MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW OUT A SPARKPLUG FROM THE HEAD WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. REPAIR COSTS EXCEEDED $4000. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM I FOUND NOT ONLY WERE THERE OTHER EXPEDITIONS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, IT SEEMS THAT I PAID APROX. TWICE AS MUCH AS OTHER SIMIALAR REPAIR JOBS.*AK
FRONT WINDSHIELD/WIPER FLUID DISPENSER: CROSS-COUNTRY ROAD TRIP - FAILURE TO DISPENSE WIPER FLUID. SPORADIC DISPENSING OF WIPER FLUID ON ROAD TRIP AND CONTINUES TO THIS DAY. PUSHING BUTTON HARD & AT DIFFERENT ANGLES SOMETIMES WORKS. *JB
ON JUNE 21, 2003, I TRAVELED TO A GROCERY STORE JUST OUTSIDE MY SUBDIVISION. I WAS IN THE STORE ABOUT TEN MINUTES WHEN THE STORE MANAGER STARTED TO PAGE THE OWNER OF A BLUE EXPEDITION. AT THE TIME I THOUGHT I HAD LEFT MY LIGHTS ON. UNFORTUNATELY, I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE IN THE STORE'S PARKING LOT. WHEN I ARRIVED OUTSIDE, THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE EXPEDITION WAS IN FLAMES. THE FIRE WAS SO INTENSE IT BURNED THROUGH THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. BY THE TIME I MADE IT OUTSIDE, FIREFIGHTERS WERE ALREADY BATTLING THE BLAZE. MY VEHICLE WAS A TOTAL LOSS. *JB
1998 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW SPARK PLUG OUT OF THE HEAD WITH JUST A LITTLE OVER 85,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM THAT THE FACTORY RECOMMENDS TO REPLACE THE HEAD AT $2300.00. AND THEY SAID THIS WAS THE ONLY FIX. I TRADED THE VEHICLE IN FOR A HUGE LOSS. I ONLY HAD IT FOR LESS THAN A YEAR. BECAUSE I FOUND THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH FORDS AND NO-ONE WILL DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE VOWED NEVER TO BY ANOTHER FORD AND WILL MAKE AS MANY PEOPLE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AS POSSIBLE. I NOW OWN AN ESCALADE AND HAVE PUT ON OVER 90,000 MILES WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS, NOT LIKE THE FORDS EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. THIS HAPPENED TO ME A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO AND I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A PLACE TO ENTER MY GRIPE BESIDES THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, AND THIS WAS LIKE TALKING TO A WALL. MY FAMILY HAD BOUGHT FORDS SINCE THE 40'S, WHEN MY GRANDFATHER OWNED DEALERSHIPS. HE WOULD TURN OVER IN HIS GRAVE TO FIND OUT THAT FORD IS TURNING IT'S BACK ON SO MANY LONGTIME FAITHFUL CUSTOMERS. *TR
WHEN STEERING WHEEL IS TILTED TO LOWEST POSITION TURN SIGNALS FAIL TO OPERATE. *AK
WHILE VEHICLE WAS BEING SERVICED FOR AN OIL CHANGE, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE STABILIZER BAR LINK BOLTS WERE MISSING FROM THE FRONT END. *TT
WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED, THE DRIVER'S TIRE TURNED OUTWARD, WHICH WAS THE RESULT OF A BROKEN TIE ROD. *JB
I JUST HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT STABILIZER BAR LINKS ON MY 1998 EXPEDITION. MY HUSBAND HAD TO REPLACE THE LINKS ON HIS 1997 EXPEDITION DURING THE PAST YEAR, TOO. *AK
TURN SIGNAL CONTROL MALFUNCTIONS. RIGHT SIGNAL NOT WORKING UNLESS STALK IS PULLED SLIGHTLY BACK AND LANE CHANGE FEATURE IS USED. EMERGENCY FLASHERS FAIL TO OPERATE. PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT AND IS NOW CONSTANT.*AK
ON MAY 24, 2003, I (MELODY) BACKED IN MY 1998 EDDIE BAUER FORD EXPEDITION INTO MY GARAGE AROUND 8:15 PM FOR THE NIGHT. AROUND 8:30 PM, MY SON AND I LEFT WITH A NEIGHBOR TO A HOUSEWARMING PARTY 2 BLOCKS AWAY WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS ASLEEP IN THE HOUSE. WE RETURNED TO OUR HOME AROUND 10 PM AND DID EVEYTHING AS USUAL (SHOWER, BED). MY SON AND I FELL ASLEEP IN THE LIVING ROOM AREA WATCHING TELEVISION AROUND 11 PM. AROUND 1:15PM I HEARD THE GARAGE DOOR SOUND LIKE IT WAS OPENED AND I PROCEEDED OUT THE FRONT DOOR AS MY HUSBAND WAS RIGHT BEHIND ME; HE HAD HEARD THE SOUND ALSO IN THE BEDROOM. AS I CREPT DOWN A FEW STEPS, WE HAD SEEN SMOKE COMING FROM THE GARAGE AREA AND I YELLED "THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE, RUN!" WE BOTH RAN BACK INTO THE HOUSE, I GRABBED MY SON SLEEPING BY THE WINDOWS AND MY HUSBAND GRABBED THE KEYS TO HIS TRUCK AND HIS CELL PHONE. MY SON AND I RAN TO NEIGHBORS HOUSES TO CALL THE FIRE DEPT. AND MY HUSBAND OPENED THE FRONT SIDE ENTRANCE INTO THE GARAGE AND MOVED HIS TRUCK THAT WAS PULLED INTO THE DRIVEWAY OF THE HOUSE. WE STOOD ACROSS THE STREET WATCHING OUR HOUSE BURN WHILE THE FIRE DEPT. EXTINGUISHED THE FLAMES. AS MY HUSBAND AND I SAT OUTSIDE OUR BURNED HOME THAT EARLY MORNING, WE CONTACTED STATE FARM TO MAKE A CLAIM AND FIND OUT WHAT TO DO. ON JUNE 9, 2003, INSURANCE INVESTIGATORS AND A REPRESENTATIVE FROM FORD MOTOR CO. CAM TO THE HOUSE TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WHICH ORIGINATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE. LATER, MY HUSBAND AND I WERE INFORMED THAT QUITE POSSIBLY THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH OR CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH MAY HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE.*AK
THE VEHICLES SPARK PLUGS BLEW AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO BE INOPERATIVE. *NLM
WHILE DRIVING, BLEW A #3 SPARK PLUG. *TT
WHILE CHECKING FRONT SUSPENSION CONSUMER OBSERVED THAT DRIVER'S SIDE LINKAGES BROKE. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK
THE CABLE WHICH HOLDS THE ASSEMBLY OF THE SPARE TIRE UNDER THE VEHICLE BROKE WHILE DRIVING AND CAUSED THE TIRE TO DROP ONTO THE ROADWAY. *NLM
THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, AND STRIPPED ALL OF THE THREADS OUT. *AK *TS *JB
AUTO TENDS TO VIBRATE CONSTANTLY AT OR BETWEEN 65/75 MPH HAVE SPENT NUMEROUS TIMES GETTING IT ALIGNED BUT DOESN'T SEEM TO HELP PROBLEM. *JB
FRONT RIGHT STABILIZER LINK FAILED ON MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION. *NLM
I HAVE A 1998 FORD EXPEDITION XLT, AND I HAVE FOUND THAT BOTH FRONT STABILIZER BAR LINKS ARE BROKEN OFF. THIS IS A MAJOR ROAD HAZARD TO MY LIFE AND ANYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. HAS THIS BEEN RECALLED. I KNOW SOMEONE THAT JUST HAD TO REPLACE THEIRS. IF NOT FOR THEM I WOULD BE NO WISER. *JB
THE STEERING STABILIZER BOLTS BROKE. *JB
TIE ROD BROKE WHILE DRIVING OFF HIGHWAY 25-30 MPH, RESULTING IN TIE ROD AND BALL JOINT TO BE REPLACED. *JB
MY 1998 FORD EXPEDITION'S RIGHT TORSION BAR JUST SNAPPED IN HALF ON MARCH 21, 2003. WHILE SITTING IN MY GARAGE. I HAD JUST GOTTEN HOME, RIGHT BEFORE IT HAPPENED THANK GOODNESS. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED. I WAS TOLD THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I WAS GIVEN THE TORSION BAR AS PROOF TO OFFER FORD THAT IT IS INDEED A DEFECT. HOWEVER, FORD REALLY DOES NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT. THIS IS MY PROBLEM AND THEY WILL DO NOTHING. ( I WAS TOLD TO HOLD ON TO MY RECEIPT, JUST IN CASE THERE IS A RECALL) I HAVE FOUND OVER 31 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED? NO ONE WAS HURT THIS TIME, BUT, WHAT ABOUT THE NEXT. I CAN'T STAND THE THOUGHT OF PUTTING MY CHILDREN AND MYSELF BACK IN THIS CAR KNOWING THE LEFT ONE COULD BREAK JUST AS EASY AS THE RIGHT ONE DID AND I COULD BE ON THE HIGHWAY THIS TIME. *JB
THE ACCELERATOR BECAME STUCK, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LUNG FORWARD.*JB
POWER WINDOWS, FRONT AND BACK FAIL TO OPERATE. DRIVERS SIDE WILL POWER DOWN, BUT WILL NOT POWER UP. SOMETIMES WHEN I CONTINUOUSLY OPERATE THE SWITCH I CAN HEAR A CLICKING NOISE ALMOST LIKE SOMETHING IS NOT CONNECTING. I HAVE NOT YET TAKEN IT TO A DEALER TO INVESTIGATE BECAUSE I AM AFRAID THE COST TO 'FIX' WILL BE HUGH. I HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLES WITH THE REAR WINDOW WIPER. IT HAS NEVER WORKED CONSISTENLY. I HAD IT WORKED ON ONE TIME, THE DEALER SAID IT WAS LOCKED UP AND FIXED IT. IT WORKED ABOUT TWICE AND HAS NOT WORKED SINCE, THAT WAS ABOUT A YEAR AGO.*AK
THE TORSION BAR BROKE.*JB
FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE TORSION BAR (CALLED A SPRING BY MY MECHANIC) CRACKED IN 2 PIECES CAUSING VEHICLE TO LEAN TO THE LEFT. ABOUT A MONTH LATER THE RIGHT SIDE BAR ALSO CRACKED CAUSING VEHICLE TO LEAN TO THE RIGHT. VEHICLE IS BARELY DRIVABLE IN THIS CONDITION.*JB
THE FRONT TORSION BAR BROKE.*JB
NUMBER THREE SPARK PLUG AND ASSEMBLY BLOWN OUT OF HEAD. I HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE COMMON WITH MANY 5.4 LITRE MOTORS SINCE EXPERIENCING THIS. LOCAL FORD DEALER TOWNE FORD IN REDWOOD CITY WANTED $2,000.00 TO INSPECT AND THEN START TO TALK ABOUT REPAIR COSTS. TOWED VEHICLE TO MISSION VALLEY FORD IN SANTA CLARA WHERE SERVICE ADVISOR OBTAINED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM FORD TO HAVE HEAD REPLACED DUE TO NUMEROUS SIMILAR PROBLEMS. REPAIR COST $1900.00 FOR WICH I HAD TO PAY $750.00. THE MOTOR MUST BE PULLED FROM TRUCK TO REPLACE THE HEAD. I HAD BEEN INFORMED BY ONE FLEET OWNER OF TRUCKS WITH SEVERAL OF THESE MOTORS THAT HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MOTORS AS MINE, THAT ONE VEHICLE BLEW OUT A SPARK PLUG ON THE DRIVER SIDE AFTER REPLACING THE HEAD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. I HAD BOTH HEADS REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR THAT FORD HAD CHANGED THE PART NUMBERS OF THE HEADS INDICATING THAT A CHANGE HAD BEEN MADE TO THE NEW HEADS SUPPLIED FOR REPLACEMENT. THE TOTAL COST WAS $2,500.00 FOR BOTH HEADS REPLACED. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE HEADS DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH SURFACE AREA IN THEM TO PROPERLY HOLD THE SPARK PLUG SECURELY.
AT 58,000 MILES ONE OF THE SPARK PLUGS WAS BLOWN OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE REPAIR REQUIRED A REPLACEMENT HEAD ASSEMBLY; HOWEVER, NO HEADS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. ONLY OPTION FROM FORD WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE! THE ENGINE HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED AT 33,900 MILES DUE TO A PISTON SLAP PROBLEM. THE CYLINDER HEAD ONLY HAD 25,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT. FORD WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE ENGINE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 24,000 MILES.
INTERIOR LIGHT (DOME LIGHTS) STAYED ON WHILE DRIVINGVEHICLE, EVEN WHEN CONSUMER WAS NOT DRIVING. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION.*AK *TR

SPARK PLUG BLOWN OUT OF STRIPPED SOCKET
THIS HAS OCCURRED 8 OR 9 TIMES IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS' (THE MOST RECENT BEING 01/14/2003) MY 98 E/B 4X4 RECENTLY BEGAN OVER ACCELERATING AT INTERMITTENT TIMES. (I LIVE IN MN, AND HAVE NOTICED THIS PROBLEM IS WORSE WHEN THE TEMP IS BELOW ZERO.) I HAVE HAD 2 MINOR ACCIDENTS ALREADY BECAUSE OUT OF THE BLUE MY VEHICLE TAKES OFF AS THOUGH IT IS GOING 70 MILES AN HOUR. THE BRAKES DO NOT SEEM TO WORK WHEN THIS IS OCCURRING. IN ORDER TO STOP THIS FROM OCCURRING, I NEED TO QUICKLY SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, WHICH CAUSES THE ENGINE TO REV UP TO 4500 RPM. I HAVE TRIED RESTARTING THE ENGINE MULTIPLE TIMES, AND KICKING DOWN THE GAS PEDAL, AND EACH TIME THE RPM REMAINS HIGH. WHEN I AM TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND THIS BEGINS TO OCCUR, THE ENGINE REVS TO 3000 RPM, AND DRIVES ITSELF AT 65-70 MPH (ACTS ALMOST AS IF THE CRUISE IS SET). I HAVE BEEN STRANDED TWICE NOW, AND HAVE FOUND THAT ONCE THE VEHICLE SITS FOR 10 MINUTES OR SO, IT SEEMS TO BE OK.
I OWN A 1998 FORD EXPEDITION, WHEN IT RAINS ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON,THE PANEL IS SAYING DOOR AJAR(WHEN IN FACT THERE IS NO DOOR AJAR).THERFORE ALL INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON AS IF THERE WERE A DOOR AJAR. I FIND THIS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE WITH ALL THE INTERIOR LIGHTS ON EXPECIALLY AT NIGHT.FORD TOLD ME IT WAS A FAULTY SWITCH.I VE SPOKEN WITH OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE.ALSO 128 FORD SOLD ME THIS VEHICLE WITH A RECALL THAT WAS NEVER CHECKED. THEY NEVER DID A SAFETY CHECK AS THEY STATED. WHEN I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE IT WAS NEVER MOVED FROM THE SPOT WHERE I LEFT IT, AND THEY NEVER PUT A INSPECTION STICKER ON THE VEHICLE AND NEVER LOOKED IT OVER.
DRIVER AND PASSENGER POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCHES DO NOT WORK. *JB
THE AIR BAG DID NOT COME OUT ALL WAY,WHEN I PRESS THE HORN ON THE STEER WHEEL IT WILL NOT RESPOND BECAUSE THE AIRBAGE BUILT UP PRESSURE .THE AIRBAGE STUCK.*AK
VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AT 70 MPH WHEN CONSUMER LOST CONTROL AND REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. DRIVER SIDE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. SEAT BELTS WERE WORN AT THE TIME. THE CONSUMER SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES.*AK
INTERRIOR LIGHT FAILS TO GO OFF, EVEN WITH VEHICLE RUNNING. ON ONE INSTANCE, IT BEGAN FLASHING. THIS WAS VERY DISTRACTING AND DANGEROUS AS IT WAS AT NIGHT. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO TURN THE INTERIOR LIGHT OFF BY PULLING THE RELAY. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH 1999-2000 EXPEDITIONS, BUT APPARENTLY IT AFFECTS 1998 VEHICLES AS WELL.
WHILE DRIVING AT 80 MPH, VEHICLE'S LEFT REAR TIRE EXPERIENCED A BLOW OUT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE AND REPLACED THE TIRE FREE OF CHARGE. *NLM A SECOND TIRE WAS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE. A METAL BELT WAS STICKING OUT OF THE SIDEWALL, WHICH WAS THE SAME PLACE WHERE THE OTHER TIRE FAILED. SCC
1998 FORD EXPEDITION AFTER REVIEWING ALL THE COMPLAINTS LISTED I REALIZED I HAD EXPERIENCE SIMILAR ONES FOR INSTANCE SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT IN DEC/02. IN AUG./03 THE TIE ROD BROKE. WE HAVE HAD TROUBLE WITH 4X4 WORKING OR IN THIS CASE NOT. WHEN SWITCHED IN WHILE LIFTED ON A HOIST IT REGISTERS, BUT WHEN ON THE GROUND IT DOESN'T WORK. SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WEIGHT. ALSO THE DOOR LOCKS NO LONGER WORK, SOMETHING TO DO WITH A SENSOR. INTERIOR LIGHT STAYS ON IN HOT WEATHER. AND THE LIST GOES ON. *LA
JULY 2002 GOING NORTH ON I65 IN THE EDGE OF LOUISVILLE KY DRIVING APX 55 MPH THE RIGHT REAR INSIDE DUEL TIRE BLEW OUT WITH THE OUTER RUBBER AND STEEL COMING OFF THE CASING OF THE TIRE. THIS WAS THE FIRST OF TWO BLOWOUTS. THE SECOND HAPPENED OCT 2002 IN FLORIDA ON I 75 NEAR OCALA. THE FIRST TIRE WAS REPLACED BY A FIRESTONE DEALER IN COLUMBUS INDIANA AT NO COST> THE SECOND WAS REPLACED BY A FIRESTONE DEALER IN OCALA, FL. AT A 60% COSTING ME 50.24. I HAVE CONTACTED FIRESTONE AND THEY OFFERED TO GIVE ME 50% OF THE COST OF THE TIRES ON ANOTHER TIRE THEY SAID I NEED TO UPGRADE TO THE CORRECT TIRE THAT SHOULD OF BEEN PUT ON THE M/H BY FORD FIRESTONE WANTS ME TO PUT 4 TIRES THAT ARE THEIR BETTER DESIGN FOR MH USAGE. THEY WILL GIVE ME ONLY 50% ON 4 TIRES SAYING I ONLY NEED TO REPLACE THE REAR TIRES. I HAVE HAD TWO TIRES SEPERATE IN THE LAST 3,000 MILES OR SO. I DO NOT THINK THESE TIRES ARE SAFE AND I DON'T THINK IT WOULD BE SAFE TO MIX THE TWO DIFFERENT TIRES. I AM STUCK WITH 7 FIRESTONE TIRES THAT HAVE THE HISTORY OF FAILING . I HAVE REPLACED ALL THE TIRES (6 )ON THE GROUND WITH MICHELIN TIRES AT A COST OF $1,200.00. IS THERE ANY RELIEF I CAN GET FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE TIRES? DT
CONSUMER STATES INVOLVED IN A DRIVER'S SIDE FRONTAL COLLISION AT APPROX 25-28MPH. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. MR
INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTING AND LOCKING SYSTEM; LIGHTS STAY ON INSIDE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING - DISTRACTING AT NIGHT. SOMETIMES CAN TAKE UP TO 30 MINUTES TO "DECIDE" TO TURN OFF - OTHER TIMES WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING... NO REAL PATTERN HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. "DOOR AJAR" LIGHT NEVER GOES OFF EVEN THOUGH NUMEROUS CHECKS OF ALL DOORS HAVE BEEN DONE AND NONE ARE OPEN. RUNNING BOARDS AND INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON AFTER CAR HAS BEEN TURNED OFF (WHETHER LOCKED OR UNLOCKED). THESE LIGHTS DO NOT SHUT OFF FOR OVER 1 HOUR AFTER VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXITED LAST. DOOR LOCKS WILL SPONTANEOUSLY LOCK AND UNLOCK WHILE DRIVING. "BEEPING" SOUND WILL ALARM WHILE DRIVING ALERTING THAT DOORS ARE UNLOCKED OR POSSIBLY AJAR - THEN DOORS WILL LOCK AND UNLOCK - SOMETIMES ONCE, OTHER TIMES FOUR OR FIVE TIMES IN A ROW.
