NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ford Focus. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Ever since purchasing this vehicle 2nd hand, it has had "Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low" and "Lost Communication with Fuel Pump Control Module" intermittently. Attempted to fix with a mechanic, had fuel control module replaced. It occurred again, so had fuel pump replaced. It still randomly stalls out, leaving us in danger on the roadway. Pulling into traffic can be dangerous, since a stall-out would guarantee a collision with on-coming traffic. Engine light stays on when it stalls, eventually will start again, and light disappears. This has been an ongoing problem over the last 2 years. Vehicle can only be used for local driving in the event of being stranded, sometimes on a monthly basis. Recently now, the Transmission Control Module has stopped working and needs to be replaced (as of 3/6/23). Mechanic says these parts are on backorder for 1+ years.
I recently got this car, seen there was a recall so I took it to get fixed at the dealership. Ever since it got fixed, my car has lost power and the transmission won't shift correctly making me unable to drive.

I went to pull into traffic and when I pushed on the gas to hurry it just did a jumping stuttering type of thing. I almost got hit, it’s like it just doesn’t want to engage right away and I don’t know if it’s the clutch or transmission. Hills are also an issue, just jerks and jumps trying to go into a gear. I was told this car would not have the same problem as the previous years but I am very upset and lucky I didn’t get killed. Thank you my number is [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the vapor management valve, part number: BV6Z9D289E, needed to be replaced. However, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V515000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
Engine light just went on
I was driving home from my mother's home and the car swerved and was hard to keep control of. The next day I was headed to work and the warning came on that the transmission was too hot. I let it cool down for 15 minutes and the message said it was safe to drive, but the process repeated 4 times.i called for tow to the mechanic and he said it was a transmission control module. The part was on backorder for se eral weeks. When they tried to do the repair it did not work.
Upon stopping to fill up with gas once the gas tank is either full or not all the way full, the car has trouble starting and will stall. The vehicle will begin to run after pressing the gas pedal multiple times with the ignition still on. The check engine light is illuminated. I was made aware of a previous recall that I feel my car should’ve been involved in. The approximate mileage is 95000.
Vehicle stalls after filling tank up with gas either to a full tank or less than a full tank. Vehicle throws code for EVAP issue as well as manufacturer control. Took to a mechanic where I was told there were multiple issues with the fuel system that needed to be replaced.
Dual clutch transmission needs replaced and my vehicle only has approximately 44,500 miles on it. Mechanics including Ford mechanics say that it is no fault of my own but a common problem with the 2017 Ford Focus transmission. The automatic transmission loses power, hesitates and shakes between gears sometimes, especially on inclines. It also when going from reverse to drive which started yesterday 03/03/2023 sometime after Ford Services inspected it, now sometimes the vehicle still drives in reverse after shifting to drive until i press my brakes, look to see it is in drive, which it is, then, press the gas pedal again and it moves forward finally as it should. This occurrence is random but mostly an issue when having to reverse on a slight incline out of a parking position, which makes it more dangerous. This is not a one time occurrence but ongoing until i replace the transmission. There are also no service engine lights warning of the transmission or anything else for that matter showing there being an issue even though there is.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost automotive power, with the transmission slipping. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle seemed to return to normal functionality; however, the failure recurred and became a regular occurrence. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched and related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 14M02 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 81,058.
Try to accelerate and vehicle transmissions slips and shakes assessively. When it shifts it shakes and slips. Dangerous to move forward from a red light into a intersection. Only 37,000 miles and problem is getting worst. Dealer said it's normal but I have learned it's not and is a big issue.
Good morning this is my ford focus car VIN 1FADP3K2XHL247975 i am in Iraq I checked my car recalls and it has one reacall, But when i went to the ford dealer named Alkasid in iraq locayed in Erbil it says we won't fix it because your car warranty cancelled and what i know is that even after warranty the recall is is still available.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was jerking and then lost motive power. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated, and the transmission fault message was displayed. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the TCM and transmission shift forks A and B needed to be replaced; however, the replacement parts were on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and transferred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 38,693.
2017 Ford Focus with only 6400 miles on it - Power steering without warning turned off, and the dash displayed a "Power Steering Assist Failure - Service Required" message. The steering was difficult to manage. Was in the neighborhood when this happened, so was able to get the vehicle back to the driveway however, if this occurred in an intersection, freeway, etc risk of an accident would have been high. There was no warning prior to this happening. Reading forums, this appears to be a common issue with Ford Focus's steering, so was very surprised not to see a recall already issued on this major safety concern.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while her son was driving approximately 45 MPH, he depressed the accelerator pedal however, the vehicle failed to respond. The driver attempted to depress the brake pedal, but the brake pedal was rigid and was unable to properly stop the vehicle. The contact stated several unknown warning lights were illuminated intermittently. The driver used the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact towed the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the engine to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
I was moving my car in a gas station parking lot and went to stop the car to go in reverse and the breaks went to the floor and I pushed them about five times and still no breaks. I hit a concrete column and air bags didn't deploy and the airbag lights were blinking on and off and speedometer needle was going crazy. Officer went to assist with moving the car to a curbside and in neutral the car was trying to go forward then when it was put in park it continued to try to go forward. We were not on a hill, it was flat in the parking lot. If this would have happened on the main roads my son, nephew and myself could have been hurt and if I had hit someone else they could have been hurt as well. I know have a adjusting checking the vehicle and a mechanics shop as well. Before this happened I had absolutely no warning.
The car was driving fine but when we had to jump the car off the car would not shift in reverse and also the car was very sluggish when driving it to the dealership. The dealership confirmed that the Transmission Control Module had gone bad on the car and also notified us that this was a recurring problem on other Ford Focus and Fusion models.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that after her daughter refueled the vehicle, there was an abnormal rumbling noise detected and the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed her about the codes regarding the canister purge valve. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V515000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
Fors continues to have the same transmission issues they had in the 2011-2016 ford focus dual clutch transmission. 2017 & 2018 should’ve been recalled. I have approximately 15,000 miles on my 2017 and the car was working fine and one day it suddenly lost some forward gears and reverse leaving the car in limp mode in the middle of the an intersection after starting to drive forward on the road. The lights changed and traffic is moving across leaving me in an unsafe situation and the other drivers having cars traveling 55 nearly rear ending them. There is no warning of this failure they suddenly happen and can cause issues where you’re stuck at a light or cannot get through an intersection. I tried to bring my car in and they told me they had 80,000 focus cars ahead of me and that they wouldn’t be able to fix my car due to a chip shortage. 80,000 other ford focus with this same issue is clear to me they’ve never resolved the matter and continued allowing these unsafe cars to be on the road. If this happens on a busy freeway, intersection, or anywhere on the road its a serious issue. There needs to be a full recall on the transmissions control module, the two clutch actuators, and the shift forks. Because of the design the TCM first fails causing the actuators to rotate and sheer of the pin from the castings, causing the shift forks to come loose. The only way to fix it because of all the diat created when this happens is to replace the dual clutch, TCM, both external actuators and shift fork A and shift fork B. Of course they sold two more years of the same model they’ve previously recalled and were part in a class action settlement that requires they replace these unsafe components. I cannot be the only person to report this safety issue. It nearly caused me to get hit on the road and I’m lucky to be alive. The next person may not be so lucky. Ive only got 15,000 miles on this car it shouldn’t have any issues like this. Recall these now.
The contact’s daughter owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that after his daughter started the vehicle and attempted to shift into reverse(R) the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that the gear shift lever failed to shift into reverse(R). The vehicle was manually pushed into the intended direction and the vehicle was shifted into drive(D). The contact stated that the vehicle was vibrating and shaking while driving to an independent mechanic. The contact was unaware of any warning lights being illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The mechanic determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V845000 (Power Train). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,504.
Trans make noise shudders and rolls back ,also had car jump forward at light. For told me they know there a problem had clutch replaced twice in 2 years now out of warranty.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the vehicle failed to accelerate upon the depression of the accelerator pedal. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The dealer failed to honor the vehicle warranty and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where the engine was replaced. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V905000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 33,905. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
After a routine oil change i was driving and oil light and engine light suddenly came on. Car then begin to make knocking noise and was towed to local mechanic. Engine is stated to need replacing and car no longer driveable.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 MPH, the check engine and oil warning lights illuminated before the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine camshaft and timing chain had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 51,642.
I pulled out of my brothers driveway as I pulled out the car failed to go over 10mph and started to lurch back and forth. I almost got in an accident because of this. There was a car coming down the road and they had to swerve to miss me because I couldn’t get the car to go over 10. I promptly pulled the car over after that. The car also would go into reverse but would not move. I had the car towed to a local Ford dealer because I did not feel it was safe to drive. There were no warning lights on the car at the time of the incident. The check engine light did come on later though. The dealership said the TCM had failed and would need to be replaced but I would need to wait for the part because it’s on national factory back order. After waiting 4 months and calling Ford to complain multiple times the part finally came in. They installed the part and told me it did not fix the issue and I would need a replacement transmission. The car has not been fixed, failure date was at 87,300 miles. The car is no longer safe to drive and costs way too much for me to fix.
Check engine code shows on dash, when checked by mechanic it leads to faulty canister purge valve. The vehicle shutters and stalls intermittently.

My car only has 41000 miles on it and there is a transmission issue causing the car to move in unsafe ways, either it doesn’t accelerate to merge safely or it lurches forward sometimes even with the brake applied. My car is only 9 weeks outside the factory powetrain warranty. I don’t feel it is right I need to pay $3000 in repairs for a car with 41K miles and just over 5 years old.

Car was at highway speed and was given light input to change lanes. With light input, the engine accelerated in an uncontrolled manner, revving to maybe 5000 rpm. The driver had to slam on the brakes to counteract. Result was a rear-end collision with the car in front (Route 95 near Laurel, MD). For what it is worth, the car also gave an "overheating" alarm for the Powershift DCT transmission even though no such alarm had ever appeared previously. So first time alarm on the transmission and the following day this incident with the unintended acceleration. These could be unrelated, but could also be related. With the overheating transmission issue, the car was left sit for 10 minutes and then drove normally. Car also drove normally after the accident. No further abnormal acceleration issues.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle needed to be refueled more frequently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where various fuel system failure codes were retrieved, and it was determined that the canister purge valve, carbon canister, and fuel tank needed to be replaced. The contact was made aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V515000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 65,200.
Service engine light is on and code reader indicates the Canister purge valve is malfunctioning causing excessive vacuum in the fuel management system. Ford has recalled certain 2012-2018 Ford focus vehicles for this. Recall is 18S32. My vin is not on their list for a recall but obviously should have been. Car idles rough and after refueling is hard to start... I have to try 3 or 4 time before it starts.
Transmission stopped working at 63,777 miles. I was in a freeway when this occurred. Car had to be towed back home. Repair shop wants $8800 to put in a new transmission. Ford extended the warrantee up to 2016 models but refused to extend the 2017 model.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. While driving, the ROM is unstable and jumps from 1 to 3 then all the way to zero when pressing the brakes preparing to make a stop. The car then starts to shudder excessively and then basically shuts down in the middle of the highway. The oil and battery light would come on. I would have to quickly place the car in park, and turn the car back on. Once I turn the car on, the oil and battery light turns off and the engine light stays on until it is brought to the ford dealership. This situation has happened about four times. Each time it is an issue with a pressure sensor but when the dealership goes in to check, they don’t find anything wrong. The car had stopped in the middle of the highway multiple times, slips and jerks during the smallest acceleration, and consistently shudders when breaking or idle.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. I am requesting an investigation as to the matter at hand; this letter contains all specifics as related to the vehicle and from the time of purchase to now. The vehicle is currently not in operable conditions and it can be identified as a 2017 Ford Focus SE 4 Cylinders 2 2.0L DI DOHC 122 CID. There was a lawsuit for this car prior and there was a judgment rendered for issues with the vehicle, new issues have arisen since the lawsuit. On or about 9/19/2022 however on or about 10/9/2022 Plaintiff began experiencing issues with the car. On or about 10/16/2022 a mechanic diagnosed the car with having issues of P07A3 and P2872 and that labor would be about $600.00 not including parts. Subsequently, the vehicle is not currently running. If you request more information from me I can send it, however, please redact any sensitive information.
this car with 38k on it has a transmission failure. it was very dangerous. the car lost its reverse gear and won't stay in its forward gears. it will jump in and out of drive down to low and then to nothing. i guess this could happen at any time during owning or driving this car. you could be going 70 and the transmission could fail. it would cause a wreck that might kill many on a busy road. there are no parts for this to be fixed. some back order of the computer chip. now i have a low mile car with no way to fix it. plus, this can happen at any time. ford should look into a fix for this problem. i know that there is a recall for the 2016. it should include the 2017 as well.
Shudder upon acceleration due to faulty clutch pack. even when replaced under warranty the faulty clutch presents the same problem. Causes all kinds of UNKNOWN problems when the car fails to accelerate and/or the clutch assembly fails. Problem has been confirmed multiple times by Ford Dealer. Been inspected by the manufacturer- FORD and deemed unsafe and needing immediate repair. No warning lamps, messages, etc. Car will just do that with no warning.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Focus. The contact stated that after a routine oil change at the local dealer, while driving approximately 45 MPH, the oil warning light illuminated, and an abnormal sound was heard coming from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was inoperable and was towed to three different independent mechanics; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was then towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the oil belt and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained at the local dealer awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
