WHENEVER PLACEING IN 4X4 MODE, AND THEN PRESSING GAS PEDAL, VEHICLE WOULD SLIP OUT OF 4X4 MODE. THIS IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM. BEEN TO DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES FOR PROBLEM , BUT IT WAS NOT RESOLVED. *AK
THE WILDERNESS ATX II MODEL TIRE EXPLODED WHILE TRAVELING AT 75 MPH, RAPPED AROUND THE REAR AXLE, AND CAUSED VEHICLE TO ROLL OVER. MANUFACTURER NEVER CONTACTED. *AK
ONE SPOT ON ONE TIRE WORE THROUGH INTO THE STEEL BELT WHILE THE REST OF THE TIRE TREAD HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH QUITE A BIT OF TREAD LEFT ON THEM. IT WAS ONLY BY CHANCE THAT I NOTICED THE WORN SPOT AND FORTUNATELY IT WAS BEFORE GOING ON A LONG TRIP. NEW TIRES, SAME TYPE WERE PURCHASED. MORE RECENTLY, I ROTATED THE ORIGINAL SPARE ONTO THE CAR AND NOTICED A STEERING PULL TO ONE SIDE AND FOUND IT WAS NOT AN ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. IT TURNED OUT THE ORIGINAL SPARE ALSO HAD ONE WORN OUT SPOT DOWN TO THE STEEL BELT WHILE THE REST OF THE TIRE WAS FINE. AT THE STORE I ASKED WHY IT MIGHT HAPPEN IN PARTICULAR ON TWO TIRES. THEY MENTIONED THERE PROBABLY WAS A DEFECT IN THE TIRE AND THEY WERE TO SAVE THE TIRE SO I COULD CONTACT FIRESTONE. HOWEVER, THEY SAVED THE WRONG TIRE SO I DON'T HAVE IT. BUT HEARING OF THE DEFECTS ON THE ALL TERRAIN FIRESTONE TIRES PROMPTED ME TO RELAY THIS EXPERIENCE OF TWO ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT FIRESTONE TIRES THAT HAD SINGLE SPOTS WORN DOWN PAST THE STEEL BELTS ON OTHERWISE 1/2 WORN TIRES. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
AFTER READING SOME INFO ON THE RECENT FIRESTONE TIRE PROBLEMS I HAD THE SAME FAILURE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT JUST SOME MINOR DAMAGE FROM THE TIRE SLAPPING THE REAR BUMPER AND WHEEL WELL. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW ABOUT THE INCIDENT. JUST LAST MONTH I BOUGHT ANOTHER EXPLORER WITH THE SAME TIRES. I GUESS I HAVE TO GET THEM REPLACED. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
I THOUGHT MY FRONT END WAS SHAKING FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELLING ABOUT 40MPH BECAUSE I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE TIRE. MY CHILDREN AND I HEARD A LOUD BANG AT THE SIDE OF THE CAR. MY HUSBAND WAS FOLLOWING IN HIS CAR AND SAW THE TIRE FALL OFF. IT ALSO KNOCKED OFF PART OF THE SIDE PANEL OF THE CAR. THE CAR SWERVED VIOLENTLY BUT I GOT IT UNDER CONTROL TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE RAOD. THE ENTIRE TREAD HAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE AND COME OFF. THE TREAD BLEW OFF THE ENTIRE SIDE PANEL OF THE CAR. INSURANCE ESTIMATE WILL BE ABOUT $1500.00 NOT COUNTING THE COST OF TIRE REPLACEMENT. I HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THE ENTIRE SET WITH MICHELINS. WE COULD ALL HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED. FILDED INCEDENT REPORT WITH FIRSTONE IN MAY. THEY READILY PAID FOR NEW TIRE NAD REPAIRS TO VEHICLE. OUR 20 YEAR OLD SON WAS TRAVELING HOEM FROM COLLEGE ON I75 IN MIDDLE LAND WHEN TREAD SEPARATED . THREW HIM TO LEFT EMERGENCY LAND. LUCKILY HE CONTROLLED VEHICLE AND CAME TO STOP. TIRE DID NOT LOSE PRESSURE ANDLUCKILY THE SHREDING TORE UP TEH REAR FENDER ETC AND DID NOT GO INTO AXEL. 2 SEPARATE FAILURES DUE TO DELAMINATION( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
I BOUGHT THE CAR USED. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC TO LOOK OVER AND RECOMMEND WHAT WORK NEEDED TO BE DONE IN ORDER FOR ME TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE. I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL LIST. AMONG THE THINGS THAT I SAID NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED/REPLACED WERE THE TIRES. THE DEALER REFUSED. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND I BEGAN DRIVING IT. IT IS MY FIRST SUV AND I WAS UNCOMFORTABLE WITH THE WAY IT HANDLED ON BUMPS IN THE ROAD, OVER RAILROAD TRACKS, IN DIPS IN THE ROAD, ETC. SEVERAL TIMES WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR REGULARLY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE, I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE WAY IT HANDLED. BECAUSE THE DEALER "COULD NOT DUPLICATE" THE PROBLEM, THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS OK. THEY ALSO SUGGESTED THAT BECAUSE IT IS AN SUV I SHOULD GET USED TO THE ROUGHER RIDE. THE PROBLEM HOWEVER WAS IN THE WAY I FELT I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, NOT THAT THE RIDE WAS ROUGH. I CONTINUED TO COMPLAINED ABOUT THE WAY IT HANDLED ON SUBSEQUENT VISITS. I EVEN BEGAN ASKING THEM TO LOOK AT THE TIRES. I BECAME CONCERNED ABOUT THE TIRES AS I SAW DRY ROT ON THE OUTER EDGES OF EACH OF THE TIRES. AGAIN, I BELIEVE EVERYTIME I TOOK IT IN I ASKED THEM TO EXAMINE THE TIRES AND LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD BE CONCERNED. THEY WOULD NOTE THE TIRE TREAD ON MY PAPERWORK BUT NO ONE EVERY COUNSELED ME. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE STATION NEAR MY HOME TO SEE WHAT THEY THOUGHT. I WAS TOLD TO REPLACE THE TIRES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND TO TRY NOT TO DRIVE FOR MANY MILES AT A TIME AND ESPECIALLY DURING HOT DAYS. I REPLACED THE TIRES WITHIN THE WEEK. I AM CONCERNED NOW ABOUT THE FIRESTONE RECALL AND THAT VA IS IN PHASE THREE. I REPLACED MY OLD FIRESTONE TIRES WITH MICHELINS AND DO NOT WISH TO HAVE A FIRESTONE PRODUCT ON ANY OF OUR CARS. I HAVE HAD 4 INCIDENTS WITH THESE TIRES. ALL OCCURRED ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE AT SPEEDS OVER 55 MPH. ONE OCCURRED ON AUGUST 23, 1999, COMING HOME FROM MY PARENTS HOME IN WEST PALM BEACH. THE THREADS SEPARATED. I NOTICED A STRANGE NOISE AND UPON ARRIVING AT HOME A PIECE OF THE TIRE WAS LOOSE AND I HAD BEEN TRAVELLING ON THE INSIDE PART. BOUGHT A NEW TIRE, SAME BRAND. TWO MORE OCCURRED AS MY SON WAS DRIVING FROM MIAMI TO TALLAHASSEE TO RETURN TO SCHOOL. FUNNY, I TOLD HIM TO TAKE MY CAR BECAUSE I HAD "GOOD TIRES". HE HAD TWO BLOW OUTS, BOTH REAR WHEELS AND HIT THE GUARD RAIL. REPLACED THESE TWO IN TLH AT A SEARS STORE, WITH OF COURSE, THE SAME BRAND AND TYPE. THE FIRST ONE WAS RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, AND I DON'T REMEMBER THE INCIDENT. THATS AN AWFUL COINCIDENCE. TOOK MY VEHICLE TO LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER, AND WAS NOT TREATED VERY KINDLY. SINCE 1998 I HAVE A NOISE (CLUNKING) COMING FROM SOMEWHERE IN MY CAR. I HAVE TAKEN IT TWICE TO JORDAN FORD AND ONCE TO MY MECHANIC FOR THIS PROBLEM. JORDAN FORD HEARD IT BUT COULD NOT LOCATE WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. I ALSO WAS TOLD THEY OTHER REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM. BUT THEY TOLD ME NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT. WHEN I ACCELERATE OR COMING OUT OF MY GARAGE, TURNING CORNERS I HEAR THIS NOISE. IT IS VERY LOUD. I SAW THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ACCELERATER PEDAL, BUT I WAS NEVER TOLD OF THIS BY FORD. BFORE WE MOVED FROM ILLINOIS IN JUNE, WE HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED. THE TIRES WERE "PERFECTLY NORMAL." WITHIN THREE MONTHS, THE TREAD IS NOW SPLITTING FROM THE BASE OF TIRE TO THE POINT WHERE STEEL BELTS ARE VISIBLE. 2 DIFFERENT FIRESTONE DEALERS CONFIRMEND THAT THE HEAT HAS CAUSED THIS TO OCCUR, "EXACTLY LIKE THE 15 INCH MODELS, BUT ONLY THE 15 INCH ARE COVERED. I'D BUY NEW TIRES OR BE VERY CAREFUL." THESE TIRES WERE FUNTIONING NORMALLY UNTIL THEY WERE EXPOSED TO EXTREME HEAT CONDITIONS. I'M NOT IN A POSITION TO PURCHASE NEW TIRES AND, I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S FAIR TO PUT MY FAMILY IN SERIOUS JEPORDY BECAUSE THESE TIRES WERE NOT PRODUCED TO WITHSTAND ALL ELEMENTS THAT THEY MIGHT ENCOUNTER. SINCE I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE USED, IT WAS TIME TO REPLACE THE ORIGINAL TIRES. I WENT TO THE DEALER IN MAY, 2000 AND THEY RECOMMENDED FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT'S WHICH I PURCHASED, AND HAD THE DEALER MOUNT AND BALANCE THE TIRES. WITH ALL THE NEGATIVE PUBLICITY AND POOR SAFETY RECORD OF THESE TIRES, I AM REALLY UPSET KNOWING THAT I AM DRIVING ON TIRES THAT MAY NOT BE SAFE. EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE TIRES CHECKED BY THE DEALER AND THEY ARE NOT THE DOT VDHL MODELS, I AM SCARED TO BE DRIVING ON THEM. I DRIVE APPROXIMATELY 60 HIGHWAY MILES TO WORK EACH DAY - AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 65 MPH. DURING RUSH HOURS - WHICH LEAVES ME EVEN MORE APPREHENSIVE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THIS PRODUCT. I SUGGEST THAT NHTSA MANDATE A TOTAL RECALL OF ALL THESE TIRES, NOT JUST THE ONES MANUFACTURED AT THE DECATUR, IL PLANT. MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY IS AT STAKE. IF ONE PLANT'S QUALITY CONTROL WAS NONEXISTANT, WHO'S TO SAY ANOTHER PLANT'S LACK OF INTEGRITY ISN'T AS GREAT? WILLDERNESS AT 16" TIRE, THE TREAD SEPARATED. WE REPLACED AS SOON AS SEEN. NO INCIDENT. NOT COVERED BY RECALL. MADE IN CANADA. TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS TO REPLACE DUE TO A SHORTAGE OF THEM. CONCERNED THAT THIS WAS BECAUSE OF FIRESTONE'S PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE PENDING RECALL. TIRES TURNED "LUMPY" IN 1998. GOODYEAR DEALER SAID IT WAS DUE TO TIRE SEPARATION AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE ON THEM AND HAVE JUST RECENTLY ORDERED NEW TIRES. .( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 255 70 R16 )
THESE TIRES DISPLAY THE WARNING SIGNS OF THE PUBLISHED REPORTS OF THE FIRESTONE TIRE FAILURES. I REPLACED THE TIRES TODAY WITH GOODYEAR TIRES. THE GOODYEAR EXPERTS INSPECTED THE TIRES AND ADVISED ME THAT THE TIRES LOOKED LIKE THEY MEET THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERSTICS OF THE RECALL TIRES. THE TIRES ARE SEPERATING AROUND THE SIDE WALL AND TREAD. I LEFT THE GOODYEAR STORE AND PROCEEDED TO THE FIRESTONE STORE FOR THEM TO INSPECT THE TIRES. THE MANAGER AT THE FIRESTONE STORE TOLD ME THAT ALL THE INFORMATION THAT HE HAD WAS WHAT I COULD GET ON THE FIRESTONE WEB SITE. HE DID NOT INSPECT THE TIRES BECAUSE HE HAS NOT BEEN TOLD WHAT TO INSPECT FOR FROM FIRESTONE. I HAVE THE TIREES IN MY GARAGE AT THIS TIME AND WOULD LIKE FOR AN INVESTIGATOR TO TAKE A LOOK AT THEM. AS REPORTED ON 9/5/00 (BEFORE THE TIRE RECALL HEARINGS ON 9/6/00) TO SENATORS RICHARD SHELBY AND FRANK LAUTENBERG AND HOUSE REPRESENTATVES W.J. "BILLY" TAUZIN AND FRED UPTON: I RECENTLY READ IN THE TIMES THAT THE EXPLORER TIRE THAT BLOWS OUT MOST OFTEN IS THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE, WHICH MAKES ME WONDER IF THERE IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE. UPON CLOSELY EXAMINING MY 96 EXPLORER (WHICH DIDN'T COME WITH FIRESTONE TIRES, BY THE WAY), I FOUND THAT THE BODY LEANS TO THE LEFT (DRIVER'S SIDE), RESULTING IN A VERTICAL SAG OF ABOUT HALF AN INCH ON THAT SIDE. I CONFIRMED THAT THE SAG IS NOT RELATED TO VEHICLE LOADING - THE SAG PERSISTS WITH BOTH VEHICLE AND GAS TANK EMPTY; OR TO WEAKENED SPRINGS - THE CHASIS STAYS LEVEL, ONLY THE BODY SAGS. ALSO, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN ANY ACCIDENTS THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THIS. SINCE THEN, OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS OR SO, I HAVE BEEN CLOSELY OBSERVING EXPLORERS AND OTHER SUV'S ON THE ROAD AND IN PARKING LOTS. THE RESULTS OF MY ADMITTEDLY NOT-SO-SCIENTIFIC SURVEY ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) ABOUT 50% OF THE OLDER EXPLORERS ON THE ROAD SHOW A SIMILAR SAG TO THE LEFT.
