JUST OUT OF THE BLUE, I STARTED HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH MY STEERING. FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS, I HAD TO CONSTANTLY REPLACE POWER STEERING FLUID. WHAT REALLY SCARED ME WAS WHEN I HAD TO TRAVEL OUT OF STATE TO GET BACK HOME. I PUT IN POWER STEERING FLUID AND IT JUST DISAPPEARED RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY EYES. IT WAS AT THAT TIME I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE WAS AMAZED WHEN HE SAW MY POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKING OUT OF THE RACK. THE SEAL HAD BROKEN BADLY. HE INFORMED ME THAT THE RACK PINION HAD TO BE REPLACED. I EXPECT I WOULD EVENTUALLY HAVE CAR PROBLEMS AS WITH ANYONE ELSE BUT I ALMOST FELL TO GROUND WHEN I WAS TOLD HOW MUCH IT WAS GOING TO TAKE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I AM JUST REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH FORD. I HAVE ALWAYS SPOKE VERY HIGHLY OF FORD AND I AM SURE I STILL WILL AND I AM SURE MY NEXT VEHICLE WILL BE A FORD. I JUST FOUND IT SO HARD TO BELIEVE THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR SOMETHING THIS MAJOR SO SOON. SAD THING IS, I FEEL EVEN WORSE AFTER LEARNING THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER CONSUMERS WHO HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS AMAZED TO FIND THERE WAS SO MANY OTHERS. EVEN NOW, MY CAR DOES NOT FEEL THE SAME. I HAVE GOT TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE MECHANICS BECAUSE THE WHEEL HAS STARTED TO TIGHTEN UP AGAIN.
TRANSMISSION ISSUES NOT RESOLVED. IN AUGUST OF 2002(65,445 MILES), REPLACED A SENSOR AND SLIPPING TRANSMISSION WAS FIXED. IN OCTOBER OF 2003 REPLACED TRANSMISSION (86,150 MILES) AND PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED CONSUMER FELT PULSATION AND VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING. THE ABS LIGHT STAYED ON AT ALL TIMES, AND THERE WAS A HUMMING COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. *AK
FUEL PUMP FAILURE. 2 TIMES. FIRST TIME AFTER 3 HOURS I WAS ABLE TO GET CAR HOME. 2 ED TIME I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO DEALER. BILL WAS OVER $ 600.00 WITH TOWING. CALL TO FORD 800# LISTED ON THIS SITE AND THEY SAID NO RECALL AND NO RECOURSE AS OF NOW..
THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 50,000 MILES AND WAS REPLACED. A SECOND TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AND IT HAS CURRENTLY FAILED. THE CONSUMER WAS GIVEN A 3 YEAR/36000 MILES WARRANTY, WHICHEVER CAME FIRST. ALSO, TRANSMISSION WAS LEAKING FLUID. HE TOOK VEHICLE TO THE MECHANIC/DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THAT HE HAD BAD HUB SEALS THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED REPLACING AT THE TUNE OF $1200.00. THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN LEAKING FOR 2 WEEKS. *AK
POWER STEERING SQUEAKS AND MAKES NOISES WHEN TURNING CORNERS. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER, AND CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT POWER STEERING PUMP WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY.*AK CONSUMER NOTED THEY WOULDN'T REPAIR THE PUMP AT FIRST, BUT AFTER A FEW PHONE CALLS, THEY REPLACED IT. IT STARTED TO RUN FINE AFTERWARDS. *PH
THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ACTIVATE WHILE THE SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION.
WHILE DRIVING AT 35MPH CAR WOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT INTO THE NEXT GEAR. THE MORE ACCELARATION WAS ATTEMPTED, THE HARDER THE ENGINE PUSHED AND THE HIGHER THE RPMS WENT WITHOUT CHANGING GEAR. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP WHO HAVE YET TO LOOK AT PROBLEM.*AK
MY 1999 FPRD TAURUS SE WITH 47,995 MILES HAD THE POWER STEERING PUMP BREAK AND SPRAY POWER STEEING FLUID THROUGHTOUT THE CAR, THE RACK AND PINION STEERING IS GONE, LEAKING EVERYWHERE, AND THE DEFROST, FAN, AND BLOWER HAVE STOPPED WORKING.*AK
THE TRANSMISSION WOULD SLIP OCCASIONALLY BUT WE DID NOT THINK MUCH ABOUT IT UNTIL ONE NIGHT MY HUHSBAND WAS DRIVING AND HE STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN AND WHEN HE TRIED TO GO AGAIN HE HEARD A POPPING SOUND AND THE CAR WILL NOT MOVE FORWARD! WHEN THE CAR WAS PUT IN ANY DRIVE GEAR YOU COULD HEAR GRINDING.
IN A 1999 FORD TAURUS SE, MY 6 YEAR OLD SON BECAME TRAPPED IN A SEAT BELT THAT WAS NOT EVEN BUCKLED. AFTER ARRIVING HOME AT 9 P.M. MY SON HAD JUST UNBUCKLED HIS SEAT BELT WHEN SOMEHOW HE PULLED THE SEAT BELT OVER HIM AND THE SEAT BELT WRAPPED AROUND HIM AND IT WAS AROUND HIS WAIST AND BACK. THE SEAT BELT JUST KEPT GETTING TIGHTER ON HIM AND WOULD NOT RELEASE JUST LIKE A COWBOYS LASOE. ANY SLACK I COULD GET WAS GOING UP IN THE SHOULDER RESTAINT. THE BELT WOULD NOT GIVE ME ANY SLACK. THIS WAS IN THE REAR SEAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. AFTER IT GOT SO TIGHT THAT MY SON WAS CRYING IN PAIN AND PANIC, I FINALLY HAD TO CUT THE SEAT BELT TO FREE MY SON. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED. WHY IS THERE NO SLACK GIVEN ON THE SEAT BELT ESPECIALLY IN A PARKED CAR. THE BELT SHOULD NOT KEEP LOCKING AND TAKING UP SLACK. THIS IS AN UNSEEN DANGER LURKING THAT COULD ENTRAP A CHILD. THE BELT WILL ENTRAP A CHILD WITHOUT BEING SECURED IN THE BUCKLE. BEWARE!!
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE BEHIND MY HOUSE, THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING BROKE. THIS CAUSED THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TIRE TO PUNCTURE AND INSTANTLY LOSE ALL PRESSURE. ABOUT ONE RING OF THE COIL BROKE OFF AND THE COIL REMAINING ON THE CAR HAD THE SHARP END THAT PIERCED THE TIRE.

CONSUMER STATES RACK AND PINION STEERING WAS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY, CAUSING STEERING TO FAIL. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
CONSUMER STATES THAT AFTER DRIVING VEHICLE FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME COOLANT LEAKES OUT ONTO THE GROUND WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED. ALSO WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLES ACCELERATES WITHOUT ANY WARNING ,AND VEHICLE STALLS WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED. *AK
THE LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING SNAPPED. MY CAR HAD ONLY 51,377 MILES. I HAD TO HAVE BOTH COIL SPRINGS, 2 GAS STRUTS, 2 UPPER PIVOT STRUT MOUNTS, 2 SWAY BAR LINKS, AND 1 CONTINENTAL LEFT FRONT TIRE WITH ONLY 5,000 MILES ON IT REPLACED. IT COST $ 1,204.93. IT WOULD BE NICE TO GET REIMBURSED FOR IT. I'VE HEARD THIS HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL FORD MODELS. THE PLACE THAT I TOOK IT TO SAID THEY DID A TAURUS FOR THE SAME EXACT REASON THE WEEK BEFORE.*AK
WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE GARAGE, THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, IT PUNCTURED THE FRONT TIRES AND DAMAGED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE RIM. THE CAUSE HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *LA
I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN WRECKED. AT 44,000 MILES THE RACK AND PINION SEALS BEGAN LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID INTO THE CV BOOTS. THE FIRST SYMPTOM WAS LOSS OF POWER STEERING FLUID, PUMP NOISE, AND PUMP OVERHEATING. THE RACK AND PINION IS GOING TO GET REPLACED AND THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP IS GOING TO TRY TO GET FORD TO PAY FOR PART OF THE REPAIR. THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY.*AK
RACK AND PINION STEERING FAILED WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. UPON REPAIR, MECHANIC ADVISED THAT RACK AND PINION HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPLACED.*AK
WHILE DRIVING 2 MPH, THE DRIVER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND PULLED OVER. THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT COIL SPRING WAS BROKEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *JB
I WAS MAKING A TURN FROM A MAIN STREET ONTO A SIDE ROAD WHEN MY ENGINE FAILED. I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY A TRUCK MAKING THE SAME TURN. THE ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE THE TIMING GEAR ON ONE OF THE INTAKE CAMSHAFTS SHEARED OFF OF THE SHAFT. THIS DESTROYED THE ENGINE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 1996-1999 FORD SHO'S.*AK
WHEN THE VEHICLE A/C WAS ON A ROTTEN FOOD SMELL EMITTED THROUGH THE VENTS AND INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE LEAKED COOLANT WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT AND THE ENGINE TO SEIZE. THE VEHICLES COOLANT LIGHT DID NOT ILLUMINATE BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT DID. THE DEALER COULD NOT EXPLAIN THE LOSS OF COOLANT THEREFORE THE REPAIRS WERE NOT MADE. *AK *PH *NLM
THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *AK *TS *JB
WHILE DRIVING AT A SLOW RATE OF SPEED, BROKEN SPRING PUNCTURED LEFT FRONT TIRE, NECESSITATING THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SPRING, TIRE, STRUT, STRUT MOUNTING BEARING AND LEFT FRONT SWAY BAR LINK. RIGHT SIDE STRUT AND SPRING WERE ALSO REPLCED AT THIS TIME.*AK
RACK AND PINION WENT OUT AT 84K MILES - $750-$800 FOR REPAIR. AFTER READING THE 30+ OTHER COMPLAINTS, I'D FIGURED I WOULD ADD MINE AS WELL. *JB
THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER AND STILL SAME PROBLEM RECURRING, LEAKING.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT 20 MPH CONSUMER HEARD A NOISE NEAR THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, AND IT BECAME HARD TO STEER. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME AND CALLED A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT POWER STEERING PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. FUEL PUMP HAD BEEN REPLACED FOUR TIMES SINCE OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. *AK
SWAYBAR ENDLINKS ARE JUNK BUT DEALER INSISTS OEM ONLY WAY TO GO. AODX TRANSMISSION KICKS IN AND OUT. NOW EXPERIENCING P0500 CODE (FAULTY SPEED SENSOR)? REAR BRAKES HAVE ALWAYS SQUEELED (EVEN WITH OEM PADS) HAVE HAD TWO APPARENT BLOWOUTS OF PASS SIDE SEAL IN RACK.
FRONT COIL SPRINGS SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AND DAMAGED THE BEARINGS. *AK THE CONSUMER'S WIFE WAS DRIVING WHEN SHE HEARD A LOUD BANG AND SMELLED RUBBER. THE SERVICE DEALER FOUND A BROKEN SPRING ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, LIGHT SCUFF MARKS ON THE TIRE, AND A DAMAGED BEARING. *SCC *JB
THERE WERE STEERING POWER PROBLEMS. WHILE DRIVING, THE POWER STEERING HAD GONE OUT, AND THE CONSUMER WAS NOT ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. *AK THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AS THE CONSUMER HAD TAKEN A YIELD TO THE RIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE STEERING WAS STIFF AND DIFFICULT ON TURNS, ESPECIALLY RIGHT TURNS. THE FRONT SEAL WAS FOUND BUSTED AND LEAKED OUT OF THE CLUSTER COVER. *SCC *JB
LEFT FRONT COIL SPRING FAILED CUTTING THE TIRE OPEN CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO GO OFF THE ROAD. *NM
POWER STEERING RACK FAILED. SEALS LET GO. *NLM
THE COIL SPRING POPPED OUT AND FRACTURED THE DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK THE SPRINGS ON BOTH DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER SIDE POPPED OUT AND DAMAGED THE TIRE. BOTH SPRINGS AND TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED. *PH *JB
1999 FORD TAURUS SE INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT AND AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.*MR CONSUMER SUSTAINED CHEST AND RIB PAIN. VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *PH
THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING BROKE AND THE SHARP BROKEN EDGE SLICED THE TIRE OF OUR 1999 FORD TAURUS SEDAN, VIN #[XXX]. THE BOTTOM OF THE CAR SUDDENLY DROPPED AND THE TIRE BLEW OUT. WE WERE VERY, VERY LUCKY THAT THIS OCCURRED WHILE MY WIFE WAS SLOWLY BACKING OUT OF OUR DRIVEWAY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR OTHER CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. BUT IT WAS A TERRIFYING CLOSE MISS WITH A HORRIFIC CATASTROPHE. IF THE SPRING HAD BROKEN ONLY A SHORT TIME LATER, IT IS EXTREMELY LIKELY THAT MY WIFE AND SEVERAL OTHERS WOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR AT LEAST SERIOUSLY INJURED. SHE WAS JUST STARTING ON A DRIVE INTO BOSTON VIA ROUTE I93, A HEAVILY USED EXPRESSWAY. IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE SPRING HAD BROKEN WHILE THE CAR WAS MOVING AT EXPRESSWAY SPEED AND SURROUNDED BY OTHER FAST MOVING VEHICLES. WE PURCHASED THE CAR APRIL 25, 2000 FROM HEWLETT PACKARD COMPANY WHERE IT HAD BEEN USED AS A COMPANY CAR ASSIGNED TO ONE OF THE MANAGERS. THE ODOMETER READ 5,352 THEN. MOST OF OUR DRIVING HAS BEEN DONE AROUND SUBURBAN BOSTON WHERE THE ROADS ARE WELL SURFACED AND MAINTAINED. ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT (MAY 28) THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED BY IVERSEN FORD, 257 BOSTON ROAD, NORTH BILLERICA, MA. THE FRONT STABILIZER BARS AND LEFT INNER AXLE SEAL HAD BEEN REPLACED. I HAVE THE BROKEN SPRING AND THE ORIGINAL UNBROKEN SPRING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE IN MY POSSESSION. I ALSO HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE SPRING AND SLASHED TIRE. FORD REFUSED TO ANALYZE THE BROKEN SPRING DESPITE TWO LETTERS URGING THEM TO DO SO. FORD ALSO REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE SPRING REPLACEMENT. AS FAR AS I CAN DETERMINE, FORD HAS NOT SERIOUSLY INVESTIGATED THIS MATTER EITHER WITH REGARD TO DEFECTS IN THE COIL SPRING ITSELF OR WITH REGARD TO SERVICE PROCEDURES THAT COULD LEAD TO SPRING FAILURES. *JB INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

TRANSMISSON IS CAUSING VEHICLE TO STAY IN NEUTRAL LIKE GEAR WHILE ACCELORATING, HIGH RPM'S REACHED WITHOUT CHANGING GEARS OR PICKING UP SPEED. SPEEDOMETOR GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING FROM TIME TO TIME USUALLY DURING TRANSMISSION FAILURE. TOOK TO SPECIALIST WHO QUOTED $2,300 TO FIX NOW MORE IF COMPLETELY GOES OUT. SPECIALIST STATED IT WAS THE THIRD 1999 FORD TAURUS SEEN THIS YEAR ALONE. *AK
WHILE GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE, THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD CRACK, AND FOUND THE LEFT SIDE COIL SPRING PUNCTURED THE TIRE. DEALER NOTIFIED. *AK THE FRONT COIL SPRING AND SWAY BAR WERE REPLACED. *TT *JB

WHILE DRIVING AND WITHOUT WARNING THE RACK AND PINION SNAPPED AND CAUSED THE CONSUMER TO LOSE STEERING CONTROL. *NLM. *AK
STEERING RACK AND PINION HAD TO BE REPLACED. ALSO POWER STEERING PUMP DUE TO BLOWN SEAL IN STEERING RACK WERE REPLACED. *TT
WHILE DRIVING, THE FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURED AND CUT THROUGH THE TIRE. *JB *TS *JB
THE TIRES ARE WEARING OUT VERY QUICKLY AND THE TREAD IS STARTING TO SEPARATE.*AK
POWER STEERING FAILED DUE TO BROKEN SEAL IN STEERING RACK. SPENT $711 TO REPLACE. APPEARS TO BE FREQUENT OCCURRENCE ON MANY FORDS. SHOULD RECALL. *NLM
TWO HEAD GASKETS BLEW WITH MY 1999 FORD TAURUS VIN #[XXX] AT 46,000 MILES HAVE DETAILED AND EXCELLENT MAINTENANCE ON THIS VEHICLE. THERMOSTAT WAS COOKED AND NO OVERHEATING, JUST LOST OF HEAT. MY FORD TAURUS 1999 SE-MODEL, VIN# [XXX], HAS 69,095 AND THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS ARE SHOT. MY MECHANIC SAYS THIS IS LOW MILEAGE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN; HOWEVER HE HAS SEEN A TREND WITH THE FORD TAURUS HAVING THIS PROBLEM.
