THE ABS LIGHT ON MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR AND THE BRAKE LIGHT IS STAYING ON. I CHANGED THE BRAKES AND I'M STILL HAVING PROBLEMS. THREE TIMES I WAS DRIVING AND WHEN I WENT TO STOP THE BRAKES LOCKED UP ON ME AND I COULDN'T STOP. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DASHBOARD PANEL MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE WIRING HARNESS FUSE INSTALLED ACCORDING TO RECALL # 09V399000, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL. THE BRAKE FLUID LEAK CAUSED THE WIRING HARNESS IN THE DASHBOARD TO MALFUNCTION. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE BRAKE FLUID COULD HAVE ALSO LEAKED ONTO THE ABS MODULE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. 93,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING AN INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THIS FAILURE OCCURRED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V399000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE AND BRAKE LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS NOT LEAKING AND THERE WERE NO BRAKE FLUID LEAKS EITHER, BUT THE CONSUMER WAS EXPERIENCING BRAKING ISSUES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 115,000. UPDATED 9/13/11 *CN UPDATED 09/28/11
WE OWN A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR AND PARTICIPATED IN THE RECENT RECALL FOR THE SPEED CONTROL. ABOUT A MONTH AFTER THE RECALL FIX, OUR BRAKE LIGHTS (INCLUDING ABS) CAME ON. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO OUR MECHANIC, HE SAID THE ABS CONTROL MODULE IS DAMAGED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE WEB, IT APPEARS THIS IS A WELL KNOW ISSUE (ABS ECM FAILURE - ABS BRAKE LIGHT). WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS ISSUE, AND WOULD LIKE THE FORD DEALER TO SUBMIT A RECALL. THANK YOU *TR
DRIVING HOME FROM A FAMILY OUTING ON 03/06/2010, WE HEARD A LOUD SOUND/CLUNK COMING FROM THE REAR OF OUR 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. LUCKILY, WE WERE ONLY DOING 30 MPH ON OUR STREET RIGHT ALMOST TO OUR DRIVEWAY, INSTEAD OF BEING ON THE EXPRESSWAY DOING 60 MPH AS WE WERE ONLY MINUTES BEFORE . THE VAN'S REAR END SWERVED AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES. I MANAGED TO PULL INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AND CALM THE WIFE AND KIDS DOWN (WHO WERE HYSTERICAL). I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I WAS SCARED ALSO. WHEN I MANAGED TO PARK THE VAN, I NOTICED THAT THE REAR TIRES WERE SLANTED INTO THE VAN, RUBBING THE WHEEL WELLS AT THE TOP. I THEN LOOKED UNDER THE REAR OF THE VAN AND SEEN THAT THE REAR AXLE BEAM WAS BROKE, ABOUT 18" FROM THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE. I IMPLORE EVERONE THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO TO CALL THE FORD CUSTOMER CARE NUMBER (1-800-241-3673) AND REPORT IT. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THAT FORD WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THIS PROBLEM AS A POTENTIAL MANUFACTURER DEFECT. OUR 2002 WINDSTAR HAS ONLY 78,338 MILES ON IT. OUR LOCAL DEALER, WHERE WE BOUGHT IT FROM, SAID THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING. I FIND IT VERY HARD TO BELIEVE SINCE I CAN BRING UP ABOUT 100 DIFFERENT COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS VERY SAM THING FOR THE MODEL YEARS 2000-2002.
THE REAR AXLE ON MY 2002 FORD WINDSTAR BROKE WITH NO WARNING. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN CRASHED AND IS MAINTAINED VERY WELL WITH NO VISIBLE RUST. THIS CAUSES LOSS OF CONTROL BUT I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR STOPPED WITHOUT INCIDENT. IN AN INTERNET SEARCH I SEE THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON FAILURE AND WONDER WHY THIS IS NOT BEING INVESTIGATED. IT VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
ABS/E-BRAKEWARNING LED'S COME ON WHEN VAN WARMS UP. ABS QUIT WORKING WHILE DRIVING ON FREEWAY ON WET ROADS. NEARLY CRASHED INTO SIDE RAIL. WHEN I GOT HOME CHECKED MY BRAKE FLUID AND FOUND IT EMPTY. FILLED THE FLUID AND TOOK CAR TO MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY. MECHANIC SAID I HAD LEAKED FLUID ALL OVER, BUT THE MASTER CYL. LOOKED TO BE FINE. FOUND INFO ON LINE AND SOON AFTER GOT A RECALL NOTICE FROM FORD. TOOK VAN TO FORD DEALER WHO INSTALLED THE FUSIBLE LINK, PER THE RECALL NOTICE IN NOVEMBER. MY ABS AND E-BRAKE LIGHTS ARE BACK ON AS OF ABOUT MARCH, 2010. THEY COME ON MOST OFTEN AFTER THE VAN HAS WARMED UP, OR IF THE TEMP OUTSIDE IS WARMER. AT THE SAME TIME THAT THESE WARNING DASH LIGHTS CAME BACK ON I LOST BRAKE LIGHTS ALL TOGETHER, NO TAIL LIGHTS, NO REVERSE LAMPS, NO REAR TURN SIGNALS, NO DOME LIGHTS, CC WORKS SOMETIMES AND OTHERS DOES NOT, AND THE AUTO LOCKS OFTEN DO NOT WORK TO LOCK OR UNLOCK THE VAN. MY BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD OFTEN STAY ON AFTER TURNING THE VAN OFF AND REMOVING THE KEY, AND NOW THEY DON'T TURN ON AT ALL. MY BATTERY WOULD DIE AND HAVE HUGE AMOUNTS OF CORROSION ON THE NEG. LEAD OF THE BATTERY. REPLACED BATTERY AND THE GROUND CHASIS LEAD AND THE GROUND BATTERY TERMINAL. I HAVE YET ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH THE FORD DEALER THIS WEEK. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING NOW FOR 8 MONTHS. IF MY VAN CATCHES FIRE, MY DOOR LOCKS WILL NOT UNLOCK IN THE REAR HOW WILL I GET MY CHILDREN OUT QUICKLY AND SAFELY? THIS IS DANGEROUS! *TR
2002 FORD WINDSTAR - HAD RECALL FROM OCT 2009 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) DONE ON VEHICLE. SOMETIME THE CAR WILL START AND NO ISSUES APPEAR IN THE DRIVER INSTRUMENT GAUGES OTHER TIMES THE ISSUE WILL APPEAR AT STARTUP. IF IT IS FINE AT STARTUP, SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING (SOMETIMES OVER BUMPS, SOMETIMES JUST OVER TIME), THE PROBLEM WILL APPEAR. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE "BRAKE", "ABS", AND "TRAC CONTROL" LIGHTS TURN ON, INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR'S BRAKING SYSTEM. CAR STILL BRAKES FINE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, BUT IT APPEARS THAT THE ABS SYSTEM AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS STOP FUNCTIONING RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF THOSE CRITICAL SAFETY SYSTEMS. SHUTTING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING RESETS THE SYSTEM AND EVERYTHING IS FINE UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. PROBLEM IS GETTING MORE REGULAR, ALMOST OCCURRING EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE CAR. *TR
SERIOUS INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. BREAK AND ABS LIGHT HAVE BEEN ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR IN OCTOBER 2007. THEN IN MARCH 2010, AFTER SMELLING ELECTRICAL BURNING, THE BATTERY LIGHT BEGAN INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATING AND GO OFF WHEN GAS IS APPLIED FOR A FEW MOMENTS. ASSUMING POSSIBLE ALTERNATOR OR BATTERY ISSUE, CHANGED OUT THE TWO COMPONENTS. BREAK AND ABS LIGHT AND BATTERY AGAIN BEGAN ILLUMINATING, AND DOOR LOCKS BEGAN NOT WORKING. FORD DEALER PERFORMED 2009 ABS RECALL CORRECTION, BUT ELECTRICAL ISSUES REMAINED. THEN ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS STOPPED WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN ON A BUSY STREET. LOST POWER STEERING, DOORS ALL LOCKED, BREAKS WENT OUT, ODDLY THE INTERIOR LIGHTS BLINKED ON AND OFF LIKE AN AIRPLANE EMERGENCY LIGHTING WOULD DURING A CRASH LANDING. UNABLE TO UNLOCK BACK DOOR TO REMOVE MY TODDLER FROM THE CAR SEAT, AND HAD TO PRAY NO ONE WOULD SLAM ME FROM BEHIND WHILE I CRAWLED INTO THE BACKSEAT AND UNLATCHED HIM (BECAUSE BACK LIGHTS WERE NOT LIT) THEN EXITED THE CAR. HAD TO BE JUMPED TO RESTART. CHANGED 3 BATTERIES AND 4 ALTERNATORS (2 WERE MOTOR CRAFT) SINCE MARCH 2010. ONE ALTERNATOR BLEW WITHIN MOMENTS AFTER THE CAR WAS STARTED AFTER CHANGING IT. MECHANIC MENTIONED HE NOTICED AN ARC FLASH PRIOR TO ITS BLOWING. REPLACED ALL NEW WIRES GOING INTO AND OUT OF THE ALTERNATOR, ALL NEW BATTERY CABLES. REPLACED SERPENTINE BELT AND SEVERAL FUSES. BATTERY LIGHT STILL COMES ON. TOOK VAN TO FORD DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY WITNESSED AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE ILLUMINATED BATTERY LIGHT, HOOKED VAN UP TO ELECTRICAL TEST EQUIPMENT, AND FOUND NOTHING ($100). HOOKED IT UP TO THE REGULAR DIAGNOSTICS TEST EQUIPMENT (ANOTHER $100) TRIED TO SELL ME AN INTAKE MANIFOLD FOR $500 INCLUDING LABOR (I DIDN'T BITE). THEY REPLACED THE 2 DOOR ACTUATORS ON THE FRONT DOORS ($300) AND THEN TOLD ME THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ACTUAL ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. LIGHTS STILL LIT. CAR RELIABILITY GONE

WENT OVER A SMALL POT HOLE AND REAR AXLE BROKE. NEEDED TO REPLACE REAR AXLE. AXLE ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED FOR CRACK IN 2009. *TR
BRAKING DISTANCE SUDDENLY INCREASED. ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT HAS BEEN COMING ON AFTER A SHORT TIME AND STAYING ON AFTER THE CAR IS DRIVEN FOR A WHILE. VEHICLE LOCKED UP THE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING, DEALER STATES THAT THE ECU NEEDS TO BE REPLACED-RELATED TO THE FORD RECALL 09S09. *TR

THE CRUISE CONTROL AND SPEEDOMETER ALSO MALFUNCTIONED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 109,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 115,000.
I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 FOR WINDSTAR AND THE ROADS WERE SNOWY AND SLIPPERY. WHILE DRIVING THE VAN SEEMED TO SLIDE AND SWAY IN THE BACK. I ASSUMED IT WAS FROM THE SNOWY ROADS AND TOOK THE VAN HOME. 2 DAYS LATER WHEN THE ROADS WERE PRETTY WELL CLEARED I TOOK THE VAN OUT AGAIN. WHILE DRIVING ON CLEAR PAVEMENT THE VAN SEEMED TO SWAY AND SLIDE LIKE I WAS ON ICE IN THE REAR-END. AS I HEADED HOME IT GOT WORSE AND WAS SHAKING AND SWAYING. I SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 20 MILES PER HOUR AND GOT THE VAN HOME. I HAD IT LOOKED AT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE AXLE IS 1 TO 2 INCH FROM A COMPLETE BREAK. IF IT WOULD HAVE BROKE WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED ME TO WRECK. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND HAVE FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS HAPPENING TO 02 WINDSTARS. I CANT AFFORD TO FIX SOMETHING THIS EXPENSIVE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *TR

THE REAR DOOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FOR MORE THAT A WEEK NOW OPENS ON IT'S OWN WHILE I AM DRIVING ALONG THE HIGHWAY. FOR MORE THAN TWO YEARS THE DOOR HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM DUE TO THE FACT THAT EITHER OF THEM WILL CLOSE ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT WHEN THE AUTOMATIC BUTTON TO CLOSE THEM IS USED. 3 TIMES IN 2 WEEKS, CAR HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT 25 MILES PER HOUR. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER IN SEPTEMBER 2010 AND WAS STILL IN THE DEALERS POSSESSION WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED SINCE THE PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE FAILURE, RECALL 10V385000, SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 125,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH THE CONTACT NOTICED A LOUD POPPING SOUND FOLLOWED BY A THUMP IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER EXAMINING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS BENT INSIDE THE FRAME. A LOCAL DEALERSHIP INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REAR AXLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 112000.

IN MY 2002 WINDSTAR THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON WHILE DRIVING AND WILL GO OFF ONLY TO COME BACK ON ANOTHER TIME WHILE DRIVING. IN 2009 WE HAD THE SAFETY RECALL TAKEN CARE OF, BUT IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. NOW I AM NOTICING WHILE I HAVE THE VAN RUNNING, HEAT AND RADIO ON, THE RADIO AND CLOCK LIGHTS WILL GO ON AND OFF. ALSO, THE BACK DOORS DO NOT ALWAYS UNLOCK AND IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL TIMES OF PRESSING THE POWER DOOR LOCKS TO UNLOCK BEFORE THEY WILL UNLOCK. I AM FEARFUL THERE WILL BE AN ISSUE AND I WILL NEED TO GET MY DAUGHTER OUT QUICKLY AND WON'T BE ABLE TO BECAUSE OF THE DOOR LOCK ISSUE. *TR
1. THE CAR STOPS ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING 2. THAT HAPPENS BETWEEN 2 AND 5 TIMES A WEEK 3. WHEN THAT HAPPENS, I PUT THE CAR IN PARK THEN RESTART IT. I TOOK THE CAR TO MULLIMAX FORD DEALER IN APOPKA, FL SEVERAL TIMES. I PAID FOR DIAGNOSTICS, THEY CANNOT FIND THE REASON OR THE PROBLEM. THEY USUALLY PERFORM NECESSARY REPAIRS, BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL NOT SOLVED. RECENTLY I WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN WHEN THE CAR DIED. SEVERAL MOTORIST STEPPED ON THEIR BRAKE TO AVOID STRIKING MY VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM WAS ON INITIAL STAGE, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED FOR ANOTHER RECALL ON 11-25-09. *TR
ABS AND BRAKE LAMP STILL ON AFTER RECALL FOR 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. *TR
I HEARD A RATTLE WHICH SOUNDED LIKE A LOOSE TAILPIPE. I BROUGHT IT TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE REAR AXLE BEAM HAD SNAPPED. HE SAID THAT IT WAS NOT DAMAGED AND IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS JUST A BAD PIECE OF STEEL. HE HAD NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. THE PARTS DID NOT HAVE TO BE ORDERED BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE READILY AVAILABLE AND IN STOCK AT HIS PARTS DEALER. AFTER LOOKING ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I WAS LUCKY THAT THE AXLE BEAM DID NOT BREAK WHILE I WAS TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE THE HANDLING OF THE VEHICLE WAS SEVERELY COMPROMISED. THE REAR AXLE BEAM WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. I DID NOT KEEP THE OLD AXLE BEAM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. DURING A RECALL REPAIR THE DEALER DID NOT PERFORM THE ENTIRE REPAIR. THE DEALER INSTALLED A FUELABLE LINK AND INSPECTED THE HARNESS FOR HEAT DAMAGE. THE DEALER DID NOT FIND ANY HEAT DAMAGE TO THE HARNESS SO THE DEALER DID NOT REPLACE THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT A LEAK CAUSED THE SCDS TO LEAK AND THE HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO INFORMED THE MANUFACTURER THAT IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED; THEREFORE, THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT NO MORE REPAIRS ARE NEEDED ON THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FEELS THE VEHICLE CAN CAUSE A FIRE DUE TO THE ABS CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR NOT BEING REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
2002 FORD WINDSTAR REAR AXLE BEAM BROKE IN HALF WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN. THE VAN STARTED SWAYING IN THE REAR EARLIER IN THE DAY AND WE THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE OF ICE AND SNOW ON THE ROADS THAT DAY. ON GOOD PAVEMENT WE DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY ISSUES. WE STOPPED AND LOOKED AT THE TIRES AND THEY ALL LOOKED FINE , AND FOUND NO EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST ANYTHING ELSE WAS WRONG WITH VAN. NO OTHER WARNING BEFORE FAILURE. WHEN THIS HAPPENED BOTH REAR WHEELS TOWED INWARD CAUSING VAN TO SLIDE OUT OF CONTROL FOR SHORT DISTANCE, AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. HAD WE BEEN TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS OF 65 MILES AN HOUR I WOULD NOT LIKE TO THINK WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED.WE HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A FORD DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THIS COULD OF BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT, CAUSING BODILY HARM OR DEATH. I HAD THE DEALER SAVE THE PARTS FOR ME AND I ALSO TOOK PICTURES OF THE FAILED PART AFTER IT WAS REMOVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HER INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE BRAKE SHOES AND AXLE WERE REPLACED AT HER EXPENSE. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THE ENTIRE BACK END OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED DUE TO THE CRACKED AXLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 126,000.

WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY , MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN WERE IN A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR MINIVAN. SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER, IT WAS LIKE IT WENT INTO NEUTRAL AND STAYED THERE. THE WIRING TO THE MASTER CYLINDER SPEED CONTROL PRESSURE SWITCH MELTED AND CAUSED A SMALL FIRE WHICH FORTUNATELY WAS PUT OUT. AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. APPARENTLY BRAKE FLUID LEAKED FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER ONTO THE SWITCH. 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD WINDSTAR. THE BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH ONTO THE WIRING HARNESS AND IT'S COMPONENTS WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE #10 FUSE TO FAIL. THE LEAK WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECT WHICH LED TO RECALL 09V399000. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS MALFUNCTIONING AS A RESULT. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF THE COMPONENT LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST HIM UNTIL HIS VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 85,000.
