ON AUGUST 5TH, WHILE DRIVING NORTH ON HWY 378 THE CAR STARTING SLOWING DOWN AS IF TO STOP, THEN IT COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. WE WERE DRIVING ABOUT 30 MPH AT THE TIME. AFTER SHUTTING OFF I CONTINUE TO TRY AND GET IT TO FIRE UP BUT IT DIDN'T UNTIL 1HR. LATER. AFTER REACHING MY DESTINATION, I WAITED 3 HRS. TO CRANK BUT, I COULDN'T. I'VE REPLACED NEW FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AND GAS TANK, ALONG WITH A NEW FILTER. I DID ALL THIS AND THE CAR STILL WON'T RUN. FRUSTRATED, PLEASE HELP!!!!!
THIS HAS HAPPENED OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS. THE FIRST TIME WAS AT A FREEWAY SPEED OF 65 MPH AND THE SECOND TIME HAPPENED ON A SIDE STREET AT A SPEED OF 40 MPH. AS I RELEASED THE GAS PEDDLE THE CAR MAINTAINED THE SPEED OR ACCELERATED ON IT'S OWN. UPDATED 12/08/2017*CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 04V106000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 198,938.
DROVE CAR ABOUT 4 MILES. NO PROBLEMS. WHEN PARKED IT WAS SMOKING REAL BAD UNDER HOOD THEN CAUGHT ON FIRE. FIREMAN SAID IT WAS ELECTRICAL. IT GAVE NO WARNING. AS I LOOKED ON THIS WEBSITE I HAVE SEEN THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON THAT HAS HAD THIS HAPPEN. MY CAR IS TOTALED AND I AM WITHOUT A VEHICLE. NOW WHAT WILL FORD DO ABOUT THAT? I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. THANK GOD I WASN'T.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY (50 - 60 MPH), THE CAR STALLS, ALL THE LIGHTS TURN OFF INCLUDING THE HAZARD FLASHERS. BRAKING AND STEERING THEN BECOME VERY DIFFICULT. I ALWAYS PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND ATTEMPT TO COAST TO A SAFE PARKING LOCATION. I AM ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES IMMEDIATELY, SOMETIMES AFTER PROLONGED PERIODS. SO FAR, THE STALL PROBLEM HAS NEVER OCCURRED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT REST. SOMETIMES THE DOOR LOCKS WILL BRIEFLY "CHATTER" AS THE SOLENOIDS MYSTERIOUSLY ACTIVATE. THIS CAN OCCUR WHILE DRIVING OR IDLING. THE PROBLEM FIRST OCCURRED IN JUNE 2015. THEN RECURRED RANDOMLY ONCE EVERY 2-3 WEEKS. RECENTLY, THE PROBLEM OCCURS 2-3 TIMES IN A DAY. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT PERSIST LONG ENOUGH TO BE DIAGNOSED.
ON APRIL 30 2015 I WAS HIT HEAD ON BY 1999 DODGE DAKOTA I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP. THE SPEED LIMIT WHERE 50 MPH ON THAT ROAD. THE WHOLE FRONT OF MY CAR IS SMASHED IN FROM THE FORCE OF HOW HARD HE HIT ME AND MY AIRBAGS DID NOT GO OFF. MY CAR SPUN 180. I WAS FACING THE WAY I WAS COMING FROM. I GOT A SPRAINED KNEE AND SOME BUMPS AND BRUISES. *TR
WHEN IT GETS COLD OUTSIDE, THE DOOR LATCH BECOMES STUCK AND THE DOOR WILL NOT LATCH AND CLOSE PROPERLY AND THE DOOR FLIES OPEN. THE PASSENGER DOOR LATCH WILL DO THE SAME THING. SO YOU HAVE TO DRIVE HOLDING THE DOOR SHUT UNTIL THE DOOR LATCH/SENSOR DECIDES TO UNFREEZE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD BECAUSE YOU MAY THINK THE DOOR IS SHUT BECAUSE THE SENSOR LIGHT GOES OFF AND THEN YOU START TO DRIVE AND THE DOOR FLIES OPEN. IF YOU LOOK ONLINE, SEVERAL MODEL YEARS FROM 1997 AND UP OF THE TAURUS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING AS WELL AS THE MERCURY SABLE AND A FEW OTHER OLDER FORD MODELS. I JUST READ ONLINE THAT THEY RECALLED 2010-2013 FOR DOOR LATCH ISSUES. PLEASE MAKE THEM EXTEND THE RECALL FOR OLDER FORD TAURUS BEFORE SOMEBODY DIES OR GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED. *TR
OTHER CAR WAS APPROACHING HEAD ON I SWERVED TO AVOID HEAD ON COLLISION GOING 45 MPH FLEW INTO A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY HIT THEIR PARKED VAN WHICH SPUN SIDE WAYS. MY DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY ONLY THE PASSENGER SIDE WORKED. *TR
TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED IN TRANSMISSION, WHICH LED TO TOTAL FAILURE. ON HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH WHEN VEHICLE STARTED TO SLOW WHILE DRIVING. GOT TO SHOULDER, AND HAD CAR TOWED. THIS IS COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. FORD WILL NOT RECALL OR HELP. SPLINE IS TO THIN, AND, OUT OF SPEC. IN REGARD TO THICKNESS. *TR
I BOUGHT A CAR FROM TRI STAR AUTO BROKERS ([XXX]), WITH A TWO YEAR CONTRACT ($217/MONTH) TO PAY THE CAR OFF. THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT LIKE CUSTOMERS TO PAY AT THE OFFICE, WE WERE TOLD TO SEND OUR PAYMENTS TO THE P.O. BOX GIVEN BY THEM: P.O. BOX 90252, PORTLAND, OR 97290. I SPOKE WITH [XXX], WHO HANDLES THE PAYMENTS THREE MONTHS AGO IN REGARDS TO THE BALANCE I OWE. ACCORDING TO HER, I HAD EITHER THIS LAST PAYMENT IN DECEMBER OR I MAY HAVE A SMALL AMOUNT DUE IN JANUARY THEN I'D BE ABLE TO RECEIVE MY TITLE. I WENT IN ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, TO SEE IF I COULD JUST PAY THE CAR OFF AND GET MY TITLE. HOWEVER, WHEN I GET THERE, I'M TOLD THE DEALERSHIP HAS NEW OWNERS, AND I NEEDED TO CONTACT THE DMV ON INFORMATION ON MY VEHICLE AND WHAT TO DO. I CALLED THE DMV AND WAS TOLD TO FILL THIS FORM OUT AND SOMEONE WOULD CONTACT ME SOON. IF ANY OTHER INFORMATION IS NEEDED, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT/HOW/WHERE TO SEND IT. COMING DOWN POWAY ROAD IN POWAY, CA IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP AND IT SEEMED THE ENGINE WAS REVVING. I PULLED OVER TO A SAFE TURNOUT AND IT WAS DIFFICULT TO STOP COMPLETELY AS THE BRAKES WERE SPONGY. WHEN I PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK, THE ENGINE SPEED WAS OVER 2500 RPM. I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AND COULD SMELL THE BRAKES. SUSPECTING A STUCK THROTTLE, I REMOVED THE PROTECTIVE COVER AND THE ACCELERATOR WAS BEING HELD OPEN BY THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WHICH HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED AT THE THROTTLE LINKAGE AREA. I REMOVED THE ASSEMBLY AND PUSHED IT ASIDE SO WE COULD CONTINUE DRIVING. I CONSIDER THIS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS WE WERE DRIVING DOWN A GRADE AND I WAS TRYING TO APPLY THE BRAKES AT THE SAME TIME THE ENGINE WAS PUSHING US FASTER. SINCE IT WAS SATURDAY I DRIVE TO THE DEALER. I KNEW THERE HAD BEEN A SIMILAR RECALL I CHECKED TO SEE IF OUR VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED AND IT WAS NOT BUT THE SERVICE ADVISOR WAS VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE RECALL WHICH FORD HAD DONE AS "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM 13B04" WHICH HE PROVIDED ME A COPY OF. I HAVE SEEN THIS IN MY SON'S 2002 FORD TAURUS ALSO. THE CLIP THAT HOLDS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE TO THE THROTTLE LINKAGE DISCONNECTS AND BECAUSE OF THE STIFFNESS, ACTUALLY PREVENTS THE ACCELERATOR LINKAGE FROM RETURNING TO IDLE. ALTHOUGH IT HAS NOT FAILED, I CAN SEE THE SAME LINKAGE ON MY 2003 MERCURY SABLE WHICH OF COURSE IS A REPACKAGED TAURUS. THIS CLIP IS A VERY POOR DESIGN IN THAT IT DOES NOT DO A GOOD JOB OF HOLDING ONTO THE ACCELERATOR PIN. FROM OBSERVATION I KNOW THAT IT WAS USED IN AT LEAST 3 MODEL YEARS AND PERHAPS MORE. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE THAN A COURTESY FIX AS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AS THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE SHOWN. IT SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE ANY VEHICLE THAT USED THIS DESIGN. IT'S NOT A QUESTION OF IF IT WILL FAIL BUT AS OUR EXPERIENCE TODAY SHOWS, WHEN. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE CONTACT WAS NOTIFIED OF A LARGE HOLE IN THE FLOOR BOARD ON THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE. ALSO, THERE WAS A SMALL HOLE ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OF REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,000.
MY 2004 FORD TAURUS ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN QUITE A FEW TIMES. AFTER GOGGLING THE PROBLEM I SAW THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL. I CALLED FORD & WAS TOLD MY CAR WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THEY ALSO TOLD ME TO GET IT FIXED BECAUSE IT COULD BE DANGEROUS. I KNOW THAT BECAUSE I WAS ALMOST IN A FEW ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. I'D HAVE TO PULL OVER, IF NOT AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, PUT THE CAR IN PARK & HIT THE ACCELERATOR A FEW TIMES. I ACTUALLY HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF & BACK ON ONCE TO GET THE RPMS DOWN. I HAD THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE TOTALLY REMOVED. THE CRUISE HADN'T WORKED IN YRS. MY MOM OWNED THE CAR BEFORE I DID. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHY MY TAURUS WASN'T IN THE RECALL. *TR
WHEN I DRIVE, THE GAS PEDAL WILL GET STUCK AND EITHER STAY AT THE SPEED WITHOUT ME SETTING CRUISE CONTROL OR IT MAY ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. TO GET IT LOOSE, I HAVE TO JIGGLE THE GAS PEDAL (WHICH CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHILE DRIVING), THIS USUALLY STOPS THE PROBLEM BUT I'M CONCERNED THAT SOMEDAY IT WILL STOP WORKING AND I WON'T BE ABLE TO CONTROL THIS ANYMORE. IF I PUT THE CAR IN PARK OR NEUTRAL IT INCREASES THE RPM FROM 1 TO 3 OR 4. ALSO IF THE RPM ARE INCREASED WHILE IN PARK IT MAKES IT SUPER HARD TO SHIFT TO DRIVE AND IS STRESSFUL TO MY TRANSMISSION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AFTER BEING INVOLVED IN A CRASH. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WAS ONE INJURY SUSTAINED. THE SPECIFICS OF HOW THE CRASH OCCURRED WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I WAS ACCELERATING AFTER BEING STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND NOTICED THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING AFTER TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE PEDAL. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AFTER REMOVING THE BRAKE. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND IT WENT UP TO 3000RPM. I PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE AND THE CAR CORRECTED ONCE DRIVE WAS RE-ENGAGED. THE CRUISE CONTROL IN THE CAR WILL NOT TURN ON AND IF IT DOES IT WILL NOT SET AN ACCELERATION. THE PROBLEM WAS NOTED EARLIER IN THE YEAR BUT PUSHED OFF AS A FLUKE. THEN AFTER DOING RESEARCH I SEE THAT MOST TAURUS' HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD THEY WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THERE IS NO RECALL. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AND SHOULD BE ISSUED A RECALL. PERHAPS IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT THERE WILL BE MORE INVESTIGATION INTO THE PROBLEM. *TR
TOOK CAR TO BROOKER FORD DEALERSHIP ON 7/15/14 COMPLAINING ABOUT GAS PEDAL STICKING, MOTOR RACING TO OVER 6000 RPMS. HAD COME CLOSE TO HITTING CARS IN FRONT OF ME SEVERAL TIMES WHILE PUSHING BRAKE PEDAL DOWN HARD. THEY CHECKED CAR AND REPLACED AIR CONTROL VALVE. TOTAL COST TO ME WAS $352.77. A BIG CHUNK OUT OF MY S.S. NOW THE SAME PROBLEM HAS RETURNED, BUT IS MUCH WORSE THIS TIME AND IS MUCH HARDER TO TAP PEDAL HARD TO TRY AND GET IT TO SLOW DOWN. WILL BE GOING BACK TO DEALERSHIP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD TAURUS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY. WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE THROTTLE WOULD CONTINUE TO REV INTERMITTENTLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE CONTROL CABLES DETACHED FROM THE THROTTLE BODY AND SUBSEQUENTLY INTERFERED WITH THE THROTTLE FULLY CLOSING TO THE IDLE POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME A COUPLE OF TIMES ALREADY. I WAS DRIVING BEHIND MY BOYFRIEND WE WHERE HEADED TO HIS HOUSE, AND MY CAR STARTED ACCELERATING AT A FAST UNUSUAL PACE. HE STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME AT A STOP LIGHT, AND AS I WAS PRESSING ON MY BRAKES THERE WAS A COUPLE OF LOUD CLUNKS COMING FROM INSIDE MY ENGINE. I WAS JUST RIDING MY BRAKES, LUCKILY THE CAR WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND COME TO A STOP. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, IT WAS BEHAVING NORMALLY. I'VE LOOKED THIS UP, AND NOTICED THAT THIS WAS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH ALMOST ALL MODELS OF FORD TAURUS. YET THERE IS NO RECALL? I HOPE YOU REALIZE HOW DANGEROUS THIS PROBLEM ACTUALLY IS, AND I HOPE THAT SOMETHING IS DONE ABOUT IT SOON. *TR
I OWN A 2004 FORD TAURUS SEL STATION WAGON. THE PASSENGER FLOOR HAS RUSTED THROUGH. IT APPEARS THAT THE OVER TIME WATER HAS LEAKED IN THROUGH A FITTING WHERE CLIMATE CONTROL PIPES ENTER THROUGH THE FIREWALL. THE SUSPENSION MOUNT ON THE PASSENGER ALSO HAS A LOT OF RUST AND WILL PROBABLY FAIL IN THE NEXT YEAR OR SO. THIS SUSPENSION MOUNT IN THE SAME AREA WHERE THE WATER HAD BEEN SITTING DUE TO THE FIREWALL LEAKAGE. I LOOKED FOR ANY RECALLS FOR 2004 AND COULD NOT FIND ANY. I DID SEE A SIMILAR RECALL FOR OLDER TAURUS' FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 40,000 MILES AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN KEPT IN A GARGAGE, SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN PERFORMED. NOT ABUSED IN ANY WAY. SINCE THIS IS AND WILL BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE, I WANTED TO GET YOUR OPINION. THIS IS CLEARLY A DESIGN DEFECT, ESPECIALLY SINCE OLD TAURUS' ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE SAME BODY/CHASSIS. WE ARE THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS CAR, THE FIRST OWNERS WERE MY PARENTS SO WE KNOW THE VEHICLE HISTORY. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED BY FORD? I HAVE PHOTOS OF THE PROBLEMS. *TR

THE LOCAL MECHANIC PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC WHICH LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE CRUISE CONTROL CLIP ATTACHED TO THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE DEALER DISCONNECTED THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 166,000.
WHEN GOING FROM 1ST TO 2ND THERE WAS A LOUD AND HARD BUMP, TRANSMISSION REPAIRED NOW AFTER HAVING CAR BACK FOR 1 WEEK WHEN I PUT IT IN REVERSE IT HARDLY MOVES AND SHUDDERS AND SHAKES. *TR
VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY GAINED SPEED WHILE BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY CAUSING COLLISION WITH MAILBOX BEFORE CAR COULD BE BRAKE TO STOP. PRIOR TO THIS THE VEHICLE SPEED WOULD REMAIN CONSTANT WHEN FOOT WAS REMOVED FROM ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 35MPH THEN THE CAR GAINED SPEED ON ITS OWN. VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL BY BRAKING EVEN AS THE IDLE SURGED. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AUTONATION FORD OF KATY WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED "ROLLING IDLE FROM PROPORTIONING VALVE LEAKING AT BACK OF INTAKE" AS THE CAUSE. WORK WAS NOT PERFORMED BECAUSE OUR SON WHO HAPPENED TO BE IN TOWN SAW THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HAD BECOME DETACHED FROM THE THROTTLE. MY SON REATTACHED THE CABLE AND THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY FURTHER ISSUES WITH A STUCK IDLE OR UNATTENDED ACCELERATION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 FORD TAURUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATE INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL DISCONNECTED AND BECAME LODGE ON THE THROTTLE. AS A RESULT, THE CRUISE CONTROL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 148,035.
ON JUNE 4, 2014 WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED THE ENGINE AND ALL POWER DIED ON MY 2004 FORD TAURUS LX. ALL OPERATION AND GAUGES OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPERATING AS DESIGNED BEFORE THE INCIDENT AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT A FAILURE WAS IMMINENT. AFTER THE ENGINE DIED ALL STEERING AND BREAKING BECAME UNRESPONSIVE ALMOST TO THE POINT OF BEING INOPERABLE. THE CAR WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT INCIDENT AND TOWED TO AN AUTO-REPAIR SHOP. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THE CODES ON THE CAR INDICATED THAT THE PATS (PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM) SHUT DOWN THE CAR AS IT THOUGHT IT WAS BEING STOLEN. SPEAKING WITH FORD DEALERSHIPS THIS IS APPARENTLY A KNOWN ISSUE. *TR
HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR 1 WEEK. WHILE REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGS, FOUND THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE THROTTLE, WHICH EXPLAINED WHY THE CRUISE DIDN'T WORK. RECONNECTED THE CABLE. ON A TEST-DRIVE, HAD THE CRUISE SET AT 50. IN TESTING THE 3 RIGHT-SIDE CRUISE BUTTONS (RESUME, SET, COAST) THE CAR ACCELERATED PAST 65 ON ITS OWN. "OFF" BUTTON AND BRAKE PEDAL DID NOT DISCONNECT CRUISE SYSTEM. RODE THE BRAKES TO A STOP AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. STARTED THE ENGINE AND IT REVVED UP TO 3,000 WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE PEDAL. ENGINE RETURNED TO NORMAL IDLE SPEED AFTER A BLIP OR TWO ON THE GAS PEDAL. CAREFULLY DROVE HOME AND CHECKED - THE CRUISE CABLE HAD COME UNDONE FROM THE THROTTLE AGAIN. UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THIS MODEL SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

TRANSMISSION LOST ALL GEARS WITH NO WARNING. *TR
DRIVING DOWN A SIDE STREET GOING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH. THE VEHICLE STARTED RACING AND SPEEDING UP. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AND COULD FEEL THE JERKING OF THE CAR FIGHTING TO SPEED UP. I PULLED OVER AND PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL WHICH CAUSED THE RPM METER TO RACE. I PUSHED HARD ON THE HARD ACCELERATOR AND LET OFF AND THAT STOPPED THE RPM'S FROM RACING. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING MORE AND MORE OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS. ONE TIME, I HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND WHEN I STARTED IT UP IT WAS STILL RACING. A COMBINATION OF PRESSING HARD ON THE ACCELERATOR (IN N) AND TURNING THE CAR OFF SEEMS TO HELP. THERE IS NOT ALWAYS A PLACE TO PULL OVER, THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. MY MECHANIC HAD NO IDEAS WHY THIS IS HAPPENING SO I RESEARCHING SOLUTIONS MYSELF. *TR
I WAS HEADED TO THE GROCERY STORE A LITTLE AFTER NOON AND WHEN I PULLED AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN AND ACCELERATED TOWARD 45 MPH THE RPM KEPT INCREASING AFTER I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR ONCE I REACHED THE DESIRED SPEED. THEY QUICKLY JUMPED TO BETWEEN 3000 AND 3500 RPM SO I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE AND THOUGHT IT WOULD STOP. IT DIDN'T. THE SECOND I LET GO OF THE BRAKES THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN QUICKLY. I PULLED OVER, TURNED THE CAR OFF, BUT WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON THE RPMS WENT HIGH AGAIN AS IF I WAS FLOORING THE GAS PEDAL. I TURNED AROUND AND CAUTIOUSLY WENT BACK HOME, RIDING THE BRAKES THE ENTIRE WAY (ALMOST 5 MILES) AND PARKED IT. THE NEXT DAY EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL.
CAR CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE AT MODERATE RATE WHEN FOOT IS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS STILL ABLE TO STOP THE CAR EASILY USING FOOT BRAKE, BUT WHEN STOPPED THE CAR WAS REVVING AT A MUCH HIGHER RATE THAN USUAL. NOT CLEAR YET WHETHER THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE. *TR
VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AFTER I HAD TAKEN MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL. IT REACHED APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH BEFORE I APPLIED THE BRAKES. IT RESPONDED TO THE BRAKES, BUT WAS DIFFICULT TO HOLD AT A STOP FOR A STOPLIGHT. PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK OR NEUTRAL CAUSED THE ENGINE TO REV TO 3,00 - 4,000 RPMS. THE PROBLEM RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES ON A 4 -5 MILE DRIVE. CAR WAS TAKEN TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HOLDING THE THROTTLE OPEN. CRUISE CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AND PROBLEM HAS NOT RECURRED. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE AND MENTIONED THE HIGH NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS SEEN ON THIS SITE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A PARKING LOT ON MARCH 17, 2014 IN THE LATE EVENING. MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE GAS OR THE BRAKE AS I WAS TRYING TO LET MY CAR SLOW ITSELF DOWN WHEN I REALIZED MY CAR WAS NOT SLOWING; IT WAS SPEEDING UP. I LOOKED AT MY SPEEDOMETER AND I WAS CRUISING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AT 45 MPH. I THEN APPLIED THE BRAKES AND REALIZED THE RPM'S WERE STAYING ABOVE 2,500. AT THIS POINT I STARTED TO PANIC A LITTLE SINCE I FELT LIKE I WAS FIGHTING MY CAR AS IT WANTED TO ACCELERATE AND AS I WAS GETTING CLOSER TO LOTS OF PARKED CARS AND A BUILDING WHICH SCREAMED ACCIDENT. I DROVE IT AROUND THE PARKING LOT WITH THE BRAKES ON HARD AND I DECIDED TO PARK IT FAR AWAY FROM OTHER CARS. ONCE IN PARK THE CAR REVVED UP TO OVER 3,000 RPMS. AFTER IT DID THIS I DECIDED TO SHUT IT OFF. THINKING THAT MAYBE IT WOULD RESET ITSELF I TURNED IT BACK ON AND IT REVVED UP ONCE AGAIN PAST 3,000 RPMS. I DECIDED I SHOULDN'T DRIVE IT ANYMORE. THE NEXT DAY, MARCH 18TH, I HAD MY CAR TOWED AND TAKEN TO AN AUTO SHOP, WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE THAT BECAME DETACHED. THEY REATTACHED IT WHICH HOPEFULLY FIXES THE PROBLEM. WHEN I RETURNED HOME, I FOUND ONLINE THAT I WAS NOT ALONE OTHER TAURUSES WERE HAVING THIS ISSUE AND THAT A RECALL COULD BE POSSIBLE. I SEARCHED ON FORD'S WEBSITE AND NOTHING ON MY CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED. I AM SENDING A LETTER TO FORD TO SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS ISSUE. HOPEFULLY THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED BECAUSE I WOULD NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE OR TO ME AGAIN. *TR
DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AND THE CRUISE CONTROL STARTED SPEEDING UP WOULD NOT STOP AND WHEN BRAKES APPLIED IT CONTINUED TO REV THE ENGINE. I STOPPED THE AUTO AND IT WAS STILL RACING AND SQUEALING TIRES. I WAS TRYING TO STOP FOR A RED LIGHT. THE ENGINE RPM SUDDENLY INCREASED AND WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE THE RPM KEPT INCREASING. I SHIFTED FROM DRIVE TO PARK AND THE RPM STILL KEPT INCREASING. TO START DECELERATING ON A MULTIPLE-LANE FREEWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, I REMOVED MY FOOT COMPLETELY FROM THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND THAT INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN, THE CAR BEGAN TO GRADUALLY SPEED UP EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS NOT TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE SPEED ROSE FROM 45 TO 48 TO 52 MPH WITHOUT MY TOUCHING THE PEDAL. I THEN BRAKED, AND THE CAR SLOWED, ONLY TO RESUME SPEEDING UP WHEN I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE. AFTER I BRAKED AGAIN, HARDER, THE CAR SLOWED AND THE GHOST ACCELERATION PROBLEM WENT AWAY. HOWEVER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE 50-MILE FREEWAY TRIP. THE PEDAL SEEMED TO BE MECHANICALLY STICKING. THE PROBLEM DID NOT SEEM TO BE ELECTRONIC, ALTHOUGH I COULD NOT BE SURE. AFTER EXITING THE FREEWAY, THE ACCELERATOR GOT STUCK SEVERAL TIMES WHILE ON LOCAL ROADS. I WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE PROBLEM BY NOW AND WAS READY AT ANY TIME TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL IF NECESSARY. I DID SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL ONCE TO AVOID A POTENTIAL COLLISION WHEN APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION. WHILE THE CAR WAS IN NEUTRAL, I TRIED TAPPING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO SEE IF THAT WOULD UNSTICK IT. INSTEAD, THE RPMS MERELY INCREASED TO A HIGHER LEVEL, STICKING AGAIN AT THE HIGHER RATE. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR HOME, MOSTLY ON THE FREEWAY, WITHOUT ANY SERIOUS MISHAPS. I PREVIOUSLY HAD BEEN SOMEWHAT SKEPTICAL OF THE MUCH-REPORTED ACCELERATION PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES. HOWEVER, I CAN NOW SAY FROM EXPERIENCE THAT WHEN YOUR CAR HOLDS ITS SPEED OR SPEEDS UP AFTER YOU LIFT YOUR FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, IT'S A STRANGE AND UNSETTLING EXPERIENCE. I CAN EASILY IMAGINE SOME DRIVERS PANICKING. WE WERE LUCKY THAT I WAS DRIVING, AND NOT MY WIFE OR KIDS, WHO HAVE MUCH LESS DRIVING EXPERIENCE. AT HOME, I DISCOVERED ONLINE THAT FORD HAS RECALLED MANY 2000-2003 TAURUSES FOR STICKING-ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS. I CAN TELL YOU THAT IT'S A PROBLEM FOR OUR 2004 TAURUS AS WELL. *TR
THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN IN THE RIGHT LANE AND WHEN IT STARTED TO DRIFT TO THE SHOULDER, A CORRECTION WAS MADE TO BRING IT BACK BUT IT THEN DRIFTED TO THE LEFT LANE. A CORRECTION WAS MADE TO BRING IT RIGHT AND WHEN IT LINED UP AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO STRAIGHTEN IT OUT. AT THAT POINT THE CAR CONTINUED TO THE RIGHT AND WENT OFF THE ROAD. THE DRIVER LATER STATED THAT SHE DID NOT LOSE CONTROL BUT HAD NO CONTROL. WHEN THE CAR WAS BEING EMPTIED OF PERSONAL EFFECTS SINCE IT WAS TOTALED IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NO LONGER CONNECTED TO THE FRONT WHEELS BUT WOULD JUST SPIN. THE POLICE REFUSED TO DO A FOLLOW UP INTERVIEW WITH THE DRIVER AND WOULD NOT DOCUMENT THE CONDITION OF THE CAR AFTER THE ACCIDENT SAYING THAT THEY COULD NOT PROVE IF THE STEERING FAILED AND CAUSED THE ACCIDENT OR WAS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT. *TR
FAULTY GEM OR SMART JUNCTION BOX CAUSING ALL DOOR LOCKS AND TRUNK LID TO NOT PROPERLY WORK.ON OCCASION THE TRUNK WILL OPEN BY ITS SELF WHILE DRIVING. I CANNOT LOCK THE DOORS AND THE INTERIOR DOME LIGHT STAYS ON WHILE DRIVING AND AFTER THE CAR IS SHUT OFF. THIS HAS DRAINED MY BATTERY. DRIVING AT NIGHT IS VERY DISTRACTING WITH DOME LIGHT ON. I CANNOT TURN IT OFF AND WHEN I TOUCH THE COVER OF THE DOME LIGHT IT FEELS VERY HOT. I CANNOT TELL WHAT THE MILEAGE IS BECAUSE DASH FLASHES ALL DOORS AND TRUNK IS AJAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY DID A SCAN AND FOLLOWED SOME TYPE OF FORD TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN AND FOUND THE CARS SMART JUNCTION BOX OR GEM MODULE WAS THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD IT CANNOT BE FIXED BECAUSE THE PART IS DISCONTINUED, OBSOLETE AND NOT MADE ANY MORE AND NO AFTERMARKET PART EXISTS. I INQUIRED ABOUT A PART POSSIBLY FROM ANOTHER CAR OF THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL. I WAS TOLD THAT WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE THE SPECIFIC PART IN QUESTION WAS PROGRAMMED FOR MY CAR AND ITS COMPUTER. I TELEPHONED ANOTHER FORD DEALER AND SPOKE TO THE PARTS DEPT. I WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I WAS TOLD BY BOTH DEALERS THAT NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM OTHER THAN PULLING THE INTERIOR BULB OUT. THIS BY FAR DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP.
