DEFOGGER ISN'T WORKING WHICH MAKES ALL WINDOWS FOG UP. *AK
THIS REPORT IS FOR A PREVIOUSLY OWNED EXPLORER, NOT THE ONE IDENTIFIED BY VIN AND PURCHASE DATE HERE. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN 1995 AND HAD 2 TIRES DELAMINATE ON TWO SEPERATE OCCASIONS. ON BOTH OCCASIONS I WAS TRAVELLING ON I-15 AT ABOUT 70 TO 75 MPH, BOTH WERE ON HOT DAYS. ONE WAS A RIGHT REAR TIRE, THE OTHER WAS A LEFT FRONT TIRE. I HAVE HAD PREVIOUS TROUBLES WITH FIRESTONE TIRES SHREADING ON A 1989 BRONCO II. THE BRONCO II INCIDENT WAS TAKEN TO THE FIRESTONE DEALER. THE EXPLOYER INCIDENT WAS REPORTED TO THE FORD DEALER. I HAVE REPEATEDLY REQUESTED OF THE FORD DEALER THAT I GET TIRES OTHER THAN FIRESTONE, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEMS I HAVE HAD, BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE REFUSED TO STAND BEHIND THERE WARRANTIES. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT WOULD COST ME SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS MORE. WHEN I REPORTED THE DELAMINATIONS TO THE FORD DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THESE TIRES WERE DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM MILEAGE WITH MINIMUM WEAR. THIS, I WAS TOLD, REQUIRED USE OF HARDER RUBBER, WHICH WAS MORE DIFFICULT TO BOND TO THE REST OF THE TIRE. THEY SAID THAT THE REASON THE TIRE DELAMINATED IS THAT IS WAS A SUPERIOR WEARING TIRE AND THAT I SHOULD BE PLEASED THAT I GOT 50000 MILES OUR OF THEM. I, OF COURSE, STRONGLY DISAGREED, AND FEEL THAT A TIRE THAT DELAMINATES WITH NO OUTWARD SIGNS OF WEAR IS EXTRA DANGEROUS. I NOW HAVE ANOTHER EXPLOYER, THE ONE IDENTIFIED IN THIS REPORT, THAT HAS FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES. I ALSO HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL THAT WORKS WITH ME THAT HAS AN EXPLORER THAT HAS HAD 2 TIRES DELAMINATE. NOW THAT I FIND HOW WIDE SPREAD THIS PROBLEM IS AND HOW LONG THEY'VE KNOWN ABOUT IT, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY IMMEDIATE ACTION IS NOT TAKEN TO REPLACE THESE TIRES. I HAVE ALREADY HAD TWO TERIFYING EXPERIENCES AND I DO NOT WANT TO BE IN JEOPARDY ANY LONGER. THE FORD DEALER TO WHICH I HAVE REFERRED IS THE SAME AS LISTING IN THIS FORM AS THE PRESENT DEALER.( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: UNKNOWN )
WINDSHIELD WIPER COMES ON WITHOUT WARNING. ACTIVATOR ASY WAS REPLACED AT 11990, THREE MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURS TO THIS DAY. REAR WIPER WOULD NOT WORK AND THE MOTOR WAS REPLACED AT 23493 MILES, OPPROX. 6 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE. I STILL HAVE PROBLEMS TO THIS DAY. THE REASON THE VEHICLE HAS NOT RETURNED FOR REPAIRS IS THE GREAT INCONVENIENCE THAT TAKES PLACE ANYTIME A FORD REPAIR SHOP IS INVOLVED. CAN YOU BRING IT BACK TOMORROW, CAN YOU LEAVE IT WITH US ALL DAY, WE ARE WAITING FOR THE PART, WE ARE NOT FINISHED CAN YOU LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT OR BRING IT BACK, SORRY WE DO NOT PROVIDE LONERS BUT WE CAN GIVE YOU A RIDE. I TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN ALMOST EVERYDAY AND SOMEONE GIVING ME A RIDE JUST DOESN'T WORK. THESE REPAIRS ARE ON TOP OF 5 RECALLS THAT I CAN THINK OF. I HAVE PAST THE POINT OF FEELING SAFE IN THIS VEHICLE WITH ALL THE REPAIRS AND RECALLS, BUT WHAT CAN BE DONE WITHOUT HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE COST OF BUYING A NEW VEHICLE, AND WHEN WILL THE DEALER STOP PAYING FOR THE SAME REPAIRS. IT SEEMS THAT THEY HOLD ALL THE CARDS IN DETERMING HOW LONG A PART SHOULD LAST AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST.*AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL, #99S09, CONCERNING SPPED CONTROL FAILURE. RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE ON JUNE 16,1999. BUT, ON JUNE 30, 1999, CONSUMER ACTIVATED CRUISE CONTROL AND IT STUCK AT 70 MPH ,CAUSING BRAKES TO BURN OUT WHILE TRYING TO STOP VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK
WAS GOING UP AN INCLINE WITH FOOT ON BRAKES, RELEASED BRAKES WHILE STILL IN DRIVE. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO GO BACKWARDS, AS IF IN REVERSE GEAR. *AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON WITHOUT APPLICATION, SOMETIMES THE WIPERS STOP WORKING IN THE MIDDLE OF OPERATION. AND SOMETIMES THE WIPERS WILL NOT COME ON AT ALL. MANUFACTURER/DEALER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. PART HAS BEEN ORDERED TO CORRECT PROBLEM. *AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS WORKING WITH SWITCH IN THE OFF POSITION. DEALER NOTIFIED AND INFORMED CONSUME RTHAT THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AT THIS TIME. *AK
THE ENGINE MAKES NOISES SIMILAR TO A DIESEL ENGINE. FORD SUPPOSEDLY HAS AN INTERNAL BULLETIN ON THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM PRIOR TO SELLING THE VEHICLE. THEY HAVE AGREED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE BUT NOT TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE. I EXPECT THAT THIS PROBLEM EXIST IN MANY FORD EXPLORERS.
ALL PROBLEMS ARE ELECTRICAL:WIPERS/WASHER FAILED-TRANSMISSION SHIFTED ERRATICALLY-4WD FAILED TO ENGAGE. AFTER CONNECTOR REPAIRS, REPLACING 3 WIRE HARNESSES AND PCM, PROBLEM HAS APPARENTLY BEEN FIXED--FOR NOW. WIPER/4WD PROBLEMS APPEAR RELATED TO GEM (GENERAL ELECTRONICS MODULE) AND WIRING HARNESSES. TRANSMISSION SHIFTING PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH PCM (POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE). THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED AT 1150 AND 2500 MILES INCLUDING 3 DIFFERENT VISITS TO SERVICE DEPT. VEHICLE OUT OF SERVICE NEARLY 3 WEEKS IN 2 1/2 MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP.
WOULD BE DRIVING VEHICLE WHEN THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD FAIL TO WORK PROPERLY. WOULD COME ON BY THEMSELVES. WHENEVER ITS RAINING, WIPERS WOULD STAY IN LOW POSITION & NOT HIGH. THIS CAUSED THE DRIVER TO HAVE VERY POOR VISIBILITY. BEEN TO DEALER & MECHANIC COULD NOT CORRECT PROBLEM. * AK

NHTSA RECALL 99V-062 001/SPEED CONTROL CABLE: CONSUMER PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE ON 31 MAY 99. LESS THEN TWO WEEK LATER, CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE. DEALER INDICATED THA THE WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRING THIS RECALL BEFORE CONSUMER DROPPED VEHICLE OFF AT DEALER'S LOT. CAN NHTSA PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
MULTI-TURN FUNCTION TURN SIGNAL/ WINDSHIELD WASHER, INTERMITTENT WIPER AND HIGH-BEAM MALFUNCTIONS. WASHERS FAILS TO ACTIVATE WHEN STALK IS "PUSHED IN" FOR WASHER REQUEST (EVENTUALLY WASHER WILL FUNCTION AFTER SEVERAL "PUSHES" WASHER PUMP NOT BROKEN), ACTIVATING TURN SIGNAL(S) ACTIVATES WINDSHIELD WIPER (ACTIVATING TURN SIGNAL SHOULD NOT TURN YOUR WIPERS ON), WIPERS TURN ON WITHOUT USER INTERVENTION (WIPERS TURN ON BY THEMSELF) *AK
TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING, FELT LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. WHEN IT CHANGED OVER THERE WOULD BE A REAL BAD JERK. CONSUMER CONTACTED DEALER . DEALER SAID IT WOULD TAKE 60 DAYS TO GET A NEW TRANSMISSION. *AK
WATER IS COMING FROM THE CHASSIS. WATER LEAKS INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WHICH COULD CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. *AK
VEHCILE WILL HESITATE TO STALL WHEN TURNING A CORNER OR TAKING OFF. DEALER SAID IT WAS A COMPUTER PROBLEM WHICH THEY WERE AWARE OFF, BUT INSISTED THAT THERE WAS NO REMEDY AT THIS TIME.*AK

PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIRES ARE BEING REPORTED ON CHANNEL 11 NEWS TODAY AND I HAVE HAD A SIMILAR VERY FRIGHTENING INCIDENT WITH A BLOW-OUT ON MY SUV. BOTH FORD AND FIRESTONE REFUSED TO ACCEPT ANY FAULT OR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEM. MY LOCAL GARAGE TANGLEWILDE AUTO SERVICE (HOUSTON 713-785-3470 STEVE MUNSEY) TELL ME THAT THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS CUSTOMERS (FORD EXPLORER OWNERS) WHO HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME PROBLEMS. IF THESE TIRES CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO DEATH AND INJURY THEN THEY SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE DEFECT. *AK( DOT NUMBER: 027477 TIRE SIZE: P235/75R15 )

WINDSHEILD WIPERS COME ON WHENEVER CONSUMER STARTS VEHICLE. THE DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. *AK
WHILE MAKING A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD TURN ON. WHILE TRAVELING IN HARD RAIN WIPERS HAVE DIFFICULT TIME KEPING UP. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATON.
THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS DO NOT FUNCTION IN THE HIGH SPEED. ALSO, THE WIPERS TURN OFF AND ON AT WILL. WE HAVE REPEATEDLY CALLED THE FORD DEALER AND HAVE BEEN TOLD FORD MOTOR IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT AS OF TODAY, HAVE NOT COME UP WITH A SOLUTION. THE WINDSHILD WIPERS FAILURE TO WORK IN THE HIGH SPEAD PUT US AS RISK ON JULY 31 WHILE TRAVELING ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE IN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM. WE WERE UNABLE TO SEE THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD AND HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD UNTIL THE RAIN SUBSIDED. THIS PROBLEM IS MORE THAN AN INCONVENIENCE, IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD! OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP IS UNABLE TO GIVE ME A DATE THAT REPLACEMENT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS ONLY WORK ON LOW SPEED, AND COME ON WITHOUT WARNING. DEALER CAN'T FIX PROBLEM. *AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON WHEN IN OFF POSITION AND DO NOT ALWAYS WORK PROPERLY WHEN IN ON POSITION. WE HAD OUR EXPLORER INTO DEALER ON JULY 24 FOR MULTIPLE PROBLEMS, ONE BEING THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. THE PART WAS ORDERED AND STILL HAS NOT COME IN. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE WIPERS START WORKING WHEN THEY DON'T NEED TO OR STOP WORKING PROPERLY WHEN YOU NEED THEM.
WIPERS WILL NOT WORK AT TIMES
THE REARVIEW MIRROR VIBRATES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS REDUCING DRIVER VISIBILITY AND CAUSING VISUAL DISTRACTION POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE ELECTROCHROMIC INTERIOR REARVIEW MIRROR BEGINS TO VIBRATE RENDERING IMAGES UNCLEAR. THIS CONDITION MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE DRIVER TO DISCERN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS BEHIND THE VEHICLE INCLUDING DISTANCE, RATE OF CLOSURE, ETC. IN ADDITION, THIS PROBLEM IS COMPOUNDED DURING NIGHTTIME DRIVING WHEN THE REAR TRAFFIC HEADLIGHT IMAGE OSCILLATES, CREATING A VISUAL DISTRACTION FOR THE DRIVER. BOTH THESE HAZARDOUS SAFETY CONDITIONS COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT AND POSSIBLE POTENTIAL PERSONAL INJURY. THIS CHRONIC SAFETY PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED SINCE THE PURCHASE DATE 05/31/99 AND HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY ESCALATED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD MOTOR CORPORATION FOR RESOLUTION. WHILE THE DEALERSHIP IN CONJUNCTION WITH FORD HAS TRIED TO IDENTIFY AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM, INCLUDING REPLACING THE MIRROR, ADJUSTING THE MIRROR, BALANCING TIRES, BALANCING THE DRIVE TRAIN, AND REPLACING 1 WHEEL, THEY HAVE YET TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AND IDENTIFY THE VIBRATION SOURCE. *AK
A CHILD PASSENGER SEATED IN A BOOSTER SEAT BECAME ENTANGLED BY AUTOMATIC SEAT BELT. THE BELT WAS ENGAGED IN THE AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR MODE AND WAS ALSO TWISTED ABNORMALLY. WHEN THE BELT WAS UNBUCKLED, THE AUTOMATIC LOCKING RETRACTOR MODE CAUSED ALL OF THE SLACK TO BE DRAWN UP INTO THE MECHANISM AND THE REMANING PORTION OF THE BELT BECAME EXTREMELY TIGHT SURROUNDING THE CHILD'S MIDSECTION. SINCE THIS MODE DOES NOT ALLOW ANY SLACK TO BE GIVEN BACK, AND NO OVERRIDE PROVIDED, THE BELT HAD TO BE CUT IN HALF TO REMOVE THE CHILD FROM THE VEHICLE.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE GOING ON WHEN NOT TURNED ON. GETTING WORSE. ALSO, SPEEDS ARE NOT CORRECT WHEN ARE TURNED ON. HAVE ALREADY ALSO HAD TO HAVE GEAR SHIFT MECHANISM REPLACED DO TO FAILURE, STILL STICKS TRYING TO TAKE KEY OUT SOMETIMES.
WHEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR VEHICLE DOES NOT ACCELERATE. AMONG OTHER PROBLEMS,THE ENGINE AND THE MAIN SENSOR MODULE HAVE ALSO BEEN REPLACED. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED, BUT HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ACCELERATION PROBLEM. *AK *ML
THE WINDSHIELD WIPER STARTS UP WHEN THE CONTROLS ARE NOT ACTIVATED. 30 - 60 SECONDS LATER IT WILL START AGAIN. *AK
THERE ARE ALREADY 4-5 THINGS WRONG WITH THIS BRAND NEW VEHICLE. I HAD TO HAVE THE CD REPLACED, THE DRIVER'S SIDE WAS MAKING NOISE DUE TO LACK OF LUBRICATION, THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS RECALLED, AND THE PART HAS STILL NOT COME IN AS PROMISED, THE WINDOW SEAL KEEP COMING OFF, THE HEATING SYSTEM IS TOO HOT AT LOW SETTING AND TOO COLD AT LOW SETTING. CONSUMER IS HAVING DIFFICULTY RECEIVING RECALL REPAIRS (99S09 99V-062) NOT COMPLETED DUE TO LACK OF PARTS, (99S18 99V-164) DUE TO SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH THE DEALERSHIP. MJS
THE FRONT / REAR SHOULDER BELTS RIDE UP ON THE NECKS OF THE DRIVER & PASSENGERS. IF DRIVER OR PASSENGERS ARE UNDER 5 FT., THE BELT WILL NOT STAY ON THEIR SHOULDER AREA. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER & CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC THAT NO ADJUSTMENT CAN BE MADE TO CORRECT PROBLEM. *AK *ML
I WAS DRIVING DOWN I-390 AT APPROX 70MPH WHEN WE STARTED HEARING A STRANGE NOISE. I SLOWED DOWN TO APPROX. 60MPH AND CHANGED LANES TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS JUST ROAD NOISE. WITHIN SECONDS, PASSENGER SIDE REAR TIRE BLEW OUT. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO KEEP VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AND STOP SAFELY. FIRESTONE TOLD ME THAT I PROBABLY RAN OVER SOMETHING, WHICH WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER THEY EXAMINED THE TIRE, HOWEVER, THEY REPLACED IT FREE OF CHARGE (SIDEWALL WAS PRETTY MUCH GONE).( DOT NUMBER: W2?????? TIRE SIZE: P255/70R16 )
WINDSHIELD WIPERS RANDOMLY ACTIVATE, CYCLE ONCE, THEN RETURN TO PARKED POSITION. THIS COULD EASILY DISTRACT A DRIVER AND THIS LAPSE OF ATTENTION COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *AK

SOON AFTER PURCHASE PAINT PROBLEM REVEALED MULTIPLE BUBBLES THROUGH OUT THE EXTERIOR OF THE CAR. SUV WAS THEN TAKEN TO DEALER/BODY SHOP WERE OTHER PROBLEMS WERE CREATED TO THE COSMETICS OF THE CAR. IT TOOK ABOUT A YEAR TO ATTEMPT TO CORRECT PROBLEMS THAT WERE CREATED. THE SUV'S DOORS WERE TAKEN OFF WHICH THEN CREATED A WIND NOISE TO THE DRIVERS SIDE THAT CAN'T BE CORRECTED. THE DOORS WERE REPLACED MISALIGNED AND WHEN COMPLAINTS WERE MADE WITH HIGHER MANAGEMENT THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT I WAS TO PICKY WITH THEIR WORK. I AM VERY DISATSIFIED WITH HOW THEY HANDLE THIS VEH. DEFECT. *AK
RECALL 99V062; DEALER DEACTIVATED CRUISE CONTROL DUE TO RECALL. WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY TO MAXIMUM SPEED (120 MPH). REGULAR OR EMERGENCY BRAKES ONLY SLOWED VEHICLE TO 100 MPH. VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED, TWO MILES AWAY, WHEN SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL AND IGNITION TURNED OFF. CRUISE CONTROL HAD NOT BEEN DEACTIVATED AS DEALER CLAIMED THEY HAD. *AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS KEEP GETTING WORSE. THEY ACTIVATE ON THEIR OWN EVERY 2 TO 30 SEC. DEALER CANNOT FIX THE PROBLEM. *AK
I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THE 1999 FORD EXPLORERS DO NOT HAVE A SHIELD PROTECTING THE GAS TANK. THE 1997 AND 1998 HAVE A SHIELD. IF I DID NOT HAVE A FULL TANK OF GAS I COULD HAVE BURNED TO DEATH. SOMETHING FLEW UP FROM THE ROAD AND STRUCK MY GAS TANK. I WAS SICK FOR 4 HOURS FROM THE GAS FUMES. PLEASE SEE WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS. WINDSHIELD WIPERS COMES ON/OFF ON ITS OWN. WHEN TURNED ON WILL NOT GO FAST. WOULD SLOW DOWN OR SPEED UP ON ITS OWN. TOOK TO DEALER & WAS INFORMED A MODULE IS NEEDED. MANUFACTURER HAS PARTS ON BACK ORDER.*AK
WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON AT WILL, AND HIGH SPEED WON'T OPERATE. TWICE HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN VERY HEAVY RAIN AND UNABLE TO SEE SAFELY WITHOUT HIGH SPEED WIPERS. DEALER HAS SEEN VEHICLE TWICE, AND STILL NOT FIXED. SECOND PART ON ORDER, AND NO CALL FROM DEALER WITHIN PROMISED TIME PERIOD. SECOND DEFECT FIRST OCCURRED ON THE DATE OF THIS COMPLAINT---REAR WIPER/WASHER WOULD NOT OPERATE AT ALL. AFTER VEHICLE TURNED OFF AND SAT APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR, REAR WIPER THEN WORKED. SEEMS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM, LIKE THE FRONT WIPERS. THIRD DEFECT IS NOISY FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SEAT BELT ANCHOR.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS COME ON WITHOUT TURNING THE SWITCH ON AND WHEN YOU NEED THEM WORKING THEY WORK ONLY IN LOW SPEED. THEY COME ON WHILE DRIVING OVER SMALL BUMPS, OR JUST COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. DEALER SEEN CAR IN JUN-1999, 4 MONTS LATER PROBLEM STIL EXIST.DEALER CAN'T FIX THE PROBLEM.

I HAVE COMPLAINED A FEW TIMES ABOUT THE PROBLEM, THE DEALER KEEPS TELLING ME THE PART IS STILL ON BACK ORDER (4 MONTHS)
