TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION ACTIVATED, THE CONTACT STATED SHE APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. THE CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION DID NOT DEACTIVATE AND THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO SEVERAL VEHICLES. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BRUISING AND INJURIES TO THE KNEES AND LOWER BACK. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, NOR WAS THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION FROM THE MOTOR WHICH WAS STRIPPING THE SPARK PLUGS. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED AND ALSO ADVISED THAT SHE PURCHASE A SPARK PLUG KIT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 135,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,500.
THE RADIO WOULD TURN ON AND OFF WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE STARTER TRIES TO START THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE INTERIOR LIGHTS FLICKER AND THE HEADLIGHTS WILL TURN ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS WILL NOT ALWAYS WORK. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD MAINTAIN STEADY SPEED ON LEVEL ROAD NUMBER 3 SPARKPLUG BLEW OUT BREAKING COIL AND DROPPING SPARKPLUG ON THE ROAD. ORIGINAL SPARKPLUGS HAD NEVER BEEN CHANGED. *TR
WHILE MOVING ACROSS COUNTRY MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EJECTED THE NUMBER 3 SPARK PLUG. THIS SITUATION PLACED MY FAMILY IN HARM'S WAY AS IT OCCURRED ON THE INTERSTATE AND WAS QUITE STARTLING. THE SERVICE REP WAS ABLE TO TELL ME WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE AS SOON AS TOLD HIM THE MAKE AND MODEL. THE REPAIR COST IS SIGNIFICANT, BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR AN UNDER HOOD FIRE CAUSED BY THE FUEL VAPORS BEING IGNITED BY THE EJECTED PLUG IS OF GRAVE CONCERN. FORD IS KEENLY AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS DESIGNED A REPLACEMENT HEAD FOR THE VEHICLE, BUT REFUSES TO DO THE HONORABLE THING AND REPLACE IT AT THEIR EXPENSE. THEY INSTEAD CHOOSE TO PROFIT FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS BY CHARGING THEM FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE CYLINDER HEADS. I FIND IT PREDATORIAL THAT A CAR COMPANY WOULD MAKE A FAULTY PRODUCT AND THEN PROFIT FROM THE REPAIR OF SAID PRODUCT. THIS COULD START A NEW PRECEDENT BY SIGNALING TO OTHER CAR COMPANIES THAT IF YOU SELL A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE, YOU CAN MAKE MONEY ON THE BACKSIDE BY CHARGING FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THAT PART. THE SAFETY CONCERNS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FAILURE ARE RELATED TO THE LOUD AND SUDDEN POPPING SOUND WHEN THE PLUG EJECTS, THIS COULD EASILY DISTRACT A DRIVER AND COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE FUEL VAPORS COULD BE IGNITED SHORTLY AFTER THE PLUG EJECTS AND COULD ALSO CAUSE THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. CONSIDERING THE EXPEDITION CARRIES UP TO 9 PEOPLE THE RISK OF A TRAFFIC FATALITY IS INCREASED GREATLY. PLEASE HOLD FORD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ERROR AND LETS HOPE NO ONE GETS HURT OR KILLED UNTIL THEN. *TR
REAR SUSPENSION FAILURE WHILE ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL UPPER SUPPORT ARMS BROKE, THE FRONT OF THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL ROTATED UPWARD TO ABOUT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE AND MOVED BACKWARD, THE FRONT OF THE DRIVE SHAFT PULLED OUT APPROXIMATELY 6" BUT DID NOT DISENGAGE, THE TRACK BAR BEHIND THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS IMPACTED AND BENT, THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR SUSPENSION AIR BAG WAS DAMAGED. UPPER AND LOWER SUPPORT ARMS REPLACED, TRACK BAR REPLACED, REAR AIR RIDE SUSPENSION BAG REPLACED, BRACKETS AND HARDWARE FOUND BROKEN REPAIRED, FRONT END ALIGNMENT. SUSPENSION PARTS NOTED AS RUSTED. FUEL TANK STRAPS NOTED AS RUSTED, DRIVE SHAFT OK FOR NOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE WHILE PARKED WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACTS RESIDENCE BUT NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED IN REGARDS TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EQUIPPED WITH FIRESTONE WILDERNESS P265/70/R16 DOT8X72 TIRES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A CEMENT DIVIDER. THE CONTACT SUFFERED INJURIES TO THE FACE AND MOUTH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 127,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND SAW SMOKE ESCAPING FROM THE HOOD AND DEFROST VENTS. WHEN THE CONTACT EXIT THE VEHICLE LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE HOOD, THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT FILED A REPORT. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 167,000.
I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION XLT WITH A 5.4 L V8 WITH 130K MILES ON IT. I STARTED MY VEHICLE THIS MORNING AND IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE HAD EXPLODED FOLLOWED BY GREY SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE I DISCOVERED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE , SECOND FROM THE REAR SPARK PLUG WAS BLOWN OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD.AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THIS IS AN ALL TO COMMON PROBLEM FOR CERTAIN YEAR MODEL FORDS. THIS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT AND NOT ONLY COULD SOMEONE GET INJURED OR STRANDED BUT COULD ALSO BE LETHAL IF THE GAS FROM THE CYLINDER WERE TO IGNITE UNDER THE HOOD CAUSING AN EXPLOSION OR ENGINE FIRE. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE TO PREVENT THIS. *TR
WAS DRIVING ALONG WITH MY SON IN MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION(EDDIE BAUER SERIES) WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HEARD A POP TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND THEY SAID SPARK PLUG BLEW AND A COIL WOULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM THEY SAID I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEAD CUZ THE HOLE WAS TO BIG I HAD THIS TRUCK FOR ONLY A MONTH AND A HALF AND I'VE BEEN READING THAT IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THE STRAPS THAT SUPPORTED THE FUEL TANK WERE CORRODED AND FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO REPLACED BOTH FUEL TANK STRAPS AT A COST OF $278 TO THE CONTACT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,000. THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL COVER WAS LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. UPDATED 06/27/11
I OWN A 1999 EDDIE BAUER EXPEDITION. WAS AT A LIGHT AND TURNED RIGHT GOING ABOUT 20 MILES AND HOUR WHEN I HEARD AN EXAGGERATED POP AND IT SEEMED LIKE IT RATTLED VERY LOUDLY. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME SPARK #3 HAS POPPED OUT. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. WORST PART IS THAT IT HAPPENED AT 2:00 AM ON A DARK ROAD. HAD TO GET IT TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC. *TR
I HAVE A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION THAT HAS CONTINUOUSLY BLOWN SPARK PLUGS, I HAVE HAD IT REPAIRED SEVERAL TIMES AT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. I KEEP MY VEHICLES MAINTAINED ON A REGULAR BASIS, AND I HAVE NO WARNINGS LEADING UP TO THE SPARK PLUG BLOWING. I AM AFRAID THAT ONE OF THESE TIMES IT WILL BLOW AND MY ENGINE WILL CATCH ON FIRE. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH FORD, THAT THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE, EXCEPT TO KEEP REPLACING THE COIL PACK AND SPARK PLUGS AND CHARGING ME MORE MONEY. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN IN NOV 2007, AND I HAVE HAD TO HAVE IT SERVICED FOR THE SAME ISSUE TWO OTHER TIMES AND NOW AS OF TODAY I WILL HAVE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AGAIN. I HAVE TRUST IN MY DEALERSHIP THAT THEY ARE FULLY CAPABLE OF REPAIRING THE VEHICLE AS THEY HAVE SERVICED MY OTHER VEHICLES WITH NO OTHER PROBLEMS. *TR
1999 FORD EXPEDITION 5.4L V8 TRITON ENGINE. NUMBER 7 CYLINDER SPARK PLUG WAS EJECTED FROM THE HEAD WHILE DRIVING IN TOWN. IGNITION COIL ON TOP OF SPARK PLUG WAS SHEARED OFF OF IT'S MOUNTING ON THE HEAD. NEEDED TO USE A SPARK PLUG THREAD REPAIR KIT TO REPAIR THE THREADS IN THE HEAD AND A NEW IGNITION COIL TO REPLACE TO BROKEN ONE. APPROX $100 TO REPAIR. *LN
FORD EXPEDITION 1999 EJECTED SPARK PLUG PROBLEM. AFTER HAVING THIS PROBLEM THREE TIME ALREADY, I START RESEARCHING ABOUT IT AND SEEMS THAT 100TH OF OWNER OF FORD EXPEDITION FROM 1997 TO 2003 ARE HAVING A RECURRING PROBLEM. WHY IS NOT A RECALL ON THIS WHEN HUNDREDS OF OWNERS ARE SPENDING FROM $300 TO $700 ON REPAIRS THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE. IT IS NOTICEABLE THAT ITS A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM NOT A CUSTOMER PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. AFTER DRIVING ALL DAY, THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED FOR A FEW MINUTES. WHEN IT WAS RESTARTED, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY CAUGHT FIRE. THERE WAS SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE HOOD AND SPARKS FROM THE ENGINE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS UNKNOWN. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. NEITHER THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER HAD BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 250,000.
FOR THE 2ND TIME I HAVE HAD A SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT OF THE ENGINE. THIS TIME THE GAS CAUGHT FIRE. I MANAGED TO BEAT IT OUT WITH MY JACKET, UNHOOK THE FUEL INJECTOR, AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE THE REST OF THE WAY HOME. FORTUNATELY THE FIRE STARTED JUST AS I OPENED THE HOOD AND I GOT IT OUT BEFORE ANY DAMAGE COULD OCCUR. *TR

THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND NOTICED THAT THE TRAILING ARMS WHICH HELD THE REAR WHEELS HAD RUSTED AND BROKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE DEALER, WHEN CALLED, STATED THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS "LIMPING" AND THE REAR END DROPPED DOWN. THE CONTACT INSPECTED IT AND NOTICED THAT THE FRAME WAS COVERED WITH RUST. THE SPARK PLUG EJECTED FROM BLOCK BREAKING ELECTRONIC COIL. TWO WEEKS LATER HAPPENED AGAIN THEN AFTER A HEILCOIL WAS INSTALLED AND ON 10/15/2011 SAME HAPPENS FOR THE THIRD TIME. *TR
MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION BLEW A SPARKPLUG. THE COST TO FIX IS RIDICULOUS COMPARED TO THE WORTH OF MY SUV NOW. I CHECKED ONLINE AND THIS APPARENTLY HAPPENS ALL THE TIME TO THIS ENGINE YET THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL. WHAT IS UP WITH THIS? THIS IS DANGEROUS AND COSTLY. MY LOWER REAR CONTROL ARMS THAT ATTACH TO THE REAR AXLE FRAME RUSTED AND FAILED ON BOTH SIDES, CAUSING ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF VEHICLE. NO INJURIES. IT WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. MY NEIGHBORS 97 EXPEDITION HAD THE SAME PROBLEM 2 MONTHS EARLIER. HIS FRIENDS 98 EXPEDITION ALSO HAD THIS PROBLEM, RESULTING IN DAMAGE TO HIS VEHICLE. JUNK YARDS AND FORD DEALERSHIP SAID THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM, BUT NO RECALL AS OF YET. *TR
A SPARK PLUG BLEW/POPPED OUT THE HEAD ON OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION, CAUSING FUEL VAPOR TO LEAK OUT OF THE OPENING, AND STARTING A SMALL FIRE, WHICH WAS QUICKLY DOUSED. THIS IS THE 2ND TIME IN 3 YEARS THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED, RESULTING IN OVER $2000 IN REPAIR COSTS FOR EACH OCCURRENCE. CRANKED THE TRUCK TO DRIVE AND MOTOR BEGAN TO KNOCK AND WHITE SMOKE BEGAN TO POUR OUT. ENGINE LOCKED UP. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR RIDE SUSPENSION ON THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE FAILED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS UNSTABLE WHEN THE CONTACT WOULD ATTEMPT A TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HE DID NOT LOCATE ANY LEAKS OR FRACTURED COMPONENTS ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 99,950.
VEHICLE NEED ROCKER PANEL DUE TO RUST AND THEY ARE NOT OFFERED SO THE PROBLEM COULD BE FIXED FORD DOES NOT OFFER ROCKER PANELS THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL DUE TO STATE INSPECTION IT ALLOWS EXHAUST INTO VEHICLE I HAVE A 99 FORD EXPEDITION AND I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS OTHER FORD EXPEDITIONS AND FORD TRUCKS NEEDING THE SAME REPAIR. *TR
ON MY WAY HOME FROM KANSAS TO COLORADO WHEN WE HEARD A SOUND LIKE A FLAT TIRE BUT IT WASN'T. MY SPARK PLUG HAD SHOT OUT OF MY CYLINDER HEAD. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED FUEL TO SPRAY OUT AND START A FIRE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TRITON 5.4L ENGINES, BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL OR ANYTHING TO FIX IT. *TR
MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION WENT UP IN FLAMES LAST NIGHT (JUNE 26) IN MY DRIVEWAY. I HAD DRIVEN THE TRUCK HOME, TURNED IT OFF AND WALKED INSIDE TO GO TO BED. APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER, I WAS AWOKEN TO MY CAR HAVING SEVEN FOOT FLAMES COMING FROM THE HOOD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND WE BEGAN TRYING TO FIGHT THE FIRE. THE TRUCK IS A TOTAL LOSS. I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN MAY OF 2008 AND I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF ANY RECALL. *TR
WHEN IT RAINS MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION TURNED ON THE LIGHTS ALL BY ITSELF , AND THEN PROCEEDED TO TRY AND CRANK ITSELF WITH NO KEY. RADIO AND AIR COMES ON BY THEMSELVES, CLICKING NOISE UNDER DASH , FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS SAYING THAT IT IS A LEAK IN THE WINDSHIELD CAUSING THE COMPUTER TO GET WET. *TR
AUTOMOBILE INFO: VIN-[XXX] , ODOMETER- 189,143 MY WIFE WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AFTER LEAVING A DOCTOR APPOINTMENT WHERE SHE PAST OUT DUE THE PAIN FROM THE MEDICAL PROCEDURE. THE VEHICLE STRUCK A POWER POLE HEAD ON AT 40 MILES PER HOUR AND THE DRIVERS AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE POLICE OFFICER WHO WAS DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE AND OTHERS MADE COMMENTS THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD OF DEPLOYED. MY WIFE RECEIVED A BUMP ON HER FOREHEAD AND A SEVERE HEADACHE FROM HITTING HER HEAD ON THE STEERING WHEEL. SHE WAS WEARING HER SEATBELT. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPARK PLUGS BLEW OUT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE CYLINDER 7 BLEW OUT AND CAUSED A MAJOR ISSUE. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT THE CONTACT PURCHASE A NEW CYLINDER HEAD. AFTER THE INITIAL FAILURE, CYLINDER 3 HAD THE SAME FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 122,000.
WE HAD OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITIONS AIR SUSPENSION ACTUATORS REPAIRED AND 3 WEEKS LATER BOTH BACK AIR SHOCKS EXPLODED. IT WAS PARKED ABOUT 2 HOURS BEFORE THEY EXPLODED. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR

THE CONTACT CONFIRMED SHE HAD PREVIOUSLY RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) BUT HAD NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE FOR RECALL REPAIRS. OUR BATTERY DIED BECAUSE THE AIR FAN INSIDE THE CAR WOULD NOT SHUT OFF. ONCE I GOT CAR JUMP STARTED NOTICED THAT MANY ELECTRICAL DEVICES WERE EITHER NOT WORKING OR TURNING ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES. THE CONTACT HAD A REAR ALIGNMENT PERFORMED ON THE TIRE, BUT THE SIDE WALLS BURST ON EACH TIRE. THE CONTACT HAD THE SAME TIRE PLACED ON THE VEHICLE BY THE MANUFACTURER AFTER THE ORIGINAL ONE SPLIT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 250,000.

THIS WAS THE SECOND ONE TO HAVE DONE THIS IN A 3 YEAR SPAN, IT DAMAGED THE CYLINDER HEAD AND IGNITION COIL ALONG WITH DAMAGING MY FUEL RAIL. MY SON EXITED THE PUBLIX GROCERY STORE WHERE HE WAS WORKING AND FOUND THAT OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION WAS ON FIRE WITH NO ONE IN THE VEHICLE WITH THE KEYS IN HIS POCKET. THE FLAMES WERE COMING FROM THE ENGINE DEPARTMENT. FOUR SMALL FIRE EXTINGUISHERS WERE NOT ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED, AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO THE TWO VEHICLES PARKED ON EITHER SIDE. WE WERE HAVING NO MECHANICAL TROUBLE WITH THE VEHICLE AT ALL, IN FACT, WE HAD JUST REPLACED THE FOUR TIRES THE DAY BEFORE. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE REGARDING THE CRUISE CONTROL, WHICH WE HAD COMPLIED WITH BY IMMEDIATELY TAKING THE VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL, WHERE IT WAS TAKEN CARE OF. SUPPOSEDLY THE PROBLEM OF UNEXPECTED FIRES WAS CORRECTED. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR FATALITIES THAT OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT. THANK GOODNESS THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PARKED IN OUR GARAGE WHEN THIS FIRE OCCURRED. IT HAS CAUSED US A GREAT DEAL OF UNNEEDED AGGRAVATION, TIME AND UNAVAILABLE COSTS INVOLVED IN ACCOMMODATING OUR SON'S RESPONSIBILITY TO GET TO AND FROM WORK, ALONG WITH OUR OWN RESPONSIBILITIES. *TR
THIS COMPLAINT IS IN REFERENCE TO OUR 1999 FORD EXPEDITION. MY WIFE STARTED OUT ON HER DAILY DRIVE TO WORK. AS USUAL, SHE ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO WARM UP FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE LEAVING. ABOUT 1 BLOCK FROM OUR HOME, SHE HEARD A POP AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE, RUN ROUGH, RATTLED AND LOSE POWER. SHE ALSO HAD TROUBLE STEERING THE VEHICLE BECAUSE OF THE LOSS IN POWER. SHE WAS ABLE TO RETURN HOME WITHOUT ANY FURTHER INCIDENT. I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE LATER IN THE DAY AND FOUND THAT THE 2ND SPARK PLUG FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BLOWN OUT OF THE HEAD AND DAMAGED THE COIL. I AM REPORTING THIS INCIDENT BECAUSE I HAVE READ OF MANY FORD OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE RECEIVED A TUNE-UP AT APPROXIMATELY 92000 MILE IN 2006. IT CURRENTLY HAS AROUND 130000 MILES. *TR
WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC IN DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI, I HEARD A LOUD "POP" UNDER MY HOOD AND THEN MY TRUCK SOUNDED LIKE A STEAM ENGINE. I ALSO BEGAN TO SMELL RAW GASOLINE. I PULLED TO THE CURB AND CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD. DRIVERS SIDE REAR SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT, BREAKING OFF THE COIL PACK. GAS HAD SPRAYED ONTO THE SIDE OF MY ENGINE. MECHANIC ADVISED THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE. MANUFACTURED WITH AS FEW AS 4 THREADS TO HOLD IN A SPARK PLUG. THIN WALLED ALUMINUM CYLINDER HEADS ARE A VERY POOR DESIGN. FORD ADVISED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, BUT HAD NO INTENTIONS OF A RECALL. *TR
THE FLARED PORTION OF THE TERMINATOR FOB ON THE RETAINING/RETRACTING CABLE FOR THE SPARE TIRE FRACTURED AND SEPARATED ON MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER (I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER). *TR AS A RESULT, THE SPARE TIRE AND THE METAL CROSSPIECE RETAINER DROPPED ONTO THE STREET PAVEMENT, AND IN FRONT OF ONCOMING VEHICLES, WHICH SWERVED AND AVOIDED COLLIDING WITH THE LOOSE SPARE TIRE. I AM JUST GLAD, AND FORTUNATE, THAT THE SPARE TIRE DID NOT BOUNCE INTO THE AIR, OR END UP CRASHING THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD OF AN ONCOMING VEHICLE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF SIMILAR, IF NOT IDENTICAL INCIDENTS OF THIS SPARE TIRE CABLE BREAKAGE POSTED ON THE INTERNET. ACCORDING TO THE OWNERS MANUAL, THE CRANK MECHANISM IS DRIVEN USING THE JACK HANDLE, AND IT IS SUPPOSED TO "RATCHET" WHEN THE SPARE TIRE BECOMES SNUG AGAINST THE VEHICLE UNDERCARRIAGE, PREVENTING OVER TENSION ON THE CRANK MECHANISM AND CABLE. UPON INSPECTION, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF RUST, OR CORROSION, OR ATTEMPTED THEFT OR TAMPERING. A SMALL COLLAR PORTION OF THE TERMINATOR FOB REMAINED ON THE CABLE, WHILE FLARED PORTION BROKE AND SLIPPED OFF OF THE END OF THE CABLE. THERE ARE NOT ANY ADDITIONAL SAFETY DEVICES ON THE VEHICLE THAT RETAIN THE SPARE TIRE IN THE EVENT THE CABLE FAILS. DURING THE 2001 FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL, THE DEALER REPLACED ALL FIVE TIRES, WHICH INCLUDED THE SPARE TIRE. OTHERWISE, THE CRANK MECHANISM HAS NOT BEEN USED. I SEARCHED BUT FAILED TO FIND A REPORTED GOVERNMENT RECALL OF THIS CABLE AT HTTP://WWW.RECALLS.GOV/SEARCH.HTML. TO REPAIR THE CABLE END, I CREATED MY OWN TERMINATOR FOB USING AN ELECTRICAL SPLIT-BOLT SIZED TO THE DIAMETER OF THE CABLE. I FASHIONED A J SHAPE IN THE CABLE TO FORM A LOOP AND PLACED A SMALL SCREW THROUGH THE LOOP TO PREVENT PULL-THROUGH, ADDED A FEW DROPS OF BLUE LOCKTITE TO THE THREADS OF THE SPLIT-BOLT, AND CINCHED UP THE SPLIT-BOLT. *TR
