RIGHT FRONT BALL JOINT COLLAPSED -SEPARATED FROM SUSPENSION, LUCKILY WHILE ENTERING A DRIVEWAY, AT SLOW SPEED - CAR BECAME IMMOBILE. THIS RECALL EXISTS AS CAMPAIGN #99V069000 FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL, BUT ACCORDING TO HONDA, NOT FOR THIS CAR'S VIN NUMBER. LEADS ME TO THINK THAT THIS IS MORE PREVALENT THAN AT FIRST THOUGHT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND WITH NO WARNING VEHICLE WILL SHUT OFF, CAUSING CONSUMER TO PULL OVER.IT WILL BE HARD TO GET VEHICLE TO START AGAIN.DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
CONSUMER HAS A HARD TIME STARTING THE VEHICLE. DEALER NOTIFIED. *MR
CONSUMER STATES THAT WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THERE IS A HEAVY VIBRATION IN THE VEHICLE CAUSING IT TO BE HARD FOR THE CONSUMER TO DRIVE. DEALER NOTIFIED. *MR
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT HAS ILLUMINATED. CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. *AK THE FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE WORN, IN WHICH THE DEALER REPLACED, THE ENGINE WOULD STALL WHILE DRIVING, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS REPLACED, THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS REPLACED WHICH WAS THE CAUSE OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON AND THE STALLING.*JB

DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE FOR REMOVING A MANUFACTURED ALARM SYSTEM, AND TO REPLACE RECALL 02V120000 IGNITION SWITCH . *AK
TRANSMISSION IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT INTO GEAR WHILE CONSUMER IS DRIVING. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING.*AK
CLUTCH FAILED TO ENGAGE WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH. VEHICLE AT THE DEALER. FEEL FREE TO PROVIDE ANY FUTHER INFORMATION.*AK
WHEN STARTING COLD VEHICLE AND ATTEMPTINGTO DEPRESS GAS PEDAL, HAS TO USE EXCESSIVE EFFORT. WHEN CONSUMER IS ABLE TO DEPRESS PEDAL, TIRES SPIN,AND VEHICLE JERKS FORWARD, THROTTLE STICKS.*AK
THIS COMPLAINT IS SIMILAR TO INVESTIGATION NUMBER PE 03-014. MY WIFE'S 1998 HONDA ACCORD (4 CYLINDER WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) ROLLED AWAY FROM THE SPOT WHERE SHE HAD PARKED IT. APPARENTLY SHE HAD LEFT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE, BUT WAS ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. WHEN SHE RETURNED FROM HER ERRAND, THE CAR WAS NO LONGER IN THE PARKING SPOT WHERE SHE HAD LEFT IT. THE CAR HAD ROLLED ABOUT 75 FEET AWAY, SOMEHOW MANAGING TO MISS SEVERAL OTHER CARS IN THE PARKING LOT. THANKFULLY, SHE AND OUR BABY WEREN'T HALFWAY OUT THE CAR DOOR WHEN THE CAR ROLLED AWAY. I VERIFIED THAT THE KEY CAN BE REMOVED WITH THE SHIFTER IN DRIVE. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE HONDA DEALER HERE IN COLORADO SPRINGS, AND THEY INDICATED THAT THERE MAY BE A MECHANICAL PROBLEM IN THE IGNITION SWITCH, BUT THAT IT ISN'T COVERED BY A WARRANTY OR RECALL. THEY ALSO SAID IT WOULD BE PRETTY EXPENSIVE TO FIX SINCE THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE IGNITION SWITCH WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE MECHANICAL PART AND THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE SWITCH HAS AN ANTI-THEFT FEATURE THAT READS A COMPUTER CHIP IN THE KEY AND THAT THE SYSTEM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPROGRAMMED (INCLUDING THE REMOTE CONTROLS FOR THE DOORS...). THE CAR HAD ABOUT 60,000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM. WE DON'T RECALL THE EXACT DATE OF WHEN IT HAPPENED, BUT IT WAS DURING THE SUMMER OF 2002 WHEN WE FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM. AFTER RECALL FOR IGNITION SWITCH WAS DONE, DESCRIBTION STATED IN RECALL HAPPENED. *AK
WHEN ON A HILL AND TAKE FOOT OFF THE BRAKES TO GIVE ACCELERATION VEHICLE WILL START TO ROLL BACK. DEALER WILL BE CONTACTED.*AK
WHILE STANDING ON A HILL CAR DRIFTS BACK A CAR LENGTH. HAS AAUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.*AK

PROBLEMS BEGAN WHEN I TOOK MY 1998 ACCORD EX IN TO HAVE THE 30,000 MILE SERVICE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE PADS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THEM REPLACED AND WENT IN FOR ANOTHER MAJOR SERVICE CHECK A YEAR LATER AND WAS TOLD THE CAR NEEDED NEW BRAKE PADS AGAIN, THAT'S ONLY 18,000 MILES LATER. THE HONDA DEALERSHIP MECHANIC TOLD ME REPLACING THE PADS EVERY 20,000 MILES IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR THESE CARS. I, THEN, TOOK THE CAR TO A NON-HONDA REPAIR SHOP WHO REPLACED THE PADS AND GUARANTEED THEM FOR 48,000 MILES. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE SECOND MAJOR SERVICE CHECK MY CAR HORN WAS WORKING. AFTER LEAVING HONDA'S SERVICE SHOP THE HORN HAS NOT WORKED PROPERLY AGAIN. WHEN I TURN THE ENGINE ON THE HORN TURNS OFF. AS LONG AS THE ENGINE'S OFF THE HORN WORKS WITHOUT A PROBLEM. I TOOK IT BACK TO HONDA WHO TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM IS PROBABLY RELATED TO A CABLE IN THE STEERING COLUMN AND WOULD COST ME OVER $200 TO REPAIR. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT COULD BE THE KEY SWITCH AND THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE SWITCH BUT MY CAR WAS NOT INCLUDED. AGAIN THEY ESTIMATE $200 TO REPAIR. THIS CAR HAS NOT HAD EXCESSIVE WEAR, IT IS A 1998 AND HAS LESS THAN 48,000 MILES ON IT TODAY. I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN WHAT THEY ARE TELLING ME AND AM VERY DISPLEASED WITH MY HONDA AND THE SERVICE THAT I AM GETTING.
THE ENGINE COMPLETELY BLEW OUT ONE DAY. I WAS ON THE WAY TO WORK AND THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION UNDER MY HOOD. HONDA PUT IN A RE-BUILT ENGINE AND I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE THEN. A FEW MONTHS LATER...THE PAINT GRADUALLY STARTED TO FADE AWAY ON THE ROOF. IT HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE AND WILL GET MUCH WORSE. IT IS A 1998 HONDA!! THIS STUFF SHOULDN'T BE HAPPENING!
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED HEADLIGHT LENSES WILL POP OFF OF THE VEHICLE. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
ALTERNATOR ALSO HAS NEED TO BE REPLACE DAT 39000 MILES. *AK
1998 HONDA ACCORD PAINT PROBLEM: MANUFACTURER DEFECT ON THE EXTERIOR PAINT CAUSING IT TO CRACK UNDERNEATH THE COATING LAYER. *NLM
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE JERKS CONSTANTLY AT SPEED OF 45MPH AND HIGHER. VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY DEALER WHO STATED ENGINE WAS FINE. CONSUMER VERY CONCERNED THAT VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY ACCELERATE AND CAUSE A COLLISION. *AK
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON AND OWNER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP. DEALER REPLACED OXYGEN SENSOR. A COUPLE OF THOUSAND MILES LATER, CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILED. *AK WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED ON A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE. THE RESULT WAS THAT IT WAS SOMETHING WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTOR, BUT THAT IT WAS USUALLY THE OXYGEN SENSOR. THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS CHANGED. ABOUT 200 MILES LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. CONSUMER TOOK TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTORS IN THESE VEHICLES. *JG
A PICK UP TRUCK TRAVELING AT 45 MPH SLAMMED IN THE BACK OF CONSUMER'S VEHICLE WHILE WAS SITTING. DRIVER'S SIDE SEATBACK COLLAPSED AND CONSUMER SUFFERED A RUPTURED DISC IN NECK. *AK VEHICLE WAS STOPPED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED DESTROYED. *JG
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. AFTER FOUR YEARS AND 49,278 MILES, A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS INSTALLED IN JULY OF 2002. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE NEW TRANSMISSIONS WERE MALFUNCTIONING; THEREFORE, THEY ONLY CHARGED THE CONTACT $1,000 FOR LABOR. IN MARCH OF 2008, THE VEHICLE NEEDS ANOTHER NEW TRANSMISSION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,278 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 102,658.
CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLITION, UPON IMPACT THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.*JB
WHILE DRIVING BALL JOINT BROKE AND VEHICLE NARROWLY AVOIDED A COLLISION.*AK CONSUMER DISCOVERD THERE WAS A RECALL, 99V069, ON THE LOWER BALL JOINT AND REQUESTED REIMBURSMENT, HOWEVER THE REQUEST WAS DENIED, CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER DID NOT APPLY TO VEHICLE.*JB
POWER DOOR LOCKS DO NOT WORK PROPERLY AND CONSUMER AT TIMES CANNOT GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WILL TAKE A LOOK AT THE VEHICLE.*AK CONSUMER ALSO STATED THAT WHEN SHE TURNED ON THE IGNITION TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS THEY WOULD NOT WORK AS WELL.*JB
MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD (VIN [XXX]) WAS RECALLED DUE TO A FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. AS A RESULT, I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALER ON JUNE 10, 2002. HONDA STATED IN ITS RECALL NOTICE THAT IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS TO MANUFACTURE PARTS FOR THE 1.3 MILLION VEHICLES INVOLVED." PRIOR TO THE AVAILABILITY OF THE REPLACEMENT PART, HONDA INSTRUCTED THE DEALER TO USE EXISTING STOCK TO REPLACE THE FAULTY PART. THIS REPLACEMENT PART IS NOW EXPERIENCING THE SAME STALLING PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALLED PART. THE INVOICE STATED THE FOLLOWING: CAR STALLS AT TIMES WHEN DRIVING. FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH PER AMERICAN HONDA. REPLACEMENT OF COMPLETE IGNITION SWITCH WILL RELIEVE IGNITION RECALL PER [XXX] AND [XXX] WITH AMERICAN HONDA. WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON THE CAR, THE COMPUTER BOARD CONTROLLING THE SRS SYSTEM FAILED. GIVEN HONDA'S SPOTTY REPUTATION WITH AIR BAGS FAILING TO DEPLOY, IT SEEMS TO BE A PATTERN WHEREBY THE MECHANISMS CONTROLLING THE AIR BAGS ARE FAULTY. A CIRCUIT BOARD SHOULD NOT BE FAILING WITH ONLY 38,000 MILES ON THE CAR, ESPECIALLY A HONDA.*AK

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING, CAUSING ENGINE TO STOP WHICH WAS DUE TO AN ALTERNATOR FAILURE.*AK *JG
WHILE STOPPING AT TRAFFIC LIGHT CLUTCH WILL ENGAGE WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING VEHICLE TO "JUMP" INTO INTERSECTION AND STALL. THIS OCCURRED 1-2 TIMES A DAY. VEHICLE HAS BEEN CHECKED BY DEALER. *AK THIS ONLY HAPPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS IN 1ST GEAR AND REVERSE. THE CLUTCH ENGAGES AND WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF GEAR UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAS DIED. THE BRAKES MUST BE APPLIED FIRMLY BECAUSE OF THE VEHICLE MOVING IRRADICALLY. THE PRESSURE PLATE MASTER CYLINDER AND SLAVE CYLINDER HAVE BEEN REPLACED. *JG
I HAVE A 1998 ACCORD V6 WITH 78K MILES AND SLIPPING TRANSMISSION LIKE MANY MANY OTHERS. HONDA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ONLY ON 2000-2002 MODELS AS THEY WOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY ANYWAY. BUT THIS IS DESIGN/QUALITY CONTROL ISSUE AND THE TRANSMISIONS FROM 98-02 ARE ALL THE SAME. SO 1998 & 1999 CARS SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL AS THEY ALL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. YOU CAN GO TO COMPLAINTSTATION. COME FOR SOME PEOPLE'S POST ON THESE TRANSMISSION FAILURES, AND MANY OTHER INTERNET SITES AS GREAT MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY THIS. THIS IS GREATLY A SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL, BECAUSE YOU CAN NEVER RELY ON YOUR CAR TO ACCELERATE WHEN YOU NEED TO, AND TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTS ON ITS' OWN IN HIGHWAY FROM D4 TO D2 CAUSING AN IMMEDIATE ENGINE BRAKING. SKIDDED ON GRAVEL AND HIT A TREE--AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY AND I, DRIVER-OCCUPANT SUSTAINED SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY
THERE WERE NO PARTS AVAILABLE IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE RECALL ON THE IGNITION SWITCH. *JB *SCC
IN 2002, WE BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE AXLE SEALS LEAKING ON OUR 1998 HONDA ACCORD. WE HAVE ALWAYS FOLLOWED HONDA'S RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, AND THUS TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THEY HAVE SEEN THE CAR FOR THIS PROBLEM 3 TIMES, REPLACING THE SEALS AT LEAST ONCE. THEY NOW ADVISE US THAT BY DIAGNOSING THE SYMPTOMS (THEY CANNOT DISSEMBLE THE TRANSMISSION) THEY FEEL THE LEAKING IS DUE TO WORN DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS AND THE ONLY SOLUTION IS A NEW TRANSMISSION. WE HAVE REPORTED TO HONDA NORTH AMERICAN WHO ADVISES THEY CAN DO NOTHING AS THIS IS A MAINTENANCE PROBLEM. IF SO, WHY WASN'T THIS CAUGHT DURING ONE OF THE MANY VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIP? WHEN THE PROBLEMS BEGAN, THIS CAR ONLY HAD 75,000 MILES ON IT. WITH THE LEAK, THERE HAS ALSO BEEN CLUNKING AND SLOPPING SHIFTING, ALMOST SINCE THE FIRST DAY WE OWNED THE CAR. *JB
THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCEC SYMPTOMS OF RECALL 02V-120 FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH PRIOR TO RECALL NOTIFICATON, ALSO THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCE LOSS OF POWER ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. NLM

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V120000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH); HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER STATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE A SECOND TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

THE CAR ENGINE STOPS SUDDENLY AT VARIOUS SPEEEDS. AFTER STOPPING COMPLETELY, IT WILL RESTART. IT HAS NO WARNING AND HAS STOPPED SUDDENLY AT 65 MPH ON INTERSTATE. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DEALER WAS INFORMED AND DID NOT KNOW THE PROBLEM. HAD TO TAKE TO A NON-DEALER TO DETERMINE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH. *AK
I PURCHASE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD WITH THE INTENTIONS OF KEEPING IT FOR A LIFETIME AT 30,000 UNFORTUNATELY AT 50,000 THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO JERK WHEN YOU BEGAN TO BRAKE. IT SEEMS THE CAR DIDNT KNOW WHAT GEAR IT WAS IN. AFTER HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ATTEMPTING TO FIND THE PROBLEM HONDA CORP. ASSURED ME THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH A PROBLEM IN ANY OF THEIR CARS AND HAD NOT HAD ANY COMPLAINTS ON ANY OF THEIR 1998 ACCORDS. THEY THEN CHARGED ME 1,500 DOLLAR FOR THE REPAIR NOT COUNTING THE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS I PAID THEM TO SIMPLY FIND THE PROBLEM. NOW JUST 6 MONTHS LATER MY TRANSMISSION FEELS AS IF IT'S SLIPPING WHEN I PARK ON A HILL. AGAIN THEY DON'T WANT TO ADMITT TO ANY KNOWLEDGE OF ANY PAST PROBLEMS. NOW I'M SURE THEY ARE AWARE OF PAST PROBLEMS BECAUSE IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THE TRANSMISSION I RECEIVED 6 MONTHS AGO WAS A REPAIRED TRANSMISSION FROM ANOTHER ACCORD. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP MYSELF????? ANYONE PLEASE HELP!
CONSUMER STATES, WAS PULLING OUT IN REVERSE, VEHICLE WENT OUT OF CONTROL FORWARDS AND BACKARDS AND WAS STOPPED BY A CONCRETE WALL. DEALER HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED.*JBTHIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION HAPPENED ONCE PRIOR TO PREVIOUS ACCIDENT. CONSUMER REPORTED INCIDENT BUT TO NO AVAIL.
