NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Sticky steering wheel! Driving straight on a flat road but you need to make sure your grip is good because it steers by itself!
There is a possible steering rack issue with the 2023 CR-V in which there is a momentary "sticky" or resistant feeling when trying to make steering corrections in order for the vehicle to track in a straight line. This issue seems to be worsening over time, as the sticky feeling is evidently felt at speeds above 30-40 MPH. When driving long distances, it also develops driver fatigue as there is extra steering input required to drive straight. This problem has been reproduced/confirmed by the dealership, and the dealership will be replacing the steering rack to alleviate the issue. No warning lamps or messages appear regarding this problem. This particular vehicle has approximately 10,000 miles.
Steering appears to go blank when slightly turning it. Mostly noticeable at higher speeds. Feels like the steering gets stuck then releases. Dealer says they cannot replicate the issue. Whippers are slow on their highest setting.
The dealership has the car because of STICKY STEERING. While driving in the freeway, the steering is sticky and makes it hard to operate the vehicle properly. This is a major liability because it feels you don't have full control of the vehicle. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. Most critical of this error is there are no warning signals nor error codes
As you drive the car, the steering wheel sticks/ binds/ freezes and every second the driver must move the steering wheel to correct the direction of the vehicle. It is a very serious safety issue. I am advised that the part necessary for the fix is on back order along with 18-20 others.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed on the highway, the contact became aware that the front passenger's side tire was flat. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The contact called Honda Roadside Assistance to replace the tire with the spare tire and became aware that the vehicle was not equipped with a spare tire. The vehicle was towed to a tire shop, where the tire was replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the Honda Hybrid vehicles were not required to be equipped with a spare tire. The contact stated that she was concerned for her safety. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 6,870.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel was sticking. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver had to overcompensate to correct the steering of the vehicle while driving. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be test driven. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 9,300.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the power steering functionality was inoperable. The contact stated that the steering wheel had seized. The contact stated that the dealer was located directly across the street. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed steering wheel rack and pinion. The contact was informed that the steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the parts had been ordered and would not be available until April 2024. The vehicle was not repaired; however, the contact was advised that the vehicle could not be released, and no further assistance was provided. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,600.
I purchased my vehicle new in 2/2023. In December, I began noticing a "tightness" in the steering of my vehicle which began to get worse. On 12/26, I took my vehicle in to have oil changed, etc., and also told them about the steering issue. Upon completion I was told that the steering issue was something that "Honda" was working on and that the part would be ordered and in at the end of February. I was 6th in line so far. I asked if the car was safe to drive and was told yes. "Part Ordered-Rack & Pinion-Warranty-Will Call" was handwritten on my receipt. On 2/5 I called for status and was told that the new delivery date was 4/8 and there were now many people on the list. On 2/8 I called Honda directly and was told that I had to provide them with the part # & part name which I do not have. I tried to explain that I did not believe there WAS a part # and if she looked into it, she would find that this is an issue - no, I had to provide the information. I then asked for a case # for my call. I am beginning to be afraid to drive my vehicle and definitely feel I need to go on record before someone is killed in an accident. I certainly better have two hands on the wheel and be ready to use them at all times. I am making a large car payment and need my vehicle for business. I have two upcoming trips which I guess I am going to have to cancel because I have no vehicle. I cannot afford to rent a vehicle! I researched and found many, many complaints have been made on this same issue. There are no warning signs other than the steering tightening up where you can't turn, change lanes, etc. Yes, I do plan to contact an attorney. I feel I must to protect me and my family - or anyone - in case an accident occurs. This is definitely a safety issue. Honda is aware and has yet to issue a recall. I understand why because they don't have a "fix"; however someone needs to look into the matter as soon as possible. Thank you.
Steering wheel sticks even at low speeds, car has 3000 miles, started problems at 2500 miles. Dealer says part available end of April, problem reported in dec,2023. Feel unsafe driving this car, this is unexcepable
Went to the dealership December 2, 2023 and they came to the conclusion that the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. We are still waiting...
-Steering Rack - EPS rack. -steering is sticky at times and need to over correct to loosen steering -no - no, appointment set for mid December -no warnings.
Vehicle has 10,000 miles on it, steering started feeling strange and gradually got worse to the point we did not feel safe driving it. It was hard to keep the vehicle driving in a straight line and would stick when you tried to turn either direction. A few time we almost hit the vehicle next to us because it would suddenly unstick or break free and the vehicle would lunge in the direction of the turn. We took it to our local Honda service center and they diagnosed it as a defective steering gear assembly (rack & pinion). Part is on backorder and we were told it could be up to four months for a replacement. Vehicle has been at the dealership for two weeks. We were given a loaner but are restricted as to how many miles and where we can drive it, no trips over 100mi.
When I am driving on a straight road, the steering wheel sticks and I have to exert more and more force to turn the steering wheel. As i adjust the steering to stay within the lines, when I attempt to turn the steering wheel ever so slightly, it will not allow me to turn it easily. It requires more force and it will seem like it is turning gears or like little noiseless clicks. The car steering becomes a constant effort of trying to compensate for the steering stickiness. It is like it will not turn the wheel slightly, it's more of a jerky situation.
Sticky steering wheel. Took to dealership and rack and pinion needs to be replaced already. This has been on backorder for months.
Same issue as Honda Civic "Sticky Steering". Once you start to get above 40 MPH, you feel a sticking point in the steering (left and right) when trying to make minor lane adjustments.
The contact owned a 2023 Honda CRV. The contact stated that while her husband was stopped at a red light, he was rear-ended by another vehicle driving at approximately 65 MPH causing the contact's husband to veer into the intersection. As a result, the vehicle was also crashed by 4 motorcycles. The contact's husband sustained 14 broken bones (2 in his back,2 in his nose,5 broken ribs, a break in his right arm, and four places on his rotary cuff), a skull fracture with a brain bleed that caused a stroke on the scene. No air bags deployed. The contact stated the other unknown parties involved also sustained injuries and had to be taken to the trauma center as well. The police report confirmed no air bags deployed. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was totaled. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
Our 2023 CR-V began having noticeable issues involving the steering around 6000 miles after 9 months of ownership. The steering wheel initially began to develop a tendency to remain centered requiring additional effort to initiate a turn. Once turning it felt normal. Over time the problem became worse, and the wheel began to stick when turning as well. At 6500 miles there is a noticeable resistance to initiating turns, or centering the wheel from a turn. Turns to the right tend to stick more than turns to the left. It is to the point now that in moderate turns you can let go of the steering wheel and it will remain in a turn. A slight knocking noise has also developed. When driving straight down the road it is extremely difficult to keep the vehicle centered in the lane. The effort required increases with speed and narrower lanes. Often the small corrections that would be normal for keeping a vehicle centered in a lane are not possible. The sticking tendency is significant enough now even the smallest corrections meant to stay centered in a lane result in the car darting back and forth. This is independent of the lane keeping system, it happens with the system on and off. With the system on, the lane keeping system appears to struggle as well. At approximately 6500 miles the car went to the dealer, and it as quickly diagnosed as being in need of a new steering rack. The service center said it would be more annoying than unsafe and did not see the need to keep the car. The part was supposed to be ordered by the service center but we were told it was on backorder with no ETA. The vehicle has approximately 6800 miles now and the issue is continuing to get worse and the vehicle can be difficult to handle in dense traffic with narrow lanes. The primary concern is how much worse will it get, and will the steering rack ultimately fail. The vehicle did not illuminate any warning lamps and is available for inspection upon request.
When I drove the vehicle at Highway Speed 60-70 around a curve stretch, the steering appeared to be restricted like as if the road assistance is kicking in but I was not crossing another lane. It is pretty consistent. I sort of disregard it but I started to noticed recently online a lot of similar complaints. So I took it in to the dealer 2/26/24 they ordered a part #53620-3D5-A14. The dealer couldn't give me a timeline when the part will be in and fixed. My daughter normally drives the vehicle and she have said it's been ongoing for a while.
Driving around corners and steering will not return back to center……will stay in turning position and must force the steering wheel back to center …..as to unstick it. The Sticky steering can be felt and even heard when reversing and turning to maneuver in place to park. The problem was confirmed by Honda dealer of Port Charlotte , Florida where a steering rack has been ordered. BACKORDERED UNTIL April or May. No warning lights or messages of any kind.
Purchased my car in July new. In August I got a CBMS warning for emergency brake system failure. Took it in and they said the front camera failed and needed to be replaced. It’s been on backorder since August 23. Because of this all the safety features including lane assist had to be turned off because the steering wheel would randomly jerk even when I was within the lane lines. Turned off the safety features and around 10,000 miles the steering wheel started clicking and aggressively jerking to the right or left while driving similarly to how it jerked when the safety features were on, even though they were already turned off from the previous steering wheel issues. Brought it to the dealership and they said the EPS rack failed and the care was unfit to drive. They put me in a rental since two safety issues occurred in the vehicle.
Front wheel left tie rod had loose bolt. Around 3000 miles with no warning. Could hear clicking sound when breaking and accelerating from a stop. Was inspected and tightened. Steering stick or glitches for first .5 inch or so of turning, especially at high speeds. No warnings. Safety was at risk. Around 4000 miles. Was inspected and waiting for steering rack replacement.
The power steering of the vehicle is malfunctioning while driving on the freeway. The steering feels like it gets “stuck” and doesn’t correct itself. Even if the car goes out of the lane, it maintains its position and doesn’t correct itself. Thus, One has to add force to correct the steering. The dealership has confirmed the issue and has estimated that the parts will arrive by April 2024.
We have reported a “sticky” or “locking” issue with our car since a month after purchase, when the steering wheel is top dead center it forces itself to the left or right, in slight turning motions during vehicle operation it isn’t free flowing and locks up in either direction for a split second causing constant jerking motions trying to keep the car in the lane. We have took the car in but are now told the part is 4 months out, got told to drive vehicle until then. It is a HUGE safety concern that really does need immediate attention. Our local Honda has replaced one part but claims the part we are waiting on is back ordered.
At speeds around and above 60 MPH, my 2023 CRV's steering becomes "hesitant and jerky". This is most noticeable when driving on the highway. As highway roads are generally not curvy, I make normal small adjustments while driving to stay centered in my line. Almost continuously, however, when I attempt to make these steering inputs and adjustments, my steering wheel feels "stuck in place" for a up to a second before I finally apply enough force and the steering wheel moves. When it does finally move, the steering wheel's movements are sudden and jerky. It almost feels like my steering wheel is "fighting to stay unmoved" for a split second or so. I have a 2017 Honda Civic and the steering feels normal and smooth on the highway. My assumption is either a hardware or software issue with the electric power steering system.
My steering started to feel stuck at highway and city speeds, causing more force than necessary to keep the car in the lane. This often causes overcorrecting and make the lane departure worse. This put me and others' safety at risk, as overcorrecting and shaky steering could cause accidents, especially at highway speeds. This problem has been reproduced by the dealer, and a new steering rack was ordered. There are several complaints of this same issue on forums and other online places for the CR-V and Civic as well. There was no warning or anything to indicated that this would happen.
The steering after a few miles, feels sticky. The steering wheel will softly jerk on the highway. Almost feels like adjusting for lane departure, but I am not departing the lane. This also causes lane keeping to feel jerky. Also, the android auto when plugged in and apps being used will turn off the radio or the sound system. Thank you
Symptom was increased resistance to steering; initially an intermittent symptom that presented itself at various sppeeds and while idling at a traffic light. Reported issue Honda dealers on October 3, 2023; October 4, 2023; and November 27, 2023. On Nov. 27, the Honda dealer advised that a new EPS Gearbox/Rack was on backorder. Later queried the WWW and found NHTSA/ODI Investigation EA23003. The symptoms described in the ODI investigation exactly mirrored my symptoms. Providing my experience to provide additional info to NHTSA database. The dealer is holding the car while parts are on backorder. Current ETA is April 4, 2024.
Since approximately 5K to 10K miles on the car, the steering has been "sticky." I mean the steering seems to have discreet sticky points or detents when trying to turn the steering wheel, as if the steering system is fighting me from turning the wheel. It is like this both when parked and when driving. When parked, there seems to be a noticeable looseness in the steering when turning the steering wheel either direction, and also has these sticky detents when turning the wheel. Same thing when driving at all speeds. It seems to be getting worse. It is so noticeable that I (and any passengers) can hear it when trying to turn the wheel. At some point, I think the car might start getting unsafe to drive like this if it continues to get worse. The car was written up at the purchasing dealer (John Eagle Honda of Dallas TX) around 11K miles and some time around October 2023, but at that time they claimed that they could not reproduce the problem. So I got an oil change that was due and moved on, thinking it might go away on its own. I wrote the car up again at the same dealership on {XXX}, 2024 at 24,656 miles, and this time they were able to reproduce the problem and wrote it up properly. It has now been nearly three months since then, and the part (steering rack assembly and gearbox) has been on backorder with indeterminate ETA. As of this writing, the car has about 32K miles on it, and I continue to have to drive this car with faulty steering. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Tail lights cracked on their own during summer possibly due to high heat index. Adaptive cruise control system has given me an error/failure to start up several times when starting my vehicle.
At speeds above 40 miles on the highway, the steering occasionally feels sticky or resistant, disrupting the smoothness of the drive. The best way I can explain it is this: Imagine you're driving on a straight road at a speed above 40 Miles, gradual turn with the steering wheel turned only slightly. Then, when you need to adjust it a bit more to stay on the road, it feels like there's a momentary increase in resistance, almost as if the steering briefly "sticks" and then returns to its usual firmness. It's as if the steering wheel gets stuck in a groove during the gentle turn, and the resistance doesn't have a smooth feel when you're trying to adjust further into or out of the turn. If I were to make an educated guess, it could be related to one of the safety systems integrated into the steering mechanism. This issue seems to persist even when Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist are turned off.
The information screen, which provides all of the safety backup camera and sensors and entertainment and other adjustments and information won’t turn on. It is very important when backing up. A replacement is not available for months per Honda corporate customer service.
Steering becomes sticky. The steering wheel will feel like it has grooves at point, and you need to exert a bit more strength to turn. Reminds me of old cars with hydraulic power steering, when the power steering was going bad, or was running low on fluid. Noticeable at most speeds. Issue started after I clocked in 2800+ miles on the car. Bought it new in late July 2023.
The steering wheel seems "sticky" as in it feels as though it gets "stuck" in intervals typically after traveling several miles at highway speeds. It requires excess force to adjust and move the steering wheel once it "sticks" and is exceptionally noticeable while driving a straight path and having to adjust the wheel left/right in minor increments to follow the straight path. Occasionally I even overcompensate with force to "unstick" its position and have drifted over the center road line in the process which I instantly thought the first time it happened could prove dangerous if another driver were directly beside me in an adjacent lane. I will be having the vehicle assessed by the dealer in the next couple of days. No warning lamps indicate any problem with steering or steering components. This issue started somewhere around 4-5,000 miles and is progressing with continued vehicle use.
The steering wheel opposes force when trying to steer it when going at slow, medium or high speed, it's important to mention that this problem exists either the lane keeping assistance is on or off. You have to be a very experienced driver to use this vehicle, otherwise it could be really dangerous. I've read in various forums of other people complaining about the same issue. The vehicle did not advise about any issue.
Lane departure correction will occur when you are no where near the line; this has resulted in over correcting steering by the car and has almost caused wrecks.
Car has almost 13,000 miles. Recently the steering has started sticking to where it feels as if the wheel is briefly stuck while driving and won’t turn. When it breaks free you can almost over correct and swerve a little.
Easiest way to explain it is the steering wheel gets stuck while driving. This is result in a car accident that seriously hurts others or myself because my steering wheel locked up or got stuck. This issue started back in September 2023 after I had my car serviced and there was a recall on the system that need some update. My husband drove the car and immediately noticed what I had been feeling and I took my car in 1-18-2024 due to this recurrent issue. Dealership confirmed that my suv will need the steering wheel rack replaced was told the car shouldn’t be driven due to safety reasons caused by this faulty part. Dealer confirmed on 1-18-2024 that the part needs to be replaced however the part is on back order and no date for arrive has been set. My car has been sitting in my garage for 3 months now due to this safety issue which in fact there should be a recall linked to my vin #.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that after he parked and turned off the vehicle, he pressed the button to the electronic parking brake, but the parking brake failed to engage. A message was displayed on the instrument panel to “Take the vehicle to the dealer”. A dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,700.
Sticky steering causing resistance when straightening the wheel from a slight turn. I live in the North GA mountains and my daily travel consists of many curves. When slightly turning the wheel left or right, then when trying to straighten the wheel back into place it feels as though the wheel catches/sticks. The resistance when trying to straighten the wheel causes me to apply more pressure and force when straightening the wheel back into place. I feel as though this could cause an accident and it scary. It’s been doing it daily on every drive over the last month. Purchased the car in June 2023. My husband which is a police officer has driven the car as well and has also noticed the issue and he believes it has gotten worse. Please help!
When the car is been driving over 55 miles the steering wheel feels like sticky and stock. Most of the problem can be feel it on the highway. Is hard to drive like this because you have to put a lot of effort to drive in a straight lane. I took it to my local dealer and they said is normal but I know is not normal because this start after the 6,000 miles before that it was normal. Im scared if something happens while im driving with my family.
While driving on the interstate I started experiencing a sensation that the lane departure/lane assist was attempting to veer me off the road to the left. After turning off all assist features the car continued to steer me off the road. While traveling in particular at higher speeds, on the interstate, it proceeded to get worse. Before traveling for 10 hour drive I took my car in for an oil change and turn off all of the features, November 21, 2023. I described my issue and was informed that it was an issue with the steering rack not the features. My car has been at the dealership since that day. No updates from Honda.
Yesterday, temporarily, the car would not move when placed in gear. It was parked in our car port. Everything seemed to be normal until the car was placed in reverse (R). Pressure on the gas pedal produced no response. Putting the car in drive (D) also produced no response. All the settings seemed normal, no brake lock engaged etc. Powering the car off and then back on did not improve the situation until about the third attempt, when spontaneously the car resumed normal functions. The safety risk is that there are times when in an emergency, one must reverse the car out of an intersection to avoid a collision, or otherwise move backward, for example to allow an emergency vehicle to cross lanes. If the car suddenly becomes immobile, there are many situations in which this could be dangerous. Just knowing that the transmission is unreliable is a great concern. We are making an appointment with the dealer for a routine oil change, and will report the issue to him at that time. The auto has also had one recall which was attended by the dealer. Also, a similar problem was reported on a website involving a 2021 CRV. See https://www.crvownersclub.com/threads/crv-not-reversing-when-put-into-r.221332/
The driver side mirror vibrates when the car is driven more than 40 MPH which makes difficult to see and drive at night.
Sticky steering constantly , started within the first few weeks after purchasing the vehicle. and also the road departure mitigation system has come on 4 times in 3 months
Our new CRV developed "sticky" steering within months of being new. Periodically, the steering wheel will momentarily catch when making minor steering adjustments, requiring additional force to make the wheel respond. In heavy traffic, especially at highway speeds, this creates a dangerous situation, preventing subtle steering changes and often causing oversteering when exerting the extra force. The issue was diagnosed by the dealership, Honda of Cleveland, TN, in mid November and a new steering rack was ordered. However, the replacement part is currently not available until September '24. The dealership says that the vehicle is safe to drive so no other solution has been offered. The problem continues to worsen, but the vehicle is the only source of transportation for my wife to commute to work and for our entire family to travel on extended trips, so we have no option but to drive it.
Steering wheel issue: I had a similar issue with my old 22 Civic. Now it's a known and common problem, it's hard to make small adjustments. It may not be related to the speed or the use of LKAS. There is no warning on the dashboard. Brake pedal: Randomly I feel friction on the pedal when I press it. Like the steering wheel issue it starts to happen and disappears. No warning messages. LKAS giving false warnings, especially when going backwards.
The vehicle starts to shift me off of the road as steering wheel gets “stuck”while driving on the interstate. Lane assist and any/all safety features were not enabled. Took my car to the Honda dealership on November 21. I was informed it is “sticky steering” and the part is on backorder indefinitely.
Steering wheel sticks when trying to make minor steering corrections at a speed over 40.. Since this is built on a Civic frame it is suffering from the same problem as on the Civic Steering Recall
Driver Side mirror vibration. From Day 1 of the vehicle purchase i am seeing that the driver side mirror vibrates at higher speeds and on rough roads causing a distorted view. This is very risky to driver and unable to clearly gauge the distance of the car behind me because of the vibration. Have contact Honda and the dealership many times without any permanent resolution to this issue. Dealership has replaced the Driver side mirror twice and the issue still persists. Honda doesn't have any resolution yet. Its very risky to drive the car with this issue.
