THE CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FOR 11 FAULTY FIRESTONE TIRE WHICH WERE REPLACED ON 2, 1991 FORD EXPLORERS, THE CONSUMER ONLY RECIEVED RECIEVED A REFUND FOR FIVE TIRES ($500) INSTEAD OF $1100. FOR ALL 11 TIRES, THE CONSUMER REQUEST THAT THE REMAINING MONEY BE SENT TO HIM. NLM
COMPLETE TREAD SEPERATION FROM LEFT REAR TIRE AT A HIGHWAY SPEED OF 65MPH. THE 1991 FORD EXPLORER IS EQUIPED WITH ORIGINAL FACTORY FIRESTONE P225/70R15 TIRES. THE TIRE SIZE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FIRESTONE RECALL. THE TREAD SEPERATION OCCURED AT FULL HIGHWAY SPEED OF 65MPH. THE TREAD LOOKS AS IF IT WAS PEELED OFF THE TIRE LIKE A BANANA PEEL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE VISIBLE STEEL BELT. I WAS DRIVING IN THE #1 LEFT LANE AT 65MPH AND THE FORCE OF THE TREAD SEPERATION CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO VEER RADICALLY TO THE RIGHT #3 LANE BEFORE I COULD GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE NARROWLY MISSING THE REAR SECTION OF AN 18 WHEEL SEMI TRUCK BY 15 FEET TO THE REAR. MY FAMILY AND I (AND THE DRIVERS AROUND ME)WERE EXTREAMLY LUCKY. OTHERS WILL NOT BE SO LUCKY. FIRESTONE NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE AND INCLUDE P225/70R15 TIRES IN THE RECALL.( DOT NUMBER: W2UU1MX131 TIRE SIZE: P225/70R15 )
ENGINE HESITATES THEN FAILS PARTICULARLY AT 90 DEGREES PLUS OUTSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE AND ENGINE UNDER LOAD. CONSEQUENT LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, BRAKES ETC AND DANGER OF NEGOTIATING TRAFFIC WHILE ATTEMPTING CONTROLLED STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS. DATE GIVEN ON PREVIOUS PAGE OF REPORT IS MOST RECENT INCIDENT. PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR IN COLDER CLIMATE. PROBLEM IS WORSE WHEN OPERATING AIR CONDITIONING. ENGINE MUST BE OFF FOR 10 TO 30 MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL RESTART. DEPENDING UPON CONDITIONS, VEHICLE CAN THEN BE DRIVEN ANYWHERE FROM LESS THAN A MILE TO IDEFINITELY WITHOUT INCIDENT REPEATING. HAVE REPLACED EDIS AT A COST OF OVER $200 AND PROBLEM NOW APPEARS FIXED. SAW REFERENCE TO IGNITION FAILURE IN TSB LISTING BUT APPARENTLY DID NOT RESULT IN RECALL OR VOLUNTARY REPAIR BY FORD. NOW SEE ARTICLES IN NEWSPAPER REPORTING NHTSA INVESTIGATION OF MILLIONS OF VEHICLES (INCLUDING EXPLORER) OVER SEVERAL MODEL YEARS. WHAT RECOURSE, IF ANY, DO I HAVE AT THIS POINT? HAS DECISON BEEN MADE TO MANDATE RECALL? ENCOURAGE YOU TO PURSUE VIGOROUSLY. JUDGING BY THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS AND REPETITIVE REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE (INCLUDING FRONT BRAKE PADS/CALIPERS THAT MUST BE REPLACED FREQUENTLY), I BELIEVE THERE WERE DESIGN FLAWS IN THIS MODEL THAT HAVE SAFETY RAMIFICATIONS AND FOR WHICH FORD HAS NOT PROACTIVELY TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY. HOW WILL I KNOW IF/WHEN A RECALL IS INITIATED? *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. *AK THE BRAKES AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. MAF SENSOR FAILED. THROTTLE BODY AND GASKET FAILED. RADIATOR IS LEAKING. THERMOSTAT FAILED. *YH
ACCORDING TO FIRESTONE TIRES NOT RECALLED, P235/75RI5 105S M/S, TREAD CAME COMPLETLY OFF! TIRE STAYED INFLATED. PLEASE LOOK INTO MORE RECALLS ON TIRES. I STILL HAVE THE TIRE. IF YOU NEED A PICTURE LET ME KNOW. NO INJURIES TO MY FAMILY BUT I STILL HAVE THE TWO REAR TIRES. MORE LIVES COULD BE LOST. PE0020; TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 50 MPH TREAD ON THE LEFT FRONT TIRE CAME OFF. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER SAFELY. THERE WAS ONE OTHER PERSON IN THE EXPLORER. NO ONE WAS INJURED. TIRE WAS SOLD WITH THE EXPLORER. OWNER NOT SURE WHAT TYPE OF FIRESTONE TIRE. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
EA00012, SPARE TIRE WINCH CABLE: WHEN OWNER WENT TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE, THERE WAS NO SPRARE TIRE ON THE EXPLORER. OWNER HAD NO IDEA WHEN OR WHERE THE TIRE FELL OFF. CABLE THAT HOLDS SPARE TIRE WAS SNAPPED IN HALF. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
THE REAR TIRES BELTS APPEAR TO HAVE SEPERATED CAUSING LARGE KNOTS ALL AROUND THE TREAD OF BOTH REAR TIRE THEY EVEN HAVE BUBBLES ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE.ALL OF THIS HAPPENED IN ABOUT A 30 MILE TRIP,YOU COULD FEEL A WOBBLE IN THE BACK THAT GROW WORSE, AND WORSE.IF I HAD NOT PULLED OF TO INSPECT THEM I AM SURE THEY WOULD HAVE BLOWN.I STILL HAVE THE TIRES BUT DON'T KNOW WHO TO CONTACT ABOUT THEM BECAUSE I CAN'T FIND A LEMANS TIRE COMPANY AND THERE IS NO OTHER MANUFACTURES NAME ON THE TIRES.
DRIVING VEH TOP WORK AND RIGHT REAR TIRE BLEW.. THIS IS ONE OF THE FIRESTONE TIRES THAT HAS BEEN IN THE NEW.. AT TIME OF LOSS WAS UNAWARE OF THE FIRESTONE TIRE PROBLEM SO HE REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES BUT STILL HAS THE THREE THAT HE REMOVED. (CLAIM 34-W488-773) *MW

TIRES ARE SHOWNING SIGNS OF TREAD SEPERATION , CRACK ALL THE WAY AROUND TIRES ON SIDEWALL JUST BELOW TREAD AREA. YOU CAN STICK A DIME INTO CRACK IN TIRES. WAS TOLD BY FORD & FIRESTONE THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT PART OF RECALL AND WERE OK. FIRESTONE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS NORMAL FOR TIRES ON LARGE SUV'S. MY FATHER HAS A 4 WHEEL DRIVE CHEVY SUBURAN EQUIPED WITH UNAROYAL TIRES OF THE SAME SIZE AND NO CRACKING OR OTHER SIGNS OF TROUBLE HAVE SHOWN UP. VEH1 BLEW OUT A TIRE-VEH FLIPPED 3 TIMES **TROOPER. OLD INSURED THEY COULD REMOVE PERSONAL BELONGINGS FROM THE VEHICLE-INSURED WAS MOVING BACK FROM COLLEGE** THE TIRE WAS A FIRESTONE ATX, BUT THEY ALREADY SOLD THE SALVAGE. (CLAIM# 53-C556-170) *MW
AT THE TIME OF TIRE FAILURE WE WEREN'T AWARE OF THE GENERAL PROBLEMS, SO WE DIDN'T KEEP THE TIRE, GET INFO ON THE DOT NUMBERS, ETC. APRIL 2000 INCIDENT, TIRE HAD A BIG BUBBLE ON IT AFTER SLIGHTLY HITTING IT ON THE CURB AT A TURN. WE REPLACED THE TIRE IMMEDIATELY. MAY INCIDENT THE CAR SKIDDED AFTER TAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN AND CAR SPUN AROUND AND HIT THE CURB. WE ASSUMED THIS WAS PURELY A SKID BECAUSE OF RAIN SLICK STREETS, BUT NOW ARE WONDERING IF THE TIRE FAILED FIRST. WE REPLACED THE TIRE AND PAID FOR OTHER DAMAGE (DAMAGE TO THE AXLE AND SEVERAL OTHER RELATED PARTS). 4 TIRES NOW ON THIS CAR ARE THE RECALLED TIRES, SO WE BELIEVE THE FAILED TIRES WERE THE RECALLED TIRES ALSO. THEY WERE BOTH WILDERNESS AT TIRES.IT NEVER OCCURED TO US TO SAVE INFO ON THE TIRES AT THAT TIME. I ALREADY ENTERED A COMPLAINT (#722389) THEN I READ THE CONSUMER COMPLAINTS AND REALIZED THAT 2 THINGS THAT I THOUGHT WERE NORMAL MIGHT NOT BE. THE FRIST ONE BEING THAT A I HEARD THE SQUISHY NOISE COMING FROM MY MASTER CYLINDER/ VACUUM BOOSTER THE PEDAL WAS ALWAYS SOFT BUT I NEVER ENCOUNTERED ANY DIFFICULY STOPPING THAT I CAN REMEMBER. THE OTHER PROBLEM IS THAT AFTER MY EXPLORER ROLLED AND CAME TO REST, THE DRIVER'S SEAT WAS COMPLETELY LAID BACK. *AK
MY ABS LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT APPROX. 5 P.M. ON 4/28/2000. I CONTINUED WITH MY DAILY ACTIVITIES AND MADE A MENTAL NOTE TO GET THIS CHECKED OUT. AT APPROX. 6P.M. I WAS TRAVELING AT AROUND 45 MPH WHEN A CAR CUT IN FRONT OF ME. I HIT THE BRAKES, THE REAR TIRES LOCKED UP, AND THE VEHICLE WENT IMMEDIATELY INTO A 90+ DEGREE SLIDE, THE VEHICLE ROLLED 1 FULL TIME AND LANDED UPRIGHT FACING THE LANE I WAS JUST IN. I'VE DRIVEN 3 CARS WITHOUT ABS AND I'VE NEVER HAD THE REAR TIRES LOCK UP SO EASILY. *AK

TWENTY MINUTES INTO A 65 MPH SPEED THE RIGHT REAR TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE BODY CAUSING A LOUD NOISE. THE TIRE DID NOT LOSE ANY AIR. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AT MID-DAY ON A PLEASENT SUNNY DAY IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. THERE WERE NO INJURIES ONLY FRIGHT. THE TIRE WAS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON MY 1991 FORD EXPLORER. THE FIRESTONE MANAGER TOLD ME THE TREAD SEPARATION WAS DUE TO THE TIRES AGE SINCE IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN MARCH 1991. I BOUGHT A NEW SET OF FOUR ATX REPLACEMENT TIRES AFTER HEARING THE FIRESTONES' MANAGER'S COMMENTS. IF THEY STAY IN ONE PIECE THEY GIVE MILEAGE OVER 90,000 MILES WHICH NO OTHER TIRE CAN MATCH, MAYBE THAT'S WHY THE TREAD COMES OFF -- IT'S TOO HEAVY WITH TREAD. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
ON 02/16/2000 THE LEFT REAR TIRE DE-LAMINATED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 75MPH. THE RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS ALSO FOUND TO BE DE-LAMINATING AT THIS TIME. BOTH TIRES WERE PURCHASED IN 1997. THEN ON 7/28/2000, A THIRD ATX TIRE, PURCHASED JAN. 1999, WAS FOUND TO BE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF DE-LAMINATION. WHEN THE MATTER WAS TAKEN UP WITH A FIRESTONE DEALER, THE DEALER DENIED THE DEFECT AND OFFERED TO PUT 40% OF THE PRICE OF THE NOW DE-LAMINATING TIRE TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF NEW TIRES. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
FIRESTONE FR480 TIRE P235/75R15 EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, CAUSING $4130 WORTH OF DAMAGE TO VEHICLE, DEALER TOLD CONSUMER THAT 2 REAR TIRES WERE IN GREAT SHAPE AND DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED, 40 DAYS LATER THE SEPARATION OCCURRED. *SLC
CONSUMER SHUT ENGINE OFF AND WENT INSIDE A BUSINESS FOR A SHORT PERIOD. THEN WAS NOTIFIED THAT BLACK SMOKE WAS COMING FROM WINDOW. GOT A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. BUT, BY THIS TIME THERE WERE FLAMES SHOOTING FROM BEHIND THE DASHBOARD. *AK
DRIVER'S SEAT BELT LATCH WOULD NOT DISENGAGE FROM THE LATCH MECHANISM, CAUSING THE OCCUPANT TO BECOME TRAPPED IN THE SEAT. *AK.ET.
BEARINGS WERE LOOSE, CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO PULL FRONT WHEELS BACK AND FOWARDS, CONSUMER FEARS THAT WHEELS MAY FALL OFF. *AK
THE STEEL FIBERS WERE PROTRUDING THROUGH THE CONSUMER FIRESTONE ATX TIRES, THE CONSUMER REPLACED ALL FOUR TIRES AND REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT BUT WAS DENIED. NLM
THE HEAD GASKET FAILED IN THE ENGINE. THE REPAIR BILL WAS $627.69. I TALKED TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY'S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT. THEY DECLINED TO PAY FOR REPAIR EVEN THOUGH THE FAILURE IS A KNOWN DESIGN DEFECT. *AK
ALL FOUR TIRES SHAKE AND WOBBLE VERY HARD. TIRES ON THE VEHICLE ARE THE FIRESTONE ATX P235/75R15 M/S. TIRES ARE THE EXACT SAME TIRES AS WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. VEHICLE IS A 1991 FORD EXPLORER. *AK THE CONSUMER REPLACED THE TIRES AND HAD A FRONT END ALIGNMENT DONE ON THE VEHICLE, THE PROBLEM COULD POSSIBLY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION, THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SHAKES AND ALSO THE STEERING IS OVER SENSITIVE. *SLC
TIRES INSPECTED BY INDEPENDENT AUTO MECHANIC/RECOMMENDED TIRE REPLACEMENT DUE TO SHIFTING OF THE TIRE TREADS/SEPARATION...BAD TIRES TAKEN TO FIRESTONE AND REPLACED AFTER PRORATION....RECEIVED SAME TIRES EXCEPT FROM A DIFFERENT DOT (HYUU) TWO OF THE FOUR ORIGINAL TIRES FROM DOT (VDUU) STILL ON THE VEHICLE...AM CONCERNED AS I AM AT A 50% FAILURE RATE ON THIS SET. *AK( DOT NUMBER: VDUU 4FA TIRE SIZE: P225/70R15 )

TRANSMISSION LEAKED OUT ALL OF ITS OIL WHILE IN HIGH GEAR (5TH) AT 65 MPH RESULTING IN OVERHEATING AND COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE MAIN DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY. AFTER A $1200 REPAIR OF THE TRANSMISSION, THE EXACT OCCURENCE HAPPENED AGAIN, THIS TIME AT 70 MPH WITH ONLY ABOUT 3500 MILES ON THE, REBUILT TRANSMISSION. ANOTHER $1200 REPAIR WAS ACCOMPLISHED BUT THIS TIME THE RUBBER PLUGS AT THE TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION CASE (WHICH WAS EXPLAINED AS THE POINT OF THE LEAK) WERE SEALED. I TRADED THE CAR ABOUT A YEAR LATER AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED A THIRD TIME DURING A TEST DRIVE BY A PERSPECTIVE BUYER.*AK
WHILE VEHICLE WAS ON AND IN THE "PARK" POSITION, TRANSMISSION JUMPED INTO REVERSE GEAR, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER AND A CRASH. THERE WAS RECALL 91V189000 UNDER WHICH THIS VEHICLE WAS SUBJECT TO, ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER, BUT DEALER NEVER MADE THE REPAIRS. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK

I HAVE GENTLY DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE NEVER WENT OFF ROAD WITH IT,CHANGED THE OIL EVERY 2500 MILES,LEASED ANOTHER CAR TO PRESERVE MY SUV,WHAT I HAVE NOW IS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE THAT IS LITERRLY FALLING APART,EVERYTHING FROM THE PAINT TO THE FASTENERS THAT HOLD THE INTERIOR TRIM ON IS FAILING.I PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR MY SUV AND THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY SHOULD TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY.DO I SOUND MAD WELL WOULDN'T YOU BE? *AK
4 FIRESTONE ATX TIRES WERE BOUGHT 9/9/95 IN FLORIDA (VEHICLE MILES=58,364). I MOVED TO COLORADO 10/30/95 AND STARTED DRIVING 45 MILES EACH WAY TO WORK IN MARCH 1999 (AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS). ON OCT. 14, 1999, THE FRONT LEFT TIRE WENT DOWN AT 70 MPH. WHEN I REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES AT GOODYEAR, THE MANAGER SAID THAT THE TIRE DIDN'T BLOW OUT. RATHER THE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT AT THE TIME, BUT I HAVE NOW!( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
WHIL ECONSUMER WAS DRIVING ANOTHER CAR HIT HER FROM BEHIND AND PUSHED HER INTO THE CURB, AND THEN INTO A TREE. NEITHER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. *AK
WHILE DRIVING GAS PEDAL GOES TO FLOOR AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY ACCELERATE. DRIVER PRESSED THE BRAKES BUT DID NOT STOP THE VEHICLE FROM REVVING. DRIVER HAD TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE TO STOP VEHICLE. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
WE WAS ON A TRIP TO KENTUCY,( 9/24/99) WE GOT RIGHT PAST THE ST. JOE MISSOURI EXIT AND THE FRONT END OF MY TRUCK STARTED SHAKING THEN I HAD A BLOW OUT. I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. I CALLED A STATE PATROL, WHO INTURN CALLED A WRECKER, (RANDY'S REPAIR 169 HWY, GOWER, MO, 424-6232). HE TOWED US BACK TO HIS GARAGE AND REPLACED MY TIRE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
PUT KEY IN THE IGNITION AND IT WOULD NOT TURN. COULD NOT TURN THE OUTER RING WITHOUT A KEY.CONSUMER HAS CONTACTED MANUFACTURER WHO TOLD THEM TO CONTACT THE DEALER*AK.
THE TIRE PEELED AWAY AND WAS FLUNG UP AND HIT THE WINDSHIELD ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. WE WERE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND WERE GOING THROUGH TWO CONCRETE BUNKERS IN THE MIDST OF SOME ROAD RECONSTRUCTION WITH AN 18 WHEELER RIGHT ON O UR BUMPER. HE DIDN'T SEE THAT THE TIRE HAD EXPLODED AND BORE DOWN ON US AND TO AVOID BEING HIT WE HAD TO RIDE ON THE RIM WHILE TRYING TO CONTROL THE TRUCK UNTIL WE COULD GET OUT OF THE SINGLE LANE OF CONSTRUCTION. WE LOST CONTROL OF THE TRUCK AFTER COMING O UT OF THE BUNKER LANE AND WENT ACROSS THE ESPLANADE. WE WERE ABLE TO COME TO A STOP BEFORE GOING INTO THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC BUT IT BENT THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK AND RUINED THE RIM. WHEN WE WENT TO A FIRESTONE DEALER AT SPRING CYPRESS AND KUYKENDAHL ROAD IN SPRING, TEXAS WE WERE TOLD THAT THE TIRES WERE OUR PROBLEM AND WE'D PROBABLY JUST PICKED UP A NAIL. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRES IN THAT TOWN.( DOT NUMBER: )
I BOUGHT THE TRUCK FROM A RESPECTABLE DEALERSHIP IN NEW JERSEY IN OCT. 1995. THE CLUTCH FAILED ME IN MAY 1997. IT WAS REPAIRED FOR APPROX. 600.00. IT THEN FAILED ME AGAIN IN AUG. 1998. IT WAS REPAIRED AGAIN BUT THIS TIME IT COSTED ME 1200.00. I WAS AMAZED THE PRICE DOUBLED. THE COMPANY THAT FIXED IT SAID THE OTHER COMPANY FAILED TO DO IT THE CORRECT WAY. NOW ONCE AGAIN IT HAS FAILED ME ON SEPT. 1999. I AM VERY DISTURBED ABOUT THIS. I CANNOT TAKE MY TRUCK BACK TO THE PREVIOUS COMPANY BECAUSE THEY WERE REPLACED BY MIDAS. DOES THIS SEEM RIGHT?
