CONSUMER EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF THE FIRESTONE TIRES RECALL (OOT-005) PRIOR TO RECALL NOTIFICATION, CONSUMER IS BEING DENIED RECALL REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE THEY WERE REPLACED BY A COMPETITIVE DEALER PRIOR TO AUGUST 9, 2000. *MJS

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN MY SUNROOF EXPLODED INTO SPLINTERS OF GLASS ALL OVER THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AND I HAD MY DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW OPEN. *AK

MASTER CYLINDER TO BRAKE BOOSTER STUD SHEARED OFF PROBABLY DUE TO STRESS CORROSION CRACK AS DETAILED IN NHTSA RECALL # 96V024001. BRAKING SERVICE SEVERELY DIMINISHED AS MASTER CYLINDER DEFLECTS TO ONE SIDE WHEN BRAKES APPLIED. FORD REFUSES TO ASSIST IN REPAIR COST EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO THEM.
RECALL REPAIR FOR LIFT CYLINDER BRACKETS (99V310001) WAS NOT PERFORMED BECAUSE THERE WERE NO PARTS AVAILABLE. NLM
A FIRESTONE ATX BLEW OUT AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON OUR 1993 EXPLORER. THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE AND CAUSED OVER $600 DAMAGE TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. WE HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE TIRES AND NOW WE HAVE A NEW SET OF FIRESTONE ATX TIRES WHICH WE REALLY DO NOT WANT IF THERE IS A KNOWN SAFETY HAZARD. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235/75/15 )
SPRING TO THE TROTTLE GAUGE STUCK, CAUSING CAR TO ACCELERATE AT FULL THROTTLE. I INITIALLY THOUGHT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS STUCK BECAUSE AS SOON AS I TOOK MY FOOT OF THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AT FULL THROTTLE. IN A PANIC BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR WITH MY BRAKES, I THREW IT INTO PARK KNOWING THE VEHICLE MUST SLOW DOWN. I WAS GOING 55 MPH AT THE TIME AND COULD NOT STOP THE CAR AT ALL WITH THE BRAKES. THE MANUFACTURER SAYS THIS IS A MECHANICAL FAILURE NOT COVERED BECAUSE MY WARRANTY EXPIRED. MY INSURANCE WILL NOT COVER THE DAMAGE TO CAR BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED AND CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF I DIDNT DECIDE TO STOP THE CAR IN THE MANNER I CHOSE. *AK
WHILE CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 55 MPH , THE SPRING FOR THE THROTTLE GAUGE BROKE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO INTO FULL THROTTLE. IN ORDER FOR CONSUMER TO STOP VEHICLE HE HAD TO APPLY THE BRAKES UNTIL THEY WERE WORN DOWN AND PUT VEHICLE IN PARK. *AK.ET.
WE HAVE HAD CONTINUOUS PROBLEMS W/ OUR 93 EXPLORER. THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 93000 MILES AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE ABS LIGHT KEEPS FLICKERING ON AND OFF AND WE ARE NOT SURE WHICH SENSOR IS OUT. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE AN ARM & LEG JUST TO TELL US WHICH SENSOR IT IS. MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE NOT BEEN POSITIVE. THEY CHARGE TOO MUCH FOR SIMPLE TASKS AND I HAVE BEEN LIED TO ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS ABOUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR VEHICLE. IT IDLES ROUGH AND WE HAVE REPLACED ALL OF THE PARTS THE DEALERSHIP HAS SAID WERE BAD AND IT STILL IDLES REAL ROUGH. WE HAVE SPENT MORE ON AUTO REPAIRS THAN WHAT THE VEHICLE IS WORTH. THE AIR CONDITIONER RECENTLY WENT OUT, THE BLOWER MOTOR WAS REPLACED, NOW THEY ARE TELLING US IT IS THE FAN SWITCH - SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GIVE FORD MOTOR COMPANY A SWIFT KICK. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE AS LONG AS I LIVE. IT SEEMS THAT FOREIGN VEHICLES ARE WORTH THE FEW EXTRA BUCKS IN THE LONG RUN. *AK
THE BUILT IN HANDLE USED TO CLOSE THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS BROKEN OFF FROM THE DOOR PANEL. I HAVE BROUGHT THE FORD EXPLORER TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I WILL HAVE TO PURCHASE AN ENTIRE DOOR PANEL TO FIX THE PROBLEM. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT INADEQUATE MATERIALS WERE USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS DOOR PANEL AND HANDLE UNIT. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A FORD EXPLOERE, LIMITED EDITION THAT HAS BEEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF. *AK

FIRESTONE ATX TIRE P235/75R15 EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, OWNER REPORTING THAT THE VEHICLE HAD THREE SETS OF THESE TIRES. ON THE SECOND SET OF TIRES AFTER 40,000 MILES OF WEAR AT HIGHWAY SPEED OF 55 MPH, DRIVER NOTICED A FLAPPING SOUND AND WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND PULL OVER, FOUND TREAD SEPARATING FROM THE TIRE. LAST TWO SETS WERE BROUGHT FROM A TIRE STORE. TIRE NOT AVAILABE FOR INSPECTION. *AK *SLC

FRONT DISC BRAKE PADS WEAR ABNORMALLY FAST, I'VE REPLACED THE PADS 5 TIMES IN 100000 MILES OF OPERATION. WHEN DRIVING THIS VEHICLE YOU CAN FEEL THAT MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE BREAKING IS DONE BY THE FRONT BREAKS, I FEEL THAT THE BRAKE DESIGN FOR THIS VEHICLE IS INADAQUATE IT SHOULD HAVE DISC BREAKS INSTALLED IN THE REAR TAKING UP MORE OF THE BRAKING LOAD. *AK
A 2 1/2 FOOR SECTION OF TREAD CAME OFF THE TIRE WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60-65 MPH DURING A WINTER MONTH IN VIRGINIA. THE TIRE WAS PROPERLY INFLATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT OVERLOADED, WITH ONLY THE DRIVER IN THE VEHICLE.*AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75/R1 )
INSIDE LEFT DOOR HANDLE COMES COMPLETLY OFF IN HAND WHEN CLOSING DOOR. BOTTOM HINGE ON LEFT DOOR BROKE. CATALATIC CONVERTER RATTLES WHEN ACCELERATED TO 55 MPH. *AK
BOTH REAR ROCKER PANELS WERE RUSTED OUT. THE BODY HAS A 6 YEAR WARRANTY AGAINST RUST, BUT THE RUST WAS NOT NOTICED UNTIL THE SIDE SKIRTS OVER THE ROCKER PANELS WERE KNOCKED OFF. WHEN I CALLED FORD, THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO, BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OVER 6 YEARS OLD. THE RUST WAS BAD ENOUGH , THAT IT HAD TO BE DEVELOPING WELL WITHIN THE 6 YEAR TIME FRAME.*AK
THE CAR SHAKES AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 65 MPH. IT SHAKE SOO MUCH I BELIEVE WE ARE DAMAGING PARTS OF THE CAR THAT COULD LEAD TO AND ACCIDENT OR PREMATURE DETERIORATION AND WEAR AND TEAR. I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH THE DEALERS RESPONSE SIGHTING NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I BELEIVE THERE TO BE A DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR MORE THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. OTHER PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD WITH THIS CAR INCLUDE 3 FRONT END WHEEL BEARING REPLACEMENTS WHICH IN HINDSIGHT MIGHT HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THIS VIBRATION BEFORE IT BECAME SO NOTICEABLE. I AM VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ENGINE MOUNTS. THEY ARE A BASIC AND INTEGRAL PART OF THE CAR THA SHOULD NOT WEAR OUT. I AM CONCERNED ENOUGH THAT THIS SEVERE VIBRATION COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND WARRANTS CONSIDERATION FROM NHTSA AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY.
HIGH SPEED TREAD SEPARATION ON I-95 NEAR BRUNSWICK, GA. MODERATE TEMPERATURES (70'S). VEHICLE WAS PULLING A U-HAUL TRAILER WELL BELOW VEHICLE OR TIRE LOAD LIMITS. SEPERATION OCCURED APPROXIMATELY 1.0 HOURS INTO DRIVE. AIR PRESSURE APPROX. 30 PSIG. TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH NEW OF SAME MODEL. ALTHOUGH I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL, THE TIRE APPEARED TO HAVE DISENTIGRATED. PULLING A LOADED TRAILER WAS NOT ROUTINE FOR THIS VEHICLE. *AK
CONSUMER REPLACED FIRESTONE ATX TIRES (P235/75R15) DUE TO EXCESSIVE NOISE AND IS REQUESTING REIMBURSEMENT, CONSUMER STATED THAT SOME TIRES STARTED TO SHOW SOME TREAD SEPARATION. *SLC *JB CONSUMER STATED HE BOUGHT BRIDGESTONE TIRES BECAUSE FIRESTONE REJECTED HIS CLAIM AND ALL OTHER TIRES WERE OUT OF STOCK OR TOO EXPENSIVE, CONSUMER ALSO STATES THAT A FRONT TIRE WENT SOFT AND THE FRONT END PUSHED BADLY IN THE CORNERS, ANOTHER TIME A REAR TIRE WENT SOFT AND THE TAIL SWUNG OUT IN THE CORNERS, THIS WAS WITH THE NEW REPLACEMENT TIRES. *SLC
PREMATURE HEAD GASKET FAILURE IS APPARENTLY A COMMON FORD PROBLEM. THIS HEAD GASKET BLEW AT ONLY 70,000 MILES ON A 6-YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THIS IS TOO EARLY FOR THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM TO HAPPEN. IT COULD BE A FLUKE, BUT THERE ARE INTERNET SITES ABOUT FORD VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. REPAIRS ARE VERY COSTLY FOR PARTS THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE GONE BAD IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT EVER DRIVEN ROUGHLY OR PUT UNDER UNUSUAL STRESS--JUST CITY DRIVING. I THINK THAT THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH FORD HEAD GASKETS THAT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. THANK YOU.*AK

RESULTS IN OIL LEAK WHICH COULD LEAD TO FIRE AS WELL AS A SOURCE OF POLLUTION. FORD MOTOR COMPANY DOES NOT HAVE ANY REPLACEMENT VALVE COVERS ON HAND. HOW CAN A COMPANY OF THIS SIZE GET AWAY WITH SELLING AS MANY OF THESE VEHICLES AS THEY HAVE AND NOT HAVE REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE TO THERE CUSTOMERS? *AK
MANUFACTURER FAILS TO MAKE LEFT ENGINE VALVE COVER FOR HIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE THAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED. FINALLY RECEIVED PART 5 WEEKS TO THE DAY AFTER IT WAS ORDERED. *AK
3 OF THE 4 TIRES HAD THE TREADS OPENNING AND SEPARATING ON THEM SHOWING THE WIRES INSIDE THE TIRES, SOME SEPARATION ALSO OCCURED AROUND THE OUTSIDE RIM OF THE TIRE, THIS RESULTED IN HANDLING PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE, THE TIRES WERE LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD WITH 83% OF THE TREAD REMAINING, FIRESTONE REFUSES REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE THE CONSUMER NO LONGER HAS THE TIRES. NLM
THE WELD FAILED DUE TO MANUFACTURE DEFECT UNDER NORMAL USE. THIS FAILURE SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT THE COST OF THE MANUFACTURE WITH NO LIMITATIONS TO MILEAGE OR YEARS ON THE ROAD.

VEHICLE EXPERIENCED FAILURE IN THE SERVICE BULLETIN (94-8-14), HOWEVER REPAIRED PRIOR TO BULLETIN, REPAIRED STARTER, BATTERY AND CABLES, BATTERY ACID LEAKAGE CAUSED DAMAGE. *MJS
AT APPROXIMATELY 1930 ON NOVEMBER 25, 1999, WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON I-81 ONE MILE NORTH OF THE WVA/VA STATE LINE THE TREAD ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE SUDDENLY SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE BODY. AT THE TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 65-70 MPH IN THE LEFT LANE. THE TREAD SEPERATION WAS ABRUPT, BUT THE CORDS MAINTAINED INTEGRITY LONG ENOUGH TO SAFELY SLOW THE VEHICLE AND GET TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. ON OR ABOUT 11/03/99 THE RIGHT REAR TIRE FAILED WHILE IN A MALL PARKING LOT. THE TIRE FAILED THROUGH LOSS OF AIR AND A BLISTERING EFFECT ON THE TREAD AND BODY. THE VEHICLE MECHANIC WHO LOOKED AT THIS TIRE REFUSED TO LET THE DRIVE LEAVE THEIR ESTABLISHMENT WITH THE TIRE ON THE GROUND. THEY WOULD PUT THE SPARE ON FOR FREE, INDICATING THEIR CONCERN, NOT JUST AN EFFORT TO SELL A NEW TIRE.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON I10 & THE TIRE THREW THE TREAD WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING AT 70 MPH. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY STARTED SHAKING AND MOVING ERRATICALLY. SHE ALMOST LOST CONTROL, BUT FORTUNATELY MANAGED TO GET IT STOPPED WITHOUT A ROLLOVER. *AK( DOT NUMBER: P235 TIRE SIZE: 75R-15 )
MADE A TURN & CAME TO A STOP, DRIVER'S SEAT WENT FORWARD. PULLED TO SIDE OF ROAD & CHECKED THE SEAT. NOTICED THE BOLTS WERE BROKEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ANCHOR SUPPORT. WILL BE TAKING VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR REPAIRS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ON A 7 HOUR TRIP THERE WAS VERY BAD VIBRATION. REPLACED TWO TIRES ON FRONTS, DIDN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM. CONTACTED DEALER, AND THEY SAID SHAKING PROBLEM WAS WITH THE 1993 VEHICLES. NEEDED TO INSTALL MOTOR MOUNTS BRACKETS AND SHOCK ABSORBERS ON THE REAR. NOT UNDER WARRANTY WILL NOT REPAIR. *AK
SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED BY H&L ON 4/19/99 PART # AWSF-4C, MILEAGE WAS 74,497. FAILURE OF PLUGS WAS DURING TRIP, AT ANOTHER DEALER RHINEBECK FORD, 914-876-4440, THEY REPLACED THEM WITH AWSF-42P- STATING WRONG PLUGS INSTALLED BY H&L. H&L RESPONDED INITIALLY THAT THESE WERE THE CORRECT PLUGS, BUT LATER AGREED THAT THE 42P WERE THE RIGHT ONES. SUBSEQUENT, THE VEHICLE RAN ROUGH AND HAD POOR PERFORMANCE. H&L CONTACTED REGARDING THIS, NOTED TO MONITOR FLUID LEVELS, TUNE UP WOULD NOT CURE PROBLEM. MANAGER STATED IT COULD BE A CRACKED HEAD. WITHIN 7 DAYS SINCE 10/11/99, ENGINE IS IN SHOP, WHITE SMOKE COMING OUT OF EXHAUST AND FLUIDS INDICATE A LEAK. MANAGER ALSO STATED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE EXPLORER FOR THAT YEAR. CAR NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, EXPIRED AT 89,830. FEEL FORD IS RESPONSIBLE!

CONSUMER CONTACTED THE STORE WHERE HE PURCHASED THE TIRE FROM.*AK ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM LOGIC DOES NOT ALLOW/PERMIT BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHCILE AFTER TIRE FAIURE. THIS IS SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. *YH
MY SON WAS DRIVING DOWN I-95 IN SOUTH CAROLINA AT ONLY ABOUT 50 MPH DUE TO RAIN WHEN HE SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, LEFT THE ROAD AND ROLLED OVER THREE TIMES INTO A DITCH AND TOTALED THE CAR. THERE WAS NO APPARENT EXPLANATION FOR WHY HE LOST CONTROL. WE HAD JUST RECENTLY REPLACED TIRES WITH NEW FIRESTONE ATX II. WHEN WE ASKED THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER ABOUT RECOVERING THE TIRES WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE BLOWN OUT. SINCE THIS ACCIDENT OCCURED PRIOR TO ANY PUBLICITY ABOUT FIRESTONE TIRE FAILURES WE DID NOT ASK TO SEE THE TIRES. THE TIRE WAS ONLY 4-6 MONTHS OLD WITH EXCELLENT TREADS, WE HAD TO GET TWO NEW FIRESTONES INSTALLED AT SONNY'S TIRE & ALIGNMENT IN SUMMERVILLE, SC. BECAUSE THE BLOWOUT OF THE TIRED OCCURRED ON THE LEFT REAR OF THE EXPLORER, MY WIFE, WHO WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME, WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL ON THE INTERSTATE UNTIL WE COULD PULL OFF ONTO THE SAFETY LANE. AT THE TIME, WE DID NOT REALIZE THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND WE DID NOT REPORT THE BLOWOUT. THE FIRM IN SUMMERVILLE THAT INSTALLED THE NEW TIRES STATED THAT THE BLOWOIT HAD OCCURRED DUE TO TIRE FAILURE FROM TREAD SEPARATION AND NOT FROM RUNNING OVER A FOREIG OBJECT. THE BLOWOUT OCCURRED ON THE SIDE OF THE TIRE. WE STILL HAVE THE MATE TO THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT , SINCE IT WAS MOUNTED UNDERNEATH THE CAR AS A SPARE. ACCELERATOR COLLAPSED AND ENTERED INTO FULL ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING
I HAD BEEN TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE FOR APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES WHEN I NOTICED A VIBRATION. I SLOWED FROM 65 MPH TO 60 MPH. WITHIN THE NEXT MILE OR SO, THERE WAS A LOUD BANG AND I WAS INSTANTLY GOING SIDEWAYS. WHEN I GOT THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AND STOPPED, I INITALLY THOUGHT I HAD STRUCK SOMETHING ON THE ROAD BECAUSE ALL OF MY TIRES WERE STILL INFLATED. THEN SOMEONE WHO STOPPED TO HELP ME POINTED OUT THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE TREAD ON THE REAR DRIVER'S TIRE. I BELIEVE IT IS SIGNIFICANT TO NOTE THAT I HAD JUST HAD MY TIRES ROTATED ABOUT A MONTH PRIOR AT A TIRES PLUS STORE AND THEY DID NOT INFORM ME OF ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY TIRES.*AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

PUT FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL AND TRUCK ACCELERATED AND PUSH BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET TRUCK DID NOT STOP. TILL IT HIT ANOTHER CAR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE SAME THING HAPPEN. *AK
