WHILE DRIVING IN KY MY TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY FAILED, LEAVING ME STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THERE WAS NO WARNING, NO LIGHTS, NO NOISES. THE CAR SIMPLY STOPPED ACCELERATING. THERE WERE NO FORWARD GEARS NOR REVERSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INTERIOR LIGHT SWITCH WOULD SPORADICALLY SWITCH ON AND OFF. THE COMPUTER SYSTEM LIGHT WOULD ALSO SPORADICALLY ILLUMINATE AND GIVE A FALSE READING WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE DEALER WAS CALLED AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RETURN CALL FROM THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT STAY ILLUMINATED AS SOON AS THE VAN IS TURNED ON. THE DOME LIGHTS FLICKER ON AND OFF. I'VE TAKEN THE VAN TO THE DEALER FOR THE DOME LIGHTS AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VAN, BUT TOLD ME THAT IT IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT AND IT IS LIKELY THE START OF A TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE ON THE VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT WHEN SUDDENLY, SMOKE BEGAN EMITTING FROM THE HOOD. THE CONTACT OPENED THE HOOD AND SAW THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND THE POLICE TOOK A REPORT SHORTLY AFTER. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHI.P, WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (RECALL 09V399000). THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT TO CALL THE INSURANCE COMPANY SO THE REPAIR COSTS WOULD BE COVERED BUT THE INSURANCE COMPANY REFUSED AS THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY VEHICLE MALFUNCTION AND NOT AN ACCIDENT. THE DEALER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER WHO REQUESTED PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THEY WOULD ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 80,450.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000. UPDATED 05/01/13 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION HAS SINCE FAILED AGAIN.
THE ABS WARNING LIGHT IS ON, INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN ON, THE REAR BRAKES CAN EASILY LOCK UP IF I SLAM ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. BRAKING DISTANCE IS INCREASED, AND WITH LESS CONTROL. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM: HTTP://WWW.FORDWINDSTARRECALL.INFO/#BROKENSOLDIER DESCRIBED AS PROBLEM # 2 ON THIS SITE. I ALSO HAD PROBLEM NUMBER 1 DESCRIBED ON THE ABOVE WEBSITE WHERE THE "BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL DEACTIVATION SWITCH" DEVELOPED A LEAK. FOR SOME, AS THE WEBSITE SUGGESTS, THIS HAS CAUSED A FIRE. I FIXED MINE, MYSELF, AT MY OWN EXPENSE, BEFORE A FIRE OCCURRED. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES ARE DESIGN / MANUFACTURE DEFECTS, NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE BRAKES WOULD ALSO SPORADICALLY LOCK WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE. IN ADDITION, THE DOOR AJAR WARNING LIGHT WOULD ALSO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ALTHOUGH ALL DOORS WERE LATCHED CLOSED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,000.

DRIVING ON SMOOTH ROAD WHEN REAR AXEL SNAPPED AND BROKE IN 2 ON 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. HAD CAR TOWED AND IS IN TO REPLACE AXEL. CHECKED ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM AND THERE WERE 44 INSTANCES OF THE REAR AXEL ON FORD WINDSTARS BREAKING IN THE SAME PLACE. *TR
WHERE TO START? ALMOST SEEM LIKE TO MANY PROBLEMS TO LIST. WE WILL START WITH THE CONSTANT DRAINING AND REPLACEMENT OF THE BATTERY. NEW BATTERY EVERY FEW MONTHS. THINKING THIS ISSUE MAY HAVE TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THE INTERIOR LIGHTS GO ON AND OFF AT RANDOM UNEXPLAINED TIMES. SOMETIMES REMAINING ON ONCE THE VEHICLE IS OFF AND ALL DOORS ARE COMPLETELY CLOSED. PROBLEM WITH ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COMING ON AT RANDOMS TIMES IN ADDITION TP THE CHECL CHARGING SYSTEM LIGHT. SOMETIMES THEY COME ON AND OFF BUT IF THEY REMAIN ON CAUSE THE CAR TO HESITATE OR JUST QUIT ON YOU. I HAVE 3 KIDS AND AM TERRIFIED FOR OUR SAFETY EVERYTIME WE ARE IN THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE FINALLY HAD ENOUGH AND AM FILING A COMPLAINT SINCE I HAVE READ FROM NUMEROUS SOURCES THAT I AM ONE OF THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE. TRANSMISSION FAILURE WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING. ONE SECOND I'M PULLING ON TO THE ROADWAY WITH A WORKING TRANSMISSION THE NEXT SECOND MY VEHICLE IS SITTING IN THE WAY OF TRAFFIC AND CAN NOT MOVE. SHE WAS ALSO EXPERIENCING THE FAILURE WITH THE SPEEDOMETER WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH; HOWEVER, THE ODOMETER READ 20 MPH. THE VEHICLE WASN'T TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WASN'T REPAIRED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE DRIVER WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MPH, THE FRONT AIR BAG SUDDENLY DEPLOYED DAMAGING THE DRIVER SEAT. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED A MINOR INJURY IN MARCH 2009, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE DEALER CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS WHICH WOULD INCLUDE NEW WIRING AND A DRIVER SEAT REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 98,000.
TRANSMISSION ON THE FORD WINDSTAR 2003 GOES WITHOUT WARNING. IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING DOWN A MAJOR HIGHWAY IT DECREASED IN SPEED TO A STOP. THE ENGINE REV. WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED HE PUT HIS FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE DRIVER HAD TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. TRANSMISSION FAILURE 2003 FORD WINDSTAR. NO INDICATION OF TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS LEADING UP TO THE EVENT. SMOOTH SHIFTING, NO SHUDDERS, NO HESITATION ON ACCELERATION. STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT-BUSY INTERSECTION. ON ACCELERATION, WINDSTAR MOVED FORWARD INTO INTERSECTION, RPMS INCREASED RAPIDLY WITHOUT ANYMORE FORWARD MOVEMENT. FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSTICS REPORTED TRANSMISSION FAILURE BUT COULD NOT BE MORE SPECIFIC THAN TORQUE CONVERTER, INPUT SHAFT OR HYDRAULIC FLUID PUMP. SOME FORD WINDSTARS SHARE A TRANSMISSION TYPE (AX4N/4F50N) WITH THE FORD FREESTAR WHICH IS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR A SIMILAR COMPLAINT WITH ODI (NHTSA ACTION NUMBER : PE09033). VEHICLE HAD 95,000 MILES WITH REGULAR SERVICE ACTIONS. FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE IS MORE WIDESPREAD THAN THE 3 REPORTED INCIDENTS WITH NHTSA. SHE WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY WITHOUT INCIDENT. SHE WAITED UNTIL THE POLICE ARRIVED TO ASSIST. SHE NOTICED THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL WAS COLLAPSING INWARD TOWARD THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY FOUND THE REAR AXLE HAD FAILED. THE REAR AXLE AND THE ENTIRE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON HER VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 80,000. THE VIN WAS NOT ACCEPTED.

MULTI-FUNCTION MODULE FAILURE AND FORD SUPPLIES NO REPLACEMENT PARTS ARE AVAILABLE THIS MODULE ALSO CAUSES THE INTERIOR LIGHTS TO FLASH ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AND CAN CAUSE STALLING OF THE VAN DUE TO MODULE MALFUNCTION AND REGULATION OF THE CHARGING SYSTEM. *TR

ON MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR THE ABS LIGHT AND E-BRAKE LIGHT ON THE CONSOLE WOULD COME ON SPORADICALLY, STAY ON FOR A WHILE, AND THEN TURN OFF. THIS OCCURRED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS STARTING LAST WINTER. ABOUT A MONTH AGO THEY WENT ON AND HAVE NOT GONE OFF. THE SPORADIC COMING ON OF THE LIGHTS SEEMED TO COINCIDE WITH THE POWER FAILURE FOR THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOWS. BOTH WINDOWS ARE NOW INOPERABLE AT ALL TIMES. I CONTACTED FORD IN REGARDS TO THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SPEED CONTROL RELATED RECALL, GAVE THEM MY VIN, AND WAS TOLD MY VEHICLE FALLS OUTSIDE THE CUTOFF DATA FOR THIS RECALL. *TR
BRAKE AND ABS DASH LIGHTS ARE ON INTERMITTENTLY. *TR
THE DASHBOARD ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATE. THIS HAPPENS OFF AND ON OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. SOMETIMES YOU WILL DRIVE FOR 5 TO 10 MINUTES AND THEN THE LIGHTS COME ON AND SOMETIMES THEY COME ON IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU START THE CAR. WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ON, THE ABS SYSTEMS DOES NOT WORK. THE PROBLEM HAS PERSISTED SO LONG THAT MY DASHBOARD BRAKE LIGHT MUST BE BURNED OUT BECAUSE IT LONGER ILLUMINATES, EVEN WHEN YOU TURN THE IGNITION KEY FORWARD AND ALL DASH LIGHTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ILLUMINATE. DEALERSHIP REPAIRS WERE OVER 500. I BELIEVE THIS IS UNETHICAL WHEN THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND JUDGING FROM COMPLAINTS ONLINE, THERE APPEAR TO BE MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
MY SPEEDOMETER WILL NOT WORK AT ALL, GO UP AND DOWN OR GET STUCK, INDICATING THE WRONG SPEED, WHILE IN MOTION, ALSO AT A STOP, IT WILL POP UP, HAPPENS ON CITY STREET AND ON HIGHWAY. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT ISSUE WITH FORD WINDSTAR MINIVANS. TO ME THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE AS I FIND IT DISTRACTING, HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST I'M GOING. I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A SCHOOL ZONE TODAY AND WHILE I WAS NOT DRIVING FAST, I COULD NOT SAY FOR CERTAIN THAT I WAS WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT. I'M CONTINUOUSLY LOOKING AT MY SPEEDOMETER, TAKING MY FOOT OFF THE GAS TO SEE IF IT WILL DROP, BUT I CAN'T TRUST THAT THE SPEED READING BEFORE WAS CORRECT. I CAN BE DRIVING AND IT WILL POP RIGHT UP TO INDICATED 100MPH, WHEN I'M DRIVING IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. I GET ALERTS AND SIGNAL ALARMS FOR "LOW BRAKE FLUID", "CHECK ADVANCETRACK", MY AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT IS ON INTERMITTENTLY, AND MY REAR BACK UP SENSORS DON'T WORK EITHER. I HAVE ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE DRIVERS SIDE SLIDING DOOR NOT STAYING SHUT WHEN PARKED, I HAVE HAD THIS FEATURE DISABLED FOR SAFETY REASONS. IT WILL START TO CLOSE, REOPEN, START AGAIN, CLOSE PARTIALLY AND THEN REOPEN AGAIN, EVEN IF THE DOOR IS LOCKED IT WILL DO THIS. THESE ARE ALL ONGOING PROBLEMS, I DON'T KNOW IF THEY ARE TIED TOGETHER. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE LOOKED AT FOR PROBLEMS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT CODES COME UP UNDER DIAGNOSTICS BUT WHEN THE ACTUAL PARTS THEY ARE WARNING ABOUT LIKE THE ABS, LOW BRAKE FLUID ARE FINE. I HAVE HAD THE CAR AT A FORD DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE DOOR ISSUE AND WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT FIGURE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE ISSUE.
ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT COME ON SHORTLY AFTER STARTING THE VAN AND DRIVING IT. BEEN LIKE THIS FOR YEARS. LOOKS LIKE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED AND ADDRESSED.

WHILE DRIVING THE ABS, BRAKE AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS COME ON THE DASHBOARD. I'M NOT SURE WHAT IT DOES, BUT THE VEHICLE DOES THEN NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. AFTER HAVING MY 2003 FORD WINDSTAR SERVICED ACCORDING TO FORD RECALL 09S09 I CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE MY DASHBOARD LIGHT FOR BOTH ABS AND BRAKES ALMOST CONTINUALLY ON WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE FORD DEALER THAT THE ADDITION OF THE FUSES TO PREVENT FIRES WAS THE ONLY THING CALLED FOR IN THE RECALL. BUT OBVIOUSLY THIS ALONE DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND I AM DRIVING AROUND WITH NO ABS. *TR

INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF ABS MODULE CAUSING RED BRAKE LIGHT AND ORANGE ABS LIGHT TO COME ON AND LOSS OF ABS FUNCTION. THIS SEAMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN HOT WEATHER. SOMETIMES THE ABS CAN BE "TURNED BACK ON" BY SHUTTING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING. ALSO REAR POWER SLIDING DOORS HAVE INTERMITTENT PROBLEM TO WHERE THEY WILL NOT FULLY UNLOCK. DOOR WILL PARTIALLY OPEN, THEN GET STUCK, SO THAT YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY PUSH THE REAR OF THE DOOR SHUT IN ORDER TO ATTEMPT TO GET THE DOOR TO PROPERLY OPEN. WORRIED THAT DOORS WILL NOT OPEN IN CASE OF ACCIDENT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO A SECOND REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR AXLE WAS RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V385000 (SUSPENSION:REAR:AXLE:NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY). THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 125,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
