TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THOUGHT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK AS THE KEY WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WAS ACTUALLY IN DRIVE WHEN THE KEY WAS TAKEN OUT AND ROLLED 600 FEET INTO A NEIGHBOR'S YARD CAUSING MAJOR DAMAGE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 165,000. UPDATED 01/12/11*LJ THE DEALER REPLACED THE LOCK CYLINDER WHICH FAILED. THE CONSUMER STATED OTHER MODELS THAT WERE RECALLED HAD THE SAME IGNITION LOCK AS HER VEHICLE. UPDATED 04/15/11
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN, TRANSMISSION DOWN SHIFTED AT 72M.P.H. ON INTERSTATE .WENT TO TWO HONDA DEALERS 1ST. DEALER SAID TRANS. GONE REPLACE FOR $4,000 DEALER WHERE PURCHASED SAID TRANS. GONE WILL REPLACE FOR $6,000 CALLED HONDA CORP. THEY SAID TO BAD. BOUGHT VAN NEW SERVICED AT DEALERS 112,000 MILES. HONDA HAS BUILT A BAD PRODUCT AND WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT ! *TR
TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AT 67,000 MILES AND AGAIN AT 99,500 MILES ON MY HONDA ODYSSEY. MY FIRST REPLACEMENT WAS COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT THE SECOND WAS OUT OF MY POCKET BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT THE FIRST TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT HAD A 2 YEAR OR 20K MILE WARRANTY. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANY WAY TO GET COMPENSATED FOR THE SECOND REPLACEMENT. WHY ISN'T THERE A BETTER SOLUTION? I WOULD THINK ANY REPLACEMENT SHOULD HAVE A LONGER WARRANTY, AND A BETTER, LONG LASTING PART. THE ODYSSEY WAS PURCHASED USED BY CARMAX, WITH NO MENTION OF ANY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS, AND MECHANICS HAVE NEVER MENTIONED THIS WAS A BIGGER ISSUE UNTIL MY SECOND REPLACEMENT. ODYSSEYS BETWEEN 1999 AND 2004 HAVE A KNOWN TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, BUT IT SEEMS THAT SINCE THE RECALL, THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING TO REMEDY THIS PROBLEM FOR CURRENT OWNERS. THIS SEEMS SERIOUS AND COULD POTENTIALLY BE CAUSING INJURIES OR FATALITIES, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS SPECIFICALLY PURCHASED BY FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN. *TR
FAULTY SHIFTING BY HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION. RANDOM SHIFTING, MISSED SHIFTING LEADING TO NEAR RED-LINE ENGINE TACHOMETER READINGS. *TR
03 HONDA ODYSSEY WHILE TRAVELING AT 50 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION WENT INTO LOWER GEAR AND BACK. THEN CONTINUED TO DROP DOWN A GEAR OR 2 AND GO BACK UP. I STOPPED THE CAR AND STARTED UP AGAIN, IT CONTINUED, THEN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT. I WAS ABOUT 5 MILES FROM A HONDA DEALER AND DECIDED I BETTER DRIVE THERE. ON THE WAY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON PLUS ALL THE OTHER LIGHTS, IT WOULDN'T SHIFT AND I COULDN'T GO OVER 20 MPH. I WAS ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY TO GET TO THE HONDA DEALER. MY CHILDREN WERE TERRIFIED AND UPSET. THE TRANSMISSION WAS ORIGINALLY RECALLED, I HAD THE RECALL FIX AND IT STILL FAILED. I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THIS TRANSMISSION AND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. PLEASE CHECK INTO THIS TO PREVENT ANY DEATHS. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING DURING RUSH HOUR ON A MAJOR ROAD WHOEVER WAS BEHIND ME WOULD HAVE SLAMMED INTO ME. *TR
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY VAN (85K) SHUDDERS WHEN ACCELERATING AT ABOUT 22 MPH, PARTICULARLY UPHILL. I HAVE TAKEN IT IN TWICE FOR THIS, TO THE DEALER, WHO SAYS THEY CAN FIND NO CAUSE. WHILE I WAS PICKING MY VAN UP TODAY FROM BEING SERVICED AND TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE I OVERHEARD ANOTHER CUSTOMER TALKING ABOUT HIS VAN SHUDDERING. HIS IS A 2004 AND IT HAPPENS AT 45 MPH. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD 3 VANS IN TODAY, ALL WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. NO PROBLEMS FOUND, BUT IF I WANTED TO TAKE A TECHNICIAN WITH ME AND REPLICATE IT I COULD GIVE THEM A CALL. *TR

I HAVE A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WITH A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM . SEEMS IT SLIPS OUT OF SECOND GEAR A KNOWN PROBLEM IN HONDA ODYSSEYS FROM 1999 TO 2004. HONDA ISSUED A RECALL FOR A TEMPORARY FIX TO GET THE CARS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE SALES MANAGER AT HONDA IN GURNEE ILLINOIS CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM IN HONDA ODYSSEY AND HONDA IS BURYING THEIR HEAD IN THE SAND. MY CAR NOW NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION ESTIMATE COST 3800. I CALLED HONDA AND THEY DENIED ANY RECOVERY OF THIS COST. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND THIS PROBLEM IS HUGE IN THESE VANS. I KNOW 3 PEOPLE WITH HONDA ODYSSEY WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
WITH NO WARNING OR INDICATION, OUR 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, WITH 111K MILES, SHIFTED ITSELF FROM D TO SECOND OR FIRST GEAR AT 70 MPH. THE LEVER AND INDICATOR STAYED IN D THE WHOLE TIME AND NO WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO OR FOLLOWING THE EVENT. IT WAS VIOLENT, LIKE SLAMMING THE BRAKES, BUT OF COURSE WITH ONLY THE FRONT WHEELS DIGGING IN CREATING A DIFFICULT CONTROL SITUATION. HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE LUCK OF A DRY AND STRAIGHT THREE LANE HIGHWAY WITH NO CLOSELY FOLLOWING TRAFFIC, WITH SHARP SKILLS AT THE WHEEL NECESSARY, IT WOULD HAVE WRECKED US WITH POTENTIALLY SEVERE INJURIES. WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE VAN AT HIGHWAY SPEED SINCE THAT DAY AND OBVIOUSLY CANNOT. WE RESEARCHED THE SOLUTIONS AND PATHS THAT 1,000'S OF OTHER OWNERS HAVE TAKEN FOLLOWING REPORTING LIFE THREATENING AND OTHER ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION SAFETY ISSUES. MOST OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED REPEAT FAILURES MAKING THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE AT HIGHWAY SPEED EVEN FOLLOWING CURRENT REPAIR SOLUTIONS. I PLEAD WITH YOU TO TAKE SWIFT ACTION SO THAT MY VOICE MAY SPEAK FOR THE DEAD AND INJURED THAT DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THEIR ODYSSEY OR THE ODYSSEY IN FRONT OF THEM WENT OUT OF CONTROL. *TR
2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED (SLIPPING BETWEEN THE GEARS) AT 113,000 MILES. HAVE VISITED HONDA DEALER WHERE WE BOUGHT THE CAR, WE HAVE BEEN TOLD WE NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION (TRANSMISSION IS DEAD BASICALLY). A RE-BUILT ONE WOULD COST ~$4500 - $5000. WITH ALL THE MAJOR SERVICES HAVE BEEN DONE AT DEALER SERVICE CENTER, THE TRANSMISSION IS DEAD TOO PREMATURELY. HONDA NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COST. THE RECALL OF 2004 DIDN'T FULLY ADDRESS THE TRANSMISSION ISSUE WHICH MAKES THE TRANSMISSION FAILED WAY TOO EARLY. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY COULD BE REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION WITHOUT THE VEHICLE BEING IN THE PARK POSITION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN NEUTRAL, REVERSE, AND DRIVE THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REMOVED THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. THE MANUFACTURER ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH FOR THE ACCORD AND CIVIC MANUFACTURED IN 2003 AND DID NOT INCLUDE THE ODYSSEY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE HAD THE SAME COLUMN AS THE OTHER MODELS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
DRIVING 55 MPH WEST ON HWY 30 OHIO HEARD AND LOUD NOISE, VEHICLE LOCKED UP SKIDDED 50 FT . COULD NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE, CALLED 911 A POLICE OFFICER, 2 SEMI DRIVERS COULD NOT MOVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD. VEHICLE STARTED BUT COULD NOT TURN WHEELS WOULD NOT TURN. A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS THE VAN WAS BLOCKING THE RIGHT LANE N A BUSY HIGHWAY. TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED. *TR
MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY STARTED EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS IN AUGUST 2010 AT AROUND 62,000 MILES. MOST OF THE PROBLEMS WERE OBSERVED WHEN SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABILITY IN SHIFTING, IT CREATES A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC. *TR

THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 116,000.

2003 ODYSSEY, PURCHASED NEW, I AM ORIGINAL OWNER, AT 60,000 MILES TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP, TCS LIGHT CAME ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE REVVED VERY HIGH AT LOW SPEEDS, CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO REVERSE, ERRATIC AND ABRUPT GEAR SHIFTS. I AM BEING TOLD CAR NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION BETWEEN $3500 AND $3700. I NOTICE ON HONDA'S WEBSITE THERE WAS A RECALL IN 2004 BUT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED. PLEASE HELP. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE DRIVING THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSIS LOCATED THE FAILURE AS THE SEAT BELT SENSOR WHICH CAUSED THE AIR BAG LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR, BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WASN'T REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 77,000. UPDATED 12/21/10*BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE DRIVE LIGHT WAS FLASHING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOORS DO NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY. THE PASSENGER SIDE POWER SLIDING DOOR CLOSES BUT NOT QUITE ALL THE WAY, IT WILL NOT "ENGAGE", OR "CATCH". THEREFORE, THE VAN THINKS THE DOOR IS STILL OPEN (OPEN DOOR LIGHT IS ON, BUZZES CONTINUALLY WHEN PUT INTO GEAR, AND INTERIOR LIGHTS STAY ON). HOWEVER, THE POWER SLIDING DOOR INDICATOR LIGHT IS NOT ON, SO THE VAN THINKS THE DOOR IS FINE, BUT STILL OPEN. I HAVE TO GET OUT, WALK AROUND, AND PHYSICALLY BUMP THE REAR OF THE DOOR THE FINAL CENTIMETER OR SO TO GET IT FLUSH. FOR SOME REASON THE BACK LOCK PART ISN'T "CATCHING." THIS OCCURS ALMOST EVERY TIME THE DOOR IS SHUT. THIS IS A DANGER FOR ANY CHILDREN RIDING IN THE CAR IF THE DOOR IS NOT ENGAGED. FUSE #13 HAS BEEN TAKEN OUT SO DOORS WERE RESET AND EVERYTHING CLEANED AND OILED. *TR

I HAVE OWNED MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY FOR 4 YEARS AND NEVER HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM TILL NOW. I HAD JUST GOTTEN OFF THE INTERSTATE AND SUDDENLY MY VAN ACTED LIKE I HAD SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND JERKED ME REALLY HARD. THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME OR COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS WRECK. MY TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD IT TOWED TO HONDA DEALERSHIP. EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A HIGHLY KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP HONDA WOULD DO NOTHING TO HELP WITH THE $3300 I HAD TO PAY FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. I WAS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT AT THE TIME AND JUST SO THANKFUL THAT IT DIDN'T CAUSE A SERIOUS WRECK LIKE IT COULD HAVE. HONDA SHOULD HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS REALLY HURT OR LOOSES A LIFE!! *TR
FAILURE OF 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. AFTER RELATIVELY GOOD PERFORMANCE FROM THIS VEHICLE, THE "CHECK ENGINE" AND "TRANSMISSION" LIGHTS BOTH LIT. THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING, NOT ABLE TO OPERATE DURING ACCELERATION. MORE TROUBLING IS THAT DURING SLOWDOWN ON HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT, CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD FOR ME, MY WIFE AND 3 CHILDREN. THIS TRANSMISSION FAILURE OCCURS EACH AND EVERY TIME WE OPERATE THE VEHICLE -- BOTH DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION. AFTER HAVING THIS CHECKED AT HONDA DEALERSHIP, IT REQUIRED A NEW TRANSMISSION -- NEARLY $4,000. SINCE THIS TIME, I HAVE INVESTIGATED THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER HONDA OWNERS HAVE THE EXACT PROBLEM, IT IS A KNOWN DESIGN PROBLEM BY HONDA, THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL FOR VEHICLES IN 1999-2001 FOR THE SAME PROBLEM BUT THEY HAVE NOT PROVIDED ANY REMEDY FOR OWNERS AFTER 2001 UNLESS IT IS WITHIN FACTORY WARRANTY. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS, IT IS CRIMINAL TO HAVE THIS VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. IT SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR CORRECTION AND REPAIR IMMEDIATELY BY HONDA. *TR

QUICKLY JUST GOOGLE IT AND YOU WILL SEE THAT THOUSANDS ARE HAVING THEIR TRANSMISSIONS FAIL AND NOT JUST THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSIONS BUT ALSO THE REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSIONS THAT HONDA DEALERS USE AS A REPAIR. REVIEW COMMENTS MADE ON THE FORUM AT ODYCLUB.COM AND OTHER WEBSITES SUCH AS AUTOMOBILEMAG.COM. THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC SAFETY ISSUE INVOLVING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS OF HONDA ODYSSEYS. THERE WAS ALREADY A SUCCESSFUL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST HONDA FOR YEARS PRIOR TO MY MODEL AND THERE IS MUCH TALK ONLINE ABOUT PURSUING A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FOR YEARS 2003-2005 AS WELL! IT IS THE JOB OF THE NHTSA TO PROTECT AMERICAN CONSUMERS AND I AM REQUESTING THAT NHTSA PULL THE DATA ON ALL OF THE HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION FAILURES PLUS DO SOME ADDITIONAL RESEARCH ONLINE. I AM CONFIDENT YOU WILL SEE THERE IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE HERE DUE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE. MY FAILURE CAUSED A COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER WHICH COULD HAVE KILLED ME AND MY FAMILY SINCE WE WERE TURNING OUT INTO A BUSY STREET WHEN IT HAPPENED. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT COULD VERY WELL BE A TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I HAVE MAINTAINED THIS MINI-VAN FAR BETTER THAN WHAT HONDA EVEN RECOMMENDS AND YET THIS STILL HAPPENS TO ME AND THOUSANDS OF OTHER CITIZENS. THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE P0720 IS AN EARLY SIGN OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THE DEALERSHIP IS REPLACING THE SENSOR BUT I AM TOLD IT IS MOST LIKELY THE EARLY SIGNS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE. IF IT ULTIMATELY ENDS UP BEING THE TRANSMISSION IT WILL COST ME OVER $3,500 TO FIX AND THEY REPLACE IT PER HONDA WITH A REMANUFACTURED ONE THAT HAS A VERY HIGH FAILURE RATE AS WELL! MY WIFE AND I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY MINIVAN. IT ONLY HAD 71000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME. THOUGHT WE HAD A GOOD VEHICLE. HONDA'S ARE SUPPOSE TO BE GREAT. TWO WEEKS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VAN THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEARS. WE WOULD BE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND IT WOULD SLIP COMPLETELY OUT OF GEAR AT TIMES AS WELL. THE ENGINE WOULD RACE AND NOT ALLOW YOU TO GO AND THEN JERK VIOLENTLY AS IT ENGAGED INTO GEAR. NOW AT 77000 MILES IT JERKS HORRIBLY AT AROUND 50-55 MPH. TOOK IT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION IS SHOT AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $5200 DOLLARS. I STARTED TO RESEARCH ONLINE AND THERE ARE LITERALLY HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME TRANSMISSION COMPLAINT. HONDA HAS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THEIR TRANSMISSIONS AND THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. THERE ARE WEBSITES DEDICATED TO HONDA ODYSSEY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. HONDA HAS ALREADY ISSUED A RECALL FOR 1999-2001 ODYSSEY VANS, WHY NOT EXTEND IT OUT FOR THE 2002-2004 VANS AS WELL. THEY HAVE THE SAME TRANSMISSION, AND THE SAME TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE A DEVASTATING PROBLEM. MY WIFE USES THIS VAN EVERY DAY TO TRANSPORT OUR TWO YOUNG GIRLS. IF THE TRANSMISSION WERE TO LOCK UP IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION, WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN. WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. TRANSMISSION STARTED FAILING AT 100,000 MILES. WILL NOT SHIFT FROM 2ND TO 3RD. WHILE MAKING A TURN FROM ONE HIGHWAY TO ANOTHER, TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND WOULD NOT MOVE THE CAR FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. WE EVENTUALLY HAD TO STOP THE CAR (ON THE HIGHWAY). AFTER STOPPING, WE WERE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY GET THE TRANSMISSION TO "KICK IN" AND THE CAR STARTED MOVING AGAIN. THE TRANSMISSION CONTINUES TO SLIP FROM SECOND TO THIRD. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. DEALER STATES THAT IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS TRANSMISSION BUT HONDA REFUSES TO FIX. I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AGAIN UNTIL FIXED AS WE WERE ALMOST IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. BY THE WAY, MY VAN HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER FOR 5 MONTHS WAITING FOR A RESOLUTION. *TR
OUR 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY INSPECTED UNDER THE ORIGINAL RECALL IS NOW HAVING MAJOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. HONDA HAS ADVISED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER IS COMING APART AND THEREFORE THE TRANSMISSION, PCM, AND A MOTOR MOUNT NOW NEED TO BE REPLACED AS A RESULT. MY FAMILY RELIES ON THIS VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION, AND I FEEL THAT THE ODYSSEY IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AS THE TRANSMISSION JERKS AND SLIPS AND ACTUALLY GOT STUCK IN GEAR ON THE HIGHWAY THE LAST WEEK. MY ISSUE IS THAT HONDA OFFERED TO PAY $2300.00 OF THE $5300.00 THEY SAY IS NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THAT LEAVES ME TO PAY $3000.00 TO FIX AN UNSAFE, FAULTY PRODUCT THAT COULD FAIL ANY DAY DUE TO MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTS. I HAVE READ ARTICLES ONLINE WHERE THE DEALERSHIP ACTUALLY PAID 75% OF THE REPAIRS TO KEEP THE CUSTOMER HAPPY SINCE THE TRANSMISSION IS DEFECTIVE. IF HONDA SOLD A FAULTY PRODUCT THEY NEED TO REPAIR AND/OR REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE, UNSAFE COMPONENTS THAT MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO CRASH. IN CLOSING, IF HONDA "INSPECTED" THE VEHICLE UNDER RECALL AND IT SUBSEQUENTLY FAILS, THE HONDA NEEDS TO SHOULDER THE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THEIR PRODUCTS SAFE AND PAY FOR A MAJORITY OF THE REPAIRS OR ALL THE REPAIRS. *TR
TORQUE CONVERTER ISSUE - CAR VIBRATES WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS - AND ONLY STOPS WITH RELEASE OF GAS PEDAL. HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS. HONDA REPLACED TRANSMISSION MOUNT AT MY EXPENSE. *TR
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILED IN JUNE 2010 AT 8 YEARS AND 140,000 MILES. TRANSMISSION BECAME DIFFICULT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO SHIFT INTO OR OUT OF 2 AND/OR 3RD GEAR. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO BUCK, VIBRATE AND GRIND. DRIVING BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. WENT ON FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. DEALER REPORTED THAT TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED DUE TO TORQUE CONVERTER. RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION WITH FACTORY-REBUILT TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. SINCE PREVIOUS YEAR MODEL HAD BEEN INCLUDED IN A "QUIET" EXTENDED WARRANTY PERIOD, CUSTOMER ARGUED THAT HONDA SHOUDL COVER THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR COSTS. HONDA EVENTUALLY AGREED TO COVER 40% OF REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT COSTS. *TR
WE SHOULD BE AT KINGS ISLAND RIGHT NOW AS I SPEAK. MY WHOLE FAMILY WAS ON THE WAY THERE WHEN ABOUT 25 MINUTES INTO THE RIDE-OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. A FEW MINUTES LATER-THE TCS LIGHT ON THE DASH CAME ON! ALL OF A SUDDEN THE THING STARTED JERKING LIKE A BULL AND THE RPM'S REVVED UP AND WE LOST POWER & IT KEPT JERKING -SCARED US TO DEATH!! WE WERE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH THE CRUISE ON. WE BOUGHT THIS 2003 HONDA FROM A DEALER WITH 10 MILES ON IT AND IT'S ONLY GOT 91,000 NOW! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HAPPENED. WHAT HAPPENED AND HE BASICALLY SAID TO PULL OVER - CALL A TOW TRUCK AND BRING IT IN SO THEY COULD LOOK AT IT! THAT'S IT! THAT'S ALL HE SAID! NO - LET ME CALL A TOW TRUCK FOR YOU AND BRING YOU A RENTAL-NOTHING! WE COULDN'T DO THAT-6 OF US CAN'T FIT IN A TOW TRUCK! ANYWAY, WE STARTED TO HEAD BACK ONLY DOING ABOUT 50 CUZ OF THE RPM'S-WE HAD THE FLASHERS ON AND MADE IT DOWN THE ROAD TO THE NEXT EXIT AND MY HUSBAND BOUGHT SOME TRANSMISSION FLUID. WE THEN EVER SO CAREFULLY MADE IT BACK HOME WHERE IT NOW SITS IN OUR DRIVEWAY-I AM VERY SAD CUZ IT WAS MY BABY AND NOW WE HAVE A MAJOR DILEMMA. I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY 65 MPH ON EXPRESSWAY AND VAN STARTED SMOKING FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR. I QUICKLY PULLED OVER AND THE SMOKE INCREASED. WE THOUGHT THE VAN WAS ON FIRE! I EMPTIED MY CHILDREN FROM THE CAR ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (EXTREMELY UNSAFE!) THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE CAME. FLUID PUDDLE WAS UNDER CAR AND FLUID WAS ALL OVER UNDER THE HOOD AND UNDER THE CAR. SAID TO BE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. ALL MY FLUID LEVELS WERE FULL ACCORDING TO DIP STICKS. I HAD TO WAIT (ALONE WITH MY KIDS) ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF (90 DEGREE, HUMID DAY, WITH NO WATER) TO BE PICKED UP BY AAA AND TOWED HOME (80 MILES) MY GAUGES GAVE ME NO WARNING. MY CAR IS KEPT IN PERFECT MAINTENANCE CONDITION. I HAD THE TRANS REPLACED IN RECALL WITH A REBUILT FROM HONDA A FEW YEARS BACK. THIS WAS A SCARY AND DANGEROUS EVENT FOR US AND I AM VERY SAD TO HEAR THAT HONDA WILL DO NOTHING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR ME. I AM NOW IN FEAR WHENEVER I AM IN MY VAN THAT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR

WE HAVE HAD ALL REGULAR AND ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE FOR THIS VEHICLE THROUGH THE YEARS, AND HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED TWICE ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE. WE RESEARCHED THIS ON OUR OWN AND SEE THAT MANY HONDA ODYSSEY VEHICLES HAVE HAD TRANSMISSION FAILURES PRIOR TO 100,000 MILES. WE WONDER WHY THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALL TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. THERE WAS A 2004 RECALL FOR THE TRANSMISSION, FOR WHICH WE PROMPTLY HAD OUR VAN SERVICED. THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE MANAGER ASSURES US THAT THE 2004 RECALL 'HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR CURRENT TRANSMISSION FAILURE.' *TR

REPLACING IT WILL BE OVER $3K. I CALL HONDA AMERICA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE IT'S OVER THE WARRANTY LIMIT. MY IS NOW NOT DRIVABLE BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION IS OUT. I DID NOT TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME IT WILL COST $90 JUST FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT. SO I TOOK IT TO AAMCO TRANSMISSION THEY ONLY CHARGE $59 TO LOOK AT IT. THE CAR HAS PAINT RECALL AND TRANSMISSION RECALL WHICH HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE. THEY REPAINTED THE UPPER HALF OF THE CAR AND REPLACED A TRANSMISSION COOLER ON THE CAR. NOW THEY TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THEY ALREADY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION COOLER, THEY ARE NOT GOING DO ANYMORE REPAIR TO THE TRANSMISSION SO NOW I'M OUT OF LUCK. CAN ANYONE HELP ME? 2003 HONDA ODYSSEY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS (TODAY, MAY 10, 2010, WAS THE LATEST INCIDENT) INCLUDING WHILE DRIVING AND WHILE STARTING OUT. GEARS DISENGAGE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY LOSE ABILITY TO POWER DRIVE WHEELS. VEHICLE SOMETIMES DOES NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR (FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE). THIS CAN LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT IF VEHICLE IS TRYING TO MERGE WITH TRAFFIC, AND TRANSMISSION GEARS DISENGAGE. MY VEHICLE WAS RECALLED IN 2004 FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION 2ND GEAR RECALL. INSTALLATION OF TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER WAS CONDUCTED AS VEHICLE ONLY HAD 14,418 MILES. IF IT HAD 15,000 MILES, TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THIS OIL COOLER DEVICE APPEARS TO BE NOT VERY EFFECTIVE, AND I BELIEVE HONDA KNEW THERE WOULD BE LONG TERM DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION DUE TO THEIR ORIGINAL POOR DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING ERRORS. JUDGING BY COMPLAINTS ON INTERNET BLOGS, THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM, SIMILAR TO THE TOYOTA ACCELERATION PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HONDA INITIATE A RECALL WITH A TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT PROGRAM TO ADDRESS THEIR QUALITY ISSUES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN SO THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT HIS EXPENSE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO ADVISED HIM TO SEND IN ALL HIS MAINTENANCE RECORDS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 103,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 105,000.

ON SATURDAY, APRIL 24TH, STARTING THE VAN, A STRANGE WHINING SOUND WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT THAT CHANGED PITCH WITH ENGINE REVS. SUNDAY APRIL 25TH, AT ~88,300 MILES, VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE HALFWAY ONTO THE HIGHWAY ON-RAMP. ENGINE JUST REVVED BUT TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT TAKE. BOTH TCS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I BARELY MADE IT AND ALMOST HAD A COUPLE OF ACCIDENTS SINCE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE UP ANY OF THE HILLS AND ROLLED BACKWARDS A FEW TIMES. DEALERSHIP SAID THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE CHANGED OUT AT A COST OF $3500 (HONDA WOULD PROVIDE A MEASLY 10% ASSISTANCE) WHICH WE CANNOT AFFORD IN THIS ECONOMY WHICH NOW MAKES THIS VAN WORTHLESS. LOOKING AT ALL THE COMPLAINTS HERE AND ON THE WEB, THIS SEEMS TO BE A SERIOUS PROBLEM HONDA IS TURNING A BLIND EYE TO. THE NHTSA NEEDS TO BE PRO-ACTIVE BEFORE SOMEONE REALLY GETS HURT IN AN ACCIDENT. THESE TRANSMISSIONS HAVE SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW TO FAIL AT THIS MILEAGE AND WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE. *TR
