The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the power steering assist had failed with an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where several software updates were performed, and the braking system was repaired. The contact was later informed that the repairs that were performed would resolve the issue with the power steering. Despite the repairs, the power steering failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair of the power steering. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA Hotline for further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
While driving, without warning, the power steering went out. My 2014 Explorer became extremely difficult to steer. Luckily this happened before I made it to the end of my street. Had my wife been driving or I was traveling at higher speeds, this would have definitely resulted in an accident. We parked the car for a week, trying it intermittently, and today the steering worked again. But not knowing when or where it will happen again, and the accident risk to my family and other drivers, makes this vehicle inoperable. Given the similar complaints from other 2014 Explorer owners, this is clearly the case of a faulty part or system and Ford should issue a recall.
I was driving and there was a loud pop then the steering wheel lock up on me. The power steering assist warning light came on all at once. Lucky I turned to a stop sign and only ran off in the grass for a second. If I would have turned right me and my fiancée would probably be dead or in the hospital since the road I did not take is very busy and well none for crashes. I was in the middle of pulling out and had to forces the wheel to turn to keep us safe and able to park.
lost power steering while driving. almost hit pedestrians
The rear suspension on this vehicle stinks! I've done 2 recalls for the toe links. Now I've had to replace the rear wheel bearings. They were both bad! Niw that's done, i've a really bad(dangerous) swaying problem! The darn thing won't hardly stay on the road! I had to go to the VA for a dr appt last week in Huntington WV. On the way home i hit a downpour. I was lucky to get pulled over! The thing hydro-planed and bucked all over the road. I was only going about 40-45mph! The toe and camber are way out on the driver side rear, and the passenger side isn't much better... Those aren't the only problems. There's quite a list with this piece of junk! From the cat converters to the rear door locks, there's always been issues. I'm the second driver. I'm on disability and drive nowhere. Especially doing/driving cazy/ abusive. My dad was the other driver until he passed in 2018, and he was just an old preacher. He never hit 75mph in the thing, though he put alot of highway miles on it. I've never been above like 78 - 80mph in it... We both were/are very proactive as far as maintenence... There ought to be a lemon law...
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking coolant. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 159,000.
My 2014 explorer was just diagnostic with a failing electric racket pinon steering defect. I am unable to drive my vehicle and not able to repair it, the cost is way to much. I see that the 2011 thru 2013 have a recall on steering failure that was addressed in August of 2014. The steering locks up on me and feels like its all over the road.
Vehicle Electronic Power Steering stopped working. Power Steering Fault & Service Advanced Trac message. Also saw a day later another message that would come up with the Service Advanced Trac. It would be to Check Brake System. While researching I found that Ford had a recall for the Power Steering & Service Advance Trac for the 2011 - 2013 model years. On the NHTSA there have been quite a few people complaining about the 2014 model for Power Steering & Service Advance Trac. I didn't get a picture of the Power Steering fault, but I did get a picture of the Service AdvanceTrac with the Check Brake message. Putting it in with this as well.
My steering went out like the 2011,2012,2013, 2015, 2016 so why does the recall not cover 2014. Went out in May of 2022, and I have heard nothing since then and I reported this in June of 2022. Its been over a year so why haven't I heard anything. The electric racket pinon steering had to be replace and the scary thing is the warning light did not go off till I had no control of the steering.
My trim for my front windshield flew off while driving.
Complete loss of electronic power steering while driving on highway. Dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. Managed to hard steer off the road. No warning of any kind just died at 60Mph. Ford replaced entire electronic steering gear assembly at my cost, very expensive $2,800
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle in the driveway and shifting to park(P), the gear position indicator failed to indicate that the vehicle was in park(P). The contact turned on and turned off the vehicle several times before the vehicle operated as intended. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The dealer was contacted and the contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall for the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The contact was referred to the NHTSA to file a complaint. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
Air conditioner malfunctioned 2014 and entire dual system climate required replacement. System malfunctioned again and rear lines require replacement and compressor was reported to have malfunctioned. Power steering pump and components failed and June 2014 requiring repair. Sunroof motors failed in 2020 requiring replacement.
I was driving home from dropping my kids off at school. I was on a main road and I lost the power steering on my vehicle while I was driving, I had to turn off the road a make a few more turns to get home. When the power steering went out a light went on saying my ETS and warning my PAS was out. I did not get this warning PRIOR to losing power steering. The warning came after I had lost power. My car had to be towed to the Ford dealer in town. They informed me I needed a steering rack due to PSCM failure but they were unable to find the part and had no idea when they could fix it. I contacted a dealer 2 hours away and and was told they could get it in 1-2 weeks. I had to tow the car to them. It then sat in their lot from May 27th to August 31, 2022, waiting to get the part in. Final repair bill was $2300, on top of the towing charges and the first dealer charges to “ diagnose”. The car had 77,000 miles and is a 2014 Ford Explorer. The safety issue is my greatest concern, losing power steering with no warning, while on a busy road you need to turn off of, could have easily caused a major accident. To find out this is a known problem with Ford Explorers and nothing has been done to fix the issue across the model years affected is beyond concerning. And the fact that it took 3 months to even get the part in to fix the vehicle. And the numerous other people who have had the same issue, tells me this is something that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, before someone is gravely injured.

The dealer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel would turn in the opposite direction of the driver input. The contact stated that the steering wheel made an abnormal noise. Occasionally, the vehicle intermittently lost power steering assist functionality. The contact then stated that the following day, while her husband was reversing out of the driveway, the steering wheel seized as an unknown steering warning light was illuminated. The contact's husband drove back into the driveway and the vehicle was no longer operable. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering gear assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the dealer awaiting the parts for the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. The contact stated that the recall applies to model years 2011 to 2013 but not to their 2014 model.
Electric Power Steering unit has frozen or locked up. Occurred at slow speed in my driveway before I pulled out into traffic, fortunately. Unable to turn steering wheel at all. Disconnecting battery to reset system did not change anything. Car will have to be towed or trailered to dealer for repair.
1. power steering system. Yes. 2. The steering becomes hard to steer while it is making the noise. 3. I have not taken it to the dealer yet. 4. No. I can't afford to get it fixed yet. 5. No. Several weeks ago. The steering becomes hard to steer and makes a lot of noise when it happens. It usually corrects itself after it happens. It is getting to the point where it is happening more frequently. I am at the point where I need to get it fixed but I can't afford the repair cost.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH and entering the highway exit ramp and turning right, the power steering failed to operate properly. I was traveling from Florida to Georgia on Sunday, May 1, 2022. I left Homosassa Springs, FL at 7:00 AM. At around 3:30 PM, I was traveling on Hwy 515, Jasper, GA. The traffic was heavy on the two lane road, speed limit was between 45 mph and 55 mph. I was traveling 45 mph when my car started driving very strange. I noticed it in the steering wheel, I pulled into the Jasper Walmart parking lot and could barely steer my car and then a message came on my dashboard stating that my electrical power steering system had shut down! Good Grief, I had just come through nightmare traffic through Atlanta...what if it had happened then! I researched this problem with the Ford power steering system. I saw that NHTSA investigated this issue in 2012 and found that this power steering problem posed a legitimate safety risk. A recall was made on 2011-2013 Ford Explorers built from 5/17/2010 thru 2/28/2012 based on an intermittent connection in the electric power steering gear. I truly believe for the safety of us who are driving a 2014 Ford Explorer and those on the roadway with us, that the NHTSA needs to investigate this further. Is Ford still using the same power steering component? Since what happened to me is the same problem investigated, it appears that they are. I filed Case #[XXX] on Monday, May 2, 2022 because I think FORD is responsible for this repair. My 2014 Ford Explorer has 59,363.9 miles, driven by an older (80 on May 9) female. I am a very safe and cautious driver. I have taken excellent care of my car with consistent service requirements. This vehicle has not been abused. Your consideration for my request to investigate this issue is appreciated. Thank you [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Steering gear is grinding and showing signs of the same condition that the 2013 models were recalled to repair. Is it possible the steering equipment in the 2014 vehicle was manufactured doing the period the suspect gears were built?

The contact stated that the dealer completed the service and the recall repair however, upon picking up the vehicle and returning to his residence, the contact's father noticed that there was mechanical fluid leaking from the vehicle onto the ground. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that engine needed to be flushed and the timing chain and water pump needed to be replaced. The dealer also informed the contact that the vehicle was not drivable and he would be responsible for the cost of the repair. The contact's father declined to cover the repair as the failure was due to a technician error. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact's father then took the vehicle back to his residence. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contacted the dealer who advised that they would not cover the repair of the vehicle. The manufacturer informed the contact that they could not force the dealer to repair the vehicle and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 56,556.

The contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was driven to the residence and remained unrepaired. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.
I was pulling into a parking space turning my steering wheel to the right when steering seized up causing me to barely miss the concrete pole in the garage. The error message "Steering Assist Fault" popped up.. Turned car off left it as is since was difficult to turn wheel. When I went back to turn car off it reset itself and I was able to drive it without issues, but now very cautious in case I am driving on the road and this happens. There are two recalls 21S32 and 19S17 on my vehicle for "replacement of rear suspension toe links" It appears after researching that this defect can cause "a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash"
I have been trying to get the recall done for a year and a half only to be told the parts are not available. Just got a letter from Ford that parts were available so I called for appointment. Guess what! No parts. Year and a half and still no parts. This is a real safety issue. There have been known s accidents caused by this part failure yet after all this time I'm told no parts. Crazy!!
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 60 MPH, it was discovered that the driver’s side front window pillar trim molding had come unsecured and was nearly dislodged from the vehicle. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 37,000.
When driving the Ford Explorer 2014, the power steering seems to be faulty, when turning corners or pulling out of parking spaces the steering wheel is very hard to turn. Re: safety it is very hard to steer and very dangerous, seems like it has a mind of its own. Been inspected by a Ford Dealer in Brattleboro and have been informed that i need to replace the Rack & Pinion Assembly R&R. I have been reading different websites and have noticed that ford explorers from 2013 to 2017 apart from 2014 have been recalled due to steering issues and there are many comments and complaints re: other ford explorers 2014 owners having steering issues. No warning lights have come up on the desk board.
Hello, my vehicle as I’m driving it jolts. Now it doesn’t happen all the time but , I’ve have noticed it.
Took to dealership to fix previous recall issues and was told clunking noise when turning right is do to needing new rack and pinion system. Previous recall for this excludes the 2014 explorer but covers the 2013 thru 2017.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, the traffic control light and traction control warning light illuminated. Went to start my 2014 Explorer on and it struggled 3 times before turning on. It showed a "Check Brake System" light in the dashboard for a quick second but other than that the car seemed to be ok. I turned on my information panel to check the temperature gauge and it was normal. Kept it on that while driving my kids to school to make sure if I had to pull over I could. I immediately brought it to Hemborg Ford in Norco, CA. When I first brought it in and they popped my hood my coolant tank was below the recommended line and the service advisor immediately said it's most likely my water pump. They had my SUV for over 24 hours for testing and sure enough it's the water pump. Ford decided to install the water pumps INSIDE the engine rather than outside. This is a very dangerous move as the coolant and oil can mix which can cause a vehicle to shut down unexpectedly. Thankfully I trusted my intuition and took it in when I noticed something off and didn't ruin my engine or overall car. I was quoted $2900 to fix this issue. $2500 in LABOR and $400 in PARTS. This is because the job can take up to 14 hours to complete start to finish due to the location of the pump. This is ridiculous. We need something done. Soooooo many people are paying thousands of money out of pocket for something that shouldn't even be a problem. Look at all these complaints: https://www.vehiclehistory.com/articles/all-about-the-ford-explorer-water-pump-recalls
The Water Pump failed unexpectedly, no warnings or alarms.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while reversing, the rear-view camera image turned black. The message "Camera Currently Unavailable - Contact Your Dealer" was displayed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
The vehicle has such a strong propane smell at times.
Ford explorer had known issues with connectors under the rear passenger seats which they did a recall for certain VIN numbers. They said it only effected certain VPN which were from a specific factory in Chicago I have the same issue and my VIN is not listed and Ford and the dealership will not do anything to help fix the problem. If I pay out of pocket they want 500 dollars to fix it. The issue is Certain 2014-2016 Model Year Explorer Vehicles 2nd Row Inflatable Seat Belt - In all of the affected vehicles, the air bag light may illuminate as a result of a worn or damaged connection to the rear inflatable seat belt connector and if the light is on that means the air bags will not work.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at highway speed, the driver-side A-pillar trim clip detached from the vehicle. The contact later received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V031000 (Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. In addition, the contact stated that during inclement weather, water leaked into the vehicle from the middle interior light. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Power steering locked up while driving, a warning on the dash to have power steering serviced came up, we drove approximately one mile or less down the road to a friends house and as we were pulling in his drive the steering locked up, the vehicle could not be moved, it was inoperable and had to be towed to the Ford garage This was a very serious safety hazard, had it locked up while we were driving down the road we would had no control of the steering, and ended up where it took us. Across the center line onto on coming traffic or off the side of the road. Vey scary situation
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10-12 MPH and coming to a stop, the steering wheel seized. The manufacturer referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
my wife own's a 2014 ford explorer and we been having problems with the power steering assist fault. on 5/7/2021 we had a message display on the dash saying power steering assist fault while she was on the way to work. when this happens you have no steering and goes into manual steering and is hard to steer. she got the vehicle off to the shoulder of the road and turned vehicle off and restarted it and power steering message went away. she took it to our local ford dealer and the scanned it for the problem and they gave her a code of C1BOO and code U3000 and both codes ford manufacturer says it is a information code saying doesn't require parts or to be diagnosed or replaced. now on 2/23/2022 the same problem happened while taking my 7 yr old daughter to school and message on the dash came on saying power steering assist fault service and she had no previous warning and the steering locked up while going down the road. so we took it back to the ford dealer again and they quoted us a price of 2175 before tax to have it repaired. yes it has 90,000 miles on the vehicle but the first time we took it in it had a extended warranty. so i called ford customer complaint and they told me there was nothing they could do cuz the vin# had no recalls on it and i told them someone is going to get seriously injured if not killed. there is page after page of this problem happening to other ford explorer owners and its pretty pathetic that ford has been having this problem with the explorer's since 2011 for what i have been reading.
