HEAT FROM EXHAUST IS HEATING UP THE TIRES, CAUSING THE TIRE TREAD TO COME APART, THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE ON THE INTERSTATE, AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE. *AK *ML
PITMAN ARM BROKE BETWEEN THE STEERING SHAFT AND GEAR, CAUSING DRIVE TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A CRASH. DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO INSPECT THE DEFECTIVE PART . ALSO, LEFT BALL JOINT WERE BAD, CAUSING TIRES TO WEAR OUT.
WHILE TRAVELING 35 MPH IN FRONTAL ACCIDENT AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. DEALER AND ALSO MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED . *AK
VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION AT 45MPH. VEHICLE ROLLED OVER, AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, RESULTING IN MINOR INJURIES. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. MANUFACTURER AND DEALER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK

CRACK IN DOOR PILLAR AT LOWER RIGHT FROM DRIVERS WINDOW,APPENTRENTLY A BIG PROBLEM AS F150ONLINE SITE ON WEB HAS HUGE QUANTATY OF OWNERS ADVISING OS SIMILAR COMPLAINT. IS NTSA GOING TO REQUIRE A RECALL? SEEMS IT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO A JUST FOUND MY CRACK AND FORD HAS A BULLETIN DUE OUT ON IT.
CONSUMER WAS GETTING READY TO TURN AROUND, HAD PUT ON BRAKES, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN CAR STATRTED TO RACE. CONSUMER HAD TO PUSH HARDER ON THE BRAKES, THEN BACK TIRES STARTED SPINNING AS THOUGH THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE OFF IF FRONT BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. CONSUMER FELT THAT CAR WOULD HAVE TOOKEN OFF. CONSUMER HAD TO PUT CAR IN PARK.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD VEHICLE WAS PULLING TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND UPON TRYING TO CATCH THE STEERING WHEEL, CONSUMER ACCIDENTLY HIT THE SHIFT LEVER AND VEHICLE WENT INTO REVERSE. ALSO, WHEN STARTING UP THE VEHICLE THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND STAY ON. *AK
WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR REPLACEMENT ($260.07 TO DEALER)DID NOT SOLVE PROBLEM; RETURNED TO DEALER 12/9/99-RESPONSE; UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM-
ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO I WAS INFORMED THAT 1997 AND 1998 FORD F150 AND F250 WHERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DOOR CRACKS ABOUT 1.5 TO 2 INCHES UP FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDOW ON THE REAR PILLAR OF BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE DOORS. THIS IS DUE TO THE VIBRATION OF THE UPPER DOOR IN THE SLIPSTREAM CREATED WHEN THE TRUCKS ARE BEING DRIVEN. THE POINT OF THE CRACKING IS WHERE THE TOP OF A CURVE STRENGHTENS THE DOOR AND STIFFENS THE DOOR SO THAT WHEN THE TOP OF THE DOOR IS VIBRATING THE STRESSES CONCENTRATE AT THIS POINT AND CAUSE THE DOOR PILLAR TO CRACK. I HAVE PERSONALLY FOUND THESE CRACKS ON OVER 70 1997 AND 1998 F-150'S AND SOME 1997 F-250'S. ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT IMMEDIATELY A HAZARD THIS WILL EVENTUALLY COMPROMISE THE STRENGHT OF THE DOOR PILLAR DUE TO CORROSION. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD AND THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS AS MY TRUCK AND THE TRUCK OF EVERYONE ELSE I'VE TALKED TO IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I BELIVE THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BEFORE IT BECOMES A MAJOR HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS OR OTHER DRIVERS ON OUR NATIONS HIGHWAYS. *AK

I'M NOT SURE WHEN THESE CRACKS STARTED, BUT LOOKING AT FORD WEB SITE I SEE THAT THIS COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS MODEL. AND ATHE SMALL CRACK JUST GETS BIGGER. CONTACTED A FORD DEALER THEY SAID THEY PRBEBLE WIIL NOT COVER UNDER WARRENTY. AND THIS CRACKING IS NORMAL? PAY 29000.00 FOR VEHICLE AND CRACKING BODY PARTS ARE NORMAL? *AK
BRAKE LINE FREEZING DUE TO EXHAUST PIPE BEING IN FRONT OF WHEELS (ALONGSIDE BRAKELINE). I BOUGHT A 97 F-150 7 MONTHS AGO. I RECENTLY NOTICED THAT IT'S INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO GET OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY SOME DAYS, THE TRUCK SMELLS TERRIBLE (LIKE SOMETHING BURNT) & MY GAS MILEAGE IS AWFUL. I HAVE BEEN RELEASING THE BRAKE, THE LIGHT IS OFF, THE PEDAL IS UP, BUT THE BRAKE APPARENTLY IS STILL ON. THE TIRES & RIMS ARE ICING UP, THE BRAKE SHOES ON THAT SIDE ARE CRUMBLING. THIS CAUSES POOR BRAKING CONDITIONS. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, I HAD BEEN TOLD TO WATCH FOR THIS PROBLEM, & HAD WANTED IT FIXED. ( I WOULD RATHER NOT FIND OUT HOW BAD THIS IS BY SOMETHING OR SOMEONE. ) IN FACT, THAT IS THE REASON THAT I WAS GIVEN WHEN I WAS TOLD THAT FORD WOULD FIX IT, UNTIL THEY SAW THE MILAGE ON THE VEHICLE, THEN THEY TOLD ME, NOPE WE WONT FIX IT, YOULL HAVE TO PAY US $700 (CDN) AS A "GOOD WILL GESTURE" FROM FORD. (THIS SEEMS A LITTLE STEEP!) & ALSO THEY THOUGHT I SHOULD BRING THE TRUCK IN SO THEY CAN MAKE SURE THAT THERES NO DAMAGE TO THE WHEELS OR BRAKES. IF THE BRAKES CAN FREEZE ON,... WHAT STOPS THEM FROM FREEZING WHEN THEY ARE NOT ON?? I'M TOLD THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE THAT STOPS THIS FROM BEING AN ISSUE, BUT THE SYSTEM IS ONLY AS GOOD AS IT IS WEAKEST PART, & WHEN USING "BRUTE FORCE" TO BREAK THEM FREE, I WOULD THINK SOMETHING SOMEWHERE HAS GOT TO GIVE. IF THERE WERE SAFETY CONCERNS THAT WERE THE REASON THAT FORD WAS MAKING THE MODIFICATIONS WHILST THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER ITS ORIGINAL WARRANTY, I SHOULD THINK THESE SAFETY CONCERNS DO NOT GO AWAY ONCE THE TRUCK IS NOT ON WARRANTY. I WOULD THINK THAT THIS WOULD BE A RECALL SITUATION, NOT JUST A BULLETIN. THEY HAVE ADMITTED THAT IT IS A PROBLEM, & WERE EVEN FIXING IT IF IT WAS UNDER THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY, BUT I BELIEVE THAT THIS PROBLEM GOES MUCH FURTHER, & FORD SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR THE REPAIRS, SINCE IT IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THE VEHICLE. NO REAR AXLE BRAKES IN EMERGENCY STOP ATTEMPT, RESULTING IN CRASH. *AK
THE OUTER DOOR SKIN HAS DEVELOPED A STRESS CRACK, AND THE SHARP EDGES HAS CUT FINGERS DURING WASH. *AK
SEE PRIOR REPRT. SUDDEN FAILURE WHILE VEHICLE TRAVELING AT 35MPH CAUSED TRUCK TO SHIFT INTO "4X4 LOW RANGE" CAUSING INCREASED RPM'S AND RAPID DECELERATION OF TRUCK. COULD HAVE CAUSED ACCIDENT IF IT HAD HAPPENED ON HIGHWAY. $515.60 AMOUNT LISTED ON DAMAGES IS COST TO REPLACE MODULE. AT THIS TIME NO OTHER DAMAGE (TRANSMISSION ?) IS KNOWN TO HAVE OCCURED TO THE VEHICLE
I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN ASK WHAT PART FAILED. THEY WERE JUST CONCERNED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY!!! WHILE DRIVING UP MY DRIVEWAY, THE TRUCK SUDDENLY SLAMMED INTO 4X4 LOW RANGE. THIS CAUSED THE ENGINE RPM'S TO INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY AND BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO AN ALMOST SUDDEN STOP. THIS WAS A SUDDEN FAILURE AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT IF IT HAD OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY. *AK
CRACK IS VISIBLE VERY CLEARLY ON DRIVERS SIDE. THE CRACK IS JUST APPEARING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. DONT REALLY KNOW WHEN THE CRACKS APPEARED, HEARD ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND JUST WENT TO SEE IF IT WAS ON MY VEH.
THERE ARE CRACKS RIGHT NEXT TO THE WINDOWS ON BOTH DOORS. THEY APPEAR TO BE STRESS FRACTURES. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS NEWS REPORTS ON THIS PROBLEM.
STEERING GEAR BOX BROKE OFF OF FRAME WHILE DRIVING TRUCK OUT OF DRIVEWAY AT HOME. UNABLE TO STEER TRUCK, VERY VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION!! THE DEALER SAID THAT THE BOLTS JUST BROKE OFF NO SIGN OF WEAR ON BOLTS. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAPPENED.

STEADY TAPPING NOISE IN 5TH GEAR, WHEN ACCELERATOR PRESSED (NO VARIATION WITH SPEED INCREASE). WORSE IN COOL WEATHER. MOVING THE 4WHEEL DRIVE SHIFTER SIDE TO SIDE MODULATES NOISE. HAS GOTTEN COARSER AND LOUDER, AND SPREAD TO 3RD AND 4TH GEARS OVER THE COURSE OF LAST 14K MILES. ACADEMY FORD LED ME TO BELIEVE A FIX WAS IN PROGRESS DURING REPEATED SERVICE VISITS SINCE OCT 99, BUT ADMITTED DEC 2000 THAT FORD DID NOT WANT TO INVEST RESOURCES IN PURSUING INVESTIGATION OF THE PROBLEM OR ITS CAUSE SINCE NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE DRIVE 5SPEEDS AND HAVE REPORTED SAME. STICK SHIFT ALSO SEEMS MUSHY AT TIMES AND DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS RELATED.*AK

WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH, THE LEFT REAR WHEEL FELL OFF. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED ON THE TRUCK IN SEPTEMBER OF 1998. ALSO, MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY ON THE RECALL EXPIRED. RECALL # 98V095000 FORD/LUGS: NUTS.*AK

MY INSTRUMENTAL PANEL JUST STOP WORKING. NO GAS GUAGE, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, OIL PRESSURE, TEMP GAUGE, CHARGE GAUGE, ETC. CHECKED FUSE BUT OK. BUT LIKE NO POWER DEALER KNOWS OF NO SUCH DEFECT. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE 3 DEFECTS LISTED.....FIRST, THE POWERTRAIN, WHEN FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE IS ENGAGED AT A STOP AND AN ENGAGEMENT TIME OF AT LEAST 30SEC. TO 1MIN. IS GIVEN, WHEN I RELEASE MY BRAKE TO PROCEED THE POWERTRAIN MAKES A LOUD THUMP, THIS HAPPENS ABOUT 75% OF THE TIME....SECOND THE WASHER SPRAYERS ON THE HOOD DO NOT SPRAY THE WINDSHEILD. ONE SPRAYS WAY OFF AND THE OTHER SPRAYS NOTHING. AND THIRD THE HIGH BEAM LOW BEAM SWITCH IS DEFECTED. WHEN ENGAGED IN HIGH BEAM AND DRIVING A SHORT ACCURES AND THE LIGHTS WILL FLICKER FROM HIGH TO LOW AND COMPLETELY OFF WITH NO HEAD LIGHTS AT ALL......IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF THESE DEFECTS PLEASE CONTACT SHANE E. 1ST, TRANSMISSION, WHEN AT THE SPEEDS OF 40 AND 45, HESITATES AND WANTS TO UPSHIFT AND DOWNSHIFT, THE BEHAIVOR IS NOT NORMAL AT ALL, AND I AM MAKING AN APPT. TO GET IT FIXED. 2ND, THE HIGH BEAM/ LOW BEAM SWITCH MUST BE FAULTY, AT TIMES THE LIGHTS WILL TOTALLY SHUT OFF. 3RD WHEN REFEULING, USUALLY ON A QUARTER TANK AND LESS WHEN TAKING OFF THE GAS CAP THERE IS ALOT OF PRESSURE BUILT UP IN THE TANK. 4TH THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WILL SOMETIMES COME ON WHEN EITHER DOOR IS OPENED, I HAVE TO SHUT THE DOOR AND REOPEN IT. *AK
THE SKIN ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR HAS DEVELOPED A CRACK THAT IS 1.5 INCHES LONG. THIS CRACK WAS CAUSED BY THE WINDOW GOING UP AND DOWN. FORD WANTS THE OWNERS OF OUT OF WARRANTY VEHICLES TO PAY $250 TOWARD REPAIRS. OBVIOUS ENGINEERING FLAW. *AK
INTERIOR COURTESY LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON WHILE DRIVING.ALSO, POWER LOCK FAILED TO LOCK AFTER SHIFTING INTO GEAR. DEALER/ MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED AT THIS TIME. *AK
THERE IS A CRACK IN THE DRIVER-SIDE DOOR THAT IS COMING FROM THE INSIDE OF THE FRAME NEXT TO THE WINDOW AND IS STRETCHING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE DOOR TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE TRUCK. I HAVE CONTACTED SMITH FORD AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY MORE THAN 10 TIMES EACH. THEY EACH WANT TO TELL ME TO CALL THE OTHER. THE CRACK IS GOING TO BEGIN RUSTING SOON. I AM AFRAID THAT THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW MAY SHATTER AS A RESULT OF THIS CRACK. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL OTHER TRUCKS WITH THE SAME CRACK. ON SOME OF THESE TRUCKS, THE CRACK IS FOLDING IN ON ITSELF. IT PUTS MORE PRESSURE AGAINST THE WINDOW. IT IS MY FEAR THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN TO MY TRUCK WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE WINDOW WILL SHATTER. OIL LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AT ANYTIME WHEN DRIVING . THE OIL GAUGE WILL DROP DOWN TO LOW. *AK
CONSUMER STARTED VEHICLE, BUT DIDN'T PUT IT IN GEAR, BUT CAR TOOK OFF AND WENT INTO THE INTERSECTION. HIT THREE VANS, TWO OF THEM WERE DEMOLISHED. FROM THE IMPACT, THE THIRD VEHICLE STOPPED THE CAR . THERE WAS ONE PERSON INJURED. *AK
CRACK ON DOOR NEAR WINDOW, JUST ABOVE DOOR HANDLE MAY CAUSE METAL TO TEAR EASIER THAN IF IT WAS A SOLID PIECE. THIS CRACK CAN BE FOUND ON MOST 1997 F-150'S. WENT TO DEALERSHIP TO INVESTIGATE AND FOUND 95% OF TRUCKS ON USED CAR LOT TO HAVE THE SAME CRACK.
WHEN DRIVING 30-35 MPH, DRIVER CRASHED HEAD-ON INTO A TREE, AND THERE WAS NO DEPLOYMENT OF DRIVER'S SIDE OR PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAGS. TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP TO BE REPAIRED. *AK
CONSUMER WAS CHECKING VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIS HOME AND NOTICED THAT STEEL BELT WAS COMING FROM THE TIRE. ALSO, STEEL BELTS WERE COMIMNG FROM OTHER TWO AT 34,000 MILES. THEY WERE FIRESTONE WILDERNESS TIRES #HT10S #P23570R16. ALL FOUR TIRES WERE REPLACED. *AK DOT #W208IPT236, ALL FOUR TIRES EXPERIENCED SIDEWALL SEPARATION. *SLC
THE DOORS (DRIVER & PASSENGER) HAVE STRESS CRACKS NEXT TO THE WINDOWS. WE HAVE SPOKE TO BISON FORD REGARDING THE MATTER. WE WERE INFORMED, BY BISON FORD, THAT SINCE WE ARE PASSED OUR WARRANT (3YEARS/36000) THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY AGREED TO PAY $500.00 AND BISON FORD AGREED TO PAY 10%, LEAVING THE REMAINDER TO THE CONSUMER. THE COST TO REPAIR JUST ONE DOOR IS $486.63. THUS LEAVING $375.93 THAT THE CONSUMER WOULD HAVE TO PAY, IF BOTH DOOR WERE CRACKED LIKE OUR'S. THIS PRICE IS JUST TO WELD THE CRACKS AND REPAINT. WE FEEL THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURE'S DEFECT AND THAT THE CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED PROPERLY. I HAVE A REAL CONCERN FOR THE INTEGRITY OF THE DOOR IF WE WERE INVOLVED IN A SIDE COLLISION. I FEAR THAT THE DOOR/WINDOW WOULD NOT HOLD UP AND POSSIBLY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY. BOB HAS LOOKED AT 10 TO 15 (F150 1997 & 1998) AND HAS FOUND THAT ALL BUT ONE WAS HAD CRACK(S). WHILE WE WERE IN COLORADO RECENTLY WE WENT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THERE AND WERE SUPRISED THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THESE STRESS CRACKS.
