LEFT SIDE TENSIONER HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR SAME REASON THAT RIGHT SIDE FAILED. IT IS THE SAME PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AND FAILED FOR THE SAME REASONS YET IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET. *AK
WHILE DRIVING ENGINE WOULD STALL. WHILE AT AN INTERSECTION ON A SIX LANE ROAD, IN MIDDLE LANE, VEHICLE STALLED. FELT THIS WAS DANGEROUS BECAUSE CONSUMER COULD HAVE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER WHEN REAR TIMING CHAIN JUMPED TIME, TIMING CHAIN BROKE. DEALER SAID ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
THESE TIRES WERE NOT UNDER THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURES RECALL, HOWEVER, I RECENTLY HAD THE TIRES INSPECTED BY A FIRESTONE REPRESENTATIVE BECAUSE OF SOME CONCERNS WE HAD WITH THE INTEGRETY OF THE TIRES. FIRESTONE ACKNOWLEGED THAT ALL FOUR OF MY TIRES ARE SEPERATING WHERE THE TREAD IS GLUED TO THE BODY OF THE TIRE, JUST WHERE THESE TIRES ARE COMING APART AND KILLING PEOPLE. FIRESTONE WILL NOT REPLACE THE TIRES EVEN AFTER ADMITING THAT THEY ARE DEFECTIVE. THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME OVER 300 DOLLARS TO REPLACE THEM. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG HERE AND I NEED SOME HELP. AFTER ARRIVING HOME SPARE TIRE HAD FALLEN OUT OF VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP & WAS INFORMED BY SERVICE MANAGER THAT CABLE ATTACHMENT FOR SPARE TIRE HAD BROKEN. CAN BE REPAIRED. *AK

I SPOKE WITH 3 OTHER MOTHERS THAT HAVE 1998 EXPLORER AND ON EACH THE MIDDLE SEAT BELT WON'T WORK, I HAVE THREE LITTLE GRANDCHILDREN, AND BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM I COULD NOT TAKE ALL THREE ANYWHERE. THEY COULD NOT SEAT UP FRONT. WHY DO 4 OUT OF 4 1998 EXPLORERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM? AT FIRST I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST ORDER A NEW ONE, BUT I DIDN'T HAVE THE $80.00 FOR PART AND INSTALLATION. UPON TALKING TO THESE OTHER EXPLORER OWNERS I REALLY FELT THAT INFERIOR BELT BUCKLES WERE USED. MY DAD WAS A FORD MAN AND WE WERE FORD PEOPLE. PLEASE HELP. *AK
CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 75MPH ON HIGHWAY AND CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET ON 75. MPH. WAS CLIMBING UP A HILL, AND CRUISE CONTROL CONTINUED TO SPEED UP.CONSUMER APPLIED BRAKES AND VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SPEED UP. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF PROBLEM. THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED. *AK
ON 11-7, VEHICLE WAS MAKING S-LIKE MOVEMENTS, CONSUMER HAD DIFFICULTY KEEPING VEHICLE IN THE LANE, AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS, THE PROBLEMS CEASED, HOWEVER THE FOLLOWING DAY THE SAME PROBLEMS OCCURRED AND CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE STEERING WHEEL BEING TURNED, CONSUMER COLLIDED TWICE WITH THE GUARDRAIL. *SLC

THERE WAS A MASSIVE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE RESULTING IN FUEL ODOR, CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. NLM
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 40 MPH ENGINE LOCKED UP. EXPLORER WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN TO DEALERSHIP. TIMING CHAIN WAS REPLACED AT OWNER'S EXPENSE BECAUSE IT WAS STRETCHED AND SLIPPED OFF. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF SERVICE BULLETIN. *AK
WHEN THE FIRESTONE TIRE RECALL WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED, I CHECKED THE TIRES ON MY 1998 FORD EXPLORER. THE DOT NUMBERS AND SIZE WERE NOT AMONG THOSE LISTED IN THE RECALL, THE TIRES SEEMED TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION SO I WASN'T OVERLY CONCERNED. I HAVE ALWAYS MAINTAINED MY VEHICLES METICULOUSLY, INCLUDING THE TIRES.AIR PRESSURE IS CHECKED WEEKLY AND KEPT AT 30 PSI AS INSTRUCTED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL, AND ROTATED AT EVERY OTHER OIL CHANGE (6000 MI ).WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, I NOTICED A SLIGHT HAIRLINE CRACK ON THE SIDEWALL ABOUT 3/4 OF AN INCH DOWN FROM THE TREAD AREA. THIS CRACK DID NOT GO COMPLETELY AROUND THE TIRE AT THIS TIME AND WAS EVIDENT ON ONLY TWO TIRES. I HAVE KEPT A CLOSE EYE ON THEM EVER SINCE. THIS PAST WEEKEND I NOTICED IT ON ALL FOUR TIRES, NEARLY COMPLETELY AROUND ON TWO OF THEM. THIS CRACK LOOKS LIKE THE EARLY STAGES OF TREAD SEPARATION,AND HAS OUR FAMILY AFRAID TO DRIVE OUR EXPLORER ANY FURTHER THAN AROUND TOWN AT CITY SPEEDS. THREAD SEPARATION ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THESE 16" TIRES ARE AT THE DEALERSHIP NOW. MOON TWP. FORD IMMEDIATELY REPLACED THESE TIRES WHEN I TOOK IT IN THIS AFTERNOON. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE TO RECALL THE 16" TIRES AS WELL. THIS IS THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A HOT STATE. ANOTHER GENTLEMAN HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS FORD EXPLORER AND HIS 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING. SHE DID LOSE A TIRE ON THE HIGHWAY IN OUR AREA JUST 5 WEEKS AGO AND IT WAS ALSO THE SAME TIRE I AM ADVISING YOU ABOUT. PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE MORE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR LIVE. THIS COUNTRY IS ALMOST IN A PANIC ABOUT THESE TIRES. VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER INCLUDING POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AT 70 MPH ON 4 LANE INTERSTATE 85/40 WITHOUT WARNING. DEALERSHIP STATED THE PASSENGER'S FOOT UNKNOWINGLY DISCONNECTED WIRING HARNESS CAUSUNG ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY BEEN SERVICED BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP. THE WIRING HARNESS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN IN THE POSITION IN WHICH IT COULD BE DISCONNECTED BY THE PASSENGER.
BOTH REAR TIRES SHOW EARLY SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION WITH CRACKING AT TREAD/TIRE BODY BOND (DOT NUMBER: W2HL TIRESIZE: P235/75R15)
PE00 020; CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO FIRESTONE TO GET TIRES INSPECTED. AND ATTENDANT NOTICED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES HAD BUBBLES, AND STEEL COIL WAS STICKING OUT ON THE EDGE OF THE TIRES. THERE WAS NO INJURIES. *AK
IN EXAMINING THE TIRES FOR THE RECALL, I NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD A CRACK ALL AROUND THE SIDEWALL JUST ABOUT 1 INCH BELOW THE TREAD. EVEN THOUGH MY TIRES WERE NOT A PART OF THE RECALL BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT MANUFACTURED AT DECATUR, I WENT TO THE FIRESTONE DEALER AND GOT THE TIRE REPLACED. I HAD TO PAY A PRO-RATED COST FOR THE TIRE BASED ON ITS TREAD WEAR. I BELIEVE THAT THIS TREAD SEPARATION PROBLEM MAY EXTEND TO MORE THAN JUST THE RECALLED TIRES. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN FOR REPAIR OF THE SAME PROBLEM, 4 TIMES IN THE PAST YEAR. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED THE CONSUMER COMPLAINT CENTER AT FORD MOTOR CO. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS UP TO THE REGIONAL REP. TO MAKE A DECISION ON THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR ON 10/02/2000, THE ONLY REPAIR THEY MADE WAS ADDING SOUND PROOFER AND BOLTS. ARE THEY JUST TRYING TO HIDE THE PROBLEM? AND WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT, IF I'M ON THE ROAD WITH THIS VEHICLE, AND SOMETHING DOES GO WRONG WITH THE STEERING, WHERE WILL I BE. THE DEALERSHIP IS WANTING TO GET ME OUT OF THIS VEHICLE BEFORE SOMETHING DOES HAPPEN. BUT FORD IS NOT WANTING TO TAKE FULL RESPONSIBLITY FOR THE PROBLEMS. ALSO THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD THE TENSIONER PULLY REPLACED TWICE. WHICH MEANS THE MOTOR IS BEING OPENED TO DO THIS. HOW MANY MORE PROBLEMS DO I NEED TO GO THROUGH BEFORE SOMEONE WILL UNDERSTAND THAT THIS VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE TAKEN OFF THE ROAD, BEFORE SOMETHING OR SOMEONE GETS HURT OR KILLED IN THE PROCESS. ALL THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP, AND CAN BE REVIEWED THROUGH THE DATABASE. I NEED YOUR HELP IN RESOLVING THIS ISSUE.

PE00-020, ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON 1998, FORD, EXPLORER WITH 32000 MILES, P25570R16, DOT WD, CONSUMER WENT TO TIRE SHOP TO GET TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED. WHEN TIRE TECHNICIAN TOOK OFF TIRES HE NOTICED THE BEGINNING OF TREAD SEPARATION , AND STRESS FRACTURES. TOLD CONSUMER TO HAVE THEM REPLACED.*AK

THIS VEHICLE HAS REPEATED STALLING PROBLEMS (ONLY ACCELERATING FROM A STOP OR FROM LOW SPEEDS). THIS TROUBLE HAS BEEN REPORTED FOUR TIMES TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ALWAYS SAY NOTHING IS WRONG. ON SEPT 21 MY WIFE WAS ALMOST HIT IN THE PASSENGERS SIDE WHILE PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO STALLED ONCE AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH A SERVICE TECH. INSIDE. THEY IMMEDIATELY SEARCHED FOR TROUBLE CODES AND FOUND NONE. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT OCCUR OFTEN BUT IT OCCURS WHEN YOU HAVE TO ACCELERATE FROM A STOP OR INTO TRAFFIC. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELL-BEING OF MY FAMILY AND THE DEALERSHIP IS NOT MAKING ANY REASONABLE OFFERS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. ANY RESPONSE WOULD BE APPRECIATED. *AK
ALL 4 TIRES BEGAN TO SHOW TREAD SEPARATION ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TIRE ON BOTH THE INSIDE AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO 2 DIFFERENT FORD DEALERSHIPS, INCLUDING THE ONE WHERE I BOUGHT MY EXPLORER, AND BOTH RECOGNIZED THE BREAK DOWN OF THE TIRES BUT STATED THAT IT WAS A FIRESTONE PROBLEM AS THE TIRE ID NUMBER WAS NOT ON THEIR RECALL LIST. FORD SENT ME BACK OUT ON THE HIGHWAY WITH BAD TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FIRESTONE WHICH WOULD ONLY PRORATE A REPLACEMENT WHICH WAS NOT ADEQUATE. THUS I ELECTED TO REPLACE THE TIRES WITH MICHELINS. I HAVE PHOTOGRAPHED THE TIRES AND HAVE KEPT THE TIRES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. IT APPEARS THAT THE TIRES BROKE DOWN DUE TO THE FACT THAT FORD USED THE LOW PRESSURE OF 26 PSI. IN THE TIRES TO PREVENT ROLLOVER. THIS LOW PRESSURE CAUSED ALL 4 TIRES TO BREAK DOWN AT THE SAME TIME. IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE BREAK DOWN WAS FOUND BEFORE COMPLETE SEPARATION OCCURED CAUSING A FATAL ACCIDENT. THE FIRESTONE DEALER CONFIRMED TO ME THAT THE LOW PRESSURE IN THE TIRES WAS THE CAUSE FOR THE BREAK DOWN AND THUS WAS NOT FIRESTONE'S PROBLEM. AS REPORTED ON THE NEWS THIS AM 10-9-00 GOODYEAR TIRES ON FORD EXPLORERS ALSO HAVE HAD TREAD SEPARATION PROBABLY CAUSED BY THE LOW PRESSURE REQUIRED BY THE FORD MOTOR CO. TO PREVENT ROLLOVER OF THE EXPLORER.
