NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda Civic. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The fuel pump gave out . The Honda dealership tried to fix the car multiple times ande fuel pump they fixed is steal leaking fuel. I was in the street driving home and the car auto stalled on me. I spent almost 2 grand to get it fixed and the dealership charged me and it got worse.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle hesitated to start, and then failed to accelerate as intended. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer but was not diagnosed. The dealer related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I am not sur what is causing all of the lights coming on dash as well as all safety features being lost when driving the car. Right now it is but the light and warnings may cut off. Cr stalls at times. Hose keeps coming off the turbo causing the car no to accelerate in traffic. Yes, without any of the features working my safety and others safety is at risk Yes, The vehicle has been in the shop four times in 1 month for the same issue they say its fixed but the lights keep coming back on and I keep losing all safety features in the car. This is an on going issue 7/31 had car serviced for issue 8/10 light back on, hose loose again, 8/12 lights on again. 9/7 light back on have to take car to shop again. This is the 4th time.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that there was an abnormal sound coming from the fuel tank while driving. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
I was driving on a relatively hot day around 85F and the car AC was working fine but in the course of 30 min the ac started blowing hot air on my face while I was driving on freeway. The temperature was set to 69F but it still kept blowing hot air. After a while it started giving me a headache and I had to turn it off. I got it checked by Honda dealership and there is an Evaporator leak in the car confirming why I got a headache. This is a safety risk to the passengers of the vehicle as high concentrations of the ac refrigerant can leak in the car potential poisoning or making the driver loose consciousness and loose control of the car causing an accident. The problem has been confirmed by the dealership as there is an extended warranty for the condenser due to the high pressures of the newer refrigerant causing holes in condenser and evaporator but there is NO extended warranty for the evaporator which poses a greater risk to the drivers than the condenser since the part is inside of the cabin.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while using the ignition key, the vehicle would not immediately start. Eventually the failure progressed, and the vehicle was not able to be started. The battery was replaced and the next day the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the starter was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,000.
Gasoline mixes with the engine oil and causes the vehicle to stop / slow down to 8 mph while moving on highway. Oil smells like gasoline.
When making a left turn or curving left the steering wheel is sticking. If not slightly jerked then the steering wheel will remain in the left position. When holding the break, not in park, and turn the steering wheel you can hear a pop- the sticky releasing. It is unsafe. I have confirmed (and found this website) through reddit and [XXX] , many others with this generation car are having the same problem. Car has 75,000 miles on it, this began around 50,000. We were hit on the passenger side of our car. Another car ran a red light and slammed into that side of our car. The front passenger sustained damage to their head, neck, back, shoulder and knee from the impact. The air bags did not deploy in the front or back seats, on the passenger side or the drivers side. The front passenger’s knee was bruised and scraped from the door colliding with their leg. The air bags in the other car deployed.
Steering has a “sticky” feeling. Similar to recall on 22-24 civics. Steering wheel will get stuck in a long turn and require extra force to correct back to center, leading to swerving into other lanes of traffic leading to accident/injuries. Seal in Steering Rack and Pinion fails, creating suction in a turn and leads to stuck steering. Problem confirmed by dealer on car with 63k miles, denied as warranty or tsb. Over $4,000 quoted to replace. No warning lamps or messages displayed. Will lead to accidents and or injuries.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the steering wheel felt sticky upon turning the steering wheel in either direction, and the steering wheel required excessive force to return to the center. The local dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The vehicle had not yet been diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the steering gear was previously replaced due to the same failure in 2023. The failure mileage was 101,000.
I was driving down the highway near where I live in Hanford California the highway is 198. I was going 68, 69 mph. No one was on the road my car literally slammed on its brakes and jerked to the right.this has happened 2times I have turned off the assist I’m to afraid it will happen again. I am bringing it into the dealership tomorrow and also have them check my airbags the light in the dashboard intermittently keeps coming on then after a bit it will turn off. The first time I brought it in for the airbag lights coming on they informed me that it was due to me pulling the seat back to far I am 5 foot four. I don’t normally pull the seat back. It would be more closer to the steering wheel for me, but there was a problem supposedly with the connection that is under the seat it doesn’t make me feel too safe to think that me moving. My seat is going to prevent my airbags from deploying God for bid if I get into an accident.
On Sunday morning, 8/27/2023, I entered my car after having driven it an hour prior for around 30 minutes to and from a sandwich shop. I entered the vehicle and turned the engine on without issue, and attempted to accelerate. After making it about ten feet, the acceleration on the gas pedal suddenly stopped working. I would push the gas pedal and the car would not move, nor the engine even rev. Confused, I parked and turned the car off and on again. Upon turning the car on, the engine stalled for a brief moment before slowly engaging. It was at that moment that I felt the entire car shifting back and forth, shaking. I immediately shut the car off out of fear and waited for a few moments before making a second attempt, being met with the exact same result. The next day, I entered the vehicle and attempted to turn it on again. This time, it started up and the engine engaged without any issue. However, I was now bombarded by dozens of error messages on my dashboard with systems such as emergency break, ABS, power steering, etc. giving me warnings. This morning, I had a mechanic come out and attempt diagnose the issue. He was confused when running the diagnostic tool through the systems, as he received "permanent codes" regarding several issues with the car. Taking some time to research, his opinion was that there may be an issue with the fuel pump motor. There is an open recall on 2019 Honda Civics for the fuel pump, however my specific vehicle does not seem to show up as needing this fix when I search with my VIN. After taking some time to check things, the Mechanic and myself proceeded to test drive and ensure that the car seemed safe to operate, where the mechanic approved my vehicle and encouraged me to send a report.
The air conditioning system has a leak. There are a lot of complaints about it online and they already issued an extended warranty for Civic vehicles covering up to year 2018 for a leaking condenser. Right now I have no air conditioning.
I got pulled over and they said my plates belong to a different and different year
Several times, while driving, my car would randomly slam on the brakes when there were no other cars around. I feel this is a safety issue that could cause an accident to the tear end of the car.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that there was a fuel odor coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was hesitating while accelerating. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that the diagnostic test would not be paid for unless it was proven that the failure was related to the fuel pump. The contact was informed that based on the failure mentioned in the recall, the symptoms experienced had not been qualified to be prioritized. The contact believed that vehicle should be prioritized for the recall repair. The failure mileage was 93,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Since purchasing the vehicle at around 35k miles there’s been an occasional clicking / knocking noise when turning. It’s not consistent, but it seems to be the start of the CV axle failing or something with the struts. I’m having the vehicle looked over, but again I’ve seen multiple complaints of this specific issue and wanted to report it. These parts should not be failing this early.
This car followed me all the way home. I knew the driver was following me because I took a fake route home. I eventually stopped and he stopped with me. This driver is not mentally stable enough to own a license.
I was on my way to take my baby to daycare and all of a sudden fuel gauge system problem popped up. And then everything shut off. Had to park very close to the road because I was on a small road with culverts on each side. I had fuel in it I just drove it the day before with no problems. I don’t feel that’s a very safe feature on the car. I had no warning and my baby was with me. If it’s just a fuel gauge problem why did my whole car shut off? I have researched on Honda that 2019-2021 civics had a fuel pump recall but my when I put my vin number in it tells me no recalls. Just want some answers since my car isn’t that old.
Hello, I refueled my vehicle on 07/11/2023 after a completed service request at First Texas Honda on 06/30/2023. The vehicle now smells like gas or fuel. The smell is overpowering and makes me dizzy when I drive and gives me a headache. The VIN: [XXX] has previously been associated with a recall on the fuel pump. The additional repairs that were completed included: The infotainment system: The car infotainment system has also shutoff while driving. The dealership could not re-create the issue or concern. Air conditioner: There was also an issue with the driver side of the vehicle' air conditioner. The air conditioner wasn't working. Thank you for your efforts to maintain the safety of my vehicle. Warm Regards, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The car has been stalling to start for the last week. On 7/15/23 I parked my vehicle, all windows were up, I turned the vehicle off, got out and locked the doors, walked away and all of my windows went down half way and the sunroof opened, it has been stalling to speed up like it does usually. 12/19/2023 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2017-2020 model year Honda vehicles (NHTSA #23V-858). The fuel pump impeller was improperly moulded, resulting in low density impellers.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled after start-up. Additionally, all the windows and sunroof inadvertently opened while the vehicle was parked and shut off. The contact related the failure to a faulty electrical system; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
Fuel filter went on vehicle causing it to stall with my child in the car. Dealership misdiagnosed and replaced the battery causing the fuel pump to fail going down a very steep hill. There's a VIN specific recall on my year, make, and model of car; but not my specific VIN. Yet my car has all the issues and descriptions that were defined in the recall warning
My 2019 Honda Civic is experiencing paint chipping on the mirrors and door handles. I've noticed others reporting similar problems. The paint is literally bubbling off. When I contacted Honda of America, they acknowledged that it's atypical and indicative of a product defect, but stated they couldn't assist as it's out of warranty and no recalls have been issued at this time. It’s crazy to me a car that spends the majority of the time in a garage has this type of issue. Keep in mind that I live in Southern California where we don’t experience much in the realm of harsh weather.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that on three separate occasions, the rear seat belts malfunctioned. The contact stated that the rear driver’s side seat belt failed to retract. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on separate occasions the rear passenger’s side seat belt failed to retract. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that while driving, he noticed that the car seat was tilted to the side unsupported by the seat belt. The contact stated that the seat belt appeared to have been loosened. The contact was concerned for the safety of his children. Additionally, the contact stated that while the brake pedal was depressed, he heard a loud screeching sound located at the rear passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake pad had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, several months later the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed hat the brake pads had failed again and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was denied service and advised to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was advised to call the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000
The AC system on the 2019 Honda Civic Sport Hatchback Touring stopped blowing cold air out of all the vents (driver and passenger) After turning off the car, only the passenger and right center vent blew a little colder air but the driver vent blew hot air. We took it into the dealership for inspection and their finding was Compressor and Condenser are dry along with evaporator core needing replacement. They also found that the freon level was low. The dealership told me that Honda extended the warranty on the compressor and condenser due to the new freon they are using which is known to cause issue with the AC system. They seen evaporator core going bad on other Civics as well but aren't sure why Honda isn't covering evaporator core yet.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that her granddaughter was occupying the rear seat with the seat belt buckled, however, the seat belt failed to unbuckle and instead tightened, causing her granddaughter to have difficulty while breathing. The contact cut the seat belt and released her granddaughter. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH and exiting a highway, the steering wheel became firm without warning. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to an independent mechanic who stated that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed at the dealer. The failure mileage was 75,000.
30,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND MY A/C COMPRESSOR IS ON-OP, THEREFORE I CANNOT DEFROST MY WINDSHIELD AND KEEP THE FOG OFF IT IN CERTAIN CONDITIONS CAUSING A VISIBILITY HAZZARD.
Air conditioner condenser & compressor stopped working
I'm having problems with my 2019 Honda civic.fuel pump problems and my car has only 48000 miles on it.i read the recalls on Honda civics and different sites state different things.1 site says it has a recall on the fuel system and Honda says no.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. An unknown warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the high-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who then diagnosed a failure with the low-pressure fuel pump. The vehicle was repaired at no additional cost to the contact. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), and the VIN was included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but declined to reimburse the cost of the high-pressure fuel pump because the component was not covered under the recall. The failure mileage was 26,000.
The car won't start after I've driven it and it won't turn over it shakes and acts as if out of gas or a loose connection??electric..I have to wait for 20 min.before it will start.,and I'm able to drive it.other sites I've punched my vin number at states Honda has a fuel pump recall for my car and other sites says it don't.??
My vehicle had an open recall for its fuel pump back in 2021 but I wasn’t having an issue at the time of the recall as of 6 months ago my car won’t turn on and the fuel smell that is in and thru out my car is so bad that. I cannot drive it , it has shut off on me while driving , I took it to a dealership in Fresno ca only to be told there are no open recalls , I clearly told them it was back in 2021 that I received a letter telling me of this but cannot locate the letter I did my research and my year make and model car has the recall but it’s out dated what do I do ,
Potential steering issues. Steering will randomly "stick", at around 60+ mph if not prepared driver could over react and thus be in an accident or cause one. The "stick" is very subtle and slight. As I am aware of it I easily corrected by bringing it back in alignment. Mechanic has performed diagnostic scan and nothing was revealed w/ the power steering. I do see that NHTSA is investigating similar issues w/ 2022 and 2023 Honda Civics. All statements are exactly as I am experiencing only my vehicle is a 2019 Honda Civic. This has been occurring for the passed couple of months. I have about 53k miles on my vehicle.
UNKNOWN.
The air conditioning system in my 2019 Honda Civic has experienced a total failure of the evaporator core due to a refrigerant leak. This follows previous documented failures of the AC condenser and compressor shaft seal, both of which are currently under Honda-issued 10-year warranty extensions. Various other users have also reported these issues with their 10th generation civics. The failure of the AC system prevents the defroster from effectively dehumidifying the cabin. During rain or high-humidity conditions, the interior of the windshield fogs up rapidly and cannot be cleared, severely obstructing my field of vision while driving. In high-temperature environments, the cabin temperatures reach dangerous levels within minutes. This poses a significant health risk for passengers, particularly children and the elderly, and causes driver fatigue/distraction due to heat exhaustion. Despite multiple repairs to other components in this specific R1234yf system, the system continues to fail. Honda has diagnosed a leaking evaporator core, a part known within the owner community to have the same manufacturing defects as the already-warrantied condenser and compressor. I am requesting an investigation into why the evaporator core was excluded from the current 10-year warranty extensions despite having the same failure mode as the condenser and compressor parts.
Ac compressor and evaporator leaking due to manufacturer fault
The vehicle's condenser and evaporator have failed. I recently purchased my leased vehicle and at the time of purchase, I was not notified that there is an extended warranty provided upon the date of purchase if the condenser is to fail. I received a letter in the mail 2 months later after it failed about this issue. Thinking I would be covered I took my vehicle to the dealer and was notified that the condenser did in fact fail however the vehicle's evaporator has also failed and that is not covered by the warranty. The condenser was not able to be replaced without also repairing the evaporator at the same time which cost $2,000. With the results of climate change, the summers are getting hotter which imposes major health/safety issues. The letter received makes it clear if the condenser is to fail due to manufacturer issues it would be covered however if caused by an outside source it would not. It is very clear due to the condenser failing it caused the evaporator to fail OR the evaporator was also faulty already to begin with which should then ALSO be covered in the extended warranty. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The A/C stopped working about 3 & a half years into the vehicle's life which is well past the regular warranty time frame.
On [XXX], I purchased a 2019 Honda Civic Si (VIN: [XXX] ) from Zeigler Toyota of Racine (WI). At the time of sale, the dealership concealed critical safety-related information, including three major prior damage events (roof, front, rear), multiple Illinois auction sales, and pre-installed aftermarket suspension modifications that prevented proper rear alignment. No disclosures were made. After purchase, I was referred to Zeigler Honda of Racine, where a certified Honda technician confirmed the vehicle could not be aligned due to these undisclosed modifications, and would soon become unsafe to drive. Improper rear alignment creates risks of unpredictable handling, tire failure, and catastrophic loss of control. Zeigler Honda attempted to discreetly order parts without warranty company knowledge and failed to document inspection results or service records, indicating concealment efforts. Zeigler Auto Group operates 84 franchises across 41 locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, and reports annual sales exceeding $2.2 billion. Given their size and multi-state operations, systemic concealment of structural and mechanical safety defects by affiliated dealerships poses a significant public safety threat across state lines. I have submitted complaints to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, DATCP, WisDOT, FTC, BBB, Honda Corporate, and the Illinois Attorney General. Given the severity of the defects, concealment, and Zeigler’s multi-state reach, I respectfully request NHTSA investigate Zeigler Auto Group for patterns of selling unsafe vehicles without proper disclosure. Supporting documentation is available upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Sticky steering at 60+ mph, more frequent after car has been running for 25 minutes. If driver isn’t expecting sticky steering, over correction of problem could cause an accident, especially at high speeds. Complaints have been filed for 2020+ model years, statements of issue are the same as I am experiencing. My car has 53k miles.
The steering sticks in a spot while driving. You have to really pull on steering wheel which causes it to oversteer and is very dangerous especially in curves. This happens everytime the car is driven. Can be available to be inspected anytime.
Steering wheel sticks during minor corrections to keep on center when going straight on highway causing over correction. Problem starts after car has been running about 20-30 mins.
Once the car gets above 50MPH the steering feels sticky or notchy, like the wheels are stuck in a rut, and it stays that way at any speed until shut off. It's impossible to keep the car centered in the lane as the slightest turn of the wheel in either direction is too much, and so you turn the wheel in the other direction to compensate and then that's too much. The car feels entirely unsafe, especially on the highway. It was especially nerve racking with a semi in the next lane. There were no warning lights or codes. The car was taken to the local Honda dealership and the technician confirmed the steering problem, searched the tech line forums and found multiple cases with similar complaints. Replacement of the steering rack was recommended.
All the car has problems all dash warning coming up from nowhere it’s no safety the other day I was driving 55 mph power steering lock brake failure very un safety and if you Google the problem I’m not the only customer with this issue it’s a loooot of people having this issues
Gas pedal broke off in a 20 mph collision- air bags exploded
My trunk opens on it’s own while riding down the road! Every day several times a day I have to pull over and close my trunk because it opens on its own! It’s very dangerous as I have had things fly out of my truck bc of this! I just bought the car in October 2022! There are a lot of other complaints online when I looked up why does my trunk keep opening on my 2019 civic! From my understanding it is the 2019-2020 Honda civics! IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY!
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired.
