PASSENGER FRONT SAFETY BELT LOCKING UP AND TIGHTENING. PASSENGER MUST REMOVE BELT AND WAIT FOR MECHANISM TO RETURN TO NORMAL. BELT LOCKS UP 85% OF TIME EVEN AFTER DISENGAGING AND REBUCKLING. DEALER NOTIFIED - STILL UNDER WARRANTY FOR REPAIR. REPAIR ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE. *AK
VEHICLE CRASHED INTO ROCK WALL OF BUILDING AFTER UNSCHEDULED ACCELERATION AS WE WERE PARKING IT. BARELY ROLLING, FOOT ON BRAKE, VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN, JUMPED 6" CURBING, ENGINE REVVING, WENT DOWN HILL, UNDER LOW I-BEAM OF ROOF AND CRASHED INTO ROCK WALL OF CITY HALL. IT BUCKLED WALL, SPLIT SHEET ROCK IN INTERIOR. ALTHOUGH WE SURVIVED THE INCIDENT, THE ROOF WAS RIPPED OPEN BY THE I-BEAM AND SUNROOF GLASS FILLED VEHICLE. WE NARROWLY ESCAPED WITH OUR LIVES. VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVEABLE AFTER ACCIDENT. POLICE REPORT EXONERATED US OF ANY BLAME. FIRST INCIDENT WITH VEHICLE. *AK
ON TWO OCCASIONS VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION, ONE INCIDENT RESULTED IN VEHICLE CRASHING INTO ROCK BUILDING. *YC
CONSUMER WAS PULLING INTO PARKING LOT AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED, JUMPED A CURVE DOWN GRASSY DECLINE AND HIT CITY HALL'S WALL. *AK
VEHICLE EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF THE RECALL COMPONENT PRIOR TO RECALL NOTICE CAUSING UNWANTED ACCELERATION. (99V-062) MJS
FIRESTONE: INSURED SEVERELY INJURED IN SINGLE VEHICLE ROLL-OVER CRASH. WILDERNESS TIRES INVOLVED. WITNESS (TRUCK DRIVER) INDICATED HE THOUGHT TIRE BLEW. EVIDENCE AT SCENE CLEARLY INDICATED THAT THE LEFT REAR TIRE WAS FLAT PRIOR TO THIS LOSS-THAT IT BLEW OUT FROM THE SIDEWALL. SIDEWALL BLOW OUT NO TREAD SEPARTION WILDERNESS AT TIRES SHOW EVEN WEAR PATTERN. SIZE UNKNOWN. (CLAIM# 22-V083-768) *MW
VEHICLE HAD A PINHOLE IN THE CORNER OF WINDSHIELD THROUGH WHICH DEBRIS ENTERED, AND CAUSED WINDSHIELD TO CRACK. THIS MAY HAVE RESULTED IN INJURIES. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
VERY LOUD, INTERMITTENT, SQUEALING FROM FRONT END. DEALER FIRST STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE DUST SEALS/BOOTS, BUT ACCORDING TO OTHER SHOP, THERE AREN'T ANY. NEXT THEY SAID IT WAS THE FRONT BRAKES: THEY ONLY HAD 5K MILES OF USE LEFT, AND THE ROTORS WERE TOO WORN. I HAD NEW ROTORS AND PADS INSTALLED, BUT THE SQUEAL IS STILL THERE. IT OCCURS WITH BRAKES APPLIED OR NOT, WITH ENGINE ON OR OFF(JUST ROLLING DOWN A HILL), BUT ONLY WHEN VEHICLE IS MOVING. DOES NOT CHANGE WHEN TURNING. BACK SEAT BELT CONTINUES TO TWIST, CAUSING SEABELT TO GET STUCK INSIDE SEAT BELT MECHANISM. REPLACING THE SEAT BELT MECHANISM WILL ULTIMATELY RESULT IN SAME PROBLEM DUE TO DESIGN FAILURE. APPARENTLY, PLASTIC HOLDER TOO LARGE WHICH ALLOWS SEAT BELT TO TWIST. *AK
ONGOING PROBLEM WITH ABS SYSTEM; WHENEVER BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION/SUDDEN STOP OR SLAMMING ON BRAKE, IT CAUSES VEHICLE TO SKID AND FISHTAIL TO THE RIGHT. DEALER NOTIFED AND INFORMED CONSUMERTHAT NOTHING COULD BE FOUND. CAN NHTSA PROVIDE INFORMATION WEATHER THIS IS NORMAL OR NOT. *AK
WE EXPERIENCED AN UNEXPLAINED BLOW OUT OF OUR RIGHT REAR TIRE DRIVING DOWN BERTHOUD PASS IN THE MOUNTAINS OF COLORADO. FIRESTONE REPLACED THE TIRE AT NO CHARGE. THEY FOUND NO EXPLAINATION FOR THE BLOWOUT. THE WEATHER WAS COLD, COLORADO IN MARCH, AT A HIGH ELEVATION. HEAT WAS NOT A FACTOR. THE TIRES HAD LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON THEM. WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE WE DID NOT LOSE CONTROL AND PLUMMET OFF OF THE MOUNTAIN. THIS PROBLEM IS NOT JUST OCCURRING IN WARM SOUTHERN STATES.( DOT NUMBER: )
REAR TIRE EXPLODED CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL AND VEHICLE ROLLED THREE TIMES, TOTALLED.
WHILE DRIVING AT 55MPH THE LEFT REAR TIRE BLEW APART. THE VEHICLE SWERVED IN TRAFFIC AND I HAD DIFFICULTY CONTROLLING IT IN SLOWING DOWN TO A STOP. INITIALLY I THOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS GOING TO ROLL OVER. THE OUTER TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE TIRE AND WAS MOSTLY IN TACT. THE REST OF THE TIRE WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED. AFTER HAVING THE TIRE CHANGED I TOOK THE TIRE TO THE FIRESTONE STORE IN ARLINGTON, TX (LITTLE ROAD) AND THEY REPLACED THE TIRE AT NO CHARGE. THERE WAS SOME DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL RIM. IF FIRESTONE IS GOING TO REPLACE THESE TIRES THEY SHOULD NOT FORGET TO CHANGE OUT THE SPARE WHICH IS THE SAME TIRE ON THE FORD EXPLORER.( DOT NUMBER: ???? TIRE SIZE: P23575R15 )
THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY IN A 35 MPH ACCIDENT
THROTTLE STICKS IN IDLE POSITION FREQUENTLY. MOST OFTEN HAPPEN WHEN BACKING OUT OF PARKING SPOT, BUT CAN OCCUR AT ANY TIME. THROTTLE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED TWICE AND REPARIED TWICE BY 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS, BUT THE REPLACEMENTS PERFORM AS POORLY AS THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT.
PROBLEM IS AN ALMOST CONSTANT GRINDING NOISE THAT DEALER SAYS CANNOT BE REPAIRED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAS NO PERMENANT FIX. REFER TO FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 12328.12329. DEALER REFUSED TO DOCUMENT THAT PROBLEM WAS NOT A POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE AND THAT THERE WOULD NOT BE A FAILURE OF THE DRIVE TRAIN SYSTEM, OR THAT THE WHEELS WOULD NOT FALL OFF. DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT MGR. FURTHER STATED THAT THERE WERE HUNDREDS AND PERHAPS THOUSANDS OF CARS WITH THE SAME DEFECT. MY OBSERVATION OF THIS PROBLEM IS THAT THERE IS A HIGH PITCHED GRINDING OR SQUEALING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THIS SOUND IS A METAL ON METAL RUBBING NOISE, WHICH COULD CAUSE FRICTIION, HEAT AND PERHAPS PARTS FAILURE THAT COULD CAUSE POTENTIAL FAILURE OF THE DRIVE TRAIN SYSTEM.
RECALL WORK NOT ABLE TO BE DONE DUE TO LACK OF PARTS (99V-062). MJS
BRAKING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING NO BRAKING ABILITY, WHICH MAY RESULTIN A CRASH. BEEN TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, DELAER CANNOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
BRAKE PEDAL AND SWITCH, AUTO DOOR LOCK AND BRAKE LIGHTS.
THIS IS A VERY DISTINCT TAPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THAT CAN BE HEARD AT ALL TIMES AND GETS LOUDER AS YOU DRIVE THE CAR. WE ARE AFRAID THAT THIS IS A LIFTER AND OUR ENGINE IS GOING TO BLOW UP WHILE WE ARE DRIVING. THE SERVICE SHOP DENIES EVEN HEARING THIS TAPPING NOISE BUT WHEN WE WENT TO ARBRITRATION 5 PEOPLE , WHOM ARE NOT MECHANICS ALL HEARD AND VERIFIED THAT THIS NOISE IS PRESENT. THE SERVICE SHOP WILL NOT EVEN SAY THEY HEAR THIS NOISE, ALONE FIX IT FOR US. WE WANT TO KNOW HOW TO GET THIS FIXED, WE HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP 22 DAYS.
ALTHOUGH THIS VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT YET, I AM AFRAID THAT IT WILL SOONER OR LATER DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. SINCE I HAVE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE, IT HAS STUMBED/HESITATED (FOR 1 -2 SECONDS) WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A DEAD STOP. SO FAR, THIS PROBLEM HAS ONLY OCCURRED WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN, FROM A DEAD STOP, IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IF IT WAS ONLY A SPLIT SECOND THING, IT WOULD NOT BE SO BAD, BUT IT TAKES A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE I HAVE POWER AGAIN. SINCE IT IS AN INTERMITTENT THING THAT ONLY OCCURS ONCE EVERY 3-4 MONTHS, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY PROBLEM WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT IN. *AK
GAS PEDAL STICKS AFTER REMOVING YOUR FOOT. YOU MUST EXERT EXTRA PRESSURE ON PEDAL TO BREAK IT LOOSE BEFORE ACCELERATING. DOES NOT SEEM TO STICK WHILE DRIVING. DEALER HAD ALREADY REPLACED DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY 3 TIMES SO FAR - I AM CURRENTLY ON MY FOURTH THROTTLE BODY PART INSIDE THE FIRST 15 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP. CURRENTLY, IT NEEDS REPLACING AGAIN. THE DEALER INDICATED THEY REPLACED IT WITH THE NEW REDESIGNED PART ON THE LAST REPAIR, BUT IT DID NOT SEEM TO HELP. AFTER THE PART IS REPLACED, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY FOR A FEW MONTHS, AND THEN RETURNS.
POWER SEAT. ROCKED BACK AND FORTH AND GOT WORSE. DEALER REPLACED. SEAT STARTED TO GET LOOSE AGAIN AND DEALER REPLACED IT AGAIN. ALSO SEAT BELT WAS NOT RETRACTING BACK IN. DEALER REPLACED. ADDITIONAL DEFECT NOT NOTED WAS THE 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION HAVING TO BE REBUILT AT 22,868 MILES. WOULD BE GLAD TO FILL OUT ADDITIONAL FORM OR PROVIDE SERVICE RECORDS ETC. IF NEEDED. LEFT FRONT SUSPENSION BOLT MISSING / FELL OFF, CAUSING SUSPENSION TO COLLAPSE, DAMAGING THE SPINDLE / BRAKE HOSE / WHEEL SENSOR, THE WHEEL RIM AND TIRE.

THE RIGHT REAR TIRE WENT FLAT WHILE GOING UP THE HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND SHE WAS FORCED TO GO UP AND OVER THE BRIDGE TO A SAFE PLACE TO CHANGE THE FLAT TIRE. AS A RESULT OF ROLLING ON THE FLAT TIRE, THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE WAS RUINED. WE BOUGHT A NEW TIRE FROM FIRESTONE TO REPLACE THE DAMAGED FLAT TIRE. THE NEW TIRE IS ONE THAT IS INVOLVED IN THE RECALL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT BY FIRESTONE.( DOT NUMBER: VNHL328 TIRE SIZE: 235/75/R15 )
CONSUMER WAS IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION WITH ANOTHER CAR AND AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *AK
POWER LOCKS MALFUNCTIONING; ONCE UNLOCKED AND CONSUMER GETS OUT GO TO REAR OF PASSENGER SIDE TO TAKE INFANT OUT OF CSS, THE DOORS HAVE LOCKED AUTOMATICALLY. IT TOOK SIX TRIES BEFORE SHE COULD GET TO THE DOOR. *AK
ENGINE STALLED DURING LEFT TURN AT INTERSECTION. ALL THREE TIMES THAT THIS HAS OCCURED HAS BEEN UP STARTING FROM A COMPLETE STOP, AND UNDER MODERATE TO HEAVY ACCELERATION. TWO OF THE INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURED DURING LEFT TURNS, WHILE THE OTHER OCCURED GOING STRAIGHT. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED IN ACCORDANCE WITH FORD'S RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.
SERIOUS POWER STEERING LEAKAGE. TAKEN TO DEALER TWICE, AND TOLD IT'S BEEN REPAIRED - STILL UNRESOLVED. ALSO CONTINUAL SQUEAKING IN RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. DEALER STATES CANNOT REPAIR. *AK
3 PROBLEMS; #1. GAS PEDAL STICKS. DEALER SAYS NO PROBLEM, BUT KEEPS PUTTING LUBE ON LINKAGE. #2 LEFT FRONT BEARING REPLACED TWICE DUE TO SQEALING AT LOW SPEED, OTHER TIMES THEY LUBED RUBBER BOOT. #3 REAR HATCH WHEN COLD,LIFTS FAIL, HIT HEAD AND UPPER BACK.
THE CONSUMER STATE'S THE REAR SEAT BELT'S ARE BROKEN AND THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM.
TIRE SPLIT AT SIDEWALL AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT... ONLY 1,800 MILES ON TIRE. NO APPARENT REASON FOR SPLIT. FIRESTONE TOLD ME IT WAS CAUSED BY A ROAD HAZARD. THE CAR WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN. I WALKED OUT TO GO TO WORK AND HAD A SPLIT TIRE. IT HAPPENED OVER NIGHT. I HAD TO REPLACE ENTIRE TIRE AT MY COST. (DOT NUMBER: ? TIRESIZE: P255/70R16)
THERE WILL BE RESISTANCE BEHIND THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN TRYING TO STOP VEHICLE. THIS HAS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY SIX TIMES. DEALERSHIP COULD NOT DETERMINE CAUSE FOR THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL NFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS.*AK
UNSATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE FROM FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT P235/75R15 (SUV) TIRES. AFTER ROUTINE SERVICE AND (SECOND) TIRE ROTATION/BALANCE AT 12,000 MILES, I NOTICED MY VEHICLE "PULLING" TO THE RIGHT WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY. I RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE SERVICING DEALER (KEARNY MESA FORD, SAN DIEGO CA), AND ASKED THEM TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THEY WERE UNABLE TO ROTATE THE TIRES AND STILL HAVE THEM BALANCED WITHIN SPECIFICATION. CONSEQUENTLY, THE TIRES WERE RETURNED TO THEIR ORIGINAL POSITIONS ON THE VEHICLE. THE EXPLANATION GIVEN TO ME WAS THAT THERE WAS "LIKELY A LOOSE BELT WITHIN ONE OF THE TIRES PREVENTING IT FROM BALANCING CORRECTLY, BUT SINCE THE VEHICLE DIDN'T SEEM TO "PULL" WHEN THIS TIRE WAS MOUNTED ON THE REAR, I SHOULD JUST LEAVE IT THERE AND NOT ROTATE MY TIRES IN THE FUTURE." WHEN I INQUIRED ABOUT WARRANTY AND/OR REPLACEMENT, I WAS INFORMED THAT BECAUSE THE TIRES HAD 12,000 MILES ACCRUED, THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO. AS A RESULT OF NOT ROTATING MY TIRES (...SOMETHING I NORMALLY DO AS SCHEDULED), MY TIRES HAVE WORN IRREGULARLY AND I BELIEVE HAVE WORN OUT PREMATURELY (...IN THIS CASE, APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES; HOWEVER I GENERALLY GET MUCH GREATER TIRE LIFE DUE TO THE "HIGHWAY" DRIVING I DO AND PROPER TIRE MAINTENANCE). THIS IS THE SECOND TIME , THAT L HAVE TOLD THIS DEPARTMENT ABOUT THIS BRAKE PROBLEM WITH MY 98 FORD EXPLORER . MY FIRST COMPLAINT WAS SOME TIME IN JULY OF THIS YEAR . THE DEALER HAS CUT THE FRONT ROTORS ONCE AT 9000MILES ALL HIGHWAY DRIVING AND RPLACED THE ROTORS AT 18000 . THE ABS SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING THE WAY IT SHOULD , L JUST EXPERIENCED THIS ON THE 20TH OF THIS MONTH ,IN PORTLAND ME . AFTER YOU HAVE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND ARE STITTING FOR AWHILE WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED AND THEN YOU RELEASE THE BRAKES AND THEN IF YOU HAVE TO STOP REAL QUICKLY THE ABS SYSTEM WILL NOT FUNCTION THE WAY IT SHOULD . WHAT YOU END UP WITH IS THAT YOU DO'NT HAVE ANY BRAKES AT ALL AND YOU CRASH .
THE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY STICKS. WHEN I PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR IT APPEARS STUCK. I MUST PRESS HARDER THAN NECESSARY TO RELEASE THE THROTTLE SO VEHICLE WILL RESPOND. THIS IS MY THIRD COMPLAINT AND SECOND THROTTLE. TED RUSSELL FORD IN KNOXVILLE AND DON SMITH FORD IN GREENEVILLE HAVE BEEN VERY COOPERATIVE AND RESPONDED TO MY COMPLAINTS. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A REOCCURRING PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN OF THE PART. IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS THIS CONDITION COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ASSURANCE THAT THE MOST RECENT REPAIR HAS CORRECTED THE STICKING THROTTLE, AND I WILL NOT EXPERIENCE IT AGAIN. *AK
SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGE 12328 - SOME 1998/1999 EXPLORER/MOUNTAINEER 4X4 VEHICHLES MAY EXHIBIT A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL/WHISTLE TYPE NOISE FROM THE FRONT END AT SPEEDS FROM 10MPH TO 40MPH. THIS NOISE MAY BE COMING FROM THE FRONT HALFSHAFT EXCLUDER SEALS(3K070) AS THEY ROTATE AGAINST THE INNER HUBS. IF A VEHICLE COMES IN FOR THIS CONCERN, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE; 1. PERFORM THE FRONT HALF SHAFT REMOVAL PROCEDURE PER SECTION 205-04-6 THROUGH 205-04-8 OF THE 1999 EXPLORER/MOUNTAINEER WORKSHOP MANUAL. 2. CLEAN THE EXTENDED LIP OF THE FRONT WHEEL EXCLUDER SEALS(3K070), THE INNER SURFACE OF THE KNUCKLE(3K185/3K186) IN WHICH THE WHEELS RIDE AGAINST THE AXLE SHAFT OIL SEALS(3254). 3. SPREAD APPROXIMATELY 1/8" THICK BEAD OF HIGH TEMP WHEEL BEARING GREESE(PART #E8TZ-19590-A) ONTO THE SEAL LIPS&SURFACES THEY CONTACT. 4. PERFORM THE FRONT HALFSHAFT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE PER SECTION 205-04-8 OF THE 1999 EXPLORER/MOUNTAINEER WORKSHOP MANUAL. VERIFY THAT THE NOISE IS NO LONGER PRESENT. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE PROVIDED WHEN AVAILABLE. ENGINEERING IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THIS ISSUE. NOTE: DO NOT REPLACE THE SEALS UNLESS THEY ARE DAMAGED.
WITH LESS THAN 700 MILES ON THE SUV, A STONE FROM OUR DRIVEWAY PUNCTURED THE TIRE AND CAUSE IT TO GO FLAT. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND A FIRESTONE DEALER ALSO. THERE WAS NO WARRANTY FOR THE TIRES. SEVERAL TIMES I HAVE GONE TO TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS AND THEY WON'T COME ON. I HAVE TO TURN THE BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THEY WILL COME ON. AFTER MY AUTO HAS SET OVERNIGHT AND I START IT, IT IDLES VERY ROUGH FOR A FEW MINUTES. THE GAS PEDAL HAS BEEN STICKING FOR QUITE A FEW MONTHS. ONLY WHEN YOU INITIALLY PUSH ON THE GAS TO GO.
