ANOTHER PERSON WITH THE 2013 CHEVY EQUINOX 2.4L ENGINE WITH THE EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. MY WIFE (WHO DRIVES THIS VEHICLE) CALLED ME IN TEARS TODAY, STATING THAT THE EQUINOX STARTED MAKING ALL KINDS OF NOISE, AND DRIVING HORRIBLY, SO SHE WENT TO A NEARBY GARAGE, AND THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD ALMOST NO OIL - AND THAT THIS WAS THE 2ND OR 3RD EQUINOX THAT THEY HAD SEEN IN THE LAST 2-3 WEEKS THAT CAME IN WITH ALMOST NO OIL. THIS VEHICLE HAS 69,075 MILES ON IT, AND WE ARE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS. ALL SERVICE (OTHER THAN TODAY'S) HAVE BEEN HANDLED AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN GM, AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, AND FINDING THAT SO MANY OTHERS WERE HAVING THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE. GM NEEDS TO STEP UP AND FIX THIS!!
HAD OIL CHANGE ON FEB 5, 2019. FEB. 9, 2019 HAD SOMEONE ASK IF I HAD AN OIL LEAK. I SAW A TRAIL OF OIL UP MY DRIVEWAY AND INTO MY GARAGE. THERE WAS A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL UNDER MY VEHICLE. LUCKILY IT WAS STATIONARY IN THE GARAGE. IF I HADN'T HAD SOMEONE SEE IT BEFORE I DROVE IT AGAIN MY ENGINE WOULD HAVE SEIZED UP. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS THAT CAME ON. WEATHER CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN BAD THIS YEAR WITH RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES, SNOW AND ICY ROADWAYS. IF I HAD DRIVEN THIS WITH, MY NINE-YEAR-OLD SON AND HAD BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY OR INTERSTATE I DRIVE EVERYDAY IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. MY PCV CLOGGED FROM THE ACCUMULATED MOISTURE GETTING FROZEN. CHEVY HAS A SERVICE BULLETIN (#14882) ON THIS, HOWEVER MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM THAT ARE ALSO NOT INCLUDED IN THE SERVICE BULLETIN.
THE VEHICLE HAD A RECALL FOR THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FOR THE REAR WINDOW. NEVERTHELESS, THE ENGINE STARTED STALLING AND WHEN I HAD DIAGNOSTIC TEST DONE THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THEIR WERE METAL SHAVINGS GOING INTO MY OIL FROM A DEFECTIVE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO HICCUP ON THE STREET AND STOPPED IN FRONT OF MY HOME. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO JOSEPH CHEVEROLET IN CINCINNATI WERE SERVICE MEMBER TOLD I MUST BE MISTAKEN AND THAT GM HAD NO RECALLS. I EXPLAINED HE MUST BE MISTAKEN AND THEY COULD KEEP THEIR FAULTY PRODUCT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE OIL WAS LOW. ADDITIONAL OIL WAS ADDED, AND THE CHECK ENGINE AND OIL INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PINEGAR CHEVROLET IN REPUBLIC (769 U S 60, REPUBLIC, MO 65738, (417) 233-0206) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE MAIN SEAL WAS BLOWN AND THE PVC NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REPAIRS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER TSB NUMBER: 14882. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT AN ADJUSTER WOULD VERIFY THE DIAGNOSIS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
DRIVING WHEN THE CHECK EGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK TO THE MECHANIC HAD NO ENGINE OIL. NOT DUE FOR OIL CHANGE EITHER. O2 UPSTREAM REPLACED AND PISTONS FILLED OF CARBON . MECHANIC ADVISE TO GET RID OF CAR B/C BAD OIL CONSUMPTION, WILL CRACK ENGINE EVENTUALLY. CAR ONLY HAS 70,000 MILES
I OWN A 2013 CHEV. EQUINOX THAT I PURCHASED BRAND NEW. I USED MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR ALL MY REGULAR MAINTENANCE AS RECOMMENDED. SOMEWHERE AROUND 60,000 MILES I MENTIONED TO MY SERVICE TECH THAT MY CAR WAS MAKING A KNOCKING AND TICKING NOISE AND APPEARED TO BE LOW ON OIL. HE CONDUCTED THE REG. OIL CHANGE AND SAID ALL LOOKED GOOD. MY OIL CONSUMPTION CONTINUED TO INCREASE WITH NO LOW OIL INDICATOR LIGHT EVER COMING ON. I WAS HAVING TO ADD OIL BETWEEN REG. OIL CHANGES WITH NO HELP FROM THE DEALERSHIP. AT JUST OVER 100,000 MILES, I MENTIONED TO MY SERVICE TECH AGAIN THAT IT WAS BECOMING A HASSLE ALWAYS HAVING TO BUT OIL IN MY CAR BETWEEN SERVICES. HE SAID HE COULD DO A OIL CONSUMPTION TEST, BUT GM WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING BECAUSE IT WAS OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY. I INFORMED HIM THAT I HAD MENTIONED IT TO HIM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS JUST TO LEARN HE NEVER MADE A NOTE ON MY RECORDS ABOUT IT. HE CHANGED THE OIL AND ASKED ME TO COME BACK AFTER SO MANY MILES. I WENT BACK AS REQUESTED KNOWING IT WAS LOW BECAUSE OF THE TICKING NOISE AND HE SAID IT WAS WITHIN THE NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION BASED ON GM. HE THEN ASKED ME TO COME BACK AGAIN AFTER SO MANY MILES WHICH I DID. I KNOW IT WAS LOW BECAUSE I CHECKED IT MYSELF BEFORE GOING BY AND IT WAS ONLY SHOWING ON THE TIP OF THE DIP STICK. AGAIN HE SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT BEING WITHIN THE NORMAL CONSUMPTION BASED ON GM. HE THEN ADDED OIL PER MY REQUEST. STILL AT NO POINT DID MY OIL LIGHT EVER COME ON. AFTER GETTING NO WHERE WITH THE DEALERSHIP, I DECIDED TO NO LONG HAVE MY OIL CHANGED BY THEM. BUT STILL HAVING TO BUT 2-3 QTS OF OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AND EVEN CHANGING THE OIL MORE OFTEN. I RECENTLY TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER MECHANIC TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY LEAKS AND HE SAID THAT MY ENGINE IS KNOWN TO BURN HIGH AMOUNTS OF OIL AND THERE IS NOTHING HE CAN DO TO HELP AND RECOMMENDED FILING A COMPLAINT WITH GM.
AT RANDOM THE CAR WILL IDLE ROUGH DROP RPMS SMELL LIKE IT IS LOADING UP ON FUEL AND DIE THE CAR ALWAYS RESTARTS.
HAS EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION DUE TO FAULTY PISTON RINGS
SMELLED BURNING OIL IN GARAGE. CHECKED UNDER VEHICLE AND NOTICED LARGE PUDDLE OF OIL AND UNDERSIDE OF REAR ENGINE SOAKED WITH IT. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP OF PURCHASE. WAS NOTIFIED THAT IT WAS PCV VALUE HAVING MOISTURE/CONDENSATION IN IT AND FREEZING. THIS OCCURRENCE PUT PRESSURE ON THE ENGINE AND SEALS. THE REAR SEAL CONNECTING TO THE TRANSMISSION IS WHAT FAILED. IT WAS A COLD DAY. THE CAR WAS IN A PARKING LOT UNTIL END OF SHIFT. MY WIFE SAID IT DID NOT START AS FAST AS IT NORMALLY DOES. THERE WAS NOT SHUTTERING OF THE ENGINE, NO LOUD CLACKING SOUND AND NOT ONE LIGHT ICON LIT UP. I NOTICED A TRAIL OF OIL INTO THE GARAGE IN OUR DRIVEWAY BUT NO TRAIL IN THE STREET. I ASSUME IT HAD JUST OCCURRED WHEN SHE WAS ARRIVING HOME. SHE WAS BRAKING TO TURN INTO OUR DRIVEWAY. HER ROUTE FROM WORK IS PRIMARILY STATE ROADS WITH SPEEDS OF 35-55 MPH AND VERY OFTEN HAS DEER CROSSING THE ROADS AS THERE ARE NO ROAD NOISE BARRIERS OR TALL FENCING. SHE ARRIVING HOME AT THE NORMAL TIME BUT I WAS ABLE TO PICK UP OUR SONS. SO SHE WAS ABLE TO JUST GO HOME. THE WEATHER WAS COLD (APPROX. 6-8 DEGREES). I HAVE NO REPORTS, INVOICES OR PHOTOS AS THE CAR IS CURRENTLY STILL IN THE SHOP SINCE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 1ST. TODAY IS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 6TH 2019. I HAVE FOUND A LOT OF INFORMATION ONLINE REGARDING THIS ISSUE, TSB #14882. SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON.
THE VEHICLE BLEW A REAR MAIN SEAL FROM AN ACCUMULATION OF SLUDGE IN THE MANIFOLD. GM KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HAD ISSUED A SELECT SPECIAL COVERAGE THAT DOESN'T COVER ALL EQUINOXES MODEL YEARS 2010-2014. THIS VEHICLE LEFT THE DRIVER STRANDED AND HAD TO BE TOWED. THE REPAIR COST WAS OVER 2100 DOLLARS AND GM HAS REFUSED TO COVER THE BILL. THE ISSUE WAS WELL KNOWN TO THEM AS A DESIGN DEFECT YET THEY ARE REFUSING THE REPAIR STATING THAT IT HAPPENED OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY. APPARENTLY ONLY CERTAIN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WERE COVERED UNDER THEIR SPECIAL COVERAGE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND TOWED TO DIANE SAUER CHEVROLET (700 NILES RD SE, WARREN, OH 44483, (330) 373-1600) AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR MAIN SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE AS LISTED IN TSB NUMBER: 14882. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 88,000.
MY EQUINOX REDUCED ENGINE POWER WHILE DRIVING. PRIOR TO THIS THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OF ANY KIND. I WAS TOLD IT WAS DOWN 3 QUARTS OF OIL AND THAT THERE WAS A LEAK FROM REAR SEAL. MY MECHANIC ADVISED TOWING TO THE DEALERSHIP AS THERE ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS OF THIS IN THE EQUINOX'S AS WELL AS A "14882 SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT" OFFERED BY GENERAL MOTORS. THIS SPECIAL ADJUSTMENT ARE FOR THOSE EQUINOX'S THAT EXPERIENCE HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION AND MAY EXPERIENCE A FROZEN OR PLUGGED POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM. THIS CAUSES INCREASE CRANKCASE PRESSURE LEADING TO A REAR CRANKSHAFT SEAL OIL LEAK. IF THE OIL LEAK IS NOT NOTICED AND CONDITION IS NOT CORRECTED, CONTINUED DRIVING CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. GM STATED ON MY RECEIPT THE CAUSE OF MY PROBLEM WAS, "MOISTURE FROZE IN THE PCV SYSTEM CAUSING THE CRANKCASE TO OVERPRESSURIZE". HOWEVER, MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT EVEN THOUGH I WAS WITHIN THE MILEAGE AND YEAR. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY WARNING LIGHTS OF BEING LOW IN OIL AND NO ENGINE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHTS. THERE HAVE BEEN NO RECALLS RELATED TO THESE ISSUES.
ON JANUARY 31 MY EQUINOX EXPERIENCED A FROZEN PCV SYSTEM, A KNOWN ISSUE IN 2010-2014 EQUINOX VEHICLES. THE ENGINE DEVELOPED AN OIL LEAK AND EXCESSIVE CRANKCASE PRESSURE WHICH BLEW THE REAR MAIN SEAL RENDERING MY VEHICLE INOPERABLE. I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, AN APPROXIMATE 10 MILE DRIVE, COMPRISED OF A SHORT DRIVE ON A FREEWAY AND THE MAJORITY OF THE TRIP ON CITY STREETS. THE PROBLEM STARTED AFTER I EXITED THE FREEWAY. I ACCELERATED FROM A STOP AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL AND I NOTICED THAT MY CAR SOUNDED LOUDER THAN USUAL. AT JUST A FEW MILES FROM MY HOME TROUBLE LIGHTS (TRACTION CONTROL AND ENGINE) ILLUMINATED ON MY DASH ALONG WITH THE "ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED" MESSAGE. THINKING I HAD A TRACTION CONTROL ISSUE I CONTINUED TO DRIVE TO MY HOME, A MERE 2 CITY BLOCKS. AT THAT TIME THE OIL PRESSURE MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE SCREEN. I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY AND OIL DROPPED WHERE I STOPPED. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC AND HE INFORMED ME OF THIS ISSUE AND WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR.
IN MOTION DRIVING TO WORK ENTERING ONTO TWO LANE HIGHWAY DECELERATED AND NOT ABLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED LIMIT. NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON CAR STARTED SOUNDING LOUDER. PULL OFF AND SHUT THE CAR OFF GOT OUT AND SAW OIL RUNNING OUT FROM UNDER THE CAR. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP.
EXTREME COLD TEMPS (-20BELOW), WHILE DRIVING HEARD POPPING SOUND, 2 MILES LATER, CAR STARTED TO RUN ROUGH WENT BACK HOME, OIL WAS DRAINING OUT. CAR WAS PARKED, PUT MORE OIL IN, DRAINED RIGHT OUT. MECHANIC STATED THE CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL SEAL GASKET HAD BLOWN. THIS IS REFERENCED IN GM SB14882. MY VIN WASN'T COVERED EVEN THOUGH WHAT HAPPENED WAS EXACTLY AS STATED IN THE SB. SB WAS UPDATED ON FEB 4, 2019 (#19-NA-021) , AGAIN I WAS STILL NOT COVERED. I HAD HEARD OVER 200 MICHIGAN EQUINOX CUSTOMERS WERE IN SERVICE DUE TO SAME ISSUE AND THE COLD TEMPERATURES WE WERE EXPERIENCING IN MICHIGAN. THE AMOUNT OF OIL I HAVE TO PUT IN, 2 QRTS EVERY 2 WEEKS IS ALSO A CONCERN.

IT'S A VERY KNOWN PROBLEM CAUSED BY POOR GM ENGINEERING AND I FEEL THEY'RE TOO EMBARRASSED TO COVER ALL VEHICLES. THEY ONLY COVER 'CERTAIN' ONES. I DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHEN THIS HAPPENED INDICATIONS BY TRIALS AND SPOTS OF OIL ON THE STREETS SAY THAT IT HAPPENED AFTER I RETURNED HOME WHEN I STARTED TO MY NEXT DESTINATION AS DESCRIBED LATER. IT WAS ON CITY STREETS IF THIS ANALYSIS IS CORRECT. I WAS LIKELY GOING STRAIGHT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE TWO REASONS - THE ENGINE COULD LOCK UP CAUSING RAPID DECELERATION AND/OR LOSS OF CONTROL CAUSING AN ACCIDENT - IF I HAD BEEN STRANDED AT THE TEMPERATURES OF -4 TO +9 DEGREES AND WIND CHILLS -15 TO -30 I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN DANGER. ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 30, 2019 LEFT FOR WORK. THE TEMPERATURE WAS -4. AFTER A SHORT DISTANCE I STOPPED AT MY THIRD STOP SIGN AND THE ENGINE SURGED WHILE IDLING, AT THE NEXT STOP ALL SEEMED FINE AND FROM THERE TO WOK ALL SEEMED FINE. I LEFT WORK AND DROVE 2.8 MILES AND THE ENGINE SURGED BRIEFLY AND DIED. I DROVE ABOUT 27 MILES HOME, NO APPARENT PROBLEMS. I DROVE TO ANOTHER LOCATION JUST OVER ONE MILE AWAY. ON MY WAY BACK HOME, ABOUT MILE FROM HOME THE ENGINE REDUCED POWER NOTIFICATION APPEARED AS WELL AS A MESSAGE ABOUT THE TRACTION CONTROL. JUST AS I ROUNDED THE CORNER ON WHICH MY HOUSE IS THE LOW OIL PRESSURE MESSAGE CAME ON. THE REAR MAIN SEAL HAD BLOWN OUT. THIS CAR HAS 67,477 MILES. IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY 11/25/18. TWO MECHANICS SAID IT IS COMMON IN SEVERAL GM VEHICLES. ONE SAID HE COULD NOT BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF CALLS HE GOT ABOUT THIS ISSUE, BECAUSE OF THE BULLETIN HE WAS SENDING PEOPLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR COVERAGE UNDER A SPECIAL WARRANTY, HE COULD NOT BELIEVE IT WHEN I TOLD HIM CHEVY WOULD NOT HELP ME SINCE MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED SINCE IT IS THE SAME VEHICLE, SAME ENGINE AS THOSE IN THE BULLETIN 14882, DOCUMENT ID 4098165. MY DEALER SAID THAT HE ARGUED WITH GM THAT THESE ARE THE SAME CARS AND ENGINES BUT THEY WOULD GIVE NO ASSISTANCE. HE SAID IT WAS A BAD DESIGN AND THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT IT.

THE VEHICLE STARTED JERKING ON THE HWY AND THE OIL LIGHT WENT ON. THE CAR HAS REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND WE COULD NEVER IMAGINE A 5YR OLD ONE OWNER VEHICLE WITH 36,000 MILES WOULD HAVE OIL LEAKING OUT OF THE REAR MAIN SEAL. ENTERED THE VIN NUMBER TO SEE IF OUR VEHICLE WAS LISTED UNDER RECALL 14882 AND NOTHING IS COMING UP. WE WERE TOLD BY OUR MECHANIC FRIEND THAT THERE WERE 5 OTHER EQUINOX'S WITH THIS ISSUE DURING THE CRAZY COLD WEATHER WE HAD RECENTLY. $1,400 LATER. PCV VALVE BULLETIN 14882. CAR HAS BEEN USING EXCESSIVE BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. SINCE IT HAD 50K MILES. AT THE TIME THE DEALER SAID PER CHEVY .5 QUARTS IS NORMAL EVERY 2500 MILES. RECENTLY THE OIL HAS BECOME VERY DIRTY AND IM ADDING BETWEEN 1 QUART EVERY 1000 MILES. TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC SAID IT APPEARS TO BE RELATED. WENT TO CHEVY DEALER AND SAID THIS BULLETIN DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VIN. ITS WITHIN THE SAME YEARS, SAME ISSUE BUT CHEVY WILL NOT COVER IT (SPOKE TO CHEVY DIRECTLY).

THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALER AWAITING THE CONTACT'S AUTHORIZATION TO BE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
TAKATA RECALL. WHILE DRIVING IN COLD WEATHER ON A HIGHWAY, MY CAR'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER GETTING OFF THE FREEWAY, IT START TO LURCH WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT. A FEW MOMENTS LATER THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED AND REPAIR. THE REPAIR COST $1,800 FOR A BLOWN OIL SEAL. AFTER RESEARCH ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE AND PVC VALVE. CHEVY SERVICE BULLETIN NO. 14882 DATE MARCH 2015.
DRIVING DOWN INTERSTATE 55, NOTICED OIL ON BACK WINDOW THOUGHT IT WAS FROST. ARRIVED AT DESTINATION AND SAW SMOKE COMING FROM HOOD, LOOKED UNDERNEATH VEHICLE AND NOTICED OIL POURING OUT THE UNDERNEATH. NO OIL LIGHT OR ENGINE LIGHT EVER CAME ON EVEN THOUGH I LOST OVER 3 QUARTS OF OIL. HAD TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THE PVC FROZE UP AND CAUSED THE REAR MAIN TO BLOW OUT. COST ME $2400, HAD15500 MILES AND FOLLOWED ALL GM MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.
