I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE AND SUDDENLY DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING", AND THE STEERING BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. I PULLED OVER, TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED FOR A MINUTE, THEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE & WAS WORKING FINE. THEN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING". NOW I HAVE TO TAKE MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC AND PAY FOR THE REPAIR. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE HHR & CHEVROLET COBALT HAVE THE SAME SIMILAR POWER STEERING SYSTEM, AND A RECALL FOR THE CHEVROLET COBALT HAS BEEN ISSUED. WHY NOT FOR THE CHEVROLET HHR? THANKS. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET HHR. THE CONTACT NOTISTATED THAT THE KEY COULD NOT BE TURNED WHILE INSIDE THE IGNITION AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE SHUT OFF. THE CONTACT HAD TO DISCONECT THE FUEL PUMP FUSE FROM THE FUEL BOX IN ORDER TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 34,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 46,000.

THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS TIMES AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURE. A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED WHICH WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE CODE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE APPROXIMATE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO REPLACED THE DOOR HANDLE BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE ALSO FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TO BE TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOR A SECOND REPAIR TO REPLACE A SECOND DOOR HANDLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,505.
I COULD NOT TURN OFF THE IGNITION AFTER STARTING THE CAR. DEALER WHO REPLACED THE SWITCH TOLD ME THE "IGNITION HAD EXPLODED, THAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WITH THIS CAR." HE WOULD NOT SHOW ME THE UNIT HE HAD REMOVED, AND SAID "THEY HAVE TO SEND IT THE GM." IT WAS NOT A GM WARRANTY REPLACEMENT. I HAD TO PAY THE DEDUCTIBLE FOR THE AFTERMARKET SERVICE CONTRACT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THE CONTACT DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY CABLE IN ORDER TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,000.
DOOR HANDLES ARE JUNK. DRIVER SIDE BROKE AT 58K. SWITCHED WITH REAR DRIVER. AT 74K THAT ONE BROKE. 75K PASSENGER SIDE BROKE. HANDLES ARE BRITTLE. I HAVE NEVER ENCOUNTER SUCH A PROBLEM WITH ANY OTHER CAR. IT IS AN "AMERICAN" CAR AND PEOPLE EXPECT A CERTAIN STANDARD SO I AM REALLY DISAPPOINTED. *TR
DRIVING ON INTERSTATE DOING 65 MPH, POWER STEERING INDICATOR WENT OFF AND LOST MY POWER STEERING. SINCE THE FIRST TIME, IT CONTINUES TO DO THE SAME THING, SOMETIMES 1-2/DAY SOMETIMES TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT IN ONE TRIP. I HAVE TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART FOR THE POWER STEERING TO WORK AGAIN. *JS

I WAS AT WALMART MY KEY WOULD NOT TURN AT ALL. I CALLED A CHEVY DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THAT IT WAS A RECALL BUT NOT ON 2010 JUST 2009. I HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED AT MY COST. TODAY JANUARY 31 MY KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION SWITCH WHICH I'M FOR SURE IS DEFECTIVE PARTS ON GMS ACCOUNT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT MANY OWNERS OF COMPLAINED ON ALL OVER GOOGLE. *TT

ON 1/13/2012 WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP, I LOST THE POWER STEERING TO MY HHR AND THE DIC DISPLAYED "POWER STEERING". I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD, TURNED IT OFF, AND LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD TO SEE IF I COULD FIND ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE BELTS. NOTHING WAS FOUND AND I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND THE PROBLEM WAS GONE. TWO WEEKS LATER, THE PROBLEM HAS RETURNED. TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING IT WILL RESOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT TIME, THEN ONCE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AGAIN. THE POWER STEERING MOTOR IN THE HHR IS THE SAME MODEL NOTED IN THE RECALL FOR THE 2010 CHEVY COBOLT NOTED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE10005. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE ALL OVER THE INTERNET. WHILE I INTEND TO HAVE THE PROBLEM REPAIRED, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT INVESTIGATION FOR THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE IS CONSIDERED AS THE COLBOLT AND HHR SHARE THE SAME FRAME AND ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL IN SCHEMATIC MAKEUP. *TT
WHILE DRIVING APX. 25MPH THE WARNING "DING SOUND" CAME ON & THE DISPLAY READ "POWER STEERING". BY PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND TURNING THE KEY OFF & TURNING IT BACK ON & PUTTING IN DRIVE, IT TEMPORARILY REMEDIES THE PROBLEM BUT NOT FOR LONG. SOMETIMES THIS HAS TO BE DONE 15-20 TIMES. THIS IS DRIVING IN TOWN OR INTERSTATE, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. WE PURCHASED THE CAR IN JULY 30, 2011 WITH 45K MILES ON IT. EIGHT MONTHS LATER, WE STARTED HAVING THIS PROBLEM. I'VE SEEN MANY FORUMS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT AND FEEL THAT THERE DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON THIS MODEL. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND SOUNDS LIKE A MALFUNCTION FROM THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY SHOULD STEP UP AND RECALL. THIS NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY! *TR *JS
I'VE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE 29 OTHER NOTED COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE, HAVE HAD. POWER STEERING WORKS FINE ONE MINUTE THEN WARNING CHIME SOUNDS, POWER STEERING MSG. APPEARS AT THE SAME TIME STEERING GOES OUT. I HAVE TO RESET IT BY TURNING OFF AND ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. SOME TIMES IT HAPPENS AT VARIOUS TIMES IN A DAY, TO NOTHING FOR A FEW MONTHS. I WAS KINDA HOPING THE PROBLEM FIXED ITSELF, BUT HAH, WISHFUL THINKING ON MY PART, CAUSE IT'S DOING IT AGAIN. HOW MANY MORE COMPLAINTS HAS TO HAPPEN BEFORE THIS PROBLEM IS RECALLED?? 2010 CHEVROLET HHR WITH 19,060 MILES. IGNITION WAS STUCK IN ON POSITION WITH ENGINE RUNNING. DROVE TO DEALERSHIP AND THE IGNITION ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. I WAS OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP WITHIN ONE HOUR AND THE REPAIR WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

MY 2010 HHR HAS EXPERIENCED AN IGNITION ISSUE AS WELL. I CANNOT GET THE KEY TO TURN BACK TO THE OFF POSITION. I GOT HOME FROM WORK AT MIDNIGHT, PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND WHEN I TRIED TO SHUT THE CAR OFF IT WOULD NOT TURN BACK. THE ONLY OPTION I HAD WAS TO PULL THE ECM FUSE AND DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (OR LET IT RUN OUT OF GAS). THE GEAR SHIFTER WILL ALLOW ME TO SHIFT BETWEEN ALL GEARS BUT IT WON'T TURN OFF. ALL THE ELECTRICAL STAY ON, I HAVE ONLY OWNED THIS CAR FOR 3 MONTHS. *TR
MY 2010 CHEVY HHR HAS EXPERIENCED AN IGNITION ISSUE. THE KEY, WHEN THE CAR IS SET TO PARK, WILL NOT DISENGAGE. IT REMAINS ON, WITH THE ONLY OPTION BEING TO LET THE CAR RUN OUT OF GAS/THE BATTERY TO DRAIN. THE KEY WILL TURN (AS IF TO START THE CAR), AND THE GEAR CAN BE SHIFTED FROM PARK TO REVERSE, NEUTRAL, ETC., BUT WILL NOT TURN OFF. ALL SYSTEMS STAY ON, POTENTIALLY BURNING OUT ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OR CAUSING PERMANENT ENGINE DAMAGE. THE ONLY WAY TO SAFELY ADDRESS THE IMMEDIATE ISSUE IS TO DISENGAGE THE FUSES UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL, WHICH MANY CONSUMERS MAY BE UNABLE TO DO. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET HHR. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE DECELERATED TO 40 MPH WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER TWICE FOR THE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FRONT SEAT DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES TO THE RIGHT HAND. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER AND AND REAR SEAT PASSENGER BOTH SUFFERED MINOR HEAD INJURIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
POWER STEERING WENT OUT AT 42,000 PURCHASED VEHICLE AT 38,500 MILES. VEHICLE IS ALL ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY STREET WHEN MY CAR STARTING BEEPING(WARNING CHIME) AND THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT TO PULL MY CAR OVER TO THE NEXT SIDE STREET AND FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DO SO. I FOUND I COULD TURN MY CAR OFF AND WAIT 30 SEC AND THE STEERING WOULD COME BACK, BUT WITHIN 3 MIN. I WOULD LOSE IT AGAIN AND I WOULD HAVE TO KEEP REPEATING THE PROCESS. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE CAR IS NOW AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE STEERING IS UNSAFE IN THIS CAR. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT THE CONTACT HAD NOT HEARD BACK FROM THE DEALER WITH A SOLUTION. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 17,000.
TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO SHUT VEHICLE OFF AND THE ENGINE KEPT RUNNING REMOVED THE FUSE AND LATER TOOK TO THE DEALER WHO REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH ALL WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
KEY IS STUCK IN THE CYLINDER WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. I CAN NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE, ON A SUNDAY NIGHT. NO OPTIONS, BUT TO LEAVE THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE CAR RUNNING AND UNLOCKED. COST WAS $499.50 TO REPLACE, PLUS LOSS OF WORK THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. TODAY'S DATE IS NOVEMBER 30, 2013, HAPPENED AGAIN WITH THE CAR OFF, (ABOUT TWO YEARS LATER). I FOUND HUNDREDS OF REPORTED INCIDENTS OF THIS KNOWN DEFECT ON THE INTERNET AND IS NOT CONSIDERED A REASON FOR THE MANUFACTURE TO RECALL THE DEFECT, AS IT DOES NOT MEET A SAFETY ISSUE AS OUTLINED BY NHTSA. *TR

THE BATTERY HAD TO BE DISCONNECTED IN ORDER TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS OR WARRANTIES. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.
THE KEY IS STUCK IN THE "ON" POSITION AND THERE IS NO WAY TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF UNLESS YOU PULL THE FUEL PUMP FUSE OR DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. *TR

I WENT TO TURN OF MY CAR AFTER TAKING MY WIFE TO WORK, AND THE IGNITION WOULD NOT TURN OFF. I HAD TO SIT IN MY CAR FOR 5 HRS AT THE REPAIR SHOP TILL THEY OPENED. THIS REPAIR COST ME $452.00 WAS TOLD THAT THE IGNITION WAS BAD AND THE HOUSING THAT THE TUMLERS SET IN WAS BAD. THE TRACTION LIGHT COMES ON AND AFTER ABOUT 2 MIN WILL GO OFF. TIRE MONITOR FOR TIRE PRESSURE COMES ON AND GOES OFF NOW IT IS OFF FOR THE LEFT REAR TIRE. *KB
THE KEY WILL NOT TURN TO THE OFF POSITION, CAN NOT TURN OFF VEHICLE, HAVE TO DISCONNECT FUEL PUMP POWER AND THEN DISCONNECT THE VEHICLE BATTERY. MFG KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND WILL NOT DO ANYTHING WITH OUT CHARGING LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY. I HAVE BEEN A MECHANIC FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE NOT SEEN THIS PROBLEM EVER. I WANT TO SEE A RECALL TO CORRECT THIS VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER WHICH WOULD COST $240. THERE WERE NO RECALLS RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
WHEN DRIVING THE POWER STEERING STOPS FUNCTIONING AND THE STEERING BECOMES DIFFICULT TO TURN. WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE POWER STEERING IS OPERATIVE FOR A SHORT TIME AND THEN FAILS AGAIN.

WENT TO TURN IGNITION KEY TO THE OFF POSITION AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF PULLED FUSE. TOOK VEHICLE THE THE DEALER SHIP REPLACED IGNITION LOCK WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
KEY STUCK IN IGNITION IN 2010 HHR. COULD NOT TURN CAR OFF OR REMOVE KEY. HAD TO TAKE TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE A NEW IGNITION PUT IN. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY GMC, BUT THEY WILL NOT COVER REPAIRS OR ISSUE RECALL. THE IGNITION SWITCHES THEY USE ARE DEFECTED AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. SHOULD NOT FAIL ON NEW VEHICLES. COULD BE A DANGER AND CAUSE HARM. *KB

BOUGHT A USED 2010 CHEVROLET HHR ON JULY 09, 2011 FROM A MAJOR DEALER. ON JULY 23,2011, DROVE TWO MILES TO SUPER MARKET. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF AND I COULD NOT REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. FINALLY HAD TO DISCONNECT BATTERY TO STOP THE ENGINE FROM RUNNING. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO CHEVROLET DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER WAS BROKEN. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY AND WAS REPAIRED AT NO COST. THE IGNITION INTERLOCK CYLINDER IN OUR 2010 CHEVROLET HHR FAILED AND THE KEY BECAME STUCK. WE WERE UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY OR TURN IT TO THE "OFF" POSITION. I HAD TO REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP FUSE AND BATTERY TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. THIS ALSO DISABLED THE AIRBAGS IN THE VEHICLE. GM STATED THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM AND HAVE ISSUED "ADVISORIES" BUT NO RECALL SO THE CUSTOMER IS RESPONSIBLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHEVROLET HHR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEYS WERE STUCK IN THE IGNITION FOR TWO DAYS WHILE THE ENGINE STAYED ON AND WOULD NOT TURN OFF. THE ENGINE CONTINUED RUNNING FOR TWO DAYS. ON THE SECOND DAY, THE CONTACT REMOVED A FUSE TO TURN THE ENGINE OFF. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE CONTACTED THE DEALER AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER WHO REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A CLAIM WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

WE WERE DRIVING OUR HHR ON A CLEAR SUNNY DAY AND THE ECS CAME ON AND OFF CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE AND BECOME UNCONTROLLABLE UNTIL WE PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND SHUT THE HHR OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON, THIS WAS THE FIRST INDECENT. WE TOOK THE HHR TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER, THIS WORKED FOR ALMOST A YEAR BEFORE IT STARTED DOING THIS AGAIN. WE HAVE ONCE AGAIN TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE HHR, I ASKED THEM WHAT TO DO BECAUSE THE HHR IS UNSAFE WHEN THE ECS FAILS BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE, AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE NO ANSWERS. *TR
VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN OFF WHEN IGNITION KEY WAS TURNED HAD TO REMOVE THE FUSE. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE SWITCH IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. *TR
THE 2010 CHEVY HHR KEY BECAME STUCK IN THE IGNITION WHILE THE SUV WAS RUNNING. WE WERE UNABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY AT ALL. IT WAS VERY SCARY FOR US. THE SUV WAS TURNED ON AT 6:00 A.M. AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE ONE MORNING LAST YEAR THE AIRBAG LIGHT COME ON AFTER GOING TO THE DEALER HE SAYS THE HARNESS UNDER THE SEAT WAS LOOSE AND UNPLUGGED IT AND REPLUGED IT AND ALSO CLEARED THE COMPUTER,,, WELL AFTER 6 MONTHS LATER THE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN,,,THIS TIME IT COST ME $218 FOR A NEW HARNESS = $18 FOR THE HARNESS AND $200 FOR LABOR $200 FOR LABOR ??? OR I WOULDN'T GET MY INSPECTION STICKER FOR MY CAR AFTER LOADS OF COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ ON THE HHR NETWORK AND THE FACT THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT WORK WHEN THIS LIGHT IS ON,,,WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL ON THESE BAD HARNESSES. *TR
FIRST THE CAR WOULDN'T START, BRAKES SMELT ON FIRE, ALSO NOISY BRAKES, CAR NEVER STARTED UNTIL 4 TURNS, CAR PULLS A FEW INCHES TO RIGHT WITH NO CONTROL OF STEERING CAR WOULD GO DEAD AT ANYTIME EVEN WHILE DRIVING. ELECTRICAL WOULD HAPPEN RANDOM ON SUNROOF, WIPERS, WINDOWS, AND BLINKERS. SCARY CAR, ESPECIALLY IF I WERE GOING DOWN A HILL WITH NO CONTROL. 2 YEARS LATER DEALERSHIP COULD NEVER RESOLVE PROBLEM. PAID $17,000 AND NEEDS $3,200 IN WORK. NOT SURE IF I FIX THESE PROBLEMS THE CAR WILL WORK PROPERLY. STRESSFUL CAR AND DANGEROUS. *TR
I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE TO SHIFT FROM THE PARK POSITION INTO DRIVE ON A FEW OCCASIONS. HAD TO SHUT THE CAR OFF, RESTART AND THEN PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN FIRMLY AND HOLD.
