THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES. ONCE IN DECEMBER 1997. ONCE IN JUNE 1998. AND ONCE ON JUNE 19, 2000. EACH TIME AS I AM COMING TO A NORMAL STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE CAR ACCELERATES. THE LAST TWO TIMES I WAS SITTING AT THE INTERSECTION WITH BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE WITH THE WHEELS SPINNING, BURNING RUBBER, UNTIL I MANAGED TO SHIFT INTO PARK. THE DEALER HAS OFFERED TO "TRADE ME OUT" BUT I AM AFRAID THEY WILL JUST RESELL THE CAR. PLUS I FEEL THAT THEY HAVE NOT ACCEPTED THAT THE CAR HAS ENDANGERED MY LIFE. AFTER THE FIRST TWO INCIDENTS, SANTA FE FORD TESTED THE CAR AND REPLACED SOME PARTS (IN JUNE 1998) I HAVE A COPY OF THAT REPAIR SHEET. SO THE INCIDENT THIS WEEK OCCURED AFTER TWO YEARS OF NO PROBLEMS. I WAS AT A BUSY, SMALL-TOWN INTERSECTION.*AK
WHEN TURNING STEERING WHEEL,WOULD HEAR A RUBBING NOISE, LIKE METAL AGAINST METAL. EVERY TIME A BUMP IS HIT, WOULD HAVE SAME NOISE PROBLEM. TOOK TO DEALER & MECHANIC INDICATED IT WAS THE LOWER BALL JOINTS THAT WERE CAUSING THE PROBLEM & THEY WERE BAD. WILL BE ORDERING REPLACEMENT PARTS.*AK
I HAD THREE TIRE FAILURES FROM 29 JUNE THRU JULY 22 2000. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS AT APPROXIMATELY 35000 MILES, ON THE RIGHT FRONT. THE TIRE DEALER STATED THERE WAS A HOLE BUT HE COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE. THE SECOND FAILURE WAS ON 19 JULY AND THE LEFT FRONT TIRE BLEW AT APPROXIMATELY 60MPH. THE TIRE SHREDDED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED $94.03). I HAVE THE RECEIPT. THE THIRD WAS ON 22 JULY 2000 ON THE RIGHT REAR. THE TIRE WAS FLAT IN THE MORNING. I HAD IT REPAIRED AT THE SAME PLACE I BOUGHT THE OTHER ONE. I AM 59.5 YEARS OF AGE AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING AND OWNING CARS SINCE I WAS 16. I HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH TIRE PROBLEMS BEFORE AND I FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO BELIEVE THAT THESE TIRES SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. SEAT BELT CATCH RELEASED WHEN EXTREME SIDE IMPACT ON FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. *AK
WHILE CONSUMER WAS COMING BACK FROM THE AIRPORT SHE HEARD VIBRATING NOISES COMING FROM INSIDE OF VEHICLE . SHE GOT OUT OF VEHICLE TO CHECK THE TIRES. GOT BACK INTO VEHICLE, DECREASED SPEED, AND NOTICED MORE TREMBLING AND VIBRATING NOISES. SHE PROCEEDED TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER, AND NOTICED THAT TREAD CAME OFF PASSENGER'S TIRE. ALSO, THE TIRE TREAD DAMAGED METAL PART OF THE BUMPER. *AK

TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. I DON'T HAVE THE DOT NUMBERS AND TIRE SIZE SINCE I HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES WHEN I NOTICED THE DEFECT IN THE FIRST ONE. IT WASN'T WORTH TAKING ANY CHANCES. *AK( DOT NUMBER: UNKNOWN TIRE SIZE: 15 )
PLEASE ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION REGARDING THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT (P235/75R15) DOT SERIES "VNHL". I HAVE A SERIES OF SPLIT SIDEWALL CRACKS THAT IS APPROXIMATELY 1/2-INCH DOWN FROM THE TOP OF THE SIDEWALL THAT RUN THE ENTIRE CIRCUMFRANCE OF THE TIRE ON BOTH THE "INSIDE" AND "OUTSIDE" ON ALL FOUR (4) TIRE'S. I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE OFF-ROAD OR ABOVE 70-75MPH. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN MAINTAINED AT 32PSI COLD AND HAVE 28,000 MILES. THE TIRE TREAD IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE AND STILL HAS OVER 10/32" (5/16") OF TREAD REMAINING. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY FORD AS A LEASED VEHICLE AND IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. THIS IS NOT A DAILY DRIVER AND HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN FOR MORE THAN 450 MILES ONE WAY, OR FOR MORE THAN 5-HOURS AT ANYONE TIME. THE SERIES OF CRACKS WERE NOT PRESENT WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAS OCCURED OVER THE LAST YEAR. I FIRST NOTICED THESE CRACKS AFTER RETURNING FROM A TRIP TO COLUMBUS, OHIO LAST JUNE. THEY APPEAR TO HAVE LENGTHENED AND HAVE OPENNED UP SLIGHTLY OVER THE COURSE OF THE SUMMER. I HAD 32PSI IN THE TIRES PRIOR TO THIS TRIP. AGAIN, I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT THE DOT SERIES NUMBER IS "VNHL" AND THESE TIRES WERE MANUFACTURED IN CANADA. I URGE "ALL" CONCERNED TO PLEASE CONSIDER THE FACT THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT FROM THE DECANTUR, ILLINOIS PLANT, BUT FROM CANADA. THE CHANCE OF ONE INJURY OR FATALITY PER MILLION IS ONE TOO MANY AND THIS TIRE PROBLEM MAY BE RELATED TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN USING AN AWL TO PUNCTURE THE AIR BUBBLES OR JUST THE ILLINIOS PLANT. THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT SOMEWHERE IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND "ALL" FIRESTONE TIRES REGARLESS OF THE DOT SERIES NEEDS TO BE THOROUGHLY INSPECTED AND BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL THE PARTIES INVOLVED AND THAT INCLUDES ALL CURRENT OWNERS OF VEHICLES WITH FIRESTONE TIRES. WHILE DRIVING ABOUT ANY MPH AND WHEN MAKING A TURN COULD HEAR A CLICKING NOISE. CONSUMER SAID IT IS JUST LIKE RECALL 00 V 402 000 SWAY BAR. PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION. *AK
DRIVER EXPERIENCED BRIEF VIBRATION, TIRE TREAD SEPARATED AND WRAPPED AROUND AXLE CAUSING IT TO BREAK, VEHICLE ROLLED OVER 5 TIME, FRONT AND RIGHT REAR PASSENGER KILLED ON IMPACT, DRIVER SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURIES (1 MOS. HOSPITAL STAY), ONE PERSOND HAD MINOR INJURIES (BRUISING-SCRAPING), ONE PERSON HAD LACERATIONS AND NECK INJURY (FIRESTONE FIREHAWK SIZE 10.5X33.15). NLM
MY WIFE AND I WERE TRAVELING WEST ON THE INTERSTATE IN THE RIGHT LANE AT APP. 75 MPH WHEN WE HEARD A STRANGE SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR RIGHT TIRE. AT THAT MOMENT, I COULD FEEL THE BACK END OF THE VEHICLE SLIDING OUT FROM UNDER US TO THE RIGHT, TURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE LEFT TOWARD THE CENTER MEDIAN. WE WENT INTO THE MEDIAN AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL. AFTER ROLLING APP. 3 COMPLETE TIMES, WE ENDED UP FACING EAST IN THE RIGHT LANE OF EASTBOUND TRAFFIC - RIGHT SIDE UP. MIRACULOUSLY, NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT. MY WIFE ESCAPED WITH SEVERAL BUMPS AND BRUISES AND I HAD CUTS AND SCRAPES WHICH REQUIRED STITCHES. BOTH OF US WERE WEARING SEAT BELTS AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT, WHICH IS THE PRIMARY REASON WE WERE NOT MORE SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED. NO ONE WAS INJURED. TIRE WAS A WILDERNESS AT, NOT SURE IF TIRE WAS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT. OWNER THOUGHT TIRE WAS A RETREAD TIRE ,AND DID NOT CONTACT FIRESTONE. *AK
AFTER DRIVING CROSS COUNTRY CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE FRONT FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES WERE WORN ON THE INSIDE AND HAD THEM REPLACED, SOON AFTER THE LEFT REAR TIRE BLEWOUT WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. NLM
FRONT TWO TIRES HAD A LINE SEPARATED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TIRE. *AK TIRES SEPARATED IN THE MIDDLE OF BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT FRONT TIRES. *YH
WHILE TRAVELING DOWN A GRAVELED ROAD IN A REMOTE LOCATION IN NORTHWESTERN COLORADO THE LEFT REAR TIRE SUDDENLY WENT FLAT . SOME PICTURES OF THE TIRE BEING CHANGED WERE TAKEN BUT MAY NOT SHOW THE DAMAGED TIRE. I MANAGE A FLEET OF GOVERNMENT VEHICLES AND THOUGHT THE TIRES LOOKED AS IF THERE WAS A BREAK DOWN OF THE MATERIALS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF THE TIRE GOING FLAT, IT JUST BLEW AND ALMOST CAME OFF THE RIM IN A DISTANCE OF LESS THAN 10 FEET.( DOT NUMBER: VD TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

CONSUMER IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE RECALL ON THE OTHER FIRESTONE TIRES HAS INDICATED, AND IS VERY CONCERNED.*AK THE CRACK SLITS RUN THE ENTIRE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE TIRE. THE VNHL IPY 047 TIRES ARE MADE IN CANADA. *YH
AN UNUSUAL NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE LOCAL FORD DEALER STATED THAT ALL FOUR FIRESTONE TIRES WERE SEPARATING FROM THE RIM AT THE BEAD!!!! THEY ALSO STATED THAT I WAS FORTUNATE TO NOT HAVE HAD A CATISTROPHIC FAILURE AT INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON MY 360 MILE TRIP BACK TO MY HOME. WENT TO DEALER FOR OIL CHANGE, AND MECHANIC INDICATED THAT RIGHT FRONT TIRE WAS WORN & WEAK. WOULD HAVE TO EXCHANGE THE TIRE. PUT THE SPARE ON, WHICH THE MECHANIC INDICATE COULD BLOW ALSO. FIRESTONE, WILDERNESS, P235/75R15 WITH 35,000 MILES.*AK
HOT CIGARATTE LIGHTER EJECTED FULLY FROM THE ASSEMBLY. AFTER TESTING, OCCURS EVERY TIME .*AK
THE TREAD CAME OFF OF MY REAR LEFT TIRE WHEN I WAS EASTBOUND ON I-10. THE TREAD WRAPPED AROUND MY AXLE AND I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE CAR SPUN 180 DEGREES AND FINALLY CAME TO A HALT IN THE HIGHWAY MEDIAN. *AK( DOT NUMBER: )
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 70-80 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND HEARD A POPPING NOISE. RIGHT REAR TIRE EXPLODED, AND DRIVER LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND VEERED INTO THE GUARDRAIL. TIRE SEPARATED WITH STEEL BELTING CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO QUARTER PANEL. DRIVER IS MILITARY AND IS TRAINED TO INSPECT TIRES BEFORE DRIVING VEHICLE AS HE DRIVES ON U.S. AIR FORCE RUNWAYS ON A REGULAR BASIS. HE HAD INSPECTED TIRES APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES PRIOR TO INCIDENT. DRIVER MAINTAINED CONTROL OF VEHICLE THUS PREVENTING WORSE DAMAGE TO VEHICLE AND BODILY INJURY TO HIMSELF AND PASSENGER. THIRTEEN DAYS PRIOR, TO INCIDENT, CAR WAS SERVICED WITH NO VERBAL MENTION OF TIRE PROBLEM. SERVICE REPORT READS LEFT AND RIGHT REAR TIRES EACH HAD 7/32 TIRE TREAD AND WEAR PATTERN GOOD. TIRES PRESSURE AT 26 PSI. IN REVIEWING PURCHASE CONTRACT DETERMINED STANDARD EQUIPMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN P225/7OR155L BSW A/S TIRES.( DOT NUMBER: VDHLIPY436 TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )
I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING 65 MPH AT THE TIME WHEN I THOUGHT THERE WAS A FUNNY NOISE, THEN I STARTED TO SWERVE, BUT KEPT IT UNDER CONTROL, SLOWED DOWN AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN A DRIVEWAY. WHEN I HAD LEFT MY HOME THAT MORNING I HAD FELT A FUNNY VIBRATION, BUT HAD FIGURED IT WAS JUST A TIRE OUT OF BALANCE AND ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE FARTHER I DROVE THE WORSE THE VIBRATION GOT, TO THE POINT MY SEAT BELT WAS "ENGAGED" ALL THE TIME. I WAS DRESSED UP, GOING OUT OF TOWN TO A RECEPTION, THE TIRES WERE FAIRLY NEW WITH CORRECT AIR PRESSURE AND PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. I DO NOT ENJOY CHANGING TIRES, ESPECIALLY ON AN EXPLORER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN NICE CLOTHES IN THE MIST. I KEEP GOOD TIRES ON MY VEHICLES, IN FACT THESE WERE 6-PLY TIRES SINCE I LIVE IN THE COUNTRY. TWO GOOD SAMARATINS STOPPED AND CHANGED THE TIRE FOR ME (AND PUT ON MY SPARE WHICH IS NOW IN THE RECALL!) AND THEY SAID THE TIRES WERE WORN FUNNY AND THE TREAD WAS SPLIT. I NO LONGER HAVE THAT TIRE, BUT I HAVE THE ONE THAT WAS PURCHASED AT THE SAME TIME, IF ANYONE WOULD CARE TO LOOK AT IT. I REPLACED THOSE TIRES WITH 6-PLY KELLY TIRES AND PUT THENM ON THE FRONT. THREE WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED SOME STRANGE SPLITS IN THE SIDEWALLS OF MY REMAINING 2 BRIDESTONE TIRES, NOW ON THE BACK OF THE EXPLORER. I SHOWED THEM TO A MECHANIC WHO SAID I WOULD BE WISE TO GET THEM REPLACED. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THEM WITH 2 MORE 6-PLY KELLY TIRES. WHEN I RECIEVED MY RECALL NOTICE I NOTICED THAT, EVEN THOUGH THESE WERE BRIDGESTONES AND 6-PLY TIRES, THE SYMPTOMS OF THE TREAD FAILURE WERE THE SAME AND I DECIDED TO REPORT IT TO SOMEONE. THE REAR LEFT TIRE BLEW OUT WHILE I WAS TRAVELLING AT 60 MPH ON I-95 BETWEEN BALTIMORE AND WASINGTON D.C. LUCKILY I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE AND ONLY HIT THE GUARDRAIL INSTEAD OF OTHER VEHICLES. THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRE BLEW OUT AND CAUSED THE INS TO LOSS CONTROL. FIRESTONE RADIAL ATX WERE ALSO ON VEHICLE. V1 HAD A TIRE BLOW OUT. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FLOP OVER. CONSUMER FIRESTONE TIRES WERE FAULTY CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO WEAVE AND VIBRATE WHILE DRIVING, CONSUMER REPLACED THE TIRES AND REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT BUT WAS DENIED BECAUSE THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED FROM A COMPETITOR PRIOR TO AUG 9, 2000 (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT).
OUR CAR ROLLED OVER AFTER BEING STRUCK IN THE RIGHT REAR , BOTH TIRES ON DRIVER SIDE SEPERATED FROM RIMS. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO ROLL OVER. OTHER 2 TIRES WHILE HAVING DEBRIS IN BEAD AREAS DID NOT SEPERATE FROM RIM( DOT NUMBER: UNK TIRE SIZE: P23575R15 )
CONSUMERS FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT (P235/75R15 DOT VDHL) TIRES WERE DETERIOARTING ON THE SIDES NEAR THE TREAD AND CONSUMER REPLACED THEM PRIOR TO RECALL NOTICE, CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE NOISE THE TIRES MADE AND STEERING WHEN BRAKING, AFTER CONSUMER REPLACED THE TIRE THE PROBLEM STOPPED, CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. THE RIGHT REAR TIRE TREAD CAME OFF THE TIRE (FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT) CAUSING THE DRIVER TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT OVERTURNED TWO AND A HALF TIMES. THE DRIVER AND TWO PASSENGER CRAWLED OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED FOR EMERGENCY PERSONNEL. NLM
