While driving the right front factory steel wheel rusted out to the point where the wheel center separated from the outer part of the rim on 4 of the 5 spokes, this caused a dangerous wobble to occur and if the vehicle wasn't being driven in the city I believe this would have resulted in a crash since the wheel was only being held on by 1 of the 5 spokes. Due to the design of these chrome clad wheels you can't see the corrosion that is occuring behind the chrome cladding. I put a spare tire on the vehicle and have since parked it until such time as I can replace all 4 of the wheels since I don't believe this vehicle is safe to be driven at this time. The chrome cladding was thrown off the right front wheel when this occured
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 800. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THERE WAS A WOBBLE AND AN ABNORMAL SOUND COMING FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WHEEL HUB DETACHED FROM THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE RESIDENCE AND REPLACED THE WHEEL HUB AS NEEDED. THE CONTACT PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE WITH THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL HUB AND REPLACED THE WHEEL HUB AS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO VALLEY CHEVROLET, 180 FLETCHER AVE, SPENCER, IN 47460, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 243,000. *DT*JB*DT CONSUMER STATED RETAINER RING FELL OUT AND STARTED TO MAKE GRINDING NOISE. AFTER THAT THE FRONT END DROPPED AND THE TIRE FELL OFF AS WELL AS BREAKING THE BRAKE LINE HOSE, STABLIZER BAR AND CALIPER BRACKET.*JB
I HAVE CHANGED ALL 4 NEW TIRES IN 4 DIFFERENT TIMES EVERY YRS NOT SURE IF THAT A WHEEL PROBLEM. AND ALSO FIX MY FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM THAT WAS GIVE ME A PROBLEM IN THE PAST. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO HAVE ALL THE TIRES REPLACED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TIRES WERE DEFECTIVE AND COULD NOT BE BALANCED CORRECTLY. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
FEDERAL COURAGA MT TIRE TREAD SEPARATION AT FREEWAY SPEEDS WITHOUT WARNING. NOT EVEN AT HALF OF THE TREAD LIFE NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE OR CRACKING PRIOR TO THIS. ALL OTHER TIRES LOOK OK BUT HAVE BEEN REPLACED FOR CONCERNS OVER THE SAFETY OF THE TIRES AND MANUFACTURING QUALITY
DRIVING SOUTH ON INTERSTATE 15 IN #1 LANE SOUTH OF CEDAR CITY, UTAH. THE TRUCK SUDDENLY SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND WITHIN SECONDS THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION WITH DEBRIS FLY A HEAD OF ME. I FOUGHT TO CONTROL MY VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN TO PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD WITH HITTING ANY ONE. THE TIRE THAT EXPLODED WAS ON LEFT FRONT. THE ENTIRE TREAD CAME OFF OF THE TIRE AND TIRE SEPARATED WHERE THE TIRE WAS SEAMED TOGETHER DURING MANUFACTURE. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE BENT FRONT BUMPER, TORE THE WHEEL WELL LINER, DENTED THE FRONT DOOR IN SEVERAL PLACES AND DENTED ROCKER PANEL UNDER THE FRONT DOOR. THE TIRE WAS A BF GOODRICH ALL TERRAIN T/A KO, LT285R70/17 LOAD RANGE E. THE TIRE HAD A 50,000 MILE WARRANTY BUT HAD JUST A LITTLE 20,000 MILES WITH 10/32 TREAD ON ALL TIRES WHICH MEANS THERE WAS 60% TREAD LIFE LEFT IN THE TIRES. WHEN I WAS ALMOST HOME, I NOTICE A TYPE OF VIBRATION LIKE A TIRE WAS UNBALANCE OR OUT OF ROUND. I CHECK THE OTHER THREE TIRES AND DISCOVERED THE RIGHT REAR TIRE HAD LARGE BULGE ACROSS THE TREAD WHICH INDICATES THAT ANOTHER TIRE WAS FAILING. TOOK THE TIRES TO THE DEALER AND TOLD ME THAT ME THESE FAILURES WERE DO TO A MANUFACTURER/WORKMANSHIP DEFECT. MICHELIN WHICH MAKES THE BF GOODRICH TIRES WANTS ME TO PAY FOR A NEW SET OF TIRES AND DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK AND VERBALLY THEY TELL ME THEY MAY REIMBURSE ME BUT WILL NOT PUT THAT IN WRITING. I DO NOT TRUST THEM AND WILL NEVER BUY BF GOODRICH OR MICHELIN TIRES AGAIN. MICHELIN HAS A RECALL ON THIS LINE OF TIRES IN VARIOUS SIZES BUT NOT IN MY SIZE. DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY MY SIZE WAS NOT RECALLED BECAUSE ALL SIZES IN THE ALL TERRAIN LINE ARE MADE WITH THE SAME MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING PROCESS THE SAME FOR ALL SIZES. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE SIZE OF THE TIRE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TIRES FAILED TO PASS AN INSPECTION BECAUSE THE TREAD WAS TOO THIN. THE TIRES WERE NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP IN GAYLORD, MICHIGAN INSTALLED DUNLOP AT20 GRANDTREK P245/75R16 TIRES ON MY HD 2500 SILVERADO PICKUP TRUCK. THIS TRUCK IS A 3/4 TON PICKUP. THESE TIRES WERE PASSENGER TIRES RATED AT 4 PLY AND NEVER DESIGNED TO BE INSTALLED ON A 3/4 TON PICKUP TRUCK. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS UNTIL JUNE 2014 WHEN I LEARNED THIS FROM THE GOODYEAR TIRE CORP. AFTER THEY SENT ME TO HAVE THEIR TIRES INSPECTED. MY TRUCK REQUIRES LT TIRES AND AT LEAST 10 PLY. CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP IN GAYLORD MADE MY TRUCK UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. ONE TIRE EVENTUALLY BLEW OUT ON THE EXPRESSWAY, FORTUNATELY A MOTORIST I WAS PASSING PULLED UP ALONG SIDE US AND SIGNALED THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM UP FRONT AT THE PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL AREA! QUESTION IS, WHY WOULD A CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP NOT KNOW WHAT TIRES TO INSTALL ON THEIR OWN CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICKUP TRUCKS? I ASKED THEM TO PUT ON THE CORRECT TIRES ( 10 PLY - LT TIRES) ACCORDING TO THE PLACARD LOCATED ON MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR AT NO CHARGE BUT THEY REFUSED NOW WHAT ACTION IS TO BE TAKEN AGAINST A DEALERSHIP WHO WOULD DO THIS? I HAD LT TIRES ON THE TRUCK BACK IN JUNE OF 2010 WHEN I PULLED INTO THIS CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO HAVE ONE TIRE REPAIRED BECAUSE OF A SLOW LEAK. I HAD 75K MILES ON THE TRUCK THEN AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THEY GAVE ME FREE ROTATIONS EVERY 6 - 8K MILES WITHOUT EVER TELLING ME THEY HAD INSTALLED INCORRECT TIRES ON MY TRUCK! THIS IS A NIGHTMARE! I WAS DRIVING ON I-16 RUNNING ABOUT 65 MPH ALL OF A SUDDEN L HEAR SOMETHING LIKE A CANNON GOING OFF. MY TRUCK STARTED WEAVING IT TOOK ALL I HAD TO STAY IN CONTROL. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD LOOKING IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR SEEING A BIG TRANSFER TRUCK COMING MY WAY TRYING TO DODGE THE HUGE PIECE OF TIRE THAT CAME OFF MY TRUCK. I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO GET OUT BECAUSE OF THE TRAFFIC. THE BACK LEFT SIDE OF MY TRUCK WAS ALL CRUNCHED IN WHERE THE TIRE HAD BEATEN IT TO DEATH THANK THE GOOD LORD I WAS AHEAD OF THE TRAFFIC SO THEY HAD TIME TO SLOW DOWN. BOUGHT A SET OF FEDERAL COURAGIA MT'S ABOUT FIVE MONTHS AGO STILL ABOUT 95% TREAD WHEN TWO OF THE TIRES SPLIT GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. I ALSO TOOK THE TIRES BACK TO THE COMPANY I PURCHASED THEM FROM ANS THEY HAVE HAD A FEW SETS BROUGHT BACK IN THE PAST MONTH. FEDERAL SO FAR HAS REFUSED TO CREDIT ANYONE FOR THE ISSUE. WE HAD A FLAT ON OUR 2004 SILVERADO TRUCK AND WE WERE UNABLE TO DETACH THE SPARE TIRE TO REPLACE THE FLAT TIRE ON THE TRUCK. IT IS WAY TOO COMPLICATED TO REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE AND FORTUNATELY FOR US IT HAPPENED WHILE WE WERE AT WORK IN THE MIDDLE OF A SNOW STORM SO WE WERE ABLE TO PULL IT INTO OUR HEATED GARAGE TO ATTEMPT THE REPAIR. WE LET IT WARM UP OVERNIGHT AND ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE THE NEXT DAY. EVEN IN A 70 DEGREE HEATED GARAGE IN DRY CONDITIONS WE COULD NOT REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. I THINK THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE IF THIS HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSTATE OR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RURAL COUNTRYSIDE IN WINTER OR RAINY WEATHER IF SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. THE PARTS RUST FROM EXPOSURE AND THE MECHANISM TO RELEASE THE TIRE FAILS TO WORK. FROM TALKING TO TWO TIRE DEALERS EACH SAID THAT THEY HAD TO CUT THE WIRES HOLDING THE TIRE IN PLACE WITH A BLOW TORCH TO EVEN REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. I ALSO BELIEVE THERE IS A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY THAT YOU HAVE A SPARE TIRE ON THIS VEHICLE IF THERE IS A FLAT TIRE. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR YEARS EACH TIRE DEALER SAID AND CHEVROLET HAS NEVER ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE. I JUST IMAGINE A 16-18 YEAR OLD YOUNG MAN WHO IS STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD STRUGGLING TO FIX THIS ISSUE BEING SERIOUSLY INJURED FIGHTING TO REMOVE THE SPARE TIRE. KUMHO TYRES ON MY CHEVY SILVERADO DEVELOPED SIDEWALL SPLITS DUE TO DRY ROT. TYRES ARE ONLY 1 YEAR OLD AND HAVE 26,000 MILES ON THEM. THEY DID NOT WANT THE DOT NUMBERS. CONTACTED KUMHO AND THEY SAID THEY WEREN'T CONCERNED. MY AUTO SHOP SAID THE TYRES WERE UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND REPLACED THEM. THE INDIFFERENCE AND RUDENESS OF THE KUMHO CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSON CHARLES AND HIS SUPERVISOR WAS APPALLING. ABSOLUTELY NO CONCERN THAT THIS COULD CREATE A POTENTIALLY FATAL TYRE FAILURE. COMPLETE SUDDEN TIRE FAILURE SIGMA TIRE STAMPEDE RADIAL AS LT265R75/16, DOT UPW8 TWT 3206 CP G04L THE TIRE HAD ABOUT 28000 MILES ON IT WHILE MOUNTED ON MY CHEVROLET 2500 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE CREW CAB TRUCK RIGHT FRONT WHEEL, AND HAD 1/3 TO 1/2 OF THE ORIGINAL TREAD REMAINING. I WAS ON I-26 IN SOUTH CAROLINA TRAVELING AT ABOUT 70 MPH. I FELT A VERY SLIGHT VIBRATION, JUST SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL ROAD VIBRATION AND ABOUT 15 SECONDS LATER, THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLED. THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE BODY BETWEEN THE TWO STEEL BELTS. FORTUNATELY I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE IN LIGHT TRAFFIC, AND WAS ABLE TO BRING THE TRUCK UNDER CONTROL WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING, OR ROLLING OVER. THE TIRE WAS INFLATED TO MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS, AND I HAD HIT NOTHING THAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED THE TREAD SEPARATION. I HAD STOPPED FOR FUEL ABOUT 20 MINUTES EARLIER, AND THE TIRES LOOKED NORMAL AT THAT TIME. I WAS NOT HAULING A LOAD, OR PULLING A TRAILER AT THE TIME. IN ROUGHLY A MILLION MILES OR DRIVING I HAVE NEVER HAD A TIRE FAIL LIKE THIS, AND DON'T EVER WANT ANOTHER FAILURE LIKE IT. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD SOME SORT OF WARNING OF AN INCIPIENT FAILURE.
