NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Honda Odyssey. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
All of my ADAS systems were disabled due to a water leak. The repair required the dealership to hire a "leak doctor" and then replace a module in the rear tailgate. My vehicle showed an alert on the dash that each of the ADAS features were disabled, auto high beams were disabled, and I could not turn the vehicle off by pushing the start/stop button once, I had to use a procedure that forced the vehicle to shut down. My interior dash lights flickered, I'm not sure if the headlights worked. As the interior dried out, the flickering occurred less frequently. I was able to drive the vehicle to a Honda dealer for repairs.
The front camera that regulates the adaptive cruise control failed. Now it does not allow for any of the safety features to work. I’ve gone on multiple Honda forums and a lot of people have the same issue.
When pressing the accelerator, there is an extremely loud and abnormal noise coming from the fuel pump. The noise is so severe that it raises safety concerns while driving. The issue appears similar to fuel-pump–related problems reported in other recalled Honda vehicles.
Several warnings lights appeared on the dash at the same time regarding the accident safety features including: Adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane keep assistance. None are currently working. The warning randomly appeared. It's associated with the camera behind the windshield and the radar detection behind the front emblem. Problem confirmed by dealer. Components have not been evaluated by anyone.
The camera controlling many systems regarding safety failed and caused numerous warning lights to come on. Complete camera replacement was necessary.
I was driving with family to a family trip up to the mountains to enjoy the snow when at a rest area I noticed the odyssey just had a slight delay to turning on before continuing the trip. No lights no signs of anything going wrong. As we continued our trip back onto the freeway on a curvy road and night time the odyssey didn’t want to shift gears wouldn’t speed up for freeway traffic. Immediately started pulling over. The odyssey would make like jerking movements decided to call the tow truck and it quickly escalated to draining the battery. After being at the tow facility for one night it completely didn’t want to even turn on next day. Put a new battery and still drains the battery. I took it to Honda service to run a diagnostic and they come back saying the engine is seized. No lights no signs didn’t see this coming with only 87,000 miles. With a black screen displaying electrical issue at times.
At 67,000 miles the transmission was lurching when shifting in 4th gear. Took it to Honda dealership who found code p0736 stored in TCM. Transmission fluid flushed January 2024 by same dealer. No warning lights ever appeared. Body shop said this requires a new transmission at $10k+
In the past six months the Honda "auto-start" feature has caused my vehicle not to restart while stopped at an intersection. Honda needs to immediately recall all Gen 5 vehicles that use the auto-start feature and permanently disable (or give an option to disable) this useless, safety-affecting "feature". Thank you.
Front camera goes bad and all the driving safety indicator lights go on. I have been reading so many problems with this. Owners complaining. They want over $2000 to replace My car is over the warranty time limit.
Honda Odyssey Idle Stop system failure Vehicle: 2020 Honda Odyssey (Elite) Incident description: While driving, the vehicle's "Idle Stop" system engaged as I came to a complete stop at [e.g., a traffic light, intersection, stop sign]. The engine shut off as designed, but failed to restart automatically when I released the brake pedal. This left my vehicle stalled and disabled in the middle of [e.g., an intersection, a lane of traffic] with no forward power. I was scared as there were lots of cars behind me in the intersection. This has happened over a dozen times. Safety risk: This failure created an immediate and dangerous safety hazard. My vehicle was a risk for being rear-ended by traffic from behind, and my family was stranded in a vulnerable position. The vehicle was unable to move out of harm's way, and I had to put the vehicle in park and manually restart the engine. This is unacceptable for a system designed to work seamlessly and automatically. Additional information: This is not an isolated incident. The auto start-stop failure has occurred multiple times since March 2025. The system failure has put me and my passengers in a position of significant risk multiple times. Failed component: The vehicle's "Auto Idle Stop" (AIS) system, which failed to restart the engine after it was automatically shut off. Resolution: An immediate and permanent recall is necessary to address this dangerous defect. Existing service bulletins have not corrected the problem. I urge the NHTSA to require Honda to provide an effective, long-term solution to ensure the safety of Odyssey owners.
All of the warning lights shows up on the dash board. Honda told me it’s related to a bad Multi purpose camera. None of the safety features or cruise control will work until the camera is fixed.
Camera is faulty. Many owners report a similar problem.
On Sunday 9/28/2025 I started up my vehicle and received numerous error messages: Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM) Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Brake system light I contacted the dealership in which I purchased the vehicle and they did diagnostics. It came back that the front facing camera needs to be replaced. Which is a $2000 repair. After researching online this seems to be a common issue with years 2018-2020 odysseys. This needs to be investigated and a recall issued from Honda USA for remedy as these error messages are concerning when they pop up repeatedly.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the connecting rod bearings, resulting in damages to the engine, causing the engine to seize. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
The forward facing camera failed on my 2020 Odyssey with only 90,000 miles. Because of this failure, I am loosing all my forward facing safety features. This seems to be a common issue across many Honda vehicles and most users report being told the issue is being caused by overheating. Since users are being told this is a cause and effect issue, the manufacturer should address this at their expense. I first noticed this issue in mid September 2025.
The power liftgate opens, but then closes unexpectedly. It will open fully, dip down a couple inches, open back up fully and then close quickly. It does not stop closing when it meets moderate resistance, only stops when the button is pressed. I was unloading groceries into the back and it came down on me. Luckily, I was able to reach and press the button. Had it been my children I'm afraid it would have crushed them. This has now happened numerous times and through research I have found a Honda service bulletin about this known issue. I feel it should be a recall since it poses a safety hazard. As I said, it could really harm someone not able to move quickly or a child could lose a limb or be crushed. I shouldn't have to pay for a very expensive repair to maintain safety when Honda knows this is an issue caused by a defect in the spring assembly. Service bulletin 22-018. This happens nearly every time I open the liftgate now, less often when it's cold outside than when it is warm. Makes it hard/nearly impossible to use my trunk space.
My can intermittently fails to start after the auto idle start system has engaged. I am stopped at a light on a busy road. When the light turns the car tries to start but fails. Some times it is able to start but I get warnings that multiple systems had an issue or at disabled. Other times it fails to start completely and I have to cycle the power off and open my driver door before I can start the car. This has been happening for more than a year and the battery has already been replaced.
On 9/11/25 and 9/12/25. Vehicle would not start. Engine would not turnover and no power to display or lights. After 15 minutes, each occurrence car would start with my diehard jump starter. Battery replaced 3 weeks prior and also checked on 9/11/25 . Battery should 600 cold crank amps and alternator was good. Then on 9/13/25, I was at a red light and proceeded when light turn green and shut off. Was same results afterwards wait 15 minutes and jump started.
For the last few days I turn on my car and get alert lights that I have problems with: the ACC, LKAS, collision mitigation, road departure mitigation systems and auto high beams. From online Honda forums I can see that many people have had these problems and it’s likely due to needing to have the windshield camera replaced. This is a 2020 model but I bought it new in 2021, so it is less than 5 years old and I’ve got 94k miles on it. Honda markets itself on its safety features, but nearly all of my safety features are not operating properly less than 5 years from the date of purchase, it’s a widespread issue, and Honda still has not issued a recall.
Vehicle has all time on the brake system, front collision, auto high beam, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist abd road departure warnings. Sometimes the vehicle turns off suddenly when stop, and the steering wheel gets hard when parking.
I’m have had trouble with the infotainment center since less than 5,000 miles. Supposedly it was fixed during a recall. I still have issues with it. Shortly after the recall was done, I started having all kinds of dash lights come on. Transmission system problems, adaptive cruise control problems, lane assist problem, emergency breaking problems, forward collision problems, and so on. All together, they are about 7 different lights. The rear air/heat no longer work at all. Every so often, I crank it and the radio is black. Won’t work unless I restart the car. Auto headlights no longer work. Side mirrors no longer adjust. Sunroof will no longer open. Interior lights don’t work. Automatic doors and trunk lift do not work. I can’t even lock the van anymore. When I crank it, I have to hold the key fob on the ignition button and press 3 or more times before it cranks. Switch batteries in the key fob and still no different. I paid a lot of money for this van after never having one issue out of my 2014 Odyssey. The 2020 has been nothing but a nightmare since a month after I purchased it. I will never buy or recommend a Honda vehicle to anyone. In fact, I will discourage anyone who tells me they’re thinking about a Honda purchase. I am now stuck with a barely working vehicle because who can afford another car in this economy?
The multipurpose camera in mounted underneath the rearview mirror stopped working. No apparent reason for the malfunction to shut the vehicle off while filling gas and then five different warning lights occurred, including issues with lane keep assist, adaptive, cruise control, automatic, breaking, and several other safety features no explanation for the failure when that vehicle was taken to the dealer and currently being charged $2500 for a replacement of the camera and labor associated with the repair. My belief is that the system is malfunctioning due to overheating, which is a design issue associated with the vehicle and isn’t something that I should be responsible for.
Internal failure of the multipurpose camera/millimeter wave radar unit with code U300-49; available for inspection upon request. All safety features linked to multipurpose camera such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, auto high beam, collision mitigation system, and road departure mitigation system are no longer functional. This problem has been confirmed at the local Honda dealership in addition to the numerous forum posts made by like Honda Odyssey owners with this same reoccurring issue. There were no warning symptoms or messages prior to failure.
When driving from West Hartford to Westerly on June 3, serious banging started coming from the left rear undercarriage. I stopped by a local Midas shop which identified the problem as a totally broken rear spring which created a dangerous driving situation. At the time, the van had 57K miles on it. The shop strongly advised that we should consider the van as inoperable, and we subsequently had them make repairs. I contacted the dealer, Westbrook Honda in Westbrook CT,. The service manager relayed that he had never heard of a broken spring on a vehicle with these few miles, but the certified warranty coverage expired in August 2024. He recommended I contact Honda Customer Service as this failure appeared to warrant consideration due to its rarity and severity. Honda Customer Service responded by agreeing to cover damage for only half the incurred cost because we didn't bring it to a Honda dealership, despite doing that would have constituted a severe driving safety exposure. Their acknowledgement indicates that this may be evidence of faulty manufacturing of the spring which would appear to warrant NHTSA review and assessment. Rear view screen turns off due to radio not working due to FAKRA connectors.
The Multipurpose Camera Unit has failed resulting in loss of Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, Automatic braking and other features related to the MCU. The dealer inspected the car and confirmed the issue was a bad camera. There are approximately 6 warnings when starting the car of features not working, and 3 lights that remain lit on the dash including "Brake System".
The contact's daughter owns a 2020 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact attempted to inspect the vehicle but could not determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where the contact was informed by the technician that the failure might be from the wiring connected to the rearview camera. The contact declined to pay for a diagnostic test. The contact attempted to repair and realign the rearview camera; however, the part needed to realign the camera could not be purchased and could only be serviced at a Honda dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
When turning on vehicle the attached picture’s warning lights show on dashboard. Unable to reset them. Vehicles collision sensor not engaged when driving. Road departure will not activate when vehicle drifts of interstate lanes. Cruise control will not work at all. Brake system light will not reset even when brakes and fluids are good. With all these issues, vehicle safety devices don’t provide any safety. These could result in bodily injury and even death.
The camera sensor is malfunctioning. It is affecting the collision sensor and lane assist sensor. Also adaptive cruise control, road mitigation and auto high beams. My vehicle is scheduled for diagnostics with a dealer, but seeing the many, many cases and videos online of the same problem, i am certain of the problem since it has been confirmed by others who have already paid for this costly repair. My warning lamps come on every time I start my vehicle. This is a definite safety issue since the issue is with the safety sensors.
the front monocular camera is defective causing the safety features (adaptive cruise control, collision warning, lane shift warning, auto brights, auto braking) to not function at all. This seems to be a known issue with many honda owners. The warnings show every time I start the van. This issue has been verified and the repair is costly.
I was driving and the message Power Tailgate Problem popped up on dashboard of Honda Odyssey 2020. When I got to my destination I tried to open the trunk and it would not open. I took the car to Honda and they said there's water somewhere that caused problem to the tailgate. I spent over $1,000 to fix it and two weeks after getting the car back, that same message popped up and the trunk would not open again. I did research on this and found out that this is a known issue/defect for all 2018-2021 models. Honda did not take any responsibility and blamed me for not taking the car to a body shop to fix whatever issue that's causing water to infiltrate. I found that there has been class action lawsuits involving Honda tailgate issue for a defective seal on 2018-2021 Honda Odyssey models that allow water to infiltrate, yet Honda will not recall and fix it.
My car went completely dead while stopped in traffic on a busy street. My kids were in the car and thankfully I was able to crank it by pressing the start button. This issue has already been “fixed” and the dealership “cannot replicate”
For the past couple of weeks, every time I drive the car, I get a number of error messages regarding problems with the advanced driver assistance features. These include: "Adaptive Cruise Control Problem", "Collision Mitigation System Problem", Lane Keeping Assist Problem", "Road Departure Mitigation System Problem", and "Auto High-Beam Problem". A diagnostic check showed error U3000-49, namely "Control Module Internal Electronic Failure". I took it to a shop, they ran diagnostics and told me I needed to replace the multifunction camera in the windshield. It seems to be a common problem and is very expensive to fix, at more than $2000.
All warning lights came on for Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assistance.Based on my research, it seems the forward facing camera has failed. The vehicle only has 37,000 miles on it and it is only 5 years old.
Several months ago my wife was driving when the automatic brake system engaged when a car was turning in front of her. This engagement startled her and she felt the emergency braking was unnecessary considering the speed and distance the car was in front of her. This incident concerned her and made her lose confidence in the safety of the car. Then just recently we began encountering a almost consistent but sometimes intermittent brake System Error along with multiple trouble notices about problems with Road Departure Mitigation System, Lane Keep Assist System, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, etc.. when using the car. We received an error code U3000-49 reporting an Internal electronic failure in the multipurpose camera unit. Online searches of this issue seem to be very common and concerning on how many are occurring considering this is a safety system. Our van has approximately 54,000 miles on it.
Engine recently began making noise and the car was taken into Honda. The dealer checked engine components to find the cause and recommended that we remove oil pan to inspect the issue because they assumed it might be engine bearing related. Before we could schedule the service I was driving with my family on the highway when we heard a loud noise and complete loss of power. I was able to move over avoiding other cars to reach the shoulder and come to a stop. The car would not start or go into any gear. Car was towed to shop. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The car has not been inspected yet. Currently at shop being evaluated. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Engine was making noise at the dealership when it went for service. There was no concern made by dealer stating car was unsafe to drive. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Was inspected before the car broke down, but currently being evaluated by local shop. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There was an unknown noise coming from the engine, and dealer stated they needed to remove oil pan to diagnose the noise but stated it could be bearing related. The dealership did not say the car was unsafe or should not be driven. Before we could look into the issue more the car broke down on the highway.
The forward-facing camera and/or radar unit failed one morning while running errands, resulting in 5 separate ADAS system failures. With these safety features not working, our safety and the safety of others is at risk. We took it to our dealer and were told we would have to pay a diagnostic fee of $205, even though they clearly already knew what the problem was- based on the multiple complaints through NHTSA and various other forums and websites from Odyssey and other Honda model owners and across multiple years. The problem was confirmed by the dealer and they quoted us $2025 and we're still not sure if that includes just the camera and/or the radar unit, which is another $600 part. Other dealers have quoted only $1200 to fix the exact same thing, with others charging more than double that. The 5 separate warning messages scroll across our screen repeatedly and are very distracting as you're driving. With multiple electrical issues already in recall status by Honda, this is another one that they should be taking responsibility for and not dumping this defective electrical repair on their customers. Who's to say that we won't be in this exact same predicament 3 or 5 years from now if the part or parts aren't fixed! Definitely expect more from Honda... very disappointed and feel betrayed by the inferior parts they're passing on as quality products.
The contact owns a 2020 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that on two occasions while driving with the idle stop feature engaged, while the vehicle was idling and stopped, the engine failed to restart as intended when the brake pedal was released. The vehicle was restarted and operated normally. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer however, the failure was not able to be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
While driving, all at once several messages displayed, all of which are related to forward facing camera. Adaptive Cruise Control Problem, Collision Mitigation System Problem, Road Departure Mitigation System Problem, Auto High Beam disabled along with the BRAKE SYSTEM light turning on When I researched the internet, there are alot a people report this problem with the HONDA forward facing camera witch supports the systems listed this failures. Talking to friends and neighbors they have had the same issues, it is about a $2000 fix to replace and recalibrate the camera link to user forum [XXX] Most of the reported issues including mine are related to heat, the camera is in an enclosure located at the top center of the windshield. We just had heat indexes above 100 degrees. The camera is always hot to the touch. I also had this issue in the past put happened whole under warranty. All Honda Sensing technology is not working and brake system indicator is on. ACC, LKAS, Collision mitigation, auto high beam, road departure. I read online that a lot of Honda Odyssey owners are experiencing same problem. It could be the front camera sensor.I have always had electrical problems with car. There crackling sounds when the radio or music is playing on the stereos.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a faulty Multi-Model Seat Weight Sensor (SWS) in my 2020 Honda Odyssey. I understand that NHTSA Recall 24V-064 covers this issue for certain vehicles; however, my VIN is not included, even though my vehicle is exhibiting the same malfunction described in the recall notice. Multiple independent mechanics and certified airbag technicians have inspected my vehicle and confirmed that the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) circuit is open, indicating that the front passenger airbag will not deploy in the event of a collision. This represents a serious safety hazard consistent with the defect outlined in the official recall documentation (NHTSA Recall 24V-064 Report: [XXX] ) The warning light for this malfunction was present when I purchased the vehicle in August 2025. Upon start up my 2020 Honda Odyssey EX-L throws a slew of pop-up’s on the dash (collision mitigation problem, auto high beam problem, adaptive cruise control problem, lane keep assist problem, road departure mitigation problem). It's been doing this for months, but when it started, I had just gotten an oil change 2 weeks prior and knew my mechanic would've caught this if it was something major. Last week I took it back in for another oil change and asked them to check these errors. They checked the battery and it’s fine (under 2 years old), but they confirmed it's the adaptive cruise control camera. They said not many places work on those cameras and I'll have to have the dealer do the repair. Well upon searching, it seems pretty consistent that this repair is costing owners $1700 because the camera has to be recalibrated with the software after it's replaced. I'm also seeing this problem appears to be widespread for Honda owners. Honda needs to do something to make this right for their customers. A $1700 repair for a camera that randomly dies by no fault of the owner is insane, and considering how many driver assistance systems to improve safety are affected, Honda should be held accountable. The multipurpose camera in the vehicle failed, causing multiple warning lights to come on related to the collision warning, blind spot warning, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and others. The dealership said it needed to be replaced, as it was no longer working and none of these features would work without replacement
The front camera is malfunctioning, affecting all of my safety sensors.
My Honda's multipurpose camera system has failed without warning or apparent cause. Upon starting my vehicle, I now receive multiple alert lights indicating simultaneous failures in critical safety systems including: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) Collision Mitigation System Road Departure Mitigation System Auto High Beam functionality Occasionally, all the system failure alerts go away. According to my local Honda dealership, this represents an "internal failure" of the multipurpose camera unit (code U300-49). The dealership wants >$2,000 to fix the issue that appears to be a widespread known problem. There was no warning before the complete system shutdown, and all safety features connected to this camera are now non-functional.
I have been getting front end clunking noise since I bought vehicle. Honda is not able to identify and resolve issue after taking to multiple dealers. And after 5 years and 45k miles white paint started flaking in different penal of car
The front multipurpose camera has failed “due to internal failure” according to the service tech at local Honda dealer. The camera functions - lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, and auto High beam lights, have not functioned for the past month. The windshield was replaced more than a year ago and no other incidents caused the failure, so it seems the camera itself is the issue. My van only has 63,868 miles on it.
The multipurpose camera that sits behind the windshield has completely failed, deactivating many automated safety features. The dealer quoted $2700.00 to replace.
Honda has been serviced at Honda of Ames #190 since 2022. 2023 - Issues with the engine stalling when it goes into idle mode at a stop. September 2023 – contacted Honda of Ames, IA dealer. They indicated it’s the battery which will need replaced. Took the car to Interstate Battery on 9/26/2023 where it tested at 12.5 volts out of possible 12.6 volts. Then took the car to dealer who insisted it was an issue with the battery. Replaced battery for $391. Problem continued. In 2024 there was a recall re: a known issue with the engine idle functionality requiring a software update. Took the vehicle in for the software update. Complained to the dealer that I unnecessarily spent $390 on new battery when that wasn’t the issue. They refused to refund any money. Problem persisted. On 5/21/2025 the car was brought into dealership for 100k service. I complained again that the auto-idle feature still stalling. Was told that it's not a universal known problem, they don’t have a fix that he’s aware of other than to check the battery. I explained we’ve been through this before and brought up Sept 2023 battery situation. He stated that the quick/handheld battery testers are not reliable; repair shops have “the big testers in the back” that are more reliable – that is what they will test my battery on. I asked if they could turn off the feature permanently and was told no. When car was ready I was told that the battery life tested fine. They did a software upgrade and I will need to drive it and just see if the stall issue continues. He repeated that it’s not a “universal known problem” and there was nothing further he could do. 7/5/2025 – the auto-idle has stalled twice since the service on 5/21/2025. Stalling in an intersection, at a red light, bottom of an off-ramp, etc.i s a serious and highly concerning safety issue.
The ADAS front windshield camera failed on our 2020 Honda Odyssey. This vehicle is too new to have a failure like this and this is a very common issue that I have seen across all Honda Odysseys of same generation. Honda needs to be held accountable.
