THE LOWER CONTROL ARM TO THE SUB-FRAME ASSEMBLY COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE WHEEL WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THANKFULLY, THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY TRAVELING AT APPRX. 15 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE CAR CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP AND HAD TO BE TOWED FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. MY HUSBAND WAS SECONDS FROM TURNING ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND HAD DECIDED TO BRING THE CAR HOME TO CHECK FOR A PROBLEM, AS THE CAR SEEMED TO BE SWAYING. IF THIS FAILURE HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH, HE MAY HAVE BEEN KILLED. THE DETACHED WHEEL TURNED OUTWARD AND WEDGED INTO THE WHEEL WELL, THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL HOUSING AND QUARTER PANEL FROM THE DETACHED WHEEL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V533000 (AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE). THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED, BUT THE AIR BAG INDICATOR IS STILL ON. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT SHE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SECOND REPAIR BECAUSE THEY COMPLETED THE REPAIR UNDER THE RECALL. SHE THEN HAD THE DEALER CALL THE HYUNDAI MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SECOND REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,324. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A CURB. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE WAS ROTTED. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARM WAS RUSTED. NO REPAIRS HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN MADE TO THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD COVER THE REPAIR COSTS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.
ON 2 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS THERE HAS BEEN CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF FRONT SUSPENSION (LOWER CONTROL ARM) FOR MY 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA, AND LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE. ONE INCIDENT IN WHICH THE DRIVERS SIDE CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT CAUSING IT TO SNAP, HAPPENING ABOUT 7 MONTHS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT HAPPENING LAST NIGHT. THE CAR THEN SPUN IN THE ROAD CAUSING ENDANGERING TO TRAFFIC AND A NEAR HEAD ON ACCIDENT. THIS NEW INCIDENT, (SAME PROBLEM) THE CONTROL ARM SNAPPED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SPIN OUT OF THE ROAD. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, I EXPERIENCED SUDDEN LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING AND NEARLY EXPERIENCED A ROLL OVER WHILE DRIVING. FROM RESEARCH, I HAVE FOUND THERE ARE NUMEROUS PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE NHTSA HAS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION ON THE HYUNDAI SONATA FOR THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM, LOWER CONTROL ARM SUSPENSION FAILURE WITH RUST CORROSION. I AM AFRAID THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI AND IS GOING TO CAUSE SOMEONE TO GET SEVERELY INJURED OR KILLED. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED WITH A RECALL OF BOTH LOWER CONTROL ARMS. *TR
JUST CAME OFF INT. 95 APPLIED BRAKES AT RED LIGHT AND LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE OFF. SENT CAR INTO CURB AND HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED. SHOP SHOWED ME THE DAMAGE AND THE CONTROL ARM IS COMPLETELY ROTTED. STILL THERE WAITING ON PARTS. *TR UPDATED 04/22/09.*JB
AFTER RECEIVING RECALL LETTER, WENT TO ATLANTIC HYUNDAI DEALER,NY 11795 TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AND I BELIEVE THEY DID NOTHING, BECAUSE MY AIR BAG LIGHTS STILL REMAINS ON. THEY SUPPOSE TO INSTALL THE VINYL PROTECTIVE COVER ON THE AIR BAG ELECTRICAL MODULE,AFTER MORE THAN 1-1/2 HOUR WHEN I GOT BACK MY CAR,THE AIR BAG LIGHT STILL REMAINS ON. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE IN THE CENTER CONSOLE FAILED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS LIQUID INTRUSION DUE TO A MANUFACTURER DEFECT OF THE CENTER CONSOLE CUP HOLDERS. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE ACCORDING TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V532000 (AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE). THE DEALER WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THEY SHOULD REPAIR THE FAILURE AND; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,826. UPDATED 01/14/09. *LJ UPDATED 01/21/09.*JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, WHICH INDICATED THAT THE AIR BAGS WERE INOPERATIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND A TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR FAILED. THE REMEDY IN RECALL # 08V532000 (AIR BAGS;FRONTAL;SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE) DOES MANDATE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE. AS A CONSEQUENCE, COLLATERAL DAMAGED CAUSED BY A FAILURE THAT HAS PROGRESSED WILL NOT BE REMEDIED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,800. WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT, THE CAR LOST STEERING CONTROL AND WENT INTO ON COMING TRAFFIC. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR OFF OF THE ROAD AND LUCKILY AVOIDED A HEAD ON COLLISION. I HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC, AND HE SAID THE PASSENGER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM HAD RUSTED AWAY. HE SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PART TO HAVE A FAILURE ON, YOU LOSE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE CAR. *TR
DURING ROUTINE OIL CHANGE MY MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM IS RUSTED SO SEVERELY THAT FAILURE IS IMMANENT. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO MY DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THIS IS NORMAL FOR A 7 YEAR OLD CAR WITH 66K MILES ON IT AND THEY WOULD REPAIR AT THE NORMAL CHARGE. FROM MY RESEARCH THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE HANDLED BY THE DEALERSHIP AT NO COST AND IS NOT "NORMAL". LUCKILY IT WAS CAUGHT BEFORE THE PART FAILED ON MY COMMUTE DOWN INTERSTATE 495 TWICE A DAY. I WILL BE FOLLOWING UP WITH HYUNDAI CORPORATE TO GET THIS ISSUE FIXED - THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER REGARDING A RECALL ON HER VEHICLE AND WAS INFORMED THAT HER AIR BAGS MAY NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. SHE WAS FURTHER INFORMED THAT A HARNESS AND CLIPS WOULD BE ATTACHED TO THE AIR BAG SYSTEM TO ASSIST THE AIR BAGS WITH DEPLOYING; HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS MAY BE DAMAGED BECAUSE THE INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE MECHANIC WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY THE REPAIR SHOP. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD TO DRIVE IN A VEHICLE WITH NO AIR BAGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 76,000.
LEFT FRONT, LOWER CONTROL ARM FAILURE, WHILE OPERATING VEHICLE AT LESS THAN FIVE MILES AN HOUR, WHILE MAKING LEFT TURN ACROSS ROADWAY, TO ENTER DRIVEWAY. AT EDGE OF ROADWAY, JUST BEFORE REACHING DRIVEWAY, EXPERIENCE FALL OF FRONT PORTION OF VEHICLE TO ROAD AND LOSS OF CONTROL. INSPECTION REVEALS LEFT LOWER CONTROL ARM SEPARATED INTO TWO PIECES. ONE PIECE REMAINS ATTACHED TO BALL JOINT, ONE PIECE REMAINS ATTACHED TO CAR. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALS LOWER CONTROL ARM RUSTED THROUGH, FROM INSIDE OUT. ONLY A MINUTE BEFORE, VEHICLE WAS OPERATED ON LIMITED ACCESS HIGHWAY, AT HIGHWAY SPEED. NOTE: VEHICLE GARAGED, WITHIN ATTACHED GARAGE, WITH CONCRETE FLOOR. VEHICLE SERVICED REGULARLY. *TR
I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR MY 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA FOR AIR BAG WELL I CALLED ON IT BECAUSE I HAVE ALL READY REPLACED ON AIR BAG MODULE AND MY AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON AGAIN AND THEY SAY THEY ONLY PUT A COVER ON IT BUT ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE TO REPLACE MODULE HOW IS THIS SUPPOSE TO HELP IF MODULE IS NO GOOD. 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA, 72K MILES, DRIVER'S SIDE CONTROL ARM FRACTURED WHILE GOING 5 MPH. IT HAD RUSTED PAPER THIN AND GAVE NO WARNING. AXLE, FENDER AND FRONT BUMPER ARE DESTROYED TOO. LOREN HYUNDAI OF GLENVIEW, IL ACTED STUPID ABOUT IT, LIKE THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT AND NO CONCEPT OF THE POTENTIAL LIABILITY INVOLVED IN SUCH A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. I WILL TALK TO CORPORATE ON MONDAY. I AM REPORTING THIS INCIDENT OUT OF CONCERN FOR PUBLIC SAFETY. THIS MUST BE ADDRESSED BY A RECALL, IN MY OPINION. *TR

TRAVELING LESS THAN 25 MPH I APPLIED BRAKES TO AVOID A PEDESTRIAN RUNNING ACROSS TRAFFIC. AFTER STOPPING VEHICLE WAS DIFFICULT TO STEER AND MADE LOUD GRINDING NOISE. I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE TRAFFIC FLOW. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SERVICE STATION. REPAIR WAS MADE TO THE LEFT FRONT CONTROL ARM THAT RUSTED THROUGH AND SNAPPED .SERVICE MECHANIC STATED THAT IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT THE FAILURE HAD HAPPENED A SLOWER SPEED AND THAT A FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WOULD HAVE POSSIBLY RESULTED IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND POSSIBLE INJURIES. THE PART WAS RETURNED TO ME. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 TO 65 MPH, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE SPEED DECREASED TO APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH. HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS AGAINST THE WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND THE LOWER BALL JOINT STABILIZER FAILED AND WAS CORRODED. THE TOTAL REPAIR COST WAS $1,200. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 79,500.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHEN THE CONTACT STARTED THE ENGINE, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND REMAINED LIT UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND THEY STATED THAT THE AIR BAG WIRING FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V532000 (AIR BAGS; FRONTAL; SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE) AND WAS REPAIRED. HOWEVER, THE REMEDY HAS NOT CORRECTED THE ISSUE ADDRESSED IN THE SAFETY DEFECT. THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR CONTINUES TO ILLUMINATE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA RECALL ON THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE. CONSUMER WANTS TO KNOW WHY THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REPLACE THE MODULE FOR THIS RECALL. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD HER VEHICLE CLEANED AND DETAILED. WHEN SHE PICKED THE VEHICLE UP, THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THE MODULE WAS NO OPERATING. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER IT COULD HAVE BEEN FROM MOVING THE SEATS. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER REGARDING THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION AS STATED IN THE LETTER, ONLY TO BE TOLD THEY WERE ONLY REQUIRED TO PUT A PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE AIR BAG MODULE SO THAT LIQUID COULD NOT GET INTO THE MODULE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DAMAGED HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD NUMEROUS FAILURES AND WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW FROM A HYUNDAI DEALER. INITIALLY, THE VEHICLE WAS PULLING HARD AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG; HOWEVER, THEY REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS AT THAT TIME. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR A SECOND TIME FOR THE PULLING OF THE VEHICLE, AS WELL AS A REAR END BULB THAT HAD BLOWN. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD NOT TURN OVER. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE BATTERY WAS CORRODED AND THERE WAS A GREEN SUBSTANCE LEAKING FROM THE BATTERY. THE HYUNDAI COMPANY ADVISED HER TO CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY ADVISED HER TO PURCHASE A NEW BATTERY. ONCE THE NEW BATTERY WAS INSTALLED, THE VEHICLE STILL WOULD NOT START. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 69,000.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND HAD JUST COME TO A STOP WHEN THE FRONT SUSPENSION COLLAPSED. SHE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO OUR PREFERRED REPAIR SHOP. THEY TOLD USE THAT THE SUSPENSION HAD RUSTED OUT AND THAT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE. *TR

THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED BY THE DEALER; HOWEVER, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER STATED THAT SHE COULD PAY THE FULL AMOUNT FOR THE MODULE AND COULD POSSIBLY BE REIMBURSED; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE. SHE FIRST NOTICED ISSUES WITH THE AIR BAG IN JULY OF 2008 WHEN THE INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE AIR BAG MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR WOULD COST $900. SHE WAS INFORMED OF THE RECALL IN SEPTEMBER OF 2008 AND THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT RECALL NOTICES WOULD NOT BE ISSUED UNTIL THE END OF 2008. AFTER HAVING THE RECALL REMEDY PERFORMED, THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE REMEDY WAS INSUFFICIENT TO COMPLETELY REPAIR THE ISSUE. SHE FELT THAT THE ENTIRE MODULE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BECAUSE THE COVER WAS DEFECTIVE. THE COVER WOULD BE PROTECTING THE MODULE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 137,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WILL EITHER NOT ACCELERATE OR NOT ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS DEPRESSED. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE SEALS FAILED. THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION AND SEVERAL MONTHS LATER THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED ITS WARRANTY, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,000. THE CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE! THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL LINE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATORS WERE CONSTANTLY BLINKING. SHE WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT NIGHT BECAUSE THE FOG LIGHTS BLINK AS WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SIXTEEN TIMES AND THEY STATED THAT OPEN WIRING AT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRING HARNESS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER PERFORMED A WIRING REPAIR IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRING HARNESS, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTS. A REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND ADVISED HER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE WOULD TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,456 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,000.

CHECKUP ON 11/26/07. ALSO,DECIDED TO GET CAR INSPECTED AT THE SAME TIME. THEY REPLACED THE CRANKSHFT SENSOR. WAS TOLD TO DRIVE MY CAR AT LEAST 150 MILES SO THAT THEY CAN RESET THE MONITORS WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT ON. THIS COST ME $257.00 NOW,VISIT #2- ON 1/03/08 ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY FIND 3 NEW PROBLEMS. THEY REPLACED A VALVE CANNISTER,PURGE VALVE,GAS CAP. THEY STATE THEY ALSO CLEARED THE CODES TO PASS INSPECTION. BUT, AGAIN I HAD TO DRIVE MY CAR ANOTHER 50+ MILES AGAIN SO THAT THEY COULD RESET THE MONITORS. ENGINE LIGHT WAS OFF, WHICH WAS A GOOD SIGN. THIS COST ME $508.00. HOWEVER, THE NEXT MORNING,I STARTED UP THE CAR. IT STARTED VERY ROUGH AND FELT LIKE IT WAS READY TO STALL OUT ON ME. ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON ALSO. VISIT #3- ON, 1/8/08 TOOK CAR BACK AGAIN,EXPLAINED WHAT HAPPENED. THEY SAID TO LEAVE IT OVERNIGHT. THE NEXT DAY, SERVICE MANAGER CALLS ME AT WORK. SHE TELLS ME THAT THEIR WAS A #4 CYLINDER MISFIRE CODE, NEEDED A FUEL INJECTOR,SPARK PLUGS, PLUG WIRES,TIMING BELT, SERPENTINE BELT,BELT TENSIONER,OILL CHANGE AND FUEL INJECTOR SERVICE. ESTIMATED AT LEAST $1200.00. THIS WAS VERY UPSETTING. I DECLINED ALL WORK AND FILE A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT AGAINST THEM. MY CAR WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN I TOOK IT THE FIRST TIME. THIS IS AN UNFAIR PRACTICE BY THESE PEOPLE AND THEY NEED TO GET REPORTED. PERHAPS, THEIR MECHANIC TRIGGERED SOMETHING ON THE CODES TO CREATE THESE PROBLEMS ALL OF A SUDDEN. THE DRIVER STATED THE VEHICLE WILL ALSO SHIFT IT'S SELF INTO NEUTRAL AND THE VEHICLE WILL ALSO BEGIN TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN. HE HAD TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON. THE CONTACT STATED THE POWER WINDOWS AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE NOT OPERATING PROPERLY AS WELL. THE CONTACT STATED HE HAD CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT NONE OF THESE ISSUES ARE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY AND HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.

THE CONTACT LATER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V533000 (AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE) AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 27,000.
I WAS TRAVELLING EASTBOUND IN THE #1 LANE ON ARDEN WAY. AN SUV (DODGE DURANGO) WAS TRAVELLING IN THE WESTBOUND #2 LANE OF ARDEN WAY MADE A U-TURN MANUVER OVER THE CENTER DIVIDER AND CRASHED INTO MY VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE WAS PUSHED INTO A SECOND VEHICLE AS A RESULT. POLICE REPORT REFLECTS THIS ACTION. MY AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *CN

THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRAN-SENSOR OUTPUT FAILED. THERE WAS ALSO SRMS INTERNAL FAILURE. THE REPAIRS WERE MADE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE AIR BAGS WOULD DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. IN DECEMBER OF 2008, THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V532000 (AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE). THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED; HOWEVER, THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $3,000 TO REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED WITH THE USAGE OF THE AIR BAGS AND DEPLOYMENT IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH. THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO ASSIST BECAUSE THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT ACCEPT THE VIN PROVIDED BY THE CONTACT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,159 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,704.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

THE CONTACT THEN RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE FAILED AIR BAG MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AND REPAIRED, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SRS MODULE, WIRES, AND THE AIR BAG INDICATOR THAT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED DURING THE RECALL REPAIR; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL REMEDY. THEY COULD NOT REPAIR THE ADDITIONAL FAILURES ACCORDING TO THE RECALL FOR FREE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RECALL REMEDY AND ANY ADDITIONAL FAILURE WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID FOR BY THE CONTACT. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT 30 MPH, VEHICLE WENT OUT OF CONTROL AND WAS NEARLY INVOLVED IN A CRASH. PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM WAS DETERMINED TO BE ROTTED AWAY. NO OTHER SIGNS OF VISIBLE RUST ON THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE. DEALER WAS IMPRESSED BY THE FAILURE AND TOOK PHOTOS TO EMAIL TO HYUNDAI DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE WHO DENIED ANY DEFECTIVE PARTS OR BLAME ON HYUNDAI'S PART. DEALER IS REPLACING THE CONTROL ARM AT MY EXPENSE. PART IS BEING SAVED. *TR
DRIVING AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 25MPH, I STOPPED QUICK TO AVOID A CAR COMING OUT OF SIDE STREET. AFTER STOPPING THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. WHEN CHECKED BY A MECHANIC HE SAID HE HAD NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE LEFT SIDE OF CAR HAD ROTTED AWAY AT ONE POINT, AND THE METAL WAS PAPER THIN. HE THAN TOLD ME IT WAS GOOD THAT I WAS NOT GOING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED WHEN THIS HAPPENED, OR I WOULD HAVE HAD A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY, BUT IF THIS DEFECT IS ON OTHER CARS SOMEONE MAY GET KILLED. THIS WAS ON A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. I'M NOW WAITING FOR THE PART TO REPLACE IT. *TR

2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GLS -- ONE MONTH AGO (JANUARY 2007) THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD COMMENCED SLOWLY, DIMLY APPEARING THEN SLOWLY FADING OUT IN ONE CONTINUOUS CYCLE OF SEVERAL SECONDS. THE CONDITION REPEATS AS LONG AS THE IGNITION IS SWITCHED "ON." I NOTICED HYUNDAI'S RECALL OF THE 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA FOR EXACTLY THAT PROBLEM AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. EVIDENTLY, THE CONDITION IS CAUSED BY ONE-OR-MORE FAULTY AIRBAG SENSORS. THE RESULT, ACCORDING TO THE RECALL INFORMATION, IS THAT ONE OR MORE AIRBAGS MAY NOT DEPLOY WHEN ACTIVATED. THE DEALER ENTERED MY VEHICLE'S VIN, TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL AND REFUSED TO REPLACE THE SENSORS WITHOUT CHARGE. BECAUSE OF THE EXORBITANT COST OF REPLACEMENT, PLEASE ASK HYUNDAI TO INCLUDE MY VEHICLE IN THE RECALL AND/OR MAIL ME A LETTER OF CREDIT THAT I CAN GIVE TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THIS CONDITION REPAIRED. ACCORDINGLY, I MUST CONTINUE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE IN THIS CONDITION UNTIL I HEAR FROM YOU AND/OR HYUNDAI, HERE CONCERNED. OTHERWISE, LAST JUNE, 2006, BOTH SUN VISOR RETAINING BRACKETS (HOLDING THE VISOR TO THE ROOF) CRACKED ABOUT A MONTH APART, RENDERING THE SUN VISORS USELESS, IN THAT THE PLACEMENT OF THE VISOR CANNOT BE CONTROLLED. . .IT SIMPLY DROPS AND HANGS WHEN RELEASED FROM THE RETAINER. MY DRIVER'S SIDE BRACKET BROKE JUST AT THE MOST INOPPORTUNE MOMENT, WHEN THE SUN WAS SHINING DIRECTLY INTO MY EYES AT A LEVEL JUST ABOVE THE TOP OF THE STEERING WHEEL. I FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN ON A LIGHTLY TRAVELED ROAD AT THE TIME, SUCH THAT I PULLED OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER FOR A FEW MINUTES UNTIL THE SUN ROSE A BIT HIGHER IN THE SKY. THOSE BRACKETS SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN THIS; LIKEWISE, THE AIRBAG SENSORS SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN THIS. *JB ABL.PCO

THE CONTACT CALLED THE DEALER AND STATED THAT HE NEEDED A NEW CONTROL MODULE; HOWEVER, THE RECALL NOTICE STATED THAT A PROTECTIVE COVERING WAS NEEDED ON TOP OF THE AIR BAG CONTROL MODULE. THE REMEDY DOES NOT CORRECT THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE DEFECT REMAINS. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD CHANGE THE REMEDY OF THIS RECALL. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
I WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION IN MY 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA, WITH A JEEP WRANGLER, THE FRONT END OF MY CAR WAS BADLY DAMAGED (HAVE PICTURES), THE DAMAGE WAS BAD ENOUGH TO FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANY TO TOTAL MY CAR. YET! NEITHER ONE OF MY FRONT AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN THE CRASH. EVERYONE WHO HAS SEEN MY CRASHED ELANTRA COULD NOT BELIEVE THE AIR BAGS NEVER DEPLOYED! LUCKILY, I WAS NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED, SO THAT DOES SAY SOMETHING FOR THE ELANTRA, BUT I STILL FEEL THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. I'M JUST TRYING TO PREVENT SOMEONE FROM GETTING REALLY HURT IN A CRASH, BECAUSE OF THIS POSSIBLE DEFECT. WILL BE GLAD TO PROVIDE MORE DETAILS IF NECESSARY! *NM
HEADLIGHTS BURNING OUT FREQUENTLY WAS THE FIRST SIGN OF PROBLEMS, REPLACED THEM AS THE DEALER SAID THIS WAS INHERENT TO THE 2001 ELANTRA. IN AUGUST 2006 CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ALSO, THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT WAS ON, HEADLIGHT OUT AGAIN, TOOK CAR TO DEALER, THEY CALLED BACK AND SAID THAT THE ALTERNATOR HAD BEEN OVER CHARGING AND NOT ONLY WAS THE OVER CHARGING BURNING OUT THE HEADLIGHTS IT ALSO HAD TAKEN OUT THE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE, AND AIR BAG MODULE. CAR HAD ONLY 42000 MILES ON IT, AND WAS 2 WEEKS FROM BEING OUT OF THE 5 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY. WELL HERE IT IS 6 MONTHS LATER AND 47000 MILES AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS BACK ON, I HAVE SINCE PURCHASED A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL TO READ THE CODES. THE CAR WAS RUNNING ROUGH AT IDLE. THE CODES CAME UP AS MIS FIRE ON CYLINDER 3, TPS SENSOR FAILURE AND MAP BAROMETER FAILURE. I REPLACED THE PLUGS AND WIRES, ENGINE STILL RAN ROUGH. TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER THEY REPLACED THE TPS, STILL RUNNING ROUGH, THEY SUGGESTED THAT BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY TPS THAT THE EXCESSIVE DUMPING OF FUEL INTO THE JETS COULD HAVE CAUSED ONE OF THEM TO BE CLOGGED. I HAD THEM CLEAN THE JETS AS WELL AS REPLACE THE PLUGS AND WIRES AGAIN (THEY HAD ALSO FOUND THAT #3 WIRE HAD BEEN ARCING.) THIS TOOK CARE OF THE IDLE PROBLEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR WHEN IT WAS DEPRESSED. THE BRAKES WERE PUMPED SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. A SMALL AMOUNT OF SMOKE APPEARED UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE AIR BAG AND ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT EXERTED MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AS IF THERE WERE NO POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE POWER STEERING HOSE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 98,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT SPILLED WATER ON THE AIR BAG COMPONENTS AND THE SENSOR MODULE FAILED. SHE FILED A REPORT WITH THE MANUFACTURER BECAUSE SHE FELT THAT IF THE VEHICLE WERE DESIGNED DIFFERENTLY, THE WATER WOULD NOT HAVE PENETRATED AND DAMAGED THE AIR BAG COMPONENTS. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT IT WAS THE CONTACT'S FAULT; THEREFORE, THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. ON NOVEMBER 29, 2008, THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V533000 (AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE). SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR CLIP INSTEAD OF THE SENSOR MODULE. THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION BECAUSE THE AIR BAG INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE MANUFACTURER IS RECONSIDERING THE PREVIOUS REPORT AND WILL INVESTIGATE IF THEY WILL PAY FOR THE SENSOR MODULE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
