TIRES SHOW STRESS CRACK WHERE THE BELT IS ATTACHED TO CASSION, TIRE HAVE DEVELOPED A VIBRATION AT 45 MPH TO 70 MPH, I HAVE REMOVED ALL 5 TIRES FROM VEHICLE AND REPLACED THEM WITH MICHLEN TIRES, SINCE I LIVE IN GA, THE VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR OUR AREA WAS NOT SCHEDULE TILL OCTOBER, SO IN THE NAME OF SAFEY I RELPLACE THEM WITH NO ASSISTANCE FROM FIRESTONE.THE DOT NUMBER INDICATES THESE TIRE WERE NOT FROM FIRESTONE'S DECATUR IL PLANT, BUT I HAVE 5 TIRES(DOT W2HL 128) THAT HAVE A PROBLEM. *AK( DOT NUMBER: W2HL128 TIRE SIZE: 235/75R15 )
ALL (4) TIRES HAVE CRACKS IN TREAD. FIRESTONE DEALER INSPECTED, SAID TO KEEP EYE ON THEM, BUT NOT PART OF RECALL. DON'T FEEL GOOD ABOUT DRIVING SINCE SMALLER SIZE PART OF RECALL. ALL SIZES SHOULD BE PART OF THIS RECALL, SAME DESIGN, MANUFACTURING, RUBBER COMPOUND.( DOT NUMBER: )
IN MAY I WAS TAKING MY SON TO HAMPTON, SC. I HAD BEEN ON A SECONDARY ROAD FOR LESS THEN FIVE MILES WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND SUBSEQUENT DIFFICULTY MANEUVERING MY SUV. LUCKILY DRIVER'S ED FROM 26 YEARS AGO CLICKED IN AND I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET MY VEHICLE OFF TO THE SIDE. AS MY SON AND I REMOVED THE SPARE AND READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL, AN OFF DUTY SC PATROLMAN STOPPED TO HELP CHANGE THE TIRE. EVERYONE WHO SAW IT REMARKED THAT IT LOOKED DIFFERENT THAN THE USUAL "BLOW-OUT" IT LOOKED LIKE IT EXPLODED. I HAD THE TWO TIRES REPLACED WITH MICHELIN TIRES ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN I CAN GET THE OTHERS REPLACED. DESPITE THE HOT CLIMATE IN COASTAL SC, MY TIRES WILL BE RECALLED LAST AND I'VE ALREADY HAD ONE EXPLODING TIRE! THE INTERMITTENT HESITATION PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED UNDER CONDITIONS THAT HAVE POSED SAFETY RISKS TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICING DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN UNABLE TO REPAIR DUE TO THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF THE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH THERE IS A MANUFACTURER'S TECHNICAL BULLETIN FOR THIS CONDITION. ALL CONFIDENCE IN THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN LOST AT THIS POINT. ALSO, I HAVE HEARD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNERS WHILE WAITING AT THE DEALERSHIP. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PROBLEM MAY BE WIDESPREAD. *AK
I HAVE SURFACE CRACKS GOING ALL THE WAY AROUND MY TIRES ON THE SIDE WALLS, WHERE THE TREAD MEETS THE REST OF THE TIRE. I HAD MY TIRES INSPECTED AT THE FIRESTONE IN DUNCANVILLE TX AND THE MANAGER SAID THAT THEY APPEARED TO BE SURFACE CRACKS AT THIS TIME, AND ALTHOUGH THEY APPEARED TO BE THE SAME TYPE OF DEFECT AS THOSE TIRES APART OF THE RECALL THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO AT THIS TIME UNLESS MORE TIRES WHERE ADDED TO THE RECALL. I ALSO CONTACTED THE FIRESTONE 800 NUMBER AND WAS TOLD THE SAMETHING. I FEEL THAT THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ALL WILDERNESS AT TIRES, ESPECIALLY THOSE SHOWING DEFECTS SUCH AS MINE. I AM WORRIED ABOUT MY SAFETY WITH THESE TIRES ON MY VEHICLE BUT I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES AT THIS TIME NOR SHOULD I BE EXPECTED TO IF THIS IS A DEFECT THAT THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT BUT WANTS TO ISOLATE TO ONE PLANT. PE02000; TIRE TREAD SEPARATION: ALL FOUR TIRES WERE SHOWING SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION. TIRE SIZE P23575R15, TIRES WERE NOT BUILT AT THE DECATUR, ILLINOIS PLANT. DOT # BEGINNING WITH VN (FROM THE CANADIAN PLANT). ORIGINAL TIRE EQUIPMENT. TIRES PURCHASED ON A 1998, FORD, EXPLORER. HAVE PROBLEM WITH A SLOPPY / LOOSE STEERING THAT WONDERS AND HAS 2 TO 3 INCHES OF PLAY. THE ORIGINAL STEERING AND THE 3RD WHICH WAS A TEMPORARY STEERING DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM BUT ALL OF THE NEW STEERING DID. THIS PLAY / SLOPPY STEERING HAS ALMOST CAUSED MY WIFE WITH KIDS TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICAL. THIS ALSO HAPPENED TO ME . THE STEERING IS PULLED BY THE ROAD DIFFERENCES AND THE WIND AND YOU MUST CONSTANTLY CORRECT THE STEERING TO STAY STRAIGHT. THE ORIGINAL DEALER REPLACED THE ORIGINAL STEERING WITH A NEW ONE. THE NEXT FEW WHERE REPLACED BY A NEW DEALER IN ANOTHER STATE. THE NEW STEERING HAD THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THE TEMPORARY STEERING THAT WAS PUT IN WAS FINE. THE NEXT 2 WENT BACK TO THE LOOSE / SLOPPY STEERING AGAIN. THE NEW DEALER( HERITAGE FORD) WILL NO LONGER REPLACE THE RACK BECAUSE HE IS UNABLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY SENT IT BACK TO THE FORD DEALER WHO STATED THAT WE SHOUILD TRY ANOTHER DEALER TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIND IT. I JUST WANT IT CORRECTED SO IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE. *AK
PURCHASED A 1998 FORD EXPLORER, WHICH HAD FOUR FIRESTONE TIRES,SLOWING TO A SPEED OF 15MPH, RIGHT REAR TIRE SUDDENLY BLEW OUTWITHIN SECONDS IT WAS COMPLETELY DEFLATED.
TWO OF THESE TIRES SHOW SEPERATION AT THE POINT WHERE THE TREAD ATTACHES TO THE BODY. FIRESTONE SAYS THEY ARE NOT PART OF THE RECALL AS THEY WERE NOT MADE IN DECATUR. HAVE REPLACED THEM WITH MICHELINS AT OUR EXPENSE. ONE OF MY 16 INCH WILDERNESS AT TIRES IS SHOWING SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING ON THEM AND WOULD NOT WANT THEM REPLACED WITH FIRESTONE TIRES IF THEY WERE TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE THE WILDERNESS AT TIRES MADE IN CANADA THAT WERE NOT RECALLED, BUT ALL 4 TIRES HAVE A CRACK AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE RIGHT WHERE THE TREAD WOULD SEPARATE. I SHOWED THEM TO A FIRESTONE DEALER AND HE AGREED TO REPLACE THE TIRES. THE TIRES HAVE NOT FAILED BUT THEY ALL HAVE 360 DEGREE CIRCUMFERENTIAL CRACKS ON EACH TIRE WHERE THE TREAD MEETS THE SIDEWALL. TO ME THIS INDICATES A POTENTIAL PRELUDE TO A TREAD SEPARATION. MY FORD EXPLORER HAS BEEN FORD DEALER (ONLY) MAINTAINED FROM NEW. THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES ON IT WERE AT P235/75/R15 DOT VNHL , TUBELESS RADIALS. THEY HAD DONE 63000 MILES WHEN INSPECTED BY FIRESTONE TECHNICIANS AND FOUND TO HAVE THREAD LINE CRACKING OVER 360 DEGREES ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THE REMAINING THREAD DEPTH WAS 0.25 INCHES ON ALL TIRES -- WEAR WAS EVEN. THE THREAD DEPTH WAS MORE THAN THE HEIGHT OF THE MOLDED LOW THREAD LEVEL INDICATORS.( DOT NUMBER: VNHL TIRE SIZE: 235/75/R15 )

I LOST ONE TIRE THE TREADS WERE JUST COMING OFF. FIRESTONE SAID IT WAS A ROAD HAZARD.MY TIRES ARE NOT ON THE RECALL. THE TRANSMISSION STOP WORKING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH. FOWARD OR REVERSE GEARS WILL NOT ENGAGE. TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY I SWITCH TO 4W LOW. THE DEALER SAID THE TRANSMISSION GEAR BROKE AND THE 4W GEAR CHAMBER WERE DAMAGED. DEALER COULD NOT FIND THE PART NEEDED IT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL 2001. DEALER USED A SUBSITUTE PART..
WHILE TIRES WERE BEING CHANGED, OWNER NOTICED SPRING THAT HOLDS UP PARKING BRAKE CABLE HAS RUBBED THROUGH THE INSTALLATION. NOW THE SPRING IS ACTUALLY RUBBING THROUGH THE CABLE. EVENUALLY, THE CABLE WILL SNAP AND PUNCTURE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. OWNER IS ABLE TO SEE WHERE PARKING CABLE IS RUBBING ON THE NEW TIRE. PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. *AK

MY MECHANIC SAID AT LEAST TWO OF THE TIRES WERE SHOWING SIGNS OF TREAD SEPARATION. FIRESTONE SAID TO GO TO THEIR DEALER, WHO SAID HE COULDN'T DETEMINE THAT THERE WAS ANY TREAD SEPARATION SIGNS. THE FIRESTONE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT HE'S NEVER SEEN SUCH SIGNS, BECAUSE AS SOON AS THERE'S A PROBLEM, THE TIRES FAIL. FURTHER, THE FIRESTONE DEALER STATED THAT, IF HE WERE THE CUSTOMER, HE WOULD REPLACE THE TIRES. I'VE SINCE REPLACED THE TIRED WITH GOODYEAR WRANGLERS. MY EXPLORER HAS ~22,000 MILES ON IT. ALL FOUR TIRES ARE SEVERELY CRACKING WHERE THE TREAD JOINS THE TIRE. THE TIRES HAVE BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND ROTATED AT PROPER INTERVALS. I HAVE NOT DONE ANY OFF ROAD DRIVING WITH MY VEHICLE. ALL THE MILES HAVE BEEN NORMAL CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING. WITH THE RECENT RECALL OF THE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS 15 INCH TIRES, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE SAME STRUCTURAL FAILURE IS PRESENT IN MY 16 INCH TIRES. THE CRACKING INVOLVES THE ENTIRE TIRE. IT SEEMS THAT THE TREAD COULD JUST BREAK FREE AT ANY TIME. I AM ASKING FOR YOUR HELP IN SEEING TO IT THAT ALL SIZES OF THE FIRESTONE TIRES ARE RECALLED. UPON ENTERING INTO A INTERSECTION VEHICLE WILL COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER CANNOT IDENTIFY THE CAUSE. PLEASE GIVE ANY FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
TIRES ARE DAMAGE AND CRACKING
I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD BE LOOKING AT THE OTHER 15" WILDERNESS AT TIRES THAT ARE NOT IN THE RECALL. WE HAVE A SET ON A 1998 EXPLORER THAT HAS BEEN EXCELLENTLY MAINTAINED. THE TIRES HAVE NEVER BEEN INFLATED LESS THAN THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED 26 PSI. IN FACT I HAVE KEPT THEM INFLATED AT 28 PSI. THE TIRES HAVE 30,000 MILES ON THEM AND EXHIBIT ONLY ONE CRACK BUT THAT CRACK IS COMPLETELY AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF EACH TIRE AND IN APPROXIMATELY 1/2" FROM THE PERIMETER ON ALL FOUR TIRES. I HAVE NOT LOOKED AT THE SPARE BUT I SUSPECT IT IS OK SINCE IT HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE VEHICLE. OUR TIRES WERE MADE IN CANADA AND EXHIBIT DOT CODE VNHL1PY477X5 AND THUS THEY ARE NOT IN THE RECALL ACCORDING TO FORD AND FIRESTONE. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO A TIRE AT 30,000 MILES. I HAD GONE TO BOTH A FIRESTONE STORE AND THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SAID TO CONTACT FIRESTONE. FIRESTONE AND FORD ARE NOT DOING ENOUGH ON THIS RECALL. THIS RECALL DID NOT CATCH THEM BY SURPRISE AS THEY HAVE RECALLED TIRES IN FOREIGN NATIONS WITHOUT INFORMING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC. MY EXPLORER SITS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AND CLEARLY SHOWS SIGNS OF TIRE SEPERATION THAT IS ABOUT TO COME. AS OF FRIDAY THE 25TH OF AUGUST FORD HAS TOLD ME ANOTHER 45 DAYS FOR TIRES, CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SO POOR AT FIRESTONE I REFUSE TO EVEN DEAL WITH THEM. FIRESTONES TOP EXECUTIVES DO NOT WISH TO TALK TO ANY CONSUMERS AS I HAVE TRIED TO CONTACT THEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS ONLY TO BE TRANSFERED TO LINES THAT ARE NON EXISTANT IN THE END. I DO NOT BELEIVE IN FILING LAWSUITS AGAINST CORPORATIONS AS I FEEL IT HURTS AMERICA MORE THAN IT HELPS. MY DAUGHTER, SHARON MARIE BELL, 19, DIED ON OCTOBER 25, 1999 AT UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS MEDICAL BRANCH AS A RESULT OF INJURIES SUSTAINED FROM AN AUTOMIBILE ACCIDENT ON OCTOBER 17, 1999. ACCORDING TO THE GALVESTON POLICE REPORT, IN GALVESTON TEXAS, SHARON'S 1998 FORD EXPLORER SLID OFF THE ROAD AS THE BACK RIGHT TIRE RAPIDLY DEFLATED. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE THEN FLIPPED AND ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES. SHARON WAS TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE AND WAS REVIVED BY EMERGENCY PERSONEL AFTER NO PULSE OR RESPIRATION WERE OBSERVED. SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE SHE REMAINED IN A COMA UNTIL LIFE SUPPORT WAS TAKEN OFF. SHARON WAS A SOPHMORE MARINE BIOLOGY MAJOR AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY AT GALVESTON, TEXAS. PRIOR TO ANNOUNCED RECALL THIS SUMMER,THE TIRES WERE MAKING NOISE LIKE 18 WHEELERS DO PRIOR TO LOSING THEIR TREAD. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER AND THEY INSPECTED THE TIRES AND SAID THEY WERE OK. HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD THE TIRES ROTATED AND REBALANACED AND THEY STILLL MAKE THE NOISE. THE RUBBER AT THE BASE OF THE FRONT TIRES TREAD IS CRACKING 360 DEGREES AROUND THE TIRE. THE FIRESTONE DEALER SAID THEY NEEDED TO COME OFF THE VEHICLE. ONCE OFF, HE SAID THE TREAD WAS NOT SEPARATING SO HE COULD NOT GIVE ME AN ADJUSTMENT FOR THE TIRES. I STILL REPLACED ALL FIVE TIRES (THE OTHER THREE TIRES HAD LESS THAN 16000 MILES) WITH NEW BRIDGESTONE TIRES AND HAVE THE OLD TIRES IN MY GARAGE.
