RUSTED OUT STEEL BRAKE LINES. LOST BRAKES HAD TO BE TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP. LUCKY I DID NOT CRASH INTO ANYONE. CHEVROLET DEALER DOES NOT WANT TO HEAR ANY OF IT THEY SAY THE TRUCK IS TEN YEARS OLD. *TR
WHILE IN TRAFFIC I PUSHED MY BRAKE PEDAL DOWN HARD TO STOP AND IT WENT TO THE FLOOR. SOME BRAKING RESISTANCE WAS FELT BY THE VEHICLE BUT I STILL HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THERE WAS ONLY A MINOR SCRATCH ON THE CAR I HIT BECAUSE I ALSO HIT THE PARKING BRAKE ONE THE BRAKE PEDAL DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT TO INDICATE A PROBLEM BUT WHEN I PULLED OFF THE ROAD THE BRAKE LINE GOING TO THE REAR BRAKES WAS SQUIRTING FLUID. ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ON THE CAR SHOWED HEAVY SIGNS OF RUST. *TR
BRAKE LINES HAVE RUSTED AND RUPTURED ON 3 OCCASSIONS AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS OF THE BRAKE LINES. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON CITY STREET.
IN WYOMING, TRAVELING I90 TO HYW 16 MOUNTAIN PASS...7 PER CENT GRADE....AFTER TWO MILES ENGINE OVERHEATED AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO LET ENGINE COOL DOWN...HAD TO TAKE ANOTHER ROUTE TO BYPASS MOUNTAIN. GOOGLED DURAMAX OVERHEATING AND FOUND THIS WAS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THE 2004 DURAMAX DIESEL..DESIGN PROBLEM PREVENTED ADEQUATE AIR FROM ENTERING ENGINE...SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL OR AT LEAST GM SHOULD HAVE OFFERED A SOLUTION... *JS
I WAS DRIVING DOWN MY HILL WHEN MY BRAKE PEDAL UNEXPECTEDLY WENT TO THE FLOOR. I COASTED THE REST OF THE WAY DOWN THE HILL IN LOW (AUTOMATIC TRANS) AND TURNED AROUND AND COASTED BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY WHERE I COULD CHECK IT OUT. MY REAR MAIN BRAKE LINE WAS RUSTED IN TWO AND THE OTHERS WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED. THE METAL ON MY EXHAUST HAS NO RUST AFTER ALL OF THESE MILES BUT THE BRAKE LINES ARE OBVIOUSLY MADE OF A FAR CHEAPER METAL. I READ A LOT OF ARTICLES WHERE THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS FROM 1999 TO 2003. GM, OLD OR NEW NEEDS TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND RECALL THESE CHEAP BRAKES. *JS
THE BRAKES HAVE STOPPED WORKING ON THIS VEHICLE, WHICH IS NOT PARTICULARLY UNEXPECTED GIVEN THE VEHICLE HAS 155,000 MILES. HOWEVER WHEN WE TRIED TO PURCHASE NEW PARTS WE WERE ADVISED THAT GENERAL MOTORS NO LONGER SUPPORTS OR MANUFACTURES THE NECESSARY PARTS ( ROTORS,PUMPS, ETC) FOR THE YEAR OF VEHICLE. HOW CAN THEY SIMPLY STOP MAKING PARTS FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS JUST 10 YEARS OLD? WE WERE TOLD TO GO TO A SCRAP YARD AND SEE IF WE COULD SCROUNGE THE NECESSARY PARTS THERE ! SHOULD THEY NOT BE REQUIRED TO SUPPORT ANY VEHICLE THEY MANUFACTURE? AND NOT SIMPLY DECIDE NOT TO MAKE PARTS ANY LONGER BECAUSE IT MAY NOT BE PROFITABLE? WHAT IS GOING ON AT GM? WHAT ELSE DON'T WE KNOW ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS PRACTICES ON TOP OF THE OTHER GM SCANDALS THAT WE SEE LATELY, LEADING TO DEATH AND MAYHEM FOR INNOCENT CAR OWNERS? *TR
WRONG CLIP ON OIL PUMP IN TRANSFER CASE WEARS HOLE IN CASE . ALL THE OIL DRAINS OUT OF CASE CAUSING CATISTROPHIC FALLERS. CAUSING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR REPAIR. GM HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS AN OFFERED NO HELP. THIS COULD CAUSE REAL DANGER TO OWNER IF THIS HAPPENED IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS. THIS HAPPENED WHEN VEHICLE IS OPERATING WITH NO WARNING. MY CASE WAS FOUND BY TEC BEFORE FALL IRE MY BROTHERS FAILED ON A TRIP LEAVING HIM STRANDED.
WIFE WAS DRIVING MY 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO WITH 89764 MILES WHEN SHE WAS COMING TO A STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR SHE WENT INTO OTHER LANE TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER. THE STEEL BRAKE LINE BY THE GAS TANK HAD RUPTURED. SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A COMMON THING ON THESE TRUCKS HOWEVER CHEVROLET WON'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE UNTIL SOMEONE DIES. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL GM GUY FOR 32 YEARS UNLESS THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM AND OFFER SOME KIND OF REPAIR "I WILL NEVER BUY FROM GM AGAIN" AND I WILL ADVISE EVERYONE I KNOW TO DO THE SAME. HOWEVER I DON'T THINK THEY REALLY CARE THEY WILL JUST GET MORE MONEY FROM THE GOVERNMENT WHEN THEY CAN'T SELL CARS. *TR
I WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK ON RTE. 30 NEAR GREENSBURG, PA. AT ONE OF THE RED LIGHTS I HIT MY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I GOT STOPPED IN TIME TO NOT STRIKE THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THERE IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM WITH THESE GM VEHICLES AND THEY SHOULD BE RECALLED. WHEN I CALLED GM THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A PROBLEM FOR THE "OLD" GM AND THEY COULD DO NOTHING. THIS IS NONSENSE. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN THEM REPAIRED YET BECAUSE OF DEALING WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP. I HAVE OLDER VEHICLES WITH TWICE THE MILEAGE AND NO BRAKE LINE PROBLEMS. IT'S TIME FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
WHILE APPLYING MODERATE BRAKE PRESSURE IN HEAVY MORNING TRAFFIC ON CLEAN DRY PAVEMENT, THE BRAKE PEDAL COLLAPSED TO THE FLOOR, FOLLOWED BY REAR BRAKE LOCK-UP. I SWERVED TO AVOID A COLLISION. I WAS FORCED TO USE THE PARKING BRAKE TO MOVE TO SAFETY. INSPECTION REVEALED A METAL BRAKE LINE FAILURE. IN FACT, ALL BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. I THOUGHT THIS WAS HIGHLY UNUSUAL. HOWEVER ONE WORK COLLEAGUE AND ONE NEIGHBOR IMMEDIATELY REVEALED THAT THEY HAD SUFFERED THE SAME FAILURE ON OTHER GM TRUCKS OF THAT AGE. MY MECHANIC REPORTED DOING SEVERAL DOZEN BRAKE LINE REPLACEMENTS ON GM TRUCKS IN THE 2000 TO 2006 ERA. SURELY THIS IS A MAJOR CLASS SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR
ANTI-FREEZE ALWAYS LOW, BUT NO SIGNS OF LEAKAGE. DUE TO BAD HEADS ON VEHICLE CAUSING COOLANT TO ENTER THE ENGINE CAUSING SLUG DAMAGE, WHICH DESTROYED THE VALVES. THIS IS NOT A WEAR AND TEAR PROBLEM. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF. GM KNEW THAT THEIR MANUFACTURER OF THE HEADS KNEW IT WAS AN ISSUE AND POSTED A BULLETIN, BUT REFUSES TO FIX THE ISSUE AND RESULTING IN US TAKING IT TO A DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CONTACTED GM, ON JUNE 7, 2014 AFTER GETTING THE CAR BACK FROM THE DEALERSHIP, TO HELP WITH THE REPLACEMENT COSTS AND GOT NO HELP WHATSOEVER DUE TO AGE OF VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES. I EVEN ASKED IF THEY WOULD PAY FOR THE ENGINE IF I PAID FOR THE LABOR TO HAVE IT INSTALLED. THEY REFUSED. PLEASE GM OWN UP TO YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES, STAND BY YOUR PRODUCT, AND FIX THE ISSUES AT HAND. *TR
CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP IN GAYLORD, MICHIGAN INSTALLED DUNLOP AT20 GRANDTREK P245/75R16 TIRES ON MY HD 2500 SILVERADO PICKUP TRUCK. THIS TRUCK IS A 3/4 TON PICKUP. THESE TIRES WERE PASSENGER TIRES RATED AT 4 PLY AND NEVER DESIGNED TO BE INSTALLED ON A 3/4 TON PICKUP TRUCK. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS UNTIL JUNE 2014 WHEN I LEARNED THIS FROM THE GOODYEAR TIRE CORP. AFTER THEY SENT ME TO HAVE THEIR TIRES INSPECTED. MY TRUCK REQUIRES LT TIRES AND AT LEAST 10 PLY. CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP IN GAYLORD MADE MY TRUCK UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. ONE TIRE EVENTUALLY BLEW OUT ON THE EXPRESSWAY, FORTUNATELY A MOTORIST I WAS PASSING PULLED UP ALONG SIDE US AND SIGNALED THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM UP FRONT AT THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL AREA! QUESTION IS, WHY WOULD A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP NOT KNOW WHAT TIRES TO INSTALL ON THEIR OWN CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICKUP TRUCKS? I ASKED THEM TO PUT ON THE CORRECT TIRES ( 10 PLY - LT TIRES) ACCORDING TO THE PLACARD LOCATED ON MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR AT NO CHARGE BUT THEY REFUSED NOW WHAT ACTION IS TO BE TAKEN AGAINST A DEALERSHIP WHO WOULD DO THIS? I HAD LT TIRES ON THE TRUCK BACK IN JUNE OF 2010 WHEN I PULLED INTO THIS CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO HAVE ONE TIRE REPAIRED BECAUSE OF A SLOW LEAK. THEY TALKED ME INTO BUYING 4 NEW TIRES AND THESE ARE THE ONES THEY RECOMMENDED AND I AGREED TO. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THESE WERE NOT DESIGNED TO BE USED ON A 3/4 TON PICKUP TRUCK. I HAD 75K MILES ON THE TRUCK THEN AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THEY GAVE ME FREE ROTATIONS EVERY 6 - 8K MILES WITHOUT EVER TELLING ME THEY HAD INSTALLED INCORRECT TIRES ON MY TRUCK! THIS IS A NIGHTMARE! WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST I DO? GM HAS BEEN ZERO HELP IN THIS MATTER!!!!---I'VE TRIED BUT THEY ARE WORTHLESS! AND THIS DEALERSHIP IS PATHETIC THAT THEY WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR MISTAKE AND CORRECT IT BY REFUNDING MY MONEY BACK! I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR ANOTHER MOTORIST OR SERIOUSLY INJURED SOMEONE. *TR
THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT HAS COME ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE GMC DEALERSHIP HAS STATED THAT THERE IS NO RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DEFECT, BUT SHOULDN'T A SAFETY ITEM LIKE YOUR AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT COMING ON BE COVERED UNDER A LIFETIME WARRANTY? JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT THIS CRITICAL SAFETY FEATURE ON ALL NEWER VEHICLES SHOULD BE COVERED. SO DOES IT MEAN THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IF I'M IN AN ACCIDENT, OR IS IT JUST A MALFUNCTIONING DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT THAT HAS COME ON? I KNOW MY MODEL TRUCK IS OLDER (2004) BUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS I SHOULD THINK WOULD BE COVERED. HAVE THERE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS WITH THIS HAPPENING IN CHEVY TRUCKS? *TR
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO THE SAME VEHICLE. BRAKE LINES FROM MASTER CYL. TO ABS CORRODED AND LEAKING, LINES FROM ABS TO WHEELS CORRODED AND LEAKING, ONE DRIVER SIDE FRONT HAD A MAJOR FAILURE. I AM REPORTING THIS BECAUSE MY 17 YEAR OLD SON DRIVES THIS VEHICLE . GM SHOULD BE MADE TO REPLACE THESE BRAKE LINES WITH STAINLESS LINES, NOT BRAKE LINES THAT WILL CORRODE AGAIN AND AGAIN. LIVES ARE AT STAKE. JUST A MATTER OF TIME. *TR
SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THE TRUCK NEW THE PARKING BRAKE HAS NEVER WORKED CORRECTLY. WHILE THE BRAKE IS ENGAGED THE VEHICLE WILL STILL ROLL. AFTER NOTICING GM HAD ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS MODEL TRUCK FOR SIMILAR PROBLEMS I CONTACTED THEM. GENERAL MOTORS HAS INFORMED ME THAT MY TRUCK IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. ON THE ABOVE DATE WHILE LAUNCHING MY BOAT THE TRUCK LUNGED BACKWARD WHILE I WAS BEHIND (PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED) AS A LIFE LONG GM OWNER THIS WILL BE MY LAST. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, I WENT TO APPLY BRAKES AT STOP LIGHT WHEN BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR AND "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. WAS ABLE TO STOP BY USING EMERGENCY BRAKE. AAA TOWED TO LOCAL GAS STATION AND DISCOVERED THAT BRAKE LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED AND HAD RUPTURED AT ONE POINT. TECHNICIAN ORDERED A BRAKE LINE "KIT" FROM GM AND INSTALLED IT FOR TOTAL COST OF ABOUT $1000.00. AFTER 3 MONTHS, I NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES FELT SOFT, AND DISCOVERED IT NEEDED 3/4 CAN OF BRAKE FLUID. CLOSER INSPECTION UNDER VEHICLE DISCLOSED ANOTHER BADLY RUSTED BRAKE LINE LOCATED ON THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE FRAME & THE TRUCK BED. (IT APPEARS THE BED WILL HAVE TO BE LIFTED TO REPLACE THIS LINE. IT EITHER WASN'T PART OF THE KIT, OR THE REPAIR STATION SKIPPED REPLACING IT BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HARD TO GET TO.) MY COMPLAINT WOULD BE THAT NON-STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES WERE USED ORIGINALLY, AND THAT THE LINES THAT WERE INSTALLED ARE OF INFERIOR QUALITY THAT WILL RUST OUT AND FAIL. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK WHEN MINE FAILED BECAUSE I WASN'T GOING THAT FAST, THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME, AND IT WAS EXPERIENCED ENOUGH TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I'M NOT SURE A YOUNGER DRIVER GOING FASTER IN TRAFFIC COULD STOP BEFORE A COLLISION. *TR
RUSTED OUT BRAKE LINES FRONT AND REAR CAUSED NO BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR BRAKE LINE BROKE FROM YEARS OF CORROSION AND CHEAPLY MADE BRAKE LINES. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL CHEVY, AS YOU KNOW I'M SURE. I'VE LOOKED ONLINE A CHEVY FORUMS AND I'M NOT THE ONLY CASE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TOO. MANY, MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND ITS A BIG SAFETY CONCERN. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS NOT TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO A PARKING LOT AND CALL ME TO TELL ME WHAT WAS GOING ON. SHE TOOK IT TO A LOCAL SHOP THAT WAS CLOSE AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM. IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING FIXED AND I'M NOT REALLY TOO HAPPEN ON SPENDING $1000 GETTING IT REPAIRED. *TR
I WAS REPLACING TWO BAD O2 SENSORS AND FELT SOMETHING WET ON MY FINGERS, THAT SMELLED LIKE GAS. WHEN I STARTED THE TRUCK TO MOVE IT I NOTICE A DRIP TRAIL OFF GAS. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY MECHANIC AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE GAS LINES WERE RUSTED/ROTTED THROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE GAS LINES OR BRAKE LINES ON ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS IS VERY UNUSUAL. I THINK THESE GAS LINES AND THE BRAKE LINES I REPORTED EARLIER WERE MADE OF INFERIOR MATERIAL. I DO FEEL EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT I DID NOT CRASH OR CATCH ON FIRE. *TR
WHILE STOPPED IN A PARKING LOT THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT THE HARD BRAKE LINE HAD BURST ABOVE THE FUEL TANK ON THE LINE THAT RUNS BETWEEN THE ABS MODULE AND REAR AXLE. *TR
WIFE WAS DRIVING HER NIECE AND NEPHEW AND COMING UP ON A STOP SIGN TO CROSS A BUSY HIGHWAY. THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I CHECKED THE BRAKE LINES AND THEY ARE EXTREMELY CORRODED/RUSTED AND HAVE A FAILURE IN AT LEAST ONE LOCATION. THIS DID NOT RESULT IN A CRASH OR INJURY BUT COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN FATAL. THERE IS NO WAY THAT A TRUCK ONLY 11 YEARS OLD SHOULD HAVE BRAKE LINES RUSTING LIKE THIS AND HAVING COMPLETE FAILURE. *TR
TOWING A HEAVY BOAT AT INTERSTATE SPEED LIMIT IN KANSAS. APPLIED BRAKES TO DISENGAGE CRUISE UPON APPROACH TO EXIT RAMP. NOTICED MORE THAN USUAL PEDAL TRAVEL AND BEGAN TO PUMP TO FIND SOME BRAKES. PUMPING DID NOTHING, FULLY DEPRESSING IS ALL THAT WOULD SLOW VEHICLE. GOING DOWNHILL AND APPROACHING STOP AT END OF RAMP. ENDED UP GOING THROUGH STOP SIGN WITHOUT STOPPING. COULDN'T STOP WOULDN'T STOP. ROLLED THROUGH STOP SIGN INTERSECTING HIGHWAY SPEED 60 MPH. MADE THE TURN AND GOT STOPPED SOON AFTER SIGN BUT COULD HAVE ENDED UP IN HARMS WAY FROM INTERSECTING TRAFFIC HAD I PANICKED FROM NOT HAVING CONTROL AND WARNING LIGHTS AND ALARMS. AT LEAST I WOULD HAVE KNOWN SOMETHING WAS WRONG 5 SECONDS BEFORE GETTING T-BONED. ONCE UPON A TIME THE BODY WOULD RUST LIKE A REAR BUMPER IN ABOUT 10 YEARS. CHEVROLET SPENT MONEY TO MAKE THE PAINT LAST LONGER ON THE BODY. THAT RUST WOULD MAKE YOU GET PAINT OR A NEW TRUCK. IT WOULDN'T OR HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO INJURE OR KILL YOU OR OTHERS. BRAKE LINES ON 1950 MODEL CARS ARE STILL STRONGER THAN THESE RUSTED OUT 9 YEAR OLD LINES. THE UNIT IS DESIGNED TO RUN A COUPLE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES. ITS ONLY DESIGNED TO STOP BY MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ABOUT 50 THOUSAND MILES. ITS AS IF THE LEADERSHIP AT GM FORGOT ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING THE UNIT STOP. SOMEONE WAS PROBABLY REWARDED FOR SAVING THE COST IN THE CHANGE OF MATERIAL OF THE BRAKE LINES. THE SAVINGS DRIVEN BY COST REDUCTION IN THE MATERIALS ORGANIZATION IS IN THIS CASE VERY BAD FOR BUSINESS. AFTER ALL IF A PRODUCT ENDS UP REDUCING THE NUMBERS OF CUSTOMERS THROUGH ACCIDENTS IT HAS TO IMPACT YOUR SALES. THESE PEOPLE MARKET THEIR PRODUCT AS ONE LONGEST RUNNING VEHICLES IN THE MARKET PLACE. CURRENT CONDITIONS ALSO HAS THEM THE LONGEST STOPPING VEHICLES IN CLASS. *TR
UNWANTED ABS APPLICATION AT SLOW SPEEDS! SOMETIMES IT ACTIVATES, OTHER TIMES IT DOESNT. VERY UNPREDICTABLE & UNSAFE! THIS IS A REOCCURRING PROBLEM.
I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND A BRAKE LINE BLEW. LUCKY IT HAPPENED IN THE DRIVEWAY AND NOT COMING DOWN A HILL. I HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SAID ALL THE LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO RUST. THE COST TO REPLACE THE LINES IS AROUND $950. *JS
I BOUGHT A 2004 CHEVY SILVERADO FROM MEDVED AND I FEEL IT HAS A PROBLEM AND GM SAYS IT'S WORKING AS DESIGNED. MY PROBLEM IS THE MESSAGE MODULE LED'S ARE SO DIM THEY CAN'T BE READ IN THE DAYLIGHT AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES BY MEDVED TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THE P N R D D3 D2 LED"S ARE JUST FINE. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIX IT. WHEN I LEFT OUR GARAGE I NOTICED THAT THE RED BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT WAS ON. USUALLY MY HUSBAND DRIVES THIS TO WORK BUT WE SWITCHED VEHICLES BECAUSE I NEEDED TO HAUL A TRAILER TO HELP MOVE MY DAUGHTER. I HAVE ONLY DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ONE OTHER TIME SO I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH HOW IT HANDLED. I NOTICED THAT I HAD TO PRESS HARD TO STOP BUT THOUGHT THAT WAS HOW IT HANDLED. I DROVE OVER 120 MILES WITH IT THIS WAY, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT, BY THE TIME I PULLED INTO OUR DRIVE, I COULD BARELY STOP THE VEHICLE. MY HUSBAND CAME OUT TO RELEASE THE TRAILER OUT BACK. HE GOT IN AND SAID, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE BRAKES?" I SAID, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN?" HE TOLD ME I HAD NO BRAKES AND I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. IT WAS A NEAR MISS INCIDENT BUT I HAVE FOUND (AS A FORMER SAFETY MANAGER) THAT THOSE NEAR MISS INCIDENTS OFTEN SHOW A ROOT CAUSE) THAT IN THE FUTURE MEANS SOMETHING. I DROVE TO DENTAL OFFICE, PARKED MY TRUCK, ATTENDED APPOINTMENT. I RETURNED TO MY TRUCK, DROVE APPROX. 1-2 MILES BEFORE COMING TO AN INTERSECTION WHERE MY LANE WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ON THIS TWO LANE ROAD. 3 VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME WERE STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. I ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN WHEN MY BRAKES FAILED WITH NO WARNING. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND WAS BARELY SLOWING DOWN. I SWERVED LEFT AND HAD TO CROSS DOUBLE YELLOW LINES INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO AVOID CRASHING INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, WHICH WOULD HAVE COLLIDED WITH THE TWO OTHER CARS AT THE LIGHT. ONCE THAT ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED, SOMEONE TURNED FROM A SIDE STREET HEADED DIRECTLY AT MY VEH. I MANAGED TO SLOW, CUT BACK INTO MY PROPER LANE AND NARROWLY AVOID HITTING THE STOPPED CARS AT THE LIGHT ONCE AGAIN. I REGAINED VERY LITTLE STOPPING ABILITY.ONCE STOPPED, MY BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. BRAKE LINE BROKE IN REAR LEFT DRIVERS SIDE. BRAKE LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED. *TR

STOPPED TO GET GAS. TRUCK WAS IDLING WENT TO SHUT IGNITION SWITCH OFF. KEY COMES OUT WITHOUT LOCKING STEERING. WENT TO START TRUCK AND WHEN RUNNING COULD PULL KEY OUT OF IGNITION AND STILL RUNNING. THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE ON MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS FAULTY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 75MPH WHEN I NOTICE IT WAS PEGGED OUT. I IMMEDIATELY PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN MY TRUCK OFF THINKING SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH MY OIL PRESSURE WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS THE GAUGE THAT WAS FAULTY. BRAKES COMPLETELY FAILED WHILE ON FREEWAY TRAFFIC BACKUP. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROX. 55-60 MPH THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME HIT THEIR BRAKES AND I DID THE SAME BUT I IMMEDIATELY FELT THE BRAKE PEDAL GO DOWN TO THE FLOORBOARD - THE WARNING BELL AND RED LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH SO I KNEW SOMETHING WITH THE BRAKES HAD FAILED. I TRIED TO GET TO ANOTHER LANE BUT TRAFFIC WAS TOO HEAVY. I PUSHED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND WAS ABLE TO STEER THE TRUCK BETWEEN THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME TO AVOID HITTING ANYONE BEFORE THE TRUCK FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. INSPECTED THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK AND ALL BRAKE LINES GOING INTO THE ABS CONTROL UNIT WERE VERY BADLY CORRODED WITH AT LEAST ONE LEAKING FLUID. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, CORROSION IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER WAS EVIDENT IN ALL THE BRAKE LINES THAT WERE VISIBLE IN THE TRUCK CHASSIS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A MATERIAL DEFECT. *TR

BRAKES FAILED WHEN STOPPING FOR STOPLIGHT. MECHANIC SAID BRAKE LINE TO REAR BRAKES RUSTED AND FAILED. ALSO SAID ALL BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED AND CORRODED. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING ON A TWO-LINE ROAD NEARING THE CITY AND NEAR THE TOP OF A HILL WHEN A LINE OF CARS SLOWED QUICKLY IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD TO GET ONTO THE BRAKES QUICKLY TO MAINTAIN A SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE, BUT WHEN I DID THE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. HAVING VERY LITTLE TIME TO REACT, I NOTICED THE TRAFFIC IN THE ONCOMING LANE HAD STOPPED OR SLOWED GREATLY ABOUT 100 YARDS IN FRONT OF ME, SO I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE INTO THE LEFT LANE TO AVOID REAR ENDING AN ENTIRE LINE OF CARS WITH MY 6000LBS TRUCK. FORTUNATELY THE DRIVER AT THE FRONT OF THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC SAW ME AND STOPPED. I WAS THEN ABLE TO BARELY MANAGE MY WAY BACK INTO THE RIGHT LANE AS SOME OF THOSE CARS STARTED MOVING AGAIN. AT THIS POINT I WAS JUST CRESTING A LARGE HILL AT APPROXIMATELY 40MPH. A POLICE OFFICER IN THE ONCOMING LANE HAD ALREADY SEEN ME AND ACTIVATED HIS LIGHTS AND THEN STARTED WORKING TO TURN AROUND IN THE ROAD TO CHASE ME. WHEN I WAS BACK IN THE RIGHT LANE I FINALLY HAD A SECOND TO TRY TO LOCATE THE PARKING BRAKE, BUT ACTIVATING IT HAD ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT. I COASTED NEARLY 1/2 MILE DOWN THE ROAD AND FORCED THE TRUCK INTO A PARKING LOT, OVER A LARGE SET OF RAILROAD TIES AND INTO A YARD WITH AN UPSLOPED HILL. IF I COULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN IT STOPPED THERE I COULD HAVE COASTED DOWN AN EVEN STEEPER HILL AND INTO A VERY BUSY MULTI-LANE INTERSECTION AND KILLED SOMEONE. THE POLICE OFFICER ENDED UP BEING UNDERSTANDING OF MY SITUATION AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK FOR ME AND I HAD IT TOWED TO A SHOP. THE SHOP SAID THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED OUT COMPLETELY AND BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR SETS OF LINES WERE LEAKING. I DID NOT HAVE ANY DASH LIGHT INDICATING THAT THE FLUID WAS SLOW EITHER BEFORE OR AFTER THE INCIDENT. THE SHOP OWNER ALSO TOLD ME THAT THESE TRUCKS DO NOT HAVE A PROPORTIONING VALVE IN ORDER TO ALLOW ONE OF THE FRONT OR REAR BRAKES TO CONTINUE WORKING IN THE EVENT OF A FAILURE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 CHEVROLET Z71 CREWCAB SILVERADO THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO WARNING SIGN SUCH AS SOFT PEDAL OR WARNING LIGHT. I AVOIDED REAR ENDING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME BECAUSE I WAS GOING SLOW ENOUGH IN TRAFFIC TO USE MY EMERGENCY BRAKE. UPON INSPECTION IF FOUND THE BRAKE RESERVOIR BELOW MINIMUM AND NO VISIBLE LEAKS IN MY GARAGE SO I FILLED WITH DOT3 FLUID PER OWNERS MANUAL. UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEKING A FIRM PEDAL THE REAR HARD BRAKE LINE BURST. FURTHER EXAMINATION REVEALED ALL BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED AND IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT, NOT JUST THE BURST LINE. MY TRUCK IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER AND SELDOM DRIVEN ON SALTED OR CHEMICAL TREATED ROADS. WHEN IT IS I ALWAYS TAKE IS TO MY LOCAL CAR WASH THAT HAS AN UNDERCARRIAGE WASH. I HAVE NOTICED MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON BRAKE LINES FOR THIS VEHICLE WITH NO RECALL. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER HEARD OF BRAKE LINES RUSTING TO FAILURE ON A VEHICLE THAT IS UNDER 20 YEARS OLD. WHEN I DID THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND JUST BARELY MISSED HITTING HIM BY SWERVING TO THE RIGHT. I AM A MECHANIC OF 29 YEARS AND KNEW THE BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED DUE TO A MAJOR LEAK. I BOUGHT A PIECE OF BRAKE LINE AND WAS GOING TO REPAIR IT THE NEXT DAY AND WHEN I GOT THE TRUCK ON THE LIFT I SEEN MASSIVE AMOUNT OF RUST ON ALL THE LINES AND THAT IT HAD MULTIPLE LEAKS FROM THE PANIC STOP. I HAVEN'T SEEN LINES RUSTED LIKE THIS ON CARS THAT HAVE 3 TIMES THE MILEAGE THAT MY TRUCK HAS. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT IS A KNOWN CONCERN. ALL BRAKE BLEEDERS ARE RUSTED BEYOND BEING ABLE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM, BACKING PLATES RUSTED AWAY. OF ALL RECALLS OUT THERE AND THIS ISN'T ONE IS OUTRAGEOUS. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED SOONER THAN LATER. I HAVE BEEN A STATE INSPECTION MECHANIC ALL MY LIFE AND THIS IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN ESPECIALLY ON A TRUCK WITH 60,000 MILES ON IT! THERE ARE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE?? PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT STAKE AND NO RECALL BUT WE WILL RECALL CARS IF A SENSOR MIGHT BE CAUSING A CAR TO POLLUTE THE AIR. THIS IS A $1,000- $1,500 MIN. REPAIR FOR THE CONSUMER. PLUS THE FUEL LINES ARE RUSTING THE SAME WAY. TRUCK WAS IN DON MEALEY CHEVROLET CLEMONT FL. 34711 FOR A FUEL LEAK. UPON COMPLETION OF WORK TECHNICIAN TOOK TRUCK OUT FOR TEST DRIVE. DURING THE RIDE HE EXPERIENCED BRAKE FAILURE AND ALMOST STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS WAS REPORTED TO ME BY THE SERVICE WRITER [XXX] . THE RESULTS WERE REBUILD BRAKE LINES. 4000 FOUND REAR BRAKE LINE FROM ABS UNIT TO REAR WHEELS LEAKING REPLACE BRAKE LINE AND BLEED BRAKES PARTS $89.71 LABOR $698.21 TOTAL $787.92 PLUS $75.00 HAZ. THE VEHICLE HAD SAT OVERNIGHT AND I STARTED IT TO DRIVE IT TO WORK THE NEXT MORNING. AS I WAS SHIFTING FROM PARK TO REVERSE, THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMED TO GO DOWN FARTHER THAN USUAL BUT ALLOWED ME TO SHIFT AS EXPECTED. AS I STARTED MOVING BACKWARDS, AFTER TRYING TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND WERE NOT WORKING. THE SERVICE LIGHTS APPEARED AND I BELIEVE THE CHIME SOUNDED. I DID NOT HAVE ANY BRAKING ABILITY SO I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. IT WAS DISCOVERED ONE OF THE METAL LINES ON THE REAR HAD RUPTURED/FAILED DUE TO CORROSION AND ALL OF THE FLUID HAD LEAKED OUT. I FEEL EXTREMELY LUCKY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN IN BUSY TRAFFIC OR APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION WITH STOPPED VEHICLES AND TAVELING AT A MUCH HIGHER SPEED BECAUSE I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP OR REACT QUICK ENOUGH TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND EVEN IF I HAD ATTEMPTED IT, I DOUBT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN TIME. *TR

THE BRAKES FAILED IN MY DRIVEWAY DUE TO RUSTED STEEL BRAKE LINES. IT COST ME $914. TO FIX. THIS IS PROBABLY A DEFECT IN DESIGN BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURER FAILED TO USE A PLASTIC COVER OVER THE BRAKE LINES. ALSO, THE ABS SENSORS IN THE FRONT WHEELS ALSO FAILED, LEADING TO PERIODIC ENGAGEMENT OF THE ABS SYSTEM AT SLOW SPEEDS, SUCH AS APPROACHING INTERSECTIONS OR AT STOP LIGHTS. EVERYTIME I DRIVE ON THE INTERSTATE MY SPEEDOMETER READS THE WRONG SPEED, OR QUITS WORKING ENTIRELY. THE TACHOMETER DOES NOT EVEN WORK AT ALL. SPEEDOMETER READS WRONG IN WINTER TIME, FREEZES AFTER I HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD. USUALLY REQUIRING ME TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE TO RESET IT. *TR
