NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Honda Odyssey. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My vehicle stalls when I turn left or right from a stop light or sign. It’s incredibly dangerous especially when I have my kids in the van with me. We’ve taken it to the Honda dealer for repair and they’ve done work but the issue has not been resolved. I’ve seen countless forums of people with this year make and model who have had the same issue. I don’t know why there’s been no recall but someone is going to get seriously hurt if this issue is not resolved.
The Infotainment Display has been malfunctioning. The display goes black and the back-up camera is not available. On the night of December 12, 2025, we were driving the car on the highway and the screen flickered in and out and then went black and so did the dashboard display. This was very scary as the entire car went dark and we were driving blindly on the highway. It appears that all 2018 Honda Odysseys have a recall for the Infotainment electrical system except for the Elite model that we purchased. I called the dealer last week and was told no recall available and we will need to pay the $179 diagnostic fee plus the cost to repair which will be significant. We will take the car in this week as the car cannot be driven safely without full dashboard and backup camera display.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving 60-62 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the front of the vehicle, and the vehicle lost drive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to Tire Choice Auto Service Centers, where it was diagnosed and determined that one of the engine banks had failed. The mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced with a used or brand-new engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that he would receive a call back later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a case would be filed, and the contact would receive a call back later. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.
My vehicle repeatedly and unexpectedly shifts into neutral while in Drive, causing a sudden loss of power in traffic. This has happened multiple times without any input from me and has nearly caused a crash.
Vehicle: 2018 Honda Odyssey Component: Suspension – Rear Shock Absorbers Mileage at Failure: ~50,000 miles I am submitting this complaint to report a premature and potentially unsafe failure of the rear shock absorbers on my 2018 Honda Odyssey, as well as what appears to be a systemic defect affecting 2018–2024 Honda Odyssey vehicles. At approximately 50,000 miles, the rear shocks on my vehicle failed suddenly. Inspection revealed that the upper portion of the shock absorber housing had rusted completely through the metal, causing the internal hydraulic fluid to leak out and rendering the shock absorber inoperable. This is not surface corrosion—the metal housing itself failed structurally. The affected component is the factory-installed rear shock absorber, Honda part number 52610-THR-A02. Based on owner reports and service findings, this failure appears to be common across 2018–2024 Honda Odyssey models, typically occurring between 50,000 and 80,000 miles, often shortly after the factory warranty expires. Rear shock absorbers are sealed, safety-critical suspension components. They are not expected to rust through the metal housing or leak fluid within 6–7 years of normal use. This type of failure suggests a materials, coating, or design defect, rather than normal wear and tear. Failure of rear shocks can negatively impact vehicle stability, ride control, braking performance, and passenger safety, particularly in emergency maneuvers or adverse road conditions. Given that the Honda Odyssey is marketed as a family vehicle, this raises significant safety concerns. Due to the repeated nature of this failure across multiple model years, I believe this issue warrants investigation by NHTSA for a potential defect trend and consideration of corrective action.
A rattle noise when initially pressing the accelerator pedal. When starting a vehicle, I had to press the start button multiple times. Kept stalling. All the lights on a dashboard started flashing. Saying check engine! We took it to the dealership and they confirmed engine problems. This was their diagnosis: Confirmed concern - found noise coming from engine internally due to CYL NO 2 rod knocking - oil heavily contaminated w/metal particles - recommend engine replacement! Mileage is only 93805.
The Tailgate Control Module failed due to water getting in to it from normal rain. There seems to be a leak in the seam and caused the failure. I took it to the shop and confirmed the failure, purchased a new control module and replaced the faulty one. I opened up the faulty one and it had water damage inside.
Camera projector fail and 6 warning ️ lights came on, very common issue.
My 2018 Odyssey has a problem of High Pressure Fuel Pump malfunction. It is come to know that and it can cause stalling the vehicle while running and can cause accident. The same fuel system is shared by 2018 Honda Pilot which had a recall. But Manufacturer did not issue a recall notice for Odyssey's yet.
Rod bearing knock
The transmission failed at 108k miles. Honda is charging 10000USD for repair. They want to replace the 9 speed transmission. This transmission is notorious for failure and Honda hasn’t issued a recall yet.
The front facing camera has stopped working. Anytime we turn the vehicle on we get multiple warning lights (lane assist, cruise control, bright lights, braking, etc) aren't working.
My computer screen that has my radio and backup camera will black out randomly while I’m driving. There are times I can’t use it for a backup camera because it won’t cut on. I’m not able to control my heat and a/c when it goes blank too.
Was have recall my car fuel pump , I put the car in honda dealership 9am Them I back 3 pm watched my dash cam car park in parking lot no one worked on it them just did paper work When I told the manager the story he told me we did it 4 day ago on 11/07/2025 when you have diagnostic If you did it before why you give me another an appointment and broken my day Then I back home take the seat out See the fuel pump it’s do dirty look no one work on it then the part number in the paper not the one in the pump
The roof leaks in the LH rear of the van under the roof strip thru a bolt or bad seam rfom a bad build causing the Power Unit Liftgate Module PN - 74970-THR-A11 to get wet and sit in water causing a short to the battery, The sliding doors to fail and the rear liftgate to fail which is a safety hazard if someone cannot exit the vehicle in an emergency. It is also a fire potential. This should be a safety recall at Hondas expense. The world wide web is flooded with videos and forums pertaining to this exact issue and Honda has not stepped up to the plate and addressed this issue.
While on a road trip our vehicle began to run louder, same shifting, same gas mileage but louder especially under acceleration. There was no warning and luckily we made it home only to find out it was the High Pressure Fuel Pump in the engine bay that was failing. We had the previous Fuel Pump Recall completed but now at ~82,000 miles the HPFP goes out, these usually last much longer. Took to an independent shop who diagnosed and fixed problem resolved but said we could have easily been stranded or worse the hose with fuel that was violently pulsating in the engine bay could have come unattached and fuel could leak on the hot engine.
The multipurpose camera failed showing lot of error codes. This affects the braking system putting my family and kids in risk. Honda is asking 2000$ to fix the camera.
Multiple warnings on dashboard due to windshield camera malfunction. Many vehicles of the same model have this problem. This is a part defect and should be recalled. Thank you
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. While driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal ticking sound coming from the vehicle. The accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. In addition, the contact became aware that there was smoke coming from the exhaust. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a loose rod bearing. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced or rebuilt. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall with a similar failure; however, the VIN was not associated with the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 172,750.
Suddenly one day in the morning taking my car from my garage, all alarms in my board turned on and stopped working: Automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, forward and collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance and rear cross traffic warning. I bring my car to the McLarty Honda service in Little Rock, AR. After calibration showed that I need a new multipurpose camera code U 3000-49. This is major concern for me. My van is in perfect shape, only 7 years old not so many miles. Doing some research sounds like this is an issue with Honda vehicles. My neighborhood is full of kids ( I have 3 kids too)with these large vehicles you can find a lot of blinds spots and these features help to keep everybody safe. I believe this a safety issue that need to be recalled in Honda's cars.
One light on dashboard lit up, started as "Blind Spot info system problem", light would go on and off for couple of years. Now every light on dashboard lights up, including lane assist, blind spot infor system problem, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control problem, rear cross traffic warning, lane departure warning.
All the systems are not working This is a very low mileage vehicle and has not been involved in any accidents. They are many owners reporting the same issue. This is a safety issue as it shuts off many of the safety features of this vehicle while driving. Honda claims it’s normal.
The media touch screen display periodically goes blank and reboots during driving, which affects the backup camera, defrost control, and every other component controlled on the touchscreen display.
2018 Honda Odyssey (10-speed automatic transmission) What happened: The vehicle is experiencing intermittent loss of reverse and delayed gear engagement from a stop. When shifting into reverse or drive, the engine revs but the vehicle does not immediately move, then jerks into gear. The issue is worse when cold. Warning lights / codes: Check Engine Light on. Honda dealer retrieved diagnostic trouble code P0763 – Shift Solenoid C Electrical. The code returned as a hard code after being cleared. Safety risk: The vehicle hesitates or fails to move when shifting into reverse or from a stop, creating a safety risk in traffic, parking situations, and when backing up. Current status: Diagnosed by Honda dealership. Repair recommended. Honda corporate case opened.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, several unknown warning lights illuminated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the windshield camera sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
FAILED MONOCULAR CAMERA : It is a very common issue across majority of HONDA ODYSSEY. It's the overheating of the camera and start to malfunction, causing all the warning systems lights to illuminate. A lots of people and families who have owned or currently owns HONDA ODYSSEYS minivans have either faced this problem in the past or having it more commonly now. Due to the malfunction caused by the FAILED MONOCULAR CAMERA, it tends to automatically disables the Lane assist function, Engine light comes on, Cruise control get disabled and two other warning comes on the dash. Please note that there are a lots of families who own these HONDA ODYSSEY have been facing this manufacturing fault that HONDA needs to address.
Several of my warning lights came on related to safety features such as brake assist, lane assist, collision mitigation. brake warning. The source has been identified as a failure with the multipurpose camera unit.
Camera that controls ACC LKAS, Lane Departure, collision mitigation system, auto high bean, and braking system alerts kick out intermittently and fail to function while driving.
Summary: Engine seized due to internal bearing failure with metal shavings found in oil filter. Full Description: My 2018 Honda Odyssey experienced a sudden engine failure around 116,500 miles. The dealer confirmed the engine is seized and showed significant metal shavings in the oil filter and pan. I have performed all maintenance according to Honda’s recommended schedule using the correct oil and filters. Honda corporate denied assistance based solely on mileage, even though this issue matches symptoms described in current NHTSA investigation PE25-001 (connecting rod bearing failure in Honda 3.5L V6 engines). There were no prior warnings other than a brief check-engine light and rough running before the engine locked up. The vehicle was in motion at the time and could have caused a hazardous stall, serious injury, or death. Given that Honda has issued recalls for similar rod bearing defects in other model years (2015–2020) and this failure mode presents a clear safety risk (loss of power, engine seizure), I request NHTSA include my case in its investigation and compel Honda to extend recall coverage to 2018 Odyssey owners. I can provide dealer diagnostic reports, photos of the oil filter debris, and all maintenance records if needed.
Recently had the fuel pump recall completed. Within days had intermittent dash emissions light come on then go away. Then a few weeks later, while driving, my odyssey put itself into N and I coasted to a stop. It would not allow me to put the car into P or anything. I had to put the emergency brake on in order to not roll forward. The van at that point would not shift into any gear. It was towed to dealership and I was given the following 2K dollar repair needs. PROBLEM. ADVISE. [Other]: TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) AND TRANSMISSION SUB-HARNESS Needs replaced.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the driver's side sliding door failed to close or latch as designed. The contact stated the vehicle was driven for an hour and a half with the driver's side sliding door open. The contact stated that it was unsafe because the contact's small children were seated in the rear of the vehicle during the failure. The contact changed the fuses; however, the fuses were operable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V795000 (Latches/ Locks/Linkages); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
Short Summary (for “Briefly Describe the Problem”) Sudden catastrophic engine failure — engine threw a rod at ~85,000 miles despite proper maintenance and fluid levels. Detailed Description (for “Provide Details of the Incident”) While driving, the vehicle began making a loud noise similar to a helicopter taking off. I immediately took it to a certified mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine had “thrown a rod,” requiring a full engine replacement. The vehicle has approximately 90,000 miles, has been regularly serviced per manufacturer recommendations, and all fluids were at proper levels at the time of failure. There were no warning lights or prior signs of mechanical issues. My mechanic and I contacted Honda to determine if NHTSA Recall 23V-751 applied to my vehicle; Honda confirmed it did not. Despite this, the symptoms appear consistent with known defects covered by that recall. Honda has declined to provide assistance or repair. The sudden and complete engine failure under normal driving conditions, despite proper maintenance, suggests a potential manufacturing or design defect that poses a serious safety risk.
Today I was driving thru a green light and my car started breaking and jerking in the MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. I was not following closely behind another car. Sometimes if i am going around a curve and a car is approaching me on the curve my car will suddenly BREAK and jerk. My kids are very scared to ride with me due to the inconsistences with my acceleration and jerking out of nowhere.
Today I was driving on my road and there are small hills. I was going around a curve i take every single morning and my car kicks really hard as if it is having trouble changing gears. sometimes it makes loud noise. This has been happening for years now and Honda is not addressing it. There is an issue with the 9 speed transmission in these vehicles that have been dealing with recalls. This makes driving scary and my kids are now scared to drive to school in my vehicle. It needs to be addressed as my family is now noticing how much honda has put us in danger knowing these recalls were not really taken seriously.
t approximately 105 000 miles, while driving my 2018 Honda Odyssey, multiple advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) malfunctioned simultaneously. The following warning lights and messages appeared on the dashboard: LKAS (Lane Keeping Assist System) ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) Auto High-Beam Headlights Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation This occurred without any prior symptoms, and the systems have remained nonfunctional since the initial incident. I did not observe any physical damage, sensor obstruction, or weather-related cause at the time. The car was in regular use and had not recently undergone service or modification. Safety Concern: These systems are critical to safe vehicle operation — especially at highway speeds — and are part of the vehicle’s integrated safety design. Their sudden failure without clear cause presents a serious safety concern for the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Troubleshooting / Diagnosis So Far: Battery is original and may be aging, but the issue persisted after a jumpstart. No recent accidents or damage. Online research shows that many other 2018–2020 Odyssey owners have reported similar simultaneous system failures, which may indicate a pattern or a design flaw. Request for Action: I respectfully request the following: That Honda investigate this incident and advise if it is part of a known issue or Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). If applicable, provide warranty or goodwill coverage for diagnosis and repair. Consider this complaint as part of broader data regarding a potential system-wide electrical/software defect.
The windshield monocular camera failed, disabling all safety precautions.
Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning systems stopped working simultaneously without warning. Upon further investigation, failure of the forward-facing camera is the likely root cause. Based on conversations in internet discussion forums [XXX] , [XXX] ), this is a common failure. There was a recall for the Odyssey to fix a wiring harness issue that could affect the back-up camera. I believe loss of the Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and Lane Departure Warning systems is much more serious, with potentially catastrophic consequences. Since evidence suggests failure of the forward-facing camera happens frequently, I believe this issue should be treated with the same gravity as the back-up camera and a recall should be issued. At highway speed on cruise control the engine went out. Van only has 118,000 miles on it.
Tuesday, September 30 at 8:07 PM I was merging onto the interstate after work and my car would not accelerate properly to allow me to merge with the traffic. This happens way more than it should. Since I got this vehicle it has been doing this and scaring my entire family every time. It happens in car line. It happens when i am already driving with traffic on the interstate and when i try to pass a slow car my car will sometimes not accelerate due to the problematic recall issue that these 2018 9 speed hondas are known for. It puts me in a very scary situation and I dont know what else to do about it.
Mass safety system failure due to front projector camera/ wiring harness. noted systems below failed: Adaptive cruise control Auto emergency braking Forward collision warning Lane departure warning Lane keeping assistance Auto High beams All above system are not operational
We purchased our 2018 Honda Odyssey in January of 2024. Since we purchased the car, it regularly hesitates from the stopped position. This regularly yet intermittently causes a safety hazard when turning right into traffic or making a left turn because the acceleration does not work and feels as if it is failing for 2-4 seconds. There is a recall with other models that are the same year and close to with similar issues however ours is not included. I have now reported it to the dealership multiple times and am told they cannot replicate it so they can't help me. I was also told that there is a lag with this engine which causes teh delay but they have no concern. This causes performance issues, and puts me in a precaious situation oten when making a left turn or trying to cross multiple lanes of traffic. This issue really needs to be fixed and covered.
The camera started malfunctioning and now I have a bunch of warning lights on the dash. I think is crazy that a lot of people have the same issue and still there is no recalls for it. Is a MAJOR safety issue.
High pressure fuel pump Car had loss of power while on freeway Car seemed sluggish prior to going out. The low pressure fuel pump was replaced as part of recall 1/2025
Like many other people on the [XXX] forums, our Honda Odyssey has a water leak that dripped onto the Tailgate Control Module, causing it to corrode and stop working. Now, our tailgate door will not open or close electrically, nor even manually using the handle outside. We have to crawl through the vehicle into the trunk, open a trim piece with a screwdriver, and stick our finger into the mechanical parts to disengage the latch to allow the door to open. Safety issues: 1) It's hard to know whether the door is fully closed and latched, so it could pop open while driving. 2) In the event of a car crash or other emergency, we may need to rely on that tailgate door being operational, so it being jammed by a widespread and known problem seems like a predictable life threatening issue. The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while parked on the shoulder of a busy interstate, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was later towed to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the rod bearings had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000.
I was involved in an accident with with my family. Pregnant wife and daughter. I got into a front end collision and I was at fault. The forward collision warning didn’t activate, Neither did the automatic emergency braking. This system has never failed on me and car has always stopped every time..
I have 6 error lights on my dash board. Road departure mitigation system problem, auto high-beam problem, collision mitigation system problem, lane keeping assist problem, Ada pat I’ve cruise control problem. My car was rear ended from an insured from Utica National insurance group. After my car was rear ended these error message came up. They fixed the car but refused to fix to have the lights removed because they said that these error lights do not come on after a rear end accident.
The Auto Engine Idle Stop causes the car to die while at stop lights, stop signs, in the middle of intersections. Etc. when disengaging the AIS the engine stutters and then displays “Shift to Park” then it says to push the brake to start the car but it doesn’t always start up. Sometimes it requires opening the door. Sometimes the collision mitigation system turns off after as well. And the entertainment display turns off or says “No Audio”
My Van has only 110,000 miles on it. Yesterday I was driving my family home from a sports event my wife myself and my four kids. I got a flashing check engine light and was able to pull over, but it was an unsafe area on the side of the interstate. After sitting there for a while. we were able to get the vehicle to Honda. Honda is telling me that it is bad rod bearings. But that my vehicle falls outside of the recall that is already issued for bad rod bearings in a van that is the same year as mine. This rod bearing issue put myself and my kids in an unsafe position.
On [XXX], while driving in traffic, my 2018 Honda Odyssey suddenly and without warning shifted itself into Park. The vehicle slammed to a stop in the middle of an intersection, stranding my family and creating a serious risk of collision and injury. The vehicle would not move afterward and had to be towed from the scene. After the failure, the dashboard displayed multiple warnings: “Transmission Problem,” “Stop Driving When Safe,” “Emission System Problem,” and *“Blind Spot Information System Problem.” The gear shift indicator also blinked. The Odyssey has remained undrivable since the incident. The vehicle is at Stockton 12 Honda in Sandy, Utah, where the dealer confirmed a hard transmission failure (RO #[XXX]). Honda Corporate opened two cases (#[XXX] and #[XXX]). Despite my repeated calls and emails, Honda’s assigned case manager verbally denied coverage on Sept 12, 2025, stating the denial would only be reflected in Honda’s internal case notes. This failure is identical to the defect described in NHTSA Recall 19V-299, in which the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) can reboot due to low voltage and cause the transmission to shift into Park while driving. Although my VIN is not currently flagged, my Odyssey EX-L uses the same ZF 9-speed transmission and TCU as affected trims. I have a tow record, witnesses, and video evidence documenting the event. The vehicle remains disabled, leaving my family without safe transportation. This is a serious safety defect that should require investigation and expansion of the existing recall.
