NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda HR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I received several recall notices for the fuel pump impeller. I understand that there are no parts available to fix the vehicles’s faulty issue. However, all notices indicate a safety risk of crash or injury. I just received another notice and I can see that this recall was first reported in December of 2023. I feel that I am at risk, based on the information provided on the recall notices. Is there a limitation on the amount of time that it takes The dealership to make the necessary repairs? One year seems excessive, when a safety issue has been identified.
I have had an issue with my 2019 Honda HRV Sport. Black display on the odometer/fuel/oil gauge at start up, then went to gibberish then to display as normal once the car warmed up. Sometimes it would flash or not come back at all. I live in the Northeast and it started when temperatures started getting cooler. This is the first year. Dealer (Keeler Honda) says they have heard of this and wanted to charge me $1800 to replace it. They said they’ve heard of it happening in the HRV and the Fit. It’s dangerous when you can’t see how much gas you have. Also wondering if accurate mileage is being calculated.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
I was told about a recall on my car back in May. I was told the part would be available in the Fall. I just called and the fuel pump part is still not available with no date in sight. My car is definitely feeling the affects. Not sure why this part is taking forever to come in. Recalls are serious.
Electrical component that controls that stereo and dashboard are going out, almost $2000 to replace this. It controls what indicates the quantity of gas and any safety related information, such as the check engine light, to me as the driver. Without this, I could put people at risk by completely losing gas, since I can’t even track my milage either, as well as possibly causing a safety risk to myself and my family if the car has any safety issues going on, as I wouldn’t know until I took it to the shop.

The Honda Sensing camera in my Honda 2019 HRV malfunctioned while driving and no longer gives me the safety features of Honda Sensing. The camera does not hold a long life span it seems and Honda is not willing to help with the replacement. I think it is unfair and unsafe to allow customers to operate and use a car where the safety features will just out of nowhere disengage risking my life and my families life. The vehicle was brought into the dealership and the cost for replacement is incredibly large.
Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, collision avoidance, regular cruise control, and more all shut down after my cars Honda sense camra died.
Vehicle fuel gauge intermittently operates to the point where the fuel gauge goes completely blank, the issue worsens with the onset of cold weather. Dealer will not repair as a defect and estimated a 1500.00 repair price. This condition can become especially dangerous when operator unable to ascertain fuel level, especially on high speed roadways where vehicle can become disabled due to low fuel levels and vulnerable to being struck by other vehicles. A web based search reveals this is a common customer complaint for this vehicle.
Faulty front camera sensor resulted in all ADAS systems to not work. (Auto braking, auto high beams, lane keeping, adaptive cruise control). Forums have shown that this is an issue across platforms of the HRV, and happens at different mileage of vehicle. Mine happened at around 70k miles. Repair is $1800-$2500.

The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that after the initial startup, the vehicle would hesitate before driving, and when accelerating at various speeds the vehicle would display the same hesitation before accelerating. No warning lights illuminated. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not available in their district as a whole due to the manufacturer not providing any. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 42,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

Gas gauge and mileage odometer lighted area blink Amon and off and sometimes go out completely for any length of time. Seems more so in colder temperatures

Speedometer, fuel gauge, mileages, Temperature, not showing up on the dashboard! It’s dark when the car it start up! Just dark screen on the odometer side. It’s start blinkering when you drive for while. It’s happened to the las 3 years and getting worse this year. It’s happened every morning and fewer times in the evening.
Driving and car suddenly will stop completely then accelerate. Has happened many times. Most recently last Sunday while passing a slowing car that was making a right hand turn into a driveway.

The contact used tape to secure the sunroof on both sides and continued normal driving without further issues. The vehicle was eventually taken to a dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty and the contact was given an estimate for the replacement of the sunroof glass. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
HISTORY: Honda service bulletin 21-025 // NHTSA recall 21V-215 // Safety Recall received May 2021. Fuel pump was replaced June 2021 at Beaverton Honda. EVENT: [XXX]; HR-V, without warning stopped while traveling [XXX] (mp 55), southbound in passing lane. Resulted in full stop in fast lane. Required transport "tow" to Medford, OR. Honda dealer. Cost us lodging and meals for a week while waiting warranty repair. FUEL PUMP WAS FAULTY and WAS REPLACED again! Had to rent a car to return home. Now arranging Auto Transport to return Honda HR-V home in Beaverton, OR. VERY, VERY dangerous for disabled American Vietnam veteran and his wife! Took many hours for screaming, cussing, crying, and PTSD to abate. And then there was the wifey's reaction.......... INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Car doesn’t seem to accelerate normally or seems to lack proper acceleration. Also the brakes feel funny when braking.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the instrument panel was flashing on and off and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
8/9/24 was the first time we noticed the gas/mileage gauge disappearing. It would do this almost everyday for no apparent reason leaving the driver (usually my teenage daughters) not knowing how much gas they had left. This particular disappearance happens on a regular basis which is quite concerning not knowing how much gas you have left. Also on 8/23/24 a light came on that said check fuel cap along with the yellow check engine light, yellow parking brake and flashing park symbol. These lights stayed on minus the fuel cap light for about 3 weeks. They have disappeared with now with only the issue of the disappearing fuel/mileage gauge remaining an off/on issue (but as stated above usually on a daily basis.) We replaced the fuels cap in case there was an issue and also took it to a Honda dealership on 9/27/24. They didn't check diagnostics as the other icons had turned off, but the gas gauge was still missing. They said it wouldn't show codes since the icons were missing. I also called the Honda corporation regarding this safety issue as there are multiple reports of this happening to others on several Honda forums with Honda HRV ranging from 2016-2020. It usually happens in this manner with the fuel gauge disappearing first then other icons coming off/on.
after driving for about an hour, then making a brief (10min) stop at the store, car would crank but not start. After allowing car to cool for ~2 hours, car started fine. Seems to be a fuel pump issue. concerned with future loss of power. car is 5 years old with ~50k miles
The car does not have pickup when attempting to accelerate. Driver must drop the gear down to try and force acceleration. Vehicle was taken to dealership and dealer wanted to charge to diagnose the problem. When it was stated that symptoms mimic those outlined in recall, dealer stated they still need to diagnose to see if the repair is needed. After checking dealer claims debris was blocking the pedal and the problem is not related to recall. However, the pedal was clear of any debris and still drives with loss of power when trying to accelerate.
Vehicle gives false brake alert with no obstacle ahead causing car to suddenly brake. This happens multiple times and regularly.
I bought my car brand new off the lot in March 2021, it is a 2021 Honda HRV sport all wheel drive. I've been noticing over the past year that the lever to my seat has been changing the amount of times you need to pump it and the height at which it goes. When I first got the car I want to say that it pumped around 5 to 8 times, now I must use the lever anywhere from 10 to 31 times, and it is always different. The fact that the car no longer holds its position has led me to need to buy a cushion to sit on to see over the steering wheel. This is a huge safety concern because I would have never bought a car that I cannot see over the steering wheel too and nor would I have bought it brand new off the lot. There's also leads to issues where I am constantly needing to adjust my mirrors, adjust my seatbelt, and adjust my steering wheel as well as adjust my distance from the steering wheel. This is wreaking havoc on my mirrors motor and is causing me to break rapidly or not be able to reach the gas pedal if I don't notice that the seat has sunk. When the sea sinks on its own, I am unable to pump it up any higher because it thinks it's at the max amount. I am done forced to get out of the car pump it all the way to the bottom and then pump it all the way to the top. Every time it is a different amount of pumps on the seat lever. This is a huge safety risk while I'm driving. I've also noticed that the seat looks to be leaning while it's on its rails, and the section that sits in the rails while it is at the highest point, don't even look secure I will attach pictures. I weigh 90lbs so I know I have not crushed the cushioning in the seat.

My car is flood. I was told that a filter became clogged and was causing flooding in the car. Honda said that they cannot cover the repairs dispute me paying for full services. This issue wasn’t caused by any external factors and they agreed with. I have seen that many other ppl have complained about the same thing
Around July 2024 my 2019 HRV began displaying warnings regarding the Honda sensing camera and the features associated with it. After spending my own time and money diagnosing the issue, the dealership explained the Honda sensing camera is malfunctioning. Without any further explanation they expected me to pay almost $2,000 to fix it. Now my car will not pass inspection unless I pay out of pocket to fix the malfunctioning camera despite the lack of reasoning. This feature should be removed from Honda vehicles if it is going to malfunction for no reason.
Odometer/fuel gauge goes black and shows nothing on it. Has caused risk because I can not see how much gas I have and have to wait till the gas light turns on. It does it when it gets below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. I am unable to see my mileage, the temperature, level of gas I have, the time, etc. It will go back on when it is warmer out but will not when it gets cooler.
The gauge cluster display will go in and out. There is apparently a faulty solder joint that gets affected in cold weather and until the car is warmed up the gauge cluster stays blank. I was informed that I need a new one at the cost of $1800+ for a 2019 HRV with 24000 miles. It seems very wrong that this part has failed.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that the SRS sensor warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle was taken to a local dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that the SRS sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. The contact also mentioned that the Lane Departure Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking System, and Rollover Protection System warning lights were illuminated; however, the contact had been advised that the warning lights was most likely been triggered due to the SRS sensor failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,829.
Dash guage cluster randomly stops working or appears as scrabble. Includes fuel level, odometer, Trip meter, and all extraneous vehicle info. Could result in running out of gas at speed since no info is available. This is very unsafe and I am traveling to Florida as I type this.
The road assist / warning systems on dashboard malfunctioned, suddenly turning on and off, all at once. This caused A safety risk, by a startling distraction while driving, and worrisome stress while the car was at rest. The the problem was reproduced or confirmed by a dealer service rep who stated the car was unsafe to drive. They witnessed all warning lights, messages flashing on and off. This malfunction occurred, June 19-20, 2024. In retrospect, the break warning light would flash on for no reason and slightly break, or engine would stall or lose velocity while driving. The car is currently being serviced by the dealership. Their assessment is the front camera needs replaced. This car is under the warranty for mileage (not driven much during the pandemic), but due to the year, it is outside of warrenty. Obviously, the cause is not wear and tear, but a faulty camera. This is concerning, given the safety issue , should this be cause for a recall and repairs, including replacement part and services, the responsibility of the Honda company and not the car owner/driver.
I recently had my car repaired for the recall and a brake job (replacing pads and resurfacing rotors). A couple of days later, I was driving on the highway at about 60mph. Suddenly, the check engine light, parking brake light, brake light, and brake system light all went on. Additionally, the car was flashing neutral, drive, and parking gears while I was in park and driving. I started to slow down and realized that as my speed got slower, each new low speed became the highest speed I could go - pressing the gas with my foot did not increase the speed. As such, I drove to a nearby garage where the lights were reset. No mechanical issues were found with the car, nor was there a warning. I then called the dealership that had performed the service (DCH Paramus Honda in New Jersey) and I was informed that it was unlikely they would be able to diagnose any issues as the lights had been reset so the car was driveable. It seemed very dangerous that these issues could happen at any time. The brake system was put in maintenance mode during my brake job, so I suspect this was a computer issue rather than a mechanical problem.
On random occasions (usually in damp or humid weather) the odometer and fuel gauge will black out. This has happened several times. It will revert to normal operation later

When pushing on the gas pedal, the vehicle often pushes forward aggressively and shifts very hard. Other times it does nothing when pushing on the gas and several seconds later there is throttling and intermittent shaking back and forth. It does not happen all the time, but happens quite often. I fear the vehicle could propel forward when I am driving and hit someone or something or it could slow suddenly with lack of gas putting other drivers in harm's way. I know there is a similar recall on fuel pumps with this vehicles and my vehicle is within the years and types so I do not understand why my vehicle has not been recalled. No warning lights come on and I cannot have someone look at it without having to pay a large fee. I had an appointment in the past, but it does not do it al the time and they tell me they can't help me if it doesn't do it all the time. Thank you.

Transmission needs to be replaced, I was driving on the highway then pulled off to exit, when I got to the end of the exit ramp the car crunched and clunked when I tried to step on the gas. I rolled into a parking lot across the street. Had it happened a minute earlier I would have crashed on the highway due to the transmission failure. Honda service says it’s metal shavings in the transmission. It’s related to the recent software issue but because my car is over the extended warranty of 7 years or 150,000 miles they do t want to cover the cost, or help me with getting into a new car. I still owe over $6,000 on it.
Steering. Risk of crashing. Lundgrens Honda of Greenfield, MA. Lundgrens diagnosed and replaced. Steering started creaking in May 2024 slowly got worse to a popping. Took to Lundgrens, they diagnosed and replaced. $1925.44. Diagnosed steering gear assembly worn out at coupler connecting to inner shaft and steering gear box replaced.
A dash light indicator came on in my car. The image was not in any of the materials that came with the car. At that time the LCD information on the dash flickered and went out. I cannot see how much gas I have, when I need an oil change, odometers etc. I also seem to have decreased power when I attempt to accelerate . I am also aware of 2 recalls that came out in 2021 and 2023. I had the code read and it indicated an "Evaporative System Leak Detection". As of 5/14/2024 I had 15,828 miles on the car, in about 5 years so it should not be failing. I recently got a new job and am required to commute 50 miles each way. I am so terrified because I have tried the 2 nearest dealers in my area (Union Park Honda in Wilm. DE and Honda of Springfield PA). I have received zero consideration. I have had my car scheduled to go in and I HAVE to call them as I need a loaner. I NEVER move up on the list and then I am treated like I did not show up (I call the day before). When I was young I had anxiety and could not drive. I worked and pushed myself to be able to drive again and I have been for years. These issues are starting to make me more fearful and anxious. I actually asked the CS rep "Jade" where the car was manufactured ( Japan, Korea?) and if I should DRIVE MY CAR TO JAPAN for service. Her exact words were "That is up to you". Unbelievable.
Right directional/turn signal gets stuck on. Returning it to the neutral/central position does not turn the signal off. The only thing that will turn the turn signal off is to power off the vehicle or pull back on the directional lever which engages the high beams. The issue is intermittent.
The digital gauge on this vehicle has intermittent faults. The gauge goes totally blank, sometimes the digits appear scrambled, other times not at all. This gauge includes odometer as well as the fuel gauge, (and other analytical information that is perhaps not as critical). The lack of a reliable working fuel gauge on this vehicle is concerning and may cause driver to unknowingly run out of fuel in places that are totally unsafe - highway, bridge, or some remote location. Another concern is that if the odometer is not working, not accumulating miles, how does a buyer know what she/he is buying? Is the vehicle mileage accurately reflecting the miles on this car? Checking on this on-line I discovered that this is not an isolated problem, and that NHTSA may not be aware of this as car owners may not be reporting this as a safety issue. I also discovered that some Honda dealers have addressed this problem, while others push-back on this and want owners to pay for this repair. I purchased my vehicle three months ago, from a private owner. I was not informed of this problem at time of purchase. I did bring this to Honda's attention and was told to bring it in for service, at my own expense.
