I installed (2) identical Advance Auto Parts Platinum rear brake rotors on my vehicle. Both rotors were installed at the same time, in the same manner, and under normal conditions. After approximately (1) mile of normal driving on of the rear brake rotors catastrophically failed by completely separating at the hat (the center mounting section). The opposite side rear rotor, installed at the same time, did not fail. The failure occurred without warning and resulted in immediate loss of braking integrity at that wheel. This type of structural failure presents a significant safety risk, including the potential for sudden brake loss, wheel lockup, or loss of vehicle control. The vehicle was not being driven aggressively, and there were no abnormal conditions prior to the failure. The failed rotor has been preserved and is available for inspection. Photographs documenting the separation are also available. A brake rotor should not experience complete structural separation under normal driving conditions, especially immediately after installation. This appears to be a manufacturing or material defect that poses a serious safety hazard. I am submitting this complaint to document the defect and to help prevent potential injury or accidents involving similar components.
The contact owns a 2009 Honda Accord. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken for an alignment. While performing the alignment, the parking brake activated independently. After the service was completed, the contact disengaged the parking brake and noticed that the vehicle seemed a bit more difficult than normal to steer. The contact pulled over, stopped, and became aware that the rear rotors were overheated and turning red. The contact stated that the parking brake was still activated even though the instrument panel had indicated that the parking brake was disengaged. The contact turned off the vehicle until the vehicle had cooled off and then returned home with the vehicle. Once the contact was home and the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the parking brake was still engaged even after disengaging the parking brake. The contact stated that the brakes were still overheated. The contact also noticed that the brake pads had started to fracture from the overheating. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000.
HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND HAVE TAKEN IT IN FOR INSPECTIONS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM WHICH CAME BACK WITH NO ISSUES. REPORTED TO OWNER/CEO OF COMPANY AS WELL. BRAKES DO NOT WORK WHEN USED IN AN EMERGENCY. THE PEDAL WILL GO TO THE FLOOR BUT THE CAR WILL NOT STOP EVEN AFTER PUNCHING THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES. WORSE WHEN ON A DECLINE OF A HILL. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REDONE AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTED AND ENDED UP IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE FAULTINESS OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I BOUGHT CAR CPO AND REAR PADS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE NEW. A YEAR LATER, I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY REAR BRAKE PADS (HIGH PITCH NOISE, BURNT SMELL). TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP. THEY CHARGED ME OVER $160.00 FOR CLEANING AND LUBRICATING. A MONTH AND A HALF LATER - THE SAME PROBLEM APPEARS AGAIN. TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC. I WAS CHARGED $220 FOR CLEANING, LUBRICATING AND NEW BRAKE PADS REPLACEMENT. TWO AND A HALF YEARS LATER, STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN. RUSTED REAR ROTORS, 20% LEFT OF THE REAR PADS. ALL NEEDS A REPLACEMENT - $350.00 BILL. I HAD PUT A LITTLE LESS THAN 20K MILES FOR THE PAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS. FRONT BRAKES HAVEN'T HAD AN ISSUE AND ARE STILL USABLE. IT APPEARS THAT I AM NOT ALONE AND A LOT OF OWNERS OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL REPORT THE SAME ISSUES. THIS IS SO RIDICULOUS. I WOULD LIKE HONDA TO ACKNOWLEDGE BAD DESIGN AND REPLACE IT IN THE VEHICLE ALTOGETHER.
THE BRAKES PADS ON MY 2009 HONDA ACCORD LX ARE WEARING OUT EXPECTIONALLY FAST. EVERY 6 MONTHS. THERE IS A LAWSUIT PENDING AGAINST HONDA FOR FIX. I WANT TO JOIN THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT DUE TO HONDA SELLING ME A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.

LAST WEEK I HEARD A RUBBING/SCRAPING NOISE COMING FROM THE RIGHT REAR OF MY 2009 HONDA ACCORD. TODAY I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERS AND HAD TO HAVE THE RIGHT REAR CALIPER REPLACED, NEW BRAKE PADS AND NEW ROTORS. THIS VEHICLE IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF AND IS GARAGE KEPT. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY I NEEDED NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS AS MY CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 22,000 MILES ON IT. I AM EXTREMELY UPSET BY THIS.

RECENTLY, I TOOK MY CAR TO MY LOCAL SERVICE STATION FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND SAFETY CHECK, AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR DISC BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY WORN AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT, WHEREAS THE FRONT DISC BRAKE LININGS WERE FINE. THIS INFORMATION CAME AS A SURPRISE BECAUSE REAR ARE GENERALLY LAST MORE THAN 70,000- 1000,000 MILES, AND CERTAINLY LONGER THE THAN THE FRONT PADS. THE SERVICE STATION ATTENDANT TOLD ME THAT PREMATURE WEAR ON REAR BRAKE PADS IS A WELL- APPRECIATED DEFECT FOR THE 2009 ACCORD, AND HONDA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS EVEN SETTLED A CLASS ACTION SUIT IN 2010 RELATING SPECIFICALLY TO THIS MATTER. FROM THE BEGINNING UPON TAKING DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE, THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS WERE NOT RELEASING PROPERLY. WE NOTICED A BURNING SMELL ONCE AFTER DRIVING, BUT NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON. WE ALSO NOTICED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS NOT ALWAYS RELEASING, AS PER THE WARNING LIGHT. AT A ROUTINE OIL SERVICE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT RIGHT REAR CALIPER WAS NOT FULL DISENGAGING. THE ENTIRE REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE CLEANED AND ADJUSTED, THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED. BOTH REAR CALIPERS HAD TO BE REPLACED. IN THE PAST, OUR VEHICLES HAVE GONE 90,000 MILES BEFORE REPLACING ONLY THE PADS, AND THEN ONLY THE FRONT. TO REPLACE AN ENTIRE REAR BAKE ASSEMBLY INDICATES SOME SORT OF DEFECT OR ENGINEERING PROBLEM. I TOOK MY HONDA IN FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND WAS TOLD THAT MY BRAKE PADS WHERE VERY LOW AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND THIS OUT WITH ONLY 17,660 MILES ON THE CAR. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND OTHER OWNERS OF THIS MODEL SHOULD BE AWARE. *TR

THE REAR BRAKES BEGAN MAKING A GRINDING AND HUMMING SOUND. AFTER TAKING IT TO A DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF 348.00 DOLLARS. THEY FAILED ABOUT 40000 MILES BEFORE THE WARRANTIED DISTANCE OF 70000 MILES. I LATER FOUND A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT (BROWNE VS HONDA) IN WHICH IT WAS DETAILED THAT HONDA WAS TO PAY 150 DOLLARS FOR THE PARTS AND 125 DOLLARS FOR THE LABOR. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED THAT MY BRAKE PADS WERE DEFECTIVE OR ISSUED A RECALL. THE CASE ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES UNDER 3 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL PURCHASE, BUT BECAUSE OF MY MILITARY SERVICE MY VEHICLE HAS ONLY HALF OF THE EXPECTED MILEAGE 6 YEARS AFTER I BOUGHT IT. I NOW EXPECTED TO SHOULDER THE COST OF DEFECTIVE PARTS AND LABOR AS WELL AS AN INHERENT RISK TO MY SAFETY BASED ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THEY WOULD NOT HONOR THE CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST THEM, AND THAT IT WAS SOMEHOW MY PROBLEM NOW. *TR

LOUD WHINING NOISES COMING FROM THE REAR WHEELS WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, CAUSED US TO HAVE THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER CHECK THE BRAKES. THE REAR BRAKE PADS WERE VERY BADLY WORN THROUGH. THE CAR IS DRIVEN AT HIGHWAY SPEED APPROXIMATELY 50% OF THE TIME, MEANING THE BRAKES WOULD NOT HAVE EXCESSIVE USE. THE DEALER TOLD US THAT THE TYPE OF DRIVING WE DO AND HOW WE DRIVE CAUSED THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT HONDA HAS HAD TWO CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, HERE IS THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA. THE SETTLEMENT DOES NOT BENEFIT US SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW IN JULY 2009. WE HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT MANY DRIVERS MUST REPEATEDLY REPLACE THESE BRAKE PADS.
