WATER LEAKING INSIDE THE VEHICLE. GLASS SHOP INFORMED CONSUMER THAT A WINDOW SEPARATED FROM FRAME. CONSUMER BELIEVED THAT THIS CONDITION WAS CAUSED BY A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. *AK *ML
STRUCTURAL CRACK IN DOOR AROUND WINDOW. THIS MAY LEAD TO DOOR LOCK FAILURE SINCE THE DOOR IS NOW THUMPING A LITTLE ON OPENING.
TRUCK IS USED AS FAMILY TRANSPORTATION, NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENTS. TIE ROD END BROKE TURNING IN TO A PARKING LOT. TOWED TO DEALER. FINALLY GOT IT FIXED 9 DAYS LATER, WAS TOLD THERE WAS A NATIONAL BACKORDER ON THE PART. DROVE THE TRUCK 1 DAY BEFORE THE OTHER SIDE TIE ROD BROKE - PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AT APPROX. 5M.P.H.. TOWED AGAIN TO DEALER TO HAVE SECOND TIE ROD REPLACED.

TRAILER TONGUE DISCONNECTED FROM THE BALL ON PICK UP TRUCK DUE TO MISSING SAFETY PIN, THIS RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO TRAILER DUE TO DISCONNECTION. (OHIO TRAFFIC CRASH REPORT). MJS
THERE IS A SMALL CRACK DEVELOPING ON THE LEFT DRIVERS DOOR AT THE END OF THE BELT MOLDING NEXT TO THE WINDOW ABOVE THE DOOR HANDLE. I BELONG TO THE INTERNET DISSCUSSION LIST DEDICATED TO THE LATE MODEL FORD TRUCKS AND THIS SAME DEFECT HAS BEEN FOUND ABOUT BY OVER 100 PEOPLE ON THIS LIST. I HAVE ALSO FOUND THIS DEFECT PERSONALLY ON JUST ABOUT EVERY 1997 F150 THAT I HAVE LOOKED AT IN MY AREA.
WHILE CHANGING A RIGHT REAR TIRE, AND WHEN DRIVER WAS TIGHTENING THE BOLTS TO SPECIFIED TORQUE, HE BROKE TWO SCREWS. *AK
CONSUMER CONTACTED DEALER IN REFERENCE TO MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 98R04, CONCERNING PCV SYSTEM. HOWEVER, THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL DUE TO LOCATION. RECALL ONLY INVOLVED VEHICLES IN COLD CLIMATE STATES. CONSUMER UNCELAR ABOUT RECALL MANUFACTURER SENT FOR HIS VEHICLE. DEALER REUSED TO REPLACE PARTS. FORD ADMITS VEHICLE MAY NOT STOP IN COLDER CLIMATES. *AK
THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR SHEETMETAL IS CRACKING FROM UNDER THE WINDOW TRIM NEAR THE LOWER CORNER OF THE WINDOW TOWARDS THE EDGE OF THE DOOR. INITIALLY APPEARED TO BE A DEFECT IN THE PAINT, NOW APPEARS TO BE A CRACK IN THE SHEETMETAL
MY TRUCK WAS INDEPENDENTLY DISGNOSED TO HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM THAT IS DISCRIBED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 98V161000. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD THEY SAID THAT MY VIN # IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND...I HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM ON THE EXACT VEHICLE OF THE RECALL AND JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO SAY THAT MY TRUCK IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, FORD CAN GET OFF WITHOUT FIXING THE PROBLEM. IF IT IS THAT EASY FOR THE MANUFACTURERTO GET OFF PAYING FOR SAFETY RELATED DEFECTS, THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! *AK
WHEN DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED THE VEHICLE STALLS/ SHAKES, AND THERE IS AN OIL LEAKAGE WITHIN VEHICLE. *AK
I RECENTLY SAW WERE THE NHTSA WAS LOOKING AT FORD'S WINDSHEILD WIPER CONTROL AS A POSSIBLE PROBLEM FOR THE EXPLORER & ANOTHER VEHICLE. I CAN VOUCH THAT THE F150 ALSO NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT. MY 1997 F150'S TURN SIGNAL/WINDSHEILD WIPER CONTROL WILL COME ON AT ANY TIME & AFTER USING IT WILL STAY ON.
WHILE DRIVING AT 15 MPH AND GOING AROUND A CORNER NOTICED SOME TYPE OF LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE BRAKE CALIPER BRAKE CALIPER SNAPPED IN HALF WHICH DAMAGED THE FRONT ROTORS. *AK
ALUMINUM TIRES CRACKED AT THE BEAD, CAUSING A SLOW LEAK. MANUFACTURER HAS STOPPED USING ALUMINUM AND IS NOW USING STEEL. *AK
AT ABOUT 18,000 MILES ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES THAT HAD BEEN PATCHED PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE SPLIT AT THE PATCH (ABOUT THE CENTER OF THE TREAD) SO REPLACED BOTH FRONT TIRES AT THIS TIME AS RECCOMMENDED BY FIRESTONE DEALER. THIS WAS A SLOW DEVELOPING PROBLEM.. SLOW LEAK. WITHIN 10 DAYS REPLACED ONE OF THESE. SIDEWALL SPLIT AFTER BARELY BRUSHING A CURB. WHEN I SAY BARELY BRUSHING, THOSE RUBBER NIPPLES ON NEW TIRES WERE NOT EVEN RUBBED OFF. ABOUT APRIL OF 2000 I SUFFERED A HIGH SPEED BLOWOUT (65 MPH) IN ONE OF THE REAR TIRES. TOTAL MILEAGE ABOUT 23000. STILL A LOT OF TREAD LEFT ON THE REAR TIRES AND FRONT ONES LIKE NEW... I CHOSE TO REPLACE ALL 4 AT THAT TIME DUE TO FEARS FOR MY SAFETY. DEALERS CLAIMED ALL PROBLEMS WERE ROAD HAZARDS AND NOT UNDER ANY WARRANTY. I AM 48 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING SINCE AGE16. MANY OF THOSE YEARS WERE ON THE ROAD SALES WITH AS MUCH AS 55000 MILES/YR. I HAVE NEVER... REPEAT NEVER HAD TO REPLACE A TIRE BEFORE THE TREAD WORE OUT.( DOT NUMBER: W208 TIRE SIZE: P235 70R16 )
BOTH DOORS DEVELOPED CRACKS IN THE OUTER BODY PANELS AT THE LOWER BACK SIDE OF WINDOW . I WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT IT WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT HE COULD NOT FIX PROPERLY WITH OUT A SUBSTANTIAL COST TO ME.
ORIGINAL MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT ON A 1997, FORD, F150, TIRE SIZE P23570R16 WITH 28,000 MILES ON THEM. TWO OF FOUR TIRES DEVELOPED SPLITS BETWEEN THE TREAD. ALSO ONE OF THE TWO TIRES REPLACED DEVELOPED SPLITS. *AK GENERAL 550 AMERI AS BW TIRES, DOT NUMBER A308443088 AND A308443286, CONSUMER ALSO HAD TWO FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES ON THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE, ISZE P235/70R16, CONSUMER STATES THESE TIRES HAD AN AGRESSIVE TREAD, THESE TIRES WERE PURCHASED 19-OCT-1998. *SLC
FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT TIRES P235/70R16 CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE WHILE DRIVING, AFTER THE TIRES WERE REPLACED THE VEHICLE EXPEREINCED NO FURTHER VIBRATION, CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT. NLM *TS
REAR U-JOINT WENT OUT. ONE REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED DUE TO RUST; THERE WAS NOT LUBRICANT. *AK

HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST...FOR NO REASON THE ENGINE WILL ACT AS THOUGH IT HAS A "MISS." IF TRYING TO PULL OUT, TRUCK WILL SHUTTER AND SOMETIMES DIE. THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURED ONCE BEFORE AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE #8 SPARK PLUG. 10,000 MILES AHVE PASSED AND THE ENGINE IS STARTING TO SHOW SIGNS OF DOING IT AGAIN. *AK
SPARE TIRE WHEEL MOUNT CABLE FAILED RESULTING IN SPARE TIRE FALLING OFF OF VEHICLE. MJS
IN MAY 99 HEARD RATTLE FROM LEFT REAR. FOUND SPRING CLAMP MISSING BUSHING, NO BIG DEAL. BUT DID NOTICE BOTTOM LEAF WAS KICKED OUT ON AFT END (AND KICKED IN OF FWD END) APPX 1/4 TO 3/8". WHILE DEALER REPLACE LUGS: NUTS ON RECALL SAID LEAF SPRING NO BIG DEAL. I WRAPPED LOOSE CLAMP IN TAPE TO STOP RATTLE. NOW IN 11/99 WHILE WASHING CAR I NOTICED LOWER LEAF IS KICKED OUT CONSIDERABLY FARTHER, NOW MEASURING A FULL 1". I HAVE CONTACTED FORD CAC, AND THE DEALER WILL PROBABLY INSTALL A KIT PER SB99-6477. HOWEVER, I VIEW THIS AS A VERY BIG PROBLEM/SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE FORD TSB KIT ONLY REPLACES THE EXISTING CLAMP FOR THE TWO UPPOER LEAFS. THE LOWER LEAF IS "ADJUSTED" BACK INTO PLACE. INTERNET RESEARCH SHOWS NUMEROUS PEOPLE WITH SAME COMPAINT. THIS IS NOT A SATISFACTORY SOLUTION. IN MY CURRENT SITUATION THE LOWER LEAF, AT A 1" AFT KICKOUT, IS CONTACTING THE FWD INSIDE AND AFT OUTSIDE U-BOLT. THERE CAN BE NO OTHER OUTCOME TO THIS THAN FOR THE SPRING TO EXERT ENOUGH FORCE OVER TIME TO WEAKEN BOTH U-BOLTS TO THE POINT OF FAILURE. IN MY CASE I'LL BE WATCHING LIKE A HAWK. HOWEVER WERE IT NOT FOR THE INITIAL RATTLE I DOUBT THAT I WOULD HAVE EVER SEEN THE PROBLEM UNTIL AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE WHEN MY AXLE FELL OFF. I'VE BEEN HAPPY WITH THE TRUCK AND FORD IN GENERAL UNTIL NOW, BUT I FEEL LIKE THEY NEED TO WAKE UP AND ADDRESS THIS. LOOKING AT CHEVROLET TRUCKS THEY HAVE WHAT SEEMS TO BE A BETTER DESIGN PHILOSOPHY; THE CHEVROLET TRUCK HAS "SQUARE" U-BOLTS, THREADS DOWN , WHICH STRADDLE THE LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLIES WITH CLOSE TOLERANCE TO KEEP THE STACK TOGETHER ON TOP OF AXLE. FORD'S DESIGN HAS THE U-BOLTS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SPRING STACK, THREADS UP, AND RELIES ON THE COMPRESSION FORCE TO KEEP THE STACK TOGETHER INSTEAD OF THE U-BOLT ITSELF. I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK AT THIS ISSUE; OVER TIME AS THESE TRUCKS ACQUIRE MORE MILEAGE THERE MAY BE SOME U-BOLT FAILURES. *AK

ALL MY FORD TRUCKS HAVE DONE THE SAME THING,JUST THIS TORQUE CONVERTER WENT A LITTLE EARLY,WILL FORD EVER FIX THESE PROBLEMS AND OUR THEY DANGEROUS?
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED DUE TO A STUCK THROTTLE. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION. *AK
WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE DEALERSHIP IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. *JB OTHER VEHICLE'S WERE DAMAGED DURING THE FIRE AND ONE PERSON WAS BURNED ON THE ARM WHILE TRYING TO CONTAIN THE FIRE WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. THE CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE DAMAGES. *NM
VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER RECALL FOR THE WHEEL LUGS: NUTS AND BOLTS ON 11-11-98. ON 5-6-99, THE LEFT REAR TIRE SEPARATED FORM THE VEHICLE. THE OWNER CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DECLINED TO REPAIR VEHICLE BECAUSE THE CONSUMER HAD THE TIRES ROTATED. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK
BRAKE SENSOR FAILED CAUSING LOSS OF BRAKES. MJS
THE CRACK IS GROWING DAILY AND WILL EVENTUALLY DAMAGE THE DOOR SO THAT IT CANNOT BE OPENED IN AM EMERGENCY. *AK
COOLANT LEAKS THROUGH TIMING CHAIN COVER; WIPERS COME ON UNEXPECTANTLY WHILE IN OFF POSITION.
DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH RAN INTO TRAILOR, AND THEN WENT UPINTO AN ENBANKNENT. DUAL AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, CAUSING SOME HEAD INJURIES TO DRIVER. *AK
FRONT HUBS WORK INTERMITTENTLY WHEN IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE. TOOK TO DEALER AND HE SAID THAT SINCE THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM (WOULDNT WORK FOR ME ON GRASS), THAT THEY STATED THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM, BUT IF YOU HAVE ONE TO CALL A TOW TRUCK IF YOU GET STUCK AGAIN. ALSO ANOTHER PROBLEM--SPARE TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY WERE REPLACED BY CHARAPP WITH WRONG DIAMETER TIRE AND WHEEL. DEALER DID NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS SIZE SPARE TIRE BECAUSE IT WAS A DIFFERENT SIZE THAN THE ORIGINAL TIRES ON THE TRUCK. THIS MAKES NO SENSE FOR THEM TO GIVE ME THIS SPARE WHEN THEY ADMIT IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD.. *AK
WE'VE HAD DIFFICULTY WITH INSTALLING OUR CENTURY 2000 STE CHILDREN'S CAR SEAT IN OUR FORD F150 SUPERCAB PICKUP TRUCK. FOLLOWING ALL INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOTH CENTURY'S MANUAL AND THE FORD MANUFACTURER'S MANUAL... WE'VE FOUND THEM FORD LACKING IN INFORMATION ABOUT INSTALLING OF OUR REAR FACING CHILD'S CAR SEAT. FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS, WE PLACED THE SEAT REAR FACING IN THE MIDDLE BACK SEAT. WHILE THE SEAT DOES NOT MOVE AT ALL SIDE TO SIDE... THERE IS DEFINITELY TOO MUCH MOVEMENT VERTICALLY WOULD WE BE INVOLVED IN A CRASH. WE HAVE TALKED WITH TENNESSE FORD MOTOR COMPANY IN JOHNSON CITY, TN WHOSE ONLY RESPONSE WAS TO TALK TO A STATE TROOPER. WHERE CAN WE FIND INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROPER INSTALLATION OF A CONVERTIBLE CAR SEAT IN OUR BELOVED FORD PICKUP? IF ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED, WHERE CAN WE FIND THIS INFORMATION?
THE OTHER DAY I WAS AT A FAST FOOD DRIVE UP AND MY TRUCK WOULDN'T SHIFT OUT OF PARK. I CONTACTED MY DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME HOW TO GET IT TO SHIFT.THEY SAID OH YOUR BRAKE LIGHTS PROBABLY HAVE BEEN COMING AND GOING WITH THIS PROBLEM.ALSO. THE SHIFT LOCK MECHANISM IS INTEGRATED IN THE BRAKE SWITCH, AND FORD HAS HAD SOME TROUBLE WITH WIRE FATIGUE AT THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. SO AS I WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE SHIFTLOCK I WAS UNKNOWINGLY DRIVING AT TIMES WITH NO BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS COMMENT WAS MADE DIRECTLY FROM MY FORD DEALER. I ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY TSB'S OR RECALLS FOR THE COND., HE SAID IT WAS A COMMEN PROBLEM FOR YEARS BUT FORD WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING UNLESS ENOUGH PEOPLE RATTED THEM TO SOME AUTHORITY THAT WOULD MAKE THEM CORRECT THIS WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM. HE TOLD ME THAT ON EARLIER MODLES WITHOUT SHIFTLOCK WOULDN'T EVEN KNOW THAT THEY HAD EVEN LOST THERE BRAKE LIGHTS. I LOOKED AT THE CONNECTION ON MY TRUCKS BRAKE SWITCH AND SURE ENOUGH THE WIRE HAD BEEN MADE SO SHORT FROM THE FACTORY THAT EVERY TIME YOU WOULD HIT THE BRAKE IT WAS PULLING ON IT AND ONE OF THE TWO WIRES ON MY TRUCK HAD BROKEN. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY BRAKE LIGHTS WHEN FOR TWO DAYS I THOUGHT I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY SHIFT LINKAGE. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT THEN WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN AT FAULT? IN MY OPINION FORD, I MEAN WHEN MY LOCAL DEALER IN WARSAW IN CAN TELL ME OVER THE PHONE THEN HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE U.S. FROM NOT HAVING BRAKE LIGHTS AND WERE TOTALLY UNAWARE FORD ENDANGERED MY LIFE AND I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE! I SURE HOPE THEY SAVE A BUCK IF MY DEALER KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, THEN SO DOES FORD. IT'S A SAFTY ISSUE SO WHERE IS THE RECALL? THANK YOU. TONY JOHNSON.
WHILE DRIVING TRUCK ABOUT 20-25 MPH, CABLE THAT HOLDS UP THE SPARE TIRE BROKE, CAUSING THE TIRE TO COME OFF. THE INCIDENT DID NOT CAUSE A CRASH. DEALER WILL BE NOTIFIED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. *AK

MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 97S86 AND NHTSA RECALL # 97V171000/AUTO TRANSMISSION CABLE ASSEMBLY: TRANSMISSION SELECTOR SHOWS VEHICLE IS IN PARK, BUT, IN REALITY, IT IS IN REVERSE. DEALER NOTIFIED, AND INFORMED CONSUMER THAT RECALL REPAIRS WERE ALREADY DONE, AND REOCCURRING REPAIRS WOULD BE AT CONSUMER'S COST. *AK
I HAD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WHILE PASSING ANOTHER CAR. AFTER PASSING, THE ACCELERATOR WAS STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE. I TRIED PRESSING THE BRAKES, AND THAT DIDN'T WORK. I TRIED TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, AND I ACCIDENTLY PUT IT IN EITHER PARK OR REVERSE AND THEN THE TIRES SQUEALED. I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (AVOIDING RUNNING INTO A SCHOOLBUS), AND PUT IT IN PARK AND PUT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ON. THE PEDAL WAS STILL ALL THE WAY DOWN AT FULL THROTTLE. I REACHED DOWN WITH MY HAND AND PULLED THE ACCELERATOR UP TO 'UNSTICK' IT. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE FLOOR MAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS, OR THAT A FLOOR MAT IS CAPABLE OF HOLDING THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN AT FULL THROTTLE. THE FORD DEALER IS CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEM, BUT AFTER 1.5 DAYS THEY SAY THAT THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING. BUT, THE FORD DEALER MANAGER HAS THE IDENTICAL TRUCK, AND SAID THAT THIS HAPPENED TO HIM ALSO, BUT HE JUST THOUGHT IT WAS THE FLOOR MAT. I TOLD HIM TO DEMONSTRATE HOW THAT COULD HAPPEN, AND I THINK HE WILL TOMORROW IF THEY DO NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. HE ALSO SAID THAT HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR AS FAR AS THE 'SUDDEN ACCELERATION' COMPLAINT. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, FIRE CAME UP FROM BETWEEN THE CAB AND BED OF TRUCK. FIRE INVESTIGATORS CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW IN THIS MODEL TRUCK WHICH ALLOWS DEBRIS TO ACCUMULATE UNDER THE SHIELD WHICH THEN IGNITED, AND THEN IGNITED THE SILICONE SEALER ON THE SHIELD WHICH ALLOWED THE FIRE TO IGNITE THE BACK SEAT.

NOW THE UPPER PART OF ENGINE GOING BAD HAD TO PAY 1000.00 FOR EXTENDED WARRENTY BECAUSE WHEN YOU REBUILD THE ONE PART OF AN ENGINE THE OTHER TENDS GO BAD WITHIN A FEW MONTHS . I OFFERED TO PAY EXTRA FOR THE NEW ENGINE THEY WOULD NO LET ME GET ONE NOW MY TRUCK WILL BE BACK IN THE SHOP ONCE MORE FOR A UPPER REBUILD BEFOR LONG.
REAR LEAF SPRINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED IN 1999. CURRENTLY, THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED AGAIN. THERE IS RECALL 98V161000. BUT FORD CLAIMED THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN. *AK
VEHICLE WAS SERVICED FOR SAFETY RECALL 98S18, FOR REAR LEAF SPRING CLIPS, HOWEVER AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF THE SPRING CLIPS, THE REAR SPRING LEAF ASSEMBLY BROKE CAUSING DAMAGE TO CONSUMERS VEHICLE WHICH RESULTED IN HAVING THE TIRE REPLACED.*TT
CONSUMER WAS ABOUT TO STOP AND WAS REARENDED BY A TRUCK. IN RETURN, CONSUMER'S VEHICLE REARENDED A THIRD TRUCK. THE SEAT BELTS DID NOT HOLD DRIVER OR PASSENGER, AND NEITHER AIR BAG DEPLOYED. *AK
