NOTICING OUR 2006 FORD FREESTYLE RPM'S SUDDENLY SURGING WHEN RUNNING AT LOW RPM'S AND THEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. PROBLEM IS INCREASED WHEN AIR CONDITIONING IS ON. WAS VERY CLOSE TO CRASHING OUR FREESTYLE INTO THE SHELVING IN THE GARAGE. ALSO HAVE HAD INCIDENTS WHERE THE FAN MOTOR ON THE REAR SEAT CLIMATE CONTROL WILL SURGE TO HIGH THEN GO ALMOST TO OFF, SURGE AGAIN AND THEN STABILIZE AT THE DESIRED FAN SPEED. HAVE NOT TAKEN ACTION ON A REPAIR YET. *TR
HAVE 2006 FORD FREESTYLE WITH 55,000 MILES ON IT. IT RECENTLY LUNGED FORWARD WHILE I WAS IN DRIVEWAY. AND ENGINE HAS BEEN REVVING UP FOR NO REASON WHAT SO EVER. *KB
2006 FOR FREESTYLE 120000 MILES, I WAS BACKING UP CAR ENGINE STARTED TO RACE. HAD FOOT ON BRAKE NOT ON ACCELERATOR. IF FOOT WAS NOT ON BRAKE WOULD HAVE HIT PARKED CAR BEHIND ME. BACKED UP AND HAD TO KEEP BRAKE APPLIED TO KEEP CAR FROM MOVING IN REVERSE TO QUICKLY. CAR THEN STALLED. I RESTARTED AND WENT INTO "SAFE MODE". DROVE TO AUTOMECHANIC UNABLE TO DRIVE OVER 40MPH. MECHANIC LOOKING AT THROTTLE BODY AS CAUSE. *TR
WE OWN A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. IN 2008, AT 36,730 MILES WE HAD THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE LURCHED & THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. PROBLEM FIXED. HOWEVER, 2011 @ 88,356 WE HAD THE CAR IN AGAIN BECAUSE IT LURCHED AND ENGINE & WRENCH LIGHT WOULD COME ON AGAIN, AND IT WOULD LOSE POWER. IF WE TURNED THE KEY OFF AND BACK ON, IT WOULD TEMPORARILY GO AWAY. THEY REPLACED AN ELECTRONIC SENSOR IN THE TRANSMISSION. THIS WAS AT A FORD DEALER. THEY HAD TO CALL THEIR MECHANIC HELP LINE & WORK ON IT SEVERAL DAYS TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, THAT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM, BECAUSE IT HAD TO GO BACK IN TWO WEEKS LATER FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THEY CLAIMED THE NEW PART WAS FAULTY AND THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR AGAIN. FAST FORWARD 2.5 MONTHS. WE ARE IN JUNE @ 92,744. VEHICLE WAS AGAIN LURCHING, WRENCH & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND HAD A LOSS OF POWER. THIS ALL SEEMED TO HAPPEN WHEN THE ENGINE WAS UNDER STRAIN/LOAD: AC ON HIGH, TURNING THE WHEEL. IT WOULD HAPPEN IN REVERSE OR DRIVE. I HAD A FOOT ON/OVER THE BRAKE - SO LURCHING NEVER CAUSED ANY INCIDENTS. THIS TIME, I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC. HE DIDN'T BELIEVE ME - BECAUSE AS I SAID - IF YOU TURNED THE CAR OFF, IT WOULD ALL GO AWAY UNTIL THE NEXT RANDOM TIME IT HAPPENED. SO, AFTER 2 DAYS I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP FROM HIM. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 DAYS LATER. I TOOK IT TO AUTOZONE AND HAD THEM PLUG IT IN TO GET THE CODES OUT OF IT - BEFORE I TURNED IT OFF. I TOOK THE VEHICLE AND THE CODES TO MY MECHANIC. HE HAD THE CAR FOR A COUPLE DAYS AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO BEHAVE AS I DESCRIBED TO HIM. HE REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY AND IT SEEMED TO FIX IT. WE TOOK IT ON A ROAD TRIP FOR 6,000 MILES AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. IT IS NOW JUST OVER 100,000 MILES AND THE WARRANTY HAS NOW EXPIRED. UNTIL NOW - WARRANTY HAS COVERED THE BULK OF THE COST. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO, THERE WAS ONE INSTANCE OF SURGING BUT NO OTHER SYMPTOMS OR LIGHTS. NOT SURE WHAT I PLAN TO DO FROM HERE EXCEPT PERHAPS WAIT UNTIL IT IS RECALLED?*KB
TWICE, IN 100+ DEGREE WEATHER, AFTER IDLING FOR A SHORT TIME WITH AC RUNNING, I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE ONLY TO HAVE IT LUNGE BACKWARD. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THIS WITH THE BRAKE. IT CONTINUED TO HAPPEN IN DRIVE UNTIL I REACHED MY DESTINATION (FORTUNATELY A SHORT DISTANCE, ALTHOUGH TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY) AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR AWHILE. IT HAS NOT REPEATED THROUGH THE COOL MONTHS, BUT I FEAR IT WILL REPEAT IF I AM IN THE SAME CONDITIONS. AS I LIVE PART OF THE YEAR IN ARIZONA, THAT IS VERY LIKELY. IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS CAR, HOPE FORD ISN'T WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO DIE BEFORE THEY FIX IT. *TR
AT LEAST ONCE DAILY, MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE LURCHES FORWARD WHEN I AM GOING FORWARD OR BACKWARD AT A LOW SPEED, SUCH AS PULLING IN TO OR OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, OR GOING FROM A COMPLETE STOP. TODAY AS I ENTERED THE ROAD FROM A COMPLETE STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE CAR JERKED FORWARD, I HEARD A NOISE AND THE ORANGE WRENCH SHAPED LIGHT CAME ON. *TR
2006 FORD FREESTYLE LUNGING WHILE IN REVERSE AND DRIVE AFTER FOOT IS LIFTED OFF OF BRAKE, ALMOST CAUSING 2 SEPARATE ACCIDENTS. *TT
WHILE DRIVING THE CARS RPMS WILL ACCELERATE THE CAR, IN DRIVE OR REVERSE, I MUST BE AWARE SO THAT I DO NOT HIT ANYONE/ANYTHING AND BRAKE. AT TIMES ONCE I BRAKE THE CAR WILL TURN OFF, I WILL GET A WRENCH OR ENGINE OR BOTH. THIS CAN ALSO OCCUR WHILE AT A RED LIGHT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE FORWARD ABNORMALLY WITH THE GEAR IN ANY SELECTED POSITION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL ENGAGED. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT AUTO SHOP. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE THROTTLE BODY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THERE WAS CURRENTLY AN OPEN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE11018 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
DURING THE PAST MONTH ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE CAR ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY, TO THE POINT OF HAVING TO HOLD THE BRAKE. CAR STALLED IN TRAFFIC WHEN STARTING FROM A RED LIGHT, CANNOT ACCELERATE OVER 30MPH. THE DASHBOARD WRENCH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THE GARAGE CHECKED THEY GOT AN ERROR CODE FOR THE THROTTLE VALVE, WRENCH LIGHT WAS ON. PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WORSE WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE, (85-100 F).THIS ISSUE HAPPENS WITH NO WARNING! WHY IS THERE NO RECALL!! THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. *TR
WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE IN REVERSE, THE ENGINE REVVED WILDLY CAUSING A BIG INCREASE IN ACCELERATION BACKWARDS. THANKFULLY I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES TO STOP (BEFORE I CLIPPED THE SIDE OF THE GARAGE) AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO SEE IF THE REVVING WOULD CONTINUE...IT DID. FOR THE NEXT MINUTE OR SO, THE ENGINE REVVED FROM ABOUT 800 RPMS TO 2500 RPMS IN NEUTRAL, WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE....THE ENGINE ACTED THE SAME WAY IN NEUTRAL AS IT DID IN REVERSE (INCREASED RPMS = INADVERTENT ACCELERATION). AFTER A MINUTE, I CAUTIOUSLY CONTINUED BACKING OUT AND EVERYTHING WAS OK THEN. OTHER CONDITIONS TO CONSIDER IN YOUR EVALUATION: -IT WAS HOT OUTSIDE (100 DEGREES) -ENGINE WAS WARM FROM PREVIOUSLY RUNNING ERRANDS -AC ON -WHEELS TURNED SLIGHTLY -TWO ADULTS AND 3 CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME
I OWN A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION THAT THE AGENCY IS INVESTIGATING. I WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS INVESTIGATION. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT LOCATED THE FAILURE WITHIN THE THROTTLE BODY AND IT WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61,300. THE CONSUMER STATED THE WRENCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED, AND THE VEHICLE SURGED WHILE IN REVERSE AND THEN STALLED. UPDATED 09/01/11
I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AT ABOUT 1-5 MPH AND PRESSING THE BRAKES, THEN THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AND MOVED 2 TO 4 FEET (AT NO POINT I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL). AFTER THAT, THE GAS PEDAL DID NOT WORK, AND I HAD TO RESTART THE CAR TO BE ABLE TO MOVE IT AGAIN. THIS ALL HAPPENED AT AN INTERSECTION. I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WITH THE LUNGE I COULD HAVE HIT A PEDESTRIAN. WITH THE NEED TO RE-START AT THE MIDDLE OF A CONGESTED INTERSECTION, I COULD HAVE BEEN HIT BY A CAR MOVING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
AUTO-UP/DOWN FUNCTION IS ERRATIC. BATTERY WARNING LIGHT GOES OFF AND ON. SUDDEN ACCELERATION AT ANY SPEED. *KB
THE CAR IS SURGING AND LUNGING (SEE PENDING INVESTIGATION FROM MAY 2011). ALSO, WHEN RUNNING THE A/C IT STARTS TO GO OFF AND ON BY ITSELF, THEN THE ENGINE STARTS TO SHUT OFF AND ON, AND ALL GAGES GO TO ZERO, LIKE THE CAR IS LOSING POWER.

THE FAILURE OCCURRED AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE ENGINE WOULD EXHIBIT A LOSE OF POWER WHILE ACCELERATING. THE FAILURES OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY AND WITH TIME BECAME CONSTANT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS, WHERE THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS AN OPEN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE11018 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE FREQUENTLY LUNGES FORWARD WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR BEING APPLIED. IT MOST FREQUENTLY HAPPENS AS THE BRAKE LETS UP BUT ALSO HAPPENS JUST AS IT IS BEING PUT INTO DRIVE. NO COLLISIONS YET, JUST A FEW SCARES. *TR
WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2006 FORD FREESTYLE IN MARCH, 2007. ON JUNE 14, 2011, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT, PERIODICALLY SINCE VEHICLE PURCHASE, THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE SURGED WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL; THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE TO NORMAL SPEED; AND, IT ACTED LIKE IT DIDN'T WANT TO SHIFT INTO NEXT GEAR. THE JUNE 14, 2011 OCCURRENCE WAS THE WORST ONE, PLUS, THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSIS IS THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED...AT ONLY 37,200 MILES. REPAIR ESTIMATE FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE PART IS $836.48. DEALERSHIP ALSO DETERMINED THAT AN ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET/GASKET NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR COST OF $424.00; REAR BRAKES WILL BE NEEDED WITHIN 5,00 MILES FOR $374, IF NEW ROTORS ARE NEEDED; AND, NEW BATTERY IS NEEDED NOW FOR A COST OF $138...ALL THIS AT ONLY 37,200 MILES. WE FOOLISHLY PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. FORD TELLS US THAT THE WARRANTY ONLY COVERS THE POWER TRAIN, AND SINCE THE THROTTLE BODY IS CONSIDERED TO BE ELECTRONIC, THE WARRANTY WILL NOT APPLY. WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THAT IT WAS A BUMPER-TO-BUMPER EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN WE AGREED TO PURCHASE THE WARRANTY. WE ARE VERY UNHAPPY CAMPERS! NO MORE EXTENDED WARRANTIES FOR US. WE BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE AT LEAST FOR THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACEMENT, IN FULL. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE NOW, AND EVEN WHEN IT IS "REPAIRED" WE WILL STILL BE AFRAID BECAUSE OF THE HISTORY OF THE FREESTYLE PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVE READ ABOUT ONLINE. PLEASE HELP! THANKS.

MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE IS LUNGING AWAY FROM ME AT SLOW SPEEDS AND EVEN WHEN MY FOOT IS ON THE PEDAL. THE WRENCH INDICATOR HAS COME ON TWICE, BUT NEITHER OF THE MECHANICS I HAVE TAKEN IT TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO RETRIEVE THE CODES. I AM SO SCARED I'M GOING TO HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE, A PERSON, OR DRIVE INTO MY GARAGE WALL WHEN I'M PARKING. THE RPMS ARE STAYING UP EVEN WHEN I EASE OFF THE GAS. *TR
FORD FREESTYLE 2006 SURGING AND REVING UP WHEN PUTTING IT IN GEAR. REVERSE AND FORWARD ALMOST HAD ACCIDENT AGAIN. IT SEAMS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THIS MANY OWNERS. WHEN PUTTING IT IN GEAR IT REVS UP HIGH AND THEN SHUTSW ENGINE DOWN. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON. TODAY 6/21/2012 MY CAR STARTED SURGING AT EVERY STOP LIGHT SO SEVERELY IF WE WEREN'T HOLDING DOWN THE BRAKE WE WOULD OF HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. THE PROBLEM BECAME SO SEVERE WE HAD TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AT EVERY INTERSECTION TO KEEP CAR FROM TRYING TO JUMP INTO THE INTERSECTION AND STALL. TODAY'S TEMP WAS IN THE HIGH NINETIES AND WE WERE USING THE AIR CONDITIONING. TODAY'S INCIDENT WAS THE WORST ITS BEEN. WENT ON LINE AND SEARCH THE SYMPTOMS AND FOUND THAT A LOT OF FREESTYLE OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. WITH THE SAFETY OF THE CAR OWNER AND PEDESTRIANS THAT COULD BE NEAR THE CAR IN JEOPARDY. FORD SHOULD BE RECALLING THESE CARS AND TRYING TO FIND A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO FIX THIS RATHER THEN CHARGING THE OWNERS HIGH DOLLARS TO REPLACE A DEFECTIVE DESIGNED PART WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART. *TT
PURCHASED A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE IN APRIL 2010 WITH 45,831 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS USED FOR TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM WORK, ERRANDS, AND LEISURE. SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED UNEXPLAINED SURGES IN THE ENGINE RESULTING IN THE RPMS TO INCREASE AND A SUDDEN JERKING MOVEMENT WHILE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. THE SURGES HAVE BECOME MORE FREQUENT OCCURRING ON A DAILY BASIS DURING WARM WEATHER ESPECIALLY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. WE HAVE BEEN WORRIED ABOUT THE CAR LUNGING INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE PARKING/BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE OR WHILE WAITING AT A LIGHT OR STUCK IN TRAFFIC ON THE HIGHWAY. ON 6-13-11 AT 5 PM EST, WHILE ON OUR WAY HOME FROM WORK, THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY SURGED AND MOVED FORWARD INTO ANOTHER CAR WHILE WE WERE WAITING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WE HAVE RESEARCHED ONLINE TO SEE IF ANY OTHER FREESTYLE OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND TO OUR SURPRISE, THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS ISSUE BUT NO STATEMENTS OR RECALLS HAVE BEEN MADE BY FORD. WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO AFFORD TO TRY AND HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY FIXED TO REMEDY THE SITUATION. THIS IS SOMETHING WE WERE NOT EXPECTING CONSIDERING THE CAR ONLY HAD 45,851 MILES ON IT WHEN WE BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR. *TR
STOPPED AT A STORE AND LEFT THE CAR RUNNING WITH AIR CONDITIONER ON IN 90 DEGREE PLUS HEAT, PUT THE CAR IN GEAR AND IT LUNGED AND DIED. TOOK 3 TIMES TO GET IT TO RESTART, AND THE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. VEHICLE THEN WOULD ACCELERATE PROPERLY. HAS NO DONE IT TWO TIMES. I THINK IT MIGHT BE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR SHUDDERED AND LOST ACCELERATOR POWER. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING, HOWEVER, I WAS UNABLE TO GIVE THE CAR ANY GAS TO GET IT OFF OF THE ROAD, AND COULDN'T EVEN REV THE ENGINE WITH THE GAS PEDAL. NO RESPONSE AT ALL FROM THE GAS PEDAL - ONLY IDLE AND ENGINE STILL RUNNING. THE "WRENCH" SYMBOL WAS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK, TURNED IT OFF, RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE CAR RESPONDED AS IF NOTHING HAD JUST HAPPENED. I AM LUCKY I HADN'T REACHED THE INTERSECTION YET AND WAS IN THE PROCESS OF PULLING OUT TO TURN IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC! FIRST TIME THIS HAS EVER HAPPENED, HOWEVER, I HAVE BEEN NOTICING HOW MY CAR HAS BEEN SURGING AS I DRIVE. LUCKILY THE FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. WHILE EXPERIENCING THESE PROBLEMS, VEHICLE HAS DIED TWICE, AND TENDS TO DO IT MORE AT LOW, IDLE ONLY SPEEDS, FOR EXAMPLE WHILE PARKING OR PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. I HAD IT LOOKED INTO THE NEXT DAY ON 6/13/2001. THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE I TOOK IT TO ( GREENWAY FORD, ORLANDO, FL.) FORD RAN AN EEC SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS AND FOUND THAT THE THROTTLE CONTROL HAD TO BE REPLACED AND THE ON BOARD COMPUTER ADJUSTED. SINCE THE WAY THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD, ALTHOUGH I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE IT BEFORE IT WENT A FOOT, IT WOULD SEEM TO POSE A DANGER TO INDIVIDUALS NEARBY THE VEHICLE. *TR

I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY BUT AT THE TIME MY CAR ONLY HAD ROUGHLY 48000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR HAD TOO FEW MILES ON IT TO HAVE THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM, SO I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. *TR
MY VEHICLE LUNGED INTO TRAFFIC, AFTER STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE WRENCH INDICATOR LIGHT INDICATED A FAILURE, BUT THEN DISAPPEARED AFTER A COUPLE OF MOMENTS. ALSO, WHILE PULLING INTO A DRIVE THROUGH THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD ALMOST HITTING ANOTHER CAR AND I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO PREVENT A CRASH. THIS LUNGE FORWARD, THE ENGINE REVS UP WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND I THINK THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS TO THE DRIVER AND PEDESTRIANS (IMAGINE THIS HAPPENING AT A SCHOOL CROSSING!!!).

THEY STOPPED IN WOODBRIDGE VA TO SPEND THE NIGHT. AFTER OBTAINING A MOTEL ROOM THEY USED THE CAR TO GO TO A RESTAURANT TO EAT AND AT THIS TIME WHILE DRIVING THE CAR IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AND SURGE FORWARD. APPLYING THE BRAKE SEEMED TO HAVE KNOW EFFECT ON THE CONDITION. MY SON CALLED ME AND ASK WHAT I THOUGHT HE SHOULD DO AND I TOLD HIM TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER IN THE MORNING. ON THE MORNING OF JUNE 11 2011 HE DROVE THE CAR TO COWLES PARKWAY FORD IN WOODBRIDGE VA. THEY REPORTED TO HIM THAT THE CAR HAD A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY AND IT WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $969.00. THE PART WAS REPLACED AND THEY PROCEEDED TO NAGS HEAD NC. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION ON MY PART I DISCOVERED THAT FORD MOTOR COMPANY KNEW THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTED BUT TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE DID NOT INFORM OWNERS. I WOULD NOT HAVE SENT MY FAMILY ON A VACATION WITH THIS CAR IF I HAD KNOWN THAT THIS POTENTIONALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION COULD ARISE. *TR

THERE IS APPARANTLY A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE OF THROTTLE BODIES DUE TO THE ISSUE BEING SO WIDE SPREAD SO THAT HAS TO TELL YOU SOMETHING ABOUT HOW WIDESPREAD THIS PROBLEM IS. HOT HUMID WEATHER WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON. VEHICLE SURGES FORWARD APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT WHEN STOPPED IN TRAFFIC WITH RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE TACHOMETER SHOWS AN INCREASE IN RPM FROM APPROXIMATELY 700 RPM TO APPROXIMATELY 1300 RPM. THE SURGE LASTS FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE OR TWO SECONDS AND STOPS. THE BRAKE STOPS THE FORWARD SURGE. THE SURGE ALSO OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN REVERSE. SHUTTING OFF THE AIR CONDITIONER PREVENTS A REOCCURRENCE OF THE SURGE.

ALSO THE CAR WILL BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE WRENCH COMES ON AND MOTOR SHUTS DOWN. THERE IS NO WARNING AND HAS BEEN VERY SCARY WHEN MERGING INTO 75MPH TRAFFIC WITH NO WHERE TO GO. ON THE 6TH OF JUNE 2011 THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER WITHIN THE 30 DAYS ALL SYMPTOMS WERE OCCURRING AGAIN. I HAD THE COMPRESSOR GO OUT WHICH COST $1000 TO REPLACE. ON 12/02/11 I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE SHOP, THEY RAN CODES AND FOUND IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE MANY ACCOUNTS OF THE LUNGING AND THE WRENCH SHUT DOWN ISSUE. IT HAS BECOME VERY REGULAR AND MAKES MY CAR VERY UNRELIABLE.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN ROUTE TO WORK OR THE GROCERY STORE, MY 06 FORD FREESTYLE SEEMED SLOW AND SLUGGISH TO RESPOND AS I WOULD BE WAITING AT A RED LIGHT FOR THE GREEN. WHEN THE LIGHT DID TURN GREEN AND I WOULD PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO GO, THE CAR WOULD SHUT OFF. A FEW TIMES THERE WERE CLOSE CALLS AS THE CAR BEHIND ME WOULD BE UNAWARE I WAS HAVING TROUBLE AND ALMOST REAR-END ME. WHEN THE CAR WOULD CUT OFF, I WOULD PROCEED TO RESTART THE CAR AND THEN PRESS THE GAS TO GO. THE CAR SEEMED TO RESPOND EXTREMELY SLOW LIKE I WOULD HAVE THE GAS PEDAL PRESSED TO THE FLOOR AND WOULD ONLY BE ABLE TO GO 20 - 25 MPH. ON OTHER OCCASIONS, THE CAR WOULD SEEM TO LURCH FORWARD OR BACKWARD (DEPENDING ON IF I HAD THE CAR IN DRIVE OR REVERSE) AS SOON AS I WOULD TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE. AFTER THE 3RD OR 4TH TIME THIS HAPPENED, I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL SHOP WHO HAD TO REFER ME TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO BE LOOKED AT, FORD EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS IT WAS CAUSING AN ELECTRICAL COMMUNICATION MISHAP IN THE CAR. SO OVER $900 LATER, THE CAR WAS FIXED. I DID DO MY RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT SEVERAL OTHER 06 FORD FREESTYLES HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. EVEN THE SERVICE MAN AT THE FORD DEALER WHO FIXED MY CAR SAID THAT HE HAD JUST HAD HIS 06 FREESTYLE REPAIRED FOR THE SAME REASON. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIES TO DO SOMETHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM LIKE A RECALL. THERE WERE TIMES WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO BE REAR-ENDED, IN AN ACCIDENT, OR POSSIBLY DRIVE THROUGH MY HOUSE. A RECALL WOULD BE BEING PROACTIVE INSTEAD OF WAITING TO BE REACTIVE. BEING PROACTIVE SHOWS THAT THE FORD CARES FOR ITS CONSUMERS AND APPRECIATES THEM AS WELL. SAFETY SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!!! *TR

WHEN I MENTIONED AN 06 FREESTYLE, IT TOOK NO TIME TO DIAGNOSE OVER THE PHONE AS A THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM. THE REPAIR WAS QUOTED IN THE $850 RANGE. I PURCHASED A THROTTLE BODY FROM ANOTHER 2006 FREESTYLE FROM A JUNKYARD AND MADE THE REPAIR. LESS THAN 7000 MILES LATER WE ARE SEEING THE BEGINNING OF THE PROBLEM AGAIN. THE INITIAL SURGES/REVVING OCCURRED FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, USUALLY IN HOT TEMPERATURES WITH THE AIR RUNNING. THE IDLE RPM USUALLY SITS AT ABOUT 500 RPM, AND WHEN WE STOP, STILL IN DRIVE, IT SURGES, WHICH CAUSES THE CAR TO LUNGE FORWARD. WHEN IT PROGRESSED, IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO SIT AT A STOP SIGN WITHOUT IDLING FROM 500 TO 750 RPM EVERY SECOND, BACK AND FORTH. AFTER I MADE THE REPAIR, THE CAR RAN GREAT. BUT AS I SAID, WE ARE LESS THAN 7000 MILES OUT OF THE REPAIR, AND THE INITIAL STAGES ARE HAPPENING AGAIN. I CAN PURCHASE A PART FROM THE FORD DEALER FOR $600+, OR AN AFTERMARKET PART FOR $500+. MY HESITATION IN YET ANOTHER REPAIR IS A FAULTY PART FROM THE MANUFACTURER, OR A PART THAT IS NOT OEM, BUT MADE PER THEIR SPECS BY AN AFTERMARKET MANUFACTURER THAT WILL FAIL IN A SIMILAR MANNER. I BELIEVE THE BEST CASE IN THIS SITUATION WILL BE TO TAKE THE $4000 HIT I WILL INCUR DUE TO KELLY BLUE BOOK DIFFERENCES FROM WHAT THE CAR IS ACTUALLY WORTH, NOW THAT OTHER DEALERS KNOW WHAT'S UP. *TR
