NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 GMC Yukon. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My transmission began having problems the day it was delivered to me. After the oil change which they delivered to me at low percentage was completed the motor was ticking. It has had a burning smell and has been in and out of the shop and going back soon. I was on the expressway and the speed declined with error messages on the dash almost resulting in an accident. No one is listening to my concerns and now the motor has a metal clinking noise
Engine stopped working while driving. agency replaced my engine with a new one, which I am not sure if it will do the same issue since this is becoming a known issue with the 6.2 engine
When vehicle is turned on OR during normal driving, audio volume randomly goes to full high mode (all the way up) to a deafening level that makes it difficult to drive. The knob, steering wheel controls and any connected devices (like the phone) do not control the audio. Audio setting is completely unresponsive and will not turn down. It is not possible to drive in this condition. I had to pull over and turn my car off. I turned it on and off several times before the audio did not come on full blast and I could safely drive my car. This is the third time this has happened to me. Two out of 3 times I had a young child in the car.
[XXX] while driving on [XXX] myself and my family in our 2022 yukon 6 lane highway 65 mph the engine lost power with no warning at all and left us with no power steering ,or brakes. This was in heavy traffic with other vehicles on our right and left side. I was able to put 4 way on and carefully move to the right lane and then barely to the burm. Vehicle would not restart and the sound of it was of rattle and groan. yukon was towed to the nearest dealer and we were told it was a bad engine of either bearings or rods. We were very lucky to not having an accident and harm my family or other persons on the highway. When a new engine was installed it ran for ony 15 minutes and also was defective for the same issue. Vehicle was returned to us on 12/14/24 and we were denied any additional warranty. At this point i have no confidence in the vehicle or General Motors. We took a financial loss when we traded the vehicle because of the major problems thru no fault of ours. The dealer would offer nothing as far as extending the warranty nor would GMC customer service that we filed a formal complaint # [XXX]. I have a 2022 Yukon Denali. On [XXX] the engine failed with approximately 33,000 miles on it. When the engine failed, we were traveling on a highway in New York State at a high rate of speed. Everything shut down but the steering and brakes. This put us in a dangerous situation in which we had to exit the freeway and call for a tow truck. It was still under warranty. They replaced the engine and completed the project on November 5, 2024. They delivered the car from the dealership that repaired it in New Jersey to my home in California on December 9, 2024. The new engine they installed failed on December 10, 2024. I brought it to Winter Chevrolet in Pittsburgh California. As of January 18, 2025 they have still not been able to locate a new engine to install. As of today, it has been 117 days since I’ve been without the use of my car. In my dealings with General motors, it appears that their goal is just to stall until they find an engine to install in my car also we have had no clear explanation or diagnosis of what actually is wrong with the car. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Every time I start the vehicle and open the door and close the door, the driver side mirror, rearview mirror, either moves all the way out or moves all the way in which is a safety concerns. I can’t see the traffic on my left side and behind me.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Completely Out of Oil" was displayed on the instrument panel. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.
The servicing dealer identified a faulty injector wiring harness. A national backorder caused a delay in repair. I do not have the part. The dealer retained. I was driving at highway speeds on the interstate and every possible warning light came on the dash. "Service ESC" "Service Traction Control", Reduced Acceleration Drive with Care", "Forward Collision System Unavailable", "Service Emmision System" At this point, I experienced a loss of power and acceleration, and the vehicle would shake violently when I applied the accelerator pedal. There was no indication of any failure prior to the failure.
Windshield wipers quit working. I turned off the rain sensing feature and they did not work even then. This is the second complaint I am filing on this vehicle. The vehicle is at the dealership for the second time to address this issue. Very very unsafe! they will work fine and then all of the sudden while it is raining they will stop working. Night time is the worst.
Windshield wipers quit working. Either with or without rain sensing on or off.
At 27, 000 miles while on vacation, over 1000 miles from home, the lifters and bearings grenaded the motor. The vehicle sat at the dealership for a month waiting for a motor replacement. This could have been much worse as we had just driven through mountains the day before. Had this happened in the mountains this could have been deadly. The engine was replaced, but we have no faith in the new engine as these are failing also. This is unacceptable for any vehicle, let alone an $85,000 Yukon. We have also had several issues with water leaking in from the sunroof also. Gm's solution to me basically missing 3 and a half days of a 7 day vacation was to give me enough gm points to get a free oil change. The dealership was great to deal with, the people I dealt with at GM were not very helpful at all.
See attached document for complaint.
At 33k miles the engine failed due to lifter failure and rod bearing failure.
The dealer claims it was a faulty battery. Said it had a short in it. I have the battery and it can be inspected. I firmly believe it was software related. I was driving and the vehicle completely shut off while driving. I was unable to steer, restart, use the power assisted brakes, or navigate to a safe area. I was unable to restart the vehicle and it had to be towed. The problem was never reproduced and has not occurred again. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer. All possible warning lights came on the dash and display. The radio and Bluetooth still worked.
Vehicle lifters failed early February 2024 while driving. Lifters were replaced and returned to us. One week later the entire engine seized while at 75 mph freeway. Vehicle currently in for repairs for 30+ days and still not fixed. Have had the Yukon in the shop 8 times for electrical, engine, computer failures all previously identified in complaints listed on this website. Family was put at risk on a known chronic engine failure as told by the service department and technician.
On January 21, 2024, my family and I went to lunch. As we proceeded to leave to return home when I pressed the brake the braking system, traction system, and forward collision systems all failed simultaneously, causing me to be unable to stop the vehicle which caused it to go through a stop sign while the brakes were fully depressed. Luckily, we were still in a parking lot, traveling only 5 MPH. There was no oncoming traffic as we rolled through the stop sign. The following Error Messages Displayed on the Dash Info Screen Brake System Failure 43 MPH Top Speed, Forward Collision System Unavailable, Service Traction Control, Service Brake Pad Monitor There was no warning from the display prior to trying to stop the vehicle that indicated there were any issues with the brakes. It wasn’t until I depressed the brake that I realized that the braking system was in total failure. After safely allowing the truck to roll to a stop, I turned the engine off, and then back on to see if that would reengage the brakes, but it did not resolve the issue. At that point I called an Uber to take my family home and a tow truck to transport my vehicle to my local dealer, Barker Motor Company. My fear is that this could have happened while we were on the highway traveling faster than 5MPH in traffic, which could have been potentially fatal. After having my vehicle for a week to identify and repair the brake issue, was unable to identify the specific cause of the brake failure to repair and could not insure me that the brakes would not fail again. Instead, the technician replaced the battery in response to a low voltage code that showed in the DTC report. However, he could not provide an answer as to how that could have been connected to the total brake failure.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, there was a clicking sound coming from the vehicle and the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was jumpstarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for routine maintenance; however, the contact asked for the vehicle to be diagnosed. The dealer stated that the failure was not yet determined. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with starter failure. The dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was no longer under Warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000. The VIN was not available.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure by the dealer, and the contact was informed that a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 10,444.
this yukon is leaking water into the cabin and mold has developed. i do not know when this issue started but i noticed the mold under the passenger rubber mat on 8/26/23. i contacted the local dealer, koon's gmc and they told me that they would charge me to just look at the car even though it is under a bumper to bumper 3 year warranty. the dealer was unable to locate the source of the leak, so nothing was fixed. i have been in touch with a gmc representative and she hasn't any useful information. the development of mold in the car is hazardous to our family and this should be looked into by the government.
Experienced a sudden loss of steering ability while driving, no collision occurred. Once the vehicle came to a stop still was unable to steer the vehicle.
This complaint is an addendum to a complaint I filed last week regarding the suspension of my same vehicle. 1. Battery: battery died several times without warning and the cause was never found. Took 4 trips to the dealer to get a new battery placed. Dealer blamed various “modules” each time. I believe that electrical system is faulty because the windshield wiper sprayer also stopped working, and the heads up display flickered at times. Issue 2: “low engine oil pressure warning. Turn vehicle off immediately” warning at 17,800 miles while driving on the highway. Had to immediately pull over and per GMC, the vehicle was not able to be driven and had to be towed to the dealership, leaving me stranded at night in a vehicle that I couldn’t turn on while I waited to be picked up.
My 2022 GMC YUKON DENALI has been at dealership multiple time for defective air ride suspension. The message says "service leveling system" once that show's it's a matter of time the vehicle will slump down. The passenger side air bag keeps busting creating a safety hazard for my family and others on the highway. When problem occurs the vehicle slumps down on front suspension and will bounce out of control when driving on highways and over bridges. It has now been in shop 4 times for the same problem. Dealership has been extremely helpful on trying to fix the problem, but there's definitely something serious going on and GM needs to look into making this right before someone get's hurt driving this vehicle.
Transmission shifting gears sporadically between 49-57 mph and 19-24mph. If I’m driving at 53 mph, I take my foot off the gas and slow down to 50 mph, when I start to slowly accelerate again, it jerks and makes a loud noise as if the transmission has trouble shifting. Took it to the dealer 3 times now. First time they said they can’t find anything wrong. Second time they replaced a valve body that supposedly would fix it. It didn’t. Third time they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I don’t feel safe driving around my 3 kids all the time.
We repeatedly received an error saying “Vehicle too high, drive with caution”, at which point, the suspension adjustment controls would not work and I could not lower the vehicle. The service department has had our vehicle for over 2 months now and I am unsure if they were able to duplicate this particular issue, but we did photograph the warning. We have had multiple other electronic issues with this vehicle and feel we were sold an unsafe vehicle.
Complete shutdown of electronic controls: Driving (pulled out of parking lot) Both remotes in vehicle SiriusXM on w/music Turned audio volume down from steering wheel Music volume immediately jumped to highest level Volume would not respond to steering wheel, radio knob or screen controls Could not turn off or change volume via radio knob (pulled over) Engine shut-off but immediately restarted, multiplt attempts on Park-foot on brake, with audio at full volume and no response to any controls (wheel, infotainment, radio knob) Tried to use remote: lock/unlock/stop, but no response. Changed source from SiriusXM to Android Auto via steering wheel controls and was able to reduce volume and all controls returned to normal function.
While stopped at a stop sign the vehicles start/stop activated and turned off the engine. When I released the break to hit the gas the engine would not turn back on. I was stuck in the middle of the road and unable to restart my vehicle. After several minutes of trying to turn the vehicle off/on it started back up. The second incident happened when using the remote start. Once I entered the vehicle and put my foot on the brake and hit the start button the engine completely died. Radio and heat stayed on but the engine wouldn't turn over. After letting it be for a half hour everything was still on inside the vehicle but the engine still wouldn't turn over. I disconnected the battery and reconnect it. Once that was done the vehicle started back up. Vehicle was brought to the dealership, but was told there is no fix and to not use the automatic start or auto start/stop on the vehicle
Illuminated Emblem failed due to apparent water intrusion. It caused drivers side head lamp to operate improperly. At first it caused headlamp to flicker, as if a short. Then it caused headlamp to remain on when it shouldn't. It would NOT cut off. Therefore, risk of battery going dead and being stranded. It could also cause trouble driving, therefore causing a wreck. My vehicle is currently in the shop for this and no recall has been issued by GM. It's a known issue, had been a known issue for over 7 months, and still NO resolution!! I had to pay extra for this Emblem, and they're NOT offering a refund for an added OEM accessory that will NOT operate! They have issued a temporary "fix" until resolution is found, again, 7 months and still no resolution!

My vehicle was 8 months old and it completely stopped with no warning going down the interstate, I was in the left lane and the vehicle locked up, engine and all leaving me stranded in the left lane on a busy interstate. When the engine quits, there is absolutely no way to get the vehicle into neutral to get it to a safe location. When this happened I was almost hit by an 18 wheeler . After having the vehicle towed to the dealership, they informed me the engine was seized. It took 3 months to get an engine from GM, they finally got the engine in, started it up in the shop, it apparently ran for about 15 minutes before losing oil pressure. At that time they shut the vehicle off, pulled the oil filter, found metal shavings in it and GM told the dealer to order another engine. But there were no engines available. The dealership finally notified me 3.5 months later that they finally received an engine and were working on installing it. I finally got my vehicle back after more than 6 months at the dealership and it was on its 3rd engine. I drove the vehicle for almost 2 years before the Same thing happened, the vehicle locked up on the highway and I had to have it towed. It has taken the dealer over a month to diagnose the problem and called to inform me the engine had seized up again. This will be the fourth engine in a 2022 GMC Yukon AT4. Besides the issue of the engines going bad, it is a severe safety issue that the vehicle will completely lock up on the highway with no way to move it. Twice I have almost been in a serious accident because of this.
On September 9th at approximately 5:00 pm, my wife and I left Augusta and headed to Atlanta to attend an event. While driving highway speeds of about 70-80mph, the vehicle began to decelerate rapidly and then shifted itself into neutral gear. Unable to shift back into drive, I was forced to maneuver my slowing vehicle onto the shoulder of the highway, placing myself and my wife in danger of colliding with the other vehicles who were still travelling at highway speeds. After pulling over onto the shoulder, I was able to shift the vehicle into park and turn it completely off. After a few minutes, I turned the vehicle back on and integrated back into traffic. Approximately 20 minutes later, the vehicle began to have trouble accelerating and I was unable to exceed 65mph on a highway where the speed limit was 70mph, and the other vehicles were exceeding that. My wife and I were sitting ducks in Atlanta traffic. I once again planned to pull the vehicle over when it suddenly made a loud noise and began to vibrate violently. From the far left lane, I found myself fighting with a vehicle that refused to accelerate and was now becoming uncontrollable. I managed to take the next exit, and parked the vehicle. After turning off the vehicle, I waited a few moments and tried to start it again. The vehicle did start, but continued to vibrate aggressively, as well as make loud clunking and squeaking sounds from under the hood. There was also a smell of something burning. For our safety, my wife and I exited the vehicle, as it had been rendered completely inoperable. I was forced to have the vehicle towed. The vehicle is currently at John Miles Chevrolet Buick GMC in Conyers, GA. (678)374-4695. The dealer has not confirmed the problem. No inspection has been done to date. When to vehicle shifted to neutral I believe the only warning light said "Conditions not correct for shifting". It only appeared when the vehicle shifted into neutral.
The lifters failed about two months from buying it from the dealership. The vehicle was new and only had 13 miles when it was bought. The vehicle had about 600 miles when the lifters failed. As he vehicle was being driving on the highway it started making a clicking noise and the engine would pull and lost power. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and was in service for about 3 weeks for repairs. No one other than the dealership has inspected the vehicle. There was no warning lamps, messages or symptoms prior to the failure.
July 5, 2022. Engine Lifter Failure. While driving my new 2022 Yukon Denali (with only 14,400 miles on it), I made a right hand turn into a parking lot. The engine just shut off. No warning lights ever came on. The only thing I had noticed was some unknown noise when I started up the truck and getting underway. The sound promptly went away. I attempted to restart the engine but it would not even turn over. My vehicle was blocking the driveway to the parking lot, creating a traffic hazard on a major street. I had the vehicle towed to a GM dealer who determined the next day that engine had failed due to a known lifter problem. The head mechanic was able to get the truck restarted and the same issue replicated itself. The mechanic received approval to replace the entire engine assembly, but it is on back order. There is no ETA to when the parts will be available. I am fortunate that the vehicle did not shut down in a lane of traffic, on the freeway, or out in the desert or mountains. From my research, this issue with the engine lifters in the 6.2 liter engine has been known by GM for well over 10 years. The engine needs to be recalled and the lifter issue corrected.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on another occasion while driving 65 MPH, a wheel detached from the vehicle and the vehicle slid across the road. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that the tie rod had detached. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that recently while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal, and the engine seized. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined that the engine had seized. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost and remained with the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that after starting the engine, the instrument panel display would not turn on. During the failure, safety features such as the speedometer and fuel gauge were not available to the driver. The contact indicated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who performed a software update but the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 200
Vehicle has been in for repair on (4) separate occasions for the same issue. Without warning, several error messages will pop up indicating problems with power steering, suspension, air bags, etc. In all there are 7 or 8 different error messages that all appear at once, but as soon as they do appear the power steering stops working. This has happened both from a cold start and while driving. In total the vehicle has lost power steering on 12-15 separate occasions. The service department at the dealership has had a hard time diagnosing the problem, but recently said that a faulty serial gateway module was to blame. After waiting 1.5 months for a replacement part, I was told that the repair had been made and the vehicle was ready for pick up. Within 5 minutes of leaving the dealership the power steering failed again while driving, forcing me off to the side of a busy road. The same 7-8 error messages appeared on the screen.
The heads up display starting with the 2022 model removed the colored lane departure warning from the sides of the road graphic that is in line with the road and moved it to a very small display to the left side of the driver's field of view. Now to see the lane departure warning requires a shift of the driver's view to the left and a head tilt if wearing progression bifocals. On prior year models the colored warning provided an early alert well before the seat vibrates as the warning. Taking my vision off the road caused me to come up on a very slow moving car that required the automatic braking to slow my vehicle
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact was informed by the dealer that the Forward Collision Avoidance chip was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for parts to be available. The contact had not experienced a failure. The contact had not experienced a failure.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that since owning the vehicle, the parking sensors failed to operate as needed. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer and was informed that the chip needed to activate the sensor was not installed in the vehicle. The contact called several dealers in his area and was informed that due to a chip shortage, the chip needed to repair the vehicle was not yet available. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100.
Purchased the vehicle brand new on 12/3/21. On 12/21/21 vehicle started to display 'Service Safety Restraint System' and Airbag light was on. Also, all controls on the overhead console (sunroof, sunroof shade, MAP lights, rear access control, auto folding seat control) were no longer working. The passenger airbag light on the overhead console that notifies if the airbag is on or off was also no longer lighting up. The interior overhead lights in all 3 rows of the vehicle are not working and the fold down mirror lights are not working. I contacted my local dealership and they said the overhead console had failed and was the cause of the issues. They stated they had ordered the part and that I could come pickup my vehicle. They did state the part was backordered and it could be weeks before the part arrived. I asked if the vehicle was safe to drive as the airbag light was on, the passenger airbag light was no longer lit up, and the 'Service Safety Restraint System' error continued to display. They stated they could not guarantee that the airbag system was functioning properly, but I could still come get the vehicle. I asked if they had a loaner vehicle they could provide me with as I was concerned about the airbag system not functioning properly and they stated they did not have any loaner vehicles. I have contacted the dealership several times to see if there are any updates on the part and they have told me the part is still backordered and have no ETA of when the part may be in. So, I have been driving around in a vehicle for almost two months that has non-functioning airbags. This is a significant safety hazard.
