VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ON DIRT ROAD 30%. CABLE FRAYS AND BREAKS NEAR GROMMET, ORIGINALLY AT 55,000 MILES AND AGAIN AT 75,000. TIRE SIZE WAS 245-75-R16.*AK

WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH DRIVER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR END OF VEHICLE. RIGHT AFTERWARDS THE LEFT REAR WHEEL CAME OFF DUE TO LUGS:NUTS: BOLTS SHEARING OFF. THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED BY DEALERSHIP. ON APRIL 24TH, WHILE DRIVING RIGHT REAR WHEEL CAME OFF, SENDING VEHICLE INTO A GUARDRAIL AND DITCH. THE LUGS: NUTS AND BOLTS SHEARED OFF. *AK THERE WAS A RECALL, 98V095, HOWEVER CONSUMER'S FAILURES HAPPENED PRIOR TO THIS RECALL, ON THE SECOND INCIDENT THERE WERE 2 INJURED PEOPLE, DEALER PAID FOR THE FIRST INCIDENT'S REPAIRS. *SLC
WHILE DRIVING 65MPH DASHBOARD CAUGHT ON FIRE DUE TO A DEFECTIVE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. *AK
BOTH DOOR REARVIEW MIRRORS HAD TO BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO BACKING PEELING OFF, MAKING MIRRORS USELESS. AT THIS TIME, BACKING WAS PEELING AGAIN. CONSUMER FELT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAVE THESE MIRRORS REPLACED EVERY 2 YEARS.*AK *SLC
BRAKES HAVE FAILED REPEATEDLY BUT INTERMITTENTLY SINCE 3/97, MULTIPLE DEALERS UNABLE TO LOCATE PROBLEM. PARTS REPLACED, BUT BRAKES CONTINUE TO FAIL. BRAKES GO HARD, TAKES A LONG TIME TO STOP, VEHICLE SHUDDERS DURING BRAKING. *AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH ON. THEN THERE WAS SLIGHT VIBRATION. CONSUMER LOOKED TO THE LEFT SIDE OF HIM, AND NOTICED THAT LEFT SIDE TIRE CAME OFF DUE TO LUGS: NUTS AND BOLTS SHEARING OFF. *AK
WHILE TRYING TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT CONSUMER HIT A DITCH, AND AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY WHILE TRAVELING 50 MPH. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. *AK.ET.
VEHICLE HAS NO BRAKES AT LOW SPEEDS DURING FAILURE. IT CAN BE INTERMITTENT. THE SYSTEM THINKS THE WHEELS ARE LOCKED AND WILL NOT ALLOW BRAKES TO APPLY. I USED TO WORK FOR FORD. THIS IS KNOWN WITHIN THE COMPANY, BUT IS KEPT VERY QUIET. DEALERS MUST CALL AND SPEAK TO SOMEONE TO GET HELP. THE PROBLEM IS NOT DOCUMENTED WITH TSB'S OR OTHER SERVICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS.*AK
IN TWO WEEKS TIME, I HAVE HAD MY ENGINE COMPLETELY FAIL WHILE EXITING
WHILE EXITING A BUSY FREEWAY STEERING LOCKED UP, CAUSING VEHICLE TO LOSE CONTROL. ALSO ABS BRAKES FAILED, AND ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON/OFF. *AK
THE SUNROOF LEAK HAS CAUSED WATER TO ENTER ABOVE THE HEADLINER AND SHORT OUT THE OVERHEAD CONSOLE/INTERIOR LIGHTS
WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS ATTACHED TO TRAILER THE REAR WHEEL WOULD VIBRATE AND SHAKE. DEALER/MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THEY ARE AWARE AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL THEY FOUND THE PROBLEM. MEANTIME, CONSUMER IS UNABLE TO USE VEHICLE FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH HE IS PAYING FOR. CAN NHTSA HELP IN THIS MATTER. *AK

UNEXPECTEDLY LOST DRIVE TRAN WHILE TRAVELING ON US ROUTE 1 HIGHWAY, GOING 35 MPH, IN BAD WHETHER CONDITIONS.
THE CONSUMER HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH LUGS: NUTS. LUGS: NUTS WERE LOOSE. THIS HAPPENED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS WORKED ON FOR RECALL REPAIRS. RECALL98V096000. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 45 TO 50 MPH SPARE TIRE UNDER TRUCK FELL OFF/ SHIFT CABLE BRACKET BREAKING WHILE CONSUMER WAS PULLING INTO A DRIVEWAY. *AK *ML
CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT DISENGAGE. MJS
THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE BRAKE & ACCELERATOR IS UNSAFE. WHEN THE BRAKE IS ENGAGED, IT IS BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE ACCELERATOR. IN AN EMEREGENCY STOP, IT IS POSSIBLE TO FULLY ENGAGE THE BRAKE, AND WITH YOUR FOOT PARTIALLY OVERHANGING TO ACCIDENTLY ENGAGE THE ACCELERATOR. THIS IS A DESIGN PROBLEM WITH ALL EXPEDITIONS, AND FORD HAS BEEN UNWILLING TO CORRECT IT. *AK
ABS BRAKING SYSTEM INTERMITTENTLY ENGAGES WHILE DRIVING, RESULTING IN VEHICLE NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
WHEN SITTING AT COMPLETE STOP VEHICLE WAS IDLING, CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON, DRIVERS FOOT ON BRAKE, THE VEHICLE JUST TOOK OFF, HIT TWO CARS AND TELEPHONE POSTS. DEALER HAD REPAIRED THE CRUISE CONTROL ON THE 21-DEC-98. DEALER CONTACTED AGAIN AND ASSUMED THE CRUISE CONTROL IS RELATED IN INCIDENT. PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. VEHICLE NOT OPERABLE. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON AN INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH, THE RIGHT FRONT TORSION BAR BROKE AND FELL OUT FROM UNDER THE TRUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. THE TORSION BAR AND THE TORSION BRACKET WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALER. *AK
STEERING SECTOR BOLT SHEARED, STEERING BECAME INOPERATIVE AS PART OF SHEARED BOLT FELL INSIDE OF STEERING SECTOR. *MJS
RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE 98V095000 IN THE MAIL. CALLED DEALER, AND WAS INFORMED NO PARTS AVAILABLE. DEALER RECEIVED ONLY LIMITED SUPPLY OF PARTS. LUGS: NUTS SENT ACCORDING TO VEHICLES SOLD. *AK
SHOULDER BELT IN THE VEHICLE'S THIRD ROW OF SEATS WAS SO TIGHT THAT IT WAS CHOKING THE CHILD. THE CHILD HAD TO BE CUT OUT OFF THE SEATBELTS. DEALER HAS NOT SEEN. *AK
OIL SEAL/GREASE RETAINER--OIL LEAKED.
VEHICLE HAD TWO SETS OF FRONT TIE ROD REPLACEMENTS SINCE NOVEMBER, 1998, AND BELIEVED THAT THIS CONDITION WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT (ANTI-SWAY BAR LINK ARMS). DELAER NOTIFIED AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE 98 VEHICLE WAS CORRECTED FOR THAT SAME PROBLEM, BUT NOTHING WAS DONE FOR OWNER OF 1997 VEHICLE. CAN NHTSA PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OR HELP IN THIS MATTER. *AK
THE TAIL PIPE SEPARATED FROM THE MUFFLER & FELL OFF. DEALER REFERRED OWNER TO MUFFLER SHOP. THEY WELDED PIPE ON & IT FELL OFF SOMETIMES LATER AGAIN. *AK
WHEN DRIVING 40 MPH THE WHEEL WASN'T LEVELED, CAUSING THE CONSUMER TO RUN OFF THE ROAD. WHEN ATTEMPING TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD, THE VEHICLE FLIPPED OVER FOUR TIMES, CAUSING THE CONSUMER'S DAUGHTER TO FLY OUT THE WINDOW AND THE CONSUMER WAS HURT TO. *AK
THE GOODYEAR WRANGLERS RTS TIRES ARE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON THE FORD EXPEDITION,THEY HAVE A TENDANCY TO HYDROPLANE ON WET ROADS. EXPIERENCED MAJOR LOSS OF CONTROL IN A RAINSTORM TRAVELING AT 25MPH ON A 45MPH ROAD. ENTERED A SLIGHT CURVE, NO STEERING RESPONSE VEHICLE PROCEED TO HEAD STRAIGHT UNTIL COMMING IN CONTACT WITH A CONCRETE BICYCLE PATH,IN WHICH FORCED THE VEHICEL TO TURN ABRUBTLY, HYDROPLANING AGAIN GOING ACROSS TWO LANES UNTIL DRIVER REGAINED CONTROL. TIRES SHOW NO MAJOR WEAR, NO UNEVEN TREAD OR ANY DEFECTS. THESE STOCK GOODYEAR TIRES ALSO PRODUCE MAJOR VIBRATIONS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.FORD SHOULD NOT USE THESE TIRES AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 255-70-16 )
CHARCOAL CANNISTER ON FUEL TANK CLOGS W/ DIRT FROM GRAVEL ROAD, CAUSES ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON. I PAID TO REPLACED IT WITH A RE-DESIGNED PART & DEALER STILL REPEATEDLY HAS TO CLEAN NEW 1 OUT. HE SAYS THIS HAPPENS TO 97S & 98S. THIS IS A PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE. NOW I'M TOLD TO BUY ANOTHER NEW ONE WITH NO GUARANTEE IT WON'T CLOG. I'M DRIVING WITH IT CLOGGED. WHO KNOWS IF PRESSURE WILL BUILD IN THE TANK. COMPLAINTS TO FORD HAVE BEEN USELESS. I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY. CANNOT AVOID GRAVEL ROAD. THIS SUV IS ADVERTISED TO HANDLE THIS KIND OF DRIVING. OUR FORD PICKUP AND JEEP CHEROKEE DON'T DO THIS. I WANT FORD TO COME UP A PART THAT WORKS.*AK
REAR DOOR CHILD LOCKS ON BOTH SIDES SET THEMSELVES TO LOCK POSITION, THE DOORS CAN NOT BE OPENED FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. *SLC
THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD "NO BRAKES" ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. WHEN WE TOOK IT IN TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME ON 10-7-98, WE WERE TOLD BECAUSE THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, WE HAVE NO PROBLEM. WHEN IT WAS TAKEN IN ON 1-27-99 TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP THEY CALLED THE MANUFACTURE THIS TIME TO FIND OUT IF ANY OTHER EXPEDITIONS MIGHT OF HAD THIS SAME SORT OF PROBLEM AND WAS ADVISED "NO". THEY DECIDED BECAUSE IT HAD THE SAME BRAKE SYSTEM AS ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE TO CHANGE THE FRONT SENSORS. WHEN I WENT TO PICK THE VEHICLE UP FROM THEM, I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT I SHOULD DRIVE WITH THE ANTICIPATION THAT THE BRAKES COULD GO OUT AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THEY WERE NOT SURE THAT THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM. WELL LOW AND BEHOLD THE BRAKES WENT OUT AGAIN, THIS TIME A SOLO ACCIDENT WITH THIS VEHICLE WITH "NO BRAKES". WE WERE VERY LUCKY NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED AS SOMEONE WOULD DEFINITELY HAVE GOTTEN KILLED. THIS VEHICLE DEFINITELY POSES A HIGH SAFETY RISK TO THE ROADS AND HIGHWAYS IT IS DRIVEN ON.*AK
THREADS ON THE TIE ROD END THAT SCREW INTO THE ADJUSTING SLEEVE FAILED, THE THREADS WERE COMPLETELY WORN OUT.
CONSUMER VEERED RIGHT TO AVOID ANIMAL AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT STEER RACK DUE TO THE POWER STEERING GEAR SHAFT ASSEMBLY (SHEARED IN TWO) FAILURE CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND COLLISION WITH PARKED VEHICLES. *MJS
MADE LEFT TURN FROM STOP. AS WEEL WAS CORRECTING ITSELF, VEHICLE BEGAN SHAKING AND STEERING CONTROL WAS LOST. VEHICLE PULLED TO RIGHT THEN HIT AND JUMPED 9" CURB. STEERING ARM DOWN TO RIGHT FRONT TIRE IS BROKEN. STEERING MALFUNCTIONED BEFORE STRIKING CURB, BUT DAMAGE IS BEING BLAMED ON FACT THAT VEHICLE STRUCK CURB. BOTH TIRES HIT CURB AT VERY LOW SPEED.
WHILE PARKED FOR SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THE VEHICLE EXPLODED AND CAUSED A FIRE WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER CANNOT DETERMINE PROBLEM . *AK
CONSUMER PARKED VEHICLE AND WENT INSIDE THE HOUSE, AND VEHICLE EXPLODED, CATCHING ON FIRE. FIRE DEPARTMENT EXPLAINED TO CONSUMER THAT FIRE STARTED IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. *AK
VEHICLE WAS LEANING ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE. TOOK TO DEALER WHILE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH SUSPENSION. TWO MONTHS LATER, OUT OF WARRANTY, PUT VEHICLE ON DIANOSTIC MACHINE AND THEY SAID IT WAS A PROBLEM. THEY COULD HAVE PUT IT ON THE MACHINE THE FIRST TIME WHEN CONSUMER FIRST PURCHASED VEHICLE. *AK
COMPANY VEHICLE. IE98026; WHILE DRIVING ONE WHEEL POINTED TO RIGHT AND ONE TO LEFT. WHEN ATTEMPTING TO TURN VEHICLE. TIE ROD END BECAME SEPARATED FROM LINK PIECE. DEALER CONTACTED, AND STATED NO WARRANTY ON VEHICLE. REPAIRWORK DONE AT OWNERS EXPENSE. PROVIDED FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, RESULTING IN A EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE, CAUSING A VEHICLE CRASH. THE DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, THE TRANSMISSION WILL GO INTO NEUTRAL AND STAY THERE. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON THREE OCCASIONS, LATE JULY AND AUGUST. FORD HAS NO SOLUTION TO PROBLEM. FORD TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE IT UNTIL IT BREAKS DOWN. *AK
CONSUMER COMPLAINED SINCE HE PURCHASED VEHICLE IT HAS A STRONG VIBRATION IN THE STEERING SYSTEM. *AK
THE CONSUMER HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. WHEN APPLYING BRAKES, THE VEHICLE WOULD SLOW DOWN TO A CERTAIN POINT, AND THEN THE PEDAL WOULD GO TO THE FLOORBOARD, CAUSING TO VEHICLE TO KEEP ROLLING. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK
CONSUMER EXPERIENCEED PROBLEM WITH DEALER HONORING RECALL # 98S14 CONCERNING CHECKING VEHICLE FOR LOOSE LUGS: NUTS. DEALER INFORMED CONSUMER THAT NO RECALL 98S14 WAS FOUND. *AK

4-WHEEL DRIVE HUBS/ AXLE FAILURE. *YC
THE BOLTS THAT ATTACH THE FACTORY INSTALLED HITCHED WORKED LOOSE WITH 2 OF THE 6 BOLTS FALLING OUT AND THE REMAINING 4 BOLTS WERE VERY LOOSE. THE HITCH WAS CLOSE TO SEPARATING FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS ALSO HAPPENED TO MY NEW 1999 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR THIS WEEK WHERE 4 OF THE 6 BOLTS WERE LOST AND THE OTHER 2 WERE VERY LOOSE. FORTUNATELY, I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WHEN PARKED AND THE HITCH DID NOT SEPARATE ONTHE HIGHWAY.
THE ABS SENSORS WERE REPLACED WITH DIFFERENT SENSORS DUE TO CANCELLING OUT OF ABS SYSTEM. ENGINEERS INFORMED MECHANIC SENSORS NOT BEING MOUNTED IN HOUSING CORRECTLY. BEEN TO DEALER 6 TIMES FOR THIS ABS SYSTEM PROBLEM. HAVE NO BRAKES WHEN APPLIED. *AK
