I have experienced two engine failures in my 2005 Ford Mustang due to timing chain issues, specifically the failure of the timing chain cassette, guides, and tensioners in the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine. The first failure happened suddenly with no warning, resulting in severe bottom-end damage, including rod knock. The timing chain cassette ends tend to snap off, sending debris through the engine and damaging lifters, camshafts, and other critical components. The second failure was preceded by an audible “death rattle,” a known symptom of timing chain guide and tensioner failure. Despite this, my vehicle never displayed a check engine light or oil pressure warning before either failure. Unlike later Mustangs with an oil pressure gauge, mine only has a warning light, which never activated.This issue poses a major safety risk, especially at highway speeds. My first engine failure occurred with no prior symptoms, which could have led to an accident had I been merging or overtaking. A failing timing chain can cause misfires, loss of power, or sudden engine shutdown, endangering the driver and others on the road. Independent mechanics have confirmed this issue, and Ford service centers recognize it as a common problem with the 4.0L SOHC V6 engine. Ford has quoted $3,000–$4,000 for timing chain service, making repairs nearly as expensive as engine replacement. These engines rely on multiple chains and hydraulic tensioners that wear out over time, causing slack in the timing chain, jumped timing, and catastrophic damage, typically after 100,000 miles. Despite this, there are no clear warning systems to alert drivers before failure occurs. While timing chains are considered serviceable components, the high failure rate of the timing chain guides and tensioners in these engines, combined with excessive repair costs, indicates a design flaw. I have spent around $4,500 addressing this issue, yet the risk of recurrence remains.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. While driving at approximately 25-35 MPH for approximately two miles, the engine started overheating. The oil pan gasket was leaking. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V779000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). There were several hoses that were split. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the radiator and engine were cracked, and the pistons were loose. There was air in the oil. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.

THE DAY AFTER GETTING MY OIL CHANGED (WHICH HAS BEEN DONE ROUTINELY THROUGH OUT THE LIFE OF MY CAR) ON MY WAY TO WORK THE FOLLOWING MORNING MY CAR BEGAN TO SLIP ERRATICALLY OUT OF GEAR, IT DROPPED INTO NEUTRAL WHEN GOING FROM A COMPLETE STOP (I NARROWLY AVOIDED GETTING HIT TURNING LEFT ACROSS TRAFFIC) AND THEN SLIPPED INTO REVERSE AT A STOP LIGHT, WHICH I DID NOT DISCOVER UNTIL I HIT THE GAS AND NEARLY SLAMMED INTO THE CAR BEHIND ME AT THE LIGHT. WHEN I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP I HAD THE CAR INVESTIGATED BY A THIRD PARTY TO ENSURE THAT JIFFY LUBE WAS NOT AT FAULT FOR THE DAMAGE DONE TO MY TRANSMISSION WHEN THEY CHANGED THE OIL IN THE CAR. THE REPORT CAME BACK STATING THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS EXPERIENCING CATASTROPHIC FAILURE DUE TO UNEVEN WEARING ON THE INSIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE SERVO BARS. I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION THAT IS IN MY CAR AND I WAS FORCED TO BUY A COMPLETELY NEW TRANSMISSION FOR $4600, OTHERWISE MY 10 YEAR OLD GENTLY DRIVEN WELL TAKEN CARE OF CAR WITH LESS THAN 65,000 MILES ON IT THAT IS IN NEAR MINT CONDITION WOULD HAVE BEEN BASICALLY SCRAP. THIS IS A DANGEROUS MECHANICAL FAILURE THAT IS FREQUENTLY OCCURRING AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE A FATALITY. *TR
THE VEHICLE BEGAN STALLING AT LOW SPEEDS, IN TRAFFIC, AT RED LIGHTS/STOP SIGNS AND WHILE TURNING. SEVERAL VERY CLOSE CALLS TO DATE. YOU MUST RESTART ENGINE DURING A TURN OFTEN WITH OTHER MOTORISTS BEARING DOWN ON YOU. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE AND WHEN YOU DO A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET. THE DEALERSHIP IS ALSO AWARE OF IT BECAUSE THEY TELL YOU RIGHT AWAY THAT YOU WILL NEED A $500.00 PART TO FIX IT AND THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE LABOR. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD BY A FEW MECHANICS THAT THIS USED TO BE SOLVED BY REPLACING THE IDLE AIR CONTROL SWITCH,ABOUT A $40.00 PART. THAT PART IS NOT OFFERED WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL BUT IT COMES ON THE $500.00 PART. *TR
MY 16 YR OLD SON WAS DRIVING AND THE SPEED GAUGE STARTED READING 90 THEN 60 THEN 100 ALSO THE TEMP GAUGE WENT INTO THE RED. HE PANICKED THAT CAR WAS GOING TO BLOW UP AND PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AT NIGHT TO CALL TO SEE WHAT HE SHOULD DO. WHILE DRIVING ON LOCAL ROAD HEARD A NOISE FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT, LOST POWER STEERING, BATTERY WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND SHORTLY AFTER CAR STOPPED RUNNING. FOUND ACCESSORY BELT DETACHED FROM PULLEY. FOUND OUT FROM FORD THAT THIS WAS THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY, AND THIS IS QUITE COMMON ON THE 4.0 V6 ENGINE. *TR
THERMOSTAT HOUSING EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING.... SPOKE TO MY MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THAT THESE COME IN ALL THE TIME TO THEIR SHOP ON 4.0 FORD CARS AND TRUCKS. SO MUCH SO THAT YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO GIVE FORD THE PART NUMBER WHEN YOU CALL IN THE PART BECAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE ORDERING THEM. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD MUSTANG GT. WHILE TRAVELING 35 MPH, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AS IT STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 32,000.
DESIGN OF THE CABIN AIR INTAKE BOX AND DRAIN LED TO A BACK FLOW OF WATER DURING A HEAVY DOWNPOUR. THIS LED TO WATER FLOWING THROUGH THE AIR DUCTS AND INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX. FORD PLACED 4"X6" PIECE OF FOAM OVER THE SMART JUNCTION BOX IN AN EFFORT TO "BANDAGE THE PROBLEM, RATHER THAN CORRECTING THE CAUSE. AS WATER ENTERED THE CABIN AREA, IT SOAKED THE SMART JUNCTION BOX TO FAIL WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN THE PROXIMATE CAUSE FOR THE ENGINE DYING. END RESULT IS THAT THE SMART JUNCTION BOX MUST BE REPLACED AND PROGRAMMED. *KB
MY SON WAS DRIVING HIS 2005 FORD MUSTANG YESTERDAY WHEN IT BURST INTO FLAMES. HE WAS PULLING ONTO I 95 WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY SHUT OFF. HE COULDN'T EVEN MAKE IF OFF THE DRIVING AREA WHEN IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. ONCE IT STOPPED BLACK SMOKE STARTED POURING OUT. HE JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR AND RAN AWAY FROM IT WHEN IT BURST INTO FLAMES. THE CAR WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION. NEVER EVEN MISSED AN OIL CHANGE. NO WARNING SIGNS OF ANY ISSUES. I AM THANKFUL THAT MY SON IS SAFE BUT VERY UPSET AT THE FORD CAR AND HAVE NOW READ MANY FORD FIRE ISSUES THAT FORD HAS NOT CORRECTED. *TR

THE CAR'S INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SUDDENLY COMPLETELY MALFUNCTIONED, THE "FAIL-SAFE" ENGINE SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN AND TO SUDDENLY STOP THE CAR IN MOVING TRAFFIC. THIS WAS TRULY A LIFE-ENDANGERING SITUATION. THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE DIALS OF THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAD BEEN ERRATIC IN THE PAST WEEKS BEFORE THE INCIDENT. OBVIOUSLY, THIS CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. FOR MORE THAN FIVE WEEKS FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS CLAIMED TO HAVE NO INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS AVAILABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2005 MUSTANG. I HAVE ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AS MY CAR (WHICH IS AN AUTOMATIC) WOULD RANDOMLY STALL OUT AT LIGHTS. ONE TIME LEAVING ME STRANDED IN THE INTERSECTION. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FILL MY GAS TANK AS THE GAS PUMP NOZZLE KICKS BACK FOR SOME REASON WHILE PUMPING. MY SPEEDOMETER WILL READ INACCURATELY AT TIMES, SOMETIMES READING EXTREMELY HIGH NUMBERS, SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL. I AM USING GPS AND MY OWN DISCRECTION WHEN GAUGING HOW FAST I'M GOING. AFTER A HEAVY RAINSTORM, WHEN MAKING LEFT TURNS, MY PASSENGER FLOOR BECOMES FLOODED BY WATER POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE DASHBOARD. MY PASSENGERS FEET GET SOAKED AS WELL AS CARPET, FLOORMAT AND ANY OTHER THINGS I HAVE IN THE FLOOR BOARD. *TR

SHE EXITED THE VEHICLE TO LOOK FOR A FAILURE BUT DID NOT NOTICE ANY SO SHE PROCEEDED TO HER DESTINATION; HOWEVER, NOISE BECAME LOUDER. WHEN THE CONTACT REACHED HER DESTINATION SHE DISCOVERED THAT THE CRANK SHAFT PULLEY WAS LAYING IN THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY AND A MECHANIC STATED THAT THE SERPENTINE BELT WAS DAMAGED AND WAS NO LONGER ON THE PULLEY. THE VEHICLE IS BEING REPAIRED AT A COST OF $700.00. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
ON SATURDAY APRIL 18, 2009 MY DAUGHTER CALLED TO SAY THAT HER CAR WAS HARD TO STEER. SHE PULLED OVER AND HER MAIN BELT HAD COME OFF, WHICH IN TURN CAUSED THE CAR TO OVERHEAT. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND TURNING THE IGNITION OVER, THE BELT FELL OFF AGAIN AND SO DID THE PULLEY ON THE HARMONIC BALANCER. WE HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A SHOP. UPON ARRIVING AT THE SHOP I WAS TOLD THAT THE HARMONIC BALANCER BROKE OFF THE CRANK SHAFT. WHEN THE NEW PART ARRIVED YOU COULD CLEARLY SEE THAT IT HAS BEEN REDESIGNED. WE PAID $600 TO HAVE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS DONE. I WAS TOLD BY OUR MECHANIC THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS AND THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON IT. I HOPE THIS WILL MAKE THAT HAPPEN. *TR
