THE CONSUMER IS EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKES. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CREATES CONDENSATION ON THE BRAKE AND THE DRIVER MUST INCREASE THE THROTTLE BEFORE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WILL RELEASE. THE OWNER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD "THAT WAS THE WAY IT WAS DESIG NED TO FUNCTION AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO. *JB *SC
AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE AIR BAG MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED.*AK
NHTSA CAMPAIGN 04V442000; FORD ISSUED A REAR LIFTGATE GLASS RECALL. THIS VEHICLE IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT THE DEALER DOES NOT HAVE THE AVAILABLE PARTS IN ORDER TO REPAIR.
2002 FORD EXPLORER ROLLOVER INCIDENT ON 12/26/2004 RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF MY STEPSON.*AK
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED, THEN EXPLODED INADVERTENTLY. AS A RESULT, THE STEERING WHEEL CAUGHT ON FIRE. VEHICLE REMAINED IN A GARAGE WHERE THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. *AK
THE CONSUMER CAME TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN HE PULLED OFF, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL JAMMED DOWN TO THE FLOOR. THE CONSUMER HAD TO PHYSICALLY PULL THE GAS PEDAL UP WITH HANDS. *JB
THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON A FRIEND OF MINES 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT ARE AWFUL. I DRIVE THIS VEHICLE FROM TIME TO TIME AND THEY DO AN AWFUL JOB WITH SNOW AND RAIN. HAVE OTHERS EVER COMPLAINED ABOUT EXPLORERS IN THIS WAY?? THIS IS HER FOURTH FORD EXPLORER OVER THE PAST MANY YEARS-SHE HAD A 1996, 1998, AND 2000 EXPLORER AND THEY ALL HAD AWFUL WINDSHIELD WIPERS. *NM
WHEN SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO PARK COLUMN SHIFT LEVER WOULD GET STUCK. UPON A STALLING ,, WHEN SHIFTING FROM DRIVE INTO PARK TO RESTART THE CAR, COLUMN SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF RESULTING IN BEING UNABLE USE THE VEHICLE WHILE IN A PARKING LOT AT NIGHT WITH SMALL CHILDREN IN THE CAR. VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER, WHERE WE WERE TOLD THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT AN ESTIMATE OF $747.00 FOR A THREE YEAR OLD VEHICLE.*AK
AT 74000 MILES OUR TRANSMISSION WENT OUT COMPLETELY WHILE WE WERE ON VACATION! THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE, SAID THAT "WE WERE THE ONLY ONE'S WHO HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM" (YEAH RIGHT!) IT COST US $6000 OUT OF OUR POCKET TO FIX. AT 86000 MILES THE REAR WINDOW CRACKED RIGHT BELOW THE WINDOW. FORD AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO FIX IT. AGAIN, STAYTON FORD TOLD US THAT,"WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE." AT AROUND 85000, 95000 AND 105000 MILES, THE REAR SEALS LEAKED. WE WERE PROMISED EACH TIME THAT THEY WOULD LAST "FOR AT LEAST 50000 MILES." WE WERE ALWAYS A FEW MILES AWAY FROM GETTING THEM REPLACED FOR FREE SINCE THEY'RE LIMITED WARRANTY IS ONLY GOOD FOR 10000 MILES. AT 111000 MILES THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT "HAYWIRE." EVEN WHEN ALL OF THE DOOR AND HATCH ARE CLOSED, THE DOME LIGHT CONTINUES TO GO ON AND OFF (MAKING IT HARD TO DRIVE AT NIGHT) BECAUSE IT SENSES THAT A "DOOR IS A JAR." SOMETIMES, THE KEY PAD THAT'S LOCATED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW SETS OFF THE ALARM WHEN WE PUSH THE FIRST NUMBER ON THE KEY. TOTALLY UNRELIABLE VEHICLE THAT I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE! *NM
RECALL 04V442000 CONCERNING REAR LIFTGATE GLASS. AFTER RECALL REPAIRS WERE MADE THE REAR GLASS SHATTERED WHILE OPENING THE LIFTGATE. THE VEHICLE IS AT THE DEALER.*AK
END GATE CRACKED, NO APPEARANT REASON. *AK
CAR WAS PARKED. WHEN MY WIFE WAS WALKING TO THE VEHICLE, SHE NOTICED A LARGE CRACK DOWN THE BACK DOOR (HATCH AREA) OF VEHICLE WHICH IS DIRECTLY BELOW THE GLASS. TAKE NOTE THAT IF THIS PANEL FALLS OFF (AND COULD WITH THE CRACK), IT COULD FALL ONTO ANOTHER VEHICLE CAUSING HARM OR TRAGEDY. IF THE PANEL ALSO FALLS OFF, THE GLASS IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED WHICH ALSO CAN RESULT IN IT FALLING OFF ONTO ANOTHER VEHICLE OR ONTO THE HIGHWAY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT.
REAR BEARING FAILURE OF 2002 FORD EXPLORER. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER BECAUSE OF REAR END NOISE AND WAS TOLD THE BEARING WAS ABOUT TO EXPLODE AND COULD HAVE LOST AN AXLE. *AK
I WAS DRIVING,WHEN I HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMMING FROM UNDERNEATH MY FORD EXPLORER.I THOUGHT FOR A SECOND OR TWO,THAT I HAD RAN OVER SOMETHING IN THE STREET.THE VEHICLE,SLOWED.WHEN I STOPPED FOR THE TRAFFIC LIGHT,IT WOULD NOT MOVE.THE OD OFF LIGHT WAS FLASHING.THE ONLY WAY I COULD MOVE THE TRUCK WAS IN NEUTRAL.I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO JOE RIZZA FORD IN N.RIVERSIDE,IL.THEY TOLD ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED.I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK FROM RIZZA NEW ON 09/11/01.59,000 MILES WAS ON THE SPEDOMETER.I BELIEVE THE TRANSMISSION WAS DEFECTIVE.I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST ME $3,400.00 TO GET IT REPLACED.I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO GO FURTHER IN DEBT AND BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE.*AK
THERE IS A RECALL ON MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER CONCERNING THE LIFTGATE HINGES. I WAS NOTIFIED IN SEPTEMBER THAT THE PARTS WOULD BE IN THE DEALERSHIPS IN NOVEMBER. THEY HAVE JUST ARRIVED IN FEBRUARY. IN THE MEANTIME THE APPLIQUE ON MY LIFTGATE HAS CRACKED. I WAS TOLD THAT FORD WOULD NOT PAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AND THAT IT WILL COST ABOUT $350.00. THIS IS MY 3 FORD EXPLORER AND WILL PROBABLY BE THE LAST. ALL MY DEALER TELLS ME IS THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I WROTE A LETTER TO FORD AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN RESPOND. WHAT KIND OF CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THAT?*AK
THE PANEL ON THE REAR LIFTGATE WHICH CONTAINS THE FORD EMBLEM CRACKED FOR NO REASON AND I WAS INFORMED BY 2 DEALERSHIPS THAT IT HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES IN THE PAST TO SIMILAR FORD VEHICLES BUT THAT THEY WILL NOT REPAIR MINES BECAUSE IT HAS OVER 36,000 MILES ON IT, BUT MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IT IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND THE AMOUNT OF MILES SHOULD NOT MATTER TOWARDS FORD REPAIRING THIS DEFECT.*AK
FORD EXPLORER, 2002. STRESS CRACK (ABOUT ONE EIGHTH INCH WIDE, SEVEN INCHES LONG) IN FRAME BELOW REAR HATCH WINDOW, TO THE LEFT OF THE FORD NAME PLATE. CRACK OCCURED WITHOUT ANY EXTERNAL FORCE BEING APPLIED (NO COLLISION, NOT STRUCK BY FOREIGN OBJECT, ETC.) THE FRAME IS SIMPLY NOT ABLE TO CARRY THE WEIGHT OF THE GLASS WINDOW. CONSEQUENTLY, THE REAR GLASS WINDOW APPEARS TO BE IN DANGER OF FALLING OUT. THIS IS THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM AS REPORTED AT WWW.NHTSA.DOT.GOV IN OID NUMBERS: 10049180, 10052830, 10052901, 10053989, 10079762, 10104457, 10105660. IN EACH CASE, NEITHER THE DEALER NOR FORD WOULD FIX THE DEFECTIVE WINDOW FRAME. AND LIKEWISE, THEY WILL NOT FIX THE ONE ON MY VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRENTY IN EFFECT. AN INDIVIDUAL IN THE BODY SHOP AT MY DEALER SAID THAT HE HAS RECENTLY SEEN ABOUT A DOZEN SIMILAR PROBLEMS.*AK
NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN 04V442000; FORD ISSUED A REAR LIFTGATE RECALL. THIS VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED IN A TIMELY MANNER. AS A RESULT, THE LIFTGATE BROKE. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BY OWNER.
APRIL 04 PURCHASED 2002 FORD EXPLORER; JUST OVER 60,000 MILES. NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY;SOLD AS IS. DAY AFTER PURCHASE, NOTICED KNOCKING SOUND. RETURNED TO DEALER. STATED SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR AC. REPAIRED, DID NOT HEAR AFTER REPAIR. APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK AFTER PURCHASE, NOTICED DELAY IN GEARS ENGAGING WHEN GOING FROM PARK TO DRIVE , PARK TO REVERSE ALSO GEAR SHIFT SEEMED TO BE LOOSE. RETURNED TO DEALER; TOLD IT WAS NORMAL FOR THIS MODEL. ADVISED TO KEEP IN OVERDRIVE. LATE JULY 2004, NOTICED DELAY SEEM TO BE GETTING LONGER AND JERKING SUDDENLY WHEN FINALLY ENGAGED. WHILE DRIVING ,OD LIGHT FLASHED ON AND OFF ERRATICALLY. PROBLEM WITH OD LIGHT INTERMITTENT. SPOUSE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER; TOLD THAT IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY, BUT WE COULD MAKE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT. SPOUSE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A SHOP HAD DONE BUSINESS IN THE PAST. THOUGHT THAT IT COULD NEED TRANSMISSION FLUID. CHECKED FLUID LEVELS NOT DEFICIENT. PROBLEMS CONTINUED; HAD THEM LOOK AT IT A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER. COULD NOT DETERMINE PROBLEM, ADVISED TO TAKE TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST IF CONTINUED. PROBLEM PERSISTED. SEEMED TO GET WORSE AS THE WEATHER TURNED COLDER. LATE DECEMBER 04, DELAYS IN ENGAGING GEARS WORSENED; NOW MAKING A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE AND LUNGES WHEN ENGAGES, OD LIGHT FLASHED ERRATICALLY ON A FREQUENT BASIS AND ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT ON AND GEAR SHIFT SEEMED TO BE COMING OUT. JANUARY 2005, SPOUSE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP FOR DIAGNOSTIC. TRANSMISSION SHOT. REBUILT AT A COST OF $2900. FOUND OUT THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN REPAIRED TWICE BEFORE, WHILE UNDER WARRANTY FOR THE SAME PROBLEMS DESCRIBED. ITS OBVIOUS FROM THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN DESIGN DEFECT. WHEN A COMPANY SELLS DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS THEY SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY DO SO KNOWINGLY. RECALL CAMPAIGN: THE LIFTGATE ON THE CONSUMER'S 2002 FORD EXPLORER WAS RECALL BUT NO PARTS WERE AVAILABLE TO REPAIR IT. *BF PRIOR TO THE LIFTGATE BEING REPAIRED IT OPENED TWICE WITHOUT USING THE LATCH RELEASE. THE PLASTIC PANEL WHICH IS A PART OF THE LIFTGATE CRACKED BUT THE DEALER REFUSED TO REPLACE IT UNDER THE RECALL. *NM
THE BACK HATCH ON MY FORD EXPLORER HAS A CRACK IN THE PLASTIC. FORD HAS TOLD US THAT THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. MY TRUCK IS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT I HAVE SEEN. *AK
PURCHASED VEHICLE WITH IN 2 WEEKS TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS EVERY WHERE. TRANSMISSION TOOK TO DEALER. BACK AND FORTH TO DEALER FOR ALMOST ONE YEAR. THEY EVENTUALLY SAID THEY WOULD PUT A NEW TRANNY IN THE TRUCK. WITH IN 2 WKS WAS DOING SAME THING. O/D LIGHT BLINKING, WON'T SHIFT, CLUNKING. TOOK BACK TO DEALER WOULDN'T DO ANY MORE. TOOK TO DIFF. DEALER FOUND OUT THAT THEY HAD PUT A TRANNY OUT OF A JUNK YARD INTO MY EXPLORER. NOT HAPPY. THAT TRANNY LASTED ABOUT 4 MONTHS, HAD REBUILT LASTED 7 MONTHS PARKED FOR A LONG TIME. MAKING PAYMENTS AND COULDN'T AFFORD ANOTHER TRANNY. WORKING ON FINDING ANOTHER TRANNY NOW THAT IT IS PAID FOR. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AS YOU CAN ASK ANYONE WHO OWNS ONE OF THESE VEHICLES AND THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. PERHAPS A CLASS ACTION SUIT WOULD BE THE WAY TO GO SEEING AS FORD IS NOT WILLING TO RECALL THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND REPLACE WITH ONE THAT THEY KNOW DOESN'T HAVE THESE PROBLEMS. I EVEN WENT TO THE BBB AND REPORTED DEALERSHIP AND THE ATTORNEY GENERAL. SEEMS LIKE FORD WOULD WANT TO UPHOLD THERE REPUTATION. BUT I GUESS MONEY IS ALL THAT MATTERS TO THEM. I WILL NEVER HAVE ANOTHER FORD, THE BAD THING IS THAT I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A LOYAL FORD FANATIC. THIS HAS REALLY SUCKED ALOT OF PEOPLES WALLETS DRY INCLUDING MINE. COME ON FORD!!!!!! *TR
PANEL DIRECTLY BELOW REAR WINDSHIELD CRACKED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. FORD DELORSHIPS AND THE FORD MOTOR CORPORATION REFUSE TO REPAIR IT. I WAS TOLD BY THE DELORSHIP AND FORD THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING TO HUNDREDS 2002 EXPLORERS NATIONWIDE. SOME HOW, THEY STILL BELIEVE ITS NOT NECESSARY TO RECALL. THEY HAVE, HOWEVER, ISSUED A TECHINICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TO DELORSHIPS NATIONWIDE WITH INTRUCTIONS ON EXACTLY HOW TO FIX IT.*AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED RECALL 04V442000 FOR THE REAR WINDOW, AND AFTER NUMEROUS CALLS THE PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN RECEIVED BY THE DEALERS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE THROTTLE CABLE BECAME STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO INCREASE SPEED TO DANGEROUS LEVELS. APPLICATION OF THE BRAKES DID LITTLE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN. IMMEDIATELY STOPPED AT SERVICE STATION WHICH IDENTIFED THE PROBLEM AS THE THROTTLE CABLE, NOTING THE THERE WAS AN EXISITING SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. NEW PARTS WERE ORDERED AND REPAIR WAS EFFECTED - COST APPROX $200.00. *AK
WITH NORMAL DRIVING, THE DIFFERENTIAL OF MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER HAS PROGRESSED FROM HUMMING TO A LOADER ROAR WHILE DRIVING AT ALL SPEEDS, WHICH I WAS TOLD WAS 'NORMAL FOR FORDS'. 5,000 MILES LATER I AM LOOKING AT $1,300.00 TO REPLACE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AT MY OWN COST, SINCE FORDS WARRANTY RAN OUT AT A MEASLY 36,000 MILES. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD IN THE FACT THAT IF YOU LISTEN TO WHAT DEALERS AND MECHANICS TELL YOU, YOU CAN BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND HAVE YOUR WHOLE REAR END BUST OUT ON YOU, LEAVING THE CAR WITHOUT ANY CAPABILITIES TO MOVE ANYWHERE. FOR SOMEONE WHO IS NOT THE MOST CONFIDENT DRIVER OR DOES NOT NOW HOW TO REACT, THIS CAN LEAD TO SOME VERY ERRATIC BEHAVIOR.*AK

WHILE TRAVELING AT 25 MPH DRIVER'S GEAR POPPED OUT, AND VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO MOVE. CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER.*AK
BROKEN PLASTIC BODY PANEL ON REAR HATCH OF EXPLORER 2002--VERTICAL BREAK IN PANEL PIECE OCCURRED JUST AFTER PURCHASE. CRACK WIDENS IN COLD WEATHER AND SHRINKS IN WARM, SO IT CAN'T BE PATCHED. JUST COSMETIC, BUT RAMPANT WITH THIS CAR. FORD APPARENTLY DEVELOPED A "BETTER" PANEL, BUT IT IS NOT CONSIDERING THIS A RECALL DEFECT. VERY FRUSTRATING, BUT PROBABLY SHOULD BE EXPECTED BEHAVIOR. *JB
THIS VEHICLE EXPERIENCED MULTIPLE PROBLEMS, AND THE DEALER WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS. CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES, AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. VEHICLE SWAYED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ON ITS OWN. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. ALSO, DOOR RUBBER PANEL FAILED TO STAY ATTACHED TO THE DOOR. MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE BRAKE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED,AND VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. HOWEVER, THE RUBBER PANEL WAS ADJUSTED PROPERLY BY THE MECHANIC. CONSUMER INFORMED THE MECHANIC THIS PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED. *AK
THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WHEN CONSUMER WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE REAR WINDOW HAD SHATTERED. THERE WAS GLASS OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND INSIDE.. THE PANEL HAD BEEN EXPANDED. THE VEHICLES REAR DOOR WAS CLOSED AND IN PLACE. THE CONSUMER HAD RECEIVED A CONSUMER NOTIFICATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AND THE DEALER DID NOT HAVE THE GLASS TO MAKE THE REPAIR. *JB
WHILE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS SET AT 72 MPH, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT DECELERATE. THE CONSUMER PULLED OVER, RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS STILL ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. THE DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF AS THE MANUAL SUGGESTED IN ORDER TO RESET, BUT IT DID NOT. THE CONSUMER SAID THAT HER HUSBAND EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM NUMEROUS TIMES. *SC *JB
WHINING NOISE COMING FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL. VEHICLE HAS ONLY 44,000 MILES. POSSIBLE CRASH IF DIFFERENTIAL LOCKS UP AT HIGHWAY SPEED. FORD SAYS I NEED TO REPLACE ENTIRE DIFFERENTIAL, YET NOT WILLING TO PAY PART OF THE COST. INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2002 EXPLORER.*AK
1. DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES ON THE EVENING (7:30 PM) OF 12-4-04 TO A HOLIDAY PARTY WITH JUST MYSELF AND MY WIFE. UPON ARRIVING WITHIN SECONDS OF THE LOCATION AN ANONOYMOUS DIRVER STOPPED OUR VEHICLE AND MADE US AWARE THAT THERE WAS A FIRE COMING FROM UNDER OUR VEHICLE, A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT. AS WE JUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND SAW THE FIRE A NEIGHBOR WATCHING CALLED THE LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT. WITHIN MINUTES THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND TRIED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. GAS GUAGE WILL DROP TO EMPTY AND THE DIGITAL READOUT WILL SAY THAT THERE ARE 0 MILES TO EMPTY EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A QUARTER OF A TANK LEFT. IF I WAIT A LITTLE NIT IT WILL SLOWLY GO BACK UP TO WHERE IT BELONGS. I CALLED DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY KNOW NOTHING OF THIS DEFAULT AND DON;T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT.

I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2002 FORD EXPLORER (EDDIE BAUER). AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 50-70 THERE IS SIGNIFICANT NOISE (ROARING) FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. WHEN I LET OFF THE GAS, THE NOISE GOES AWAY. CURRENTLY HAVE 60K MILES, BUT NOISE STARTED SHORTLY AFTER THE VEHICLE WENT OUT OF WARRANTY (36K). THINKING THAT IT MIGHT BE THE TIRES, I REPLACED ALL AT 40K. TIRES MADE NO DIFFERENCE. I HAVE HAD THE 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4X4 FOR LESS THAN 3 YEARS AND HAVE DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 47,000 MILES. WE BEGAN HAVING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS ABOUT 4 MONTHS. THE FIRST ISSUE WAS A WHINE IN THE REAR END THAT STARTED AT 20MPH AND GOT LOUDER UNTIL ABOUT 60MPH. NEXT THE SHIFT BETWEEN GEARS STARTED TO GET ROUGH AND THERE WAS A DELAY WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE. WHEN WE BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER THEY SAID THE FOLLOWING WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED: THE SOLENOID AND RELATED PARTS (TO FIX THE ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTING BETWEEN GEARS) AND THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL (TO FIX THE WHINING NOISE). TOTAL COST IS ABOUT $2,750. I EXPECT A TRANSMISSION TO LAST MORE THAN 3 YEARS.*AK
I HAVE A 2002 FORD EXPLORER THAT HAS HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR END. THERE IS A CONSTANT LEAK, ON THE RIGHT SIDE, THAT CAN'T EVER SEEM TO BE FIXED. THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAID IT WAS THE AXLE SEALS AND THEY REPLACED THEM. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THEY SAID IT WAS MY HUB WHICH THEY REPLACED. IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THEY SAID THAT A GROOVE HAD BEEN WORN IN THE AXLE AND THAT WAS CAUSING THE LEAK. LESS THEN A YEAR LATER THE OTHER SIDE OF THE REAR END IS LEAKING. *JB

CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION ON ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE. TRADED IT IN FOR A NEW VEHICLE. THE NEWLY PURCHASED VEHICLE DISPLAYED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS THE PREVIOUSLY OWNED VEHICLE. I PURCHASED A 2002 FORD EXPLORER THIS YEAR. I HAD NOT OWNED IT FOR VERY LONG WHEN IN AUGUST 2004 THE LIFTGATE MALFUNFUNCTIONED. I WAS EXTREMELY LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT INJURED. I REPORTED THE MALFUCNTION BOTH TO NHTSA AND TO FORD. FORD STILL HAS NOT REDESIGNED THE PARTS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THE UPPER LIFTGATE OF MY VEHICLE IS NOW CRACKED IN TWO. THE DELAY IN REDESIGNING THE PARTS AND ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE HAS EXACERBATED THE STRESS THE LIFTGATE OF MY VEHICLE WAS UNDER AND ALLOWED THE UPPER LIFTGATE TO CRACK IN TWO. I CONTACTED FORD AND THEY SAID THAT YES THERE IS A RECALL ON SPECIFIC PARTS BUT EXPRESSED THAT I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE CRACKED LIFTGATE. I AM FURIOUS AT THIS SIDE STEPPING OF THE ISSUE BY FORD.
