2005 FORD FREESTYLE ENGINE IDLES UP BY ITSELF. ALMOST RAN INTO SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, IT ALSO DID IT TWICE IN WHICH I WAS TRAVELING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND IT IDLED DOWN TO AN ALMOST COMPLETE STOP IN WHICH WE JUST ABOUT GOT RAN OVER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. I HAD A MECHANIC TO PLUG IN A OBD SCANNER WHICH IT DISPLAYED A CODE WHICH READ P061B, SAID INTERNAL CONTROL MODULE CALCULATION AND PERFORMANCE AND TORQUE. AFTER DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH, I FOUND THERE ARE MORE THAN 1000 PEOPLE WITH THE SAME VEHICLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THESE CARS. NHTSA NEEDS TO CONTACT FORD ABOUT RECALLING SUCH DEFECTIVE CARS. IM IN THE PROCESS OF CONTACTING THE MORE THAN 1000 PEOPLE WHO ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND ADDRESS THEM TOO A CLASS ACTION LAWYER. I OWN A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE THAT HAS BEEN ON FORDS LOT FOR 67 DAYS NOW. IT NEEDS A NEW THROTTLE BODY AND THEY ARE NOT STARTING PRODUCTION ON THEM UNTIL OCT 31ST 2009. WHICH MEANS THEY WILL NOT BE TESTED AND READY FOR INSTALL UNTIL NEXT YEAR WHICH MEANS I WILL HAVE GONE 6 MONTHS WITHOUT MY CAR WHICH I AM STILL PAYING FOR BECAUSE I JUST BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE. ENGINE STOPS WITHOUT WARNING WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. USUALLY COULD BE RESTARTED AFTER VEHICLE STOPS AND IS PLACED IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. *TR UPDATED 08/19/10*BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THEY ALSO DISCOVERED A WIRING HARNESS FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT TO THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER HAD RUBBED AGAINST ONE OF THE AIR CONDITIONER HARD LINES. THE FRICTION HAD WORN AWAY THE INSULATION ON THE HARNESS AND CAUSED THE CAM POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL TO ACT ERRATIC. ACCORDING TO THE TECHNICIAN, THE LOSS OF THE CAM POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STUTTER/STALL. ADDITIONALLY, THE LOSS OF THE CPS SIGNAL INHIBITS THE FIRING OF THE SPARK PLUGS. THE LOSS OF FIRING SIGNAL TO THE SPARK PLUGS CAUSED RAW FUEL TO EXIT THE ENGINE DIRECTLY TO CATALYTIC CONVERTERS, DAMAGING THEM PERMANENTLY. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT INSERTING RAW FUEL INTO AN OPERATING CATALYTIC CONVERTER, AT SOME TEMPERATURE MEASURED IN THE HUNDRED DEGREE CELSIUS WOULD BE A FIRE HAZARD. UPDATED 08/23/10 THE EVENT HAPPENS RANDOMLY. AFTER FIRST OCCURRENCE, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FORD DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. RESULT WAS "NO FAULT FOUND." NO ADVICE FROM DEALER TO REMEDY PROBLEM OR REFRAIN FROM OPERATING THE VEHICLE. AFTER SOME NUMBER OF OCCURRENCES WHILE TRAVELING OUT OF TOWN, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WAS TURNED ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FORD DEALERSHIPS. FIRST DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN SYMPTOMS AND REPROGRAMMED THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER FURTHER OCCURRENCES, VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALERSHIP. THERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS INSTRUCTED NOT TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AND TO READ ENGINE CODES. DEALER DETERMINED THAT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY WAS DEFECTIVE, NO SPARE AVAILABLE. VEHICLE FAILED AGAIN NEXT DAY WHILE BEING DRIVEN ON EXPRESSWAY. FAILED TO RESTART AT ALL. REQUIRED TOW.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT WAS BRAKING TO A TRAFFIC STOP AND WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD ABNORMALLY. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE FAILURE DESCRIBED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 95,000.
MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON A SUMMER VACATION TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE AT ABOUT 70 MPH. MY VAN WAS SET ON CRUISE CONTROL. ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE MOTOR REVVED UP EXTREMELY HIGH AND I TAPPED THE BRAKES WHICH DISCONNECTED THE CRUISE CONTROL. I THEN STEPPED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE ENGINE JUST REVVED UP LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL BUT IT WAS STILL IN DRIVE. I COASTED TO A STOP ALONG SIDE THE ROAD. I TRIED REVERSE AND DRIVE AND NOTHING. SO I PUT IT IN PARK WHICH DID STOP THE CAR FROM ROLLING AND WAITED FOR A TOW. $3041.11 AND 3 DAYS LATER, I HAD A ANOTHER TRANSMISSION INSTALLED AND HEADED HOME. *TR
THROTTLE BODY, THE CAR WILL SURGE RANDOMLY AT STOPLIGHTS OR BACKING UP WITH NO WARNING. VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. *TR
CAR SURGES FORWARD IN REVERSE AND FORWARD AT LOW SPEEDS. HAVE HAD SEVERAL NEAR MISSES IN PARKING LOTS AND AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS. YOU MUST BE READY TO APPLY BRAKES VERY QUICKLY AT ALL TIMES WHEN TRAVELING A LOW SPEEDS. TOOK TO FORD DEALER THEY HAVE DETERMINED IT IS A BAD THROTTLE BODY , THEY HAVE INFORMED ME IT IS ON BACKORDER AND DO NOT KNOW AT THIS TIME WHEN IT WILL BE IN. *TR
2005 FORD FREESTYLE SURGING WHILE IN GEAR. HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR OVER A YEAR AND HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS BUT NEVER FIXED. DEALER NOW TELLS ME THAT IT NEEDS A THROTTLE BODY BUT HE IS NOT ABLE TO GET ONE FROM FORD AS THEY ARE BACK ORDERED. NOW I'M FORCED TO USE A CAR WHICH THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER SAID WAS DANGEROUS. I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO RENT AND MY FORD ESP WON'T REIMBURSE UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETED. *TR
THE CAR LUNGES UNEXPECTENTLY WHEN CAR IS STOPPED WITH THE GEAR SHIFT IN THE "DRIVE" POSITION OR WHEN EASING FORWARD AT A LOW RATE OF SPEED. IT WAS INSPECTED AT A FORD SERVICE DEALERSHIP WHO SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. I AM AFRAID THE VEHICLE IS AT RISK FOR INJURING SOMEONE OR SOMETHING DO TO THIS UNEXPECTED LUNGING. IT SEEMS TO HAVE A GREATER PROBLEM DURING THE SUMMER AND WARMER PARTS OF THE YEAR.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE EXITING A PARKING SPACE IN REVERSE AT 5 MPH, THE CONTACT SHIFTED BETWEEN REVERSE AND DRIVE WHEN VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD AND BACKWARD ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT HAD TO MAINTAIN PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM SURGING. THE FAILURE RECURRED FREQUENTLY AND WAS MOST PROMINENT WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ACTIVATED OR THE WEATHER WAS HOT. THE FAILURE LATER RECURRED AND THE CONTACT CRASHED AGAINST A POOL TABLE IN A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE. THE BUMPER WAS SCRATCHED AND THE CONTACT DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE. THE AIR CONDITIONER COMPRESSOR FAILED BUT WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 95,000.
SITTING AT A RED LIGHT AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD WHEN FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. ALMOST GOT HIT IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION. CAR THEN IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO FAILSAFE MODE AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 30 MPH. TOOK IT TO DEALER AND WAS DETERMINED THAT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO REPLACED. THEN WAS TOLD A WEEK LATER THAT THE PART WAS BACKORDERED AND WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR OVER 90 DAYS. DEALER THEN TOLD ME IT WAS OK TO DRIVE. NO WAY I'M PUTTING MY FAMILY IN THIS CAR WHICH COULD GAS FORWARD ON IT'S OWN AS IT IS A DRIVE BY WIRE SYSTEM. MANY PEOPLE REPORTING THE SAME PROBLEMS. FORD EVEN HAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED REGARDING THIS PROBLEM--TSB 05-25-13. SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED TO VOLVO'S WHICH USE SAME PARTS...GO TO VEXEDVOLVO.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION. HOPEFULLY MORE REPORTS OF THIS WILL CAUSE FORD TO RECALL THE PART! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS RELEASED THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ABNORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FIVE TIMES. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED.THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,456 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,200.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER ON WAS WITH THE VEHICLE IN THE PARK POSITION, IT ACCELERATED, EITHER FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR WERE REPLACED. THE REMEDY DID NOT RESOLVE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INDICATED THAT THE ALTERNATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE WAS NOT RESOLVED. THE LOCAL MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE AS THE DRIVE BY WIRE THROTTLE ASSEMBLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000, AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 141,000. UPDATED 10/26/2011 *LN *TR
PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT 2 YRS AFTER BUYING VEHICLE USED. WIFE SHIFTED INTO REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF PARKING SPOT AND VEHICLE ATTEMPTED TO MOVE BACKWARDS FAST. WIFE HAD TO BASICALLY STAND ON BRAKE TO GET IT TO STOP. VEHICLE CUT OFF AND WENT INTO"FAIL-SAFE" MODE. IT SCARED HER THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, BUT SHE LEARNED QUICKLY TO EXPECT IT ESPECIALLY IF IT IS VERY WARM OUTSIDE OR A/C IS RUNNING. IT HAPPENED TO HER SEVERAL MORE TIMES THEN IT HAPPENED TO ME(I RARELY DRIVE THE CAR). THE ENGINE SEEMS TO RPM UP AND THEN THERE IS A LURCH -HAPPENS MOST OFTEN IN REVERSE, EVEN WITH YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE. BRAKE MUST BE PRESSED HARD. MY WIFE ESTIMATES IT HAPPENS ABOUT 5% OF THE TIME. OTHER THAN THAT HAS BEEN A GREAT CAR, VERY COMFORTABLE AND ROOMY
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. HE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND MAKING A TURN THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL STOPPED WORKING. THE RPM NEEDLE BEGAN MOVING RAPIDLY, YET THE PANEL DID NOT ILLUMINATE. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED TWICE A DAY ON A DAILY BASIS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO WARRANTY AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 57,222. UPDATED 11/16/10*BF THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAS RAN OUT OF GAS SEVERAL TIMES, BECAUSE THE GAS GAUGE WAS NOT ACCURATE. ALSO, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD BECOME DARK. UPDATED 11/23/10
WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE THE ENGINE WILL REV AND THE CAR LUNGES FORWARD OR BACKWARD. IT IS MUCH WORSE WITH THE AC ON, BUT DOES IT AT ANY TIME. IT HAS RECENTLY STARTING DOING THIS AFTER COMING TO A STOP WHILE DRIVING. THE CAR WILL THEN SHUT OFF AND GO INTO ENGINE FAIL SAFE MODE AND HAS HAS LIMITED POWER. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS DIRECTLY BEHIND US WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED.
THE VEHICLE LURCHES AFTER SITTING IN PARK. IT HAPPENS IN REVERSE AND DRIVE. THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO BE OKAY IN THE COLDER MONTHS, BUT WHEN THE HEAT/HUMIDITY HIT THE CAR BEGINS TO LURCH UNCONTROLLABLY. A FEW TIMES IT HAS GONE INTO FAIL SAFE MODE AND I'VE HAD TO RESTART IT. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IN PARKING LOTS AND AROUND PEDESTRIANS. *TR
I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE WAS DEFECTED UNTIL I WAS INVOLVED IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT (NOT THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT). I DID NOTICE IN THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT IT WOULD ACCELARATE ON ITS OWN AND NOTHING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SHOWED I HAD A PROBLEM. IT WAS AFTER THE ACCIDENT THAT I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT I HAD A PROBLEM AND SINCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRED THAT IT WAS GOING TO COST ME OVER $500 TO FIX IT. I WAS GIVEN AN INFORMATION SHEET SHOWING THAT MY TYPE OF VEHICLE HAD THROTTLE CONTROL PROBLEMS BUT NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE A RECALL. I REALLY NEED TO FIND OUT IF INDEED MY VEHICLE WILL BE RECALLED. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SURGED WHENEVER COMING TO STOP OR WHEN IN REVERSE. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE MOTOR MOUNT HAD FRACTURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED SEVERAL TIMES. THE CONTACT STATED WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO SAFETY MODE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 35 MPH. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND WAS TOLD THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THE FAILURE OCCURRED MORE WHEN THE WEATHER WAS WARM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 91,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH INTO A PARKING SPACE, PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE BRAKES FIRMLY IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER TWICE FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURE AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE DEFECT. THERE WAS A CURRENT OPEN INVESTIGATION PERTAINING TO THE DEFECT ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE11018 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
FREESTYLE LOSES POWER WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE, ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE IS DISPLAYED ON DASH, WILL NOT GO OVER 25 MPH. NEARLY TAKEN OUT BY A SEMI TRUCK WHEN TRY TO MAKE IT TO SHOULDER. SHUT CAR OFF, RESTARTED AND IT APPEARS TO WORK NORMALLY. TAKE IT TO MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSES A BAD THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS). HAD MECHANIC CLEAN THE TPS, BUT PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN SOON AFTER. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC FOR REPLACEMENT OF TPS AND FOUND OUT PART IS ON NATIONAL BACKORDER BECAUSE MANUFACTURER OF THE PART IS BANKRUPT. FORD IS NOW RE-ENGINEERING THE PART AND IT IS DUE TO ARRIVE IN LATE SEPTEMBER, 2009. HAVE ORDERED THE PART TWICE, BOTH TIMES FORD HAS CANCELLED THE ORDER. THE TYPICAL REASON IS WE DID NOT TAKE IT TO AN AUTHORIZED FORD DEALER FOR THE REPAIR. THE CLOSEST DEALER IS AN HOUR AWAY ON THE INTERSTATE AND WE DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND CANNOT AFFORD THE TOWING CHARGES, ESPECIALLY TO HAVE IT SIT ON THEIR LOT WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE PART TO BE BUILT SOMETIME IN SEPTEMBER. WE ARE ABLE TO DRIVE FOR SHORT DISTANCES ON CITY STREETS WITH SPEED LIMITS OF 30 MPH OR LESS. CAR GOES INTO ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE QUITE REGULARLY, APPROXIMATELY 80% OF THE TIME. SIMPLY WANT FORD TO SUPPLY A CAR FOR US TO USE UNTIL THE FREESTYLE IS SAFELY DRIVABLE WITH A TPS THAT WILL WORK 100% OF THE TIME. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO USE THE CAR FOR NORMAL DRIVING SINCE JUNE, WHEN SCHOOL LET OUT. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE RESPONSES FROM FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE. DO THE RIGHT THING AND GET THIS PROBLEMATIC TPS FIXED AS A RECALL ITEM. IN THE MEANTIME, GIVE US A CHEVY OR TOYOTA TO DRIVE SO WE CAN TAKE OUR KIDS TO SCHOOL NOW THAT IT IS BACK IN SESSION. *TR

APPROX. 4 WEEKS AGO MY VEHICLE BEGAN SURGE ON RPMS, ABOUT 3 TO 4000, WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. IT LUNGED BACKWARDS WHILE IN A PARKING LOT AND CAME APPROX. 5 FEET FROM A PEDESTRIAN. THEN THE ENTIRE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. IT THEN HAD A FAILSAFE ENGINE MODE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON THE DASH. WE TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ISSUE HAD BEEN FIXED. HOWEVER 2 DAYS LATER IT DOES THE SAME THING WHILE IN A FAST FOOD DRIVE-THROUGH, EXCEPT THIS TIME IT SURGED AND LUNGED FORWARD WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. I HAD TO APPLY BOTH FEET TO THE BRAKE AND IT CONTINUED TO TRY TO DRIVE FORWARD WHILE CARS WERE IN FRONT OF ME. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THIS TIME WE WERE TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AFTER HAVING MY VEHICLE FOR 10 DAYS I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE PART IS ON BACKORDER AND IS UNAVAILABLE TO BE FIXED UNTIL NOVEMBER OF 2009. I WAS ALSO TOLD TO COME PICK UP MY CAR BECAUSE IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE. HOWEVER WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY LATER ON THE SAME DAY, IT SURGES IN RPMS AND LUNGES BACKWARDS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW FORD CAN SAY THAT IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE.
FORD FREESTYLE 2005 HAS BEEN LEAKING FOR MONTHS. LARGE PUDDLES HAVE FORMED ON THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR. MOST RECENTLY, WATER HAS LEAKED FROM THE SUNROOF ONTO BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE. I HAVE READ EXTENSIVELY ON THE INTERNET ABOUT A BASIC DESIGN FLAW IN THIS CAR THAT CAUSES WATER FROM THE DRAINS TO EMPTY INTO THE CAR BECAUSE THE DRAINS ARE UNABLE TO HANDLE THE REQUIRED AMOUNT OF WATER. FORD DEALERSHIPS GENERALLY SEEM TO REPORT NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM OR DO NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. DRIVING WITH WATER DRIPPING ON MY HEAD IS A SAFETY HAZARD. ALSO, MY CHILD HAS BEEN SICK WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS FOR ALMOST A MONTH NOW. WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE. THE DASHBOARD GAUGES WILL RANDOMLY ALL BOTTOM OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS, AND THEN COME BACK ON. THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST ONCE NEARLY EVERYTIME WE DRIVE. OCCASIONALLY THE GAUGES WILL 'FREEZE' WHERE THEY ARE AND THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS (INCLUDING ODOMETER) WILL GO OUT. THIS LASTS FOR A FEW SECONDS, AND WHEN THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON, ALL OF THE GAUGES BOTTOM OUT FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN COME BACK ON. WHILE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, WE DISCOVERED THAT THERE IS A COMMON DEFECT IN THE GAUGE CLUSTER AND AN ONLINE SEARCH REVEALS HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. THERE IS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION, BUT NO RECALL TO DATE. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD DESPITE WHAT FORD SAYS, NOT KNOWING HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING (EVEN IF IT IS JUST FOR A FEW SECONDS) IS DANGEROUS, BUT THE WORST PART IS THE DISTRACTION WHEN YOU SEE YOUR GAUGES GOING CRAZY OUT OF THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE. ON MAY 2009, THE CAR STALLED WHILE DRIVING AFTER HITTING A BAD POT HOLE. CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. ON JULY 1, 2009 THE CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER BEING TURNED OFF FOR A BRIEF TIME. MECHANIC SAID IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE AND SAID IT APPEARED TO BE A PROBLEM WITH AN OVERSENSITIVE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE. WHENEVER WE HIT A BUMP NOW, THE CAR THREATENS TO STALL AND THEN SURGES. IT IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. IT STALLED RECENTLY, IN AUGUST 2010, WHEN BACKING UP VERY SLOWLY, BUT RESTARTED. THE CAR DOES NOT FEEL RELIABLE. ALSO, WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED ON AN INCLINE AND IT RAINS, THE BACK OF THE CAR IS FLOODED DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH THE DRAINAGE AROUND THE MOON ROOF. I HAVE A 2005 FORD FREESTYLE WITH A CVT TRANSMISSION. THE CAR DID NOT SHOW ANY PREVIOUS SIGNS OF PROBLEMS OR ENGINE INDICATOR LIGHTS. IN MAY OF 2009 THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 42,000 MILES ON IT. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WHEN THE TRANSMISSION "SLIPPED A ROD" CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO EXPLODE LEAVING PIECES OF THE TRANSMISSION ON THE ROAD WAY. CTV TRANSMISSION IN '05 FORD FREESTYLE MODELS HAVE BEEN TROUBLE SINCE THE DAY THEY WERE PUT ON THE MARKET. WHAT THE DEALERS DIDN'T DIVULGE IS THAT YOU ARE NOT LIKELY TO REPLACE PARTS OF THIS TYPE OF TRANSMISSION, RATHER YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE THING. THE SITUATIONS THAT ARISE, OUTSIDE OF BEING STRANDED, IS THAT THE ENGINE IS NOT RELIABLE. IT CAN MAKE THE CAR JERK, HESITATE, JUMP FORWARD AND BACKWARD AND SOME CASES, THE TRANSMISSION PRETTY MUCH DISINTEGRATED ON THE GROUND. HAVE BEEN TOLD BY SEVERAL TECHNICIANS THAT THE THROTTLE BODY SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED. WE HAVE REPLACED IT TWICE ALREADY. IT HAS PORTS THAT "HEAT" IT THOUGH THE RADIATOR. HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT SHOULDN'T HAVE THE PORTS. WE LIVE IN FL. THIS CAR IS NOT MADE FOR HOT WEATHER. MIGHT BE OK TO LEAVE THAT HEATED THROTTLE BODY ON IN COOLER CLIMATES, BUT NOT IN FL. AT FIRST, IT HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY AND WOULD WORK MOST OF THE TIME, BUT NOT ALL. NOW, IT HAPPENS REGULARLY AND I HAVE DRIVEN SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT KNOWING MY SPEED OR FUEL LEVEL. SOMETIMES THE COMPUTER RESETS. AT TIMES, THE GAUGES RESUME WORKING WITHIN A MINUTE, OTHER TIMES, THEY DO NOT WORK FOR THE ENTIRE DRIVE, LEAVING ME WITH NO WAY OF KNOWING MY SPEED OR FUEL LEVEL AND NOW WAY OF SEEING INSIDE THE CAR WHEN IT IS DARK. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND A TSB ON THE ISSUE AT FORD, BUT IT IS EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND REALLY IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF KNOWING THE SPEED AND FUEL LEVELS. THE PROBLEM ALSO LOCKS OUT THE SHIFT LOCKING MECHANISM PREVENTING THE VEHICLE ONCE PLACED IN PARK TO GOING INTO GEAR OR NEUTRAL FOR TOWING.
