2001 FORD FOCUS SUDDENLY LOSES POWER WHEN TAKING A SWEEPING RIGHT HAND TURN. POWER LOSS MAKES POWER STEERING INOPEARBLE AND CAR COMES TO REST IN MIDDLE OF ROAD OR HIGHWAY RAMP.*AK
I HAVE A FORD FOCUS WITH ONLY 35,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS USED FOR LIGHT DRIVING, BUT MY ROTORS AND PADS ARE COMPLETELY WORN. I'VE NEVER HAD A CAR THAT HAS SUCH A BAD BRAKE SYSTEM. FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUTTING SUCH POOR QUALITY BRAKES ON A CAR. IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD. *NLM
FUEL PUMP FAILURE. TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. CREATED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT FAILED WHILE DRIVER WAS ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ONTO A BUSY HIGHWAY.*AK
2001 AND UP FORD FOCUS FUEL PUMP & GAS TANK RECALL REQUEST. THE FUEL TANK IS MADE FROM A MATERIAL THAT FREQUENTLY FLAKES OFF AND CLOGS THE FUEL PUMP VERY OFTEN. I HAVE HAD 3 FUEL PUMPS REPLACED ALREADY, AND MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 21,000 MILES. DUE TO THE INFERIOR DESIGN OF THE TANK AND FUEL PUMP, THE PUMP CLOGS TOO EASILY, THEN BURNS OUT LEAVING THE CAR STRANDED. THE DESIGN OF THE PUMP HAS A FINE MESH SCREEN BEFORE THE LARGER SCREEN SO THE LARGE MESH SCREEN IS SIMPLY USELESS! THE SMALL SCREEN CLOGS UP FROM LARGE FLAKES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT BY THE LARGE SCREEN IF THE PUMP HAD NOT BEEN DESIGNED BY RETARDS.*AK
I OWN A 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3 WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WILL STALL OUT IN MODERATE TO HARD RIGHT OR LEFT HAND TURNS (IE ON OR OFF RAMPS) I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE ONCE DUE TO INSTANT LOSS OF POWER/WEIGHT TRANSFER ANOTHER TIME I WAS LIGHTLY REAR ENDED BUY A MOTORIST BEHIND ME. THIS PROBLEM IS DUE TO WHAT I HAVE FOUND TO BE A FUEL PUMP/TANK ISSUE. MY CAR HAS 39,000 MILES ON IT AND FORD DOESN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING TO REPAIR THIS VERY UNSAFE CONDITION. *NLM
MY WIFE OWNS A 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3 WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. IT NOW HAS ALMOST 29,000 MILES AND THE FRONT BRAKES ARE STILL SQUEAKING AND GRINDING ALMOST WITH EVERY USE. IT HAS BEEN TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED IN JULY 2001. THEY HAVE MADE 4 REPAIR ATTEMPTS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE BRAKES STILL MAKE A LOT OF NOISE AND BRAKE DUST. THE PADS AND ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AND VARIOUS OTHER BRAKE PARTS ALSO. THE SERVICE MANAGER (RICHARD) AT ADAMS FORD IN BELTON, MO INFORMED ME TODAY THEY WOULD DO NO MORE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. HE LAUGHED AND SAID FEEL LUCKY YOU DON'T OWN A MERCEDES BECAUSE THEIR BRAKES SOUNDED LIKE A DUMP TRUCK STOPPING. *JB
WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. ANOTHER VEHICLE JUMPED IN FRONT OF THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE, AND CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO HIT THE VEHICLE. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. *AK *CB *JB
MY AUTOMOBILE STALLED AND THEN THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN OREGON AND HAILEY, IDAHO. THE CAUSE WAS DETERMINED TO BE A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. THE AUTO WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE OF FORD FOCUS FUEL PUMPS EXISTED BECAUSE THE DEFECT WAS SO WIDESPREAD. *TT
VEHICLE LOST STEERING WHILE TURNING RIGHT. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. PLEASE PROVIDE DETAILS.*AK
DT CONSUMER STATES THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE BATTERY CABLES AND THE RECALL REPAIRS WAS DONE ON MAY 21, 2003, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLED AND IT CAUSED ANOTHER VEHICLE TO REAR END CONSUMER'S VEHICLE ON OCTOBER 12, 2005. CONSUMER STATED THAT HER HUSBAND CHECKED THE VEHICLE AND THE BATTERY CABLES BURNED OUT AND MELTED AGAIN, AND THAT IS THE SAME THING HAPPENED AS STATED IN THE RECALL. CONTACTED FORD, THEY SAID TO BRING VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION, BUT THAN LIKELY IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. *AK

RELATED TO NHTSA ACTION #EA02022 2001 FORD FOCUS WITH 38,000 MILES; FUEL STARVATION, SOMETIMES TO THE POINT OF STALLING. OCCURS WHEN MAKING LONG RIGHT TURNS (INTERSTATE ON & OFF-RAMPS) - PREVENTS ME FROM MERGING SAFELY INTO TRAFFIC. PROBLEM IS MOST SEVERE WITH LESS THAN 1/2 A TANK OF GAS. *NLM
WHILE MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY THE CAR SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND HAD NO WAY TO ACCELERATE AND CAUSING A HAZARD BY SLOWING TRAFFIC AND HAVING TO GO TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. *JB
WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND DID NOT RESTART. *JB
WE PURCHASED OUR 2001 FORD FOCUS ZX3 IN OCTOBER OF 2001. DURING THE FIRST YEAR WE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES. THESE PROBLEMS INCLUDED THE BRAKES GRABBING AT VERY LOW SPEEDS, SQUEALING AND NOISE ISSUES, AND LOW PERFORMANCE BRAKING. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP OF PURCHASE SEVERAL TIMES FOR REPAIR. THE DEALERSHIP FINDS AND REPAIRS THE PROBLEM EVERY TIME WITHOUT CHARGE. THE REASON FOR THIS COMPLAINT IS THAT ON MAY 13TH 2003 THE BRAKES TEMPORARILY FAILED TO ENGAGE MAKING THE VEHICLE UN-SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP'S CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER AND I AM WAITING FOR A RESOLUTION. I WANTED TO RELAY A MESSAGE TO THE NHTSA NOW DUE TO THE FACT THAT SEVERAL REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE AND SOMETHING OTHER THAN A REPAIR SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AT AN EARLIER TIME. *JB
ON 11-12-2001 I PURCHASED A NEW FORD FOCUS AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. ON 5-13-03, THE FRONT WHEELS BEGAN TO MAKE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THE BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE CAR HAD ONLY 18411 MILES ON IT AND WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, THEY SAID THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE SHOT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I COMPLAINED THAT NO VEHICLE BRAKE SYSTEMS SHOULD FAIL THAT EARLY AT THAT LOW MILEAGE BUT THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT ASSIST ME IN ANY WAY, INSTEAD CHARGING ME $469.57. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MISUSED AND WAS DRIVEN UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS BY MATURE DRIVERS. THIS YEAR/MODEL FORD FOCUS WAS MANUFACTURED POORLY AND I HAVE READ OF NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VEHICLE. THERE WAS A PROBLEM WHEN FORD BUILT THE CAR AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. *LA
THE SMALL PLASTIC CLIP ON THE FUEL PUMP BROKE, WHICH RESULTED IN A FUEL LEAK. VEHICLE WOULDN'T START. *NLM
THE FUEL PUMP IN MY 2001 FORD FOCUS SE (2.0 SPI ENGINE) FAILED WHILE DRIVING. THIS RESULTED IN LOSS OF POWER AND LIMITED VEHICLE CONTROL. MY VEHICLE HAD 39000 MILES ON AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. FORD REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY SUPPORT FOR THIS DANGEROUS MECHANICAL FAILURE.*AK

VEHICLE STALLS AT FREEWAY SPEEDS - RESTARTS POORLY AND RUNS ROUGH. HAPPENS WHEN GAS TANK ABOUT 1/4 FULL (ABOUT 7 GALLONS FILLS TANK. VEHICLE THEN RUNS OK. *JB
2001 FORD FOCUS - STALLS IN CORNERS AND GOING UPHILL- JUST LOOSES POWER AND DIES. SOUNDS LIKE FUEL PUMP PROBLEM THAT MANY OTHER FOCUS OWNERS HAVE HAD. *NLM
ALL FOUR TIRES LOST AIR. THE CONSUMER HAD TO CONSTANTLY PUT AIR IN THE TIRES, WHICH ALSO CAUSED PREMATURE WEAR. *JB

VEHICLE STALLED WITH NO WARNING AND WOULD NOT START BACK UP FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES, IT SEEMED AS IF THE ACCELERATOR WAS NOT PUMPING BECAUSE GAS SEEMED TO NOT GET TO THE RIGHT PLACE. I WAS ALSO DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED WITH MY FOOT ON ACCELERATOR AND THE GAUGE WENT DOWN. IT ALSO HAPPENED AT A LOWER SPEED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLES REAR WINDSHIELD SHATTERED. *NLM
THE VEHICLE STARTED SMOKING UNDER THE DASHBOARD. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLES REAR WIRING HARNESS FAILED. *NLM
I HAVE A 2001 FORD FOCUS ZTS. WITH A 1/2 TANK OF FUEL OR LESS, MY CAR STALLS IN MID ACCELERATION, WHILE GOING AROUND CURVES, DUE TO WHAT FEELS LIKE LACK OF FUEL. I HAVE HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE ONCE THE CURVE IS PASSED, I DO NOT IMMEDIATELY GET FUEL BACK TO THE ENGINE. I HAVE AVOIDED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS. THIS HAS BEEN A RECURRING ISSUE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, BUT IT'S GETTING WORSE. IT ORIGINALLY STARTED WITH A 1/4 TANK OR LESS. NOW IT'S A 1/2 TANK OR LESS. IT'S STARTING TO WORRY ME. THIS HAPPENS AT NORMAL DRIVING SPEEDS AND IS MUCH WORSE WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC FROM AN OFF-RAMP. *JB
I HAVE A 2001 FORD FOCUS WHICH IS STALLING IN TRAFFIC. THE MOTOR ACCELERATES WHILE DRIVING, MAKING THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT HARD WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE DROPS SPEED WHILE DRIVING WITHOUT ANY INDICATIONS. VEHICLE STALLS IF THE AIR CONDITIONER IS TURNED ON WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS 75 DEGREES OR MORE. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON WITH THE CAR THREE WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR MAY, 2002. AND TO DATE, APRIL 19, 2003, IT CONTINUES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE DASH LIGHTS BLINKING WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE CAR TO STALL IN TRAFFIC WHEN TEMPERATURES ABOVE 75 DEGREES. DURING THE WINTER MONTHS THE CAR DID NOT HAVE STALLING PROBLEM, ONLY THE LIGHTS BLINKING. SINCE THE WEATHER IS GETTING WARMER, THE VEHICLE IS STALLING WITH THE ABOVE PROBLEMS AGAIN. *JB
TIRE PROBLEM, POSSIBLE REAR BEARING PROBLEM, POSSIBLE ALIGNMENT PROBLEM, EGR REPLACED- ENGINE MISFIRING IS BEGINNING TO REAPPEAR
STARTING AT ABOUT 39,000 MILES (OCTOBER, 2002), WHENEVER MY CAR HAD A QUARTER TANK OR LESS OF GAS, THE CAR WOULD START CHOKING AND FEEL LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL. IF I STOPPED AND LET THE CAR SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, IT WOULD BE OK FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THEN IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. THIS CONTINUED AFTER I HAD THE FUEL FILTER REPLACED, AND A MECHANIC COULDN'T FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. IT HAS HAPPENED AT MANY SPEEDS, BUT MOST OFTEN WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. TODAY, AT 49,000 MILES, I HAVE MORE THAN HALF A TANK OF GAS, GOING ABOUT 35 MPH, AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED. *NLM
WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. *JB
2001 FORD FOCUS, HAD TO REPLACE FUEL PUMP (THE CAR JUST DIED) WITH A LITTLE OVER 40,000 MILES ON CAR; TOLD AT THE TIME THE REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED AND WAS NOT A RECALL ISSUE; WENT ON LINE AND DID A SEARCH FOR "PROBLEMS WITH FORD FOCUS"; FOUND SEVERAL SIMILAR COMPLAINTS; HAD FUEL PUMP REPLACED AT MY OWN EXPENSE AT PACIFIC COAST FORD IN FEDERAL WAY, WA; ALSO, BRAKES HAVE ALWAYS SQUEAKED. *LA

FOCUS ZX3 HAS 20,000 MILES, STEERING COLUMN LOCKED, ENTIRE IGNITION LOCKED, COULDN'T TURN KEY, HAD TO BE TOWED AND TOOK A DAY TO REPAIR. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. *JB

THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO HONOR THE RECALL FOR THE REAR WHEEL BEARING 01 I 017 000 AND THE BATTERY CABLE 02 V 288 000. *JB
I PURCHASED A NEW FORD FOCUS IN JULY OF 2001. MY WIFE USES THE CAR TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY TO AND FROM WORK. WE HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 18 MONTHS AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE LAIRD NOLLER DEALERSHIP IN LAWRENCE FOR THE 30,000 CHECK UP WITH 33,000 MILES ON THE CAR. AFTER SPENDING $300 FOR THE CHECK UP, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS NEED TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH TWO MECHANICS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE ROTORS SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED ON A CAR THAT IS DRIVEN PRIMARILY ON THE HIGHWAY SINCE THERE IS NOT A LOT OF STOP AND GO DRIVING. THERE A DOZENS OF LISTINGS ON THE INTERT AND THE NHTSA WEBSITE OF THE SAME COMPLAINT ON THEIR FORD FOCUS VEHICLES. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT FORD PUTS THIN ROTORS ON THE FOCUS TO BEGIN WITH SO THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED VERY EARLY. I WAS ALSO LEARNED FROM AN EMPLOYEE AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE PERSON THAT PERFORMED THE SERVICE ON OUR FOCUS HAS HAD TROUBLE MEETING HIS QUOTA OF UPSELLING REPAIRS ON CARS THAT COME IN FOR THEIR CHECK UP. AFTER PICKING UP THE CAR, THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD WAS SHAKING AND THE FRONT TIRES WERE MAKING NOISES. WHEN WE BROUGHT THE CAR IN IT WAS FINE , AFTER WE PICKED IT UP IT SOUNDED HORRIBLE. WE CALLED BACK UP TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WERE TOLD TO DRIVE IT FOR A FEW DAYS AND IT SHOULD BE FINE. AFTER WAITING THE TWO DAYS, THE BRAKE PADS BEGAN TO GRIND INTO THE ROTORS AND THE CAR DID NOT DRIVE WELL AT ALL. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH FORD AND WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME AND THAT I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. FORD KNOWS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ROTARS THEY ARE USING ON THE FOCUS, BUT IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I AM WORRIED THAT ARE NOT OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR THAT MAY MAKE IT UNSAFE. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND AM WORRIED ABOUT DRIVING THEM AROUND IN THE CAR. I BELIEVE THAT WITH THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS I HAVE SEEN, FORD SHOULD BE TOLD TO INITIATE A RECALL ON THE ROTARS.

IT IS A 2001 FORD FOCUS WITH 50,000 MILES. THE ENGINE BEGAN STALLING. WE TOOK IT TO OUR DEALERSHIP AND THEY INDICATED THAT WE HAD NOT DONE ANYTHING WRONG AND THAT IS WAS JUST A DEFECTIVE ENGINE. IT IS GOING TO COST US $1,700 TO FIX. ACCORDING TO RESEARCH I HAVE DONE, MANY INVESTIGATIONS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED AND COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN MADE. *NLM
REAR TIRES BALD AT 20,000. I HAVE REPLACED 4 TIRES AND NEED TO REPLACE 2 MORE. I HAVE 42,000 MILES ON MY CAR. I HAVE ROTATED THE TIRES ALL ALONG, BUT THEY ALWAYS END UP WEARING QUICK IN THE REAR. FOR EXAMPLE ONE SET OF TIRES HAD GREAT TREAD WHEN THEY WERE ROTATED TO THE BACK WITH ABOUT 15,000, THEN AT 20,000 THEY WERE BALD!!! (LIKE SOMETHING IN THE REAR CHEWED THEM UP) CAR JUMPS SIDE TO SIDE WHEN HITTING MINOR BUMPS IN ROAD AND ON HIGHWAY, IT FEELS LIKE CAR DOESN'T HAVE GOOD CONTROL BECAUSE OF THIS. DEALERSHIP AND FORD REP. SAY TIRES ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OF COURSE AND CLAIM NOT TO FIND ANY OTHER PROBLEMS. THEY BLAME IT ON THE DRIVER STYLE. FUNNY THIS HAS NEVER EVER HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE, INCLUDING MY FIRST FOCUS LEMON I HAD FOR 25,000 MILES (THEY REPLACED MY FIRST FOCUS FOR US FOR FUEL PROBLEMS THEY COULDN'T FIX) I KICK MYSELF FOR AGREEING TO EXCHANGE FOR A NEW FOCUS. NEVERTHELESS, IT REALLY SEEMS LIKE AN ENGINEERING/DESIGN FLAW OR SOMETHING ELSE IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE THAT IS MAKING THESE TIRES WEAR SO FAST. *JB
THE REAR WHEEL BEARING FAILED AND CAUSE THE WHEEL TO WOBBLE. *NLM
THE ROTORS AND PADS HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A LOW MILEAGE. *JB.....*AK
AS A RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT I MUST HAVE BOTH HEAD LIGHT ASSEMBLIES AND THE FRONT BUMPER REPLACED ON MY 2001 FOCUS. MY INSURANCE COMPANY INSISTS THAT IT WILL ONLY PAY FOR AFTER MARKET PARTS, NOT OEM PARTS. FURTHER, THEY TELL ME THE AFTER MARKET PARTS CARRY NO CERTIFICATION THAT THEY ARE EQUAL TO THE OEM PARTS. I WOULD NOT FEEL SAFE USING PARTS THAT ARE SAFETY RELATED THAT CANNOT BE CERTIFIED TO BE OF THE SAME KIND AND TYPE AS ORIGINALLY INSTALLED. DOES NHTSA HAVE A POSITION OF THE USE OF NON-OEM SAFETY PARTS IN THE REPAIR OF AN AUTOMOBILE? *JB
